40 Day Anime Challenge 2023 Edition - Day 31: Saddest anime moment

THIS FUCKING SCENE/ENTIRE EPISODE (Clannad: After Story)

MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW CUT:

Okay, LOOK. Obviously, there are the obvious choices from the Clannad series:

Nagisa's death

Ushio's death

the Fuko arc

Kotomi's breakdown

etc etc

But like.... episode 18 of After Story is on a whole other level.

Long story short: Nagisa, Tomoya's wife, died giving birth to Ushio. The grief was so overwhelming, Tomoya was incapable of taking care of their daughter, leaving her to Akio and Sanae, Nagisa's parents. Tomoya spends the next five years in a funk; he lives and works like a zombie, becomes a severely depressed alcoholic, not suicidal, so much as not caring about what happens to him....

But sneaky Sanae (bless that woman, she's the real MVP 💕) tricks Tomoya into taking his daughter on an outing for the first time, and so, Tomoya experiences being a dad at long last. Not only that, but he reunites with his grandfather and learns his father's whole story, which is heartbreakingly similar to his own.

Tomoya then levels with Ushio and promises to be a good father from then on. It's a beautiful, bittersweet scene in general, but the kicker is this: Ushio reveals that she was taught to only cry in the bathroom or.... in HER DADDY'S ARMS 😭😭😭😭😭

AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF, after that emotional gutpunch of a scene, Tomoya finally opens up about Nagisa to their daughter, and ends up ACTUALLY FINALLY GRIEVING HER DEATH OMFGGGGGG

tl;dr: there's a reason why Clannad is considered one of the best tear-jerking anime of all time. It doesn't matter how many times I rewatch it; I will STILL cry. every. single. time.

who would the minions serve in the ensemble stars universe

the ensemble stars x minions analysis that nobody asked for, under the cut

okay so minions want to serve the most powerful (and evil) guy in the area/time they're in

if they enrolled at yumenosaki prior to the ! era they'd have been looking for a master and might've even worked under shu/valkyrie, who was the top unit at that time

"Imagining shu leading the fucking minions is horrifying"

[shu voice] come, my brethren, and let us engage in performance arts

nazuna and mika are very confused

actually mika would like them i think

but when the first revolution/war began, the minions would've caught sight of exfine and eichi

as exfine rose through the ranks and defeated the eccentrics eichi became immensely famous, and i think at least a third of the minions would serve him just because of this

eichi is easily entertained by them

they piss off keito

hiyori is very biased and can tell each minion apart

he names them things like Flowery One and Revolting One

nagisa does not understand what a minion is

tsumugi can fucking communicate in minionese

that's part of the reason natsume hates him so much. he can understand them and talk to them and it's horrifying

if the minions were to see eichi's actual plans on the surface level, that would be enough for them to see as evil

there's also the possibility that some minions might see eichi as "good" and exfine as heroes so they'd turn to serve the eccentrics instead

the minions don't harass rei because he scares them

they think he'd eat them

natsume does not like these little freaks

kanata has fun with them because i'm pretty sure they can't drown

if they can. well rip

chiaki hypes them up :)

but as far as i've seen in the minions franchise they prefer more powerful figures, and the eccentrics at that time were ostracized

and during the ! era trickstar revolution, eichi is definitely more of a villain character so the minions would attempt to help him

and then accidentally screw him over

wataru would love the minions

they're like tomoyas and little watarus to him

tori would absolutely hate them

he punts one when eichi isn't looking

yuzuru is indifferent but he likes having some help

trickstar is Very Conflicted

subaru and the minions would love each other

hokuto despises everything that they stand for

mao is like. huh. ok.

makoto "eek!"s at the sight of one

in !! era, eichi is less of a hero/villain/morally grey guy and just A Girl . at this point the remaining minions under him would either stay or find a new master, possibly gatekeeper

the minions piss him off very effectively

after kohaku beats up gatekeeper or whatever they start to follow him instead

"i imagine [kohaku] showing rinne and rinne shakes one to death or something"

niki would absolutely wonder what they taste like

himeru talks to the minions

"himeru is confused" "bwahaha!! barosoeflksernuina" "himeru does not like you very much"

yknow how ibara has mouse drones and mayoi keeps destroying them. yeah. that with the minions

ibara's upset that his spies are disappearing and he barges into mayoi's house and there's just a giant nest of minions

after meeting a minion midori's attempted murder count rises from 2 to 25

leo says he "feels inspired" by the minions and then composes the most shit song known to man

author's note — i think this is the first time where i write for everybody at once (labeled scenarios) so im gonna be working with characters i haven't yet. but MMMM YES ANGST

Realizes his mistake as soon as he calms down. He's vulnerable during the heat of the moment, and because of that weakness he hurts you. He cares for you, he really does, so immediately he goes to you and apologizes and admits that he was in the wrong. So please accept it, because the poor man keeps breaking his heart over your tear-stricken face. Definitely will need some hugs and cuddles and needs you reassuring him that you still love the man.

Knows what he did was wrong but won't fess up. He has a reputation to protect, even if it means that he has to work with the growing guilt on his shoulders. Because of that he brings down everybody else around him, and you are sent to settle things with him. As soon as you talk to him the dam breaks, and he's on his knees, apologizing for the pain that he has caused you. When in reality, it scared him more...

Ibara Saegusa, Tsukasa Suou, Eichi Tenoushin, Izumi Sena, Shu Itsuki, HiMERU

Acts like nothing went wrong. It's a sort of coping mechanism for him; he just plays it off like nothing happened (this is after you were the one to apologize). But deep down he still regrets what he did to you, and that little part is pushing him to relent and confess. It's going to take quite a while for him to actually say something about it, but for now he won't be worrying about it. For now.

Rinne Amagi, Tori Himemiya, Kohaku Oukawa, Wataru Hibiki, Hinata Aoi

Beats himself up for it. Like the first scenario they know what they did immediately after, but now they're so guilty about it they won't go to you. Believes that it was your breaking point, you don't want him anymore. Won't rest easy unless you go to him and reassure him that you're alright now. He's going to be more careful around you from now on, but will definitely be a bit more clingy.

Ritsu Sakuma, Souma Kanzaki, Yuzuru Fushimi, Keito Hasumi, Makoto Yuuki, Niki Shiina, Tomoya Mashiro, Mika Kagehira, Nazuna Nito, Midori Takamine

Doesn't trust himself around you. The fear in your eyes when he yelled at you will haunt him forevermore. He never, ever wants you to be like that again, so he believes it's best for him to stop talking to you altogether. Of course you try to confront him, and slowly but surely you'll build up his confidence that you truly love him, which you do.

Will apologize to you indirectly. Whether they just don't feel right conveying their sorrys verbally or he thinks that expressing their love through actions, it's obvious that they're trying. So you accept it wholeheartedly... everybody has their strengths and weaknesses after all.

First of all new dorms list:

Now I'll try to explain what even the hell happened,,,

(putting under cut because its gonna be LONG)

It all started with laly wondering if enstars fandom would exist in enstars world. I was like "yeah kinda like with k-pop" and we started thinking about who in es would write/read fics of what. Doesn't affect the dorms change just yet but i need to share these hcs:

- Kohaku knows everything about ships (because Aira dragged him in the enstars fandom hellhole) and once accidentally sent HiMERU a HiMERU x Tatsumi fanart instead of a document for work

- Mika reads ALL the Shumika fics

- Aira anonymously writes Hiiro/Kohaku x Reader fics except the reader is actually him because he doesn't have the guts to write actual KoHiiAi. Kohaku once recognize Aira writing style in a fic and ask him about it and Aira is immediately like "noooOOOO I DON'T SEE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AT ALL"

- Leo hears about Izuleo at one point so he decides to check it out and read fics. And he creates himself an account to write Izuleo fics (that are more like poems-musical writing or something). And now he's trying his best to keep Izumi away from fics because he WILL recognize Leo's style. But the rest of knights ends up learning about Leo's fics and now they use it to blackmail him

- Aira also write Tatsumayo btw

- And now the hc that provokes the dorm changes...Aira also wrote like 3 Rei x Eichi enemies to lovers fics. Rei found it and he knows it has to be Aira because the situations described are way too accurate so it has to be their roommate

Aira: I don't feel safe in my dorm anymore...

Anzu: Why?

Rei, who read entirely the Rei x Eichi smut Aira wrote: ......

Rei spent a week just staring menacingly at him

Koga finds the fic and suddenly everyone in ES has read it (they dont know its Aira who wrote it though)

So Aira, fearing for his life, decides to switch dorms. He first ends up in Hiiro's, with Hinata and Niki

Meanwhile Rei and Eichi are left alone

They stare awkwardly at each other for two days then try to murder each other in their sleep

Eichi ends up paying ES to be in Wataru's dorm (and Rei to not be in Ritsu's)

Mama get kicked out of Wataru's dorm because 5 people is too much, so Leo ends up taking him in his dorm

Suddenly Tori (and Yuzuru) kicked out Subaru and Sora from Wataei's dorm. Now all of fine shares a dorm

Since everyone are changing dorms and its hell and ES doesnt know what to do anymore Hiyori takes action and switches to Jun's (and Kohaku's) dorm. Kohaku, refusing to third-wheel them, joins Hiiai in their dorm, but before he can Tsukasa kidnaps him a second time so he goes to autistic dorm instead

Hiyori starts trying to pay ES so Eichi isn't in Wataru's dorm. But Eichi pay ES too. ES will never have financial problems again

Anyway so yeah at this point ES gives up on keeping order in the dorms and now everyone can go sleep wherever the fuck they want

So HiMERU break in Tatsumi's dorm to kill him scare him

Now Tatsumi decided he was safer in Mayoi's dorm

Koga: Great I have a dorm all for myself and Leon now!

Rei: *enters chat*

Koga: DARN IT

(Rei and Koga shares a dorm now)

One day, Midori look at Kaoru and Yuta, visibly fucking exhausted from this situation

(Midori got kicked out of Ibara's dorm by Nagisa)

Izumi regularly tries to get in Makoto's dorm

Ritsu use this occasion to take his place in Mao's dorm

(Mao: Wait but this is Izumi's bed-

Ritsu: Nope. Not anymore. It's mine now. I live here now.

Pov: Ritsu actually doesn't even use Izumi's bed he sleeps with Mao)

But Makoto won't let Izumi in (and he got Chiaki and Adonis to protect him) so now he's homeless

Izumi: *homeless*

Leo: Hi

Izumi: Nope

Leo: *stay there*

Izumi, who just tried to get in any dorm without success because of his kidnapper reputation: Hey Leo can i stay at your dorm a little

Natsume takes his chance and goes to Sora's and Subaru's dorm

Shu stare at Mao and Ritsu sleeping together, stare at Kuro, and goes: Let's get in Mika's dorm already

Mika is happiest man alive

Kuro: Damn now I'm left alone to third wheel these two *looks at Keito*

Kuro joins Keito's dorm

Souma propose they switch room so Akatsuki is complete and Hokuto just doesn't give a shit about it so he accept (Hokuto just doesn't care anymore at this point)

Mayoi took Shinobu in his room

Tatsumi isn't sure how much Shinobu agreed to come but now he's here he seem okay with it

Hajime is now chilling with Akatsuki, while Tomoya decides to ignore the chaos as there's suddenly two more people in the dorm he shares with Mayoi

Kanata goes in Chiaki's dorm and Rinne's like "now i'm alone :/"

Suddenly Hinata get kicked out and forcefully thrown in his brother's dorm (Rinne be like: Brother + Bf + Gf of brother? Yeah that's my dorm)

Aira convinces Hiiro to take one of the new empty dorms because he SWEARS to god if he's called "Hiiro's little gf" ONE MORE FUCKING TIME-

So now Rinniki are left alone

Rinne is happy

Niki is not (begged Aira to not leave him alone with that man)

Now Niki begs HiMERU to move in their dorm but each time he's straight up "No."

Also Kohaku cutely moves to Hiiai dorm so the poly babies are complete. Except Tsukasa follows him. Oh well

Niki runs aways from Rinne and joins Hokuto

But Rinne joins them anyway afterwards

Niki: At least I'm not alone anymore

Hokuto: *dead inside at this point*

Hokuto decide to go in a room ALL ALONE and to pay ES so he has peace. Now only Trickstar is allowed to come in his dorm but they don't stay Hokuto force them to get out

And. That's it. This is very messy and probably complicated to understand so all you need to know is congrats to gender dorm for being the only og dorm surviving! You're too perfect to be changed

Mayoi had shut himself in one of the many hidden passageways inside the ES practice area. He was hoping the cold, dusty, narrow tunnel would calm his nerves before he spiraled again. He felt the rough stone on his back through his shirt when he leaned against the wall. He focused on the feeling, sliding down slowly so he could feel as it scratched along his back. His shirt dulled the feeling but that was fine, he didn't want anyone to worry if they accidentally saw the marks, the less noticeable the better.

The stone floor met him earlier than he liked. Once he was fully sitting down he curled himself up, holding his arms around his legs as he hid his face. He didn't like thinking these things, the fact Alkaloid would do so much better without him, or that he didn't deserve Nagisa, Nagisa should be someone better, like Hiyori or Ibara. A rational part of his mind knew the thoughts weren't real, they were some fabricated lie his anxiety made up, yet the thoughts constantly nagged at him. It was easier to fall into them than try to overcome it.

Which is what he always did, it was easier to accept they were only worries he, himself had when Alkaloid reassured him or Nagisa would hold him close, fingers brushing lightly through his hair as he whispered "I love yous" to him. But Mayoi didn't have any of that, he had left Alkaloid to have fun in an activity, faking an illness to get out of it. Nagisa wouldn't be done with practice for another four hours and he didn't know if he even wanted him to see him like this. Tears streaking his face and lips all puffy and bitten, Nagisa would finally know he was just a disgusting but and Mayoi didn't know if he was just ready for that yet. So he'd choose to wallow in his own self pity for however long be chose, sneaking back into his dorm later where Tomoya would hopefully leave him alone.

"Great job. I think it's time for a break, around 15 minutes, then straight back to practice." Ibara's voice rings loudly throughout the room as he stops the music. Nagisa stands where he was practicing, breathing slightly erratic, this practice had been a relatively difficult one. Ibara had pushed them to their limits, and even he himself seemed to know he had went a little too far.

Nagisa looks around the practice room, his unitmates all seem to be struggling somewhat, Ibara had left to get his water bottle and was sitting on the floor. Hiyori and Jun were together, Jun sitting on the floor with his own water bottle and Hiyori above him, panting with his hands on his knees. Nagisa seemed the least bit affected out of all of them. He also had a weird feeling, like something was wrong yet he couldn't possibly know what. He feels as if he could get out of the practice room and walk through the building he could figure it out, however he only had 15 minutes and Ibara was sure to get pissed if he missed practice. Mulling it over in his mind as he slowly makes his way to the door, deciding he could make it back in time unless a pressing matter came up, which he could explain later to his unit if it came to it.

As he made his way out of the room he could tell Ibara was watching him, most likely wondering where he was going but figuring it was to the bathroom so he didn't question him. Standing outside the practice room Nagisa feels an overwhelming urge to turn to the left, and follow down the hallway. As he walks he thinks over the feeling some more, it acts as if it knows where to go, leading him through certain hallways. However he comes to the conclusion it must just be him getting antsy from all the practice and his body wanting to escape the stuffy room for a few moments.

Nagisa ends up in some deserted area of the building, it doesn't look as clean or furnished as the other areas but it's not particularly dirty, just abandoned looking. He stands there, confused, wondering why his body would have brought him here. He stands there contemplating for a few moments, about to head back to the practice room and apologize to his group for being late when a sort of choked cry reaches his ears. Nagisa pauses, at first he thinks he must have thought it up since he misses Ayase, but when another one sounds out he knows for certain Ayase must be somewhere around here, probably in a hidden passage he heard him talk about sometimes.

Mayoi doesn't quite know how long he's been sitting in this passge, the freezing chill having finally settled into his bones. It must have been a while. He still isn't ready to leave the tunnel, weak and pathetic he tells himself, idiotic. Staying down here Mayoi would just gain a sickness, causing more trouble for his group than he already is, not to mention Ibara would probably keep Nagisa from coming to visit him out of fear for his own health. Staying down here did nothing for him, just causes more problems for him to clean up, yet he can't bring himself to leave. Why not just leave altogether? Mayoi could do it, hide in the walls, he could watch them from afar, watch his group thrive without him holding them back.

Mayoi would cheer for them from afar, someone he wouldn't taint them. He could watch Tatsumi manage his injury and power through, becoming a top idol like how he was before. Aira would blossom into a wonderful idol, he already was, he just needed some help which Mayoi was glad to give, but he'll learn how to manage by himself. He could watch Hiiro continue to grow, turning into a world famous idol like he knew he could be.

They would all go on for bigger and better things, remaining in the limelight, while Mayoi stays in their shadows. He couldn't ruin them, they could go on without him. But what about Nagisa? He knew realistically Nagisa could find someone better, someone Ibara actually approved of. If Mayoi left Nagisa would do much better too. Mayoi could watch his group go on to surpass Fine, watch them take over the idol world, but he, himself wouldn't be a part of that anymore. He would be happy watching Nagisa find someone else, he would be fine with letting Nagisa go, after all he didn't deserve him. Mayoi should break up with him anyways.

Mayoi secretly knew, he couldn't give up Nagisa that easily, but it would be what's best for him. Nagisa's probably only with him out of pity anyways. Nagisa's not calling his name out urgently right now. Mayoi's mind must be hallucinating the sound of his voice, footsteps hurriedly running across the stone floor. Oh how evil his mind is. Mayoi looks up, expecting to see nothing, but Nagisa's actually there with his phones flashlight on. Nagisa's taking in his crouched position, his tear streaked face, his bitten lips, his puffy eyes. Mayoi knows he'll leave him now, he's in such a pathetic and vulnerable state, he probably looks disgusting, like a bug.

Instead, Nagisa crouches by him pulling him into a hug, it's warm, Nagisas body is naturally warm and it's a welcome feeling compared to the cold tunnel. Nagisa doesn't say anything, just holds Mayoi, although he can tell Nagisa wants to say something, but he chooses not too. Nagisa doesn't pry, that's another reason Mayoi loves him, he didn't question him when he found out he goes in the ceilings or walls, nor does he question his weird sayings.

All Mayoi wants to do is stay like this, burying his face into Nagisas neck while he holds him, not talking. But Mayoi knows it must end at some point, yet a feeling of disappoint fills him when Nagisa detangles himself and stares at Mayoi, a silent question in his eyes. He looks away and comes to the realization, why is Nagisa even here? He should be at practice, not out in an abandoned secret passageway. So when Mayoi turns back to Nagisa, its not the answer to why he's out here crying it's "Why aren't you at practice? Your unit mates are probably worried, I'm just a disgusting bug don't bother staying with me. I'll be fine."

"My team mates will be fine, and if you are worried about Ibara, he can be ok without me for the day. Our live is not for another two weeks, there is plently of time to practice. But what about you? You seem upset, what's wrong? I'll stay with you." Nagisas words are so sincere and kind, to much so for the likes of Mayoi. He looks away, not wanting to tell him the answer, as if he did, he would surely be left here alone. Nagisa waits, but no answer is received from the phantom, only small sniffles as he stares at the floor.

Mayoi's aware that Nagisas trying to help him, and he can't help but admit it's making him aroused no matter how disgusting that may be right now.
