Lotiform Chalice Third Intermediate Period Ca. 945–664 B.C. From Middle Egypt, Tuna el-Gebel region; From Egypt.
The fragrant blossom of the blue lotus is a common motif in all forms of Egyptian art. Because it opened its petals to the sun each morning, the flower became a symbol of creation and rebirth. During the Third Intermediate Period, faience chalices derived from the shape of the blossom and other faience delicacies were decorated with relief scenes evoking a constellation of myths having to do with the birth of the king as child of the sun god out of the watery marsh environment, and thus the renewal of the world out of the flooded land anticipated with the beginning of the Inundation at the Egyptian New Year.

nothing is more beautifully human than seeking and noticing the things that remind us of humanity as it exists currently. i saw a post on tumblr earlier about a piece of pottery from many ages past, in which a woman sits in front of the stove and patiently awaits a loaf of bread. someone posted it, likening it to how they look when they wait in front of the microwave for their leftovers. i couldn’t help but be reminded of the fact there are entire online discussion boards and groups dedicated to finding connection in the ways the universe and outer space replicate the human body. or the fact that last term i read a play called ‘the unnatural and accidental woman’ which likened humans to the trees which we fell. how many poems have been written about personifying spring, summer, fall, and winter? how many songs have been sung about the sky, the fields, the rain, and how many of them have described these effects with the same descriptors as women, men, children, old people, and humans in general??
the epitome of humanity is searching for connection in absolutely everything.

New project time!! I finished my bachelor's (yay!) so now I have some more free time that I can use to get a lace project rolling. Here's the idea:
An adaptation of black figure palmette-lotus chain from amphora neck designs. I specifically like the chain design by the Antimenes Painter (and his circle).

I think the design can be easily adapted into a needle lace design. The symmetry and use of circular shapes feel similar to a variety of needle lace pieces I have run across. I still am not 100% sure what I will use this pattern to make. I am debating between a doily, collar, choker, or bracelet:
Doily: Basically what I have made in the past. It would consist of a singular oval. It's been a hot minute since I have actually worked on a piece of lace, so something familiar to ease myself back in might be best. I would likely leave off the bits between the ovals, but could do them if I wanted.
Tumblr media
Collar: a lace collar is a bucket list make for me and I think this design would be beautiful as one. However, it would be a very large piece and would require me to do some joining, which I have never done before. Being a bit out of practice makes me hesitant to take this on.
Tumblr media
Choker: Much like the collar this is a project that may entail joining and would also be relatively large. Smaller than a full collar, but still larger than I have done before. I also think the shape of a choker mimics the neck of amphora jars more closely than a collar.
Tumblr media
Bracelet: This would be the smallest option that may require joining, I could likely get away with just 2 ovals. However, it is the least appealing to me since I am very picky about how bracelets feel when I wear them and I have an suspicion that I wouldn't end up wearing it ever.
