Easterbrook's History dates back more than 90 years, in 1926 Mable Easterbrook opened the original location as a tea house. Four years later she started selling hotdogs which is their main menu item. With names like Super Hoser, Phoney Coney and The Gasser, they are obviously Canadian and don't take themselves too seriously! Since their opening they claim to have sold more than 1600 miles worth of hotdogs and over 1 million pounds of ice cream!

The building was originally built as a Red Barn Restaurant which was a large fast food chain during the 60s and 70s. A lot of the former Red Barn buildings were converted into other fast food restaurants including this one, which was transformed sometime in the 80s.

The building was recently demolished. In the near future, the site will be replaced by condominiums as well as a retirement home.

Jokerz

Klingt erstmal nach gar nichts. Denkste!

Es ist sowas wie ein Wallfahrtsort für alpine Bergwanderer in Südtirol. Fast ehrfurchtsvoll wird es „Schloß in den Bergen“ genannt. Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass es in fast 2500 Metern Höhe liegt.

Aber was ist nun das besondere an der Hütte, die keine Hütte ist. Ich brings mal auf den Punkt: ein kleines architektonisches Wunderwerk in luftiger Höhe. Und dazu ein politischer Zankapfel sondersgleichen.

Doch fangen wir mal mit der Wanderung zum Schlern-Haus an. Die begann heut morgen in aller Früh (so gegen halb 9) nachdem uns die Wetter App eine solide Mischung aus Wolken und Sonne versprach. War auch so, wenngleich es in der Nacht wieder mal gegossen hatte wie selten zuvor.

Anfangs noch von italienischen Großfamilien umringt, so wurde es bald einsamer auf unserer Wanderung. Und wieder blühte und duftete es auf den Wiesen ringsumher, dass es eine Freude war. Links wiehern Haflinger auf der Bergwiese, rechts muht das Höhenfleckvieh. Werden wir anfangs noch von e Bikern überholt, ist bald Sense für sie: absolutes Fahrverbot. Geht eh nicht: wer will schon 25 Kilo senkrecht nach oben schleppen?

Na ja - und wie das so ist im Hochgebirge: irgendwann gehts zur Sache. Anderthalb bis zwei Stunden knackiger Anstieg sind gemeint. Je nachdem, wie unsereiner so drauf ist. Ich hatte heute den Tiger im Tank und zog los wie Schmidts Katze (nu hau mal nicht so auf den Putz). Aber ohne ist es nicht mit 12 Kilo auf der Schulter. Ein falscher Tritt - und Du kommst aus der Balance.

Ganz oben dann wurde es kalt und Wolken zogen unter dir vorbei. Naja und Schnee eben - zum Glück nur nebenan.

Da soll noch einer behaupten, dass es keinen guten Berggeist gibt. Hatte ich doch daheim die unteren Rosetten für meinen übrig gebliebenem Wander-Stab (der andere ist im Eimer) vergessen. Na und - heute hab ich gleich 2 gefunden. Und die passen auch noch.

So gegen zwei schlug ich am Schloss in den Bergen an- und lümmelte mich erst mal in die Sonne. Mit dem Gipfel-Bier wartete ich natürlich noch, bis der Karl eintraf. Gehört sich so. Zeit also, noch ein paar spannende Details zum Schlern-Haus zu erfahren.

Das wurde 1885 vom deutsch-österreichischen Alpenverein gebaut und immer wieder erweitert. Nach dem ersten Weltkrieg wurde es von Italien enteignet und übernommen. Seitdem gilt es als absoluter Zankapfel zwischen den Fronten der Italiener und der deutschsprachigen Südtiroler. Es gibt sogar ein boshaftes Bergsteigerlied. Das lass ich mal lieber außen vor. Eines noch: die Südtiroler boten Italien zwei Hütten (darunter die Regensburger) im Tausch gegen das Schloss in den Bergen an - was aber abgelehnt wurde.

Egal: seit 40 Jahren hat vor Ort Familie Gasser das Sagen - und es herrscht erstmal Ruhe. Aber eines muss ich zugeben: die Architektur innen ist ein Träumchen.

Thunder Road with Robert Mitchum is an interesting moment in car culture. For a good portion of American hotrod and muscle culture, the world really begins and ends with the cars of the mid 60s. This shows my own bias as a scholar of the period in auto design between 1965 and 1975 (my deep passion for the Corvair should be counted as an outlier) but a lot of the same biases are wider spread in the culture. This makes the snapshot in time of Thunder Road that much more interesting, as it shows us what a real hotrod was back then, from before Big Block Mopars were pushed as drag cars from the factory.

Thunder Road captures the often overlooked awkward post-war understanding of automobiles as appliances (we can use the old molds, right?) and the crossover with the newly found appreciation for speed of a Wartime generation that spent the war years building, maintaining, repairing and abusing machinery built to go fast-- the mustang was allegedly named after the airplane, not the horse, after all.

As Noirs go, it was decent. Mitchum plays a beautiful tough guy, and the casting of his younger brother to play his character’s younger brother was quite good. I can definitely see some of the themes of familial ties, protectiveness, honor, and general scofflaw philosophies that would later make their way into lighter fair such as Smokey and the Bandit and the Dukes of Hazzard. As a Noir itself, the setting is probably one of the more intering ones I’ve seen for a standard Noir. The script was overall pretty tight and the film was lean and efficient, at least for the most part. Plus, who isn’t down for a moonshine narrative?

An interesting factoid about the film is the Springsteen song of the same name was based on the movie, despite Springsteen never having actually seen the film. Rather, he thought the poster looked cool and wrote the song about that.

We get to see Don Patch inflated one last time in an anime-only part of him jumping out of the toilet thanks to Bobobo’s bait, rushing forward so fast you could blink and miss it. His body is so large his facial features appear minuscule, a good way to show how big his already ball-shaped form’s gotten. (Pic 5)

Then there’s the manga panel recreation of the shit featuring all characters with Gasser and Dengukuman still inside. (Pic 6) When Bobobo falls, the shot of Dengukumon is different; it’s him facing upwards and getting closer, basically from Bobobo’s perspective, and leads to the same, face-kicking result. Mad Gasser (F-01-111) HE

“A mad man still fighting for a long Forgotten War” Mad Gasser (F-01-111) is an Abnormality with the appearance of a tall man or woman in a military uniform and a gas mask. Upon its back is a gas canister with two nozzles that move on their own. When it Breaches it has 500 HP and it will fill the room it is in with toxic gas which will only dissipate one it leaves.The Gas Slowly does Red 2-3 and slows down the employees. When it is attacked it will spray a large amount of toxic gas (Red 20-25) in the face of one of the employees with a cool down before it’s next attack. Upon being suppressed, all its clothes will drop to the floor. It is based off the Mad Gasser of Matton
