Sorry for the watermark, but I just had to snip this absolutely adorable moment from "Into the Light" from the 2019 Tokaigi concert. To me, it almost looked like a private little dance between them; like Marina did a little curtesy, and then Pearl a little bow, like she was inviting Marina to dance . . . but then, given the conversation that followed the song, I think it was actually a little pantomime of how Marina tried to introduce herself to Pearl when they first met (when she didn't speak Inkling yet), and Pearl invited Marina to come with her so she could show Marina Inkling culture (despite not speaking Octarian herself)!

Well, regardless of what that adorable little bit was, things certainly did get kinda intimate for a moment there 🩵🩷

i have no idea about anything that happens in splatoon but can u please tell me about those two pearl and marina bitches theyre so funny

unfortunately for you its late so i will not be going into the full splatoon super fan mode for this explanation(lying).

Okay so Marina and Pearl are the idols for Splatoon 2 together they make the duo Off the Hook. Pearl raps (MC Princess) and Marina djs (DJ Hyperfresh). We actually know very little about Marinas past in comparison to other idols outside of her being a Very smart and capable soldier/engineer (she was building weapons of war dw abt it) but Pearl comes from a super unfathomably rich family and was a punk/metal singer prior to Off the Hook (her notable song from that time being called 'Fuckin Dudes Be Fuckin Sleepin' im not censoring that) Marina met Pearl after leaving the army, after some weeks gave her the demo for a song she made called Ebb & Flow and Pearl was like let's make music and that was their first song. (the full 'Fly Octo Fly ~ Ebb & Flow' sounds better to me personally but whatev) The idols from Splat 1 Callie and Marie (Squid Sisters) are I believe formally trained singers/dancers and in comparison Off the Hook were described as being naturally talented. Further while the Squidsters are meant to be rivals (represented by a Fox and Tanuki) Off the Hook are supposed to have an incredibly close and strong bond (represented by a Crane and a Turtle) the final splatfests for both of these games also reflect this (though ironically Rina and Pearl are also partially based on Biggie and Tupac) Pearl is the more brash and outgoing of the 2 where Marina is more shy. They have the most synergy of all the idols I think. It comes through in their music, art, and dialogue/interactions and that's what makes them so enjoyable <:] That's all I'm giving for lore but for fun facts outside of what I've already mentioned

Pearl's voice can cause shockwaves that cause mass destruction (in 'Fuckin Dudes Be Fuckin Sleepin' you can hear glass somewhere shatter at the end bc of this)

Marina likes to draw and makes shoujo manga (or has made at least one titled Dear Pearl)

Marina designed the collection of 24 splatfest stages/maps called Shifty Stations which use octarian tech as well as the Flooder (the Shifty Station stages are named after different western novels in english and shoujo manga in japanese)

Pearl has a custom weapon called the Princess Cannon (which aids in the previously mentioned mass destruction)

There's Off the Hook branded cereal and plushies in the splatooniverse

In jpn lyrics to Off the Hook's songs are written in katakana(Rina) and hiragana(Pearl) because in world they're singing in different languages. Some game dialogue is like this also.

Suffer no Fools

Gonna ramble about Suffer no Fools under the cut. A copy-paste of what I wrote on my comment on youtube. Highly recommend listening to it.

My favorite part about this song is how Off the Hook is schooling Fire & Ice, literally teaching them how it's done.

Starting with Pearl v Frye

Pearl opens slow and simply, taunting Frye into losing her temper. Frye's a great performer, but lacks presence, and Pearl is great at getting a reaction. By cutting her off, she forces Frye to be more aggressive and more vocally forward, which Pearl acquiesces to, going at Frye's pace, matching the rhythm of the song like Frye does, fishing for the Marina insult with the "where's your buddy". Then, when fry does try and take a pot-shot, Pearl uses the advantage to hype Marina up with the fastest and hardest line in the song, baiting one more insult to transition to the chorus (sung by Marina primarily) with even more hype.

Pearl goes through the entire verse showcasing how Frye is out of her league, while demonstrating how to set up a killer song: play along, hype yourself up, and target you attacks specifically to get the best reaction. You come across as more confident and more competent through this.

Then we get to Shiver v Marina In contrast to Pearl, Shiver starts horribly.

She tries to lean into her country gimmick by passive-aggressively mocking Marina while making fun of her singing style, but does so in such a way that both sounds terrible and makes her seem less aggressive. In a rap battle. Again, terrible start. Marina takes advantage of this by keeping the vibes going and showing off at the same time, countering the passive-aggressive lines with her own, more subtle ones, all while singing the same tune in her usual, inkredible, fashion. As such, she not only sounds better, and states she can do whatever Shiver does, but better, she also retroactively has Shiver making a fool of herself, which Shiver doubles down on by telling Marina to stop copying her, as Marina had baited her to do. Marina mostly obliges, by singing a more complex and auditorially interesting line than Shiver's more by-the-beat verse, flourishing her lines with a soulful high note before a syncopated stop at the end, all while maintaining that passive aggressive style (it also functions as a "yeah, I am better at this than you are" in conjunction with the "stop copying me" line). The moment Shiver says she's heard enough, referencing the time while also mocking Marina's long-winded verses (finally using that passive aggressive style to her advantage), Marina drops the facade, sounding stronger and directly telling Shiver that she ain't done, only for Pearl to interject with a "had enough yet?" simultaneously mocking Shiver's earlier line about it getting late, playing to her attention-seeking persona and heavy boasting, and disengaging Marina, which gives the impression that Marina was holding back the whole time and was about to let loose on a Shiver. This also reframes Shiver's earlier line as her giving up.

Basically, Shiver got brutalized in this battle, and only has herself to blame. Meanwhile, Marina comes across as a genius to those who get it, and adorable to those who don't. She couldn't have come out of the verse looking bad.

Effectively, Off the Hook used this as both a means of maintaining their own hype, while simultaneously needling at the new kid's flaws, and following with examples of how to effectively use their own styles, plus how to effectively rap battle.

It also shows Off the Hook's skill both as a team and individually. Pearl can play the hypeman and abrasive teacher that she excels at, while Marina can be passive and throw ruthless counterattacks while still coming across as sweet. As a team, they run the conversation, with Pearl leading the tone, even when she's off the mic, and serving as the bridge to Marina, who dominates the song via her constant presence in the chorus and instrumentals. Everyone's mind is on them while Shiver and Frye don't even interact. Frye refuses to mention Shiver, even when brought up, while Shiver's verse is entirely focused on (unsuccessfully) dissing Marina. They come across as disoriented and isolated compared to their opponents, who work as well together as a married couple (which they might as well be).

There's a reason everyone says Off the Hook wins in a landslide.

So here’s something I was thinking about. The Bonus Track in Octotune starts with Pearl and Marina in the studio recording the rap part of Into the Light, and Pearl flubs her take (which really amuses Marina, it's very cute).

But here's the thing: this is very uncharacteristic of Pearl.

As per Marina in her Splatune 2 interview, Pearl usually does her raps in a single perfect take, sometimes two if necessary. Also per the same interview, the one time Marina remembers Pearl ever hesitating or getting nervous while recording is when they recorded the chorus for Ebb & Flow, their first ever song together - they needed a lot of takes for that one.

Marina speculates Pearl may have been worried about not singing properly. And yeah, for sure, Pearl has been a little less confident about her vocals vs her rap until rather recently so that tracks. But also, it feels like she wanted to make sure Off the Hook’s first single together was absolutely perfect. Because not only was their career hanging on this one track being successful, but also, Pearl admires and respects Marina so much, and Ebb & Flow is her baby, and Pearl wouldn’t have wanted to mishandle something so important to her new bandmate, she had to get it JUST RIGHT.

And I think Pearl flubbed that take for Into the Light for the same reason she needed so many takes when they did Ebb & Flow, because Into the Light is EXTRA IMPORTANT to them. Pearl and Marina wrote this song because of the events of Octo Expansion, for their new friend Eight, but also I feel as kind of as something between the two of them? What happened during Octo Expansion recontextualized their friendship, took down so many barriers and misconceptions between them and made them stronger together, and you can really hear that manifest in Into the Light. They both get so emotional after performing it live, and Pearl mentions it reminds her of when they first met, it's so special to them! So it makes sense she would take recording it even more seriously than usual!

Seriously, she flubs the RAP part!!! THE RAP PART!!! That's the part she never has any issues with EVER!!! And she flubs it!!! Because she's so nervous about it being perfect!!!

Into the Light is just so important you guys I'm cry

(also as a side note Marina getting all giggly after Pearl flubs her take while Pearl is all grumpy and annoyed about it is the cutest shit)

The tuning up of a soul, Chapter 3: The Ghost’s Lamentations

Nothing ever seemed to work whenever Pearl wrote a song or the lyrics for someone else's. Maybe… maybe they were right, she really didn't have talent, she's just a small, lucky and spoiled brat that tries with all of her hearts to become a huge icon. Maybe it's a one of a kind gift that only some people had, like the Squid Sisters. Between her envy, she deeply admired them, for their simple but engaging singing style, and the strong sibling-like bond they had. If they started from nothing and reached the stars by singing an old piece at a contest in the wasteland that is the Calamari County, then she could do it too, right?

Despite the fact that her family was from there too, the only thing of note she did in her childhood during that time was destroying the entire equipment of the youth singing contest she attended. It was even going well, her song was winning the audience, but by getting excited she hit just one note higher than the rest, and everything went wrong. Her parents paid for all the damages, and she cried for days about it, hating herself for being a literal living banshee.

"Maybe I need a partner." she once thought, but never willing to truly admit it; her Ego was twice as high as her own height.

Two troubled souls, bound together by fate, thanks to an Inkantation: Marina Ida, a deserter full of regrets that tries desperately to discover herself in the new world that is the surface, and Pearl Houzuki, a bratty rich kid who wants to prove to the world that money can’t buy talent. Pearl is there! She is having a time all right

Pearl woke up and was going to greet someone good morning, only to remember she lives alone. It slips her mind as she gets ready for the day. Pearl woke up with a longing for a name on the tip of her tongue, for a face that’s just out reach.

She keeps looking to the side to tell a joke, or give commentary, nobody is there, why would there be? A flash of teal in the corner of her eye causes her to search for who’s wearing it, it’s never the right person, who is the right person?

She finds herself waiting for someone to step through the door and help when she’s stuck on lyrics. Getting more food than she can eat, setting the table for 2, asking for the second opinion of someone who she can’t name.

Then the clues started, they strung her along. Mount Nantai is where you met her. Pearl went there, nobody was waiting, why would she be waiting? You started a band with her, what’s it called? Off.. off the something, you can’t recall, but you want to make it again. You became the reporters for Inkopolis news with her, you wrote songs, you lived in the same house, you care deeply about her. Who is she? What is her name? You want to remember the name of your partner.

Finally, a clue that lead to a sewer drain made its appearance, it confused her but she recognized the area nonetheless. There’s an old cabin, and a table with people surrounding it. You see her, and you remember.

Marina, the one you love.

And Marina was being sad. She can’t even get close to contacting Pearl because how do you contact one of the richest people in the city?

Once reunited, they do reform Off the Hook, and using their already made songs, plus new ones, they manage to retake their place as reporters for the news in time for Splatoon 2.

Russia, Israel and sharks

During history classes i think we all were thinking just how could have people been so cruel and dumb back in the day, salting the land, burning towns on the enemies land, targetting people based on the association of ethnicity. And everyone in the classroom was relieved how lucky it is that we are not that backwards anymore in the civilised world and age. We were also shocked how could everyone have gone mad and how the world turned upisde down during the 40 all over europe and asia. It must have been the genious manipulation of propaganda.

But no, we have to admit sadly that they didnt had to do much if anything, most people simply are just like that, they barely need a push to sucumb to that way of thinking, it doesnt take years of propaganda, but about 5 minutes of news.

A few months ago a man in egypt was eaten by a shark, the video is quiet disturbing, but then it came out that he was russian, living in egypt for about 4 years. And twitter immediately become full with such tweets:

And hundreds of extremely distastefull and sadistic comments celebrating this. If someone questioned them, they just wrote how many ukrainian died in the war if they even responded something coherent. When questioned what did he had to do with any of that, the best they could say is that well russians are evil annyway and he propably supported putin too. Its good that there is one less of them.

War footages were also all over social media, i saw a few where they put loony toons sound effects over deaths, of course bright text made it clear that those were russian soldiers (othervise no one could even tell) and you can have the luxury of laughing at it guilt free instead of virtously clutching your pearls. The ones where someone got bombed while taking a piss or sleeping got particularly many likes and retweets.

Collective punishment and gladiator games, things we tought we abandoned centuries ago, but it didnt even took anything for peole to immediately re embrace it with open arms.

At this point we have to admit that the reason for this is that its just simply part of human nature (not that) deep down. Wich makes sense after all. Humans have been existing for about 300 000 years, but we had our current socially acceptable moral system for about a hundred. Playing civilisation for a few centuries arent gonna be enough to weed out the instinctual cavemen out of us. Wich reminded me to this song by MARINA, "savages", it hit the nail on the head perfectly:

And while maybe war footage is not being shared here, this kind of behavior is definitely not absent from tumblr either.

By the way, talking about ukrain and russia, what do you even know about them? What is the diference between the two? The average internet activist couldnt have been able to point it out on a map before the war. Arent all the news regarding ukrain were talking about how the far right is on the rise in there? But suddenly it become my little UwU ukrain once the war started. My point is that for the avegare person around the world the only diference between the two nation is that one happened to attack the other not the other way around. If history would have went a bit diferently, now you all were laughing at the death of those same poor ukrainian soldiers.

I saw once a tweet made by a guy who just found out that many ukrainians, especially in the army, are deeply religious, and the country is very conservative, and said that he isnt sure he can fully support them anymore lmao.

It was also very cringe how everyone who didnt even heard about Zelensky before started to simp for a random middle eastern politican and made heroic edits about him for the sole virtue of getting attacked, its embarrassing at best.

Did you knew that he was in the panama papers by the way?

And now again with the conflict between israel, palestine and hamas. People just cant behave civilised.

I dont know what is so hard about simply having multiple opinions at the same time, you can easily agree that Palestine should be freed from Israel's influence while also condemning HAMAS.

Many people have been taking off their masks and it often comes from the most suprising groups.

I couldnt have belived that the time comes when people here will support a far right religious fundamentalist terror group.

Yes i can, for example rape, mowing down civilians and parading their bodies like trophies are simply just not part of any military operation and you shouldnt do it, idk why it is a controverial opinion currently.

Episode 4 Thoughts: Basket Fish is a Nice Guy, Somehow

Whoa boy this episode. This episode is amazing! As always.

First of all - no surprise here anymore, but Polpota looks absolutely beautiful! Every location is again lovingly drawn and more than ever I wish I could visit that seaside town.

Also, our Mystery Blue Jumi is revealed to be the Sapphire Jumi, Sappho! We do actually get that name in the game, the gates in the Bejewled City are named after him, so that's a neat callback. The other Mystery Blue Jumi in the opening is also named, she's Marina, and though it's not stated I'm guessing she's an aquamarine Jumi based off her name.

I'll talk more about Sappho in a bit, but I really did like how this episode was structured.

They introduce Basket Fish as how he is in the game - a lecherous slimeball who looks down on all other people and calls them plebs. But! They actually made it so that there is more to him than meets the eye, I'm quite surprised.

They wrote this episode in a way that lessened the focus on the shipwreck investigation, since Shiloh and Boyd are at Polpota because they know Sandra is targeting the Blue Eye. They actually cut out the whole ghost business too. But they still gave justice to Thoma, here we get to actually hear how he feels and it is heartbreaking to see how desperate he was to find out how Thona died. So even if it's a pretty minimal role, you get to feel for him, and hey, he gets his peace at least.

They also do show in the anime that Elle's song did have the traditional siren effect in that her song caused the ship's crew to lose their senses and they ended up crashing into a rock because of it. I wonder if they will feature her again in this anime, though? Her questline is one of my favorites and I would think a lot of fans agree, but as considering how long the Jumi arc already is, it would be difficult to put it in without taking away too much screen time. But I hope, they adapt the other main arcs too and maybe we'll get to see Elle's story sometime. If it becomes an OVA, I would be so happy.

Oh, and yes, we get to see Elle in this episode!...before a lot of trouble comes to her, poor girl, but at least she looks happy here.

After Thona hears about the shipwreck, Boyd and Shiloh come in and find that Basket Fish is holding the Blue Eye, and he finally spills on why he has it. In the game, he was said to have inherited it, so I assumed it was a heirloom thing.

Here, however, the Blue Eye has a different story.

Basket Fish instead used to be a normal guy when one day he comes across an unconscious Jumi on the shore - and contrary to how we've seen him all this time, he's pretty nice, looking after Sappho even though the latter is very quiet and doesn't say much.

So, Sappho - here we meet our first (and perhaps the last) named male Guardian Jumi. We know the roles aren't tied to gender, seeing as Blackpearl is one of the strongest Jumi knights, but it's still good to see an actual male Guardian, since all the Guardians we see in game are female characters (Pearl, Florina, Esmeralda, Diana).

We also hear about Sappho's Knight, Marina. Unfortunately, going by the flashback she was already killed when she fended off a Jumi hunter to save him, and that was how he ended up washing up on Polpota's shores.

Poor Sappho seems to feel guilty, not because he lost his knight while he ran away, but because he never opened up to her like he did with Basket Fish. We also got see how he pays back Basket Fish's kindness and explains how he got so rich - he used his core's power to find sunken treasure, and that is how Basket Fish became wealthy. But, Sappho knowing he would be defenseless without a Jumi Knight, he instead entrusts his core to Basket Fish, so that at least the person who gets his core is a friend and not just some Jumi Hunter.

I imagine that would be pretty shocking, nursing someone back to health, being friends with them, and bam! The guy pulls his heart out and hands it to you. No wonder Basket Fish didn't want to let the Blue Eye go in Sappho's memory.

Back to the plot, I was wondering if they would do the Inspector Boyd switch, but nah, they made it so that Sandra disguised herself as Revanshe. It's a bit more believable for her to pull off, to be fair. It's still hilarious that she can transform into her thief attire with a swirl of a cloak, but I suppose that could be her special power as Alexandrite :b Magical wardrobe change seems to be her specialty anyway.

So she swipes the jewel and once again throws Shiloh into a wall, poor guy. Though, it's still a sweet detail that Shiloh checks on Basket Fish and promises to return the jewel before they give chase.

I appreciate that they show an actual physical fight between Sandra and Shiloh since in the game Sandra pretty much just sics Jewel Beasts on you. And boy we get to see that she can actually fight! No surprise given her former identity as a Jumi knight. Poor Shiloh gets beaten up for the third episode in a row and this time he has it especially hard. Thank goodness Serafina comes in to save him.

I wonder though, does Sandra have history with Serafina? She seemed reluctant to fight after seeing her and instead flees shortly after Serafina comes in. Could be that she was just reluctant to fight even more people, but it's still a strange reaction.

It's a shame though, I was hoping to see Serafina jump into a fight, but we'll have other chances.

Poor Shiloh though. The episode concludes with Boyd worried for him and saying he would have to stop Shiloh from joining the Jewel Thief investigations as it is too dangerous. Which isn't wrong...

Gahh, it keeps getting better and better! I'm guessing next episode is a breather one where Shiloh rests up and has to make up his mind whether to continue associating with Jumi business. I guess Serafina will be staying over too, since she's the one who's going to take him back to Domina.

And then we'll probably get the Looking Glass Tower soon. But that's just my guessing.

there’s only one thing i think of when i think about loudness in this world

they’ve only known each other a handful of weeks in this one, which is why marina doesn’t speak very well yet

also writing pearl without a sailor mouth is...difficult. probably bc i have one myself, lol

“Alright, lemme show you how this works, k?” Pearl said, as she inserted a credit into the machine. “You give it one of those, you pick the song with this,” she pointed the remote at the TV, “and you sing. That easy.”

She picked one of the microphones out of its stand and held it out to Marina, who nodded at her and took it. She blew into it, then turned it on and blew again, that time satisfied with the result.

“Any requests?” Pearl asked, picking up the other microphone.

“Re-kest?”

“Dude, what d’ya wanna sing? We got some Raft Punk, Diss-Pair - Squid Squad’s got a sorta easy metal song, y’wanna do that?”

Marina stared blankly at Pearl.

“Ok...I’ll pick first.” Pearl flicked through the selection. “Here, Metalopod’s pretty good, we’ll start there.”

The screen lit up with “MUSIC” and the song began. Pearl started tapping her foot to the killer drum beats and guitar riffs. Within twenty seconds “MUSIC” was replaced with lyrics, white then changing color to yellow.

Marina didn’t usually have a particularly terrible time understanding Pearl, but the words she was singing were nigh incomprehensible. The on-screen lyrics might have helped, but she wasn’t as familiar with Inklish text as she’d like to have been. Still, Pearl was a pretty decent singer. Marina smiled at the short squid. This “start a band” thing was going to be fantastic.

And then the chorus started.

Marina threw her microphone at the karaoke machine and shoved her fingers in her ears as Pearl belted out earth-shattering notes. The microphone in her hand popped and the TV turned to static. Marina fell to the floor in a ball as the speakers hooked up to the monitor blew out. She would have sworn the room was actually shaking from the sheer magnitude of Pearl’s voice.

The music came to an early end long before Pearl realized what she’d done. She ended her part of the chorus and went to breathe for the next part of the song, then stopped short and looked around at her work.

“Oops.”

“Ok, so that’s another karaoke bar I’m banned from. Man, I gotta get my own machine.”

Marina couldn’t take her eyes off Pearl as they walked down Conch Street, away from the wreckage she’d caused.

“Yeah, so when I said I don’t actually play a lot of venues...that’s kinda why. No one’s got good equipment.”

“The ‘quipment.” She’s blaming the equipment? Really?

“I haven’t found one place that actually has a mic that can handle me! The owners are always like ‘You’re too loud,’ or somethin’, well maybe your machines are too wimpy, ever think about that?” Pearl poutily shoved her hands in her jeans pockets and hunched across the intersection.

Marina played with her glove. “You’re good singer. Maybe try quieting…?”

“I’m not gonna just say my bars, Marina. I get in that zone, I’m not holding back! Takes away from my realness. You come for the authentic Pearl, none of that fake stuff.”

“I see.”

“That’d be like asking you not to spin sick beats, like, that doesn’t work!”

“Ok, I get.”

“Yeah.”

SIlence fell between them until they reached the intersection where their paths diverged. They bid each other goodnight and Marina headed home on her own.

If Pearl could do that to all the equipment in the karaoke room, then all their aspirations, not to mention Marina’s turntables, were in jeopardy.

Marina closed the door to her apartment and leaned against it, slid down the wall and sighed.

She wondered just how long the list of venues Pearl was banned from actually was. Would anyone in the city book them? How were they supposed to actually get their stuff out there if they couldn’t actually record? If this was how things were going to go, maybe they should throw it all in now.

“What are you saying?” Marina asked herself out loud. Throw it in? Give up?

She didn’t give up.

When her first attempts at flooders were spinning out of control, falling off platforms and completely drenching her test squadron, did she give up? No! She went back to the drawing board! She tuned them, she fixed their rotational speed, she adjusted their ink pressure! She made them work.

She wrote music by ear on a half-broken keyboard. She helped find the most efficient way to cultivate wasabi underground. She clawed her way up here to chase that something more she didn’t know she was missing.

A cacophonic inkling should be no problem at all.

Marina got to her feet and moved a stack of music sheets to uncover a pad of blueprint paper. She rummaged around a few piles of other nonsense to find the microphone that the seller of the old turntables threw in. On her tiny kitchen table she found a nubby pencil.

Vowing to spend time cleaning the apartment...eventually, Marina got to work.

“So it’s like a fancy pop filter?” Pearl asked, turning the microphone over in her hands.

Marina blinked sleepily at her. “Yeh.”

“Sweet. Turn this sucker on, test it out!” Pearl plugged the device into an amp in her recording studio. Marina made no attempt to hide her fingers going right back in her ears. “Marina, have some faith in yourself. If this works, you’re a genius!”

“If.”

Pearl turned the microphone on and mulled over what she should sing. After a few seconds, she shrugged. “Imma just freestyle. Can I get a beat, DJ?”

Marina started drumming slowly on the table. Pearl bobbed her head to the rhythm and started.

“Yo, check it, got a brand new mic, yeah, my partner made it and it feels alright, yeah / not gonna break $#!%, not gonna get banned, look out Inkopolis, cause here the #$@* comes our band!”

The noise levels still hurt Marina’s ears, but the world wasn’t shaking - only the amp, and maybe the lights. Noise-cancelling earphones were easier to get her hands on than noise cancelling amplifiers.

Pearl shook a tentacle out of her face and looked Marina dead in the eyes. “Test one two?” she said in an indoor voice. Both their faces broke into huge grins as they realized the words were coming out of the amp and not just Pearl’s mouth.

Pearl threw her hands in the air and let out a whoop. “Told you you’re a genius!” she yelled, throwing her arm around Marina’s shoulders. “Girl, this city isn’t gonna know what hit it! Could even polish those bars, maybe fix ...Marina?”

Pearl shook Marina’s arm and she jerked back to reality. “Yeah?”

“Alright, dude, let’s let that big brain of yours rest a bit, you can use my room, I’ll keep my brothers away.” She laid the microphone on the table, pulled Marina to her feet and led her out the door and up the stairs to the main house.

“Hey, so, like, I don’t wanna ask too much of you right now, but you think you can make a headset model? Obvs not this second, but like, one of these days?”

Marina yawned. “I look what I can do.”

(Oof, sorry about the long post.) Transcript under cut.

Marina’s Letter:

Dear Senpai,

Where do I even begin? We’ve been through a lot together ever since we first met on Mt. Nantai. My entire world changed that day, literally. You’ve taught me so many different things through the years – like how ice cream is infinitely better than cake or that it’s possible for a small Inkling to sink an entire cruise ship with her voice alone. And you also taught me a lot about things like trust, about opening up, about how to talk to someone.

You taught me a lot of Inkling. But you know, no matter how many words I learn, I can’t seem to find the right ones I want to say to you. It’s funny. We talk to each other daily, yet I feel like there’s so much more that I want to tell you. You’ve always been better at written expression than I have – the lyrics you wrote to all our songs are bomb, seriously. I’m not sure how to describe how inkredible you are. I guess there aren’t enough words to describe how I feel about you because just words don’t do you justice. Still, I want to try my best to compose my emotions in this letter to you. The final Splatfest is coming up and I’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve been through.

I can’t tell how grateful I am to have met someone as wonderful as you. When I had nowhere to go, you opened your home to me. You showed me kindness, and you showed me warmth. Whenever I was lost, you helped me open my eyes. You showed me how grand and amazing the world could be. When I felt like I had no one in the world to turn to, you were there and you opened your arms to me. You showed me all the most beautiful things life had to offer. You gave me everything *you* had to offer.

You always know how to cheer me up. You always know how to bring a smile to my face. You always know how to make me laugh. You also know how to annoy me at any given moment, but still, I’ve always had fun with you around. I never get tired of being with you. Life hasn’t always been easy, but having you around always made it easier to get through. Sure, we’ve had our rough patches, but everything that we’ve been through— the good and the bad— I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world.

My time with you is the most valuable thing in this entire universe. You are the most important person in my life. I treasure each and every moment with you; you make each and every day an adventure. I know you’re not a fan of reading novels, so I’ll cut it here. I think I’m starting to get a little too emotional now anyways, haha.
