*Inhale* I already made a post about it once that resume the evolution of their relationship with some funfact here but let me dive further.
Rom com high school crush.
She’s his best friend’s sibling, they have seen each other afar for a long time, they have the familiarity you’d get off people who often see each other even if they don’t really talk.
There is this awkwardness of the jump between platonic care and affection to someone you grew close to the romantic attraction that both stop them from making any move or even thinking there is any move to.
They aren’t childhood friends they are childhood connaissance, there is a slow-burning connection that links them to each other and it’s scary because-
What if they said no ?
What if she just imagined feelings that weren’t there ?
What if
That is too scary to think about. The incertitude that if your selfishness for a romantic connection wasn’t reciprocated it would hurt more than just you two. It would hurt your close common friends, it would hurt your confort zone, it would be impossible to not be confronted to that refusal everyday when you get out of your house and see theirs and know that they are here too and you will bee seen but you don’t want to be seen.
The possibility of a failed relationship is scary, even more so when you deeply care for the other and want them to feel at ease after all they went through.
Darcie knew Qiu had a hard time when they were younger, Qiu noticed that Darcie changed when they entered high school, and they are proud of each other and want to cherish that growth.
They are content with what they have, despite yearning for more.
*inhale* in conclusion none of them would confess unless there is a 100% certitude that it would go well or when it’s already too late to regret it-
Step 4 is far away for now but if we can have an ending like with Cove where you reunite after college, they would probably confess at this period lol

I wonder, if MC told Qiu "ask me to say", does Qiu dream of that moment? Do they remember it on important dates such as MC's birthday, anniversaries (because I can deffo see Qiu having the day they met, the day they became a couple, etc marked in a calendar or memorized in their heart)... the day MC left?
How much do they wish to turn back in time to that exact moment and tell them "please, don't leave"?
Hahaha I am sure that moment haunts Qiu.
Like you said, it probably floats up unbidden whenever Qiu thinks a little too hard about MC, whether it be something that reminds them of MC, or a special date.
P.S. It was also inspired by the vibes of this scene in Portrait of a Lady on Fire between Héloïse and Marianne.
Explanation of the context of the plot below—italicized part from Google, the rest is added by me (obviously spoilers for the movie, so avoid it if you want to watch it unspoiled. But watch it!! It's so good. That movie changed my life.)
Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.
And basically they fall in love, and eventually the time comes when the painting is done, and Marianne must leave, and Héloïse must get married. The scene is of Marianne being sad about it, and Héloïse asks, "do you want me to resist the marriage", and Marianne says yes. Héloïse asks, "are you asking me to?" and after a long pause, Marianne says no.
I LOVE THAT. Oh god, that scene destroyed me.
I feel like the scene is similar to what I wanted to achieve with MC's "ask me to stay" and Qiu's "I can't".

Here's more to this idea I had earlier-
Imagine that Baxter goes back to Golden Grove - and decides to bring a romanced!MC with him. They meet with Qiu and decide to catch up and talk about their lives, introductions, etc.
"It's nice to see one of Baxter's old friends here," MC smiled, "Even though I knew him for a shorter time, it's good to know there are more people that know about his monochrome hair…"
As soon as the words left MC's mouth, Baxter stiffened and slowly turned to them. Meanwhile, Qiu had a confused expression. "What monochrome hair?" Qiu asked, confused and curious to know what MC was talking about.
After a second to process Qiu's confusion - MC realizes that Baxter's old friends didn't see him with his monochrome hair.
So, the MC has two choices: they can keep quiet about it or try to tease Baxter through his old appearance in front of one of his old friends.
If they go the teasing route, I can imagine the MC having a photo of Baxter with the monochrome hair and trying to show Qiu. And Baxter trying to stop MC by hiding the photo from Qiu's eyes out of embarrassment.

But can I basically just request a OLN&F step two crushing scenario with both Tamarack and Qiu(separate), the gist of it is that MC has always been a physically affectionate person as a kid and kept up with that attitude even as a teen, but! is also very unaware of the fact that because they are so physically affectionate with Qiu/Tamarack people all the time think their dating 😭

They're absolutely beaming as you hold onto their arm
And if you're being affectionate in public they'll look at the poor people surrounding the two of you, shit eating grin on their face as if they're saying "See this? They chose me and not you. Lol. Losers"
If there's a rumor going around that the two of you are dating, Qiu wouldn't deny it if someone asks them whether its true or not
"So are you two actually dating or..?" "Maybe, maybe not" "…So are you?" "Are we :]?"
Gosh they're insufferable
Makes those rumors worse by either flirting with you or subtly reciprocating your affection where people can witness the moment (the latter rarely happens)
If people start hating on you because of how affectionate you are towards Autumn, they'll start flirting with you even more just to spite them
And because they find your reactions adorable <3
Oh, and Qiu totally puffs out their chest proudly like a lion whenever someone mentions that you're more affectionate towards them than anybody else
Though they're overly smug and teasing about it, they absolutely melt inside. Especially if you're being affectionate in private
They love your little private moments so much. It makes them feel special that though you could've been with anyone else, you're there being affectionate with them instead
Qiu doesn't put in effort to be physically affectionate with anyone these days, but they're willing to do so if its for you
They got so used to your affection that anytime you're near each other and you don't start getting touchy with them after 2 seconds, they kinda get annoyed
Would always be searching for your warmth, it doesn't have to be much, just your pinkies intertwined or your shoulders brushing against each other is enough

Qiu x Reader/MC (Step 2)
Warnings: implied depression
I love that Qiu is confirmed to have ADHD, but also the way they are in the step 2 preview seems like a good ol' ADHD + depression smoothie. I know very well what that's like and this is actually loosely based on my own experiences at that age. Hope you enjoy ♡

Just like every other morning, your first destination after leaving for school was Qiu’s house. You two going to school together was an unspoken rule, and it was one you were happy to have in place. Not only was Qiu your best friend, but you held Qiu very close to your heart. Qiu did the same.
Even if it had always gone unacknowledged, it was undeniable that there was an incredibly special bond between the two of you. Qiu changed as they grew, closing themselves off to the world, but no matter how cold they may seem to everyone else, a soft spot for you remained. It always remained.
You arrived at the fort and went through your usual routine of tapping whatever appendage Qiu had dangling down (this time it was their feet) to get their attention. Qiu lifted their legs back up into the little nook they were huddled in without a word, now fully out of sight.
While it was a little odd to not receive a verbal response from them, you were used to the resistance and climbed up the rope until you could see inside the fort. Qiu was hugging their knees to their chest, curled in a ball and looking away from you. That only prompted you to climb in fully.
“Autumn?”
“Go away,” Qiu mumbled, still facing away.
That was a bit colder than you were used to, even for Qiu. You inched toward them, but Qiu only pulled away more.
“I’m not going,” they insisted.
You grew more concerned by the second. You tried to move so you could see more of Qiu, but the tight space made it difficult. At least Qiu took a little mercy on you and ever so slightly turned their head, meeting your eyes. Their expression was unreadable; their voice, however, was not.
“…Please don’t make me go.”
It was a quiet, broken thing. You immediately abandoned the idea of school and threw your backpack out of the fort, wanting nothing but to help Qiu feel better.
“I won’t,” you said, gently placing a hand on Qiu’s shoulder. They looked away once again, shame evident in the way they hunched over even more than they already were.
“You shouldn’t skip ‘cause of me.”
A shrug was the only answer you gave while staying put. At this moment, school was the least of your worries. You scooted over just a bit so that you were fully next to Qiu and began to softly play with their hair, tucking it behind their ear. It was a habit you got into not long after you two met, and Qiu always welcomed the soothing touch. This time was no different. They closed their eyes and leaned into the feeling.
A wave of emotions crossed Qiu’s face until they finally scrunched it up and furrowed their brows. You were confused at first, but then you noticed the other’s eyes were glossy–Qiu was trying not to cry. Without hesitation, you put an arm around Qiu and pulled them in so that their head was resting on your shoulder.
You murmured delicately into their hair. “It’s okay.”
No matter how strongly you trusted each other, Qiu still sometimes needed encouragement to open up. You would gladly provide that encouragement any time.
Now having permission, Qiu let themselves cry. It wasn’t loud or intense, not even close to a sob, but it was enough to see that they had reached some sort of limit. Over the last few weeks, you noticed the way their face sagged and the slow, lethargic way they moved; Qiu’s crying was caused by complete and utter exhaustion.
After a few minutes, they took some deep breaths and lifted their face to look at you, their best friend in the world.
“Love you.”
For some people, that phrase was only used in a very specific way. It had lots of connotations and hidden meanings, and it was a phrase saved for special occasions.
Not for you and Qiu.
You were easily the most important people in each other’s lives. You shared an unparalleled level of trust, an indestructible desire to always be together, and you both knew it. In each of your minds, there was absolutely no reason to hold back in expressing that. Besides, there was no other word that could really encapsulate what you felt. It was love, plain and simple. It never mattered what kind of love it was, and it could change and evolve, but it was always, always love.
“I love you too, Qiu.”

COVE HOLDEN🐚
In the beginning, he’d be a bit intimidated by your attitude.
He might’ve avoided you when he first arrived in Sunset Bird , already making the judgment that you wouldn’t be that pleasant to be around.
That's until he meets you!
Cove noticed that you were much more softer and nicer with him than most people.
You wouldn’t be mean to him like you were with people who you weren’t as close with
And you would avoid rebelling or breaking rules when he was around to make sure he didn’t get in trouble for it.
Of course, you were still you. But with Cove around you were mellow.
Your moms notice how quickly your demeanor changes when he is in the general area.
One minute you could be telling somebody off and then the next you would be hugging Cove and asking him how his day was and if he wanted to get a snack later.
Cove would worry that you might get into serious trouble one day, which you reassured that you wouldn’t.
Depending on what comfort level Cove is: Cold, Medium, or Warm; this might just work for the two of you.
Cold Cove wouldn’t mind as much since he isn’t that social and rather be in your company anyway. Not that he is condoning it.
Medium Cove is a bit more awkward and less defined, he doesn’t want people to be put off and avoid you.
Warm Cove is probably the most understanding, he understands that's just how you are. If you didn’t like being nice to strangers then so be it, if you didn’t want to follow some rule then that's ok. Warm Cove would encourage you to be more social though, he wants you to have friends.
Cove appreciates that you are softer to him though, I don’t think he could handle you being genuinely mean to him.
You and Cove have fun though, It's a interesting contrast to see the two of you together.
Like a yin and yang.
QIU LIN🗒️
Their reaction depends on what stage of their life they are in.
Step 1 Qiu might be the TINEST bit nervous, also worried that you might get into trouble or get on somebodies bad side with your behavior
Qiu, of course, is very welcoming and polite still. You may be mean to everybody else but you aren’t to them.
They get a little smug about how you are softer and seem to favor them more than most people.
Like Of course you like their company, Everyone does!
Qiu tries and get other people to see your softer side but you don’t put down your walls for them.
Qiu during Step 2, is a completely different story though.
They just go “same💀”
You two probably skip school all the time and it starts to get concerning and your parents start enforcing it more.
You two get into a bit of trouble…(mostly loitering, you two aren’t getting into anything serious lmao)
Qiu understands your attitude more the older they get. Sometimes some people don’t deserve your time and sometimes some people deserve your kindness
It's a self-preservation, At least that's how the two of you understand it.
While everybody else worries, you and Qiu are just chilling.
They like having someone around who can match their energy.
TAMARACK BAUMANN🍂
Step 1 Tamarack wouldn’t like you at first, Or at the very least be indifferent.
She would want you to be nice to everyone, not just her.
She does brag a bit that you are only softer towards her.
She also has a rebellious side as well, you two get into lots of shenanigans together and cause lots of mischief all the time.
Your mom and her grandparents def put leashes on you two.
It's always kiddy fun.
Once again, Step 2 is another story.
Based on her interaction with Qiu, If you were similar to being mean to others and causing trouble then she would be disappointed
But she’s less awkward around you and tries to encourage you to be more nice or at least a bit more sociable.
Tamarack knows that you can be one of the most softest and kindest people she knows, you’ve watched her back and been there when it got tough
And she wants people to see that rare side of you, but she understands that you are just not interested or in the mood to be nice or to follow rules.
Depending on how rebellious you are, even her grandparents may be wary. It was okay when you were kids but your old enough to get yourself and Tamarack into serious trouble.
On a more positive note, Tamarack still enjoys your company. Sure you aren’t that social but you would never say half the stuff you say to strangers to her.
You and Tamarack go out at night and clean graffiti and collect trash as a ‘reverse vandalism’ and you insult people who litter etc.
Tamarack one day does want to see a positive change in you , but for now it’s just the two of you.

omg i've been thinking about writing ol2 stuff im glad you asked even if its vague <3 also!! perhaps unrelated but needing to be said: i am NOT writing smut/nsfw for qiu + tama right now until at least the step 3 beta is released. #1 bc i want them to be 18+ in game #2 i want to have a better feel for them. but i'm happy to write fluff and dating/crush hc's n drabbles until then <3

you're the only person besides tamarack that qiu trusts and considers his dearest friend
but you're also his crush and it's hard sometimes...
on one hand, you're so sweet and caring
and you take care of him, even if you don't know how to comfort him you offer him a shoulder to cry on and a place to clear their thoughts
but on the other hand you're so beautiful/handsome and the way you look at them has qiu about to fly away from the butterflies
as you're growing up, qiu spends a lot of time with you.
i can see them sneaking into your room or throwing a couple pebbles to have you sneak out the front door
and you watch the stars together, all curled up together because it's cold and you only had half the mind to bring your blanket, which wasn't nearly enough
and even though your little midnight trips are frequent, neither of you prepare for the next.
and perhaps you're both "forgetting" a blanket on purpose so that way you have an excuse to cuddle up together, but who's to say?
no matter if you're shy or bold, there's this song and dance between you and qiu.
the longing glances across the room...
qiu flushes up to his ears, something he tries to hide by tugging at their long hair
and if you're feeling mischievous, you'll wink at him or perhaps you'll flutter your eyelashes at him, giving him a teasing smirk with a tantalizing stare.
or the way your hand lingers on his arm, making soothing circles with your thumb
you throw in an occasional heart, but with no way to trace the small action, qiu just flushes and stares blankly at his ceiling during the night wondering if it even happened
you two also hold hands whenever possible
only if there's a reason to of course
like crossing the road, very dangerous!
or walking on a log, you could fall into a pile of leaves!!!
so it's up to qiu to hold your hand and if he doesn't let go even when Tama is around, well you didn't let go either so why are you scolding him?!
mmm, if your hands were cold they would put your hand into his pocket and cover it with his own warmer ones
or even better, if you're parting and you came to school with cold hands, they would give your their gloves and pat your hands together
qiu doesn't particularly like jewelry, but if you gave him a piece of jewelry they'd wear it pretty often
especially if it's made by you
wouldn't wear it to school too often just in case it got ruined

think abt confessing to qiu while you're having one of your lil midnight excursions
you're on the floor of one of your bedrooms, or perhaps the forset floor I can't decide

Tamarack: I feel like when it's winter, she craves that autumn feeling, so she'll play games like these.

Between step 2 and 3 Darcie got asked out on a date by a someone she met online. She got stood up and It turned out to be a prank made by some of her classmate. She felt so ashamed that day she didn't told it to anyone. All Qiu could remember from that day was the smell in her room with all the product she used to change her face. They liked her face, most important he liked HER.

A/N: omgomgomg OL2 ask yay!!! I’ll give you a little treat for the long wait and include both of them :3 I decided to go with step 3 because I like the idea of them being able to handle it a bit more maturely. Qiu "Autumn" Lin ~
Honestly? I imagine Qiu as a bit of a golden retriever in step 3, considering they finally feel comfortable with themselves.
Back in the step 2 era you never really had to think about Qiu leaving you behind since it was made obviously clear that if you weren’t in then you were out.
Now though?
It’s no surprise that Qiu is popular. They’ve been popular forever. Now they’ve opened up again and are the ‘magnanimous top dog’ of Golden Grove.
It’s a little harder to remain cool when you’re interrupted in almost every moment you two spend together.
It feels like everyone HAS to get their daily dose of interacting with him.
The already steaming pot of emotions bubbled over when you were late to lunch one day and found a girl way too close to Qiu..
How are you supposed to react? Your anxiety about being an inadequate partner was telling you to run off and find solace in loneliness or Tamarack, but your clinginess was screaming about everything.
You ended up just standing there until Qiu noticed, saying goodbye before jogging over to where you were standing.
You were considerably more clingy than you had been from that point on.
You’d text him at least once at any moment, checking your phone constantly and anxiously. You’d volunteer to go everywhere and anywhere with Qiu, not letting them get a word in before you joined.
Who doesn’t follow their partner on social media? Who doesn’t obsessively check their page to see if there’s anything – anyone – new there?
Don’t forget all the talk about being together forever. You debated proposing at graduation, but they chuckled and said that would be too much to celebrate in one day.
It’s meant well at first. They barely notice the change in your relationship. Qiu just figured that you were extra in love.
You, on the other hand, were just anxious and worried and always thinking that you had to prove to Qiu that you were good enough, even if they always greeted and parted with a sweet kiss.
It all comes to a head when they left to go ‘hang out with a friend in town’ and you nearly burst into jealous tears.
You called him not even thirty minutes later to ‘chat.’ Qiu was a little confused and hung up rather quickly after saying they’d be back later that night.
When he finally showed up you practically threw their jacket off and checked for any signs that someone else had done something to him. Your anxiety about being cheated on had been chewing away at you all evening.
Qiu actually pushed you away and asked what was wrong and why you had been acting so weird, and that’s when the dam broke and you started crying. You pathetically all your swirling, anxious thoughts.
When your tears finally stopped coming you looked at them expecting anger or annoyance, but all you were met with was gentleness as they pulled you into their arms and started whispering to you about how much they loved you and how you were all he ever needed to feel loved.
From that point on, they always paid a little extra attention to the little details in your body language and mood.
They also never failed to (gently) let you know when you started to go a bit overboard with your fears, always being sure to reassure and remind you that you can always let them know how you feel.
Qiu is ALWAYS touching you in some way whenever he’s with you too. Your bringing up your anxieties highlighted his own about feeling like he wasn’t doing enough for you.
Hand holding, soothing and well-timed kisses, an arm around your shoulder, clothing swaps, the list goes on.
If you aren’t really a fan of PDA, believe that they’re always standing more than a little close when they notice your mood shift. They’ll also give you a quick peck when no one’s looking, or even lace your pinkies together.
Cuddles are the time when he really lays it on thick, hands caressing your back and lips brushing against you, gentle words of comfort falling from his lips.
There are times when Qiu has to be firm with boundaries or remind you that it’s good for you to do things on your own.
It’s a bit of a hurdle, but eventually, you start to unwind from the clingy and anxious habits.

Tamarack Baumann ~
Tamarack hasn’t ever really been as outgoing as Qiu until maybe step 3, and even that is a stretch. Tbh I see her as someone who’s accepted friends into her circle as they come, rather than go looking for them.
Also, with the kind of person she is, I imagine you’re clingy because of your anxiety.
With Tamarack I feel like you’d be a little more direct and less secretive/guilty about it.
She’s always given off the aura of understanding, a friend first and foremost above all else.
You’d be anxious over her finding someone better of course, especially if you two didn’t partake in the same hobbies. What if she meets someone who aligns with her more than you ever will, despite your years of history?
Tamarack is strangely perceptive though. An attribute of living with her strangely vague and indirect grandparents?
Whatever it is, your anxieties never really go unnoticed despite your efforts.
“Hey (Y/N), what’s on your mind?”
There are some things that go unnoticed until it comes to a head of course – especially your clinginess. Tamarack’s been known you for years, at some point your habits would become a lot less noticeable.
You’d ask her a lot about her day. What did she do? Who did you hang out with? Where were you?
It was never meant to be suffocating at all, and for a while it hadn’t been.
Tamarack herself hadn’t picked up on the way your behaviors were affecting her until her omi made a small comment on how funny it was that recently she’d started talking about everything she’d done that day at the table again. She hadn’t done that since the beginning of middle school.
For a while, it kept Tamarack thinking. What made her start all that again? Why did she feel a little guilty if she didn’t tell you something? More and more thoughts ran through her head until she realized your behavior was the cause.
She wasn’t mad about it at all though. Maybe a little bit annoyed that she hadn’t caught on sooner, but it was more sympathetic emotions than any other kind.
On one of your pre-planned hangout days, she figures it’s time to address everything going on, even if it isn’t easy.
She sits you both down with some tea and snacks outside like usual when she brings it up. When she did, she noticed that even you were shocked.
It took some time working past the initial wall of denial and anxiety, however, you both reached a comfortable point in your conversation where Tamarack suggested things that she hopes will help you rely on her a little less. You also become able to communicate with her much healthier than you had been.
She’s always here for you, just remember that other people are too and that there are plenty of activities to do together and separately.
With time she notices you’re a lot less codependent, and she makes sure to tell you how proud she is of you for it.
My personal HC is that Tamarack is a little awkward with PDA and affection in general, so that’s why there’s a lot less of that in here. It’s also another reason I could imagine you being so clingy and anxious about your relationship.
Despite her difficulty with affection, she remembers some of your own soul-searching you did before confessing that you wish she was a little more affectionate.
With time, you both reach a much better point of both communication and satisfaction in the relationship. You’ve been doing a little more things on your own or with others which helps quiet your still-standing thoughts, and Tamarack has slowly nudged her way into a level of affection that felt just right with plenty of room for improvement.
Relationships are always in a growing stage, just like people are too. If either of you starts slipping up, it’s reassuring to know that while you won’t be coddled and held the entire way, there’s a hand willing to help you up and brush off the dust from the fall.
