Many films aspire to be Terry Gilliam movies, and many fail. Wonka is just the latest film to do so.
The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is renowned for getting genuine first look reactions out of the cast by leading them in blind to the big reveal of the Factory's technicolor candy paradise. The cast reacted with delight and surprise at seeing the vibrant set for the first time. In my mind this is the only explanation I can think of for why Wonka, the 2023 prequel/origin story, would hide the fact that this movie is a musical, only to severely backpedal in its marketing once audience reactions aren't as delighted as expected.
The thing about Wonka is that much of the conversation around it lies in analysis of why modern Musicals are somehow ashamed of their musicality and are hiding in, and not about how the musicality of Wonka doesn't matter if all the songs are completely forgettable. I tried to think back to how any of the songs in the movie went and my mind drew a complete blank. From what I remember they weren't even bad. Just wholly unremarkable. Which is what the movie really is.
The thing is that Wonka isn't an unsalvageable film either. Unlike a majority of cashgrab franchise-bait films, the script is desperately trying to be a Terry Gilliam film despite being written and directed by the Paddington guys. I see the virtue in it, and even as it falls short of "good" for me. It's like Timothee Chalamet's performance in the film itself: Putting all the work in to be convincingly fresh and weird, and yet somehow coming off as unconvincing despite the novelty it presents.
Still a perfectly serviceable film to go see with a younger member of your extended family who you don't talk with much. Which is the purpose of almost every movie released between Thanksgiving and Christmas. You still won't remember any of the songs though.

We should probably be grateful that Drake is at best manufactured pop drivel rather than an intellectual match for Kendrick because otherwise I would've spent summer 2015 dodging Top 40 constant repeats of terrible beats over which would be deployed the phrase "Imago Bae"
