Hi I just saw your post about the rock operas and stuff could you post links and tips?? I’d be so so grateful <3
Hi! Most definitely!
Since you asked about "the" rock operas, I assume you're interested in the Silmarillion rock operas. For other rock operas & other Silmarillion musicals, check out @quixoticanarchy's posts here and here. @sewn-with-lilies-fair has created an adaptation directory for all Tolkien adaptations - stage and otherwise - here.
And now, the Silmarillion rock operas (coincidentally, all of them are Russian):
Finrod Zong / Finrod, the Rock Opera
Финрод is based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien as featured in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lay of Leithian and the Silmarillion. It ends after Lúthien defeats Sauron and frees Beren.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a trailer of the current production:
youtube
I'd recommend watching the 2014 staged concert first; it's my favourite, and there are English and Spanish subtitles available.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can check out the original Финрод-Зонг from 2001 here (English subtitles available) & a full recording of the current production here.
The original Финрод-Зонг lyrics, transliteration, and translation by @cycas; and the updated рок-опера Финрод version (2014 & 2022) by @quixoticanarchy.
My full playlist for this show, all videos are in chronological order (not meant for first-time watchers, though). There's a cast recording from 2008 available; it can be found in the Tolkien adaptation directory linked above. Here's a spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.

Lay of Leithian
Лэ о Лэйтиан is another rock opera based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien; however, it features the FULL story!

Here's the trailer:
youtube
There's no full AND free recording of the show available, but you can purchase a recording from either VK or Boosty; links below. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Here is my playlist for the show, and here's the song everyone's raving about.
Four absolute legends, @sewn-with-lilies-fair, @quixoticanarchy, @nereb-and-dungalef, and @warthoong have translated the entire show into English: here is the most recent version (which has also been published by the Leithian creative team!!). Check out this brilliant directory for more info on the show (web version only), and this spreadsheet containing performance details, albums, and playlists for the current production.
Social media:
VK (lots of pictures, clips, and info; if you happen to live in Russia, you can become a donor and support the production. You'll get exclusive access to photos from behind the scenes, new costumes, and other fun things)
Boosty (if you don't live in Russia, you can support them here! You can purchase nine full recordings here; advice on how to do that)

Сказание о Берене и Лютиэн
aka the Beren and Lúthien equestrian show. It's a NOTmusical with horses based on the tale of Beren and Lúthien, and looks just as amazing as it sounds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trailer:
youtube
I don't know overly much about this show, but I can tell you this much: it has three acts à 35 minutes, includes the Dagor Bragollach, and is recommended for audiences 16+. A fourth act premiered on 28 January 2024 without horses. Feel free to check out their YouTube channel and especially their VK pages for more clips and pictures. There's no full recording available, only a concert performance of the songs. Another stage version without horses was recorded in March 2023, but it is no longer available to purchase. According to the director, there are definite plans for an English translation of the songs as well as a film version of the musical.
Social media:
VK: KSK Remmirath (most content), separate page for the musical, Olga Rudskaya (director, Finrod)
Instagram
Fingon & Gondolin Musicals
I'm definitely not an expert on these two, but you can find the theatre's page here. There are three full recordings of Fingon: 2021, 2022, 2023. The script can be found here - shout-out to @anna-dreamer finding and sharing it. A couple of songs from the brand new musical Гондолин premiered at КаминКон on 1 October 2022.
.
Since I don't consider the Melkor 'song opera' an adaptation in the strict sense, I don't want to list it as such; however, you can check out the most iconic song here (with English subtitles), and highlights from the show here.
.
Feel free to message me (or send another ask) if you have further questions, especially regarding Boosty and full recordings of Lay of Leithian & Finrod. I'm more than happy to talk about any and all Tolkien stage adaptations 💚 Check out my tags for more content!
IMPORTANT: This is not meant to be a masterpost. The information presented here is incomplete and the summaries very basic.

ngl one of my favourite LOL Rock Opera things is the sheer absurd delight of seeing Morgoth Bauglir, the Great Foe and Marrer of Arda, holding a big bouquet of flowers at curtain call.
Tumblr media
He’s so happy! :DD
Tumblr media
He loves his flowers so much - see, he snif!
Tumblr media
he snif again! 💐💐
Maybe that’s the real reason he wanted the Silmarils - he wanted some grow lights so he could rig up a greenhouse in Angband. :’)

6, 19 and 25 for Mairon
17 for Melkor
🌝
Mairon's favorite foods and flavors
He's a picky eater. When he eats, only the best is good enough.
Among his favorites are red wine, preferably sweet, freshly hunted meat, preferably tender, and filled chocolate (if he can somehow stop Melkor from eating it first).
Something that viscerally disgusts Mairon
Ar-Pharazôn. Most incarnates and especially mortals. Fish, seafood, a lot of water-related things (most notably post-FoN). Strong smells that disturb what he thinks is a pleasant "scent environment".
Surprise NSFW headcanon for Mairon
He's observant and curious. If he's with one of his chosen lovers, he wants to pinpoint what exactly it is that he finds pleasing about them and will explore and study them with every available sense. Once he finds out which sensations he likes - for example their smell, or when they touch him in a certain manner or a noise they make - he will seek out that sensation again and again.
Melkor - what his voice sounds like
It's... an experience. And, much like him, full of paradoxes.
Melkor's voice is the kind that grabs your attention immediately, like if you walk into a room full of people where everyone is talking, he's the one your hear first. It's powerful and loud even when he's speaking quietly, but not necessarily as in him yelling at people, more like... it fills the room. Speaking over him is impossible.
It's also... just very nice. Not as melodious as other Ainur, but the kind where you can immediately tell someone is an opera singer. Melkor is also, at least in the early days, fairly animated in his speaking which has you listening to him for hours before you even know it.
While his voice is usually not super deep (not quite the level of, say, Ulmo and Aulë), it's Very Manly™️, but he has great range and could even sing nightcore.
In terms of music, it's a lot like a piano - beautiful instrument, can feel very domineering.
When he's losing his shit or busy going insane, he's going off-key and it sounds quite jarring.

Alright, the ROP rumors have forced my hand. I'm going to give my thoughts on them.
"Season 2 will begin with a flashback to the creation of the universe."
Might I ask, why? Even if they nail the portrayal itself what narrative purpose could it serve at this stage in the show?
To show that Sauron was there? They already had Sauron confirm he was there for it in S1.
To introduce Melkor? They already did that in the opening of S1, more than that they explained Sauron's connection to him too.
I don't see a purpose other than it being a thing that people recognize. For that reason, I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor turned out to be true.
"Tom Bombadil and Goldberry will be confirmed to be Morgoth and Ungoliant serving out their sentence."
Yeah, no way. They don't even have the rights to use Ungoliant for one thing and I doubt even they'd go as far as to have Morgoth become a jolly hermit and claim it's punishment.
Now what I can see them doing is suggesting that Tom (if he does appear) used to be evil in some way. I can see them doing that under the misguided notion that it adds complexity and makes him "morally gray" when that's really not the point of his character. As far as I know he's supposed to represent the spirit of Tolkien's English countryside, so it'd be a bit weird to make him the ultimate evil in Middle Earth.
Also how the heck would Ungoliant end up as Goldberry? Last we heard of her she got so hungry she ate herself alive, lol.
"Sauron will go back to Eregion again, this time disguised as Celeborn."
This one I can unfortunately see happening. They've already hinted (after everyone complained) that they're going to have Sauron double-back to Eregion and repeat his entire infiltration plan to forge the other rings. Which in itself is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard but regardless...
They still don't have the rights to the story of Annatar, so Sauron will need another disguise. And if they don't want Galadriel to deliberately hide the truth from the elves again, it'll have to be a disguise that fools her. Hence, Celeborn.
This would serve their shipbait purposes as to appease the only fans they do have (the shippers). I know it sounds like something straight out of a soap opera but that's about at the level of Rings of Power anyways, so hey.
"Sauron has a son who was killed by Adar."
... Why?

9, 16 and 19 for the violent asks? :3
choose violence ask game
worst part of canon everyone knows about the sexism, but the racism is definitely the worst. even beyond tolkien himself calling orcs "the least lovely mongol-types" and designating them as acceptable for the heroes to kill, you have entire groups of humans and elves who are othered and marginalized in similar ways, even worse when they're associated with "darkness" and described as "swarthy" in skin tone.
you have the dunlendings, the easterlings, the southrons, and the haradrim for men, all aligned with the enemy and given african and/or asian characteristics. the peter jackson films only make this worse by making the haradrim soldiers caricatures of asian people, and i worry that war of the rohirrim is going to do the same thing. the numenóreans on the other hand are given divine blessing, and their royal line descends from a union between a man and an elf, enriching the lineage. even though some of the numenóreans are evil, that doesn't erase that emphasis on bloodline that becomes so important to aragorn's story later, as the same royal lines are reunited once more when aragorn marries arwen.
for the elves, it's a bit different, but the hierarchy is still present. the avari are mentioned very little, and one can assume the elves caught by melkor to become the first orcs (if you go with this particular origin story) were avarin. you also have the silvan elves, and tolkien straight up says their culture was erased by the sindar who colonized their lands. the nandor barely get any mention, except when denethor and many of his people die in the first battle of beleriand, and saeros, who is a villain in túrin's story and dies a humiliating death. the "high elves" are those who have seen the light of the trees, and they are ranked above all the others. they control the narrative, and as a result we know very little about these other groups of elves, who are props in the story to be ruled over.
all of this definitely stems from tolkien having benefitted from colonialism, as his viewpoints were shaped by that experience. colonizers like galadriel and finrod get their actions handwaved away because they act "for the greater good"- but it's certainly NOT good that the petty-dwarves lose their home and die out completely. you can't just ignore all of the racism in the text, because it informs every derivative work. while i am white, and i can't speak authoritatively on these issues, we need to make it the norm to discuss them openly without being accused of "attacking tolkien", so we can make this fandom safer for people of color.
you can’t understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc) i don't get why so many people try to make maedhros so reserved, overly sensitive and whiny. i get he's a tortured redhead and it's fun to ship him with his pretty half-cousin but he has a canon personality, you know.
you’re mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like… thingol as a character. the lay of leithian rock opera did it to me, it's not my fault

“All I Ask of You” is to ready yourself for this update to “Beautiful Creature of Darkness…”
Chapter 28: the eve before battle… tensions, emotions, and needs run high as they prepare for battle at dawn. But in the shadow, there is a chill as darkness finds its way inside the castle walls…

Saurondriel | Second Age | Explicit
Gothic lit AU with heavy Phantom of the Opera tones. 🥀🌹
CW: near death, ghosts, vampire smut
The night was still, windless. As if the Greenwood kept watch.
Or… his mind raced. Pausing mid-sharpen and almost slicing his hand. Those thick leather gloves were a good deterrent to pre-battle stupid mistakes. Muttering curses under his breath, his eyes flashed to the entrance. That stillness seemed too still. Unnatural. Like how woods fall silent as the strongest predator makes his way through its shadows…
Something hissed, those two large torches flaring blinding hot for a second before snuffing out completely. Something rode through the still air, a scent that curled his nose and flashed the darkest memories of his past. The stink of sulphur burned. And all that was left were distant flickers in the hall and shadows that lengthened and deepened. Inkier, lively, deadly, the sent every hair straight on the back of his neck. If the woods were silent because of a predator near, he was the prey, with piercing eyes gazing from some invisible blind. Ready and waiting.
Black mist swirled in the door, amorphous but tall. Sauron grit his teeth, settling into his fear. His greatest fear. But that mist moved away, floating beyond his sight and drawing him after it. Through the abandoned halls, he raced, watching as that stinking black fog curled around corner after corner, until he found himself on the terrace outside the ballroom. Sauron’s breath sucked between his teeth, brows furrowing in anticipation as he watched the mist almost form a body. Tall, lanky, and made of pure darkness.
“Have you missed me, my servant?” Voice like a serpent tongue tickling his ear and sickening his stomach
Melkor.

I was just listening to Finrod the Rock Opera and Dior's pov he really had great restraint not responding with 'we need the Silmaril' with 'so it was absolutely no problem not going to get them back yourselves and in fact actively holding captive/trying to kill my parents when they tried but now it should be yours?' Personally, I think not handing something over to people who tried to force your mom into marriage while holding her captive is correct.
The thing about the Quenta, which I feel sometimes I overlook by focusing on the many fascinating characters in the story, is that it's just... an ever escalating parade of retaliations that I have a hard time condemning because I can see why the characters act the way that they do.
I think if I were Dior I might've given up the Silmaril in an attempt to avoid battle, but at the same time... it's not a good look to give up your heirloom to your mother's captors because they semi-politely threatened you - for one, it establishes a dangerous precedent. And also generally, Dior has every reason in the world to hate the Feanorians and not want to negotiate, whatever the consequences may be.
But then, Luthien did steal a Silmaril. Maybe she personally earned that, but she can't just bequeath other people's heirlooms because "I stole it fair and square" - that's not a thing.
But Luthien only stole the Silmaril because she had no choice, and the Feanorians also only want it because they have to get it, and then we have to go back to the Oath, but then you'd have to go back to why Feanor is the way that he is, and if you go far enough back, you get to Melkor's rebellion that wrecked everything.
But at the same time... "Evil exists" isn't a valid excuse to allow people to behave in bad ways, and people are responsible for how they handle bad situations. So whoever is ultimately to blame, it's very possible to assess whether it was Dior or the Feanorians who was/were in the right in this situation - or whether both were right, or both where wrong.
...which is why I never debate who is right and who is wrong in the Silm. It's literally headache-inducing for me. Some things are very clearly bad and some things are very clearly good, but most of the time it's just... shades of gray, complicated by the fact the Silm is a very concise (and possibly canonically biased) historical account, so nuanced details are bound to be missing at times.
This answer couldn't be more unsatisfying, could it? Sorry, ethics make my brain explode. I definitely think the Second Kinslaying was unnecessarily ruthless (as are all Kinslayings), but the prelude to it is much more complex for me because I'm not sure there's a single person involved who I can point to and say "What a shining example of behavior!" - but conversely, I feel like everybody is very sympathetic

Holy Crap
Hello. I'm Sunny. And today I offer you my version of "Modern Girl in Middle Earth". But with what I would have done if I was in Valinor during the Silmarillion. I'm not from an English speaking country so sorry if there are mistakes. Being proud of my language and culture, I will put words in French and references to the French culture. I will give the translations and explanations at the end of the chapter!Little help: italics are for quenya
My updates will be when I've written something so uh... sorry in advance. Have a good read!
(Of course, everything you recognize belongs to our dear Tolkien!)
"Holy crap, why is Manwë in front of me?"
The man, or rather the Vala, stepped back and looked at me warily, surely thinking I was a servant of Satan. I mean, of our dear Melkor. Morgoth. Melkor. Anyway.
"How do you know my name, stranger? What are you?"
Oh fuck. Just why? I should have listened to Paul and learned Quenya. Also, isn't it a rule in fanfics that Y/N has a great integrated translator or is such a fan of Tolkien that they are fluent in Quenya? God-no Eru dammit! Help me with this!
"Answer." "You know what, I don't understand anything you're saying okay. I'm going to tell you about my last day on Earth, even if you don't get it. Well, it all 'started' on a beautiful summer evening."
And here we go for a ride! Start the flashback music!  ~~ " We eat! It's on the table!"
My brother got up from the couch, grabbing my phone before I could react.
"Luke. Give me my phone back." "Boo-hoo, I'm scared."
He mimed crying before glancing at my screen and letting out an exaggerated sigh.
"ao3 again? And what are you looking for now?" "Fanfiction ducon."
He rolled his eyes.
"I'm not dumb sœurette. About who?" "The twins." "Which ones? Weasley? Skywalker?" "Not the Skywalkers! What do you take me for? That's seriously shady with... you know." "Well, I never know with you... And may I remind you that your name is Leya with a y and not an i? Thanks Maman."
Yes, you heard me right. Or read. My brother, a twin at that, is named Luke. And I'm Leya. Thanks Papa who is more than a Star Wars fan and thought it was funny to convince our mother to name us after the Skywalker twins. But our mother made a mistake when we registered with the Civil Registry. And now we are Luke and Leya Owes.
"Are you done staring into the void? There's no camera and this isn't a 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before' type show."
A sharp and brutal return to reality. Thanks frérot. He waved my phone in front of my eyes and snapped his fingers (with his other hand of course).
"What twins? And then we can go downstairs to eat and avoid Maman's wrath." "Fëanor's twins. Ambarussa. Amrod and Amras. Telufinwë and Pityafinwë." "Ah okay. I see who it is. Here. Take your phone back."
He tossed me my phone while turning to go open the door to our room. I retrieved my phone on the fly (thanks to my reflexes) and followed him to join our parents.
"What took you so long!"
Our mother was waiting for us at the bottom of the stairs, hands on hips.
"Sorry Maman, Leya thought she was in a soap opera and was staring at an invisible camera. I tried to get her to react but she wouldn't stop until she finished telling her story.
As I went to sit down, I kicked him in the shin and smiled at our parents.
"Let's eat, I'm starving." "Be careful or you'll sink tonight."
As I kicked him in the shin again and handed my plate to my father to serve me.
"Don't say that Luke, I'm sure your sister is going to do great tonight."
Thanks for the support Papa.
"But speaking of which, isn't it better that you don't eat before the race, chérie?"
I nodded as I watched my dad put some peas on my plate.
"Luce said I could eat a little beforehand just to. But nothing too big. Besides, it's in four hours..."
My mother nodded to support my words and everyone resumed eating. Three hours later, I was in the 'lodges' near the lake where I was going to do my first night race of the year. Despite the fact that the race was an hour away, I was already dressed in my wetsuit and my hair was already tucked under my swimming cap. The stress was starting to build. Still. Two kilometers in the dark is always extremely long. My coach, Luce, had her hands on my knees to stop them from shaking and was gently answering my questions.
"What if I miss my roll? Or get a false start!" "You keep going. You're fighting for the gold, Leya." "Even with a cramp? Can we really not go test the water? Imagine it's freezing and I'm getting hypothermia!" "That's what your suit is for. And then we are in summer, the water can't be like in winter. And you can't test the water. That's the point of this race, to get into unknown water. Every year, a new lake." "What about the cramp?" "Leya... How many times have you participated?" "Fifth. So yes. I know what to do if you get a cramp. The thing Benoit explains every year. The tab on the side and boom light. Sorry I'm stressed." "I saw that! But Leya. You've already brought us three silver medals and one bronze. That's already great. But this year is the last." "I know. After that I'll be too old. Well, in a manner of speaking. 17 is still young." "Leya. This year you're going for the gold. More than ever okay? Gold." "Yeah. Gold. Got it." "I'll give you your last hour with your family and friends. Then you jump in the water and bring back?" "The gold medal. Thank you, Luce. "Thank you instead."
She winked at me before walking out of the tent and my family and best friend walked in. My brother was the first to break the silence.
"Ready for the gold, Princesse?" "I think so. This year is my year. I can feel it."
Paul, my best friend since kindergarten came over to pat me on the shoulder.
"You shouldn't have put on your swimming cap right away. You're keeping me from ruffling your hair Tomate."
Tomate is my nickname because when I was little and even now, when I get angry I turn as scarlet as a tomato. And therefore lose all my credibility according to Paul.
"Let's make a bet Leya."
Him and his bets. How much is he going to talk me into learning Quenya?
"The conditions are? Because if I accept without knowing, I'm pretty sure I'll get screwed."
He looked at me with a fake outraged look before dramatically putting a hand on his chest.
"I am outraged by this attitude, jeune fille. And to answer your question, if you win the gold, I'll stop talking to you about learning Quenya. But if you win something else... You will take quenya lessons with me." "To please you I will accept. But be prepared for me to win!"
Afterwards, the atmosphere was lighter and we talked until Luce arrived.
"It's time."
I stood up and gave a small smile to my family and Paul before leaving the tent. A small breeze caressed my skin and made me shiver. We walked until we reached the edge of the lake, where the race would begin.
"Ready?" "Ready." "You're going to make it kid, and don't forget..." "We're taking the gold home." "That's good."
She left, probably to join the other coaches. Almost all the participants had arrived. Focus. Speed. I am speed. One winner, fourty two losers. I eat losers for breakfeast. Speed.  Faster than fast. Quicker than quick. Wait. Am I doing the beginning of Cars 1?  The first shout of the referee sounds and without having understood what he said, I automatically put on my glasses and get in position to jump. I can do it. The start is launched and I jump to make a great dive. Great start. Ready to feel the water wrap around me and start swimming. But. This is the ground I encounter. Grass. Grass? Bruh. Where's the water?
"What the hell is this?"
I took off my glasses and my head spun from the bright light my retina perceived. After a few seconds, I could see the beautiful plain that had replaced the lake and the forest.
"Where the fuck am I?"
I stood up before I heard someone speaking to me in an unknown language.
"Is everything okay?"
I turned around to face a guy. Tall. Handsome. With long white hair. His clothes were strange, but so were mine. Being in a wetsuit in the middle of a plain is suspicious. But what shocked me the most was behind him. Two gigantic trees. And they were shining. One gold, the other silver. Telperion and Silpion. I believe. So that means... the guy. That's Manwë.
"Holy crap, why is Manwë in front of me?"
And there it is. You know everything.

Fingolfin’s father comes to him in a dream.
“You must seek out your half-brother in the depths of Nar Shaddaa if you are to have any hope of defeating the Dark Enemy,” dream-Finwë says, his voice as sweet as clear ice. The stars of the galaxy are reflected in his pale eyes, and in them is a map to a single soul.
“Fifteen years, and that’s the first thing you say to me?” Fingolfin asks incredulously.

Finrod the Opera is good enough, actually
Oh, damn, it was so good to see it live on stage though. The very original Finrod Roman Susalev was reprising his role. I bought elven ears and proudly wore them in subway. These guys delayed the show for like 30-40 minutes, and then mics broke off like twice, the first being Galadriel’s during the opening. The poor actress seemed to have lost her voice while trying to outshout the deafening music. So the finale she sang so quietly and sheepishly... Still the costumes were awesome, and the cast was passionate and believable, and damn, Finrod’s aria brought tears to my eyes. They actually used a cool effect on Finrod’s people and then on Beren - Sauron stole their will and temporarily turned them into his puppets. Such a cool detail of canonical Sauron’s behavior.
Yeah, the libretto is mostly good, and smart, and heartfelt, and sometimes it’s outstanding. Like when Finrod asks Celegorm and Curufin to try share his faith. Or when the dying Finrod declares the most important secret out there is one of human’s heart and only those who humble themselves before it can truly understand it. Still more often than not words are shaky and hard to comprehend by ear. Sometimes there is too complicated a thought in them, it’s clear on paper but obscure and clumsy in a song. As a read Finrod the Opera is kind of better. The music in it is... well. Kind of plain. Nothing really catchy or memorable. Very bardic (in 20th century sense) piece of theater.
The biggest change plotwise is, well... Sauron wears Melkor’s crown. Yeah, that one. With Silmarils in it. Walking out I heard one guy shout in amusement and bewilderment, How come Sauron’s got Melkor’s crown?! I suggested, He stole it after they had sex. The guy and his buds laughed out loud, and I felt happy to be around geeks.
Anyway, I still loved it. Really sorry for some small parts the new version leaves out. But as it is, I am very happy I got a chance to see the opera so soon after finishing the Silmarillion.
Here are they, pictures, audio and all. Also there are several full recording on YouTube, with English subtitles too, even the old one with crappy everything and the most handsome Finrod in the Universe.

Tolkien Adaptation Directory
I’ve recently returned from a there-and-back journey into watching every Tolkien adaptation I could find- mainly film, tv, and theatre- but I was more surprised to discover a corner of the fandom interested in watching them too! And more than anything, I want to share what I’ve found, and draw some attention to these amazing works. I firmly believe that every adaptation adds something to Middle Earth- whether it’s as big as a different character or plot interpretation, or as small as a new art style, they all make Tolkien’s stories just a little brighter.
This page has everything from the Peter Jacksons to Born of Hope, and from the Hobitit miniseries to the Finrod rock opera, and always room for more! I’ll absolutely keep updating as I find things, or if I’m sent anything!
Good luck on your adventures!
Tumblr media
For my own safety and sanity, this list is limited- if loosely in places- to film, television, and theatre. For an extensive music directory, please visit the Tolkien Music List or this wikipedia page. For other adaptations (i.e. radio dramas, video games), this wikipedia page is a good starting point.
Adaptations are listed by story, then country/language, and then year. Titles marked with a star (*) are my personal recommendations.
