Research and notes on Puella Magi Madoka Magica seires +reflection
Reflection:
I did some research on the series, I mainly did research on theories and analysis videos on YouTube. I re- watched the series and made notes and took screenshots as I went alone. I spent too much time doing research and not enough time starting the essay. I was focusing more on analysising the story than writing about how it relates to one of the themes such as identity and artist leagacy. This series was written by Gen Urobuchi so I wanted to explore how he interprets the magica girl genre with chartacers and setting through symbolism.
I wasn’t happy with the outcome of my essay as I did not finish it in time and went over the word count. However, I was happy that I could write about this topic. I did a lot of research but struggled to contain that research and put it into my essay without retelling the story. I chose this topic because I was interested in the topic of the magical girl genre and how Puella Magi Madoka Magica changed that. I also wish I had included images since the image I did include was not the best image for the essay. I think for a future essay I would like to write about the movie that comes after the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series.

2 paragraphs – characters and authors character design choices and story themes
Character – 5, 14 – year old girls – Madoka, Homura, Kyoko, Sayaka and Mami
Story
About five girls who are granted wishes by the mysterious creature called Kyubey. In exchange for their wishes, they must become magical girls and fight witches. The story follows the main character Madoka Kaname. She has pink hair and pink eyes. She lives at home with her family, her mum Dad and brother. She has two best friends Hitomi and Sayaka. They go to Mitakihara high school, and they are in 8th grade.
Meaning behind the story and characters?
How wishes can end in cruel ways – hope can easily be turned into despair, the same as how magical girls that are hopeful of their wishes can easily be turned into witches through their despair of the consequences of that wish.
How the character design and story related to the chosen themes given?
Madoka has a pink colour scheme. Her magical girl uniform follows the same. Her hair is tied up in high twin ponytails by red ribbon that she thought at first might be too flashy. Her best friend Sayaka said that she was cute with the ribbon as did her mum. Her eyes are big and round byt slightly slanted like doe eyes. The colour pink can resemble innocence, softness, kindness, love and compassion. Madoka is quite a caring character and is always trying to help others and tries to see the good in others. It takes a lot for a person to break her down. She doesn’t think too highly of herself but thinks she could be like others form example Mami. Madoka has the typical pink hair colour which is a common anime trope of pink haired characters. They are often innocent character or yandere, crazy characters like Yuno Gasai from the anime Future Diary
Homura has a purple colour scheme. Homura has black hair and purple eyes. Her hair is long, and she has a little fridge. In the very first timeline of her she is seen with two braids and a headband. She wore red glasses before. Originally Homura was a very shy and quiet girl. She was mostly in the hospital due to her heart condition. She isn’t very good at math, was slightly bullied for not being able to participate in sports for long due to her heart condition. She didn’t have confidence in herself. Like how Madoka was in the latest timeline. In the latest timeline her braids are undone so her hair is out. It could resemble her being free or letting go. She doesn’t wear her glasses anymore as her body does not need them since her soul is no longer with her body. The colour purple can come across as a cold colour. It could mean mysterious, royalty, evil, jealousy or bravery.
What themes?
Love, power, power of friendship, identity of the characters, photography as truth, religion, magical girl genre back then to now, queer relationships, defying God, good vs evil,
Gen Urobuchi – the screenwriter
Conclusion – What genre is Puella Madoka Magica, maybe this is the new type of magical girl anime being created now?

Movie 1 – notes
Episode 1 – end “I first met her in a dream… or something”
- Starts off with Madoka running into a distorted black and white area. She is just running. She seems lost. It looks like a factory and doors. Then it is revealed to be Homura fighting Walpursnacht. – Madoka dreaming
- Kuybey tries to tell Madoka to change Homura’s fate. Madoka and Kyubey think Homura fighting by herself is too much.
- Introducing the main character Madoka and the rest of her family then her friends and then her school. – showing her ordinary life so far.
- Mutiple chairs in her parent’s room and Madoka shines the light on the empty chairs.
- Her mum also has a similar style hair pin or clip in the shape of Madoka’s ribbions beig tied.
- Strange clock with wonky numbers and clours – its very out of place and so is the shelving cabinets on the shelf in the background – it looks like it represents the colours of Madoka (pink) Sayaka (blue) Mami (yellow) and Kyoko (red) =. Theres a green one but it doesn’t represent Homura. Homura’s main colour is purple.
- Madoka leaving school running with bread in her mouth. (a typical anime trope for the main characters)
- Meet her friends (Hitomi and Sayaka) – oh the green shelf thing could represent Hitomi maybe – it might be who her friends are.
- The setting is nice, future like houses and items in Madoka’s house, the school, school bell tower, scassrooms and desks
- New student – Homura Akemi – Madoka realises that she is the same girl from her dream – Homura quickly writes her name on the board before the teacher even finishes. Everyone is slightly shocked but, this is only because she has done it so many times before.
FIRST SCREEN SHOT – says to call her homura
SECOND SCREEN SHOT – Madoka says Homura has an unusual name – not in a bad way – but thinks she finds it cool
LAST ONE – she gets annoyed and turns around as the very first meeting sounds too similar for her. More like painful. She turns around and warns Madoka without giving any context. To basically not change and if she is given to opportunity to, she shouldn’t. She asks her if she values her friends and family before the warning.
- Good at maths now
- Good at sports
- Tells her friends about what Homura said
- “You guys have met in a past life and fate has reached you from time and space to bring you back together again”
- Colours of the mall lights resembling the main characters
- Homura chasing Kyubey – while Madoka and Sayaka are at the mall – Kyubey calls out to her for help – the area she goes to is off limits and is convenient for magical girls to fight witches in abandoned areas
- Sayaka saves Madoka from Homura
- Caught in a witch’s labyrinth
- Mami appears – saves them from the witch – amazed by her
- Kyubey luring Madoka to a witch labyrinth so they can make contracts with Sayaka and Madoka to become magical girls. Grand one wish. Fight witches.
Homura new student – vague warning to Madoka – Hitomi, Sayaka and Madoka discuss about it in the mall – goes to music shop – hears voice calling out to her (Madoka) – sees cat like creature hurt – tries to help it- sees Homura – Homura tries to stop Madoka – Sayaka saves Madoka – they run away – get caught in a witch’s labyrinth.
Mami saves Madoka and Kyubey from a witch
- Madoka’s parents’ room
Episode 2 – “That sounds truly wonderful”
Mami Tomoe is a 9th grader at Mitakihara middle school and she’s a magical girl.
Mami invites Madoka and Sayaka over to her apartment and says she lives alone.
3 chairs on her dining table to symbolize how her parents used to live there with her, before they died.
Tea and cake
Soul gem – shows you are a magical girl
Contract – is one wish
If you have a soul gem – its your duty to fight witches
Madoka says her mum’s eyes are scary however Kuybey is shown right after showing how he is scary too but comes across as an innocent creature to the girl. His eyes are deceiving
“Magical girls bring hope to the world, witches bring despair” – Kyubey
Invisible to humans – anxiety, trust, rage and hatred – they sow the seeds of disaster all over the world
“Suicides that can’t be explained without motive, a witches curse is most likely the cause of such things” – Mami
Witches hide in their labyrinths

Offers for them to go on witch hunts with her for the experience. “Ask yourselves is there something you want so badly that its worth putting your life in danger for” – Mami
Powerful magical girl – Homura – They think Homura knew that Kyubey was trying to contact her. (That’s why she was staring at Madoka – but that’s later not true but half true) They think she fights other magical girls cuz of the rewards they receive. Mami says its common for magical girls to fight each other.
Madoka draws in class – magical girl outfits
Thinking about their wishes – Sayaka and Madoka – Kuybey adds how most girls accept his offer right away
“I guess we don’t know any better do we, yep, were blissfully ignorant. Just think about for a sec. Have you ever wanted something so bad you trade your life for it? There’s tones of people out there, a lot less than we have, jump at a chance like this. You see we can’t figure out what to wish for, cuz we don’t know what its like to want something that bad. But blissfully ignorant to any kind of suffering. Why us, why did we get this chance. It’s not fair, is it? I get to have a wish but you there’s other people out there deserve it a lot more.” – Sayaka
[screenshot Kyosuke]
Homura appears – Mami watches from afar in a tower – communicates with them telaphaecally as well (all three of them)
Wanted to kill it before it made contact with Madoka Kaname
Soul gems scenes the magic residue of a witch – it picks up a trail, so you follow it.
Sayaka says Mami is an “ally of justice” – cuz Mami said that she didn’t want to go after the witch from the other day right away cuz Madoka and Sayyaka would have been left alone and didn’t want to risk it.
Sayaka doesn’t like Homura and doesn’t understand what her deal is – Madoka is wondering if she is a bad person
Witches located – “ areas with a lot of traffic, car crash, red light district where fights break out, where people go to comic suicide, hospital (worse place for a witch to hide) – drining the life force of a helpless person who is already weak from illness.”
Mami saves a woman from committing suicide. Lays her down to reveal a witch’s kiss.
Abandoned areas – like old business buildings and off limit areas – where ive seen most witches hide
Changes Sayaka baseball bat into a magical girl weapon for safety + protection
“Stay close to me once were inside, ok?” – Mami to Sayaka and Madoka - carrs for their safety – Homura is following them
Sees their first witch in person – asks if Mami is going to fight it – eher response: “It’s fine, I could never loose”
Fighting music starts playing – witch vs magical girl – song Magia by Kalafina and music by Yuki Kajiura
“It’s ok, I can’t look uncool in front of my magical girl trainees” – Mami to Sayaka and Madoka while fighting a witch
“Let’s wrap this up” – Mami using her ribbon to finish the witch off
Ribbon turns into a large gun
Finishes by drinking tea – looks to Madoka and Sayaka that she is ok and had defeated the witch
Received a grief seed – witch’s egg – restores magic and
“Maybe you’re not the sharing with others type” – Mami to Homura (after giving her the grief seed)
Madoka is finding it hard to figure out what she would wish for, its not easy, Mami tries so hard to save people, she looks so amazing doing it too. If someone like me could do that, going around helping people who are in trouble, well, I’d think that would be truly wonderful”
- witches are curses
- Magical girls are born from wishes
- Death
- Soul gem – source of magic
Mami’s head was cut off in the reflection of the table in her room in her house.
Blissfully ignorant – Sayaka – feeling guilty for wanting something others could want other than herself
Madoka’s drawing look like paper dolls – costume ideas
Suicide + hospitals where witches could feed off people
Witches kiss – influences people
- Mami is cocky about never loosing – to show off in front of her “new friends” - “To look cool”
- Greif seek – witches’ egg – enhances to colour of the soul gem – (purifies it)
“She has to want to be friends first, right?” – Mami Tomoe
Episode 3 – “I’m not afraid of anything anymore”
Sayaka visits Kyousuke in the hospital – brings him music – hidden colour on the carpet – Ave Maria plays – makes him cry
Mami fights a witch again – “ so unbelievable cool” - Sayaka to Mami
“This isn’t supposed to be fun. What were doing is very dangerous, don’t forget that ok.” – Mami
Mami fought a familiar – a familiar messes around without its master – a witch – they don’t carry grief seeds – familiars can also become a witch that they split off from
Mami was in a car crash with her parents and wished to be alive. She says she wished it without thinking but does not regret her decision as it is better being alive than dead.
Sayaka asks if the wish has to just be on your own or could you wish for someone else. – she meant Kyousuke at the time but denies it. Madoka picked up on it right away.
Mami said that it might not be the best idea as kyubey said that it is ok to do a wish for someone else.
“If you use your wish to grant someone elses. You should be carful on exactly why you’re doing it. Are you really doing it for someonelses benefit? Or the opposite. You’re doing it for that person’s ever lasting gratitude. The motive behind any a wish is what matters most, you know. – Mami to Sayaka mainly but to Madoka too and Kyubey
Sayaka finds it harsh, but Mami is only saying it now, so they are aware of it. “If you’re not 100% sure why your doing it then, you will definitely regret it later” – Mami
Sayaka admits she was being naïve. – Mami says you don’t need to rush into. Kyubey says the sooner you wish it the better. Mami replies with “oh please, girls don’t like pushy boys”
Kyubey really wants Madoka to become a magical girl from the beginning saying things like it will be teer and I really want you to and stuff like that. Kyubey has a hidden motive for doing these things.
“Are you looking to become powerful?” – Kyubey
“Not very smart and don’t have any talents, but if I could be a person that’s as wonderful as and as cool as Mami is, then that’s something I knoe for sure would make me happy” – Madoka to Kyubey
“If you become a magical girl, theres no doubt that you will be much more powerful than Mami. It’s true although, ia lot of it depends on what kind of wish you make. Let me put it this way, I can’t even begin to guess how big the soul gem you would create would be. I’ve never met a girl with enormous potential you have. “– Madoka
Mami meets up with Homura
“Don’t you even care?! You do know your leading innocent people into danger, don’t you?
“What are you talking about, Kyubey chose them, there apart of this now.
“Your stirring them, into becoming magical girls.
“And I guess you don’t like that.
“no, especially since Madoka Kaname is involved.
“Ah ha, I see, you’ve noticed it too have you? Her incredible potential.
“I won’t allow it, she won’t become like us”
“Afraid of someone stronger coming along to challenge you? That kind of thinking is only for loosers.”
“I don’t want to fight, but you leave m no choice.”
“Then just make sure you and I don’t see each other again. Were through talking after tonight. Next time you can bet we’ll have it out”
Grief seed at the hospital
Kyousuke didn’t want to see Sayaka the next day – she called him rude – but she didn’t see that he was upset by the music the day before
Madoka spots a grief seed – Sayaka doesn’t like that the grief seed could disappear and go else where since, it is near the hospital Kyousuke is in.
Kybey asks if Sayaka is scared, she is and suggests her to make a wish
Says it’s an important decision to make, so she wants to make sure she doing the right thing – but later she realizes it was not the right thing to do
Homura appears again tells Mami to leave. As she is hunting this pray. Mami first said that she didn’t want to see Homura again. Homura says she will make sure Sayaka and Kyubey wil get out safely. At this time she means well but Mami doesn’t trust her. Traps Homura in red chain ribbion. Everytime she moves, it gets tighter. Homura warns her that this witch is not like the others. So, at this point she knows what will happen. She is trying to save them and keep them out of danger or from them being killed. Mami says to her to be a good girl and will release her after she finishes defeating the witch. Homura still warns them to not go.
Madoka and Mami’s last talk
Never been good at skl, nothing special about her, don’t have any talents, “I’m scared this is the way my life is gonna stay. Always asking for help and not being able to help when people need it. I can’t stand thinking about it. But then I met you Mami, you showed me what it’s like to stand up for people and really help them. And then, when I found out that I might be able to do the same thing, I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my life. And that’s my wish, cuz if I can become a magical girl that would be a dream come true for me. I might not be good at anything but if I can help peopleout like you then I can be proud of the way I live. That’s the best thing I could wish for.” – Madoka
“It won’t be easy you will get hurt. You won’t have time to go on dates or have fun with your friends,” – Mami
“I know but after I’ve seen how you keep doing your best, I really look up to you Mami,” - MK
“I don’t deserve it; you need a better roll model. I just pretend to be cool, when I’m scared or hurt theres no one I can talk to. All I can do is pri on my own. Its not fun being a magical girl,”- MT
“I hear you Mami but, you’re not alone anymore,” MK
“Your right I’m not alone,” MT
[screen shot with yellow and blue pills] – blue and yellow pills treat headaches
“I’ve found someone who’s willing to stand and fight by my side from now on. Will you really stay with me,” (With tears in her eyes) - MT
“Yes, if someone like me will do,” - MK
“If you can’t decide on anything after I finish up this witch, we’ll have a feast. And you can ask kyubey for a fabulous cake. – MT
Throw a party – celebrate the two of them becoming a magical girl duo
Bright lights, yellow – transformation – magical girl music
While fighting familiars – “I feel so light, I’ve never felt this happy during battle. I’m not afraid of anything anymore, because I’m not alone anymore.”
Dark transition
Fights the witch – squeezes it out of its first from – a new form comes out and eats Mami killing her. She only dies because her soul gem shattered. – symbolized by the broken teacup the grief seed lands on and breaks
Sayaka and Madoka are horrified – Kyubey uses this opportunity to make contracts with them, but they are too stunted to speak
Homura saves them. Teleportsnts and puts bombs in its mouth.
“Never forget what happened here, this is what it means to be a magical girl,”
“Give it back, give it back. It’s her’s, it’s Mami’s! IT BELONGS TO HER! YOU CAN’T HAVE IT, IT BELONGS TO MAMI!”
“Your right but this can only belong to a magical girl therefore, neither of you has any right to touch it,” – walks away
- Multiple chairs in the rooms
- Kyosuke’s hospital room
- Sayaka has a long chair – probably foreshadowing her tall witch form
- Mami selfishly bringing Madoka and Sayaka into a witch’s labyrinth
- Not smart or talented – becoming magical and smart – enormous potential – constantly referring to how much power she could possess while being a magical girl (Kyubey) she could be like Mami since she thinks Mami is a role model. She is one year older however she is still young.
- Innocent people into danger – Homura to Mami
- Mami thinks Homura is jealous of Madoka
- Homura wants Mami to stop luring Sayaka and Madoka into witches’ labyrinths mainly for Madoka’s sake – she doesn’t want Madoka to become a magical girl
- Kyubey pushing Sayaka to make a contract and become a magical girl when in the witch’s labyrinth with Kyubey cuz Sayaka likes helping people and is also considering at this point of helping Kyosuke
- When Sayaka became a magical girl there were yellow flowers symbolizing Mami as Mami had flower ornaments in her hair and centred around her magical girl transformation
- Homura warning Mami of the strong witch – foreshowing her death – too ignorant to listen to Homura and wants to get rid of the witch on her own to prove to her new friends she is strong
- Madoka wanting to help people – looking up to Mami, be like her – says she is weak, not confident, or as beautiful as Mami or Homura
- Mami has no friends, being alone – not a role model – Mami becomes reckless because she feels she is not alone anymore – forgetting Homura’s warning – too focused on helping her friends – she dies
- The atmosphere changes – Kyubey still tries to make a contract with Sayaka or Madoka even though Mami just died he may have tried to act like he cared but it was just pure manipulation
- Homura steps in – tells Madoka and Sayaka “don’t forget this – this is what it means to be a magical girl”
- Sayaka has shown hate/ dislike towards Homura – probably because Homura is constantly disrespecting the true ways of being a magical girl that Mami showed her. That’s why it hurt her how Mami died.
- Both Sayaka and Madoka looked up to Mami as she was the ideal typical perfect magical girl. Her happy demeaner and flashy transformation and amazing combat skills when fighting witches.
Epsiode 4 – “Miracles and magic exist”
Sayaka meet Kyousuke again, but he is not in his bed or in his room – in physical therapy – nurses say Sayaka visits him a lot and how it’s a good thing cuz he’s a difficult case, he needs encouragement and I think she gives him that. He was a musical prodigy before the accident. The violin – even if he learns to walk again – his fingers will never recover enough for him to play again. – wishes it was her instead of him
She says if she wishes him better how would he feel about it, would he just say thanks, thanks that’s it? – or am I hoping something more will happen - what am I thinking I’m horrible – I really didn’t understand back then how much it is to pray for a miracle or the price of one.
Futuristic house
Anything yellow reminds Madoka of Mami – has flashbacks of Mami and her death – I’m alive and it’s good
Madoka is afraid of death – Sayaka says you need this kind pf courage or experience to want to fight. Says its selfish but Madoka was thinking about her family at the time and herself. Her death is hard for Madoka to cope with more than Sayaka. Sayaka is worried about Kyousuke more.
Madoka and Homura walk home together
Madoka says that Homura is a veteran like Mami – a veteran – long experiences in a certain field in this case a long experience in being a magical girl.
Homura is happy her warning has gone through to Madoka and that one girl is alive. So shes not really a bad person. But just rather very concerned for Madoka and only Madoka. She does not disregard others but treats then In a certain way if they are doing wrong to Madoka. That’s not the right attitude th do it but, she’s been doing it for years so her personality has changed. The repetitive deaths and tragedy has changed her completely and will never go back to her old self. She’s not all there. She has seen so many deaths so many times. Madoka evens asks and it forshadows that.
Gvae up counting the number of deaths long ago.
Didn’t have family – be a very long time before she’s reported missing. No one will know that shes dead. “It’s a fate most magical girls can look forward too, eventually”
All alone and fought to protec everyone – and no one will know she’s gone – it will be like she never existed. “We are not protectors. We fight for the sake of our wishes. I guess that’s just the way it is. – Madoka says she will remember her and never forget her. “Mami is lucky – she would be happy to hear that, how I envy her” – I won’t forget u too Homura, I’m always going to remember you. – it slightily hurts Homura here as she doesn’t remember her as she is from a diffren timeline. Madoka doesn’t truly know Homura but Homura knows Madoka. “Remember this and take to heart, kindness sometimes leads to even greater tragedy”
Madoka is extremely upset by the death of Mami – is sorry for being weak – she blames herself for not becoming a magical girl to help her. Madoka is upset because on Madoka saw the true version of Mami. Leaves her notebooks with her drawings in Mami’s home.
Sayaka visits Kyousuke again
The girl with the flaxen hair – part of the soundtrack (La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin) – based off the original by David Oistrakh – Debussy Prelude – beautiful song – dissociated (Kyousuke)
“Stop torturing me already” “Why do you keep coming here, come on already, do think I really like listening to this music, it’s like you’re trying to hurt me. I don’t wanna hear this crap anymore, what’s the point if I can’t play. All I can do is listen, I – just – I – just – (smashes his hand on the CD player – can’t move his hand or feel the pain – it’s useless – the current medicine can’t help his hand anymore. Hve hope Sayaka says. Unless magic and miracles become real -but they are – miracles magic they are real
[Screen shot kyubey arrives] – he comes when girls are most desperate
- When you die in a labyrinth as a magical girl – you won’t be remembered in the real world
- Mami had no family or friends, lived alone and died alone – basically not fulfilling her wish. She also hides her - troubled emotions about the true meaning of a magical girl. She put on a happy rosy tinted filter on herself so she could gain friends and show Madoka and Sayaka this rosy theme of magical girls. This is so she can convince them to join her so she wouldn’t have to fight on her own anymore.
- “Kindness can lead to even greater tragedy” – Homura Akemi
- Kyousuke is upset by hearing the music cuz he can’t play cuz of his hand injury – the doctors said he will never play again – He lashes put at Sayaka saying she is toeturing him playing music he can’t physically create with his hands. The sound of music pains him. Sayaka is clearly upset by how upset Kyosuke was and so for his pain to go away to heal him.
Madoka finds hitomi infected with a witch’s kiss and is caught in a witch – labyrinth
- “I’m going somewhere wonderful, that’s where” – Hitomi to Madoka
- Hitomi walks strangely alone with other adults
- “I’m worthless its true, im a failure. I couldn’t even keep this little factory’s doors open long enough to turn a profit. Theres no room for a person like me in today’s world. I ‘m obsolete.
- Madoka notices the chemicals the are missing and Madoka’s mum previously warned her about mixing them up as they could die.
- “this is a Sacred ceremony and we can’t have you interrupting it” – Hitomi
There is a lot of foreshadowing with the scene where a load of people that are infected by a witch’s kiss go off to a secluded area and start mixing chemicals together. Hitomi is also infected and Madoka is trying to stop them. Hitomi “Yes and were going to go on a wonderful journey to a maginificant new world. Don’t you see what a amazing opportunity this is. We can finally be able to get rid of these bodies that hold us back. oh, Madoka, in a little while you will understand too” – the adults clap
Coward and a liar – punishment – while Madoka is in a witch’s labyrinth (guilty for Mami’s death) – witch turning her to despair – different animation style - shows tv’s. feed on humans despair and guilt and negative emotions. Replays memories of Mami on the distorted tv’s
“I wonder if this, is my punishment. For being a coward. And a liar. I guess this is what I deserve.” - MK
Sayaka appears – saves Hitomi and the other adults – Homura watches from afar -
Witches forming in abandoned factories – industrial areas
Kyoko also shows up at the end of episode 4 watching Sayaka from afar. Heard Mami died. “Put her dumb rookie ass into commission, permanently”
Episode 5 – “There’s no way I’ll regret it
She forms a contract with Kyubey to heal him and his hand. So, he can play music again. Maybe even be with Sayaka since she loves him/likes him. She either fell in love with the music or fell in love with the person that played the music at the time. I don’t think it was love but pure admiration.
Not thinking about Mami’s warning, she becomes a magical not for herself like Mami but to heal someone else, thus giving her healing magic. Your wish that you make is a part of the type of magic you have.
Kybuey turns up at the right moments
Sayaka became a magical girl for Kosuke so he can use his hand again to play music – she has no regrets currently, but she will later. Madoka is afraid for her. (A miracle) – Sayaka also likes Kyousuke too.
Madoka and Sayaka talk
Sayaka is very happy at this point
“I magical girl Sayaka will protect the peace of Mitakihara city” – SM
One regret so far would be that she is waiting so long cuz of Mami’s death, she might have been able to help her.
I think Sayaka should have been truthful about what her true motive was for wishing for someone else when she asked Mami, she might have gotten alive before doing so now. I think that Mami knew Kyoko too.
“I was meant to be a magical girl. So, I shouldn’t of dragged my feet about it for as long as I did. I knew what I wanted more than anything else. If it meant I had to risk my life fighting witches, so what? I would of wished for it anyway. It took a long time to realise how much that wish meant. So that’s a little frustrating. So, after all that my point is don’t feel guilty, its ok if you don’t want to be a magical girl too. Maybe you just not meant for it.”
Sayaka visits Kyousuke for the last time
Not relasing him yet until, he’s legs have fully healed
Apologised for being rude
Takes him up to the roof and plays Ave Maria
Rooftop has a garden of flowers
“Hey Mami, see that, my wish has been granted. Theres no way ill ever regrets it. Now this is the happiest monet of my life” (similar to Mami’s happiest last moment of her life)
Kyoko is watching Sayaka through a telescope using magic to enhance the vision. Pick a fight with her. Kyubey says Homura is an irregularity in this world.
Madoka meet with Madoka at the mall
Madoka wants to talk about Sayaka - stubborn, hyper – sensitive and likes to argue a lot – is a wonderful person, brave, and help someone when they need it.
Fatly flaws for magical girls
Naïve – too kind
Carless – too bold
How hard you try to protect others – theres no gratitude - once they can’t understand those things, they aren’t fit to be magical girls
So Madoka was worried if Sayaka is ok to be a magical girl -“that’s why Mami Tomoe lost her life” – “don’t talk about her that way” – Madoka replies to Homura
Madoka is worried about Sayaka as she says that she is ok on her own. But she is worried that Sayaka could die like Mami did – Homura ackoledges Madoka’s worry for Sayaka
Asks Homura to be friends with Sayaka since Madoka can’t do anything. So its safer, instead of fighting each other like how Mami and Homura fought. - “I don’t make a habit of telling lies or keeping promises I can’t keep therefore you should forget about Sayaka Miki” – cries “ why should I?” – MK – HA
“She shouldn’t of been allowed to make the contract, I’m partly to blame for it – I’ll admit that, I should of looked out for her as I do for you. But, although I’m partly to blame you must understand. This is a mistake she can neither undo nor recover from. The same as how the dead can never return to life. Once you become a magical girl, there is no turning back. When we decide to make a contract, we give everything up in exchange for one single wish. – HA
Yes – Homura has given up on herself and all the other girls – “no matter how many sins she has to bare she will continue her fight.” – HA
“If I’ve wasted your time I’m sorry” – HA
Sayaka’s witch hunt
Madoka offers to go out with Sayaka to help hunt witches – calls Madoka stubborn – Tells Madoka her hands are shaking. So she is scared and nervous but would never really show it as much but tries to be strong for Madoka so she doesn’t worry. Will protect Madoka
Sayaka likes to be strong and hide her emotions. Fast healer cuz she asked for her wish to heal someone
Sayyaka finds a familiar tries to fight it then Kyoko appears. Kyoko intimidates and tries to fight Sayaka
Kyoko comes off as arrogant. She only cares about power and beating weaker magical girls. Competitive. She only cares for fighting witches so she can get grief seeds. She doesn’t care if people get hurt or familiars consume them so they can become witches.
Familiars need to consume people so they later can become a witch. They when you kill the witch you get a grief seed. Only cares about the “amazing” magic she gets from getting grief seeds. “The food chain” the witches go nd eat weak humans and we hunt them down and eat the witches” The weak gives up to the strong” “Its only natural” (Kyubey has said that line before)
“doesn’t believe in fighting for justice and hope
Enjoys seeing weak people and is always seen eating – referring to how greedy she may be
Fractured imagery of Madoka – multiple timelines and strings
Episode 6 - “This just isn’t right”
Homura Stops Kyoko and Sayaka from killing each other.
Mami, Homura, Kyoko and Madoka if they all were magical girls and still alive are stronger than Sayaka.
Sayaka is not fit to be a mgical girl
Homura is constantly trying to stop Madoka from making a contract – she mentioned how she will go to drastic measures.
Kyubey has added fuel to the fire, not only did he say that all the other current magical girls are stronger than her but also Madoka, even though she isn’t even a magical girl. So it would come across as unfair to her. She is struggling the most. She also has to deal with Kyoko wanting to fifth her. Madoka suggests reasoning but that will never work.
Battle to the death for reals - talking with her is out of the question – Kyoko only cares about getting grief seeds regardless if oeople get hurt
So Sayaka won’t get along with her. Madoka is trying but Sayka is stubborn. Same with Homura she also does not like Homura either. Her personality is changing. She is starting to see how real it is being a madigca girl and how strong you have to be. She always mentions mami too. Sayaka is serious about how Kyoko and Homura are the same and that they only care about themselves. She blames Homura for Mami’s death when she doesn’t even know what happnend. Madoka saw but didn’t say what really happened. So from here her hatred for Homura grew. She barley knows Kyoko and can’ say much.
She wanted this power to do whats right and portect the ones she loves. Sayaka is behaving recklessly.
[screen shots of Madoka and Sayaka]
Just because you’re trying to do the right thing doesn’t mean you’ll get a happy ending – Madoka’s mum
Doing the wrong thing for someone can be the right thing to do
Doing nothing or doing something
Three chairs are now in Kosuke’s hospital room when he leaves (in the movie) in the episode
Body and his soul will be yours – Kyoko to Sayaka
Saying how you have you’re a magical girl and you can use your magic to have whatever you want. Says things like you could break all his limbs if you wanted too.
If your wat him to love you
Just saying unkind and horrible things Sayaka can do to forcefully make Kyousuke hers (love her and stuff) so they go to the bridge to finish off the fight they started on their first meeting.
Kyoko and Sayaka fight scene (second fight on the bridge)
This is when they find out that their soul is their soul gem so if their soul gem is too far away from their body – their body is just a shell
Kyubey didn’t want them to fight in their usual “fragile bodies”, so he transferred their souls into the soul gems. So, their bodies are just an empty shell. Their bodies can get damaged as much as they can and can be repaired by magic, but they won’t feel that pain cuz their soul is not directly connected to their bodies.
Kyubey doesn’t understand human emotions or why they all reacted the way they did when they found out
Episode 7 – Can you face your true feelings?
Sayak is at home – Kyoko whas to talk to her. They walk together and talk. Talk about what Kyubey did to them and how it “sucks”
She says to think about it has that it is for herself, and she only has herself to blame. Kyoko is ok with it. Only cares about powers and not the details. Doesn’t have regrets.
Honest man and too kind – something new to religion – preaching stuff that wasn’t in the bible – the church kicked him out
Treated him like a psycho – people don’t like hearing stuff that was different
Kyoko’s Dad was a priest, and he said a lot of church stuff. People weren’t listening to his preaching, so Kyoko’s family suffered a lot of loss like food. That’s why she was upset when Sayaka wasted the apple she offered. So, Kyoko wanted to save her dad and make people come by to the church to hear his prays. In the meantime, Kyoko was fighting witches alone – to help her dad “in the shadows”. Later her dad found out what Kyoko did, he called her a witch. He became depressed and killed his own family then committed suicide. Leaving Kyoko alone.
“An evil witch that corrupted his flock”
“Good and bad everything 0s out”
So, what she was trying to say was that wishing to help someone else will only cause more bad things to happen. Kyoko is trying to help Sayaka to just go for what she wants instead of trying to help people. Kyoko wanted Sayaka to join her. However, Sayaka disagrees with Kyoko’s methods of using her magical girl abilities for herself.
Sayaka believe magical girls should be helping people, saving them from witches. Not watching from afar. Only killing witches for your own benefit.
Kyoko and Sayaka’s dynamic in this series is like Adam and Eve. Eve being Kyoko and Sayaka being Adam or another Eve. God created two humans, Sayaka and Kyoko. They are both there to lead the others that will come (the other magical girls). Kyoko ate from the forbidden fruit of causing her whole family to die and fight witches for all enternity. While Sayaka does not eat the forbidden fruit but she soon sucomes into deep despair as time goes on that way no one will be able to save her.

Sayaka later finds out that Hitomi likes Kuosuke and says she is going to confess to him the next day after school. Hitomi says things like she does not want to interfere with Kosuke and Sayaka’s relationship or effect their own friendship. She was just being clear about what she wants unlike Sayaka. It is shown throughout that she likes Kosuke, but she never told him. Hitomi also noticed how Sayaka likes Kousuke too. So, she gave her a day to think about it and try to confess on her own.
“I take our friend very seriously”
However, Sayaka was overwhelmed, starting to regret saving Hitomi for a little bit. She felt horrible about it and told Madoka. She said that she doesn’t deserve a friend like you (Madoka). Madoka still comforts her anyways.
I’m going to lose Kyosuke to Hitomi”
Because she likes helping people and didn’t think about herself Hitomi later ends up dating him. Sayaka also doesn’t do anything because her body is not really hers. “She cries to Madoka he won’t be able to hold her like this because she’s already dead.
Kyoko and Homura watches Sayaka fight her first witch
Sayaka’s theme plays
Sayaka then becomes distraught. She goes on a killing spree, killing multiple witches. Being reckless because her body is not even hers anyways. This is her way of dealing with her despair. Kyoko tries to help but she still fights the witches on her own. Being a magical girl allows her to feel no pain.
The bus stop/ shelter scene when it’s raining – episode 8 – “I was stupid... so stupid” serena ira plays
Madoka is in pain watching her fight so recklessly
“How can anything be good for me when I’ve been turned into a monster”
“I’m just a walking corpse, pretending to stay alive” – Sayaka
“Who’s gonna help me now”
“Then why don’t you fight for a change?” Sayaka to Madoka
Sayaka pills that Kyubey saud that you have more potential than anyone (meaning Madoka does)
Sayaka thinks she is the only one suffering
Kyoko and Homura talk at Homura apartment
A curse growing inside Sayaka and used too much magic – so her soul is fading
Kyubey foreshadows how Sayaka is on her way of becoming a witch.
Tainted soul gem needs to be purified.
Sayaka skips school – Madoka wishes she went after Sayaka since she didn’t return to skl the next day
Madoka goes to Sayaka’s house to look for Sayaka. She asks the parents, but she hasn’t come back since the night Madoka and Sayaka argued. (This is the last time that Madoka saw Sayaka) – Madoka still tries to look for her
Hitomi confessing her love to Kosuke has made her worse – her response is to fight more witches recklessly succumbing to despair
Homura and Sayaka
Sayaka says she is going to be a different type of magical girl. One that only uses her magic to help people and not themselves. “Not for selfish reasons”
Homura confronts Sayaka and gives her a grief seed to cleanse her soul gem. She warns her that she will die but, Sayayak doesn’t care. If she is alive all she is good for is killing witches. And she will only die if she hets killed fighting witches, so her purpose isn’t lost. However, she has lost herself and no longer cares for her own wellbeing regardless of if she is going to die. “No one needs me anyways, right?!” - “The world doesn’t need a magical girl if she can’t even kill a witch”
. Homura sounds concerned and asked Sayaka why she is doing this to herself. Tourturing herself. Sayaka doesn’t fall fir the question but however analyes Homura’s true intentions. Sayaka kicks it away and refuses any help from Homura. Sayaka can tell that Homura doesn’t really care about Sayaka’s safety – says how her tone of voice makes her sound like she has given up all hope. - Homura’s true intentions revealed and told by Sayaka
Homura mentions how all of this to do with Sayaka has everything to do with Madoka
Homura admits that Sayaka is right about her. However, if she causes Madoka to suffer more then she will have no choice but to kill Sayaka.
Kyoko saved Sayaka from Homura
The train scene
The men on the train were acting like their girlfriend was trying too hard, or her “wanting to get married” like the girl was a try hard. It bothered them by the tone in which they were speaking.
She overhears two men bad mouthing about their girlfriend. It bothers her because she was fighting for a boy that she liked however he has chosen someone else. She says how “the girl is fighting hard and you’re here badmouthing her calling her a bitch.
“Hey is this world worth protecting?”
“what have I been fighting for all this time, answer me”
“Why did I even become a magical girl”
“Was it all for nothing” -
Madoka and Kybey then Homura comes - making a wish
High potential told by Kyubey to Madoka – more than miracles – twist the laws of the universe – become the god of this world
Kills kuybey – Homura’s theme plays – stops time – stops Madoka from making a wish and forming a contract
Incubator = Kyubey
Sayaka’s hero monologue the end of her tragedy
Kyoko finds her at the train station sitting alone – miserable
Kyoko asks if she is still going to continue “this stubborn thing”
Sayaka:
“I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused”
Kyoko:
“Huh that doesn’t sound like you at all”
Sayaka goes on to say she can’t remember anymore, or that she doesn’t remember what was worth protecting “it doesn’t make sense anymore”
“balance means good and bad has to 0 themselves out right” – understanding – saved people -
Envy + hate – “I got angrier and my heart full of envy and hate” – hurt her friend (Madoka)
“For all the happiness you wish for someone, someone else gets cursed with equal misery” – “that’s how it works for magical girls and that’s how it is for me”
“I was stupid so damn stupid” Sayaka to Kyoko (crying
The soul gem turns into a grief seed when it loses its colour and becomes fully murky with despair
Hope and despair theme
She becomes consumed by despair. She later turns into a witch
Epsode 9
Witches theme plays
Sayaka’s witch form is filled with music notes and random things. Some things that represent her and what she knows. There’s a lot of water representing her tears. Music theatre, music posters, orchestra, seats, and violin.
Screams and cries heard from Sayaka’s witch form they sound angry
And music notes
Homura and Kyoko leave Sayaka’s labyrinth and bring her body with them
And music notes
Madoka turns up at the train tracks finds out Sayaka is now a witch – she is shocked and sad
Homura tells her what happened in a monotone emotionless way
Hero, protect people from witches (Sayaka)
“Her curse became as powerful as her wish”
“For each person she saves she will curse another in return”
“And you dare call yourself human” Kyoko to Homura – “no and neither should you” Homura to Kyoko
movie 3
Madoka at home and kyubey appears
“Everything weve done is the prolong the life of the universe” – Kyubey
Entropy – emotions of humans into energy – the incubators – “The energy a bonfire gives off is not equal to the energy it to grow to the wood that fuels it” – “When energy changes form some of it gets lost. W found the amount of energy in the universe is decreasing. So, we’ve been searching for a form of energy that wasn’t limited by the laws of thermo dynamics” And then we found the energy created by magical girls.
“My civilization created a technology which converts sentient life forms into energy - unfortunately our species doesn’t perform the capability to experience emotions, so we searched the universe and studied all the various species. Until we finally found you humans”
[Screenshots of the empty chairs] [change of lighting in Madoka’s room and Kyubey is now on Madoka’s shelf behind her]
“With the size of your population, and the rate in which you reproduce, we saw how the amount of emotional energy produced by a single human is greater than the amount used between birth and growth. The human soul is the energy source we need that counteracts the effects of entropy. The most effective energy came from females in their second stage of development. When they had the most intense fluctuations of hope and despair. At the precise moment when your soul gem flare out and become grief seeds an enormous amount of energy is created. As an incubator my job is to gather up that expended energy.
- Good deal for the humans since ne day the y will leave earth or whatever planet it is and would not want to find dirt or whatever he said
- As for consent before making a contract – is highly hypocrisy as they don’t display all the details in the contract and there’s no physical from of the contract – however he still says they mean no harm
- “don’t understand the concept of “tricking you”
“Why is it that when humans regret a decision, they made based on their own misunderstanding they feel resentment towards the other party” – Kyubey
“We’ve had a hard time understanding you humans and your value system too” – Kyubey
Cuz the population (9.5 billion) is huge and increases by 10 every 4 seconds – he doesn’t understand why Madoka or any human would care for the loss of a small percentage of that (meaning Mami + Sayaka)
“If you ever feel like dying for the sack of the universe, call me”
When he said humans, it changed the camera angle the empty chairs
Human soul is the source of energy
Using young girls in their second stage that are experiencing so much hope and despair
The camera angle changes to Madoka being surrounded by stuffed animals sitting in the chairs around her 11 chairs
The incubators doen’t understand why humans get so upset by regretting their dession and then blaming it on the other party – its partly true but the way they do it is evil. They don’t fully explain anything, even when they don’t ask. They play on young girl’s emotions. They don’t have a fully developed brain yet. During their teen years their brain is developing their nurons in their brain are all changing to white with all these links. Except from the frontal lobe. The frontal lope is the one part of the brain that process control and desion making. Since it is not fully developed it is hard to interaxte with the other parts of the brain. This increases the dopamine in the brain and the part that triggers emotions to work overtime. That explains why teens make rash decisions at first because they are controlled by their emotions. Your brain is likely to stop developing at age 25.
This explains why most girls made a contract with Kyubey so quickly. They make decisions without thinking, they take risks. Also, they can’t ask an adult for advice on this because adults would not believe them especially since its magic related.
The incubators lack knowledge on two things, human emotions and values. Even though they have studied humans for a long time, they still don’t understand them fully. However, some magical girls know the incubators true intentions. They simply didn’t tell them because they didn’t ask. Little eager girls are not going to ask if there is anything important, they need to know before becoming a magical girl. They must ask questions in a more specific way since the incubators can’t read their emotions.
Madoka goes to school but meets with Kyoko to think of a plan to save Sayaka
Kyoko wants to meet Madoka somewhere – stops Madoka from going to skl
Hope for saving Sayaka
Remember the voice of a friend – then maybe Sayaka can remember being human - still hope for saving Sayaka blinded by hope
“Love and courage will triumph and stuff – one of those stories – Kyoko is still a child at heart
The reasons Kyoko became a magical girl is because she lves stories like them. Sayaka was the one that reminded her.
” Love and triumph – Sayaka and Kyoko (understood each other the most)
Madoka find Sayaka’s witch labriynth
Madoka suggests that maybe Homura would want to help, Kyoko replies with how it might not be her style
Kyoko and Homura have the same goals – that’s why they are friends really – Walpurgasnacht (powerful witch)
So they teamed up so they can try and beat Walpurgasnatcht together
Madoka is always putting herself down, here she calls herself a coward – how other people are always doing the fighting for her. – to me it now sounds like guilt – she feels guilty for not fighting as a magical girl like Sayaka said.
Her guilt is eating at her here - it’s the same guilt she felt when Mami died, when Kyoko and Sayaka were fighting when they met, When Sayaka found out about her soul gem, when Sayaka got upset at Madoka and when she let Sayaka run off, trying to make a contract with Kyubey to relieve her guilt for what happened with Sayaka and now
Madoka always feels responsible for the misfortunes of the passed magical girls and the situations that happened to them. I think that is what the multiple chairs symbols, the passing of the previous magical girls
So Sayaka’s witch labyrinth is different than the first one, it is in the form of a theatre with multiple red seats and a fake orchestra playing her witch theme with the composer – but Sayaka’s witch from is mimicking or controlling the composer of the fake paper orchestra
“Hey God, if your there, my life sucked so please let me have a happy dream” – hinting she always has nightmares. Despite her being called a witch by her father, she still believes in God despite her sinful actions she has done.
“You can’t fight and carry her you will get us both killed” – Kyoko to Homura – Homura said this the first time they were in Sayaka’s labyrinth
“You gotta focus on the one thing that is important or close to you and fight till the end”
Sucks being alone - tells Homura to go
Sacrifices herself (her soul gem) to stop Sayaka in her witch form. Does it on her own with love. (Like an offering)
and is killed by Kyoko. Kyoko sacrifices herself because she has no one else but Sayaka and only cared for her. She had nothing to lose.
Constant red sky
Homura treated her kindly other than Madoka
Kyubey knew that Kyoko wouldn’t have been able to save Sayaka. He only cared preserving energy from her death for entropy. Homura asked for the truth and that is what she got. He knew and didn’t try to stop her but – he didn’t see Kyoko’s death as meaning less but rather helpful
Episode 10 – “I won’t rely on anyone anymore”
Madoka is constantly watching everyone suffer.
First timeline:
Heart condition – away from school
Madoka is friendly in this timeline – Homura is shy
Theres a lot of foreshadowing of how Homura and Madoka met the same camera angles and phrases used in a different context – the current Homura reminds me of the current Madoka in the current timeline
Homura used to be a lot like Madoka in the current timeline. Homura is super shy, slightly bullied, isn’t good at maths, can’t do sports cuz of her heart condition.
Got lured into a witch labyrinth – feeling bad about herself and wanting to die. Saved by Madoka and Mami.
Mami is a veteran
Fully train madoka
“It wasn’t worth saving me if you aren’t alive” – Homura
“I wish I can meet miss Kaname all over again but this time instead of her protecting me I wanna be strong enough to protect her”
Madoka fights Walpursnacht alone – Mami dies, and Homura is not a magical girl yet
Second timeline:
Trains to become a better magical girl, weapons, and time ability. Still with Mami and Madoka.
Creates weapons and bombs
Defeats her first witch with help from Mami and Madoka
Madoka becomes a witch
Third timeline:
Tells everyone about how magical girls turn into witches – they don’t believe her
Gets other weapons – guns
Sayaka turns into a witch anyway
Saves Madoka by killing Sayaka (in her witch form)
Mami kills Kyoko and tries to kill Homura. SO she needs to kill all magical girls to avoid the fate of all of them turning into witches
Madoka kills Mami to save Homura
“How about we both become witches and tear up this rotten world together. Until theres no more evil, no more sadness, until theres nothing left we will break and smash and pound it into dust. What if we do that, wouldn’t that be great” – Homura Akemi
Madoka gave Homura the last grief seed as they are the only two left
“do something I couldn’t do, you can go back in time, to chsnge everything, so that we don’t end up like this, save me from being stupid, tricked, don’t let Kyubey fool me again” – Madoka
Says to Homura don’t let me be tricked by Kyubey
“I swear I’ll save you; I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe, I’ll come back again and again and again” - Homura
“Can I ask for one more thing, don’t let me turn into a witch I know there are awful, horrible things in this world I know that now, but theres a lot of things worth protecting too. Finally, you called me by my first name, I’m so happy”
Kills Madoka before turning into a witch – Most painful thing for Homura to do
Fourth timeline: Decided to fight witches by herself, not rely on anyone. No one will believe her about the future.
“I won’t let Madoka fight”
Tries to defeat Walpurgasnacht by herself
Madoka’s dream – seeing Homura fighting Walpursnacht. Tries to stop Madoka from listening to Kyubey. Madoka turns into a witch a powerful witch
Becomes a magical girl – defeated walpurgasnatcht with one blow then turns into a witch – “no more than 10 days to destroy the planet”
A long as Kyubey grants enough energy to from magical girls even Madoka then they have “fulfilled their quote and no longer care for the outcome as “it’s your problem now”
- Fifth timeline is the Current timeline
Episode 11 - The only guidepost remaining
Kyubey’s theory:
- Multiple timelines to converge
- All the different times attached them to Madoka Kamame
- Homura unconsciously made Madoka the most powerful witch ever
Kyubey discovers Homura is a time traveller. Travelling back to the same timeline repeating it over and over again trying to achieve the outcome she wants. Explains why Madoka has so much potential as a magical girl
“A magical girls potential is based on the karmic destiny she bares, if she were a queen or a messiah, I could have understood but Madoka was given an ordinary life so it was hard for me to understand why she would be the focal point for so many destinies but now. Say Homura could it be that Madoka’s potential to become the most powerful magical girl is because you kept turning back time. I thought so you are the cause of it. Or rather a side effect of your magic caused her to become that way. There’s only one reason why you kept repeating this timeline to save Madoka Kaname –
By turning back time over and over and each time for the same reason you unknowingly caused these multiple timelines to converge. And they all coverage around Madoka Kaname. The threads of fate of all the Madokas in all the different timelines were never linked before but if they coverge apon a single point the, Madoka in this timeline. Then that will explain why she has the magical potential she has. All the karmic destinies from all the different timelines you effected eventually will attach themselves to Madoka Kaname. After all she is the reason, this happened. Excellent work Homura you have made Madoka the most powerful witch ever.”
Sayaka’s funeral and the aftermath – Serena ira plays
- When Sayaka is at her lowest there is symbolism of rain and water and water droplets and puddles
- Water droplet from a straw – at the same time as Madoka lying about knowing anything about Sayaka – maybe it represents a white lie Imagery of multiple chairs
- Talks about how humans chose livestock to be sold bred and fed. Compares how the incubators treat humans to how humans treat livestock.
- Incubators have been around for a long time – wishes to despair
- Wishes would have betrayed them not the incubators
- Suffering of magical girls benefit from all the lives of those magical girls
- Emotion is a mental disorder where the incubators are from
“Do you feel any guilt or remorse for the livestock you consume? Have you ever though about how those animals become the food you eat?”
“Your reaction isn’t very rational” – after Madoka told him to stop showing the animals through his eyes
“Humans chose livestock for food in exchange they are breed to reproduce and protected from predators for their whole lives. Cows pigs and chickens have a much higher rate of survival in captivity. More than they would in tbe wild, So you see the relationship is neutrally beneficial for both parties.
Kyubey thinks incubators treat humans with much more respect than humans treat their livestock
“We acknowledge your species as a sentient one and try to deal fairly with you”
“Humans and the incubators have shared history together. We have intervened your civilizations developments since prehistoric times. Throughout the ages countless girls have made contracts with incubators. Have their wishes granted and succumb to despair. Beginning with a wish and ending with a curse, it’s the cycle every magical girl has repeated up till now. Some have started revolutions that changed history. While others elevated human society to new levels.
Oh no we weren’t the ones who betrayed them, you could say their wishes did though. Wishes are things that don’t exist in the current reality and anything that deviates from reality is bound to create a distortion. So why does it surprise anyone that these things end in disaster. It’s the natural outcome after all. If they think that’s some kind of betrayal, they shouldn’t of made the wish in the first place. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think they are foolish; it was thanks to their sacrifices that human society developed as far as it has.”
“It was the suffering of all the magical girls throughout history that lived the foundations of the life you have now.”
“If your civilization benefits from this sacrifice, why should the lives of you people matter in the grant scheme of things.”
“If we were capable of comprehending such things we wouldn’t have come to your planet in the first place.”
“You see in our society, the phenomenon you call “emotion” is considered a mental disorder. We were surprised when we discovered the human species. We never imagined there could be a world where each individual had their own set of emotions. Yet still manage to co – exist with one another.”
“So then if your kind had never come to earth none of this – Madoka
“The truth is, you humans would most likely still be living naked, In caves.” – Kyubey
Madoka’s teacher and mother talk
[screenshot for Sayaka and Kyoko’s sacrifice/ death – foreshadowing of the lighting]
Foreshadowing of Madoka’s mum and her teacher. Discussing Sayaka’s death, missing 9th grader (Mami). Hitomi not taking it well. They think Sayaka may have run away from home. They think it might have been a fight between a friend over a boy. Madoka’s mum says how she can’t tell how Madoka is feeling about it. She thinks she knows that Madoka might know something about. Is frustrated that Madoka hasn’t come to her if something is bothering her. The teacher goes on to say that Madoka’s Mum is still quite impatient and refers her to Junko.
- Mum is impatient and wants to know if Madoka knew anything about Sayaka
- Teacher refers to Madoka’s mum as impatient and tells her how Madoka needs time to get her head around all of this – she needs time to heal and to figure out her feelings.
This shows again that Madoka is taking risks because she is not sure what to do about the situation. Therefore, most teen is guided by their parents while their brain is still developing. The frontal lope is the sense of control, order and rules. Less developed than the other parts of the brain. So, teens are controlled by emotions. Which Incubators do not understand?
A common trait among other parents. = worrying for their child – can sense that something is wrong, but they won’t say to them but keep it to themselves.
When ever it’s just the girls by themselves or they are fighting witches or walking into a witch’s labyrinth – the areas are similar. Abandoned factories, gritty areas and dark areas too. Shows how the magical girl world and reality are too different worlds. Reality is seen through Rosey tinted glasses. And magical girl’s world is dark.
Madoka visits Homura’s house – Homura’s theme plays
Walpurgasnatcht – symbolizies the hidden meaning of Walpurgis night. A traditional holiday celebrated on April 30th in north Europe and Scandinavia. Dressing up in costumes, playing pranks and created loud sounds – which is supposed to keep the evil at bay.
Madoka wants to help Homura fight walpurgasnatcht since Kyoko and the others are gone. Madoka knows Homura won’t be able to do it on her own. So now she is trying to make a decision.
Homura constantly lies since she believes no one would believe her if she said the truth. – She lied about how she could defeat the witch on her own and really didn’t need Kyoko’s help but she just, accepted to be nice or whatever it was.
Madoka knew she was lying – it put tears in her eyes – it seems lies in the series through create tears
Walpurgasnacht arrives and Homura fights it
Homura is stubborn about fighting the witch by herself because she hasn’t given up hope. If it doesn’t work out, fshe will just leave this time line and start all over again. She will continuously be doing it, fighting this “meaningless” events. It’s impossible for Homura to stop or give up at this point.
“The moment she acknowledges that everything she’s done is pointless and your fate is impossible to change Homura Akmei will fall into despair and turn into a grief seed. She knows it to be true and that’s why she has no choice. She has to keep fighting regardless of whether she can win or not.
As long as she thinks there’s hope she is doomed – same for the past magical girls

Homura realizes that her turning back time will worsen Madoka’s fate – her soul gem stats to become dark

“You’ll never be the same, you won’t exist as a physical entity anymore. Dying will be a kinder fat. For the rest of time, you will live on as an entity, whose sole purpose is to destroy witches,” – Mami
“I know and I’m ready. If someone ever tells me it’s a mistake to have hope well then, I LL JUST TELL THEM there wrong and ill keep telling them until they believe. No matter how many times it takes.
“Sounds good to me. If you think you can do it, then do it. I mean you found your reason to fight ya. And you aint running away anymore, right? So theres nothing holding ya back. Anyway, now its time to get your ass in gear and go full speed ahead. “
Mami gives Madoka her notebook back with all her magical girl designs in them.
Giving them their hope back and becoming hope – the hope of magical girls everywhere.

- Madoka is Hope
- Homura is Despair

- – however, because she wished to erase all witches her despair will always be destroyed
- She doesn’t exist, no one will remember her. No one will know she ever existed. She will be a concept. She won’t be able to interact with anyone. She has crossed onto another plan, so she is no longer apart of this universe. Except for Homura. - Homura says Madoka wouldn’t want this to happen, after everything she has done. “I don’t believe it” – “This is worse than death”

Homura reminded of Madoka calls out saying her name. Kyoko and Mami do not know who Madoka is or who she was.
Madoka’s little brother remembers Madoka and draws her in her magical girl form in the sand.
Madoka’s mum also remembers the name Madoka but can’t picture her. Then she goes on to complement Homura’s red ribbion in her hair. She says how its cute and if she had a daughter, she would make her wear it.
Explains new universe to kuybey without thinking of the consequences later.
The curses haven’t completely disappeared but just change their form. – in the new world they fight raids.
“Tragedy and sadness will never disappear, but even so it the place she once tried to protect. I remember that, and I will never ever forget it. That’s why I keep fighting.”
Almost the ending
- Don’t forget.
Always, somewhere,
someone is fighting for you.
-As long as you remember her,
you are not alone.
The ending of episode 12 shows Homura alone and by herself. She is in the desert. Her wings have changed and look distorted like a witch’s labyrinth. But witches don’t exist in this new universe. Before she takes off Homura hears Madoka say “do your best” then she smiles and laughs in a slightly disturbing way. Like she has lost her way. She goes to fight off the Raids but the whole screen is covered by the same pattern that was on her wings. So maybe Homura turns into a witch. So, it is left at a cliff hanger.
- [Homura can still become a witch in the new universe because Homura has not been reborn. She has just been placed in another universe. Homura still has all her memories from the past. However, the way her soul gem works is still linked to the first timeline.]
- Madoka what they refer to as The law of cycles, but they don’t know who Madoka is only Homura knows who she is.

250+ Followers HC! Artist!MC Draws a Portrait of Nobunaga, Ieyasu, Kenshin, Mitsuhide
Requested by: @puffpuff300
Note: Thank you so much! Haha this sounds like so much fun… So here we go!
Haha… Not all of these are portraits or are they drawn, but…
Edit: I’m so sorry it took so long! But now I think I’m back in business!
Please let me know if you’d like to be (un)tagged!
--------------------------------------------
Nobunaga:
Honestly? You just loved the way the paint seems to splatter itself on the page.
No, before I properly begin, you don’t necessarily do traditional painting. You like the abstract ones. Like Piccasso… but not quite his style xD
Piccasso’s style… Would confused the shit out of NObunaga if you drew him in that style- I swear if you don’t paint him like that at least once, I’ll smack you xD
Anyway, your paints are precious to you. You know that Nobunaga might be able to get some oil paints for you, but acrylic paint has always seemed to be better for you. That, and you’ve gotten used to it.
On the night you arrive at Honnoji, you’re carrying your art satchel, filled with paint, a couple of canvases, and your beloved brushes. You were in Japan to paint some of the blooming cherry blossoms and scenery at the time.
Dragged into this mess of a Princess and chatelaine duties made you miss painting so badly. Even picking up a calligraphy brush reminded you of the calligraphy-brush style paintings you had been studying before you had arrived.
So you grab the a4-sized canvas and wander the hallways for days, as you search for the best thing to draw. Honestly? You’ve had to white the canvas multiple times simply because nothing seemed right.
That sakura tree in the corner of the castle gardens? Nope.
The bustling streets of Azuchi town in the middle of the day? Hm...
The Ghost of Mitsuhide, smirking wildly as he wanders down the hallways? Not that either.
Not even the pretty Mitsunari seemed to capture your attention for long.
Ironically though, you didn’t even think of paining the lord of the castle at first, perhaps because his ego didn’t need to be brushed up further?
At the end of the day, you’ve decided to retire to your room, having wasted the whole day wandering the town and castle, listlessly, tirelessly and unsuccessfully seeking the perfect scene to paint.
Weirdly enough, just after dinner, you somehow end up outside the tenshu, peering through the gap the raven-haired lord left in the doorway.
What a sight, though, to see Nobunaga hard at work, that frown finally focused on something other than yourself. You’re suddenly filled with inspiration, and you set down opposite the gap, sketching the outline of exactly what you’re seeing: the gap between the doorway, and Nobunaga seated at his desk.
You know he can see you: You’ve spotted that all-knowing smirk of his. But he doesn’t speak or move until you begin to leave, having finally marked out the correct colours in pencil.
“Fireball, you may enter the room if you wish-?”
Unsurprisingly, you had jolted at the sound of his voice and bolted from the opening of his door, leaving a baffled Nobunaga staring at your empty postion.
2 days later, you leave the completed painting on his desk, covered by a square of leftover fabric you had used to make the kimono you wore that day.
He unveils it curiously, only because you didn’t leave a note of any kind.
Honestly? He just kinda stares at it- curiously- since the painting seemed even more realistic than the ones circling at that time.
And he just laughs, leaving it hanging against the wall beside the Kimono you had made for him.
Mitsuhide:
Okay… So catching this one somewhere paintable is simply impossible. Believe yourself- You’ve tried.
In fact the only reason why you’re trying to paint Mitsuhide is: 1. You don’t have a camera, and 2, He’s just so ethereally beautiful and 3. He’s never lingered in somewhere pretty or ‘nice’ enough for a sufficient amount of time to even sketch him.
As for Mitsuhide, he, without a doubt, is teasing you. He’s seen the paint tubes you brought with you on that night you had first arrived in the Sengoku Era, and he’s seen that sketchbook- or rather paint-book- of yours, filled with random practice paintings of flowers you’ve spotted in the Azuchi gardens-
or Kyubei, which you had admittedly sketched multiple times. Why were both Lord and Vassal so pretty?
and has figured out their uses after stealing a blank page from your book and a couple of paint tubes.
You’ve found that same torn page tucked within the pile of paperwork when he requested your assistance once.
It was kinda cute too: fingerprints and finger painting galore xD
You’ve also spotted paint residues of blue beneath his fingernails, much to your amusement.
Anyway… So you’ve been trying to paint an image of Mitsuhide with a parasol beneath a willow tree for awhile now… And it’s to the point where you’re tempted to just use your imagination bc he’s simply not letting you.
But you just snap at him, one day, after having had a VERY bad day. And he just… relents, standing statue-still despite you still grumbling beneath your breath with every glance towards him.
You stuff Kyubae into the image too bc he deserves to be immortalised in a painting with his lord….
It takes a week, on top of all your other duties, to complete the painting, and if that’s not the best painting you’ve ever painted, you’d be lying to yourself.
Honestly, even though he’s curious and teasing about it, Mitsuhide only finds out once you’ve completed the painting. Yes, he could’ve seen the painting at any time, but a part of him wanted to keep that as a reward for all his hard work.
He makes that adorable blushy pout when he later realises he simply could’ve asked you to see the painting: Kyubei’s seen it before he has.
You leave the painting on his desk under all the paperwork there is, knowing full well that his curiousity would get the better of him and he’d stop working-
It works, but only at the expense of your blush from his tease when he finds you in the kitchen with Masamune, rewarding yourself with Mochi.
He’s secretly proud of it, and it’s the only one he’ll willingly hang in his room.
Ieyasu:
Ehhhh…. This one’s kinda easy, okay?
So you’ve always wanted to paint Ieyasu with Wasabi. It’s been on your agenda ever since you first caught him playing with the baby deer 3 nights after your arrival in Sengoku Japan.
The only thing is, you’ll have to resort to using Traditional watercolour techniques, since you: 1. Had no paints on you, and 2, canvases didn’t exist back then. You could try to make one, but you swore it wouldn’t turn out as good as the store-bought ones.
So you do paint it. From your memory, and from whatever scenery you could draw from the Azuchi garden.
It’s pretty funny, actually: You know most of the Azuchi warlords are aware of what you’re up to. And by that, you mean all but Ieyasu, who claimed he couldn’t care less, and Mitsunari, that oblivious genius.
Nobunaga and Mitsuhide knows because they’ve been watching you, and Masamune and Ranmaru only knows because Hideyoshi found out.
Long story short, you’ve been neglecting yourself: forgetting meals and overall becoming a Mitsunari 2.0…. Hence the whole “Hideyoshi” thing.
Honestly, it’s a surprise the receiver of the painting doesn’t know. Usually Ieyasu would be the type to scold you with harsh words before you even get to painting him.
But not this time.
Actually, you’re certain he’s been avoiding you. For what reason? Who knows. But painting from memory was always a good mental exercise….
Ieyasu does find out eventually, but that’s simply because you purposely drag him out to the garden where you’ve hung the painted scene on a branch to allow it to dry.
He just sort of stands there surprised, before averting his gaze.
“This is what you’ve been doing the entire time?”
You don’t blame him for the blunt question since you rushed off to the location at any given time to continue the painting, pretty much neglecting anything but your sleep, chores and-
Honestly, being that tsundere-contrarian he is, he flicks you on the forehead while muttering a quiet “It’s good” with averted eyes.
You honestly should never have grinned that widely at his words, bc now he’s walking off while blushing… and taking the painting with him :3
Kenshin:
You know better than to go behind Kenshin’s back. And by that, you mean “Oh-god-he’s-etherally-beautiful-but-also-a-yandere-so-I-must-gain-permission-to-paint-him-otherwise-he-might-kill-me-help”.
But honestly, it takes you awhile, simply because you’re not sure how to approach him- He’s always given you that sensation of “don’t-touch-me” xD
If it weren’t for Sasuke, who you had known for years, given you went to the same university and assisted him with some artist renditions of the night sky, you honestly would never have had the courage.
The question comes off as awkward. Very much so, since you had been, well, stalking him for days on end before he calls you out and you reply to him, nervously stuttering in response.
Kenshin doesn’t disagree with your request, however, choosing to just call for you whenever he suddenly feels bored.
It’s honestly chaotic and stressful, since he keeps changing position every few minutes…. ^-^’’
In the end you enlist the help of Shingen, who was only willing to pose for you so he could stare at your expression~ xD
The rest of the time you spend painting is holed up in your room, which, by the way, confuses Kenshin since usually artists would force him to sit agonising hours of stillness just to capture his appearance.
So he goes looking for you.
It’s at a pretty ironic time too, considering you were just adding the finishing touches to the painting. Just some background colouring and details….
But Kenshin’s hovering over your shoulder and-
He compliments you with some VERY sugary words, while you’re wrapped up in his arms. Honestly it puts Shingen’s flirting to shame xD
You’re warm, but to be fair you’ve left him pretty much unattended for the past week thanks to your want to paint.
Just cross your fingers he never asks you how exactly you managed to accurately paint the position he, in the painting, sat in.
Shingen would most certainly die from spending hours with Kenshin’s princess and love of his life-
