Nutrek has a received a lot of criticism but you have to admit the newer shows have done a much better job of showing more female characters, a wider range of female characters, and more women in leadership. And I’d say more positive women in leadership. We saw a lot of antagonist female admirals in the 90’s. If I had made this poll in 2005, most of the options would be characters we only saw for an episode, or brief scenes.

“You're the new fella, aren't you?”
Tim nods stiffly, risking a gentle nod to the floor when Lori comes crawling, seating herself between the two adults and pulling at the cuff of his dirt-stained jeans. Mrs. R reaches down, bouncing Lori on her hip. “Syl’s an old friend, “ he says as formally as he can manage. He can see the way she looks at him, unwilling to hand the baby over. He can't blame her - but the last thing he wants is to call Sylvia and ask her explain the complicated dynamic. “Shes stayin’ with me and my siblings while she gets her ducks in a row.”
The lady nods, running her tongue over her tobacco-stained teeth. “You know about the guy down the hall, Loretta’s father?”
Her words are harsh. They singe the air and sting his skin, much like his nails as they press firmly against his palms. “Yeah. Billy Dawson.”
“You know what he did? What he does now?”
“Yeah.”
Mrs. R watches Tim as if he were here to take her daughter out for a night on the town. She's careful, and calculated. Wracking her brains to figure what the difference between the hood in front of her and the hood down the hall was.
“You're Tim Shepard. I recognize you from the paper. You went to school with my son.”
“I didn't go to school enough to remember your son, Mrs. Hernandez.”
She laughs. “I didn't think you would- he never caused much trouble for you and your boys... I'd be more concerned if you did remember him. And it's just Miss now.”
“I'm sorry to hear that.”
“Don't be. The divorce was cheaper than a casket- or a lawyer to get him out of jail.”
Lori rubs her eyes, resting her cheek on Ms. R’s chest. “I better get her home,” Tim says quietly, “Sylvia’s been lookin’ forward to seein’ her all day.”
She crosses the floor first, passing Lori on and watching her settle instinctively into his leather-clad arms. “You got a car seat in that car of yours, Tim?”
“I'm gettin’ one next week, honest to God.”
She slaps his shoulder, laughing as she swipes her keys off the coffee table. “Oh, don't bother. Sylvia always used mine anyway- you kids can have it. It's not that hard to figure out, I'm sure even you could do it.”
“Thank you, Ms. Hernandez.”
“Oh, for Pete’s sake, drop the formality. Call me Ruberta like everyone else does, Tim.”
He follows her down the hall and the flight of stairs, arms tightening around the body against his chest when he eyes the apartment at the end of the hall. “Thank you, Ruberta.”

Approaching the end of Trans Rights Readathon with this really magnificent collection of writings by trans powerhouse Leslie Feinberg, written in the aftermath of hir brush with death at the ends of a bigoted and hypercaptialistic health system. It consists primarily of hir various speeches to various queer organization advocating for solidarity, both with the queer community itself and with other struggles such as workers’ rights, disability rights, and civil rights movements. Feinberg explore such issues as health, history, diversity, capitalism, and protest in the larger context of a vast and awe-inspiring tradition of queer activism.
The text is supplemented with portraits of famous queer notables, including trans woman activist Linda Phillips and her wife Cynthia Phillips, gay Apache transman Gary Bowen, non binary Latino lesbian writer Michael Hernandez, transmaculine non binary writer Dragon Xcalibur, medical abuse survivor and intersex activist Cheryl Chase, Stonewall legend Sylvia Rivera, Black queer novelist Craig Hickman, Black drag activist William “Peaches” Malone, and bisexual drag artist Deidre Sinnott/Al dente.
On the whole, an extraordinary text that balances whip-sharp political thought and a keen insight into revolutionary history with hope, vulnerability, and love. Feinberg earns hir powerful reputation on every page, as do hir array of fellow activists and shapers of queer history. At once a clarion call for solidarity and a cutting-edge guide for community liberation, Trans Liberation will no doubt continue to prove itself a vital tool in the ongoing struggle for social and economy justice.
Reminder to check out #trans rights readathon for more reads, along with trans charities, lifelines, and resources! I’m encouraging everyone to donate or share to the Trans Health Legal Fund set up by the Transgender Law Center, or one of these top-rated trans and queer charities.
(trigger warnings below the cut)
(tw for discussions of transphobia, homophobia, racism, classism, ableism, violence, sexual assault, intersexism, forced medical procedures, police brutality, queer bashings)

#NeverForget #Cynthia Wesley #CaroleRobertson #AddieMaeCollins (all 14 years old), and 11-year-old #DeniseMcNair - The four girls murdered in the #16thStreetBaptistChurchBombing 60 years ago today (Sept. 15, 1963) in Birmingham, Alabama. The heinous act of white supremacist domestic terrorism was carried out soon after the 1963 #MarchonWashington for Jobs and Freedom (Aug. 28, 1963.)
#SarahCollinsRudolph was severely injured in the bombing and two Black boys were murdered that same day in Birmingham: 16-year-old #JohnnyRobinson and 13-year-old #VirgilWare.

Video and caption reposted from @nmaahc #OnThisDay in 1963, a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan ripped through the 16th Street Baptist Church, in Birmingham, Alabama, killing 4 little girls—11-year-old Carol Denise McNair, and 14-year-olds Carole Robertson, Cynthia Diane Wesley and Addie Mae Collins—and injuring several others.
This atrocity marked the third bombing in 11 days in Birmingham, Alabama, following the federal court order integrating Alabama schools. Shards from the church's stained-glass window are on display in our exhibition "Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom: The Era of Segregation" as a reminder of this tragic incident.
Racially motivated attacks on Black people, their homes and their churches grew so common that the city was referred to as “Bombingham.” African American civil rights activists made Birmingham a focal point of their desegregation campaign.

#MGMT GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDIO PLUS#
We were all extremely moved by the intention, care, and focus that was taken to bring these projects to life.” says Traci Sym, principal at plus & greater than +&>, SEGD Board Member and 2020 SEGD Global Design Awards Jury Chair. As the jurors moved through hundreds of project submissions, you could see when they came across a project that defined excellence. “The winning projects have a way of connecting with you. The storefronts told the true tales of wrongful murder convictions in Brooklyn, educational inequality in the Bronx, reckless taxi lending schemes in Manhattan, the life of an overlooked woman in Queens and forgotten history in Staten Island. The project served as a campaign highlighting the value of local journalism with five perspective-shifting storefront installations that brought important reporting from each borough to life. The 2020 Sylvia Harris Award-selected from all submissions for a project, which exemplifies design for the public good in honor of the legacy of Sylvia Harris, the founder of Citizen Research & Design-went to an exhibition called “The Truth is Local: Experiential Storefronts” developed by Local Projects, across the five boroughs of New York. One juror wrote of the work, “This project was a winner from the first moment we saw it: The care, intention, material, typography, and form of each aspect of the experience deliver a powerful focus on this history, and its continued contemporary impacts.” The thoughtful experiential design of the monument effectively communicates the sobering history of racial terror in the United States, contextualizing and imbuing the space with meaning through the use of art, and design.Įqual Justice Initiative will also collaborate to place a monument-identical to the monument found at the National Memorial-into the community, whose past it addresses to help transform our national landscape into a more honest reflection of the history of America and reflect a community’s ongoing commitment to truth-telling and racial justice. The Best of Show award was awarded to the “National Memorial for Peace and Justice,” submitted by design firms Small Stuff and a freeman in collaboration with Equal Justice Initiative in the category of Public Installation. The award-winning designers represented diverse parts of the globe, but what was a common thread for many, was a commitment to use design for the betterment of society. The 30 winning projects span a range of topics, disciplines and verticals, from highlighting the role of technology in addressing injustice in communal workspaces, creating interactive experiences that unearth unconscious biases to material-driven, nature-inspired park placemaking totems. This year’s winning projects in the SEGD Global Design Awards were announced on Jduring the live 2020 SEGD Global Design Awards virtual ceremony.

"curious anon": most influential pieces of media for you
When it comes to writing: anything by Ellen Hopkins, Edgar Allan Poe, really anything dark and dramatic! I also enjoy poets like EE Cummings and Sylvia Plath
Artists: Junji Ito, Jamie Hernandez, Ai Yazawa and so many of my mutuals! There are others but I have a hard time pinning down ALL of them if you catch my drift.

HISTORIC WINS: Election 2018 Recap
Meet the game changers out here making moves in Texas politics
Texas politics have often been favored as solely a Republican sport…however, this year things have changed. The Democratic era under Governor Ann Richards has long been revered as one of the golden eras of Texas but for many of us this was before our time or maybe you are simply new to politics. In any case, the 2018 Midterms had historic wins, flipped long held Republican seats, shattered…
