Hi I just saw your post about the rock operas and stuff could you post links and tips?? I’d be so so grateful <3
Hi! Most definitely!
Since you asked about "the" rock operas, I assume you're interested in the Silmarillion rock operas. For other rock operas & other Silmarillion musicals, check out @quixoticanarchy's posts here and here. @sewn-with-lilies-fair has created an adaptation directory for all Tolkien adaptations - stage and otherwise - here.
And now, the Silmarillion rock operas (coincidentally, all of them are Russian):
Finrod Zong / Finrod, the Rock Opera
Финрод is based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien as featured in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lay of Leithian and the Silmarillion. It ends after Lúthien defeats Sauron and frees Beren.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a trailer of the current production:
youtube
I'd recommend watching the 2014 staged concert first; it's my favourite, and there are English and Spanish subtitles available.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can check out the original Финрод-Зонг from 2001 here (English subtitles available) & a full recording of the current production here.
The original Финрод-Зонг lyrics, transliteration, and translation by @cycas; and the updated рок-опера Финрод version (2014 & 2022) by @quixoticanarchy.
My full playlist for this show, all videos are in chronological order (not meant for first-time watchers, though). There's a cast recording from 2008 available; it can be found in the Tolkien adaptation directory linked above. Here's a spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.

Lay of Leithian
Лэ о Лэйтиан is another rock opera based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien; however, it features the FULL story!

Here's the trailer:
youtube
There's no full AND free recording of the show available, but you can purchase a recording from either VK or Boosty; links below. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Here is my playlist for the show, and here's the song everyone's raving about.
Four absolute legends, @sewn-with-lilies-fair, @quixoticanarchy, @nereb-and-dungalef, and @warthoong have translated the entire show into English: here is the most recent version (which has also been published by the Leithian creative team!!). Check out this brilliant directory for more info on the show (web version only), and this spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.
Social media:
VK (lots of pictures, clips, and info; if you happen to live in Russia, you can become a donor and support the production. You'll get exclusive access to photos from behind the scenes, new costumes, and other fun things)
Boosty (if you don't live in Russia, you can support them here! You can purchase nine full recordings here; advice on how to do that)

Сказание о Берене и Лютиэн
aka the Beren and Lúthien equestrian show. It's a NOTmusical with horses based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien, and looks just as amazing as it sounds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trailer:
youtube
I don't know overly much about this show, but I can tell you this much: it has three acts à 35 minutes, includes the Dagor Bragollach, and is recommended for audiences 16+. A fourth act premiered on 28 January 2024 without horses. Feel free to check out their YouTube channel and especially their VK pages for more clips and pictures. There's no full recording available, only a concert performance of the songs. Another stage version without horses was recorded in March 2023, but it is no longer available to purchase. According to the director, there are definite plans for an English translation of the songs as well as a film version of the musical.
Social media:
VK: KSK Remmirath (most content), separate page for the musical, Olga Rudskaya (director, Finrod)
Instagram
Fingon & Gondolin Musicals
I'm definitely not an expert on these two, but you can find the theatre's page here. There are three full recordings of Fingon: 2021, 2022, 2023. The script can be found here - shout-out to @anna-dreamer finding and sharing it. A couple of songs from the brand new musical Гондолин premiered at КаминКон on 1 October 2022.
.
Since I don't consider the Melkor 'song opera' an adaptation in the strict sense, I don't want to list it as such; however, you can check out the most iconic song here (with English subtitles), and highlights from the show here.
.
Feel free to message me (or send another ask) if you have further questions, especially regarding Boosty and full recordings of Lay of Leithian & Finrod. I'm more than happy to talk about any and all Tolkien stage adaptations 💚 Check out my tags for more content!
IMPORTANT: This is not meant to be a masterpost. The information presented here is incomplete and the summaries very basic.

I think i posted about this before but one of the things i really love in CoH is that it’s full of rivers and there’s no sea. It’s a mannish tragedy in a war-torn elven world about doom and mortality and bondage, and it struggles against the tragedy. Could it have been different? A river is a water that can travel, but it can only travel a predetermined route. Does it mock Turin or is it trying to help? Is it the river’s fault for being a river and being there, or could things have changed if Turin’s attitude changed? Anyway this isn’t what this post is about. What I love very very dearly is that after the ending of CoH, there are no more rivers. Hurin goes where all rivers go, straight into the sea. There are no more questions, no more possibilities, just splish splash see you at the dagor dagorath

Jackson's casting Elrond as an Antagonist [Fantasy Racist] Father-in-Law for his film adaptions was like
like
look, okay, the entire Silmarillion CAN be reduced to "Elrond's Backstory": the dude is related to every Ruling House in Middle-Earth, bar one¹.
so PJ's mischaracterization of Elrond? it's... it's a Plot Hole. for the ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE SETTING.
the Elrond thing is, to me, a Microcosm of my Greater Issue with the Jackson Films as a whole. Tolkien's Works are Very White: he was a very white man. They're STILL more colourful than PJ's films.
Jackson didn't just add Elrond's Fantastic Racism to his adaptions: he added IRL Racism too.
The racism in Jackson's LOTR films is infuriating to me: any other fantasy setting that was THIS faithfully racist across the board? It would have been called out. LOUDLY. Rings of Power has addressed or been tagged to account for all the same controversies that Jackson was never held accountable for, not in LOTR and not in his Hobbit films either. It's exhausting to personally point out how Jackson whitewashed his productions, not to mention the other ways he screwed marginalized groups over. Remember when Jackson & the NZ government collab'd to kill film crew rights? on the country's Labour Day? it's even called The Hobbit Law!
Jackson's Adaptions of LOTR and The Hobbit were "faithful" to Tolkien in many of the worst ways. They set Precedents that subsequent adaptions (TROP) have struggled to combat.
Obligatory Afternote
Weta Workshop's screen test shots for female dwarves influenced & popularized our fandom's mythos for "dwarrowdams".
The Hobbit films reinvigorated fan discussions on gender, sexuality and how fluid they are as spectrums. They also prompted fans to readress the Antisemitism & Racism that Tolkien employed throughout his depictions of the khazad.
The films did not do those things alone, fans of the films did: the good found in the Jackson films exists alongside their racism.
Footnote
¹Elrond has no family ties to the Line of Durin nor any hobbit chieftains (the Tooks, for instance), not unless he stood-in as "kin" to Bilbo, Frodo, Sam &/or Gimli during their afterlives in Valinor.
Easterlings, the Haradrim & the other [Racially Stereotyped] Fantasy Humans in the Legendarium live beyond "Middle-Earth".
They are, very technically, denizens of "Farther Earth" or perhaps "South-" or "Eastern Earth".
It's also pretty probable that the Line of Elros (Elrond's In-Laws & Esteemed Niblings) interwed with Haradrim rulership early on, whilst Elrond was still an "Uncle" or "Great-Uncle" to Numenor's Kings.

[spins the Silm Headcanons Nobody Else Shares (Yet) wheel]
Though Elrond was, inevitably, involved in the politics of building Lindon, he was not only NOT Gil-Galad’s official herald yet at the start of the Second Age, but he was only tangentially involved with the new government. Instead, Elrond spent the first few centuries of the Second Age as an adventuring anthropologist/archeologist.
He traveled around Lindon, and inland and up and down the shore, talking to all variety of refugees and recording the histories and cultures of their people, from ancient myths to recent war stories to how this group of Men (or Elves or Dwarves) cooks their porridge vs how that one does. He dug and sometimes dove into ruins of forts rent by Light and Shadow, often with foul lingering malaise, to retrieve papers and goods warped by flame, sea, and worse.
Because Elrond’s childhood was filled with many refrains of loss, and one was,
“This is how we baked nutcakes in Menegroth!” his mother explained, hands sticky with chestnuts and honey. Under her breath, not meaning her even stickier sons to hear, she added, “I think.”
“Oh yes, there were…” Eärendil’s fingers twitched as he counted in his head. “…eleven different major fountains in Gondolin! One for each Great House, though all were managed by Lord Ecthelion—oh, no, but then that must be ten…?”
“Now, in a proper course of musical education, I would be starting you on basic dancing songs today. But Filúriel is the only one of us left who knows how to dance a good gavotte—”
“Filúriel died three years ago. Orcs on the way back from Sirion.” Maedhros didn’t look up from the daggers he was sharpening. Only his words gave any indication that he was even aware of the lesson taking place across the room.
“—But there is no one left who knows how to dance a good Tirion Gavotte.” Maglor never missed a beat. “So instead I will start you on basic Songs for striking fear into the hearts of your enemies. Have you both done your warm-up exercises today?”
[smash cut to 200 years later]
Elrond: Are you telling me. That there is a chance. That a portion of the Great Library of Thargelion, greatest collection in Beleriand of books and art brought physically from Aman, is still intact?
Random improbably still alive Nargothrond-Fëanorian #6: If the cases were water-proof as well as orc-proof and fire-proof…if they were orc-proof and fire-proof at all…especially dragonfire-proof…or dragon-ice-proof… If they stayed hidden, if we even shut them all properly in the first place, as we evacuated just ahead of the— my lord, where are you going?!
Elrond, sprinting past them down the corridor: Deep-sea diving!
(In the late Third Age, the Library of Rivendell is widely regarded as Arda’s single greatest repository of historical records of life in Middle Earth. This is incorrect—the single greatest such repository is an ever-growing library on Tol Eressëa, to which Elrond spent 3000 years sending copies of everything from Hobbit almanacs to Dwarvish epic poems to account books from three Elvish kingdoms to an Age’s worth of Dúnedain Ranger journals. Anyone Sailing with extra cargo space has been cajoled into taking at least a few tomes. People and places may be lost to time, but part of why he chose an Elvish life is so that they will not be forgotten.)

Lords of Gondolin | With A Musician Reader
Tumblr media
Request: hi mina how have you been? i hope you’re doing ok c: i was wondering if you’d write a scenario about human!reader showing off her greatest musical creation to the elves? it’s a piano they’ve spent a decade workshopping & building to perfection. readers also made middle earth versions of the upright bass, acoustic guitar, & cello. they plan on making more instruments cause it’s their passion and how they want to be remembered by. for the lords of gondolin - @dicksoutformtl
A/N: I’m doing just fine! It was fun writing this request know that all of them would be impressed at reader’s craftsmanship. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Galdor
Galdor is thoroughly impressed by your craftsmanship in creating new and improved versions of some of the instruments they already have while crafting newly discovered pieces as well.
He would have known you were into the musical arts, hence why you were always playing or composing a new piece every few weeks. However, what he had never suspected was a entire batch of new instruments being presented to him.
He is enthralled and eager. While some instruments may not be a favourite to his ear due to the sounds they emit, you can bet he’s informing you of some upcoming festival where you can show off your creative talents.
Galdor is a proud elf Lord who would happily talk about what you’ve created to the others and recommend you to the King to play your pieces at balls. He wants everyone to be aware that you’ve made inventions and they’re groundbreaking.
There are moments when he’d sit around and listen as you explain to him how you created each piece and the inspiration behind them or watch as you play songs on them.
It touches him when he becomes aware of the purpose of your collection of paper in the corner of your room. They were all songs written to be played on these instruments about how much you like or care about him. He’s touched and appreciative.
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Ecthelion
The musical master is too stunned to speak as he enters your humble abode and notices all the new “classical” instruments lying about. Ecthelion’s curiosity gets the better of him and he can’t help but strum the strings of the bass and cello, or press the keys on the piano and gasp at the new pitch echoing.
He becomes aware that these are not instruments that exist in Middle Earth and bombard you with a million questions. “How did you make this?” “Where did your idea come from?” “What inspired you?” “Who are you really?”
Ecthelion probably assumes that you’re not normal to come up with all these instruments since the Valar would have created their instruments for them…so are you a Maiar or Valar in disguise?
You will be followed around until you answer all of his questions with responses that tickle his brain the right way. And be prepared for him to request if you two can now play duets at festivals and balls. He wants you to be the musician couple.
Ecthelion will show you off, more than Galdor and some of the others because he’s proud and wants everyone to know how talented you are. He doesn’t care if the other Lords comments that you’re more talented than him, he would simply acknowledge and say, “Yes!”
And not to forget, he’s making sure that your name gets recorded in the history books as an important figure in music. He’s even more proud when he realises that you’ve outdone musical protégé like Maglor and Daeron.
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Glorfindel
There is not a person without a ten-mile radius who hasn’t been alerted by him of your musical genius abilities. Even Lord Elrond would be shaken aggressively as he is being told about your creation. “Y/N has reinvented the world of music! There is no one as great as them!”
Goodbye Lindir or Ecthelion, hello to Y/N, the new musical protégé of Gondolin or Imladris. Get used to being announced at dinners or balls to play your newest pieces and having Glorfindel looking like a proud dad (if he had a camera, his look would be completed).
Anytime you’re making a trip to your music room, don’t go without Glorfindel or else he’ll barge in all grumpy, complaining that you forgot him. He wants to be present at each new masterpiece you’re making, whether it be a new instrument or song. He likes watching the look of concentration as you play each piece to conclude which suits the song best.
Be noted that he’s curious, so he is bound to touch the piano or cello and gasp as the notes ring out. I can see him being drawn towards the guitar and requesting that you teach him. I don’t know, but Glorfindel playing the guitar suits him (idk if it’s just me).
Cue Glorfindel wanting to join you whenever you’re playing and the guitar can be included. He’ll happily sit beside you and strum away lightly while you play the piano or violin.
Like Ecthelion, be prepared to be announced/talked about by Glorfindel any chance he gets. He’s not rubbing it in anyone’s face, simply expressing how proud he is of his little human creating instruments that “change everything”.
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Egalmoth
Most proud of them all, however, he’s torn between wanting the world to learn about your skills and also keeping them hidden so he alone can know this secret and cherish it.
A bit stingy sharing your talents with the rest of the world because they should be for him to enjoy and praise. He does complain when people don’t praise you enough and encourages them to be louder.
I don’t see anyone surpassing him in terms of being the biggest cheerleader. This elf considers himself blessed to be around such a gifted person (you’re more gifted than his friends in his eyes). You’re a miracle worker creating new instruments unheard of or reinventing old ones.
He wants to learn about your pieces even though he doesn’t know about music deeply, he would to be told everything. Don’t worry if it sounds all foreign to him, he’s understanding.
Egalmoth would inquire if you would like more materials to make more instruments because he understands that it’s your passion. He would even ask if you would like to open up a school to teach others.
Like the others, he would request that you play at dinners when the Lords come over or if the King is hosting a dinner party. Might get annoyed if someone wants to collaborate with you because you sound great on your own.
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Rog
This craftsman is enthralled, amazed, excited, and proud of your creation. You made these instruments all on your own! Rog cannot cease talking about how you designed and crafted all the instruments by yourself. This is one of the rare moments when he's talkative nonstop.
You’ve got one of the great blacksmiths hooked on your inventions and wants to know the process you took to create each piece. He’ll be teary if you mention that you used some of his instructions during his days of teaching you basic material crafting.
Learning more and more that everything was done on your own and you spent years making each puts a type of ride in his heart that’s unshakable. If you show him how each piece is played, Rog finds himself whipped and ready to boast.
It’s strange seeing the quiet blacksmith boasting and talkative, and it’s for good reasons, you. All the Lords know, the citizens know and the King as well. Very soon, you’ll be having a hearing with the King who was intrigued by your new inventions courtesy of Rog cheerful chattering.
Rog doesn’t mind whether you choose to play privately or publicly, the choice is yours and he’s pleased with either decision. He wants you to be comfortable, but he would ask if you could play him a piece so he could experience the beauty of your creations.
Tumblr media
.𑁍༊˚ Maeglin
Curiosity caught his attention for a great purpose and it led him to discover new things worthwhile. Maeglin is enamoured and his curiosity is piqued tenfold. Questions rattle off the top of his head about all that he’s seeing and how did you manage to think about creating these pieces.
You’ll be seen as someone highly skilled and great in his eyes because you’re out here reinventing the world of music, something the elves are passionately known for.
“Can I come to watch?” “Can I sit and listen?” “Will you play for others to see what you’ve made?” He will stand in the doorway as you play your pieces and write songs suited best for each with a sense of pride in his chest. You’re a part of his House and creating all these great inventions to make a name for yourself. How could he not be pleased?
Definitely another one who would recommend you to the King to present your showstopping performances during balls. Whether you play with the orchestra or sole, Maeglin is supportive.
You’re Maeglin little songbird who he wakes up to playing your piano or guitar on the balcony or in the drawing room. You provide him with melodies that allow him to melt in and drive his tension away.

The Silmarillion: The First Age (with a tad of Years of the Trees at the beginning) Song: Tranquility, by Sawano Hiroyuki and Anly
So, like everyone else on here, I get complex animatic sequences in my head whenever I associate a song with a hyperfixation and I normally ignore it, since I can’t actually animate... buuuut I gave into the urge this time because I’ve been in this fandom for over twenty years and have never made anything for it.  And yeah okay, maybe being a First Age fanatic I may have been pretty miffed at how that was handled in RoP and wanted to take a stab at a 2 min abridged version for myself XD
Also
I SWEAR this video was supposed to be a general visual summary of the First Age (with a generous sprinkling of headcanons here and there) and not Mairon’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Age. I mean, obviously he was going to have a bit more presence than is, perhaps, his due, because he’s my all-time favorite and I am very biased, but I absolutely did not mean for him to sneak into like. 70% of this lmao. He’s responsible for his own actions.

I can understand why Elrond allowed Bilbo live in Rivendell, in his halls, around several others of grandeur, allowing Bilbo to creating poems, music and translating files from Elvish into Common Speech, about Ancient history, Tales and Legends.
Have you ever stopped to think that Bilbo made everything said about him come true, and even went further?
He proved to be “The thief wants a good job, a lot of excitement and reasonable reward” or “Expert Treasure-hunter”. He really was “the expert thief and even gives the dwarves some ideas or suggestions” (even more than expected, given that Thorin believed that the problems would only come from Lake-town, the same with Gandalf announcing that the problems would occur much earlier).
So Bilbo went faced Trolls, met and charm elves, found the One Ring, spared Gollum's life, confront spiders, freed the dwarves from the elven dungeons of Mirkwood, overcame his fears of heights, put the dwarves in barrels and he entered a river even without knowing how to swim, entered Erebor and stole from the dragon Smaug, then spoke to that dragon and discovered its weak point (information brought to Bard by a bird, without which he would not have been able to kill the beast). And then Bilbo even used the Arkenstone as a ruse to try to avoid bloodshed, even if it meant enmity with his dwarven friends, and even so he returned to the mountain to be on their side (Bilbo still considered himself friend and loyal to them, he just had the courage to go against them on something he believed they weren't right: not negotiating with others).
Bilbo was in the Battle of the Five Armies and came out alive, and in end he forgave Thorin (after Thorin almost threw him for dead). It was because of him (and Galdalf's) that an king returned to reign in Erebor (Dáin) and another king returned to Dale (Bard). So, There was friendship between elves, dwarves and humans in those parts, after their union in battle.
So Bilbo returned to Bag End, had to repurchase his possessions and was not well received by the other Hobbits, but he was not subjugated by The One Ring over the years, and he did not become lonely and elusive, on the contrary; continued friend to dwarves and elves and humans for years, adopt Frodo (which would change the future course of Middle-earth forever, since this adoption would determine the future Ring-bearer), taught Sam to read, welcomed Merry and Pippin into his home, who was liberal with money and helped the poor and needy, and threw lively parties with food and gifts for the entire Shire, and even after decades in possession of the One Ring he managed to give it up (albeit with Gandalf's help).
Yes, the same Bilbo who had in possession a blade of Gondolin, the One Ring, the Arkenstone, and the mail of Mithril at the same time. And in the end he was able to get rid of each of these things of so much value and power.
Yes, I understand why Elrond and other elves wanted him around.

wait, are @turin-deactivated4841207 and @outlaw-neithan-deactivated4880911 the same person as @mormegil?

Not really my business to say, seeing as I'm neither of these, but people have reasons for changing blogs/names/URLs. If this was true and if I was that person I would be very annoyed at whoever posted such a thing for everyone to see.

I am sick and tired of Gondolindhrim complaining they're bored. How about you try living here and fighting orcs for a while? I'd be glad to switch.

No, really, this is the worst time ever to be a musician. I'm not pretending that the way he let us down is in any way worse than everything else Maglor Feanorion has done, but...
Can we separate art from the artist when the art itself is so interwined with the artist's deeds? Can we appreciate the noldolante itself ignoring that it was entirely a lie, regrets that apparently didn't stop him from committing the same evil over again?
But it is impossible to cut oneself away from all influence Maglor Feanorion has had on our music. And even keeping to the apolitical pieces, should we ignore the person of the artist? Does it help anything?
It's like the famous Fëanorian lamps debate all over again. Do we change the name since we're uncomfortable using it? Do we try to forget who was their creator - but is that even ethical, no matter what evil he wrought? Or is that maybe wrong? Maybe, if we use the lamps, we should be discomforted?
#I really don't know how to approach this

So, we've arrived at the havens. I thank you all for the condolences, thoughts and prayers... I still don't know what to do from now on, but I guess maybe I can finally rest a bit. And mourn.
To all the people asking, yes, my husband and son are thankfully okay; this is the one silver lining. My son seems to have made a friend already...

putting this under cut so I can delete this later, but please have a passionate rant about how a girl actually feels about receiving missives from the people who killed her parents.
