An Attic Black-figured Siana Cup Attributed to the Taras Painter, the tondo perhaps by the Malibu painter, circa 560-550 B.C.
Each sided painted with two striding panthers alternating with two grazing deer, a vine of ivy leaves encircling the rim, the tondo decorated with a warrior running vigorously to right, wearing a Phrygian helmet, and holding a sword and shield, a scabbard at his side and baldric across his chest, the details in added red, a black-painted prong and encircling band underneath the foot. Diameter 25.1 cm.
The Taras Painter was a close colleague of the Malibu Painter and that “it seems that they also potted cups which the other one decorated, as can be inferred  from the tondo of this cup. The style of painting and drawing is so close to that of the Malibu Painter that it is difficult to decide whether the warrior was depicted by that painter or by the Taras Painter in imitation of his colleague.

John followed behind Joseph as he left the room, pausing in the hall and gently shutting the door behind himself.  Sighing heavily, he could hear the impatience in Joseph’s voice as subtle as it was. The light in his eyes dimming once more, nothing but a glassy emptiness reflecting back whatever Joseph wanted him to be. A mask like all his others, his only defense to soothe the pain. To push it down, so far down that no one will ever find it if they don’t already know it exists
Lyrics under cut
Gone Too Soon
Today could have been the day
That you'd blow out your candles
Make a wish as you closed your eyes
Today could have been the day
Everybody was laughing
Instead I just sit here and cry
Who would you be?
What would you look like
When you looked at me for the very first time?
Today could have been the next day of the rest of your life
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you
I'm always asking why this crazy world had to lose
Such a ray of light, we never knew
Gone too soon yeah, yeah, yeah
Would you have been president?
Or a painter, an author
Who sang like your mother
One thing is evident
Would have given all I had
Would have loved you like no other
Who would you be?
What would you look like?
Would you have my smile and her eyes?
Today could have been the next day of the rest of your life
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you
I'm always asking why this crazy world had to lose
Such a ray of light, we never knew
Gone too soon yeah, yeah, yeah
Not a day goes by
I'm always asking why
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you
I'm always asking why this crazy world had to lose
Such a beautiful light, we never knew
Gone too soon
You were gone too soon
Not a day goes by
That I don't think of you
One More Day
Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for one more day with you!
One more day, one more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again, I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you
One more day
First thing I'd do is pray for time to crawl
I'd unplug the telephone and keep the t.v off
I'd hold you every second
Say a million I love you's
That's what I'd do with one more day with you
One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you
One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you.

Scythian warrior by The Berlin Painter 480-470 BCE
"Condition: Restored from fragments with numerous losses; greater part of neck on side A reconstructed; breaks in places retouched, but figure work largely free of in-painting; gap through middle of warrior on side A clearly visible.
H. 47 cm.; Diam. (of mouth) 18.9 cm.; Diam. (of foot) 13.5 cm.
The body of this vase is entirely black except for two figures that "float" without ground lines. A lunging hoplite is depicted on side A (not seen here), in greaves, cuirass, and a puched-back Corinthian helmet. On his left arm he holds out a large round shield, over which is draped a shield apron. Side B (seen here) presents a Scythian fleeing to our right, glancing anxiously over his shoulder. He is bedecked in typical Scythian costume--a tall cap that extends onto his shoulders with flaps at the back and sides of the neck, and tight, patterned garments: a long-sleeved jacket worn over a shirt, long leggings, and a short cloth with a separate front panel worn like a loincloth. On his feet are soft pointed shoes fastened with laces. In his left hand he holds out a bow. A machaira is in his right hand, and attached to his waist is a gorytos (the combined quiver and bow-case used by peoples to the north and east of Greece). The long red beard and snub-nosed physiognomy characterize this figure as un-Greek in contrast to the hoplite on side A. For an interesting link between the Greek view of the half-human and the barbarian, one can compare here the elderly komast on side B of the Berlin Painter's neck amphora in the Getty Museum (86.AE.187) and the bearded komast on side A of the neck amphora in London (E266); both works are early in the painter's career, as is the Fleischman vase. Also similar are the facial features of the satyrs on the artist's name piece in Berlin and on his Munich panathenaic amphora.
In contrast to the scenes on black-figured vases, this illustration may be a reference to the Greek triumph over the Persians in 479 B.C.E., a recent event when this vase was painted. The Scythians, a more northern people, were allied to the Persians during that invasion.
Erratic relief contours are more extensive on side A of this vase. A lightly incised preliminary sketch is clearly visible. Dilute glaze was used for many details throughout, while added red was used sparingly: for the ties securing the ends of the warriors shoulder flaps, for the quiver harness encircling the barbarian's waist, and for the forward edge of his cap. Under the foot there is a graffito in Attic script ON, possibly a price inscription.
Formerly in the collection of Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman; text from the catalogue of their collection.
From the collection of the Getty Villa, Malibu, California."

Anyway because I’m insane I started collecting these little princess dolls (cheap and don’t take up a lot of space) and decided that the honorary princesses needed dolls too, so… I’m painting them. I’m not a great painter but I’m enjoying myself. Here’s a current picture of all the dolls I have at college. Some of the minis I bought and found out were from slightly different lines, but oh well.
At home I have a NYC Barbie in a relationship with a Malibu Barbie (neither have hair ofc they’re old) and a Wonder Woman dating my Captain America. Malibu Barbie and CA had the Kit (mini American girl doll in the Barbie dress way in the back) but then divorced peacefully. But they don’t need painting so they stayed back there.
Kit came because she’s the princesses’ friend. I also acquired a Halle Ariel* and a Raya (Hariel needed an adult friend and Raya was on sale) while here but that’s it!!! No more. Raya is way in the back and Hariel is sitting in front of her because her legs are easier to move.
*Halle Bailey’s Ariel is Hariel, and Jodi Benson’s is Jariel
Mostly rambles and a couple more pics in greater detail under the cut. I did some work on them a while back and I feel like showing off now lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So! Some of these are modded heavily, and a couple weren’t super visible in the picture above, and I just now decided to switch the bodies on two of them. Oh well! I just wish I still had the before pictures (phone broke and memory wasn’t saved sadly).
I tried to match up hair textures and lengths when possible (had to fudge it a bit with Mirabel, because the closest other doll that kind of matched was a Merida, and I had to order her separately, while the other dolls were quite cheap), but the bodies, I couldn’t do as much. I just tried to match the form of the dress as much as possible. Off the shoulder dresses with off the shoulder dresses, etc. Some of them, I’m just going to paint ‘empty space’ over the body do the dress to match the silhouette or features more correctly.
Now to describe the princesses!
1. First off we have Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron. She has a young Blue dress Elsa body & head (Belsa). I melted the braid and added some hot glue, and Eilonwy had a headband anyway. Her head is done, I didn’t have to do much anyway because Eilonwy is similar to Elsa in terms of eye and hair and skin shades.
2. Second we have Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I tried editing her hair for a different girl but ultimately decided against it. Her head is pretty much done, just need to do body and jewelry now. She has an Ariel head and body. She’s my favorite 90s unofficial princess by far. I added her headband ‘tail’ via hot glue. I may have to paint it more.
3. Third is Isabela from Encanto. I tried giving her nose an arch with hot glue, with playing results. I might change it later, but not today! Otherwise, her head is done. She has a Rapunzel body and a loose-haired white outfit Elsa head (Welsa). Originally, that head was going to be used for Raya, and then I stumbled upon a Raya doll!
4. Fourth is Hariel from the new The Little Mermaid, whose hair I had the most fun painting. I did a bunch of layers of different reds, with a layer or two of pink and orange. I gave her a blue flower, and I think I may need to give her headband another coat, but she’s pretty much ready for body work! She’s Moana head & body.
5. Fifth is Vanellope from Wreck It Ralph. She has a Blue dress Anna head (Banna) whose braids I cut off and replaced with a ponytail created by hot glue (it’s bad but not that bad). She’s not a particular favorite, but she did meet a bunch of the princesses, which I love thinking about, and she’s a princess. So yeah. She’s one of the dolls whose bodies will be switched. Right now her head is done and she’s pictured with a Kristoff body, but I’m going to switch that with Namaari’s current body, that of Anna’s purple overcoat-dress (Panna), because I think having actual pants would be more important on the Namaari doll than the Vanellope doll. And I originally had it like that anyway. I’ll have to wash off some of the paint. I cut off the shoulder and mitten ruffles, and thankfully that’ll fit in with Namaari well.
6. I didn’t plan it this way but the sixth doll is Namaari from Raya and the Last Dragon. Her head was…. A ton of work. So because I knew she had short hair and no other princess head was going to match with that, I bought a kristoff doll for her body and head. I tried melting the hair all to one side to give her that fringe, but it didn’t super work. So I recreated it with hot glue! I shaved off some of the eye bulge - all the Kristoff head have an eye bulge that isn’t flattering. I also cut down on the cheeks a little, because Namaari doesn’t really have that face shape: she is currently pictured with a Panna body (see above) but she will have a Kristoff body (now I need to paint the skin lol.) And I need to paint her jewelry.
7. Number 7 is Dolores from Encanto. She also has an old Kristoff head, because the ears were way more pronounced, which fit with her power. I burned her head smooth and also cut down on the cheeks and eyes some. Her hair bun is stolen from the Tiana doll, because Tiana is a one bun girl but they gave her two! So I cut both off, reaffixed one to the middle of her head and gave the other to Dolores. I added her bow via hot glue bulges, and her body is Belle: I just have to paint the dress now!
8. Eighth up is Asha, from Wish! I haven’t seen ANY dolls out for her yet, only costumes, so I think in a way, I kind of have her first doll! She has a Moana head, and her freckles came out a little wonky but ultimately cute. Again, I didn’t feel like cutting off the flower that comes with the Moana head, so I painted it a different color - it’s yellow, so that I have all three primary colors for the flowers and because it should contrast nicely with her dress with I paint it. She has a Welsa body, as the silhouette isn’t too different from what’s been shown so far in trailers.
9. Ninth is Mirabel from Encanto! Considering I don’t know what I’m doing, I think her glasses came out decently! She has a Belle body and head. I’m still considering cutting off the middle of her hair and reattaching the ends close to her head, so that it’s short and more curly looking. We’ll see. After that, it would just be the dress - which has a more scooped neck thing going on, similar to her actual dress.
10. Now Tenth is Luisa from Encanto! She has a Cinderella head and body (for the ponytail and shoulder poofs, respectively) and I gave her muscles by connecting her shoulder puffs to her arms and making biceps via hot glue. She just needs her hair tie and dress done.
11. Eleventh is Sisu from Raya and the Last Dragon. Her hair took forever to turn white, despite starting out blonde, but it was fun when I added the blue and purple streaks. She has a Rapunzel head (bangs and length worked out nice) and a kristoff body - her pants are important. Thank god I’m done with her head. I cut off the mitten ruffles on the arms.
12. Twelfth is Kida from Atlantis. I’m the closest to being done with her! She has an Aurora head (basically a last head left that had the right length hair sort of thing) and a Moana body. I added her middle sash thing via hot glue, and I just have to finish adding color to that and detail to her skirt and her jewelry, and she’ll be done! I had a ton of fun with her - I even gave her a different color mascara, dark blue, because the closeups of her face in the movie have her eyelashes as dark blue. I think she’s turning out super well.
13. Thirteenth (<3) is Sofia from Sofia the First. I’m not super attached to her, but I do think she counts. I forgot her lips whoops. But after that it’s just her dress and I’m good! She has a Belle head (no hair painting thank god) and a Cinderella body (it was the last ball gown left sort of thing).
14. Fourteenth Is Gabriella, the Deaf mermaid based on a fan from the Jariel Little Mermaid series. Idk why, but when I was little, my cousins and I often watched this dvd of a select few episodes from the various 90s tv shows for the Disney princesses, and my favorite was the one with Gabriella and the wishing star. I’ve only seen a few other episodes since, but I think I can confidently say it’s still my favorite. This one I’ve been especially excited to work on. She has a Snow White* head and body (I cut off SW’s high collar) and I’m going to design her (it’s probably going to be simple but still) a dress based on her mermaid tail. I did a lot of color layering for her hair, partly because it started with a black base which is iffy to paint over, and I love it! It’s brown with a lot of crimson. Anyway, I consider her an honorary princess because she’s Ariel’s friend and I love her. And I think she’s turning out great! Head is done, just need to do body now.
*I briefly considered this head for Mirabel, but decided it fit Gabriella better, and I’m satisfied.
15. Fifteenth is Giselle. Her character was supposed to become a Disney princess, but Disney tried to stiff the actress and then backed out of that end of the branding to punish her. That plus me liking the movie means I’m including her. She has a Panna head an Aurora body (because I’m doing her initial Pink dress with the low shoulders, which I love.) I forgot she had flowers and stuff in her hair until just now, so I’ll add those and finish up there dress later.
16. Sixteenth and last of the edited princesses is Melody from the Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea. She’s Jariel’s daughter, and totally counts as a Disney Princess imho, because she’s the only canon child of an official one, she’s from one of the few good Disney sequels, and I love her. She gets a Cinderella head, because of the ponytail, and a Banna body, because I ran out of kristoff bodies and this dress is big enough I could paint her pants onto it. She should just need her body done now.
NOW! To show them off in order from the original picture. (I put oldest movie ones in the back, newest in the front. I also tried to arrange the ones I’m working on like this, so it goes from Eilonwy to Asha in terms of the dolls lying down. If there are multiple characters from the same movie, it goes in order of appearance)(the animals are scattered about and are not put in order). Now please, go left to right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the very very very light pink circle, we have Adult (Big) Raya, Kit, a fallen over Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Jariel, Belle.
In the orange circle: Adult (Big) Hariel, Eilonwy, Gabriella, Esmeralda, Melody, Olaf
In the yellow circle: Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel
In the green circle: Kida and Giselle
In the blue circle: Merida, Amber*, Kristoff , Elsa, Anna, Sven, Elena**, Moana***, Raya
In the purple circle: Vanellope, Sofia, Namaari, Sisu, Mirabel
In the last picture, because they didn’t all fit on that shelf: Dolores, Isabela, Luisa, Hariel (little) & Asha
*she came with a couple others dolls, she’s Sofia’s stepsister from Sofia the First. I figured I might as well keep her, and she has a wide base, which is nice for standing up.
**Elena is kind of from a spin-off of Sofia the first called Elena of Avalor, and the doll doesn’t do her very good justice, but she’s basically a princess and she at least had a doll from the same line as the others.
***I found this Moana with white paint freckles, likely as a misprint situation, at the store. And I love that she’s a rare Moana in because of her unusual appearance so I’m keeping her like that :)

This series of images show unstretched canvases and textile art. Cali has been painting on unstretched canvas, and has expressed an interest in presenting these works in that form. Unstretched paintings are very material-forward in that we are forced to see them, first and foremost, as objects hanging on the wall (as opposed to windows opening onto a scene). Here are a few examples, beginning with Minimalist painter Robert Ryman’s tiny, barebones work of brush marks on rough, unsized canvas, displayed inside of a protective frame. Richard Tuttle’s Cloth Octagonal is something else entirely, a shaped soft object dyed green and attached to the wall with nails or pins. Mary Heilmann may have been inspired by Tuttle’s work, but her work feels more like a painting in its materials and rectangular shape. Heilmann’s later canvases are stretched in the conventional manner.
Richard Hambleton was a graffiti artist, in the 1980s, whose “Shadowman” figures appeared on walls of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His work made the jump to galleries along with that of the better known Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Carole Harris is a textile artist; it has long been the norm to display tapestries and weavings by simply hanging them. The last artist, Michael Luchs, was deeply concerned with surfaces and textures; his paintings have a fragility that requires some sort of support, but using a stretcher or conventional frame would seem to be out of the question. Mounting them on painted plywood, as seen here, allows the viewer direct, unimpeded access to his layered, painted, hole-punched surface, along with rough details such as the dangling yarn of his unravelling canvas.

⌠ quintessa swindell. 25, pansexual, nonbinary, they/he. ⌡ wait a minute, is lake wright townsend still in town? i thought i saw a flash of (motorcycle boots, being the first one in the surf line up, and a vintage les paul strummed between breaks in paint strokes)! last i heard they were working as a(n) mechanic/artist nearby. when it’s the (aquarius)’ birthday on 01/07 i forget that they’re aloof and celebrate that they’re creative. i hear boys and girls by jaden every time i think of them.
»  lake wright townsend  «
lake townsend ( birth name to forever be unknown ) is a success story told by two white, wealthy californian artists that had found love and the desire to be parents too late, ultimately adopting lake and giving her a life that they wouldn’t have known without them.
lake didn’t know moments of wanting to know their birth parents, having put the thought out of their mind entirely due to the simple fact that they always felt like they BELONGED— a less than easy task for a baby found abandoned at a fire station, for a person of color learning and growing in a white community, for someone who’s always known and practiced fluid sexuality. somehow this has been lake’s story of finding belonging no matter where they are with the support of their loving, overly empathetic and understanding parents that rarely projected their own toxicity.
»  the california girl  «
for the first ten years of life, lake grew up in the canyons of los angeles that attract artists, musicians, writers, actors, and folks representing an astounding variety of spiritual pursuits, including their family.
the townsends lived in topanga canyon, california, where there is a remarkable concentration of creative energy shot through with a general sense of good vibes. this looked like wild, wide-open spaces; enforced solitude; and an atmosphere that teeters between insular and inspiring.
it was very important to the people there that they respect nature and not try to change the small, creative community that thrived there, amongst the trees.
whenever lake came to learn about the green monster that goes with attending to school with malibu’s elite, their parents reminded them that they were not one of the designer beach town inhabitants. “don’t try to change topanga,” they would tell them when lake wished it was more like where their friends lived in malibu, “let topanga change you.”
a bottomless well of privilege, however. struggling artists still struggle. your average poet or painter is going to have a tough time scraping together the bread to buy in topanga, a market where median prices are in the millions.
when lake was on the verge of their eleventh birthday, jobs, money, things that eleven year old could never understand, had their family uprooted across the country to the suburbs of pennsylvania.
topanga canyon was like an aging hippie that refused to wash off its natural character, harboring the same famous aesthetic it held in the seventies and before. similarly, lake refused to wash off the parts of malibu and topanga that shaped them, even if it meant standing out in centralia.
and as fate would have it, lake learned that they loved to stand out.
having dreams of driving a motorcycle along the coast of pacific coast highway toward a morning surf gave lake a vision to aspire toward. of course, they had to start with the family car, but they took care of it to prove responsible enough for something of their own . until then their surfboard would be the most important thing lake takes out for a ride.
»  centralia  «
there was a certain learning curve that came with being the new kid, but lake’s outgoing personality, sense of style, and creativity had them making friends in no time.
most friendships made were lost over time, lake being the type to jump around from friend group to friend group, finding whatever mold fit them best at the time.
while doodling in notebook margins all day, lake daydreamed about working on vintage cars with their dad after school.
post high school they tried to live and work in philadelphia as an artist, but the city life proved not to be for them.
after a while they made their way back to centralia. it was no california, but it was a closer life to the one they idolized in their mind growing up.
in the evenings and sometimes the late nights into early mornings, lake is painting their colorful mind onto a canvas in hopes of fulfilling the same dream as all those left in topanga canyon: making a sustainable living, perhaps even a luxurious one, from their art.
in the mean time they are simply trying to catch some sleep between art pieces, surf sessions, and working at the garage.
»  personality  «
lake is both an empath cry baby and a feminist that takes zero shit, stands up for others, and uses their voice as needed.
the person lake loves most in this world is themself and they has no shame in it, having been raised with the idea that they would fall apart if they ever let self-love slip from their grasps.
they have solid posture that commands a room. when sitting, they are often ‘ man - spreading ’ to practice taking up space rather than make themself small.
»  wanted connections  «
past high school friends/acquaintances.
art friends.
best friend, confidante, partner in crime.
flirtationship.
love affair.
friends with benefits.
friends that call them out on their shit.
friends that they would die for.
unrequited crush.

On a Statue of Capaneus
Anthologia Planudea 106 (author and date unknown)
Note: in Greek mythology, Capaneus was one of the seven chieftains who attacked Thebes in support of Polynices’ claim to the throne. As he was about to storm the citadel by means of a ladder, he shouted that Zeus himself would not stop him from taking the city. This earned him a swift death by lightning bolt. Dante, in the Inferno, places Capaneus in the seventh circle of Hell as a blasphemer. If such a Capaneus had raged against the towers of Thebes, Having contrived an ascent into the air with a ladder, He would have seized the citadel by force, Fate notwithstanding – For even Zeus’ bolt would have scrupled to cut down such a fighter.

Tooning in 7. Craig Clark part 1 of 7
Tumblr media
DL : Who are you and what are you best know for?
CC : I'm Craig Clark, LA local freelance animator. Mostly know for The Kustomonsters TV and Movie series, The Simpsons OG crew, and Forest Gump JFK animation at ILM.
DL : So, growing up, how was your childhood?
CC : Awesome! I was born in Santa Monica and later moved to Malibu. I had an ideal beach city based childhood as a minority kid. Lots of TV, skateboards and football.
DL : So What made you wanna get into animation?
CC : A steady diet of classic LA TV cartoon reruns. I started out as a child actor at age 8. I did one educational film directed by cartoon voice actor Shep Menkin. I later switched to animation at age 14, where I mentored at Duck Soup Produckions in Santa Monica.
DL : So did you have Preston Blair's How to Draw Animated Cartoons book?
CC : Yes! Yes, I picked that ups at the Santa Monica air store, Mittels. Got them both. I use It as a text book while teaching my animation classes at Santa Monica College.
He shows me a video with porky pig on how to animate on a musical beat
DL : Well, that book is such a great help! I have it at home. I mean, the way he shows how to walk cycles and character movement is purely genius!
CC : I agree. Here's that Shep Mention movie I did in 1968. https://youtu.be/u3qiLTp64Bo?si=1xdyuqAESw0F6srT
youtube
DL : I'm watching the short Right Now.
CC : cool!
DL : So I got the basic gist of the short, YOU want to go help the chickens as the other boy promised you but he changes his mind at the last second.
CC : Yes, It was a tough time in 1968, the story was needed for the kids...I guess. I had an agent from 1970- 1972, no work,  Only two black boy actors were working then, George Spell and Marc Copage (Julia TV show), so I went to animation, lol.
DL : So, how was working on the Film as a child actor? Were you payed? Was a grown up with you? Did you get a 30 minute break every 1 hour?
CC : Yes I was paid $55, which was a lot for an 8 year old kid in 1968. I bought my very first 45 record, "Here Come the Judge" by Shorty Long. Yeah I got lots of breaks. We shot in Santa Monica at my school John Muir, Hollywood, and Malibu.
DL : Ah, do you royalties from the film?
Sends me a video of the song “Here Comes the Judge” by Shorty Long
CC : No royalties, it was an educational non union film. Funny Shep later did voices on some Charlie Brown specials I animated on. I did not know at the time.
DL : So, ironic! So how was your high school years?
CC : I went to Santa Monica high school. We all rode the bus from Malibu. I played on the football team and studied art. We had great teachers from SM College teaching us, they were very exacting and inspiring. I was already doing animation tests at Duck Soup Studio on the side.
DL : Ah, so how did you get into animation?
CC : At age 14 I used to help my mom's first grade class by teaching the kids how to draw cartoons. One of the kid's dad was an animator who was working with Corny Cole. Corny brought his just finished Flip Wilson special to the class and showed a 16mm print. Later Corny invited me to Duck Soup Studios in Santa Monica by the beach. They studio offered me a mentorship by doing tests, they would film the tests on the tail end of there commercial reels and give me pointers. I later worked there for five years while going to college on summer breaks Upon graduation I've been freelancing ever since.
Duck Soup spot....https://youtu.be/ZmoMCnzXTkY?si=M3dXoeZWKGVrBvzs
youtube
He sends me a 1980 commercial for 9 Lives cat food featuring Sylvester the cat.
Directed by Duane Crowther, Layouts Corny Cole, Animation Abby Paliwoda, Jeff Howard, Backgrounds Toby Bluth, Animation asst. me
DL : WAIT! Don Bluth's BROTHER did background design!
CC : Yes, He also directed Babes in Toyland for MGM. The Bluths went to Santa Monica High School as well.
DL : Yeah, knew that! Shame he died in 2013.
CC : We was a great painter......master at watercolor. His nephew Colby is a friend of mine and does great watercolors as well. Colby did the bg for this quick Fosters Freeze spot I animated. https://youtu.be/7dYpT-dY60s?si=HAN3xSv148-6e99s
youtube
He sends me a commercial for Foster’s Freeze’s Ice Cream which he and Colby Bluth worked together on.
DL : COOL! So what apart did you animated on the Sylvester 9 Lives ad?
CC : I assisted on the Sylvester stuff behind Amby. I was 19 years old just starting. We later worked together just the two of us on Tony the Tiger spots... https://youtu.be/zLrvjgwTpLk?si=g9Lgm65QZ86QKa-Z
youtube
He sends me a commercial for The vain of my existence, Frosted Flakes Banana Flavor which he and Amby worked together on.
DL : Smooth Animation for the time, when Hanna Barbera and Filmation was shoveling cheap looking stuff.
CC : thanks!
DL : How did you felt about the animation Industry at that point, in the 1970s to the early part of the 80s?
CC : I wanted to stay doing fully animated commercais, and maybe some feature work, but the work was spotty. I did not want to do Saturday morning. I loved many of their concepts but a lot of it was really crappy. I liked what Bakshi was doing and some of the indie features. I could never get into Disney, but many of my assistants did for some reason. So I just figured I would be an independent animator and be part of that scene. There was an off the lot Westside LA Disney incubator division were projects like Tron, Roger Rabbit, and Brave Little Toaster came from. I was part of that. Projects Brought from outside the studio into the lot, mostly during the Tom Wilhite era. When MGM was still happening in Culver City, we had a great film lab and several studios here on the westside in the 70s -80s. MGM, Fox, Boss Film, Dream Quest, Duck Soup, Tigerfly, West Indigo,... it was cracking.
DL : So, how was the environment at Duck Soup?
CC : It was a family, very creative , and with tip top talent. Very inspiring
DL : Any stories at the studio?
CC : yup. I met Grim Natwick at the studio back in 1974 when I was 14. I had no idea he was the creator of Betty Boop at the time. I would have asked him about Louis Armstrong. Later I found out that my grandmother used to cook for Louis Armstrong in the 30's on Fridays. He returned to New Orleans from his Cotton Club West residency in Culver City, he later took his band to New York to do a Betty Boop cartoon. Grim probably met him but I did not know at the time.  The Duck Soup logo has a real 30's rubber hose vibe to it, so there is a connection.  I think the TV show Duck Factory was inspired by it. When I worked there there were 4 directors, Duane Crowther, Roger Choinard, Randy Akers, and Frank Terry... all master designers and animators. https://youtu.be/wVzJVa_EHQs?si=Ku1sSTcE9XtRxFSE
youtube
He sends me the theme song to 1984 NBC sitcom, The Duck Factory.
DL : So You were at Spungbuggy Works in 1981. You were assistant  animator on a Superman hot cocoa ad.
CC : Yes
DL : But you were still at Duck Soup, how was that? Did you had a contract with Duck Soup?
CC : No, it was all freelance. 30 second commercials are all Donne in 8 weeks, you go back and forth to different studios. animators and directors too. Superman spot was Bill Kroyer director.
DL : I thought it was Richard Williams.
CC : No.
I send him the Superman Anti-Smoking PSAs animated at Richard Williams studios.
youtube
Even Gabor Csupo worked at Spungbuggy on Dutchboys paint. Williams had their own studio in the valley, they worked directly on cell ...no paper. I never worked there though.
DL : Wait? Dick was in LA? I thought he was still in  London? When did he start up a LA division?
CC : He had a studio on Cahenga  as well as London early 80's. Barbara Cimity was the producer....she is at Six Point now. Williams had just finished Raggedy Ann.
DL : Well, that's something I thought i'll never hear of today.
CC : Yes.
DL : So how was that studio?
CC : Richard was trying to finish the Thief and the Cobbler on the side.....There was and animator at Filmfair working on it in the ink and paint department in the 80's. I never worked at Williams, but I did take his class in San Francisco in the 90's.
DL : Thought he taught only in Vancouver as he moved there in ‘95?
CC : He was flying around teaching classes before he released his book. They were 3 day classes....excellent.
DL : Well back to the question, how was was Spungbuggy Works!
CC : I was fun! Corny and Frank Terry directed there a lot. There was a good relationship with Duck Soup, they had completely different clients. Spungbuggy got a lot of the Post cereal stuff, Duck Soup was Kellogs. Spungbuggy had a lot of the Raid bugs stuff, that was cool. They were on Sunset Blvd on the strip, they had more of a Hollywood hipster vibe like Jay Ward. Duck Soup was more beachy 30's - 40's retro. Spugbuggy also did a lot of Live Action, with fun casting calls. Rows of folks all looking the same...
DL : Any stories on Spugbuggy?
CC : My 1969 Volkswagen square back trying to make the left hand turn into the parking lot on a 45 percent grade on La Cienega Blvd.....that's what I remember. lol. I also worked there summer and winter breaks while in college. They would try a lot of strange techniques like painting water colors right on the cels. It gave it a really funky look, like Hubley films or something. I first woke with Gabor Csupo there on a Dutch Boy paints spot. Upon graduation I would be his six employee in his home studio. Later I worked for him starting up the Simpsons TV show, and after that he had a studio, Klask Csupo emplying over 500 people...
DL : Gabor at this time was just a assistant animator who was already a professional animator from Hungary. Which I think he was laid off from Hanna Barbera at this time, As that studio was sending more stuff to Wang Film in Taiwan.
CC : Spugbuggy era https://youtu.be/QCmEUyTZ7Tk?si=fOY5Iu01sGApyItp
youtube
He sends me a commercial for Golden Crisps he and Csupo worked on for Spugbuggy.
correct about HB.
DL : Yeah I talk to Greg Bailey about this, He was among the foreigners who were at the studio in the 1979 season. He said that Bill would tell them to marry an american because he wasn't going to keep them employed for longer. Glad Gabor married Arlene!
CC : haha. Yeah! They also had a studio dog named Stocky who would lick your elbow while you were working. Gabor was a good businessman.
DL : So You worked at Filmfair right?
CC : Yes. Frank Terry was there too. They did animation and Live Action and actually had a little stage. Donkey Kong, Keeblers Cookies, and the Al Jeareau video were their highlights. I wore a suit to the interview, they said they would hire me if I never wear that suit to work. lol.
DL : Can you answer this question? WHO the HELL is GUS JEKEL?
CC : He owned the place. they hade other studios in London and New York I think.
DL : I can't find anything on this man! On Wikipedia, it said that he used to work at Disney, but his IMDB has diddly squat about that!
CC : He was a producer. Actually Swinton Scott worked there with me at the same time. He might know more. The late Rusty Mills was there too with me. They always had a lot of work over there, but I think they had a lot of overhead with that huge building. There were a lot of annexes, expanding and contracting all the time. I likes seeing the Keeblers Elves miniature sets, that was cool.
DL : SO guess what? the UK division is more well known than the US one. They produced Paddington Bear, Simon and the Land of Chalk Drawings, The Herbs, The Wombles, etc
CC : Wow!
DL : You ever knew or watch these programs?
CC : Paddington yes. cute show.
DL : Simon was on Captain Kangaroo.
CC : Hey, alright
