“I’m wearing a Callipygian mesh long sleeve, Octavia Banks top, Pleats Please skirt-pants, Nike Air Rifts, Patagonia Rhythm fleece, and silver necklaces that I made. People in my life wouldn’t expect this, but I’m rather shy – I think my personal style is inspired by an appreciation for craft because I’ll lose all inhibition and nerd out about the materials, processes, and design of the clothes I choose to wear with anyone who will listen.”

Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
Here is an inconvenient truth. For all the noise made by activists, journalists, politicians and even celebrities about the clothing industry destroying the planet, shoppers aren’t listening.
The information is out there if they want it. Google can produce more than 88 million search results on why fashion is bad for the environment, but the world remains in a state of cognitive dissonance, fueled by its voracious appetite for disposable trends. Global apparel consumption, currently at 62 million tons per year, is by some estimates projected to reach 102 million tons annually by 2030.
One problem, say many industry observers, is that much of the messaging about fashion and sustainability can be too boring, too preachy and too easy to ignore. So is it possible to change the way we talk about it?
This week, the outdoor apparel brand Patagonia released a quirky new film that reflects the company’s efforts to reset the conversation. “The Shitthropocene,” a 45-minute documentary directed by David Garrett Byars, is a trippy mock anthropological view of humanity’s consumption habits from our cave-dwelling ancestors through the trendsetting aristocratic court of Louis XIV, creepy fairgrounds, fishing waders with leaky crotches, mindless digital advertising and pretty much everything in between. It will be shown in Patagonia stores across the United States in coming months.
Here's the link to The Shitthropocene. It's about 45 minutes long. Or if you want to watch it now, here you go:

okay so i ordered my niece’s (combined xmas and) bday gift from patagonia last week and well. i wasn’t gonna put $15 for shipping without seeing if there might be anything else i could add to the order. so in addition to an absolutely adorable pink furry friends bunting for baby, i bought—for myself—a patagonia ball cap and two shirts that were on sale: one the women’s farrier shirt, which is great and i like it very much; and (finally) a women’s fjord flannel. i’ve been wanting a fjord flannel for so long but they’re so expensive… but this one was $54 instead of $125! do i got it. and oh my god i love it as much as i right i would. i never wanna take it off. literally wore it yesterday and am wearing it again today

A little reminder that if you like Patagonia, Patagonia has a used gear and clothing store too. Where you can buy used jackets, fleeces, sweaters, shorts and pants.

Patagonia, 47 N Fair Oaks Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103

I’ve never shopped at any Patagonia for myself but I’ve been in a few with other people, Patagonia wearers. Mr. Froyo is from Ventura and interestingly, that’s where Patagonia was founded in 1973. I noticed some of the t-shirts and jeans said Ventura on them. He has a few Patagonia items and I used to flip through the catalogs he received. We’ve also been to the original location in Ventura many times.
My impression is that their clothing is rugged and designed for serious outdoor activities like mountain climbing, rock climbing, canoeing, etc. and extreme weather conditions. Of course, you can always wear it as part of an active/outdoorsy “looking” lifestyle.
Mr. Froyo says the clothes are well made and last a long time. Most of the styles look the same season after season. There are those awful puffer jackets, as well as fleece, denim, t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, swimwear, shorts, running clothing, pants, and accessories (bags, belts, socks, bras, etc.). The Pasadena shop is a large one with multiple rooms and clothing for men, women and children. They even sell some food, books, mugs, towels, etc. The style reminds me of LL Bean but Patagonia is way more expensive.
Mr. Froyo loves the pants that he bought.
A Certified B corporation, they support various environmental causes and even make clothing out of recycled fabric from used Patagonia gear. They also sell patches so you can fix your gear yourself.

"Shopping for clothes is already intimidating. There are so many options and styles to consider, as well as factors like sustainability and ethics.
But for people in fat, disabled, or queer and gender-nonconforming bodies, it’s even more arduous.
Nico Herzetty, Emma K. Clark, and Paul Herzetty wondered: What if there was a way people could shop — not necessarily by color or size — but by measurements, materials, and ethics?
So they set off to create their website: Phoria.
Here, shoppers can set up a free profile, add their body measurements (and “typical fit challenges”) and peruse over 270 brands. Once these data points are entered, users can personalize their pages with “saved,” “recommended,” or “hidden” brands.
Pages can be totally private, or shared with the community to connect over styles and brands.
Aside from fit, brands in the Phoria database (which claims to be “the largest database of plus-friendly brands”) can also be filtered as “gender-neutral,” “woman-run,” “small business,” or “natural fibers.” Users can also filter for price, preferred styles, and more.

Some brands include popular names like Athleta, Levi’s, and Patagonia. Others are small businesses, like Beefcake Swimwear, or Hey Peach.
“For so many people, it feels too damn hard to find and keep clothing that fits in all the ways that really matter. So we’re doing something about it,” the Phoria website reads.
“Unlike most online shopping experiences, we center the needs of plus-size women, nonbinary, and trans people, and prioritize supporting clothing brands focused on sustainability, ethics, and inclusion.” ...
That team — made up of Clark, and Nico and Paul Herzetty — calls themselves “fat, disabled, and very, very queer.”
“These are some of the main ways we identify, and they’re qualities that have directly impacted our ability to get dressed every day in a way that feels good,” the Phoria team introduces themselves on the website.

In addition to catering the user experience to women, non-binary, and trans people, Phoria is also a benefit corporation, or a B corp.
“We’ve legally required ourselves to consider the interests of all our stakeholders — customers, employees, the planet, and our shareholders,” the Phoria website explains.
“Our specific public benefit purpose is to reduce people’s dependence on buying mass-produced items made in unsustainable ways and to use human-centered business models to boldly challenge economic systems of inequity.”
Right now, in the early stages of the company’s business, it doesn’t make any money.
“We’re focused on building something that genuinely solves plus-size people’s challenges around clothes shopping and supports smaller and more sustainable brands,” Phoria’s website states.
So, spreading the word seems to be of utmost importance...
Additionally, TikTok creators @couplagoofs (a queer couple named Morgan and Phoebe), recently shared a video in which they discovered Phoria. They met the website’s creators at a fat liberation event in their city and were introduced to the tool.
Quickly, commenters responded with gratitude and excitement.
“It is so disappointing to sort through pages of plus size clothes that aren’t even plus size,” a TikTok user commented. “This is gonna be such a good tool!”
Some even shared emotional responses, speaking to the need at the heart of Phoria’s mission.
“I’m… gonna cry,” another commenter wrote. “I’ve needed this my whole life.”"
