MOVIE MUSIC MONDAY
The full moon brings out the monster in you A strange tune seems to be playing for you
“Mad Monster Party” from Mad Monster Party? (1967) – performed by Ethel Ennis; music by Maury Laws, lyrics by Jules Bass
The title song from Mad Monster Party? is played over the opening credits, sung by jazz singer Ethel Ennis. Replete with blaring brass, stabs of percussion, and string flourishes, “Mad Monster Party” resembles a James Bond song due to its orchestration at times – especially when Ennis snarls the word “mad” in the lyrics. How appropriate for a growling, unorthodox accompaniment to a just-as unorthodox movie.
Mad Monster Party? – yes, there’s a question mark in the title – is a theatrical stop-motion animation film directed by Jules Bass and produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. The film follows Boris von Frankenstein (Boris Karloff in one of his final films), head of the “World Organization of Monsters”, summoning the likes of Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, and others due to his castle for a special announcement. Rankin/Bass were best known for their TV holiday specials, such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) and Frosty the Snowman (1969). For various reasons, Mad Monster Party? has been little-seen, gifting it a cult following for those who have seen it

It was like any other normal day only if you were in your home and not in another strange clan that you've never known except for stories and political talks.
You lay on the soft woven mat, made by your mate just for you, a hand on your swollen stomach as the life growing inside moves at its own pace while you rest from the tiredness that comes with.
»»————- 𑁍 ————-««
You and Neteyam mated right after he passed his Iknimaya, being the first in line to be the olo’eyktan and you to be his tsahik but it was all came crashing down when your father-in-law decided it was better to flee for the good of the clan and for the family as well.
It was the second month of your pregnancy when you had to leave your home forever, the strength of your mates arms held you up as you cried in his chest, hands shaking like a leaf as you watched Jake renounce his position as the Olo'eyktan to Terasem.
The tears in everyone's eyes, Neytiri’s sobs, Neteyam could only stroke the side of your head, pressing a kiss to your temple as he lead you to his Ikran “It'll be okay, Yawne, believe me, we'll be alright, I'll take care of you and our little one” he whispered comfortingly in your ear when you both mounted his Ikran and he placed you in front of him, your face towards him as he draped and covered you with his own shawl, he held you against his chest tightly before he took off with his family.
He had one hand on Seze’s reigns, controlling her moves through the air and the other on your back, under the shawl that was draped on your body, your face buried in his neck, your arms wrapped around his waist, so you could rest comfortably on the rough journey, he caressed patterns on your back as everyone flew more and more away from the forest until it was just the expanse of the water in front of them.
Neytiri kept glancing at her eldest son, pride blooming in her chest as she saw how much of gentleman her son is, the scene could only remind her of the time with Jake during the war, when they aligned all the clans, with a small smile she looked away, giving the couple some privacy as she moved closer to Jake's Ikran, bob, while running her hand through Tuk’s braids.
»»————- 𑁍 ————-««
It took a week or more to reach the metkayina clan, Awa’atlu, they accepted your Uthuru, with much criticism and nagging, but they did, it wasn't the same since then, there was always a deep feeling in the back of your mind, reminding you, again and again that something is wrong or would go wrong.
Even now, 4 months later, as you rested in the mauri with Neytiri on the other side making dinner while the others were out for their lessons, as Neytiri didn't willingly wanted to take the lessons and would rather look after you because it wasn't recommended for you to start your swimming lessons yet, she was always there for you, no matter what.
Even then, it's only been a month or two since Quaritch started his search spree across all the water Na'vi clans for Jake, that was the one thing everyone was alert for after Tonowari gave us the news, you didn't want to keep that in mind, not in your condition, not when it added to your ever growing worry.
Neteyam came back later, seemingly happy to see you resting on the mat he made, and because he loved the beautiful curve on your belly, the sign that his little baby grew safe and sound, he also knew that you didn't like the ocean as much as the trees back home but it was doable, plus he would rather have his baby in a safe environment than a hostile one, which was the only reason he loved this place, for the sake of his family's safety was all he cared about.
On a good day, you'd join the group, watching them learn in the depths while you sat in the shallow waters laughing at their failed attempts until your stomach starts to hurt from laughing while clutching your bump or learning new things with them, even successfully befriending an Ilu and riding it safely that you could have options to move around Awa'atlu.
But on days like these, when your exhaustion hits a little too hard, he couldn't help but lay down behind your back and just wrap his arms around you and pull you into his warm hug.
You always knew it was him, by the way he'd kiss your neck gently, one large hand on your belly as he strokes it softly, his head nuzzled in the Crook of your neck “You know you don't have to pretend you're asleep when I'm right beside you, Paskalin” he whispered, hot breath lingering on the curve of it.
You chuckled at the tickling sensation, giving in after he catches you in your pretend sleep, once again for the upteenth time, turning around to face him while he strokes your cheek with his hand as the other caresses your belly, peppering your face with kisses as you giggled “Did you eat anything, Honey?” He asked in a whisper, picking up after his father to call you sweet human nicknames that he loved. Like father, like son.
He was disappointed when you shook your head “how many times have I told you to eat something every two hours? It's not good for the baby, yawne!” He whisper-yelled at you but the answer he got from you was just a chuckle “I wasn't hungry, Ma teyam, and i wasn't feeling well either, Now let it-” he just shook his head in disappointment “tsk tsk tsk, you should have told me or sa’nu, she would have-”
The sentence was left unspoken when the loud commotion and yelling was heard outside, the locals were screaming at something or someone and loud cries were heard, both you and Neteyam got up with Neytiri and made your way to the rage going on inside the supply tent.
Neteyam kept his arm around your waist as you entered the tent, shielding you from the hands that reached out to hit or hold you or him. He was surprised at the sudden uprise until he understood what was happening when he took in the gossip and looks he was getting and looked at his father who was trying to explain.
Ronal’s Tulkun, Roa, was found dead or rather murdered by the human, as well as her babe.
»»————- 𑁍 ————-««
When Jake apologized and made his preposition on how to save the other Tulkuns from further harm, Neteyam saw Lo'ak running away from the crowd towards the diving edge, calling for his Ilu, immediately knowing what he was upto, he went behind him with you in tow after him.
“No way you're rolling out of here, baby brother” Neteyam said sternly as he walked in on Lo'ak strapping the saddle on the Ilu, Lo'ak halted, rolling his eyes at his brother in annoyance.
“I have to warn payakan about the pingers!” He snapped back but lowered his voice when he saw you behind Neteyam.
“No! you've gotta keep your skxwang ass here, you understand me?!” Neteyam said with a hint of annoyance lacing his, he didn't want another one of his brother's stupid mistakes to be blamed on him, not right now, not when he himself was about to be a father.
“Neteyam…Calm down” you whispered lightly, holding his arm back, you didn't want him to blow off on Lo'ak again, it could be done quietly and patiently.
Lo'ak on the other hand wanted to try and reason with him to let him go “he's an outcast, there's nobody to warn him but me”
Neteyam huffed, placing a hand on Lo'ak’s head, holding his brother in place “bro… why do you always have to make things so hard?”
Lo'ak hissed, flicking his brother's hand off his head in anger and defiance as his tone shifted to an aggressive one “No. You mean why can't I be the perfect son like you! The perfect little soldier! Who does everything right, has the perfect life and a perfect little mate and family! Well I'm not you! Okay?!” Neteyam sized him up and Lo'ak took a step back looking up at his brother and lowered his voice again “I'm not you..He's my brother! I'm going”
You were taken aback at that, you grabbed his arm making him face you as anger simmered in your eyes at what he just said “LO'AK!! What are you talking about?! He's your brother! Stop this right now! Is this how you talk to your brother?!”
Lo'ak skipped a look between you and Neteyam nervously as he took another step back but Neteyam stopped him by grabbing his arm tightly and forcing him to look “He's not your brother, skxwang! I am! And don't you dare talk like that again”
But Lo'ak was having none of it as he twisted his arm out of his grasp just when Tsireya, Ao'nung and Rotxo arrived giving Lo'ak a good distraction to dive into the water for his Ilu, Neteyam growled loudly before patting on Ao'nung’s chest “we have go behind him, he's going to payakan” he said urgently.
But something in your heart panged when he said that, a weird unease spreading to your chest again and you called out to him “teyam…please, don't go” you didn't know if it was stupid or not but you wanted to believe it “please, it doesn't feel right”
He looked back at you after he called his Ilu and came up to you quickly, cupping your cheek in his palm, stroking his thumb over your cheek, his other hand caressing your swollen belly, as he looked into your eyes intently, connecting your foreheads together and kissing your nose “Shh… I'll be right back, I promise, don't worry, I just have to put this Skxwang back in his place again” he whispered lovingly with a smirk, kissing your forehead one last time and giving your hand a tight squeeze before diving into the water with the others and following Lo'ak.
»»————- 𑁍 ————-««
Your heart was pacing a mile per second, the feeling of dread getting worse when it was notified by Lo'ak that Payakan was marked by the humans and Neteyam was their with them, Almost half of the clan, including Ronal and Tonowari were gone to save them, but all you could think of was Neteyam.
Hours passed and the sun began to set, spreading an eerie red and orange hue throughout the sky, no news of anyone or anything, only the sight of the injured or fallen warriors broughton back to Awa'atlu filled your mind with nightmares you only prayed stayed in your dreams.
You placed a hand on your stomach, the feeling of your baby moving against your palm was enough to give you some courage to call your Ilu and riding over to the scene yourself following behind another group of Warriors who were sent back to help others.
»»————- 𑁍 ————-««
The sight was a horror to take in as you sat on your ilu looking at the havoc the place was in, the ship sinking, fire ablaze on the water from the oil spill, the sky dusted in a amber color and dark smoke, as if matching the hell beneath on the water but your heart dropped when you saw the rock Island… with others gathered together around something.
Urging your ilu over to it, you climbed off of the creature before you saw a body lying on the rock and dread filled the pit of your stomach, the feet looked eerily familiar but you refused to think about it, it couldn't be… a cold shiver running down your spine, goosebumps spreading over your body as your breath hitched, before you could confirm your suspicions spider pulled you back, shaking his head, but that's all it took for your worst fear to come true, gears in your head turning as a scream erupted from your throat which ultimately caught everyone's attention in horror when they saw you, when you realized what you were looking at.
“NETEYAM!!!!! NO NO, GREAT MOTHER, PLEASE” you ran towards him but Neytiri stopped you, catching your body in her arms as your cries rang out for everyone to hear, thrashing in her arms as Jake came up to you “Shh look at me, look at me…” he whispered holding you back and not letting you see his body yet, placing his hands on your cheeks and forcing you to look at him as tears already ran down your cheeks.
“NO NO NO, NETEYAM, LET ME GO PLEASE!! please….” You sobbed as they held you back, Neytiri couldn't hold back either as she hugged you, your loss was far greater than any others, your knees gave out from the shock as they caught you once again before they let you go, knowing there was no denying it “It's going to okay, it's going be okay” Neytiri whispered desperately to calm you but nothing could soothe you in this moment.
Your heart almost stopped beating in your chest as you saw his lifeless body, crawling over to his side, with trembling hands as you touched his chest that was now covered in his blood, cold lifeless eyes staring up at the sky, as sobs wrecked your body, crying over your mate, who promised you he'd come back, who promised to spend the eternity together, now gone, forever.
Kneeling beside him as your wails of despair shook the heart of great mother herself, shaking your head in disbelief, as you held his limp hand in yours, only if he listened to you, only if he stayed back!
Your head laid on his chest, like the thousands of times before where he caressed your hair, as he hummed a sweet melody for you so you could sleep peacefully in his arms, listening to his heartbeat as you fell asleep, was cold, quiet and unmoving, as if the once alive, beating heart, never existed, you sobbed on his chest, blood coating the side of your face but you didn't care, holding his hand as if he would wake up and smile saying this was all just a dream and he was there with you, like he said.
Lo'ak placed a hand on your shoulder to comfort you but it only fueled your anger towards himas you snarled at him viciously and everyone was taken aback “DO NOT TOUCH ME, STAY AWAY! ONLY IF YOU EVER DID AS YOU WERE TOLD TO THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED, LO'AK!”
Your anger was justified and no one dared to stop you or invented in between, Your screams hit him like bullets as he didn't say a word, stepping back as you turned back to look at Neteyam's face, still unable to register the fact that he's gone and would never come back to you or your child ever again and your weren't ready to face it just yet.
“Teyam, please… you promised, right? you promised you'd come back to us, please, you can't do this to me, teyam… I can't do this without you, you promised to be there with me, to hold our baby, to hold my hand, you can't do this to me please, we- we…” you couldn't even form words anymore as more tears streamed down your cheeks, breaking down to the point of no return as your cries rang through everyone's ears.
They all couldn't handle to see your desperate attempts and cries to get him back, in hopes to get you back, begging any greater force would listen to give him back, their hearts breaking even more as they saw you placing his hand on your stomach one last time as you broke down completely, your head placed on his chest, watching the horrific sight of a mate mourning over her other half as their symbol of love grew inside her.
You closed your eyes and held him close one last time, holding his hand one last time, laying your head on his chest one last time, his hand on your stomach to feel his child for one last time as he still watched the darkening sky unmoving “you promised…”

"No, no Neteyam not like that," Tuk says and she snatches the bracelet from her brother's hands. "You have to secure the bead first."
"Okay okay." He chuckled and took the bracelet back.
"Why did you all of a sudden want to make stuff with me?" Tuk asks and she watches her brother blush. She gasps and starts giggling. "Is it for a girllll?" Neteyam did answer and looked away from her. "IT ISSS!" Tuk started jumping up and down and ran around the mauri.
"Tuk calm down," Neteyam says and he sets the bracelet down and tries to stop the small girl. Jake walked in and Tuk almost ran into him.
"DADDY DADDY! NETEYAM HAS A GIRLFRIEND!" She yells excitedly and grabs her father's hand.
"Does he now?" Jake says no amusement in his voice, it was sterner. Neteyam looked at his father and his ears dropped. "Babygirl can you go find your mom, I have to talk to your brother." Neteyam stood to his feet and hung his head low. Tuk frowns and looked between her family members before dropping Jakes's hand and walking away. Once she was out of earshot Jake stomped in front of his son.
"Your mother told me to speak with you, at first I didn't think it was necessary but I thought about it and it is. What were you thinking about flirting with Y/n? She is promised to someone else, she is to be Tshaik." Neteyam backed away and shook his head.
"She doesn't want to be with him."
"That doesn't matter, when or if the union ever gets called off, you gotta back off."
"Nothing going to happen," Neteyam says and turns away but grabs his shoulder.
"What if Tonowari and Ronal find out? We are here under Uturu, who knows what they would do to our family."
"I just kissed her hand to thank her!" Neteyam held his hands up.
"Even a blind Na'vi could see through the two of you. This is your warning. Back. Off." Jake pushed his son's chest with his finger with every word before walking out.
Neteyam bit his cheek and rubbed his face.
"Fuck." He hated how right his father was. He couldn't risk his family being kicked out just because he fell for the Cheifs daughter who's marrying another man.
He grabbed the bracelet from the floor and shoved it into a wooden case of his stuff.
-
"Sister, why are you smiling so much?"Aonung asks and he sits beside you. Your smile drops and you look at your brother's face. The black eye forming was taunting, making you roll your eyes. "Still mad about this morning."
"You did not defend me."
"I tried."
"Not enough, we are siblings. We are supposed to defend each other." You and Aonung had always been close as children, being close in age.
"I know I know, I do not like Reykxu any more than you do, none of us do."
"Father should not have chosen him." Ao'nung nodded in agreement before pursing his lips.
"Who are they?"
"Who?"
"I know that smile you had, someone's made you very happy." You sighed before scooting close to your brother and laying your head on his shoulder.
"I trust that you can keep a secret?"
"Of course." You sigh before smiling.
"It is Neteyam."
"Ahh forest boy." You playfully shove him away and he held his hands up in defense. "As much as I do not like him I will tolerate him, because unlike Reykxu. I see that Neteyam makes you happy."
"I'm glad you support me with something for once." You tease.
"Does he return your feelings?"
"I hope so, he tried to kiss me."
"He did?" He seemed a little shocked. "Did you kiss back?" You shook your head and wrapped your arms around your knees.
"I couldn't, it would be bad on my part."
"I understand." He rubbed your back. "If the great mother plans it, I may just get a better brother-in-law." You sometimes forget Aonung is not a complete fan of Reykxu.
"We'll see, now will you help me with dinner?"
"Do I have to?" He groans.
-
The next morning you practically skipped to the Sully's pod. You greeted them, not noticing the slight glare Neytiri gave you. Tuk giggled as she went up and hugged your torso.
"Hello Tuk, how are you today?" You passed your hand through her small braids.
"Good!"
"Tuk finish your food," Jake says and Tuk frowns before going back to eat.
"Where is Neteyam? We are practicing hunting today."
"He is down by the beach," Kiri says and you thank her. You walk down the beach, butterflies making you tense your stomach. You spot Neteyam, he wasn't facing you, but his dark blue skin gave him away. He looked like he was speaking to someone. You did a slight skip and in the process, a small teal hand wrapped itself around his bicep. You stopped and your brow bone pinched together. You peered around and your shoulders dropped.
Reytiti smiled and giggled obnoxiously and swiped her hand up and down Neteyams arm.
"Your training has shown off Mighty Warrior." She says and drags her wording out.
"You think?" Neteyam chuckles and lifts his arms to flex the large muscle.
Your fists clenched and face scrunched in anger, confusion, and jealousy at what you were seeing. You cleared your throat harshly pulling their attention away from each other.
Neteyam dropped his arms and he took a step back from Reytiti.
"Finish your conversation, we train immediately." You say sternly before walking away, putting yourself at a good distance from them. Neteyams jaw clenched and his ears twitch before flattening.
He knew what he was doing was wrong. You told him of your dislike for Reytiti in general. It was cruel he knew that, but he didn't know how to let you down since he confessed his feelings just last night. He didn't bother saying goodbye to the girl in front of him, just turned around and walked towards you.
"Ready." He says and he watches you kick some sand then brought your hand up to your face to wipe the tears he couldn't see but knew were there.
"Come." You say and start walking away again. Every time he tried to walk next to you, you would always speed up past him.
-
"We go deep in the forest so we have no mishap with the spears." You say as you grabbed a spear that rested against a tree. "You see worn down trees, hit them." You point at the trees with all the split wood. He nodded and took the spear from your hands and positioned himself to throw the spear. He brings his arm back and throws it. The spear didn't get far and landed a few feet before the trunk of the tree.
"Shit." He groaned and you grabbed another spear.
"You are using the knowledge you know of your bow, do not, they are very different. Get into position." You say and watch him, he enters the same position he was in and you shake your head. "Stop." You kicked his feet smaller than shoulder width apart, you then grabbed the unoccupied hand and raised it in the air, and straightens his hand. "Use your hand to guide the spear."
"Yes ma'am." He says and you huffed and stepped back. He throws it and it went slightly farther but still didn't hit.
"You use your back too much, just breathe. Now go get them." You say sternly and glare at him. Neteyam swallowed and started walking to retrieve the spears. He knew he was getting punished, but he couldn't help but get hard at the authority.
-
He lost count of how many times you made him throw the spears. It was now eclipse and he's only managed to hit around the tree, not the center.
"Y/n can we please have a break, or call it a night? My muscles hurt and so do my legs." He says, he wasn't one to complain about training but he couldn't go much longer.
"Fine. One more and we're done." Neteyam nodded and rolled his shoulders back, wincing at the pain. He lost the momentum he had slightly so you stepped in. You stepped close to him, one leg in between his, and helped lift his arms. Your cheek brushed against his clavicle and the heat of his skin burned but it felt nice. He looked down at you and licked his lips.
"You're so beautiful." He whispers and you back up.
"Did you tell Reytiti that? Shoot." He frowned, almost a pout at your words.
"No woman's beauty compares to yours." He drops the spear and faces you completely. He takes a step forward and grabs you by the arms.
"I bet you have said that to all the women from the forest and Reytiti." He backed you up into a tree and practically pinned you to it.
"I have not said that to any woman." He placed .his hands on your hips and squeezed
"Then what was that this morning hmm?"
"Mamas, my parents-." A loud horn cut him off and you stepped away from him. "What does that mean?"
"Something is wrong, come we must go." You say and grab his hand to pull him with you.
-
Just as you reached the outskirts of the village, Aounung passed you and dropped Neteyams hand.
"Brother, what is happening?" Aonung seemed stressed as he grabbed at his scalp.
"I did something really bad." You grabbed his shoulders.
"Tell me." You say, urgency clear in your voice. Aoung glanced at Neteyam and took in a deep breath.
"It's about Lo'ak, fuck it's all my fault." Neteyam launched at your brother and pinned him to a tree.
"What about my brother?"
-
"You are stupid brother but I did not think you'd ever do this. If Lo'ak is dead it is murder." You say freaking out at your brother whose braid was in a tight hold by Neteyam.
"I know I know."
"Well, you did not if you did it."
You made it back to the village. Na'vi were running everywhere, calling out for each other and saying the situation.
"We must find our fathers."
It didn't take long for you to find them. They pointed down at a wooden table talking with a few others.
"Dad," Neteyam says in English and they all turned around. All of their brow bones pinched together as they saw Neteyam have a tight hold on Ao'nung, and you with your arms crossed behind him.
"Y/n?" Tonowari looks to you for answers.
"It is about Lo'ak."
"What about him?" Jake asks and Neteyam shoved Ao'nung forward roughly.
"Tell them what you told us." Ao'nung grabbed Neteyams wrist and shoved it away. He started telling his story and in the process, your father scolded him. And just as he finished, your people sounded the horn and said the Sully boy has returned.
Jake and Neteyam didn't waste any time before taking off to find him. Tonowari stepped forward and grabbed Ao'nungs shoulder tightly.
"I did not raise you to do this, just because your ego is bruised does not mean you can attempt murder."
"Father I did not attempt-."
"Quiet. Lo'ak does not know the true dangers of beyond the reef, I was already skeptical of letting you and your friends go out and hunt." Ao'nung head hung in shame as your father walked away.
"Are you going to yell at me too?" He asks and you shake your head.
"You already got enough." You say and walk away. You approached the growing crowd and eased through it. Neteyam was crouching down on the stone ledge. You walked up behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder. He tensed up at the cold touch and looked up.
"Hey." He says and you gave him a small smile and his tail gently wrapped around your calf making you chuckle.
"Is Lo'ak alright?"
"From what I can see, yes."
"Good."
Neytiri rushed past you and hopped down to check on her son. Your father grabbed Ao'nung by his neck and pushed him down to a knee.
"My son knew better than to take and leave your son out beyond the reef," Tonowari says and Tsireya then rushes through the crowd.
"Lo'ak!" She pushed herself into his body and hugged him tightly. You sucked in a breath as you watched them hug so freely, expressing the feelings they have. It made you wonder what your relationship with Neteyam is. If there even is a relationship there, because you were still a little pissed off at him and you still had... Reyxu to deal with.
Neteyam stood, tail unraveling from your leg. He stood to his full height as the people started dispersing. He grabbed your wrist and gave it a gentle squeeze before letting it go and hopping down to his family.
Unbeknownst to either of you, your mother watched the whole interaction from afar. A scowl planted on her face.
You watched Jake scold Lo’ak, your sister standing close. You hop down and go to wrap an arm around her.
“Lo’ak is okay.” You say, trying to reassure her. She nodded and took in a shaky breath. You felt a harsh tap on your shoulder and you turned around with brow bones pinched.
“Where have you been?” Reyxu asks with his arms crossed. You roll your eyes and shrugged.
“It doesn’t matter where I was?”
“Yes, it does.” He takes a step forward but you hold your ground. “Your parents question me where you are  and I can’t give them a solid answer.” You roll your eyes.
“I have to teach the Sullys.” He scoffed and shook his head.
“Teach the Sullys? No you mean teach Neteyam.”
“So what if I am?” He shakes his head and grabs your arm.
“I see the way he looks at you, the way you look at each other. Imagine the disgrace you’d bring upon this clan when they find out.” Your ears flatten and you shake your head. But you knew he was right.
“There is nothing to find out.” Suddenly Reyxu grabbed your arms and held them tightly. Tsireya gasped and grabbed your shoulder.
“Stop hanging out with that freak, and your parents won’t find out.” You shove him away and hissed.
“Don’t act as if you care, now leave me alone.” He squinted his eyes and looked behind you.
Neteyam stood there. Nostrils flared. The tail sticking straight up. Hands in tight fists. And a wild look in his eyes. Jake’s hand rested on his son’s shoulder, shaking him, trying to get his attention.
“Neteyam, stop this. She isn’t yours.” He seethes in English but Neteyam wouldn’t back down.
You turned to see what Reykxu was looking at and your heart fluttered.
“Go home.” You tell Reyxu and turn away from him. Tsireya’s gentle hands inspected your arm for any bruises. “I'm okay sister.” You brushed her off and gave her a reassuring smile. She didn’t buy it but stepped back. You turned your attention to Neteyam who was burning holes into your head. You walk over to him with a pout and gently grab his fist. “You cannot act this way.” He looked down at you.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes I am, I can handle him.”
“I know I just-.” He paused and sighed, in the process releasing part of his stress. “I don’t trust him.”
“You act as if we are together.” You placed a hand on his arm and peer behind him to see Jake and Neytiri glaring. It honestly scared you.
“You’re mine, baby girl, just nobody knows yet.” He says, very lowly, even you almost didn’t catch what he said.
“I like these names you’ve called me, even though I don't know what they mean.” You giggled and Neteyam let out a light chuckle.
“I’ll tell you what they mean. I’ll also tell you why I did what I did this morning.” You frowned at that but nodded.
“No training tomorrow, you’ve advanced greatly. You will be ready for your rites in no time.”
“Good.” He looked you up and down and you blushed.
“I’ll see you later Neteyam.”
“Bye.” Neteyam watched you leave, making sure nobody bothered you. He also watched your hips and tail sway side to side but that's beside the point.
Jale stepped forward and looked at him.
“Are you going to listen now?” He asks and Neytiri joins him on the other side.
“You risk our family’s safety”
“Nothing will happen. And I’m not going to stop, and the two of you know that.” He took a step back from them and walked away. Jake and Neytiri looked at each other, clear worry on their faces.

First To Kiss Her, Wins
Lo'ak x Reader x Tsireya
Summary: You and Lo'ak mated and went to the Metkayina people with his family. There you saw the most beautiful girl, and both of you agreed and knew you needed to have her, together.
I mostly just wanted the reader to scream at Ao'nung that she's fucking his sister.
Then, of course, I needed some good content for Lo'ak and Tsireya fucking the reader.
Also, they're aged up.
Warnings: smut, bisexual reader, semi-public sex
You and Lo'ak have been mated for two years now, you and him have been best friends since birth. Your parents were friends with his parents and being born around the same time made you the perfect match. Your parents and his pretty much forced the mating upon you two, not that either of you minded, you expect as much. You and Lo'ak got along well, spending the rest of your lives together wasn’t a bad thing.
Once you both got older, your attraction changed from being best friends to best friends and something else. That something else grew and you two were fucking before your parents even really started grooming you into mating with each other. You loved each other a lot and your sex life was mind-boggling but there was something else.
Lo’ak was a horny man, everyone knew that, he liked to look and it didn’t really bother you. It didn’t bother you mostly because you were staring along with him, he would specifically point out females to you. So, really, you both liked to look and you both got off on the idea of having another female join you two. However, no one here seemed to fit, no one here seemed like they’d be into it or like both of you enough.
So, you just held off and pushed that dream down, deep deep down.
Then your happy mundane life changed and you were running off with your mate’s family. You knew you’d miss your family but your mate mattered more to you, you couldn’t stand to be away from him. You all flew on your ikrans to the shores of the Metkaiyna people, there you would seek refuge.
You remember what it was like being held at gunpoint by those military men in their false bodies. You remember looking at Lo’ak and studying his face like it was the last time you’d ever see him. You started at his eyes, his braids, his hands, his mouth, his nose, his ears, his jawline, every part of his head you were memorizing so when you were with Eywa you’d see him. But you ended up all getting away unscathed, except for Spider, he was gone, he was taken by them. You were just happy that you were safe and your mate was too.
You landed on the shores and you all got off your ikrans, you stood next to Lo’ak and Neteyam. You watched the people gather around you; you watched them come up from the ocean to stand around your family.
Out of the water came this gorgeous girl, water was dripping down her body as she walked towards you guys. Her hair was long and flowing also dripping water onto her teal skin, the braids on her head led you to her striking eyes. They were so big and kind and so blue, she had the cutest face, a face you’d love to see contort in pleasure. Your finger tapped Lo’ak’s thigh to get his attention, he looked down at you at first, he wondered if you were scared and needed comfort.
“Are you okay?” Lo’ak whispered to you.
“Two o’clock. Pretty girl,” you whispered back. You'd picked up the two o’clock part from their father when you’d watch the boys train. You didn’t understand it at first until you joined in on their training and Jake taught it to you.
Lo’ak’s eyes searched for the girl, he saw her right off to his right. “With the pretty eyes?”
“Yeah.”
“Damn, she is gorgeous.”
“Told you,” you smiled back.
Your whispering stopped as the chief of the tribe started to speak to your father-in-law.
You were granted asylum from the Metkaiyna people, you were allowed to stay. You got brought to your mauri, you’d be staying in one altogether, not that it bothered you. Best thing you learned, to which you smirked at Lo’ak once you were told, Tsireya, the pretty girl would be teaching you. Turns out she’s the daughter of the chief, she and her brother, the dick head, would be teaching you the ways of the water.
Sitting with the Metkayina kids was nice, it was nice to meet some new people with new thoughts. You went swimming the following morning, jumping into the cool water was nice. You jumped in with Tsireya but she and her siblings were so much faster than you and your family. Watching her swim was graceful, she swam so beautifully, it made you want her more.
After that day, you would talk with Lo’ak every day about how much you liked to watch her and how pretty she was.
“Aren’t I supposed to be your mate?”
“Yeah, but she’s just so pretty. I wanna put my tongue on her throat.”
Lo’ak laughed, “you are worse than me.”
“You made me like this, don’t hate me 'cause you ain’t me.”
“Didn’t think I’d like corrupting someone, but I like that I made you hornier than me.”
“What about corrupting Tsireya? Eywa, I would love to just have my hands on her.”
“Well, why don’t we start getting her warmed up? First to kiss her wins.”
“Are you proposing a bet, Lo’ak?”
“Maybe… So, you in?”
“Obviously. She’s mine first.”
“In your dreams,” Lo’ak pushed you onto your back.
He leaned over you and rested his hands on either side of your head, he kissed you with passion.
“Awe, is talking about Tsireya making you hard, yawne?”
“You fucking know it. Eywa, I wish she was here. I’d love to see her on your pretty face.”
You whimpered.
“Is me talking about Tsireya making you wet, tìyawn?”
“Shut up, you made your point.”
Lo’ak smirked as he kissed down your stomach.
You and him fucked on the secluded rocks by the reef, it was nice, you hadn’t had time to be intimate in a while. Not to mention, the idea of Tsireya made you both so much hornier that it was the best you had in some time.
The next day, the game was on, and you were dead set on getting to Tsireya first.
You were sat next to her as you were practicing breathing techniques, she was touching Lo’ak’s stomach. You could tell that he was nervous as she placed her hand gently on his abdomen, it made you both smile and made you angry that he was coming out on top.
You went swimming a little while after and as you did you swam really close to her, you wanted to be right next to her. You held her hand as you swam, you would swim up to her as she swam in place, your hands would rest on her hips as you smiled at her. You knew she was smiling but you could tell she felt a little off, you saw it on her face and in her smile.
You three sat on the shore, eclipse was coming, you and Lo’ak sat on either side of Tsireya. The eclipse was always so pretty, even prettier when it refracted on the water. Your head rested on Tsireya’s shoulder; you had your hand in hers as you played with her fingers. Lo’ak had his arm around her and played with your hair well also wrapping one of Tsireya’s curls around his finger as he stared at her beautiful features.
“Can I ask you guys something?”
“What is it Tsireya?” you asked.
“You guys are mated right?”
“Yes, why do you ask?” Lo’ak replied.
“Forgive me if this is forward, but I feel as though you guys are trying to court me. Your touches have been very – intimate.”
She looked so nervous; she looked embarrassed but not necessarily against the touches.
“I’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable. Sometimes we get a little carried away. If you don’t like it, we can stop,” you said lifting your head up and facing her.
“I’m not against it, I liked it actually. I just felt bad, you guys are mated. I shouldn’t be –“
You cut her off by pressing a small quick kiss to her lips, she smiled as you pulled away.
“We have been trying to get you to join us, from the moment we met you we wanted you. Just because we are mated already doesn’t mean we can’t add you in,” Lo’ak said brushing some hair off her shoulder and kissing it.
“Are you guys serious? You wouldn’t get upset with me if I wanted in?”
“Never, we need you so badly. You’re all we ever think about,” you whined against her ear.'
Her hand moved to your thigh and she gripped at it lightly, she liked how things were going, she was into both of you.
This time you kissed her longer and a little harder, your hands rested on her cheeks and slowly moved into her hair. Lo’ak was kissing at her neck and chest, you slowly opened your mouth and swiped your tongue on her lips. She opened up her lips from the surprise contact of your tongue and you slipped it in, you curled it against the roof of her mouth. You felt her sharp fangs as you ran your tongue over hers, when you pulled back, she was panting.
“I love that so much.”
“Good, because I do it a lot apparently. That’s what Lo’ak says,” you smiled at her.
“Wait till she starts biting your lip and sucking on it, I always love that,” Lo’ak smirked.
Tsireya shuttered as Lo’ak kissed her neck, “can we stop here today? This is the furthest I’ve ever gone with someone and I’m a little overwhelmed. I want more just not right now.”
“Of course, syulang. You take your time. We won’t rush you,” Lo’ak said kissing her cheek.
“Thank you.”
“You know where to find us when you’re ready. Or you can just let it happen on random nights we are together, like tonight,” you said as you kissed her head and stood up.
Lo’ak offered her his hand and helped her up, the three of you walked back to where the homes were. It was late, tomorrow was a new day, all you knew was that you felt ecstatic, you had your girl.
The next day consisted of some lessons then some downtime as Tsireya and Ao’nung had some chores to do. You were with Lo’ak and his brother, you were just hanging out and talking when you saw Ao’nung and his friends. Kiri was in the water; he was talking to her. When you and Lo’ak heard the word freak you and him stormed over there and Neteyam had no choice but to follow.
Ao’nung was throwing insult after insult at you guys, saying you were all weak and slow and freaks.
“Everyone here thinks you guys are freaks. No one wants you here, you’re so weird.”
“Oh yeah,” you started, you were ready to defend your and your family’s honour. Lo’ak and Neteyam tried to reel you in, they knew you liked to get into people's faces and be a little snotty from time to time. Really it was justified here, at least that’s how you felt. “That’s not what your sister said last night when I had my tongue down her throat.”
That shocked everyone, everyone was taken aback by what you just said, even Lo’ak and he witnessed it.
“As if. My sister wouldn’t want to be with the likes of you guys.”
“Then why was she so turned on by my hands on her?”
He looked lost, like he was grasping at straws, “aren’t you two mated anyways? Why would you be going after someone else?”
“He kissed her too.”
Now that really had people taken aback, it only just occurred to you that Tsireya may not have wanted you to start shouting about what transpired last night.
“You guys really are freaks,” Ao’nung said as he smirked and laughed with his friends.
Neteyam took Kiri and you went to walk off before Lo’ak punched the kid in the face, you had to desperately hold back a shout of ‘oh yeah.’ You didn’t want to encourage him to beat this boy up, but Ao’nung was asking for it. If he didn’t want to get punched then he shouldn’t have been calling people freaks, but you knew this was going to go back when the adults found out, namely his father.
You and Neteyam joined in on the fight, mainly just to get Lo’ak away, you and Neteyam hit some of his friends before you all stopped.
Jake was yelling at his boys, you stood off to the side, you knew Jake would be yelling at you too. You knew he expected better of you, he only ever knew you as the perfect golden child. Having never been in trouble in the forest and always doing as asked, which was true but as you and Lo’ak got older and he got more rebellious, you just sort of followed.
The next day when you were with Tsireya, she was teaching you more breathing and their finger talk. Lo’ak was out with Ao’nung, his father told him to apologize, you told him to be careful and to not trust the kid. You and Tsireya were heavily flirting and to be honest, you wanted to get her somewhere secluded to kiss her again. You could tell she wanted that too, but she held off, she thought Lo’ak should be here as it was only the second time doing this.
You knew Lo’ak would be cool with it, as long as it wasn’t sex, he didn’t care. You and her spent the entire day together, it felt like one of your dates with Lo’ak. You and her went swimming all over the reef and on top of that she showed you a few of her favourite spots, which you couldn’t wait to whisk her into some of the gorgeous caves she showed you with Lo’ak.
Spending all day with her helped keep your mind off the fact that Lo’ak hasn’t been around in hours, he was supposed to meet up with you and Tsireya. It was dark out now and you her, were slightly concerned but you figured his dad held him up with something. After some time you and she went looking for him, you went to so many different places. You knew if he was upset, he’d still come and find you, you were his rock so to speak.
Then you heard the horn sound, you looked at Tsireya for the meaning, she said it was a warning call. You watched numerous people gather on the shore and ready their mounts to head out. You ran over to where you saw Neteyam and Ao’nung with Jake and Neytiri, you felt your heart drop.
What happened? Did this have anything to do with Lo’ak?
You got there before Tsireya; she was lagging behind you slightly.
“Jake? What’s happening?”
Jake sighed like he didn’t want to answer, “Lo’ak is missing. Ao’nung brought him out passed the reef.”
Your eyebrows furrowed and your heart sunk further, you felt nauseous, what if he was dead? After your brain processed the information, your eyes went from wide open pools to tiny slits as you glared daggers at Ao’nung who was being held by Neteyam.
“You mother fucker,” you went to lunge at Ao’nung.
Neteyam moved back a little with Ao’nung and Tsireya grabbed your arms to pull you back into her.
“Stop, this isn’t the time,” Tsireya said as she tried desperately to hold you back.
She was weak compared to you, you were seeing red currently, and you were ready to break her arms to scissor-kick Ao’nung.
Then Lo’ak was coming to the shore, you felt your body relax, and your shoulders hurt from how tight you held them up. You ran up to him as he was on the solid ground of the walkways, you hugged him tightly, your body missing him more than ever.
“Ao’nung didn’t do it, it was my choice.”
You went to interrupt, Lo’ak would never but Tsireya grabbed your hand and that made you shut your mouth. Lo’ak walked off and you went after him while still holding Tsireya’s hand.
“Are you okay? Why would you say that? Ao’nung totally should’ve gotten in trouble.”
“It’s not worth it.”
“Lo’ak, what happened out there? I was so fucking worried.”
“Nothing.”
“Lo’ak, you’re being distant. We’ve been friends forever; don’t think you can hide shit from me. What happened?”
“I made a friend.”
“Who?”
“Payakan.”
“The outcast,” Tsireya mumbled.
“Who?” You asked her.
“The outcast tulcan.”
“That’s why you’re being distant. You made a friend with another outcast.”
Tsireya hit your arm, “ow, what? Me and him have always been alienated from our families that’s why we were best friends. We became friends because no one else wanted to be our friends. We are good people with thoughts and feelings but because Lo’ak is more human than other Na’vi and I’d rather fuck a girl, we were deemed to not be good enough.”
Tsireya hugged you for your confession, she knew that it must be been hard to deal with that growing up. She was very empathetic; she didn’t like that you both had to deal with that.
“How did you end up mating then?” Tsireya asked.
“Our parents were friends and they liked the idea of us together. Better than leaving us forever alone so our parents kept bringing up the idea of mating. We were best friends at that point so we figured why not. Plus, at that point, we were already fucking on the regular so we figured why not,” Lo’ak explained.
“But I thought you’re into girls?” Tsireya looked at you.
“I like girls and boys. I always liked the idea of being with a girl more but Lo’ak was the first guy I slept with and after experiencing that I don’t think I’d want a different guy. We always talked about bringing another girl in but there was no one we liked enough, until you.”
Tsireya looked down as she blushed, “can we just leave for a bit? I wanna feel both of you.”
“Of course, yawne,” Lo’ak said as he grabbed her hand as well and they walked over to the nearby cave she loved.
Once you three got into the cave, Tsireya kissed Lo’ak first. Your hands went up her back and you moved some of her hair away to kiss at her neck and back. She had such a gorgeous teal body; it was so smooth and sleek despite the salt water she was always in.
As you pulled away from her body, Lo’ak flipped their bodies around so he had her pressed up against the cave wall, you moved back in behind him. Your hands came from behind him to wrap around his torso, then your hands slid down his muscular chest. Your hands stopped at the top of his loin cloth, your thumbs catching the band around his waist. You started to palm him through his loin cloth, you could hear him moaning into the kiss he was sharing with Tsireya.
“I’m going to suck you off, yawne,” you whispered into Lo’ak’s ear, just enough for Tsireya to also hear.
You pulled him off Tsireya, “just wait till you see this,” you smiled up at her as you untied Lo’ak’s loin cloth.
His back was against the rocks and you pulled down his loin cloth, you grabbed onto his cock and started to stroke it in your hand. Once your mouth wrapped around the tip, Lo’ak’s hand threaded into your hair. You hollowed your cheeks as you sucked on his dick, you knew it was Lo’ak’s favourite to be praised like this. You could feel that he was close, he was pulsing on your tongue, then you heard Tsireya and your eyes flicked to your left to see her watching so intently.
“You wanna try?” You asked her as you pulled off for a moment.
She nodded frantically.
You pulled off again, your hand held the base of his cock and brought Tsireya close to you. “Okay, so start by just kissing the tip, he loves that.”
And that she did, her soft and small lips touched his tip, Lo’ak’s hand then went to grip her hair.
“Good, now stick your tongue out and lick it a little then maybe run your tongue up from where my fingers are to the tip.”
She was good at following directions, that you could tell, she was a fast learner too, Lo’ak had his eyes slammed shut.
“Now, try taking it into your mouth a little. Don’t go further than you're comfortable. Take in as much as you can or want.”
She took him into her mouth, she got a little more than halfway.
“Now close your lips around him and pull back then push back. Don’t let the tip leave your mouth. Also, be careful with your teeth.”
She went to town, that girl was a fast learner, she was doing such a good job and you praised her as such. You went to suck on Lo’ak’s balls a little and he was moaning and whimpering from the works of you two.
“He’s close. He will come very shortly. You don’t have to let him cum in your mouth if that’s too much. If you do want that then you don’t have to swallow.”
She didn’t stop and she continued at a faster pace, she wanted it all, if you could do it then she could. Lo’ak came thrusting his hips forward, shoving his cock further down her throat. It helped her swallow everything he was giving her, she pulled back with a smile.
“Such a good job, syulang. For your first-time sucking dick, you had him whimpering and that is what we want. In fact, you did so well, I think you deserve a reward,” you said with a smile as your face got closer to hers.
“A reward?” She was bashful again.
“Yes, of course.”
You gently laid her back, you took her loin cloth off, “let me know if it gets to be too much.”
She nodded.
Your mouth attached to her clit and instantly it had her crying out and arching her back, this was unlike she has ever felt before. As you went to town eating out her pussy, Lo’ak decided to move her chest covering and attach his mouth to her nipple. His hand went to play with the other one as she cried out of her body receiving so much stimulation that her body couldn’t stop squirming.
“Let her ride your face,” Lo’ak said.
You pulled away briefly, “why you wanna fuck me?”
“Yes.”
Lo’ak was so blunt, that’s how you knew he was desperate. You pulled off her briefly again, enough to lay back and take with you. You had her sitting on your chest as you looked up at her.
“I’m going to do what I was doing before, but now you’ll be sitting up. Don’t be afraid to grind down onto me,” you smirked at her.
You hoisted her up and rested her on your face and your tongue went back to work. Lo’ak wasted no time in getting your loin cloth off, his fingers went to your clit and started to finger you a little before slowly pushing inside. You heard him hiss as he bottomed out, your hands on Tsireya’s hips squeezed hearing Lo’ak trying to get used to how tight you are. Your hands kneaded the flesh of her hips and occasionally her butt, Lo’ak would kiss at her back, shoulders, neck, whatever he could get his lips on.
Lo’ak started to thrust faster into you, your grip on her hips would just get tighter as you got closer. You could feel her rocking her hips back and forth, she was going to cum and she knew it too or at least her body did. You sucked harder on her clit, you wanted to make her cum, you wanted it now, you wanted to taste it. She leaned forward and gripped the solid ground; her whimpers were breathier and whinier. She came, you licked through her folds trying to gather as much of it as possible.
Lo’ak went even faster, he wanted was determined to get you to cum along with himself. He just kept going faster and faster, even more when Tsireya got off you and watched Lo’ak destroy you. He now had full access to push your legs up and reach a new angle, your hands reached out. One gripped his bicep and the other went to her thigh, your head was thrown back as your body rocked into his.
You came first and Lo’ak came right after, his tired and sweaty forehead rested on yours.
“How was that,” you turned to look at Tsireya.
“Amazing. I want to do it again. Just not now I’m tired.”
You chuckled, “welcome to the club,” you pulled her into yours and Lo’ak’s bodies and you all laid there to rest for a while before inevitably you’d have to head back.

- Grace by Jeff Buckley
- It describes how he doesn't fear death or any other hardships because he knows that you love him and he loves you and that love fuels him to keep going. He doesn't feel bad about his own mortality, since he has your love.

So easy to know and forget with this kiss
I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow."
Charlotte Katakuri
Tumblr media
- Never Was A Love Like Mine by Gale Garnett and Maury Laws
- He's never loved anyone as much as he loved you. You accepted him, loved him despite his scars, something his own family failed to do. He knows its wrong, but he puts you on such a higher pedestal than he does his family, because you love him, despite his 'flaws'. You don't care about his scarred mouth, you don't care that he likes to lay down from time to time, you don't care that he likes to gorge himself on donuts. He can put down the wall of perfection he built for himself and be his true self around you. Which is why he loves you more than anything and clings to you, hoping that you'll always stay true to him.
- "Tell me a thousand times each day
You've never been loved this way
Swear to me you'll never roam dear
Promise me you'll stay at home dear."
Eustass Kid
Tumblr media
- Burn by The Cure
- Kid's heart burns for you. He feels antsy and irritated when you're not near him, making the fire in his heart burn stronger. He yearns for you, screams for you, craves for you, burns for you, because his love for you is that strong. When he's with you, his heart is engulfed in flame, with a fire that burns only for you, a flame that will never be put out.

Every night I scream your name
Every night I burn
Every night the dreams the same."
Roronoa Zoro
Tumblr media
- No One Knows by Queens of The Stone Age
- When Zoro realized that he was in love with you, it hit him like a truck. Sure, you two were already dating by then, but he was just going off of vibes, he didn't know if what he felt was really love. Until he found himself feeling other things. He felt jealousy whenever Sanji swooned over you, he felt pride whenever you kissed him after winning a fight, he felt peace whenever he woke up to your face. When he realized his emotions started switching up whenever you were around, It freaked him the hell out at first, because no one should have this much power over him and he didn't know what you were doing to him. Until it hit him right on his stupid mossy head. He was in love with you.
- "Oh what you do to me
No one knows
And I realize you're mine
Indeed a fool am I
And I realize you're mine
Indeed a fool am I."

You've truly changed each other for the better and you wouldn't know how to continue on without each other. Even if you could, would you really want to ?
- "Don't give up my love
It's you I'm thinking of
So please don't turn away and leave me all alone
You've changed my life it's true
You've helped to see me through

Opinion: Town Sums up the Delusions of the Right Wing
The embrace of the country star’s anti-city ‘modern lynching song’ by Republicans encapsulates their nostalgia and paranoia

Jason Aldean is a country music star and a big fan of law and order. He loves the law so much, in fact, that he’s willing to take it into his own hands.
If you come to his (imaginary) small town and disrespect a cop or engage in any sort of protest, you will regret it.
Such is the theme of Aldean’s new song, Try That in a Small Town, which is all about how the singer and his pals will aggressively deal with unseemly behaviour on their turf. A sample extract: “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face … Well, try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road. / Around here, we take care of our own …”
A little later in the song Aldean elaborates further on what might happen if lines are crossed. “Got a gun that my grandad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up. / Well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck.” He is, it would appear, referencing a conspiracy theory that the government is going to confiscate Americans’ guns to impose martial law.
Try That in a Small Town was released in May but when the music video came out last Friday it generated immediate controversy. The video leaves little doubt as to what Aldean is trying to communicate: it intersperses footage of him singing in front of Maury county courthouse in Tennessee – the site of the lynching of a Black man, Henry Choate, in 1927 – with footage from protests, looting and civil unrest. Small towns are wholesome, the message is. Full of “good ol’ boys” who were “raised up right”. Cities, meanwhile, are hotbeds of violence … and diversity.
That last bit isn’t spelled out – it’s not like Aldean yells “I’m a massive racist!” in the middle of the track – but the dog whistles are difficult to ignore. The song has been called “a modern lynching song” by detractors and the video was pulled from Country Music Television (CMT) on Monday. (While CMT has confirmed the video was taken off rotation, it hasn’t put out a statement as to why.) Fellow country star Sheryl Crow has also voiced her disapproval. “There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence,” Crow tweeted on Tuesday. She further noted that Aldean should know better, “having survived a mass shooting”. Crow was referencing the shooting at Las Vegas’s Route 91 Harvest festival in 2017: the deadliest mass shooting by a lone shooter in modern US history. Aldean was performing and got out unscathed. He was lucky. Sixty people were killed and 867 injured. Those people weren’t killed and injured by a Black Lives Matter protester. They were killed by Stephen Paddock, an angry white man from Iowa.
Try That in a Small Town has generated a lot of criticism, but it also has fervent supporters. Including, of course, GOP lawmakers. “I am shocked by what I’m seeing in this country with people attempting to cancel this song and cancel Jason and his beliefs,” the South Dakota Republican governor, Kristi Noem, posted in a video on Twitter on Wednesday. The Tennessee house GOP leader, William Lamberth, similarly tweeted: “Loved this song since it was released and will continue to fight every day to spread small town values … Give it a listen. The woke mob will hate you for liking this song.” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the governor of Arkansas, also didn’t miss the chance to stoke a little culture war. “The Left is now more concerned about Jason Aldean’s song calling out looters and criminals than they are about stopping looters and criminals,” she tweeted.
Aldean, for his part, is furious at insinuations there is anything racist in his song about shooting outsiders who come to his little country town.
“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song,” Aldean tweeted on Wednesday, “and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage.”
If Aldean isn’t trying to make a point about the Black Lives Matter protests, what is Try That in a Small Town about then? Community, apparently. “When u grow up in a small town, it’s that unspoken rule of ‘we all have each other’s backs and we look out for each other,’” Aldean wrote on Instagram when he launched the video. “It feels like somewhere along the way, that sense of community and respect has gotten lost.”

Perhaps you’re wondering which quaint small town Aldean grew up in. The answer is: he didn’t. Aldean is from Macon, Georgia – a city with a population of about 153,000 people. Now he lives in Nashville, a city with a population of approximately 700,000. The small town he’s singing about is a product of his imagination.
But that’s conservatives for you. Last month Nikki Haley tweeted about how much better the US used to be back in the days before marginalized people had rights. “Do you remember when you were growing up, do you remember how simple life was, how easy it felt? It was about faith, family, and country,” she tweeted.
Was the past really that easy for the former South Carolina governor? By her own admission things have got a hell of a lot better for people who, like her, aren’t 100% white. “Years ago I was disqualified from a pageant because they didn’t know whether to put me in the white category or the black,” she wrote on Facebook in 2012. “I was neither. Tonight I watched my daughter get first place in her school pageant. God has an amazing way of bringing things full circle.” God also has an amazing away of depriving people like Haley of self-awareness.
Aldean’s song doesn’t just epitomize manufactured rightwing nostalgia, it also encapsulates rightwing paranoia. People on the right are obsessed with the idea that big cities are violent hotbeds of crime where you risk your life every time you nip out for a pint of milk. In reality, however, big cities tend to be safer than small towns. A 2013 study by the University of Pennsylvania, for example, found the risk of death from an injury was more than 20% higher in rural small towns than in larger cities. “Cars, guns and drugs are the unholy trinity causing the majority of injury deaths in the US” one of the researchers told NBC News at the time.
The pandemic, to be fair, saw a rise in violent crimes in cities. But even still, you’ve got a better chance of living a long, healthy life in a city. A 2021 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on mortality data from 1999 to 2019 found people living in rural areas die at higher rates than those living in urban areas. That’s because they have less access to healthcare and are more likely to live in poverty.
So what’s next for Aldean? Well, I’ve got some good news for all the Republican lawmakers screeching about how unfair it is that Aldean has been cancelled by the woke mob: he’s going to be fine. Indeed, he’s going to be more than fine. Country music (and America) has a way of opening its arms to people accused of racism and making them feel right at home. Just look at Morgan Wallen, for example. In February 2021 TMZ published a video of the musician drunkenly yelling the N-word during a conversation with a friend. He was shunned from polite society for a few months but made a rapid comeback. He won album of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2022. His song Last Night is currently in its 14th week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. If it sticks there a little longer he’ll beat the 19-week record currently held by Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
While people on the right may be railing about Aldean being “cancelled”, the sad truth is that this will probably help his career. He’ll go on Fox News and yell about wokeness. He’ll wallow in his imagined victimhood. His song will probably be played in rallies for the next Republican nominee for president. Aldean hasn’t been cancelled or silenced – his message has been amplified.
