SANTOS SIETE FUNDADORES DE LA ORDEN DE LOS SIERVOS DE MARÍA, ENTRE LOS CUALES SAN ALESIO FALCONIERI

Llamados también septem viri o septem fratres, fueron los padres fundadores de la Orden de los Siervos de María: todos florentinos, vivieron en el siglo XIII. Ricos mercaderes, se retiraron a la vida contemplativa. Se conmemoran juntos el 17 de febrero, fecha de la muerte del más longevo de ellos.

Retiro de la ciudad

Siglo XIII, Florencia. Siete mercaderes, miembros de una compañía laica de fieles devotos de la Bienaventurada Virgen, (la “Compañía de los Siervos de Santa María” o “Laudesi”) deciden retirarse en penitencia, contemplación, y en el servicio a María. Una elección ciertamente influenciada por dos grandes órdenes mendicantes de la época, franciscanos y dominicos, así como por la experiencia de los monjes Camaldulenses, Valumbrosanos y Cluniacenses, ya presentes en esas tierras, y por grupos de penitencia, como los de San Agustín y del Monte Carmelo, o el de los hermanos y hermanas laicos de la Penitencia. Eran Bonfiglio, líder del grupo laico y prior de la futura comunidad, Bonagiunta, futuro prior entre 1256 y 1257, Manetto, artífice de las primeras fundaciones en Francia, Amadio, alma del grupo, Sostegno y Uguccione, amigos entre sí, y finalmente, Alessio.

En torno al 1233 los siete abandonan sus actividades comerciales, dejan sus propias casas y distribuyen los bienes a los pobres, mientras Florencia se estremece cada vez más por las guerras fratricidas.

Túnicas y capas grises

Es el 8 de septiembre de 1233 cuando los siete comienzan a hacer vida común en Villa Camarzia, en las afueras de la ciudad: Iacopo da Poggibonsi, capellán de Laudesi y director espiritual, les impone a cada uno el vestido de los “Hermanos de la Penitencia”, una capa y una túnica de lana rústica de color gris. La jornada de la pequeña comunidad se lleva a cabo entre la oración, el trabajo y la mendicidad en las calles de la ciudad. Su vida es retraída, austera y solitaria, pero muchas personas turbadas y angustiadas acuden a ellos, recibiendo siempre consuelo y consejo; sobre todo a la mayoría sorprende el hecho de que, como comerciantes ricos que eran, los siete se hubiesen reducido voluntariamente a la pobreza. Esto anima el difundirse de su fama de santidad y muchas personas comienzan a pedir formar parte de su familia.

Nacimiento de la orden

Precisamente las insistentes y numerosas solicitudes los llevan a comenzar una Orden expresamente dedicada a la Virgen, de la cual se dicen Servidores: la Orden de los Siervos de María. En 1234, el obispo Ardingo Foraboschi les dona un terreno en la cima del Monte Senario, a unos 18 km de Florencia. Las celdas son inicialmente simples chozas separadas entre sí; sobre las ruinas de un antiguo castillo, surge pronto una pequeña iglesia dedicada a la Virgen y en 1239, después de la visita del Legado Pontificio, el Cardenal Goffredo Castiglioni (futuro Papa Celestino IV) les asigna la Regla de San Agustín.

A menudo, tras largas salidas para la limosna, se detienen en Florencia en el oratorio de Santa María di Cafaggio, cuyo hospicio contiguo pronto expanden, comenzando a recibir a quienes les piden ser parte de la comunidad.

Tantas vocaciones

Pronto los siete reciben el permiso para abrir otros conventos, incluso fuera de Toscana, porque las vocaciones llegan numerosas. La Orden, sin embargo, corre el riesgo de ser abolida cuando el Consejo de Lyon, en 1247, decreta suprimir las Órdenes Mendicantes. Pero Filippo Benizi, acogido a los veintiún años en la orden y futuro prior general, nuevamente obtiene el reconocimiento pontificio. La aprobación definitiva llega en 1304 por obra de Benedetto XI.

Sólo Alessio Falconieri, el último superviviente de los siete, puede regocijarse. Morirá el 17 de febrero de 1310, a casi 110 años de edad. Su sobrina, Juliana Falconieri, también santa, será la fundadora de las religiosas y monjas de la Orden de los Servitas de María.

En 1888, León XIII canonizó juntos a los siete padres. En Monte Senario, un único sepulcro recoge sus restos. Entre los Servidos de los últimos años, recordamos al padre David María Turoldo, un conocido predicador y poeta.

ch’uscehah en’kin’at: “murderbaby,” a playlist for my Imperial Agent, Raz

her priorities are clear: a Raz/Shara mix, named from a line in one of the letters you get if you let Watcher X go, the letter that named my ship, the letter that makes me gladdest that Raz killed him, because he knows them both too well

mal’r: “liar,” for my lying liar who lies, Mahzarin, the Sith Warrior who isn’t even Force-sensitive

zudyti tu’iea isdavy: “kill your betrayer,” this is also a Mena playlist, but it’s more general/for her to cope with the Quinncident, and it’s named in Sith because I felt like having a playlist named “kill your betrayer” might be a good way to get me added to some kind of a list (still a work in progress)

tear the galaxy apart: the first swtor playlist I ever made, for bisexual queen of our hearts Lana Beniko, named from the letter she sends the Commander when they go missing on the Worst Field Trip Ever with Valkorion; attempts to tell a story spanning approximately the time between meeting Lana in Forged Alliances to Nathema Round 2 in Fractured Alliances.

tapti’ nedary: “come undone,” my first playlist for someone else, made for @rainofaugustsith’s Viri and Lana. Reading Viri/Lana content makes me feel like a homewrecker for shipping any of my own toons with Lana, and this is my way of making up for it. (I’m disappointed I didn’t make it longer or organize it into a better “story” order, but I’m pretty satisfied with the overall mood)

viridana: (if you thought “idiot avocado” was my least creatively named playlist, congratulations, you were wrong) Rain’s Viri is awesome and inspiring, a fierce warrior and an even fiercer friend. Rain always appreciates my character playlists, so I wanted to pay it back by trying to capture Viri in playlist form (even if it is hard to nail down genres for Viri).

^ When two siths failed to seducing a cute avocado, they just sit down for having a discussion and playing at dejarik. That seems exasperating Lana doesn’t it? But they where both so sad. Even if they love each other! :p

^ Another Luhcy & Jia’s hang out together, admiring the beautiful view on Corruscant. Theron get sad after the whole mission on the Order of Zildrog Luhcy’s heart choose someone else. He was so done. Poor spyboy.

^ Luhcy actually try to do things with technology. “Don’t worry, I ttotally master the situation”. Do I have evermention that Luhcy’s skill on technology is the same that a nexu baby of 3 days old? It’s done now. Viri doesn’t seems very convincing.

i'm technically in hs still,,, like i don't have my diploma yet, but i'm only taking college classes and have been since last year, and i'm going in to whatever college i accept as a sophomore, and it definitely is harder to wake up??? like i used to wake up at 6 everyday and now i'm happy to wake up at 10

my current xiao... ahaha.. he's 70/190 crit rate/dmg, c1, and triple crowned. i go all out for my boy <3 so i'm just working on the new artifact set for him slowly but surely to boost his dmg big time (i will be losing the viri 2 piece +15% anemo dmg bonus but i think the atk boost is better? i need to look at calculations probably)

your friend group and cat's friend group are 🤌🤌🤌 how you all so mf talented (and i'm glad you have friends you knew before tumblr on here!!! that must be so fun)

i think i will write in any order that strikes me w inspiration 😭😭😭taeyong's has 3k already, and i've figured out all the pairings and tropes, so i just need summaries to post, but i have 2 series on a side blog i run and a collab due date coming up so it might have to wait a bit 😭

i think the titles i came up w are pretty fun, so i just hope i can deliver PLSSSS i'm feeling very . meh. about my longer fics recently bc my reactions get way more love

OHHH i see :o are those community college classes then ?? i remember taking those in high school :’)) but good luck on college application season !! it’s definitely so stressful at first but all the small victories add up 🥰💖 and omfg same i could wake up at 6-7 during my high school days without too many complaints and now i sleep in until like 11-12 sometimes 🤧 well tbh i wake up earlier but just stay in bed bc i’m lazy LOL

i agree cat, moon, and lana are so so talented !!! 💕💕 and yes i met fia, addy, and char around 2018-2019?? :o we’re part of a bigger friend group actually and we all talk on discord but we met on wattpad LOL and fia joined tumblr early 2020 i believe and then introduced the rest of us to writing fics on tumblr 😵‍💫

Writer’s Round-Up, 2020

This is definitely pretty late for some of you (possibly already after midnight for a couple, lol.) But I just saw that I was tagged by @kunstpause, thanks!

I’m not sure anything about this year went the way I expected it to, lol, though I’m also certain I’m sharing that boat with a huge number of people.

But I’ve been able to get myself back into writing as at least one part of my health improved. Still not writing as much or as easily as I was four years ago, but certainly a lot more than last year.

I’m going to tag @curiousartemis, @cinlat, @sleepswithvillains, @semper-draca, @riajade01, and @actualanxiousswampwitch (only if you want, of course, and haven’t already done it, lol. And there’s no reason this can’t be done on New Year’s Day if you miss tonight, lol)

This year’s published writing:

Dance in the Shadow of Honor. Most of my energy went into my retelling of the SW romance with Quinn, with lots of intrigue (new twist coming up in the next chapter in fact, lol.) I think I published about 11 chapters this year (there were a couple of dry spells, no surprise there.) But I have chapter 50 finished and being edited right now (which for me is unheard of because I only published chapter 49 last Saturday, lol.) And I have most of chapter 51 drafted (plus most of what I think will be chapter 52.)

Related to that, I published

“The Last Kiss” which became part of chapter 40 of Dance, and was a flashback to a particularly painful choice for Ucevi.

A (sort of) fake date prequel to Dance for Joran and Ucevi that doesn’t have a name because I haven’t edited it for AO3 yet. I actually sat on a partial draft of this story (a prompt response) for almost 2 years, I think.

Part of a future chapter of Dance in response to “I can’t keep kissing strangers and pretending that they’re you” a bit more of the slow burn angst, lol.

Part of the Chapter 50 was already published in response to the prompt, Slow Dancing. Ucevi’s first dance lesson.

@cinlat and I collaborated on a short story set in an AU where neither her trooper Fynta nor Ucevi become the Commander. “Rules of Engagement” is a comedy of them bonding over a bar brawl and RSD-13′s “tender” care.

Unrelated to Ucevi, I edited and published an older story of ‘Noka and Lana Beniko as “A King’s Ransom” finally.

And my very first attempt at a collaborative story with @sleepswithvillains, about a miscommunication and a first kiss between her Fiona Quinn from Helplessly Hoping and my Darth Imperius, Zastelar, from Dance, called “The Invitation.”

New Things I tried this year:

Collaborations. I really enjoyed writing The Invitation with @sleepswithvillains and Rules of Engagement with @cinlat. The Invitation felt a little risky (in a good way) because both of the characters are fairly minor NPCs in our respective works, but people seemed to like it. I’ve also been quietly experimenting a little bit with my writing style, though nothing as different as Patience and Silence were.

Fic I spent the most time on:

Dance in the Shadow of Honor. I’d hoped to get to 100K words at least, but I fell a little short with the last chapter and I don’t want to rush chapter 50.

Fic I spent the least time on:

Oh, that’s a tough one. If I had to guess, I’d say it was “The Last Kiss.”

Favorite things I wrote:

Another tough one, but I’ll go with “I can’t keep kissing strangers.”

Favorite things I read:

Oh man, I have a dozen favorites in progress right now, lol. But of the stories currently updating, I’d have to say that it was a tie between Iustitia by @semper-draca and Helplessly Hoping by @sleepswithvillains, two very different interpretations of Sith Warrior/Quinn, lol.

(but I’d definitely drop everything for any updates to @riajade01‘s Reduced to Ash, @cinlat‘s Blood in the Breeze, and @inyri‘s Equivalent Exchange. And I have some other favorites that I just didn’t get back to reading this year for 2020 reasons, like @rainofaugustsith‘s Viri/Lana stories which I adore.)

Writing goals for next year:

Have fun.

That’s it. I’d like to get Dance through at least the finale of Act 2, but that’s optimistic and I’m not going to set it as a goal because I’ll end up feeling guilty and writing even less. I’ve got the beginnings of a companion piece about the JK in Ucevi’s universe that I’m dabbling with. And I’d like to write another collaborative piece or two, maybe.

2020 In Review: Wordcount Tag

I was tagged for this by @actualanxiousswampwitch , thank you! I’m not sure who’s already done or been tagged for this cause I am, once again, late to the party LOL but I shall (no pressure and sorry if you’ve already done it!) tag: @rainofaugustsith , @darth-bagel , @thatmmolesbian , @thelastenvoyyy and anybody else who wants to do this. Yes, I promise I mean you!

Published: 0 (I’m not counting the couple of Six Sentence tags I’ve gotten, they’re snippets of an unfinished piece & are included below instead :), or roleplay replies, cause that feels like cheating lol.) I actually wrote a lot more than I thought I had, this is a rough guesstimate as well, as my oneshot WIPs tend to be all over the place across something like 6 different documents, some of which have existed since 2018, so I had to guess at how far up to count from the end for some of them, but I think it’s a fair guesstimate XD I also have included lore/worldbuilding docs in this because that was a 3-month long Lockdown 1.0 Boredom/”Canon is a trash fire so I’m ignoring that and making up my own lore” passion project and I’m goddamn proud of how much I wrote for that. It’s the most I’ve written in one stretch (think I finished it over a span of 3 nights or so, once I’d done all the research and made all the notes ofc ^^)

for creeping shadows (my main longfic/part one of the subterfugeverse series) - 1,553 - Aria, stop being difficult! *shakes fists* XD

lore/worldbuilding (for subterfugeverse naturally) - 23,001 (is this ALL tomato alien lore? pretty much, yes, yes it is :’D ~400 words is “the WIP reworked timeline to correlate my worldbuilding with the canon timeline that was released”, but 98% is just...me thinking way too much about Purebloods and how they deserved way better goddamn lore. I blame @fluffynexu ‘s amazing tomato worldbuilding posts, reading them when I went looking for “canon” lore one day for the rp is what got me started down that rabbithole (it’s awesome and if you haven’t already you should totally go check hers out too :DD), I had a “fuck you then canon I’ll do it myself too >:L” moment and once I started I couldn’t stop until I’d crapped out literally over 20k words on the subject *whispering* thank you LOL)

zephyrverse au bonus oneshots - 4,537 (stuff I wrote to fill in time gaps or “just cause I had a plot bunny”, relating to mine and k-christine’s zephyrverse au rp. None of these will likely be posted publicly, but they still deserve to be counted as words I wrote this year :’D

As you can see, most of my “muse” this year came from sporadic oneshots :’D The Ahaszaai twins also properly plot-bunnied their way into my brain in late 2019 and haven’t stopped making a nuisance of themselves the whole fucking year. Every time I tried to carry on with a chapter, one of the two of them would pop up like “Nooo write about ME! pay attention to ME!” - Yes, Ni’kasi, I will get to you this year, I promise XD

New Things I Tried:

Just Writing. Not worrying about whether “it wasn’t part of the next chapter” or “it comes from a part in the story that I’m nowhere near close to posting yet”. If I felt like writing something, or for a specific pairing/feeling/scene, whatever. I wrote until I ran outta muse juice. Yeah, it meant I didn’t technically “finish” anything this year BUT - the important thing is I wrote stuff. and that’s all that really matters, eh? :’D

Polyam ships! May not seem like a big deal but I spent a long time talking myself out of them because of internalised toxic monogamy and finally saying “you know what, fuck it! I can ship three or more people together and it can still be a perfectly wholesome, healthy and loving relationship and that’s okay” was a BIG thing for me this year.

Dialogue Scripts: which I didn’t count as wordcount because really it’s just word vomit of general tone/inflection and dialogue that I came up with right before falling asleep which I didn’t want to lose. Basically, if an exchange or a particularly punchy or moving line of dialogue popped into my brain but I wasn’t ready to write the whole scene that it fit into out, but didn’t want to forget the line(s). I wrote it out in movie script/script-style roleplay fashion e.g. Character’s Name: (emotion, hand gestures etc.) [Dialogue here] and so on. I know this is probably a well known trick of the trade, but I never took it seriously until this year. Seriously, do it. It’s great.

Favorite Thing I Wrote:

Hmmm, a snippet for Andronikos/Ni’kasi that I started this week which isn’t posted yet (saving it for this week’s Six Sentence Sunday so look out for it! :D) was pretty fun to work on, I love their dynamic and Kas is suprisingly fun to write for.

Also the Aria/Vano proposal scene that I posted a snippet for the week before last. I’m having great fun with that scene, and I really enjoy putting a non-serious spin on the classic “proposal scene” tropes. Can’t wait to finish it, though it may be a while before the full one goes up on AO3, as it depends whether it ends up fitting in as part of the mainfic or as an additional oneshot

And I have a D’leah/Kissai oneshot that I need to give another once-over before I finally yeet it onto AO3 and Tumblr for you guys to see :’D

Favorite Fic I Read:

@sleepswithvillains Eleanora/Quinn fic, Helplessly Hoping. I’m horribly behind on chapters and I gotta catch up and read the finale this week, but it’s been a helluva great ride and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the story! <3

Also The Invitation collab with @tishinada featuring Zas and Fiona had me squealing, I can’t wait to catch up on HH and see more of these two, they’re adorable ;-; @a-muirehen ‘s Relu/Merkara series of course! I’m a complete sucker for (friends to lovers to in Ariano’s case but yea pfpfpf) enemies to lovers ships and these two are just so good, I am on the edge of my seat every time we get a new snippet for them, ngl (grimace emoji) @darth-bagel ‘s Sylvas/Graz’zt and Sylvas/Liz/Rilfaen snippets which they’ve been spoiling me with on Discord @mercurypilgrim ‘s Ven’fir/Quinn AU oneshots, Cloudbank (Western was a particular favourite, but all are very good!) and of course @rainofaugustsith ‘s Lana/Viri updates are always fantastic, some personal favourites from this year were Almost There & Memory of Healing :3 (I totally still go back to read Commander & Advisor too sometimes, getting to see Viri be a little diabolical and messing with “MiNiSTeR LoRMaN!” was and still is my favourite thing XD)

If I’ve left you out I’m sorry!! These were the ones that stuck out in my memory, but I’ve loved everyone’s writing this year, it’s been great :3

Writing Goals:

to actually finish and post chapter 8 & 9 of Creeping Shadows. Then we’ll get to the meat and potatoes of the story and maybe Aria will stop being a brat and fighting me every time I try to stick to a semi-regular update schedule Get off my butt, finalise the name and get started on Ni’kasi’s part of the Subterfugeverse story. Maybe run the updates in-tandem with Creeping Shadows but idk if I want to wait till after CS is done before I start posting Kas’s side, or do them side-by-side yet, we’ll see ;) Keep writing! I know better than to pressure myself by setting a specific word count goal, that’s never worked well in the past

At least 2 chapters of each of the works mentioned above would be great though, more would be better! We’ll see how I go

honestly, to everybody in the fandom I’ve met this year. Anybody that I follow, thank you for being there and engaging with me and/or posting amazing content for me to look at! I came over from deviantART where the SWTOR fandom is incredibly small and generally quite inactive and the contrast since moving over here has been incredibly uplifting. I very nearly cancelled Creeping Shadows and stopped posting fic for my SWTORverse altogether because I got next to no engagement on dA and it was very disheartening to the point where I felt I could enjoy the game and the rp partners I had, but the solo projects I’d put so much thought, time and love into already weren’t worth continuing. You guys took that spark and kept it going and I really don’t have enough words to say how grateful I am for that. Even if I haven’t published much this year, making posts on this tumblr, interacting with everyone and working on lore, plot points and so on for Subterfugeverse has kept me going through the Hellish Year of Nightmares that was 2020 <3

T or Y with Rory and Arcade?

already did Y and I now have 2 requests for T (an obscure AU) so here goes. idk how Obscure~ this is but like gimme a break i’m old and confused ok? thanks xD

“Let’s try again. Pecunia et gloria animum viri boni superabant. If you just pick out the words you can identify, we can work from there.”

Arcade Gannon had been tutoring a woman in his class, Rory Wood, for nearly two hours, for what seemed like the thousandth such session. Though both seniors in college, Rory was still on first-semester Latin, whereas Arcade had already finished up his Classics capstone. He just needed a few more tutoring hours to finish up his graduation requirements--but Rory needed to pass the class, period.

The two of them had seldom crossed paths before she’d started attending his tutoring sessions. It was a small campus, but their majors were on opposite sides of it, and their social circles rarely intersected. Despite their differences, they were on good terms--even though Rory hated Latin.

“Dude, you’re wasting your time,” she rolled her eyes, tearing a sheet from her notebook and crumpling it in her hands before throwing it against the wall. “I’m on track for a D in this class at best. I appreciate your time and everything, but--”

“Let me put it this way,” he cut her off, “I still need service credit to graduate. You’re in danger of failing Latin. I have to be here anyway, so we might as well say we tried.”

“Or,” she suggested, “and hear me out, we could fuck off to the student center and get some cheesy bread and play Pac-Man, and I’d tell Dr. Rabalais you tried your best with me.”

“I think he’d figure out you were full of it when he saw your score on the midterm,” Arcade replied dryly. “Page 48--”

“Hey, not your fault I’m hopeless, is it?”

“You’re not hopeless,” he disagreed, “But, uh, why are you taking Latin, anyway? You don’t seem to enjoy it, and it’s not required for anything but Classics majors.”

Rory sighed. “It’s whatever. There was this cute girl...I thought she’d think I was...smart, I dunno. It doesn’t matter. I’m in it now, and past the drop period. I’m pretty good at accepting my fate, though! Which is why I’m just saying, I’ll buy the cheesy bread if you--”

“Forget it,” Arcade cut her off. “Pecunia et gloria--”

“Sounds like the sisters from Hocus Pocus.”

“What? No. That’s--that’s Winnifred, Mary--nevermind. Okay, you know what? I’ll even give you a hint. One of those words has an English cognate. Can you tell me which one?”

Rory drummed her fingers on the desk. “Uh. Pecunia?”

“You had a 50-50 shot there,” he sighed, “It’s gloria.”

“Oh. So, like, Glory.”

“Great! Wonderful,” Arcade nodded with vigorous encouragement. “Okay, so, what and glory?”

“Um...” Rory looked as anxious as she did lost. “I don’t--I don’t really--”

All of a sudden, Arcade’s face lit up with a brilliant idea. “Hang on a second. You like Lana del Rey, right?”

“Oh, yeah, definitely,” Rory nodded, “but I’m pretty sure she doesn’t speak Latin.”

"Nevermind. There’s a song of hers--what...and glory?”

“Oh--wait, money? Or power?”

“Money!” cried Arcade with relief. “You’ve got the first bit of the sentence.”

“Oh, shit, really?” Rory’s voice rose with surprise and excitement, “Okay, cool! Now what?”

“Money and glory...and, what are they doing? Or rather, what did they do? I’m giving you a hint, there.”

Rory fell silent as she pondered the question. Before Arcade could push her any further, though, he was surprised to see her eyes filling with tears.

“Um--” he began, “--are you--are you o--”

“I’m fine,” she snapped as she removed her glasses, frantically wiping her eyes, “I’m just fine. Don’t worry about it. Uh. Can you just--can you tell me which word is the verb, here?” Her voice rose in pitch and speed as she tried to stabilize its shaking.

Arcade closed the Latin textbook and took out his cell phone instead, flipping through a few pages before finding the one he was looking for.

“Hey,” he said gently to his friend, “did you see the meme someone made of Dr. Rabalais on the Class of 2016 page yet?”

Rory laughed through a sniffle. “Yeah,” she replied, “It was me.”

Arcade squinted at the page. “Oh, shit, it was you. My bad,” he laughed.

Neither of them spoke for a few minutes, both of them silently scrolling their cell phones as Rory regained her composure.

Finally, she broke the silence. “I’m not actually stupid, you know,” she said quietly.

“I know that!” Arcade insisted, and he meant it. Latin was a difficult class that he knew his new friend had taken on a whim, and she was certainly not the first person he’d tutored to be driven to tears by the ancient tongue. For whatever reason, Arcade himself had a gift for it--but for most, it did not come so naturally.

“Look, you’re not the first Latin student I’ve had who ended up crying. I try to tell myself it’s not me, it’s Cato...but, nevermind. This is literally all you need to graduate, right? You’ve gotten all your other requirements out of the way?”

“Yep,” Rory confirmed, “Exactly. And the last credit I need to walk the stage is the hardest class I’ve ever taken in my life. Serves me right, I guess, for chasing girls.”

“If I said I’d never made a questionable decision to impress some guy, I’d be a liar,” Arcade sighed. “But, no. You’re not stupid.” After a moment’s pause, he added, “Could you just be hungry, though? I know I’m not at my top Latin translation efficiency when I’m seeing stars from lack of nutrients. Weirdly, though, it seems to help with Greek.”

Rory checked the time on her phone and immediately rose to her feet. “Come on. Student Center closes in 15 minutes. If we hustle, we can still get the cheesy bread.”

“Compromise,” Arcade suggested as he packed his laptop into his bag, “Yes, cheesy bread, then finish the homework on the couches under that hideous Chihuly sculpture?”

“Deal,” she laughed, “Make sure you have your OneCard. I’m not responsible for you getting locked in or out.”

NB: Based heavily on my own experiences taking Latin on a whim to impress a crush, regretting it nearly instantly, and some sights and foods from my alma mater. (Hey! That’s also Latin!) I ended up meeting one of my absolute dearest to-this-day friends because she tutored me in Latin, and yes, food helped the inevitable tears during such sessions!

I didn’t fare much better than Rory in Latin, ultimately switching my Classics major to a minor, but at least I got my suffering out of the way freshman year. :)
