One of the questions I get most frequently at children’s book conferences and workshops is "how did you get an agent?". So I'm sharing how I ended up working with @eastwestlit on my blog. And I'm adding some tips for those of you interested in getting an agent. news || preptober, new website, newsletter stuff 🍂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hello, friends! I've once again emerged from an extended and unplanned social media hiatus. This time, I was cocooning myself in preparation for a few big life changes: — I moved again! This time closer to Portland, and I love it. — I redesigned my website! It's pretty snazzy. Link in bio. — I renovated my office! Loving the black accent wall. — I have been editing like a fiend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And lastly, the reason for this post: My very own take on the Preptober Workbook is here! The new and improved 2022 version includes advanced insights on internal conflict, structuring your plot, and character arcs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've been participating in NaNoWriMo off and on since 2008, and let me tell you: It's not nearly as hard as it seems to crank out 50,000 words in the span of a month. The hard part is not only cranking out those words, but making sure they're actually worthy of keeping. That's where my Preptober Workbook comes in! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This year, I'm releasing the "base" workbook for free for all of my Tier Two patrons (so for, uh, five bucks). I'll be dropping a series of expansion packs to help you customize your experience, too! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've got news on the above (as well as a few other things) coming to my newsletter soon! If you haven't subscribed, the link is in my bio if you're interested. For now, how is your month going, friends? Are you gearing up for NaNoWriMo this year, or will you be sitting out? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #NaNoWriMo #NaNoWriMo2022 #writingcommunity #amwriting #writersofinstagram #writerslife #writingtips #tipsforwriters #writergoals #writersofig https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlbkfQvocb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Writing Tips From Writers Part 1
"If you are struggling with writing a character, write 20 things that the reader will never know about your character. These will naturally bleed into your writing and provide a richness, even though you don't share the detail." -Barbara Poelle
■ What Does It Mean?
It's the writer's job to make the fiction feel real. To make your fictional characters real, you need to know them better, (no ouija board or black magic required). You can know your characters better and make your 1 dimensional characters 3 dimensional by including some questions in their character profiles such as:
-What's their favourite childhood memory?
-What's their worst childhood memory?
-What did they want to be when they were little?
-What's their current mantra/philosophy of life?
-How would their mantra change by the end of the novel, if it does?
-What do they do when they are angry?
-How would you describe them in 3 words?
-How do they look when they are nervous?
-If they were to ever end up in jail, what would be their crime?
-In a dangerous situation, would they kill or get killed?
-What kind of traumatic incident can drive them insane?
-How long it took them to pass their driving test?
■ What Can You Do With These Details?
You can include these details in the novel, or release them on your social media account, or on your Patreon account. It's always upto if and how you want to share this knowledge about the characters with your readers.
But it can always remain a part of your character and make the writing process go smooth.

Character-driven vs Plot-driven Stories
What is a Character-driven story?
Character-driven stories gravitate toward intra and interpersonal relationships with the characters.  Unlike a plot-driven story, these types of stories focus on how the character(s) arrives at a choice.
Readers tend to enjoy these types of stories because of the realistic characters authors write in those books. It allows the reader to see themselves or others in those characters, developing an emotional connection.
What is a Plot-driven story?
A Plot-driven story gravitates toward the external rather than the internal conflict. Unlike a character-driven story, these types of stories focus on the choice a character must make rather than what they do to get there.
Readers tend to enjoy these types of stories because of the well-constructed plot. Seeing a character in a situation they cannot control may provide a sense of purpose or familiarity for the reader.
(This is something my friend said she likes about plot-driven stories. It may be true for other readers, as well.)
Which is best?
I’m going to let you in on a little secret. There is no such thing as the “best” way to write a story. It all depends on preference.
If you want to write a story for an audience who will analyze your characters, write for that audience. If you want a story for an audience who will gravitate toward your well-constructed plot, write for that audience.
There is somebody out there who will love your book, I guarantee.
If you have any questions, or feel as though I’ve missed something, feel free to let me know!
