as annoying as it is to hear lol I’m glad toto is (belatedly) coming out and backing up what lewis has said about them not listening to him. toooooo many people ready to pick his statements apart and say lewis doesn’t know what he’s talking about or that he’s overreacting. even some merc fans suggesting that what lewis said wasn’t helpful or didn’t show leadership

Tesla's Dieselgate
Tumblr media
Elon Musk lies a lot. He lies about being a “utopian socialist.” He lies about being a “free speech absolutist.” He lies about which companies he founded:
https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cofounder-martin-eberhard-interview-history-elon-musk-ev-market-2023-2 He lies about being the “chief engineer” of those companies:
https://www.quora.com/Was-Elon-Musk-the-actual-engineer-behind-SpaceX-and-Tesla
He lies about really stupid stuff, like claiming that comsats that share the same spectrum will deliver steady broadband speeds as they add more users who each get a narrower slice of that spectrum:
https://www.eff.org/wp/case-fiber-home-today-why-fiber-superior-medium-21st-century-broadband
The fundamental laws of physics don’t care about this bullshit, but people do. The comsat lie convinced a bunch of people that pulling fiber to all our homes is literally impossible — as though the electrical and phone lines that come to our homes now were installed by an ancient, lost civilization. Pulling new cabling isn’t a mysterious art, like embalming pharaohs. We do it all the time. One of the poorest places in America installed universal fiber with a mule named “Ole Bub”:
https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/the-one-traffic-light-town-with-some-of-the-fastest-internet-in-the-us
Previous tech barons had “reality distortion fields,” but Musk just blithely contradicts himself and pretends he isn’t doing so, like a budget Steve Jobs. There’s an entire site devoted to cataloging Musk’s public lies:
https://elonmusk.today/
But while Musk lacks the charm of earlier Silicon Valley grifters, he’s much better than they ever were at running a long con. For years, he’s been promising “full self driving…next year.”
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/09/herbies-revenge/#100-billion-here-100-billion-there-pretty-soon-youre-talking-real-money
He’s hasn’t delivered, but he keeps claiming he has, making Teslas some of the deadliest cars on the road:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/06/10/tesla-autopilot-crashes-elon-musk/
Tesla is a giant shell-game masquerading as a car company. The important thing about Tesla isn’t its cars, it’s Tesla’s business arrangement, the Tesla-Financial Complex:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/11/24/no-puedo-pagar-no-pagara/#Rat
Once you start unpacking Tesla’s balance sheets, you start to realize how much the company depends on government subsidies and tax-breaks, combined with selling carbon credits that make huge, planet-destroying SUVs possible, under the pretense that this is somehow good for the environment:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/14/for-sale-green-indulgences/#killer-analogy
But even with all those financial shenanigans, Tesla’s got an absurdly high valuation, soaring at times to 1600x its profitability:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/15/hoover-calling/#intangibles
That valuation represents a bet on Tesla’s ability to extract ever-higher rents from its customers. Take Tesla’s batteries: you pay for the battery when you buy your car, but you don’t own that battery. You have to rent the right to use its full capacity, with Tesla reserving the right to reduce how far you go on a charge based on your willingness to pay:
https://memex.craphound.com/2017/09/10/teslas-demon-haunted-cars-in-irmas-path-get-a-temporary-battery-life-boost/
That’s just one of the many rent-a-features that Tesla drivers have to shell out for. You don’t own your car at all: when you sell it as a used vehicle, Tesla strips out these features you paid for and makes the next driver pay again, reducing the value of your used car and transfering it to Tesla’s shareholders:
https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/6/21127243/tesla-model-s-autopilot-disabled-remotely-used-car-update
To maintain this rent-extraction racket, Tesla uses DRM that makes it a felony to alter your own car’s software without Tesla’s permission. This is the root of all autoenshittification:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/#kitt-is-a-demon
This is technofeudalism. Whereas capitalists seek profits (income from selling things), feudalists seek rents (income from owning the things other people use). If Telsa were a capitalist enterprise, then entrepreneurs could enter the market and sell mods that let you unlock the functionality in your own car:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/06/11/1-in-3/#boost-50
But because Tesla is a feudal enterprise, capitalists must first secure permission from the fief, Elon Musk, who decides which companies are allowed to compete with him, and how.
Once a company owns the right to decide which software you can run, there’s no limit to the ways it can extract rent from you. Blocking you from changing your device’s software lets a company run overt scams on you. For example, they can block you from getting your car independently repaired with third-party parts.
But they can also screw you in sneaky ways. Once a device has DRM on it, Section 1201 of the DMCA makes it a felony to bypass that DRM, even for legitimate purposes. That means that your DRM-locked device can spy on you, and because no one is allowed to explore how that surveillance works, the manufacturer can be incredibly sloppy with all the personal info they gather:
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/29/tesla-model-3-keeps-data-like-crash-videos-location-phone-contacts.html
All kinds of hidden anti-features can lurk in your DRM-locked car, protected from discovery, analysis and criticism by the illegality of bypassing the DRM. For example, Teslas have a hidden feature that lets them lock out their owners and summon a repo man to drive them away if you have a dispute about a late payment:
https://tiremeetsroad.com/2021/03/18/tesla-allegedly-remotely-unlocks-model-3-owners-car-uses-smart-summon-to-help-repo-agent/
DRM is a gun on the mantlepiece in Act I, and by Act III, it goes off, revealing some kind of ugly and often dangerous scam. Remember Dieselgate? Volkswagen created a line of demon-haunted cars: if they thought they were being scrutinized (by regulators measuring their emissions), they switched into a mode that traded performance for low emissions. But when they believed themselves to be unobserved, they reversed this, emitting deadly levels of NOX but delivering superior mileage.
The conversion of the VW diesel fleet into mobile gas-chambers wouldn’t have been possible without DRM. DRM adds a layer of serious criminal jeopardy to anyone attempting to reverse-engineer and study any device, from a phone to a car. DRM let Apple claim to be a champion of its users’ privacy even as it spied on them from asshole to appetite:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
Now, Tesla is having its own Dieselgate scandal. A stunning investigation by Steve Stecklow and Norihiko Shirouzu for Reuters reveals how Tesla was able to create its own demon-haunted car, which systematically deceived drivers about its driving range, and the increasingly desperate measures the company turned to as customers discovered the ruse:
https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/tesla-batteries-range/
The root of the deception is very simple: Tesla mis-sells its cars by falsely claiming ranges that those cars can’t attain. Every person who ever bought a Tesla was defrauded.
But this fraud would be easy to detect. If you bought a Tesla rated for 353 miles on a charge, but the dashboard range predictor told you that your fully charged car could only go 150 miles, you’d immediately figure something was up. So your Telsa tells another lie: the range predictor tells you that you can go 353 miles.
But again, if the car continued to tell you it has 203 miles of range when it was about to run out of charge, you’d figure something was up pretty quick — like, the first time your car ran out of battery while the dashboard cheerily informed you that you had 203 miles of range left.
So Teslas tell a third lie: when the battery charge reached about 50%, the fake range is replaced with the real one. That way, drivers aren’t getting mass-stranded by the roadside, and the scam can continue.
But there’s a new problem: drivers whose cars are rated for 353 miles but can’t go anything like that far on a full charge naturally assume that something is wrong with their cars, so they start calling Tesla service and asking to have the car checked over.
This creates a problem for Tesla: those service calls can cost the company $1,000, and of course, there’s nothing wrong with the car. It’s performing exactly as designed. So Tesla created its boldest fraud yet: a boiler-room full of anti-salespeople charged with convincing people that their cars weren’t broken.
This new unit — the “diversion team” — was headquartered in a Nevada satellite office, which was equipped with a metal xylophone that would be rung in triumph every time a Tesla owner was successfully conned into thinking that their car wasn’t defrauding them.
When a Tesla owner called this boiler room, the diverter would run remote diagnostics on their car, then pronounce it fine, and chide the driver for having energy-hungry driving habits (shades of Steve Jobs’s “You’re holding it wrong”):
https://www.wired.com/2010/06/iphone-4-holding-it-wrong/
The drivers who called the Diversion Team weren’t just lied to, they were also punished. The Tesla app was silently altered so that anyone who filed a complaint about their car’s range was no longer able to book a service appointment for any reason. If their car malfunctioned, they’d have to request a callback, which could take several days.
Meanwhile, the diverters on the diversion team were instructed not to inform drivers if the remote diagnostics they performed detected any other defects in the cars.
The diversion team had a 750 complaint/week quota: to juke this stat, diverters would close the case for any driver who failed to answer the phone when they were eventually called back. The center received 2,000+ calls every week. Diverters were ordered to keep calls to five minutes or less.
Eventually, diverters were ordered to cease performing any remote diagnostics on drivers’ cars: a source told Reuters that “Thousands of customers were told there is nothing wrong with their car” without any diagnostics being performed.
Predicting EV range is an inexact science as many factors can affect battery life, notably whether a journey is uphill or downhill. Every EV automaker has to come up with a figure that represents some kind of best guess under a mix of conditions. But while other manufacturers err on the side of caution, Tesla has the most inaccurate mileage estimates in the industry, double the industry average.
Other countries’ regulators have taken note. In Korea, Tesla was fined millions and Elon Musk was personally required to state that he had deceived Tesla buyers. The Korean regulator found that the true range of Teslas under normal winter conditions was less than half of the claimed range.
Now, many companies have been run by malignant narcissists who lied compulsively — think of Thomas Edison, archnemesis of Nikola Tesla himself. The difference here isn’t merely that Musk is a deeply unfit monster of a human being — but rather, that DRM allows him to defraud his customers behind a state-enforced opaque veil. The digital computers at the heart of a Tesla aren’t just demons haunting the car, changing its performance based on whether it believes it is being observed — they also allow Musk to invoke the power of the US government to felonize anyone who tries to peer into the black box where he commits his frauds.

About You Pt1
Pairing: Sebastian Vettel x Webber!Reader
Summary: Everyone knows about the history of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. But there's a well kept story within the paddock about Sebastian Vettel and another Webber. This is that story.
A/N: I know I said that its a whole one shot only but I don't think that I can do it. I have to cut it because there is a lot of history. I hope you all enjoy.
About You Series: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

2005, Circuito de Jerez
The earliest memory that Y/N has of Sebastian Vettel was watching him test the Williams-BMW car.
It was her first time accompanying Mark and she was still grasping some of the key concepts of Formula 1 when Sebastian headed to the car. She watched how he drives and how the team were discussing about how he is a potential driver for the seasons to come.
"You know Seb is just a year older than you" Nico Rosberg, who has been keeping you company for the testing that afternoon, stated.
"Then that will make him the youngest driver if he enters Formula 1"Y/N mused.
Y/N didn't know but she was pretty excited to see him on track. She knew that this Sebastian will change a lot of things in F1 and will probably make history. At the same time, she can't help but be a bit worried since its a dangerous sports. One second you can be living the dream and then the next you find yourself recovering in a hospital room.
Sebastian Vettel gets out of the car and lifts his visor. There was a certain spark in his eyes that Y/N didn't miss out. Its the spark that showcase how much he loved to race.
Y/N didn't miss how her heart skipped a beat.
2006, Istanbul Park
The next time that Y/N sees Sebastian Vettel was during the free practice. He was a Friday driver for BMW-Sauber and he is as impressive as the day she first saw him in Spain.
"That kid just set out the fastest lap" her brother, Mark was shocked by the time set by Sebastian.
"That kid has a name" Y/N stated "and its Sebastian"
"Oh how come you are so informed about this missy?" he wondered
"He drove with you in testing season last year remember" Y/N replied.
The replay on the screen showcases the bold moves that were made by Sebastian. It was like he was driving like he is a man on a mission. If Y/N will bet, there is a lot of teams that will be shortlisting his name to their team.
"What do you think about him?"
"A little bit of reckless, I mean 6 seconds in your formula 1 career and you already have a penalty. There must be some kind of record for that" Mark was referring to the speeding penalty that Sebastian received as soon as he left the garage.
Y/N mumbles a small hmm as she continues to watch how Sebastian moves around the track. She was sure that sooner or later, she might see Sebastian more often.
2007, Albert Park
Fridays aren't too crowded as the Sunday races but still there was a bit of pressure in Sebastian Vettel's shoulder as he entered Albert Park.
He walked the paddocks and tried to visualize himself not just a Friday driver but an actual driver for the Sunday races. He pictures the screaming crowd chanting his name, the smell of burning rubber, radio messages from the team, and even being at the podium with the champagne.
In his daydreaming, he didn't realize that he bumped into someone. All he saw was that a girl was down on the ground with papers all over.
"I'm terribly sorry. I was not looking where I was going" he apologized.
"I'm equally at fault too"The woman assured "It was not wise to type and walk especially since this whole place is swarming with people"
Sebastian helped the girl compiling the papers and he noticed how the papers seem to be like contract for sponsorship. He looked at her and tried to identify which team did she belong to but her lack of team merchandise makes it difficult.
"You're new here?"he tries to decode.
"No, I'm not. I've been coming here since 5 years ago" there was an accent in her voice. Australian, if Sebastian was right.
"Huh, you must know your way around this whole place"
She takes a closer look at him, "You're that rookie Sebastian Vettel"
Now Sebastian doesn't have a huge following that he knows of and this is probably the first time that someone outside the family knew about him. Now, he felt even more curious about the girl.
"How did you know my name"
"Hard not to especially when you set a record to having the fastest penalty in their f1 career" she joked.
Normally Sebastian will be annoyed by the reminder of his mistake last year. He choose to forget that small mishap and avoid talking about it. But this time, he felt like the giggling is contagious that he can't help but smile when talking about his mistake.
"I assure you that I'm a much more better driver now" he states, holding up his hand as if saying that he swears he is a better a driver now.
"Hoping to see you deliver Vettel" she grins.
The girl started walking away from Sebastian when it occured to him that he didn't even know her name. He rushed to catch up with her.
"Wait, I didn't get your name"
She looked at him and there seems to be a slight hesitation
"If we meet again in a formula 1 race then I'll tell you my name" then the girl walked out of his sight.
2007, Indianopolis track.
It seems that luck has been on Y/N's side because she managed to avoid Sebastian during the past races. But it seems as if this luck is running out slowly since they are bound to meet up this weekend as Sebastian was bumped from reserve driver to formula 1 driver due to the injury that Kubica sustained in Canada.
She was hanging out at one of the coffee machines when she felt somebody tap her shoulder. She gave him a smile upon recognizing him.
"Sebastian Vettel, shouldn't you be preparing in your f1 car now?"
There was a loopy grin on his face, "Mystery woman, I was beginning to think if you are just a figment of my imagination.
Y/N pressed the hot cup to his hands, "I'm very much real and not just a figment of your mind"
"So will you tell me now your name?" Sebastian wondered. He has to admit that it has been bugging him for weeks on end about who this mystery woman is. He even went to ask around the paddock but his description was very vague and no one could help him.
"Its Y/N, nice to meet you" Purposely leaving out the last name.
In Y/N's mind it was just a safety pre-caution to leave out her last name. It was for her own good as well because people tend to act differently once they hear about your big brother or your connection to the sports. For once in her life, Y/N wants to be seen as just Y/N.
Maybe she just want to prolong this little charade for a little while longer.
"Y/N nice to finally meet you"
2007, Nürburgring
Maybe its the home turf advantage that boosted his confidence but Sebastian managed to ask Y/N if she would like a tour around the place. Thankfully, she agreed. Sebastian was already blabbering about the places that they have to get to and Y/N had to remind him that they're not staying for a vacation.
He will tell you that he is not freaking out but he prepared for the whole afternoon. He even asked his mother what outfit should he wear to make it seem like a casual hangout. In his defense, he never had a lot of friends growing up and he certainly didn't have beautiful australian girls around.
"You know you don't have to bring me flowers, were just touring around"
It was his idea to bring flowers because he often sees it in airports. When someone new is in town, they bring them flowers. He felt like the orange gerberas were a good pick as advised by the florist he knows.
"But the flowers made you smile" Sebastian grinned "I'm more than pleased to have a happy tourist to tour around"
Then two engaged in a conversation about their early life. Sebastian shared stories of the town he grew up in and his stories of motorsports.Y/N, on the other hand, listened and shared some bits of her life in Australia before she traveled around the world.
Eventually the duo ended up in an orange farm, where they picked out oranges and waited for the sunrise to set in the horizon. It was a core memory that they will share with one naother.
"We should do this again sometime"Y/N suggested
"Its a breather for you and I" Sebastian agreed "Away from all the lavishness of F1 and the pressure of the sports"
"Sounds like you wanted to run away with me"
"Who wouldn't want to run away with someone like you?"
2007, Fuji Speedway.
The past few weeks has been stressful for the Webber siblings. The articles published by some news sites seems to be getting on Mark's last nerve. Everyone seems to be taunting him about how he is over a hundred of race starts already but then he still haven't won anything. The pressure is high and Mark was determined to prove them wrong.
"Mark just don't do anything stupid okay?" Y/N begs.
She watches as Mark suit up for the next race. She was already used to her brother racing but she knew this race was a little different since her brother wanted to win.
"I'm not going to be stupid Y/N, I'll drive good today and I'll get that win that they want"Mark grumbled.
Y/N handed the helmet to her brother, "Just stay safe, I don't want to lose you"
"I'll come back safe"
The race went underway and as usual, Y/N watches it in the comforts of the driver's room. She did not want too many attention focused on her and she felt like her heart might actually come out of her rib cage if she watches it on the stands.
Japan's wet races gives Y/N a heavy feeling that something bad might happen. Her heart beats rapidly as she watches cars after cars spin out or crash. She prays that none of them was Mark. or Sebastian.
There was 20 laps to go when her ears started ringing that a Red Bull has been rear-ended by a Toro Rosso.
'Please don't let it be Mark and Seb. Please don't let it be Mark and Seb'
But the voices in the Red Bull pitlanes and the storming voices of Mark confirms her worst nightmare.
"That kid is so stupid, he shouldn't have been allowed to drive" Mark roared "I had that in the bag, I was going to win"
Y/N immediately hugged her brother, "Its alright, the win will be coming soon Mark. What matters is you are safe"
There were frustrated tears from Mark as he cried in the embrace of his sister. Privacy was given to the siblings as the race continues on. She was so focused on her brother that she didn't notice that there were several messages in her phone.
Seb: Where are you? Seb: I messed up my race and Webber. Seb: Call me when you get this. Please?
2007, Shanghai International Circuit
It felt like a heavy weight on Sebastian's shoulder after he messed up. He kept on blaming himself that he did not just mess up his own race but he also messed up Webber's race. It did not help that Y/N was not replying.
The media has also been eating him up with the way that Webber responded to him. He was called a kid that did not have enough experience. It stings a lot but now he has to put up a brave face and just race.
"SEB! SEB!"
Sebastian looked back and he saw Y/N. There was no hesitation in him but he immediately hugged her. It was the only time ever since Japan that people aren't mad at him or hounding him for questions. He felt at ease to be with Y/N.
"Where have you been, I have been messaging you over the weekend"
"I'm here now, aren't I?" Y/N says "And before I forget, I made you this as a token of my apology"
In her hand, she has a paper bag. Sebastian's curiosity is piqued upon looking at the contents inside the bag. There was a tupperware with food and a sticky note in a messy handwriting "for sebastian vettel, you can do it."
"You cook?"
"I don't but hey its the thought that counts. I figure that you might need-"
Y/N doesn't have to explain a lot because Sebastian already appreciated the gesture. He hugged her again and it seems like everything just got a little bit lighter for Sebastian that weekend.
It wasn't Sebastian's weekend at all but remembering the little note, that was tucked inside his helmet, he felt a lot better. He can bounce back next season.
2008,  Autodromo Nazionale di Monza
This was the internal dilemma of being Sebastian's friend and being Mark's sister. The two of them are in different side of the coins for this season. Two drivers shared the same family with Toro Rosso being the sister family of Red Bull but it seems like that's their only similarity.
Then there was the mixed emotion. Of course, Y/N was proud of Sebastian because he is slowly improving and shining with every grand prix. She was always elated when they see each other post-qualifying or post-race at the hotel rooftop (it has been their common knowledge that they will meet up there so that they can get fresh air together). On the other hand, Y/N knows about the pressure that it is being placed with her brother. Mark has been declining and losing hope for a maiden win. He has been in the sports for some time and he believes his time should have arrived by now but he lost opportunity after opportunity.
Y/N can't fault anyone for this one. Both of them just wanted to achieve their dreams. She wished everything does not have to escalate but here they are in the 2008 Monza Grand Prix.
Sebastian Vettel was starting on pole while Mark was starting third. Everyone is buzzing about the possibility that Toro Rosso might clinch a first win before Red Bull. It was something that Y/N knew bugged Mark's mind.
It didn't help that it was a rainy start and it sort of brought her back to Japan 2007. She was not an overly religious person but she prayed to any higher being to please don't let Mark and Sebastian crash with each other again.
The race went underway and the rain was not as heavy as Japan. Still there was some crashes and some spin. But Y/N felt the conflict of emotions start again upon seeing how Mark started to drop places while Sebastian pulled away from the rest.
Y/N went out of the driver room when it was nearing the end of the lap. She didn't know whether she should run and congratulate Sebastian or she should stay behind and comfort his brother.
Of course, blood is thicker than water.
Mark looks absolutely defeated as people started to ask him about how he is feeling when their sister group got its first win before them or how did he manage to mess up his 3rd position to eight.
"Just please give him some space, we will be answering the questions later" Y/N stepped up. Right now she was not Mark's sister but rather Mark's assistant.
Y/N helped Mark to go back to his driver's room so he can get a few minutes to himself before he gets questioned by the media again.
"It feels like shit. I feel like I can't do anything right" Mark threw his gloves across the room.
"It wasn't your time yet Mark" Y/N replied. Its like a broken record at this point which frustrates Mark.
"Then when will it be my time? Sebastian has been here for just a year or so and he already have a grand prix victory"
Y/N knew that this was the dam breaking. No words can comfort her brother right now so she just went to give him a hug. She could only wish in silence that Mark gets his win eventually.
On the other side of the paddock, there was cheering. Sebastian Vettel was in cloud 9 as he saw the Toro Rosso mechanics and engineers calls out his name. Everyone was in full party mode that they have even tossed Sebastian up in the air.
Everyone wanted to talk to him. They wanted to ask him about how he is feeling or how he created history today. He was the youngest driver to have a maiden win and the first one to bring victory to Toro Rosso.
But Sebastian eyes seem to search for someone in the crowd. He wouldn't voice it out but there was a certain woman he was hoping to see when he stepped into the podium. It had a slight twinge in his heart but the roaring crowd silenced that feeling.
'Maybe I'll see her later' Sebastian thought.
However, there was no Y/N in sight for the rest of the weekend.
2008, Marina Bay Street Circuit
Sebastian was still experiencing the highs of his Monza win and the Singapore GP has also been a good race for him. He might not have a podium finish but 5th was good enough. However if there was one thing that bothered Sebastian was the lack of Y/N sightings.
He tried messaging her after Monza but there was no reply. He thinks its probably weird that he didn't even get a congratulations because surely Y/N would know about it. There might be a couple of reasons why she didn't see it which is a) she was sick or b) she resigned.
Sebastian was gunning for the first choice because surely Y/N won't just resign without saying goodbye.
So imagine his surprise when he saw the woman that has been bugging his mind at the exit of the pitlane.
"You could have answered my texts you know" that was Sebastian's greeting to her
Y/N seems to be caught off-guard by Sebastian's presence. She was still in her work outfit Sebastian takes note as she was carrying a tote bag.
"I'm sorry. It just got a little busy for me"
Sebastian nods, he understands how having a job here is quite difficult. He could not fault her for that.
"Why not lets celebrate? I won in Monza and I finished fifth here"Sebastian offered "Consider it as your make up dinner for not congratulating me"
There was that hesitant smile gracing her face again and it reminded Sebastian of the first time she didn't tell her name. She seems extremely conflicted.
"Seb I would love to but I still have to do some work and-"
"Y/N, there you are"
Sebastian and Y/N whipped their head to the source of the voice. Mark Webber started walking towards them. It confused Sebastian as to why he knew Y/N but then he remembered that Mark was probably the one that Y/N has been working with.
"I told you to wait for me"Mark says as he picked up the bag of Y/N "I was just fixing some things with Christian"
"I can carry my stuffs myself Mark" Y/N replied
"But you have been walking in your heels the whole day, it's going to make you cranky sooner or later" Mark quipped back.
Now this confused Sebastian. It seems like their dynamics is not just work related but rather something personal. He also felt like he has missed a whole chapter and he feels very invisible at the moment.
"You two know each other?"Sebastian managed to ask.
There was a panic in Y/N eyes as if she wanted to explain but it was Mark that beat her to it.
"Of course, I know her" Mark admitted "Why wouldn't I know my sister?"
And it was that moment that Sebastian pieced out why she haven't been able to message him or why she was MIA as well in Japan. He felt stupid because he never inquired why she didn't give out her last name or why she was booked at the same hotel as the drivers.
Great just fucking great.
2008, Interlagos
It was eating her alive that Sebastian is not in speaking terms with her.
In hindsight, she understands that sooner or later, she has to tell him about who really is. She just didn't know that it will be as early and as unprepared as what happened in Singapore. She also got an earful from Mark who questioned how did she manage to meet Sebastian and why does it seem like the two are close with each other.
Honestly, she can't wait for the season to be over so that she can rest from all the drama but she knows that she has to make amends before winter break starts.
And so she slipped to the Toro Rosso garage, under the disguise that as Mark's assistant, she has to talk to Sebastian. So here she is in Sebastian's driver room, waiting for him to arrive.
"Can't I deal with this after-"Sebastian immediately stopped in his tracks upon seeing Y/N "Oh its you"
Silence enveloped the two of them. Y/N has a practiced script in her head but no words doesn't want to come out.
"I'm giving you five minutes or I'm kicking you out" Sebastian warned.
"I just came here to say that I am sorry. It wasn't really my intention to deceive you. I just wanted to be friends with you without my last name being too intimidating. I know that its terrible but I was going to tell you my name someday but Mark just got into the way and its all shit"
She was word-vomitting, she was sure of it. But hey its better than keeping everything as a burden on the shoulders.
"Say something please?" Y/N wondered with Sebastian's silence.
"You could have told me, don't you trust me?"
"I trust you Sebastian. Its just, its really complicated to be seen as Mark's sister or Mark's assistant. I just want to be just Y/N when I'm with you"Y/N sighs.
Y/N felt bummed as she thought she could fix this before winter break starts but she knows he might need some time.
"I know that its not easy to forgive me. Its selfish of me to do that so I won't force you to forgive me" she says "I'll give you some time to collect your thoughts"
Y/N reached out for the door when she felt a hand tugging her back. She saw Sebastian reaching out.
"Just give me some time"
"I will. Don't worry" she understands "I have to say I'm really proud of you this season. You did well Seb"
There was that silence when Sebastian held her. She knows things are far from okay and there is the upcoming season that has the possibility of Sebastian being upgraded to Red Bull but in this moment, none of that matters. Its just them. Just Y/N and Seb.

Always There, Women in Motorsport: The fast women of la belle époque
Women's history in motorsport is rich, and that has always been the case. Most of these stories however aren’t well known and aren’t spoken about enough. Women have always been in motorsport and always will be.
Three French women, Hélène van Zuylen, Camille du Gast, and Anne de Rochechouart de Mortemart are some of the fastest women from France’s La Belle Epoque (circa 1880-1914).
In 1898 Anne de Rochechouart de Mortemart (1847-1933) (also known as the Duchess of Uzes) became the first woman in France to obtain her driver’s license. While getting out of the car she announced with delight that woman had just overcome a new barrier. Not long after she also became the first to be caught speeding for which she had to pay a five franc fine.
in 1926 she founded the first female Automobile Club, L'Automobile Club féminin de France (ACFF)
Tumblr media
The Duchess of Uzes in 1927
Hélène van Zuylen (pictured on the cover image) was a French author but also the first woman to compete in an international auto race. Baron Etienne van Zuylen, her husband, was the President of the Automobile Club de France
She entered the 1898 Paris–Amsterdam–Paris using the nickname Snail, while her husband used the nickname Escargot. She successfully competed the trail and entered the Paris-Berlin race in 1901 but was stopped by technical failure.
That year Hélène, a lesbian, would meet Renée Vivien with whom she would have an affair. Vivien's letters to a confidant revealed that she considered herself married to Hélène. Most of Vivien's work is dedicated to "H.L.C.B.," the initials of Zuylen's first names.
Just over a decade before she died, Hélène van Zuylen created the Renée Vivien Prize, Honoring the woman she loved and intending to give encouragement to female writers.

Camille du Gast (1868-1942) finished 33rd (19th in class) out of 122 participants in the 1901 Paris-Berlin race. Du Gast, achieved the results despite driving her husband's 20CV Panhard-Levassor which was not designed for racing. She had to start the race in last because she was a woman. The race did mark 2 female competitors with du Gast and van Zuylen. She loved several extreme sports such as mountaineering, parachuting and frencing.
In 1902 she competed in the Paris-Vienna race and also wanted to compete in the New York-San Francisco but was refused entry because she was a woman.
In 1903 she would start the Paris-Madrid race. Which she would enter with a proper racing car, a works 5.7-litre de Dietrich car. It was a chaotic race with 207 competitors which unfortunately saw several deaths. Camille started in 29th and gained 9 positions in the first 120 km. She had climbed up to P8 before stopping to give medical aid to a fellow driver, Phil Stead (also driving a de Dietrich) involved in a near-fatal crash.
Tumblr media

Later one of the leading drivers at that time, Charles Jarrot said that if Camille had not stopped Stead likely would have died. After an ambulance arrived she continued the race eventually finishing 44th or 45th in the shortened race.
The French government would stop the race at Bordeaux, as over half of the field (275 cars) had either crashed or retired and several drivers and spectators had died.
Open road racing was banned, so in 1904 Camille wanted to participate in the French elimination trial for the Gordon Bennett races, as the Benz factory team offered du Gast a race seat. But the Autosport Club France (ACF) banned women from racing. Du Gast published a letter in protest but the ban was defended as the ACF could not risk a woman getting injured or killed in a racing event.
Because of this she ventured to boat racing. One of those races was caught by a big storm which saw most competitors either abandon their ship or they sank. She was rescued and later declared the winner of that race.
Eventually she had to put a halt to her adventurous life when she survived an assassination attempt by her daughter. Nothing was ever the same for her after that. From that point she devoted herself to animals. She would serve as president of the 'French Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals'

Poles, podiums, and the best of the rest.
Who are all these handsome young men in colorful jumpsuits that seem to have taken over your dashboard this year? And where exactly are they going in those really fast cars?????
Over the past few years, Formula 1 has spread into all corners of culture, and Tumblr is no exception. People around the world have learned about F1’s 70 years of history, its international circuits in cities like Monaco and Abu Dhabi, and its Grand Prix schedule of Free Practice, Qualifying, and the races themselves. Tumblr being Tumblr, though, it’s really all about the drivers: 20 of them per year, two for each of the ten official teams. Add in all the other assorted characters that orbit around the current grid, and you have quite the lineup to follow each weekend.
F1 and its fast boys have been appearing in our Week in Review lists as far back as 2020, and on last year’s Year In Review Athletes list, drivers took up a healthy 6 out of the top 10 spots. This year, the sport’s domination of the dashboard kicked it up a notch: There was an 18% increase in engagement with the Formula 1 tag in 2022 compared with last year, and Lestappen (aka Max Verstappen/Charles Leclerc) became the very first F1 ship to hit a Week In Review ships list on July 10, 2022.
A lot of this might have something to do with the growing popularity of Netflix’s Drive to Survive docuseries, which follows the twists and turns of each F1 season, shining a light on the personal lives of the drivers and their team members. Tumblr’s interest in the sport just feels natural: with all of its drama, excitement, and contained, charismatic, and frequently controversial ensemble cast, it seems tailor-made for Tumblr users who enjoy sports anime and adventure dramas.
So, what’s the pitch for F1? Whether you root for the underdog or support the champion, there’s a storyline for you. The interweaving backstories of the drivers, many of whom have grown up driving together since they were kids, are like catnip to Tumblr’s love for characters with history. And, of course, there are the races themselves—high-tech cars going hundreds of miles per hour. What’s not to love?
Or, as @gaslightgirlsummer puts it: these men are all millionaire tax evaders trying to kill each other and/or themselves in the fastest cars on the planet (that are worth more money than most people will ever have in their lifetimes) on a weekly basis.
Whether a longtime fan or newly interested, you’ve probably seen F1 around Tumblr this year, featuring in fan art, GIFsets, and a plentiful amount of very silly memes. But, in case you’ve ever been curious about who Tumblr loves the most, here are the top 35 Formula 1 tags in 2022, featuring not just current drivers but retired drivers, reserve drivers, upcoming drivers, race engineers, and team principals, too.
Lewis Hamilton
Charles Leclerc
Daniel Ricciardo

And, because it wouldn’t be Formula 1 without a Constructor’s Championship, here’s the ranking of teams on Tumblr:

Haas
Alpine
Alfa Romeo
Williams
AlphaTauri

Limitless
The Gods are everywhere, you just have to look. They’re not trapped stagnant in the myths and stories, nor in the stale histories of cultures long past. Omnipresent in their own ways, the Gods can connect with anyone at any time.
Athena can be found walking the aisles of a Harvard library, in the study room with a first generation college student, or in between the cardboard pages of a child’s first board book. Knowledge isn’t limited to the elite or the privileged, and neither is Athena.
Apollo can be found in the galleries of prestigious art museums, in the bedroom of an aspiring anime artist, or in the imagination of a child scribbling with crayons. He is on the stage of a sold out stadium as well as in the back row of the cheapest seats. Art and creativity isn’t limited to those with influence or connections, and neither is Apollo.
Hephaestus can be found in the offices of any corporate building, under the machinery of a blue collar factory, or in the joy of a teenager as they receive their first paycheck. He is found in the Paralympics, boosting the athletes onward, and he is also sitting with the hospital and rehab rooms of those recently disabled. Hard work is not limited to anyone’s status or abilities, and neither is Hephaestus.
Aphrodite can be found on the covers of fashion magazines, in the dreams of an hopeful makeup artist, and in the playfulness of a child playing with their mother’s lipstick. Aphrodite can be in the appeal of sexy fishnets or the allure of a well tailored suit. Beauty and love are not limited to one’s gender or skills, and neither is Aphrodite.
Hermes can be found flying alongside the highest reaching airplanes, the fastest driving cars, and on a seat on public transit in rush hour. He is the luck that saves the lives of a vehicular accident, and the thrill in that first payment on a used car. Luck and speed are not limited to how far or how fancy your transportation can go, and neither is Hermes.
Zeus can be found behind the bench of a supreme court case, in the office of an overworked pubic defender, and in the thunderous laughter of a new father. He is in the welcoming smile of a stranger to those in need, and in the homeless being invited in. Justice and hospitality are not limited to one’s power or status, and neither is Zeus.
Hera can be found in a fabulous wedding with hundreds of guests, in the celebration of a long lasting marriage, or officiating the ceremony in a courthouse. She is in the “I love you”’s before bed, the hands held in the car after a first date, and in the hospital room of an elderly couple saying goodbye for the last time. Love is not limited to the length of one’s relationship, and neither is Hera.
Artemis can be found in the fields and forests of nature, in the calm breath of a hunter, or in the tears of grief for a lost pet. She is the courage in the voices fighting for respect and in the cheer of progress made. Equal treatment peace is not limited to those who hold the power, and neither is Artemis.
Hestia can be found in the jingle of a first-time homeowners’ new keys, in the shared dinner of a multi-generational home, or in the exhausted smile of a single parent. She is the warmth of a household and the love shared within its walls. Family and support is not limited to those you share blood with or in the size of your dwelling, and neither is Hestia.
Ares can be found in the measured steps of a solider over seas, in the joyous tears of a spouse when their loved one comes home, and in the flag wrapped around a coffin. He is in the voices of those calling for change, in the recovery rooms of the wounded, and in the minds of those struggling with trauma. Safety and wellness are not limited to one’s demographics and neither is Ares.
Hades can be found in the grief left behind after a death, in the weight of responsibility of leaders, and in the darkness of winter. He is with those who cry and fear for their lives, and in the scars left behind the pain can be too much. Loss and recovery is not limited to those strong enough to withstand it and neither is Hades.
Persephone can be found in the joy at the first warm day, in the love bridging distance between lovers, and in the will of those daring to strive for their dreams. She is the wonderment of a child at a honeybee, and the beauty found in the darkness. Energy and strength is not limited to the times of light and color, and neither is Persephone.
Demeter can be found in the engines of the machines in a field, in the bounty of a community garden harvest, and in the first sprouts of an amateur gardener. She is the change of the seasons and the rebirth of the new year. Change and plenty are not limited to those with capital or land, and neither is Demeter.
Dionysus can be found on the floats of a pride parade, in the movements pushing for equality, and in the bedroom of a closeted teenager. He is both the euphoria and dysphoria felt by some in their bodies, and in the community embracing those who feel lost. Rights and identity are not limited to those who one loves or how one looks, and neither is Dionysus.
Poseidon can be found on the decks of a ship in a storm, on the docks with a father teaching his son to fish, or in the serenity on a sandy beach. He is the joyful screams of children running from the waves and the persistence in one learning how to swim. Power and possibility is not limited to the oceans and or one’s skills, and neither is Poseidon.

She is known for being the only woman to be an official Formula One driver since Giovanna Amati in 1992 and the second female driver with points since Lella Lombardi in 1976, thus creating history in the world of motorsport. At the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix she took her first victory, becoming the first woman in history to win a grand prix.
After a competition against Valtteri Bottas with whom she remained tied in terms of points during the last three races of the 2019 season, she won the title of sub champion in the drivers' world championship giving Ferrari the second place in the constructors' world championship.
In 2020 she suffered a horrible accident that made her unable to finish the Tuscan Grand Prix, after that race her results during the last eight races went down.
In the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix she returned to the podium (and in the championship) in second position after a close competition against Max Verstappen due to losing control of her car causing both of them to almost collide, but she managed to regain control and finish the race without no harm.
Her younger brother, Oliver Torres, is a Moto GP driver for Yamaha Motor Racing.
𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗛𝗬 ↓
Arabella was born in Leganés, a Madrid’s municipality, on 26 may 2000, as the eldest of two siblings: she and her little brother, Oliver Torres. Since she was a little girl she grew up with Formula 1 at home, as her father was a big fan and never missed a race although she was not too interested in the motor world of until one of her uncles gifted her brother a mini kart for christmas that she ended up using it, which sparked her curiosity about cars.
Her interest in cars began to grow, she began to watch Formula 1 with her father and her uncle, she noticed car brands and models and was passionate about car movies. She has mentioned several times that the Fast And Furious saga is one of her favorites.
From December 2018 to December 2020 she resided in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In 2021 she bought an apartment in London, England with her partner, the spanish football player Hector Bellerin. She currently lives between Monte Carlo and London.
𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗥 ↓
Torres began her racing career in karting at the young age of 9, competing in different categories. She won the Spanish Championship in the novice category in 2009, won the cadet category in 2010 and two more consecutive times. In 2013, in the KF3 European Championship she had a horrible accident when she reached second place, thus being the only race that she has not finished, a tire on her car burst causing her to fly several meters until she crashed into a fence in front of the stands. She had several spinal injuries and had to undergo surgery several times so she had to retire for a year, losing the opportunity to be signed by the Red Bull Junior Team.
At the age of 14, a year after her accident she returned to the world of motorsport in Formula 3 with Prema PowerTeam, finishing in sixth position in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, in 2015 she finished on the podium in second position.
In 2016 she signed with the Ferrari Driver Academy and entered Formula 2 where she won first place in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.
Two years later, in 2019, she was announced as a driver for Scuderia Ferrari for Formula 1 alongside Charles Leclerc. During her contract with Ferrari she raced 38 races of which she won 9 and came second in the 2019 drivers' championship.
On December 13 2020, during the race in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari announced that Torres would not be part of the team for the following season and a week later it was announced that she would be replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr. On March 2 2022 during the presentation of their new car Mercedes announced, after almost three months of confusion about Arabella's future in Formula 1, that the driver had signed a contract with them for a duration of eight years, that is, until 2029.

I gotcha Partner- Jay Halstead
Summary: After chasing down a suspect, you have a bad asthma attack.
Warnings: none that I know of.
Authors note: Jay’s installment in the platonic asthma fics. ❤️ Enjoy!
—————————
You have been Jay Halstead’s partner since Erin Lindsey left 2 years ago. You had been friend prior to this partnership, having met at Molly’s as well, so the partnership was easy to fall into. You knew each others quirks well, but you also knew each other’s medical history very well given all the near deaths you two have experienced since being partners. You have never experienced more near death experience on the job before working with Jay Halstead.
Today, you and Jay, along with the rest of the intelligence unit, are sitting on a suspect’s house. This individual has been indicted for multiple counts of aggravated assault and battery, leading the unit to believe that he is involved in a string of assaults at a few night clubs he has been known to frequent. He’s smarter than most criminals. He makes sure not to hit the same club multiple times, but to randomly jump around to throw off any suspicion.
You and Jay were sat in his truck, idly chatting about Matt’s move into the apartment with you and Kelly, when the suspect pulled into his driveway. You both straightened up as Voight began to speak.
“Suspect has landed. Suspect has landed. Use caution. Don’t spook him.” Voight instructed through our radio.
Jay grabbed our tac gear from the backseat and handed me my own. We suited up before slowly pulling the truck to block the end of the driveway. Burgess and Adam came up one side while Voight and Atwater came up the other. You noticed blood on his door handle and quickly jumped out of the truck and rounded it to grab the guy.
“Chicago PD!” You yelled, announcing yourself before moving to grab the suspect. Unfortunately, he was quick to react and shoved you into Kim before running down the small alley way next to his house. “Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!” You yelled, quickly standing to your feet to pursue. You were the smallest and the fastest, next to Kevin.
You heard Jay flip the sirens and say he was going to cut him off. Kevin was on your heels, cursing about how the perps always run but they can’t run from you all. You shook your head, pushing through the burning in your chest. You were still recovering from your attack a few days prior, so you definitely weren’t in top shape.
You saw the end of alley way, thanking God that this run was coming to an end. Just as the suspect reached the end of the alley, Jay pulled the truck to block it and held the suspect at gun point through the window.
“Put your hands up.” Jay growled, seeing the blood on the suspect’s shirt and knuckles.
You stopped running, coming to a halt at the back of the truck with your hands on your knees. You were having trouble catching your breath as an audible wheeze left your body. You dizzily grabbed the bumper as you sunk to the ground. Jay saw you and quickly jumped out of the truck as Kevin cuffed the perp.
“Y/n?!” Jay yelled, crouching down in front of you. “Jesus. Your blue.” Jay muttered, taking your face in his hands for a second. You were ice cold. “It’s okay. I gotcha partner. Up we go.” Jay muttered, pulling you into his arms and rounding the truck.
“She okay?” Voight asked, coming to open the door for Jay.
“She will be. She’s having an asthma attack.” Jay said over your wheezes. He dug around in the glove box until he unearthed your inhaler. “Alright sweetie. Let’s do this.” Jay shook the inhaler before helping you squeeze the trigger as you attempted to breathe.
“Here. I got a pulse ox from the first aid kit.” Kim said, jogging back from her and Adam’s car. She handed the device to Jay before moving back to give you and Jay some room.
They all waiting on baited breath as the pulse ox read. High heart rate and oxygen level fluctuating between 83-85. Their eyes grew wide at the reading, concerned given that your inhaler should have opened you up by now.
“I’m taking her to med.” Jay said, buckling you in and shutting the door.
“I will give you an escort.” Voight said, quickly running to his SUV that Kevin pulled around after placing the suspect in the back of a patrol car.
“5021 George to Med” Jay said into his radio, lights and sirens blaring as he drove.
“Go ahead for Med.” April said.
“April. Y/n is having a bad asthma attack. Cyanotic, high pulse, O2 is low to mid 80s. Rescue inhaler administered and not helping. ETA 5 minutes. ” Jay reported, glancing over at you as you shook. “Shhh. I gotcha partner. I’m gonna get you help.”
“We will be waiting at the door. Med out.” April said.
Jay put his radio back on the dash before reaching out to take one of your shaking hands in his own. “Almost there. You are doing great.” Jay encouraged, trying to hide his worry.

Bruce’s unfinished masterpiece...
Titled ‘Bruce’s Unfinished Masterpiece’ in honour of Bruce McLaren, the founder of McLaren, the M6GT is the latest race car to be stripped bare in INK’s signature minimalistic aesthetic. INK’s commemoration of McLaren’s vision revives the lost history of a car that almost slipped into obscurity.
An homage to speed and form in the purest sense, the Plainbodies series takes historical race cars and peels away their classic liveries to reveal the practical beauty in the bodies underneath. Rendered in white, the McLaren M6GT is the latest to join a line-up that includes the Ferrari 250 GTO, Ferrari 330 P4, Ford GT40, Jaguar D-Type, Porsche 917 and Porsche 959, to name a few.
Bruce McLaren, pioneering race car driver, designer, and engineer, began to conceive of the M6GT in the late 1960s, imagining it as the fastest road car in existence. Bruce McLaren’s vision for the M6GT is the genesis for all McLaren road cars. Based on the latest race technology, the M6GT was superlight, blistering quick, confidence inspiring and safe, and continues to define the McLaren brand today.
In 1969, new manufacturing regulations required McLaren to build 50 identical models of the M6GT car, a requirement that McLaren could not meet at the time. This rule would ultimately doom the M6GT, leaving it confined to the pages of history as an unfinished masterpiece.
Unfortunately, just one year later in 1970, Bruce McLaren passed away and his vision for the M6GT died with him. His legacy lived on through a race-spec prototype, the OBH 500H, which continues to tell the story of McLaren's innovative ambition to race at Le Mans and deliver a road-legal supercar only a few years after the establishment of his company.

I took a moment tonight and watched the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix which was the third race of that year and the 1000 Grand Prix of all time. Here are some Interesting takeaway listening to the 56 laps that were led my Sir Lewis Hamilton. These are anecdotes about the race and F1 overall at the time.
- Valtteri Bottas took pole for the 7th time in his career O_O
- Valtteri was 1st in the championship at this point
- Lance out in Q1 7 races in a row (history never seems to not repeat)
- Alex Albon from the pit lane O_O
- 59th time Merc has locked out the front row in the history
- Strategy in 2019 was a planned 1 stop | Became a 2 stop for most teams to try and use mediums in the end for speed (M/H/M)
- 2 drivers spun during the formation trying to warm up their tyres with the corner elevation changes
- Torro Rosso took out both McLarens, dropping them to the back of the grid
- race went green while McLaren tried to change their parts post damage
- Lewis broke away on the start, taking 1st cleanly
- Vettel was pressuring Charles the same way Sainz does now (Charles 1st year at Ferrari)
- Lap 10 aired team orders for Charles >_< "go faster or else"
- Lap 11 aired team order for Charles to swap
- Lap 18 Nico retired due to mechanical issues
- Lap 18 Landos wing was scrapping as he came down the main straight
- Halfway Merc lockout holds with 5second gap
- Winds were are large talking point there, and its only gotten worse with the size of the cars now
- Famed Merc double pit stop on lap 36 was crazy
- Lap 43 Kyvat with Torro Rosso retired
- Lap 49 Lewis asked if Valtteri was under pressure from Seb O_O
- Also Lap 49 and Alex Albon in 10th got lapped by the top 3 in the 2nd to last corner
- Lap 45 Tom informed us Nico reported the problem that retired him
- Lap 50 and they were already talking about swapping Gasly Albon between the Red Bull teams O_O

____________________________________________________
The race was going to have a rolling start. It was pouring but this was your element. You were a god on wet tyres and you were half confident that it could be your chance to take the lead in the championship.
“Focus, P. We have a long one ahead of us. Go hunting.” “Copy that.”
P was your team nickname. It stood for princess which had been your nickname at the start of the year, when you were new and you being a woman was low hanging fruit. Aston Martin, your mechanics, engineers, Jimmy the social media admin, Lance and even Mike had noticed your annoyance and taken the nickname to empower you instead. Even most of the commentators and journalists called you P too.
You were the princess of Formula 1 but not in the way that most men thought. You weren’t a soft, delicate flower ready to wilt away. You were a hardy rose, thorns out to get anyone who dared try to hurt you, your beauty hiding the strength that was within.
Princess became ‘P’ on the radio as it was shorter and the rest was history.
“Copy that, G.” Radio silence until I needed him, just as I liked.
---
“Oh that is a terrible spin, that was a cheap tactic from Verstappen. He is getting frustrated with his 5th position behind her and has spun her around trying to overtake. He is definitely getting a penalty for that, that’s not on.”
“Absolutely Crofty, he knows better than to do that in the wet at Suzuka.”
“What a dick! Asshole! Check for damage please.” You had been spun 360 which meant you were facing the right way but as you got going, the car felt off and you suspected you had a puncture.
“Puncture rear right. Box, box.”
You wanted to scream but made your way safely to the pits, your team out waiting for you. They were a dream and your pitstop was over before you could blink and you were out re-entering the track in 7th.
“That was a sparkling pitstop from the Aston Martin team. How did it look down there for you, Ted?”
“Yes, Crofty, a 1.95-second pitstop, so the fastest we have seen this season and as I look into the garage I can see Seb Vettel clapping enthusiastically. He has clearly realised that she has taken his place as the 3rd fastest pit stop of all time. Very impressive work from the boys and girls down here at Aston Martin.”
“Bloody brilliant guys.” “Chase them down, P.”
Over the next 20 laps, you had gotten back up to 3rd, with Lance in 1st and Max in 2nd. You could see them battling up ahead of you. You were nervous for Lance, it was clear that Max was getting desperate for that first place.
As you exited 130R, you watched up ahead as Max tapped Lance down the straight. You gasped reflexively and held your breath. Lance’s car swerved slightly on track but he managed to catch himself as Max hurtled off through the grass into the barrier.
“Is Max ok?” There was a moment of silence.
“Yeah P, he is out of the car.”
“Well… play stupid games, win stupid prices.”
You were now second with a wounded number 18 car infront of you.
“Do you want me to defend?” You caught yourself as you let go of the radio button. Instead of asking permission to attack, you had instead offered to defend your team mate to the finish line just 2 laps away. That wasn’t like you, you were a blood thirsty racer, who, now that Max was in the gravel, was leading the championship.
The more you looked ahead at Lance’s car and in your mirrors for Daniel in the other Redbull 5 seconds behind, you suddenly realised why you had offered to defend. Because Lance was defending you in the exact same way off track. You were paying him back in the only way you knew how.
“Starting the last lap now, P. Ricciardo 3 seconds behind. Hold strong, he shouldn’t catch you.”
Lance was struggling to keep the car on track, his steering column must be bent but he was keeping a good pace and you were able to drive in the clean air around him.
“G, are we going to make it?” You were watching Ricciardo in your mirror’s as he seemed to be getting closer. “Hold position, P. He is 2.5 seconds behind.”
“Keep me updated.” You were beginning to panic now. Do you leave Lance for dead and overtake him for P1? Do you continue to stay back and hope you can defend the skilful late-breaker behind you?
“2 seconds behind.” You had a half lap left and Lance’s car was starting to slow. “Lance has an engine problem.”
“Fuck.” You were thinking on the fly, literally, as you exited 130R again at 303km/h. Then you had it, this idea would work perfectly as long as Lance could hold enough speed to get through the Casio Triangle.
“You have permission to overtake, P.” You didn’t move position. “Does Lance still have race pace?”
“Just about, P. Be smart, ok?” “Copy. Tell Lance TRS round 3.” “Copy.”
Did he remember? It has been a whole 8 years ago back when you were teammates again in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand. Although a move that you had used in qualifying and not to save your team’s 1-2, it would work. As you entered turn 18, you shot past Lance who had left an opening for you out of the turn. As you surged past, he swiftly moved back to slot in right behind you and you created a tow, pulling him away from Daniel and across the line in 2nd.
You were elated, screaming down the radio but not because you had won, not because you were now margins ahead in the championship, but because Lance would be standing on the step right next to you.
“P, when you retire as a driver one day, you can have my job. That was bloody brilliant. You are a legend, P. The Princess of the Paddock and the Princess of Tactics. Well done, bring it back to parc ferme, you know where to park it.”
“Thank you a million everyone, the best team a girl could ask for, tell Lance congrats.”
As you did your lap around Suzuka, waving to the fans as you went, you didn’t know what was happening back at the garage.
Sebastian was hugging and cheering with Hanna both delighted that Aston Martin had gotten a 1-2. Mechanics that he had previous worked with were jumping on him and clapping his back before they all ran to the barrier.
Seb felt a buzz in his back pocket and pulled it out to see who had messaged him, most likely in congratulations of you. Instead he was met with a vaguely familiar email.
Hello family and friends of the Lyons, I am pleased to announce that in order for my fiancée to focus on her 2023 driver’s championship, we have moved our wedding to the 1st of October in Qatar. We hope to see you all there still.
Many thanks,
The Lyons
Seb’s hand immediately came up to cover his mouth and he felt dizzy. Their plan wasn’t going to work. They didn’t have time.
Hanna peered over his arm to read the message before also covering her mouth, attempting to hide a loud sob.
Sebastian brought her into his arms and tried his best to comfort his wife. His eyes were teary but he was holding it together.
“We are going to make sure she is ok. Lawrence is making sure of it. I will talk to him after this.”
Hanna nodded against his chest and leaned back to wipe her eyes before plastering a fake smile on her face. “Let’s go cheer on our girl.”
As Seb walked down to the podium ceremony hand in hand with Hanna, he felt a pair of eyes burning into his head. He looked around before catching Harry looking directly at him, a shameless smirk on his face. Seb balled his fists and Hanna looked over to where her husband was staring, noticing Harry too.
“It isn’t worth it, Liebchen, leave him for later.” With that, Seb turned around and kept on walking.
---
Lance had watched in real-time as his race had gone from near ending to a miraculous P2. And it was all thanks to you, the love of his life, his teammate, his best friend. As he pulled up in parc ferme, he couldn’t have jumped from his car any quicker, running over to you.
He knew that if he wasn’t high on adrenaline and full of love and respect for you that he would have just given you a sensible one armed hug and a helmet pat but he wasn’t thinking clearly. Or he was thinking clearly, for the first time in a long time. Because he ran over to you, lifting you up and spinning you around in circles, your giggles were more rewarding than any trophy he could receive.
“I love you, I love you, I love you.” Was all he could say as he placed you back on the ground, whispering into your helmet so that no one could overhear.
“We did it! I am so proud of you, Lance.” You had so much more to say but now wasn’t the time.
As if you were once again reading each other’s minds, you both ran and jumped into the team’s arms, hands patting backs and slapping helmets as they chanted your names on repeat.
The chants continued as you were the last to take your place on the podium. Before you got there though, you decided to do your iconic podium curtsy.
What had started as a continuation of taking back the ‘princess’ nickname had become a podium ritual, in the same way, Danny had his shoey. It had been lost though, like everything that brought you joy, when Harry came along. But now felt like as good of a time as any to reclaim it.
As you bow to your team, the roar of the crowd is deafening. However, as your anthem begins, it quietens down.
A tap on your arm pulls you from your thoughts and it is Lance giving you a friendly arm squeeze and smile as a way of saying ‘get out of your thoughts and enjoy this’. Before you can look away, Danny has his champagne and is spraying you both.
Had you been staring into Lance’s eyes… on the podium… the whole way through the anthem?
Oh no.
Oh well.
Lance had the same idea and both boys chased you around the podium, making sure that every single strand of hair on your head that was champagne-soaked. Once it all died down, Danny offered his shoe to you and you chuckled before strutting over to the barrier of the podium and placing a finger to your ear, just like Daniel usually did. Your team erupted with cheers and you placed the boot to your mouth, letting your other arm extend out to the side. Classic Daniel shoey pose. It was fun and your ribs hurt from laughing as you watched Lance try to not gag as he finished his shoey too.
Trophies were collected and photos were taken. It was straight off to the press conference.
---
“Well, welcome to the post-race press conference here at Suzuka, I am Tom Clarkson and I am joined by our three podium placed drivers today, well done to you all.” You all beamed at him as you sat perched on the couch. You had been able to grab a team shirt to replace your champagne soaked fire-proof and your manager had a brush and cap ready to cover what was now an sticky, knotted mess of a braid.
“Daniel I would like to start with you. You put up a hell of a fight today against the two Aston Martins but I am interested in your charge from P18 to P3. How did that feel?”
You smiled at Daniel who was sat to your right. You knew he wouldn’t usually be so happy with P3 but considering he didn’t know if he would even be driving this year, it was clear that he was rather chuffed. Especially after he was out of Q1 due to a power-unit issue.
“Yeah, look, P3 is always a little bitter-sweet but honestly, coming back from one of the worst qualifying sessions, with my power-unit issues and being stuck in the garage, I can genuinely say I am pleased with the work I was able to put in today and a massive props to these two today.”
He looked at you and then peered further down at Lance who was beaming just like he had when Danny had praised him on the podium back in 2017 at Baku. You’d been at that race as a rookie F2 driver, Charles had taken the win and you second but you had gotten to see your childhood bestfriend stand on the podium. You felt like a winner regardless.
“They were both so quick and honestly that move from you at the end. Bloody hell mate, get you on the pit wall.” He chuckled as he elbowed you gently, knowing that you were no doubt sore after that race. You were sure he was too.
“Thank you Daniel. Over to you Lance, for a while there it seemed like it may be a DNF for you today, rather than a podium place, talk us through that drive.” Tom had such a calm voice and his questions were always so fair, it was a gentle ease into the conference that was always filled with harsh questions from journalists in the latter half.
“Yeah! Ha! It was obvious we had the pace today, both of us were quick but we were both unfortunate victims of Max’s driving today. I won’t comment on that till I have seen the onboards but I know that our team has made an appeal against his driving today on the count of unsafe driving.”
Lance looked at you and smiled, nodding his head, checking if you were ok with his answer. You smiled back, you were.
“But yeah, I thought my race was over, my steering colum was bent which is the worst possible scenario at a wet Suzuka track but I knew I could hold it steady for 2 laps. Unfortunately you can’t do that if you have no power though.” Lance chuckled to himself. Many of the journalists also laughed along with him.
“This one saved me though, she defended me so selflessly and at the end, she gave me that tow that saved my race. I am so grateful, she is such a team player.” Lance leaned his fist over to you and gave you a fist bump.
“A question for both of you on that. We heard you come over the radio, P and tell you engineer to tell Lance TRS round 3. I quite enjoyed that message but tell us what it meant for those that don’t know.”
Lance looked to you and nodded his hesd, letting you explain the story. Danny was also leaning forward now to look at both of you, interested himself in the story.
“TRS stands for Toyota Racing Series which Lance and I both did together in 2015. We were teammates in M2 Competition but Lance and I had been teammates the year before in Fromula 4 so we were very used to working together on track. Anyway, during qualifying at Christchurch, one of us would come out at the right time to be able to drop behind the other and at the last turn, give each other a tow up the straight to the line. It annoyed everyone else greatly and their new quali challenge was to split us up but it worked pretty well for us. I actually had no idea if he would even know what I meant but he clearly did and we pulled it off again, some 8 years later.”
“I absolutely love it, very quick thinking on your part, P. You both are very close friends and have been teammates a total of 5 years between now and 2014 but we don’t often see you playing the teammate game, what changed today for you?”
You were speechless and you couldn’t come up with an answer that wasn’t ‘I am madly in love with this man’. You just slowly nodded which your brain raced to think of something but it was empty, every brain cell had been used in those 53 laps.
“I mean, just look at the standings man, she is 1st now and I am 4th, it was the least she could do to help me back, eh.” Lance’s contagious laugh filled the space and the journalists chuckled, surprisingly content with this answer. His Canadian accent was turned up to the max and he laughed along with Danny who never passed the opportunity ot get his pearly whites out.
“Exactly! When Max sent himself off into the gravel, I knew I was 1st in the championship and this team does mean the world to me, the points are important and he still let me cross the line first like a gentleman.” Tom nodded and laughed, moving on to another question for Danny before he opened up to the other journalists.
You smiled and laughed along with the jokes and questions for both yourself and the other two drivers, letting yourself enjoy this win and take it all in. You were safe in the press conference room.
“P, we have just heard from your fiance that your wedding date has been moved to next weekend so that you can spend the last 6 races focusing on the championship. How has planning a wedding and racing at the highest level been?”
You froze and for the first time you couldn’t hide your face. Your relationship with Harry had been a series of fake smiles and the practiced art of applying concealer but in this moment, you didn’t have the energy to hide anymore.
Your face dropped, your eyebrows furrowed slightly and you felt sick. Both Daniel and Lance had whipped their heads around to look at you. For a split second Lance was livid, he was angry at you for not telling him, there plan was ruined now but as he turned to you, he knew immediately that you didn’t have a clue.
You opened and closed your mouth like a fish before turning to look for your PR representative in the crowd behind the cameras. All she could do was nod sadly, confirming the journalist’s statement.
“I’m sorry” was all you could say before you shot out of your seat and ran to the side of the stage and out the exit door. Lance and Daniel were quick to follow you, saying good bye swiftly to everyone there who was left in stunned silence.
You pushed on a door but it was clearly locked, your vision was starting to go as you hyperventilated and you just wanted to disappear for a bit. The next door you tried was unlock and you pushed your body weight against it, falling to the ground as it gave way. You moved yourself into a corner and curled up. You were never escaping Harry no matter what happened.
“Lance, Lance wait! What is going on?” Daniel was following closely behind Lance as he started peering into rooms along the main F1 building corridor. Lance continued on, ignoring Daniel until he felt the Australian’s hand on his shoulders spinning him around as they entered a room.
“Mate, I can’t help if I don’t know what is going on!” Lance had always admired how oblivious Daniel was sometimes. He was empathetic and caring but he rarely picked up on the context clues to get there.
‘Ok, fine! Fine!” Lance shimmied Daniel’s hands off of him. “But only because I know you would and always will go to hell and back for her. You cannot tell a soul.” Lance gaze him a stern look, trying to signify the importance of his statement quickly so they could continue looking for you.
“Harry, Harry is a really bad guy. P doesn’t want to marry him but she is being forced.” Daniel’s face turned from one of shock to one of anger. His jaw gritted and his fists balled and the vein through his forehead stood out more and more.
“I am going to kill that fucking cunt.” He was dead serious. Daniel had grown up the youngest and like Charles, had adopted the younger sister mentality when you had met. He wasn’t opposed to violence either.
“Not now, trust me, I will be right there with you but first we need to make sure petal is ok.” Daniel nodded and they were off again.
---
As you sat there in the cleaning cupboard, your breathing unsteady and sight blurry, you begged the universe to give you Lance. You knew he would have followed you out of the conference and you knew you weren’t hiding from him, everyone but him.
Your tears fell, staining your deep green t-shirt. You just wanted him to hold you and tell you it would be alright.
The door swung open and through your blurry vision you saw him standing there looking down at you. “Lance,” you whispered as you extended your hand towards him, tears still running down your face.
He bent down in front of you and reached to wipe your tears away, except at the last moment, his fingers curled around your neck. “I saw everything and you are as good as dead, so is Lance Stroll.”
You’d know that voice anywhere. Your tears picked up again and your body shook from fear.
---
“Can anyone find her?” Charles said, curled up in one of the Aston Martin conference room chairs. He would have chuckled at being in the enemies camp if it wasn’t for the reason why.
“No, I have checked everywhere for her in hospitality and the garage. Even the cupboards.” Seb was at a loss for words, standing up and pacing through the space. Hanna was sitting near him, watching him walk around through her tearful eyes.
Esteban and Mick came back into the room, a downturned smile showing that they brought no news on your whereabouts. Daniel and Lance were next to return. Lance plopped down in one of the chairs, his hands over his face to hide the tears that were brimming.
“Guys! Guys, guys, guys!” The group could hear them before they saw them. Lando and Pierre smashing the door open and running in, Lando had his hands on his knees, steading his breathing, while Pierre was walking in a small circle, hands behind his head, sucking in air.
“We know… where… she is.” Lando puffed out while Pierre held up his phone for the group to take.
Thanks to the boys always being online and Pierre being a massive snoop, they had managed to find an article about you.
Tumblr media
The photo attached gave anyone little comfort. It showed Harry’s hand around your fore arm as you walked through the airport, your hoodie pulled up over your and sunglasses on. Lance knew what they were covering.
He stood up grabbing his water bottle and threw it at the ground as hard as he could, the bottle’s thick plastic cracking.
“Everyone sit.” Lawrence had walked in to the conference room in the Aston Martin hospitality and taken a seat, gesturing for everyone else to do the same.
He lay out all his plans on the table, trust being put completely in Mick, Esteban, Charles, Pierre, Lando and Daniel who were not part of his team but were in a way part of your team instead.
“Holy shit… they weren’t kidding when they said Aston Martin and James Bond went hand in hand.” Daniel sat back in his chair, trying to keep it light-hearted after Lawrence had explained what would be happening.
“Well I’m in.” Daniel raised his hand like some sort of oath and looked around the room. Everyone’s hands slowly rose up.
“I didn’t doubt for a second that any of you wouldn’t be.” Lawrence gave everyone a nod before standing and leaving the room, not before giving his son a massive hug.
