Hi I just saw your post about the rock operas and stuff could you post links and tips?? I’d be so so grateful <3
Hi! Most definitely!
Since you asked about "the" rock operas, I assume you're interested in the Silmarillion rock operas. For other rock operas & other Silmarillion musicals, check out @quixoticanarchy's posts here and here. @sewn-with-lilies-fair has created an adaptation directory for all Tolkien adaptations - stage and otherwise - here.
And now, the Silmarillion rock operas (coincidentally, all of them are Russian):
Finrod Zong / Finrod, the Rock Opera
Финрод is based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien as featured in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lay of Leithian and the Silmarillion. It ends after Lúthien defeats Sauron and frees Beren.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a trailer of the current production:
youtube
I'd recommend watching the 2014 staged concert first; it's my favourite, and there are English and Spanish subtitles available.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can check out the original Финрод-Зонг from 2001 here (English subtitles available) & a full recording of the current production here.
The original Финрод-Зонг lyrics, transliteration, and translation by @cycas; and the updated рок-опера Финрод version (2014 & 2022) by @quixoticanarchy.
My full playlist for this show, all videos are in chronological order (not meant for first-time watchers, though). There's a cast recording from 2008 available; it can be found in the Tolkien adaptation directory linked above. Here's a spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.

Lay of Leithian
Лэ о Лэйтиан is another rock opera based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien; however, it features the FULL story!

Here's the trailer:
youtube
There's no full AND free recording of the show available, but you can purchase a recording from either VK or Boosty; links below. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Here is my playlist for the show, and here's the song everyone's raving about.
Four absolute legends, @sewn-with-lilies-fair, @quixoticanarchy, @nereb-and-dungalef, and @warthoong have translated the entire show into English: here is the most recent version (which has also been published by the Leithian creative team!!). Check out this brilliant directory for more info on the show (web version only), and this spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.
Social media:
VK (lots of pictures, clips, and info; if you happen to live in Russia, you can become a donor and support the production. You'll get exclusive access to photos from behind the scenes, new costumes, and other fun things)
Boosty (if you don't live in Russia, you can support them here! You can purchase nine full recordings here; advice on how to do that)

Сказание о Берене и Лютиэн
aka the Beren and Lúthien equestrian show. It's a NOTmusical with horses based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien, and looks just as amazing as it sounds.

Trailer:
youtube
I don't know overly much about this show, but I can tell you this much: it has three acts à 35 minutes, includes the Dagor Bragollach, and is recommended for audiences 16+. A fourth act premiered on 28 January 2024 without horses. Feel free to check out their YouTube channel and especially their VK pages for more clips and pictures. There's no full recording available, only a concert performance of the songs. Another stage version without horses was recorded in March 2023, but it is no longer available to purchase. According to the director, there are definite plans for an English translation of the songs as well as a film version of the musical.
Social media:
VK: KSK Remmirath (most content), separate page for the musical, Olga Rudskaya (director, Finrod)
Instagram
Fingon & Gondolin Musicals
I'm definitely not an expert on these two, but you can find the theatre's page here. There are three full recordings of Fingon: 2021, 2022, 2023. The script can be found here - shout-out to @anna-dreamer finding and sharing it. A couple of songs from the brand new musical Гондолин premiered at КаминКон on 1 October 2022.
.
Since I don't consider the Melkor 'song opera' an adaptation in the strict sense, I don't want to list it as such; however, you can check out the most iconic song here (with English subtitles), and highlights from the show here.
.
Feel free to message me (or send another ask) if you have further questions, especially regarding Boosty and full recordings of Lay of Leithian & Finrod. I'm more than happy to talk about any and all Tolkien stage adaptations 💚 Check out my tags for more content!
IMPORTANT: This is not meant to be a masterpost. The information presented here is incomplete and the summaries very basic.

Monthly Music: March 2024 A STACKED MONTH!
Music that was released in or around March!
"Damn!" Zack Bia & Teezo Touchdown. Nasty dance track that pulses in your veins and takes you over, a bit.
"Miracle" Bayside. Pretty typical Bayside track but if you want some quality yet accessible alt rock, here we are.
"Ghost - Lofi" Mystery Skulls. Remember Mystery Skulls? Here's an instrumental reconstruction of their old song to study to. Very lullaby-adjacent. They did LOFI versions of the whole album but this is the most effective transformation.
"Not Sorry" & "Edible" & "Tell Me What You Want" Flo Milli. These three tracks are very different highlights off of it. TMWYW is the most experimental beat but I think Edible is my favorite.
"I'm Ready" Chung Ha. Cunty kpop. Not her cuntiest track but... if you want a track to motivate you to work out and then do a death drop... give it a shot.
"I Can't Run" Real Farmer. This song has a raw quality--the vocals, the guitar, the bass all feel like they're stumbling past but they're going on an adventure you want to follow them on. Loud, demanding.
And the complete opposite, "Walk Like This" by Flo is smooth, slick, and a perfect update to a more nostalgic R&B vibe. Poppy and perfectly constructed.
"Kira Kira" Fancylabo. Lovely, synthetic Jpop. Perfume fans, check in here.
"Collarbone" Izzy Spears. Beats to ache to. Emo rap with a transcendental beat.
"Your Money, My Summer" Everything Everything. They released a full album and it's all great but this is a stand out for me because "God knows I wanna go home" as a refrain just... burrows into your soul and hollows out everything in its way. Alt rock. Of the non-pre-release singles, "Don't Ask Me to Beg," "Enter the Mirror" (the most commercial track, I think), & "Buddy, Come Over" are my favorites, though I loved the whole album.
"Value" Ado. If you like Queen Bee, check out this track. Ado's singing is so rich and haunting. J... pop rock? Pop opera? I don't know how to quantify Ado's sound.
"Year of the Vulture" The Wonder Years. Emos go check it out.
"Arintintin" Rico Nasty & Boys Noize. Crazy frog ass song. Horny, nonsensical, silly, horny. This mini album is kinda all over the place--a nostalgic sound without necessarily capturing the full vibe but I'm having a blast.
"Pull the Rope" Ibibio Sound Machine. Almost discordant, I think I can't do justice to describing this song, so I'll steal an excerpt from their website: "the golden era of West-African funk & disco [meets] modern post-punk & electro."
I did listen to the Beyonce album. I kinda thought some of it was... too clean? Too smooth? IDK, it needed more grit on top of the twang, but that said, stand outs for me are "Tyrant," "Daughter," "Bodyguard," "Riiverdance," and "II HANDS II HEAVEN." Also, I know I sound insane saying it sounded too slick when I normally love slick production but the very clean vocals kinda felt almost... separate from the instruments idk how to explain it.
Kavinsky fans should try listening to Justice & Miguel's "Saturnine," it has the night drive thrum.
"Digital Magic" Le Youth. Classic Le Youth sound, just good electronic music. I'm a digital feline!!!!! Overly yearning vocals for a dance track that doesn't warrant it, you LOVE to see it. For more dance music, Nia Archives has another track off her upcoming album, check out "Unfinished Business" if you want more UK drum & bass that strikes the soul.
I was gonna do a small section of throwback songs I'm into but this post is already jam packed?? So, in brief, "Shinigami" Kenshi Yonezu (fun, anime-esque Jrock), "Back on my Feet" Boom Boom Satellites (electric, intense JRock), "Dip It Low" Christina Milian (sexy 2000s pop R&B), and not quite a throwback but not from this month "Bella" Alé Araya (lowkey and yet sensual).

K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Onew
Tumblr media
Onew is one of the five members of 2nd generation group SHINee, and debuted with them in 2008 before debuting as a soloist ten years later with Blue. Here are my credentials: If you’ve ever read my blog before, you’ll know I’m a huge ShaWol (SHINee fan), and so I’m slowly making my way through their solo discographies before eventually tackling their huge discography as a group. I’ve done Taemin, Jonghyun, Key, and now Onew, but Onew’s actually the one I know the least well, so I’m excited to get to know more! (Also shoutout to @fallsouthwinter, who knows his work like the back of their hand).
Blue is a ballad if ever there was one, and usually ballads take a lot to win me over…but this one managed! I love dancing and beautiful production, but I’m a singer at heart, and so I couldn’t help but be won over by Onew’s absolutely stunning voice mixed with such light strings. I don’t know exactly which life experiences the song is about, but the way he sings it, it’s like he’s pouring his heart into every note, and it’s quite an affecting performance, even without a translation. The MV too is gorgeous, all in shades of blue, gray, and white, swirling around him in a vortex.
Voice is quite a melancholy EP on the whole, but I still enjoyed the gentle pull-back and rush-forward of Your Scent, the catharsis in the slow-building Illusion, and especially the sweetness and warmth in the lyrics and acoustic guitar of Shine On You (my hidden gem); I go “aww” at the “I love you” every time.
Tumblr media
Dice is a song that, somehow, I hadn’t actually heard before? It seems kind of shocking, considering it’s his most popular song. It goes the precise opposite way from Blue, being much cuter, poppier, and stranger (the last mostly in terms of music video), and overall reminded me a little of Jonghyun’s laid-back R & B style, just with a peppier edge. Though the song itself is nothing incredible, Onew’s voice makes everything more enjoyable, and the music video had me very amused (especially when they run away together, lol). I also like the bridge a lot. From the EP, also called Dice, I enjoyed the building synths in the dancy, appropriately sunny Sunshine (my hidden gem), the vintage background beat in On The Way, and the vulnerability expressed in Love Phobia.
Kirakira, of course, is a Japanese release, and returns to the orchestral style of Blue, but with a far more upbeat feeling that I think works quite well with his voice. It has an excellent driving beat from its underlying guitar (which actually gets a solo, here), and a brightness that feels like it comes from deep within. And, that music video is adorable; I can never resist a cat! This is actually my favorite single so far, which is a surprise. Apparently it’s a cover of an older J-pop song by Odu Kazumasa, and “Kirakira” literally means “shiny”, which I hope was a choice made on purpose, because if so, that’s very sweet.
From the EP, Who Sings?, I loved the jazzier direction taken with the building strings in the slowly burning (seven-minute-long!) Everything, which feels like more of an epic or opera than just a song, so I couldn’t pick anything else as my hidden gem. But, I also enjoyed the feel-good orchestral pop of Uroko.
Tumblr media
Life Goes On is also a Japanese title, and like Kirakira, features the story of someone other than Onew in its music video (though he does appear in this one). It’s peppier from the outset, and feels like the OST of a drama set by the beach, which makes sense for a summer track. I especially enjoy its central message of joy and its encouragement for the little trials that life puts us through, and I admit that, though I expected to be bored at first, it won me over. From the EP, Life Goes On, my hidden gem was made by the 60’s indie-soft-rock vibes of Yoake No Sekai and the pathos and comfort in his voice in Lighthouse.
Circle is the first single I ever really saw from Onew, and it made me fall in love with his voice, for good reason. It’s so light and airy, but holds so much warmth and inner strength in it, which makes it quite unique. Circle is at times peaceful and soothing, and at others a little haunting with how high his voice goes. As a Wiccan, of course I appreciate the idea of life going on in cycles of seasons, years, and elements, and the ending with the full choir behind him mixed with the gentle strings and slow beat gave me goosebumps.
From the album, Circle, I had so many highlights: the coffee-shop vibeyness and percussive guitar of Rain On Me, the easy charm of Caramel (which reminded me of IU’s Bbibbi with its bubbly beat), the spacey synths of Anywhere, the soaring vocals and bright acoustic guitar of Paradise, the tongue-in-cheek vocalizing in the groovy No Parachute, and the cozy warmth of Walk With You. I completely understand why Billboard named it their top k-pop album of the year. Well deserved.
Tumblr media
Inspiration and Knock On My Door are Japanese singles, and I won’t spend too much time on them. Inspiration combines a very classic K-pop winter sound (those twinkling sound effects!) with a peppy underlying beat, and is pretty enjoyable, as holiday-sounding songs go. Knock On My Door is slower and more stripped-back, opting once more for an acoustic guitar and the strength of Onew’s vocals to create what’s quite a pleasant song, but a bit forgettable.
I’m glad I did this! Looking through Onew’s discography is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I gained a brand new respect for Onew’s beautiful voice and how well it fits with strings. I don’t have the same emotional connection to his work that I do with Taemin’s, Key’s, and Jonghyun’s, but I think it could really grow on me in time.
My Top 5 songs are Kirakira, Circle, Everything, Life Goes On, and Shine On You, with No Parachute as an honorable mention. Onew gets an 8.25 out of 10 from me, which is about what I expected. Like with Kim Sejeong’s work, I’m not a fan of an overwhelming amount of ballads, but I found that besides that, it had a pretty decent balance. The genres he delves into aren’t always among my favorites, but when he nails it, he nails it.
Tumblr media
Next time, we’ll be doing part 2 of the SHINHWA deep dive and a girl group supplemental. Tschüss!

what kind of music do you think the face family listens to (individually) ?
for me i think matthew listens to a lot of kpop (he's a kpop stan okay... especially girl groups) but that's basically it <3
ive been waiting for the day that someone would ask this so here are (in no particular order) their top 6 albums
Tumblr media
arthur's music in my mind is probably the least diverse genre wise. lots of rock/alt/indie but you can also find artists like Mika, Kurt Vile, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Against Me! and The Pretenders. he's really interested in finger picking and bass/guitar interactions in music. basically he cant listen to anything he cant relate to lol
Tumblr media
francis is a mix of old and new school. he likes music with string/brass instruments, jazz influence, orchestral story telling albums and Beyonce lol he'll listen to his favourite operas like Pagliacci and La Bohème but other stuff you can find in his library are things like Rina Sawayama, Kimbra, and Rihanna.
Tumblr media
as a bonus i was thinking about what music francis and arthur would mutually like since their taste can be radically different. and because im a stupid bitch ive decided that they like these specific albums because of how gushy and romantic some of them are 🥺💕 arthur can appreciate most of his music (because he can appreciate any artist with thoughtful compositions and a good grasp on their craft and instruments) but francis cant stand most of his rock/punk (its too brutish but he gets why he likes it) but the two share a mutual love for fingerpickers like Haley Heynderickx, Simon and Garfunkel, and Lucius + fun alt/pop/new wave oldies like FUN, Modern Day English, Tears For Fears and The Cure.
Tumblr media
alfred's taste is fun, nothing too sad but not necessarily listening to pop bangers all the time. he also loves jazz/funk/r&b/soul and his musical diversity comes from his immense love for movie soundtracks so things like the Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack, Mamma Mia, Dream Girls, Inside Llewn Davis, disney soundtracks in general, etc. he LOVES bluegrass and folk like Johnny Cash, Woody Guthrie, John Denver, the Carolina Chocolate Drops and he'll FIGHT if you call that genre country. he'll basically listen to anything that sounds good or gets him grooving
Tumblr media
im inclined to believe you when you say matt likes girl groups but i dont know enough about it to really say 😔 but in my mind matt loves white boy rap, shoegaze and he's got a passion for 80s pop. his music taste is pretty diverse and other stuff you can find in his library are Sophie, Wednesday Campanella, Japanese Breakfast, Alt-J and Vampire Weekend.
Tumblr media
then for these losers they obviously have a shared love for air guitar/prague rock/hair metal, pop punk and weeb music. they know every single word to Fergalicious, Glamorous by Fergie, Aint No Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani and Promiscuous Girl by Nelly Furtado and any other 2000s pop hit banger.

10, 12, 20, 23 for the silm asks?
Hello, @maellor; thank you for the ask!
10. What made you read the Silmarillion in the first place? My first introduction to the Silm was either through the rock operas or through incorrect quotes; I can't remember which. Either way, it piqued my interest, and I wanted to learn more about it, so I began reading the Silm (and HoMe and NoMe and Mîm's Klage... XD )
12. If you had to describe yourself with a character from Tolkien’s works, who would it be? I answered this here, but the short version is that my personality is a mix of Silm Galadriel and Finarfin with some personality traits of Feanor.
20. Funniest moment in the Silm? I also answered this here!
23. Who is Gil-galad’s father? Oh, this question! I personally enjoy all the theories (crack and otherwise) too much to pick a side; I would rather sit back and enjoy the fun! That said, one of my favorite crack theories (and currently the answer I give whenever anyone asks because it's too much fun not to mention) is that he is Maedhros' hand XD
A while back, I saw a post on tumblr that detailed the crack theory that Mairon experimented on Maedhros' hand and created a Maedhros look-alike, who was supposed to assassinate Maedhros and take his place. This didn't work out quite as planned, so he reinvented himself as Gil-Galad. I couldn't find the original post, so I can't credit the creator, but someone has expanded on the idea with a fic, which I have linked below:
While I was searching for that fic, I also came across a similar fic, only in this case Finrod and several Maia create an elf out of Maedhros' hand:

[TRANSLATION] Nigero: Sato Ryuji, 2022 was a Year "Filled with Worries" that Made Him Stop and Think
For a moment, I wavered, but I was able to properly come back of my own will, and I think that was a good thing.
Up to this point, I've always kept it mind not to talk much [about the work I do behind the scenes] and [instead] show it [my efforts] in my [performance in] productions, but there is the [part of] me that can't help but think that if I were to speak about how hard I work behind the scenes, I wonder if the perspective of people who say harsh things will change. I'm so glad that I was able to reconsider that and think, "Nah, that's so uncool".
The translation of the interview can be found: HERE

Portishead - Dummy
Trip hop is one of those genres where there are like three artists in the whole scene and all of them are legendary. That was kind of an early 90s mood honestly what with grunge being the same. Portishead's sound may be indistinguishable from their contemporaries for a lot of listeners but where Massive Attack and Tricky are coming from a hip hop sound Portishead has more in common with dub and jungle. They have slowed down the breakbeat to the point that its more implied than extant. Dummy develops a spacey, smokey atmosphere thats a little more tripped out and mellow than any other trip hop artist.

Prince - 1999
Yes! YES! In a sane world this would easily be Prince's best album. It's only by the grace of some flamboyant fag god that it isn't. 1999 is filled with huge funky beats and extremely corny synth lines. All the while Prince sing about what Prince knows best: sex. A third the album is made up of seven plus minute funk jams. Three in a row in fact. You'd think that going from the seven minute Let's Pretend We're Married to the eight minute D.S.M.R. to the nine minute Automatic would be tiring, but there is nothing tiring about 1999. This album which ranks 2nd or 3rd in Prince's discography for me would easily best most other artists best work by a mile.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Roger Waters clearly decided at the height of Pink Floyd's popularity that, instead of going to therapy, he should just get all his problems out in the form of a sprawling concept album. The Wall is lyrically and thematically dense and careful in its use of musical motifs. The four note riff that accompanies main character Pink at every turn becomes a musical symbol of his downfall. And lyrically Waters is working through so many things. His feeling toward his dad, war, stardom, and his fans. His hatred for Thatcherism and the boarding school syatem. Disillusionment and the desire to escape. It may be a lengthy album, but it still packs a lot into that time. The Wall weaves a rich tapestry, its a lot to take in, but there are enough catchy songs to make the first listen as enjoyable as hundredth.

Queen - A Night At The Opera
It seems like a crime to separate A Night At The Opera from its sister album A Day At The Races, but this is the only one that critics liked. A Night At The Opera is a deliciously eccentric album. Its content to jump back and forth between ripping hard rock solos, jaunty little ukelele tunes, prog rock epics, and other miscellania. The whole thing really earns the right to be named after a Marx Brothers film with all the camp and it does feel as dramatic as an opera at times. Nearly every song feels like it could be the centerpiece to a different album. Most people probably consider meme legend Bohemian Rhapsody to be the album's centerpiece, but for me it has to be The Prophet's Song because not a lot of songs can pull off the transition from prog rock number to acapella fugue and back with such ease and style. Everything is so tight and ao technically proficient. The whole album is a well oiled machine that just produces serotonin.

Ray Charles - Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music
In an era when soul, gospel, and R&B were still called 'race music' it was an incredibly bold move to release this record. Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music consists of lush soul covers of contemporary country ballads. Not only was this the most popular album of Ray Charles' career it also revitalized interest in country music. Where the nashville sound is lush he went lusher with more strings and backup vocalists. Where country musicians croon he croons like he was trying out for the rat pack. He takes everything that country music does well and then does it better as a soul songs. This man outdid an entire genre of music! This album has the biggest dick energy in musical history probably.

Mary J. Blige - My Life
Mary J. Blige is back and her second album brings more of the R&B with hip hop beats rhat we saw on her first album. Although there is more neo soul style crooning and less funkiness which makes My Life a little less interesting than her debut. Its still a pretty great album though if you liked Whats The 411? then you'll probably like My Life.

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
This is the most nonsensical, unfocused, chaotic, and stupid album in the entire Beastie Boys catalogue. It is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. The rowdy childlike goofiness is so fucking infectious. I dont know how they get away with singing an entire song about eggs and then asking me to take anything seriously ever again. I love it. The beats are next level though. Look up a list of the samples used on Paul's Boutique and you'll be floored by the sheer number. The Sounds Of Science samples five different Beatles songs and then also samples Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Pato Bantin, and Boogie Down Productions. It feels like they chose half their samples strategically to make brilliant beats and then a few goofball choices like the theme from Magilla Gorilla or Folsom Prison Blues. The incredibly vortuosic production combined with the childlike off the cuff sound is really amazing. They worked so hard to make it sound like they weren't even trying.

This is just the last 5 minutes of a 13 minute song which he entirely composed himself (I couldn’t upload the entire video as it is too long). If anyone didn’t know, he also composes music, and has a Masters degree in composition. And I love that in the end he did some Rock music style screams (in the scene where he is drowning), again blending different styles of singing. Every sound you hear in this song is his voice including the trill he does with his tongue and the low Buddhist chanting and the high vocal stuff in the middle. There are no studio effects when it comes to him because he himself is a walking natural effect machine, lol.
Now to anyone not that familiar with him, this is for you and it will be a long read…. Di is a true unicorn, an alien, whatever you wanna call it to indicate he is the only one in the world who does what he does. This is not an opinion but a fact that has been repeated and echoed by professional opera singers, jazz singers, pop singers , composers, producers, pretty much anyone who works professionally in the music field and they say that he is literally the BEST singer in the world technically. Even your fave singer would not dispute that if he/she heard him sing (I may repost that video of Jessie J hearing Di for the first time while she was backstage and watching him on a monitor, she kept saying backstage “wow! Wooow! Amazing! Wow!”. She looked shocked and utterly impressed).
He has 7 octaves (Mariah Carey has 5) but even though that in itself is ridiculous enough, he is a master in each register. Like if you hear about someone else reaching more octaves, remember that reaching a note is not the same thing as singing that note while sustaining that note effortlessly for a long time. That is the thing that is remarkable, which is that he just doesn’t simply reach a very high or a very low note but he sings that note absolutely perfectly. Like Juilliard graduate sopranos who work at New York Metropolitan Opera are in awe of his soprano level, just like a baritone male singer is in awe of Di’s baritone because Di sings all ranges with such resonance and power and slays the shit out of every octave.
He can be lowest of bass and baritone and also the highest of soprano. Some high notes he sings are not even on the piano keyboard. And it is not just his range that is impressive but he very smoothly incorporates different styles of singing which is not done before by anyone as well as he does. He can blend opera singing and pop singing and even a bit of R&B and then even incorporate some Middle Eastern or Asian styles in there too as well as some Rock music style belts. He can do it all and do it exceptionally well.
He also has insane breath control. He can not only reach ridiculously high notes but can also hold them for what seems eternity. His lungs are out of this world too it seems, lol. He is the PERFECT combination of natural talent and intense training. He couldn’t be the unicorn he is by being just ridiculously talented or just hardworking but both of them together made him who he is. He was born with exceptional talent but he has also been training intensely since he was five years old. He then had university degrees in opera singing (Bel Canto) and also pop/jazz singing, then he went on to have his masters in composition. And he still improves himself every day today because the only person who can be better than Di is Di…..
Oh yeah, and he is easy on the eyes which is a nice bonus. 😝 You don’t have to like the genres he sings in, but it is his insane vocal talent that is what makes me stay in awe.
You can ask me anon questions about him if you like. I know everything about him.😬

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to The Fifteenth Amendment (1870), Akarova, John Astin, Warren Beatty, Joey Castillo, Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton, Daisy Coleman, Robbie Coltrane, Miles Davis’s 1970 BITCHES BREW LP, Celine Dion, Graeme Edge, Francisco Goya, MC Hammer, the Jeopardy game show (1964), Norah Jones, Charles Lightroller, Lene Lovich, singer-songwriter Don Malliband, Hayashibara Megumi, Kacey Musgraves’s 2018 GOLDEN HOUR album, Walter Piston’s 1951 4th Symphony, the 1946 Arlen-Mercer musical “St. Louis Woman” w/Pearl Bailey & the Nicholas Brothers, Ximo Tebar, Jay Traynor (Jay & The Americans)—good to have met you, Vincent van Gogh, Randy VanWarmer, (the original) Sonny Boy Williamson, and the great American singer-songwriter Frankie Laine. Born of Italian parents, Laine was influenced by opera and blues, particularly Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong—who Laine called “my idol.” Laine’s early career had many setbacks and let-downs and, after threatening to quit music at least six times. Then in 1946 he was “discovered” by Hoagy Carmichael, which led to Laine’s breakout hit “That’s My Desire” (now a jazz standard). Concurrently he discovered a niche singing in films.
He signed to Mercury Records, then switched to Columbia, and the hits (and royalty checks) rolled in. He was heralded as an innovator for his unique vocal technique and masculine tone. Like Bessie Smith, Laine’s voice projected and could fill a hall without a microphone. One critic described Laine as “a big lad with steel tonsils who belted out torch blues while stomping his size twelve feet...he owed nothing to Crosby or Sinatra...” In contrast to the smooth balladeer of the era, Laine would bend notes and sing around the chordal context of a note rather than to sing the note straight, and he stressed each rhythmic downbeat. Like Johnnie Ray, Laine was first cast as an R&B/jazz singer and is now regarded as a forerunner of rock & roll, influencing Elvis Presley and Ray Charles (who admitted to mimicking Laine), and Laine was later name-checked by The Beatles. Laine, however, was able to branch out into folk, gospel, pop and, famously, the Cowboy/Western theme songs imbedded in pop culture: “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” “Rawhide,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and many more. His Campbell Soup “Manhandler” commercial hasn’t been on the air for decades, but people are still singing it. In his long career he had more than 70 charted records, 21 gold records, and global sales of over 100 million records. He was still performing at age 93 when he passed away in 2007.
Laine’s 1949 cover of the folk-spiritual “That Lucky Old Sun” became his 5th gold record, perhaps because a lot of working people could relate to it. The lyrics of the song contrast the toil and hardship of the subject’s life with the obliviousness of the natural world. Yet he sees a silver lining and God's deliverance behind it all. Inspired by “Ol’ Man River,” “Lucky Old Sun” was written in 1949 by big band musician Beasley Smith and prolific Tin Pan Alley lyricist Haven Gillespie—who also wrote "You Go To My Head" (another favorite of mine). “Lucky Old Sun” gained presence with me after hearing Brian Wilson's 2007 concept album based on this song. In 2020 I added it to my set list for when I perform in assisted living homes. My arrangement blends the definitive Laine recording with the soul of Louis Armstrong's cover (in 1949 both artists released "competing versions"). Meanwhile, HB Frankie, and thank you for giving us years of amazing songs.
