Mini McCoy drawing I did in the note space of May 5th in my 2023 diary, which is when I watched “Star Trek TOS - S01E15: Shore Leave” for the second time.
I only drew him recently, despite having watched the episode eight months ago! At least that means I can post it around Easter though, because for me the episode always feels Easter-y with how sunny it is and of course the White Rabbit’s appearance.
Drawn with B pencil and Lyra colouring pencils.
Progress pics and rant below cut.
Please don’t use or post on other websites without credit or permission, thanks 🙏
This drawing was the bane of my existence for a while. It took me 10 days to complete from start to finish! Ok, so I wasn’t drawing on every one of those 10 days, but this still took me way longer than it should have for its size. I don’t know what was so hard about it exactly, I had to constantly alter the jawline and eyes, and don’t get me started on the mouth! I think the angle was a difficult one for any face, but for some reason Doctor McCoy was another level. I never draw guidelines for my diary doodles because they’re so small, I just free draw the outlines, but with this one I could’ve done with having some guidelines. And of course, I struggle with blending colour, especially for skin tones as well. But, after all that, I am fairly pleased with how he came out. Thank goodness.

To everyone commenting about the red in my art, your tags always make my day <3
This is how I make my art So Red: I use brush pens from the Lyra and Tombow brands, they blend really well, and the red hues are perfectly bright for my taste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I scan everything with CamScannner, under direct light, to increase contrast and blend the colours even more. The not yet scanned drawings look like this, I used a new pen for the first three drawings, and an old one for the last three, the difference is pretty evident:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't always make a pencil sketch before the line art, I prefer to sketch outfits directly in colour, adding the black lines later and filling the rest with brush pens, that's why I often end up with colour blocks.

Toby Rogers | Ticci Toby Headcanons
Word Count: 1,431
Warning: "Ticci" Toby Rogers is a character known from Creepypasta. He is one of Slenderman's proxies, and as such is a serial killer. He suffers from varies ailments, and grew up in an abusive household.
As a result of Toby's characterization, there will be mentions of mental illness, alcoholism, and abuse. There may be mentions of self-harm, and murder. For the most part, this should be fluff, I just thought that I should put a warning for anyone not familiar with the character.
He plays the piano. Lyra took piano lessons when she was little, and Toby would always watch from the doorway, too shy to come in the room. Eventually Lyra taught him how to play simple songs and melodies, and it would calm him after his father abused him.
Tumblr media
His favourite music is either folk music, or silly songs that make him laugh. He loves Lord Huron.
When Toby was little, his mother had a CD that she would play in the car with the story of Paul Bunyan and his giant blue ox. It always made him smile, and even now he’ll play it in the car if he’s going to be driving for a long time (this is something that used to annoy Masky the first few times it happened, but as they got to know each other better Tim realised that it was one of Toby’s few good memories from his childhood and now he doesn’t bother him about it.)
He has twinkly star shaped string-lights wrapped around the foot board of his bed frame. Lyra gave them to him when he was around 5 or 6, and told him that so long as the stars shine she would always there to protect him. After she died he realised that it had been little more than a childish story told to a scared little boy, he still keeps them there as a reminder of his sister.
Tumblr media
Toby is really good at colouring. He’s not much of a fan of drawing, but he keeps an old metal lunchbox his mother gave him when his father was out of the house in his room next to a stack of various colouring books, and it’s filled with Coloured pencils. His favourite colours (brown, teal, orange, green) are obvious from how frequently used those pencils are.
Tumblr media
Lyra used to wear this gold heart shaped locket that had belonged to their grandmother, she kept a picture of the two of them from when Toby was around 6 years old in it. It’s Toby’s most prized possession, and he doesn’t go anywhere without it, even as it tarnishes and the gold plating wears away to reveal what’s underneath.
When Toby gets sad or is disappointed over something, he gets this puppy dog look on his face. It’s not even intentional, he just looks like a sad puppy dog when he’s upset.
His favourite type of weather is rainy. He loves thunder storms, they always make him feel more relaxed and less anxious. Sitting next to his bedroom window during a rainstorm never fails to bring a soft smile to his face.
Coffee sort of calms him down, but he drinks his coffee with so much sugar in it that he gets hyper from that instead.
Waffles are his favourite food, but only homemade ones. The boxed frozen ones taste like stale cardboard to him, and he’d rather eat something else than eat something that tastes like cardboard (that said, he will eat frozen waffles if he’s hungry enough, granted he will eat just about anything if he’s hungry enough)
He has a really high metabolism, so no matter how much he eats, and he eats a lot, Toby is always pretty skinny. He’s really strong, but you’d never think so based on how skinny he is.
He’s tall. One of the things he was teased for in school before his parents pulled him out was how tall he was, at 15 he was probably around 6 feet tall, and by the time he was 18, Toby was 6”3’. This didn’t bother him as much as the rest of what he was bullied for, since this usually was the least vicious of the verbal attacks he endured, so it’s not likely to come up, especially if the topic of being bullied can be avoided all together
He wasn’t diagnosed with Tourettes until he was around 12. You might think it would have been fairly obvious, but his dad didn’t care, and his mom was more worried about other things.
If you let him, he’d love to paint your nails for you. He just likes doing it, and enjoys the whole process
When Toby is stressed out his tics get much worse than usual, when he’s truly calm and feels secure and safe, his tics are fewer, and not as severe
He collects shoe boxes full of little knickknacks. missing buttons, single pieces of old puzzles he no longer has, spare change, lost dice, Polaroids he’s either taken or been in, random plastic animals (the kind you could find at the craft store), or little toy cars, and anything else he finds and thinks is interesting. He doesn’t steal these things, in fact a lot of these things, the toys especially, are from when he was little and he keeps them mostly for the good memories they hold, or to maybe one day give them to his own children if he ever has any.
Tumblr media
He’s incredibly good at math and literature. Toby liked being able to figure out the answer to a problem, or being able to figure out the motive behind a certain character’s actions in a book, and he always wrote the most insightful chapter analysis in his class. This was mostly because there was always a solution, even if he didn’t know how to find it at first, and the characters, even the horrible ones, always had a reason that made some sense.
Thanksgiving was always his favourite holiday. There was always so much food, and despite his father getting drunk like he always did, he was always happy, and was rarely abusive during thanksgiving weekends.
He loves woodworking. Maybe a bit obvious, but, he finds the repetitive actions and the certainty of each step that needs to be taken soothing, and the ability to have a thing that he made at the end of the process rewarding.
Toby can be a bit of a neat freak. His childhood bedroom, and his current bedroom too, was always filled with knickknacks, but they were always in their proper place, and his room was always clean. He didn’t have much control over anything in his life, and this was one thing he could control.
After Lyra died, things got worse for him. Not only because his sister wasn’t there to help him or protect him anymore, but because Toby’s father dealt with his own grief by trying to inflict more pain on Toby, and his mother spent days and weeks at a time in bed crying. He’d never felt more alone.
He loves putting together jigsaw puzzles or playing board games with his loved ones. Any chance he gets, Toby will go to the hall closet and pull out a board game or puzzle that looks interesting with the biggest grin on his face. His favourite game is Candy Land.
Tumblr media
One of his favourite places to go is a diner. No matter where it is, there’s always something very familiar about diners that Toby finds comfortable, and they serve waffles.
Tumblr media
The only thing he is capable of cooking for himself is a grilled cheese sandwich and canned soup, but if he makes you a sandwich, it will be the best damn grilled cheese you will ever have.
He keeps a note in his wallet that his sister wrote for to him when he was little and another one that his mother wrote for him. He likes keeping something with their handwriting with him, it makes him feel closer to them.
When Toby was little, his mother had a swear jar. It would sit on the kitchen counter, and any time Toby or Lyra, or really anyone in his parent’s house would swear, they would have to put a dollar in the jar. Even Toby’s father, drunk abusive asshole that he was, knew better than to try and avoid the swear jar. It was the one thing his mother would not backdown on. The only exception was if Toby cursed involuntarily, and there was always an obvious distinction between his tics and when he would intentionally curse.
Smoking makes him anxious and panicky. He’s smoked weed exactly once in his life and felt like he couldn’t breath, it’s not a feeling he ever wants to experience again, so he doesn’t smoke.
When Toby goes to a restaurant with a soda fountain, he will always order the largest size drink he can, and then minx every drink offered together in the one cup. It leads to some interesting combinations, but he's yet to find one he doesn't like.
When Toby eats raspberries, he puts them on his fingers first, and then eats them off one by one.
Tumblr media
---
A/N: As promised, whether you wanted them or not, here is the first set of head cannons from Creepypasta/MH. Sorry for any mistakes, I wrote these in the notes on my phone while watching my younger siblings, who are, by the way, to thank for my reintroduction to CP and MH. My little sister found Marble Hornets on YouTube, did a pterodactyl screech for her twin brother, and now my mother has decided that they can watch the videos if I watch with them.
I also had to much free time on my hands while babysitting, so I made an aesthetic collection of photos I found online for Toby, Masky, and We'll see who else I find stuff for. I'll add pictures where I can to my headcanons, but I don't own any of them, unless stated otherwise. These pictures are not downloaded from Tumblr, I think most of them I found on Pinterest, so I don't have a clue who does own them.

Hiii I was wondering if you'd be willing to share what supplies you use for your drawings?? I am in AWE of how smooth your shading is and how deep the dark shades are!!
Hello! (✿◡‿◡) I feel like this question is about graphite stuff, so for those drawings I mainly use HB, 2B (my main workhorse) and 4B mechanical pencils (0.3 and 0.5 mm) plus some regular ones thrown in (HB, 2B, 6B and/or 9B, depending on what I feel like using, idk). Any brand will do, but of regular graphite pencils I prefer Lyra, Faber-Castell or Staedtler (over Derwent, for example). For the darkest bits I sometimes also use Derwent Onyx or a black coloured pencil (Staedtler Ergosoft or just a random one). I blend with blending stumps, tissues and cotton buds. I use both kneaded and regular erasers. Tombow Mono Zero (round) is my absolute favourite for detail work and hair. Edit: I forgot to add that I also use Kuretake white ink to make the eyes pop.

art by Linetta
Seasoning: Cinnamon.
Weather: Typical Indian summer, warm early autumn.
Colour: Dark blue
Sky: Clear and blue
Magic Power: Divine battle powers (be it damage or buffs, but damage is more fun - clerics are not necessarily healers, you know).
House Plant: Chrysantemum. IDK why. Heard they are hard to grow and take care of at home...
Weapon: Bastard sword (obvious)
Subject: Psychology
Social Media: Blogspot or Facebook. She’d be good at writing seldom, but wholesome and interesting longreads.
Make-up product: LIpstick, a darker shade.
Ice Cube Shape: Little pumpkins! (harvest, autumn and her village origin).
Candy: Homemade hard candy of burnt sugar/honey (this reminds me of some village fest treats)
Fear: Death of her beloved and succumbing to her darker side (be it drow heritage or the spirit eater curse).
Method of Long-distance Travel: Carriage. She’s a knight, alright, but also a lady, who values comfort now that she can afford it. So riding out atop some strong and beautiful steed is more a ceremonial thing.
Art Style: pre-raphaelites and some other Victorian art (Neeshka being orientalism - can’t unsee her as an odalisque! There’s already one silly drawing and one day I’ll make a better one)
Celestial Body: Moon, obviously (devoted Eilistraee worhipper)
Mythical Creature: Elementals and telthor spirits. Strangely their presense helped suppressing and lowering spirit-eater hunger.
(this is an in-game lifehack I always use! Get as many elementals as you can: summon one yourself (with a spell or an atrifact, there’s Orglash crystal), make Gann and Kaelyn do that, Safiya too. Also good it there are peaceful theltors around. The more spirits the better. Then rest, and the hunger won’t be growing much, it may even decrease slightly).
Piece of Stationary: Charcoal / any other possible type of pencil (red chalk would be good for writing: durable, hard to erase and doesn’t stain hands that much, unlike charcoal) and paper. No, Elrin’s not an artist (though I believe her goddess values any forms of art, not only music, dance and swords). She just likes it simple and convenient. Also an old village habit from her magic studying days with Tarmas: good ink was not always available, sometimes they were using just what they could.

To celebrate this year’s Christmas, I decided to draw several of my OCs having a party together.
Cece, in yellow, got a toy wand because she loves wizards and is showing it off to her friend Tabitha, in purple, who has a new moon-shaped hairpin. Sonus, my robot character, was surprised at seeing a cute little drone pop out of his present.
Regina, in blue, wants to play her new gaming handheld already so she’s setting it up, and Rizu, in green, got a cool new microphone to use for singing.
Lyra, in red, on the other hand just came here for the cake!
You can watch the full speedpaint on YouTube
Brushes used:
Perfect Pencil by Diana McDermott (Lineart)

Absolute Lightspeed Exhibition Text
Some artists complicate the creative process in the telling, but Callan Grecia insists that his is simple. Scrolling, reading and viewing are the primary inputs that fuel his imagination. He cannot approach the canvas without prior immersion in the media from which he derives his vignettes.
Grecia regards himself as a draughtsman first and a painter second, so he starts with a Lyra 6B pencil and sketchbook, using three tones against the white of the paper to draw miniatures that are then shortlisted weekly. Only the strongest concepts – usually one in five – are expanded and colourised on the canvas.
Colour adds dimensionality, but Grecia is at pains to explain how he translates monochromatic pencil tones into the vivid, unadulterated hues of ‘Absolute Lightspeed’. “I’ve never thought of myself as a colourist or someone who is attuned to colour,” he admits. The process is mostly intuitive, but he knows his work is bright, and attributes this to an eye for contrast, trained in the tropical climate of Durban.
“If I were painting in a realist way perhaps I would mix colours, but I am so sure I am not a colourist that I don’t mix,” says Grecia with confidence in his choice of paint brand. The 50 non-standardised colours of Heritage Craft Acrylic Paints offer Grecia the palette and opacity he feels he needs to bring his best ideas to life.
Painting with acrylics was not easy for the self-described “bad-ass with oil paints”. “I sucked in the beginning,” due to the feel of the medium. Adjusting to the house-paint-like quality of acrylic necessitated a base coat on the canvas just so the artist’s brush would glide familiarly. This new consideration, along with others, forced changes in the way Grecia paints: a challenge the artist claims to enjoy in this relatively new, three-year journey with acrylics.
As a South African artist descended from the diasporic Indian community of Durban – the largest in the world outside of India – Grecia’s oeuvre has had to resist the imposition that it be a commentary on Indian positionality in a country obsessed with black-white relations. It is easy to read the alien motif ubiquitous in ‘Absolute Lightspeed’ as the marker of an outsider in racial terms, but it is simultaneously more and less than this interpretation. The alien iconography is representative of a personal aesthetics, influenced by the artist’s immersion in the popular imaginary of the 90s. Films likeIndependence Day (1996) and television programmes such as The Outer Limits (1995) centred extraterrestrials in the public consciousness, providing Grecia with an easily recognisable reference for feelings of isolation and rebellion.
The self-identifying “weird boy no one understands” conceals his true nature behind a mask and hints at this coping mechanism by depicting alien facades as disembodied, floating, two-dimensional headwear that could be applied to the face by a palm of the hand. Sometimes Grecia includes a green three-fingered salute to claim possession of a hidden self, ward off unwanted attention, or recognise those engaged in similar politics of the self.
“Painting is world-building,” proclaims Grecia, for a self in need of shelter and modes of representation. In an industry where taste-making is often the preserve of painters from wealthy families with artistic pedigree, the artist of colour at work on an autobiographical symbology must guard against an inferiority complex. Grecia bestows upon himself the permission to turn 90s pop-culture references such as the Nike swoosh or the E30 BMW 325is, into codes that not only edify but signify homage and aspiration.
In the Durban-based Indian community, the belief is that only those who have “made it” can afford face-brick homes. So the self-described “charo” in Grecia tips his hat to this marker of success by including brickwork in the background and edges of his frames. When the artist was growing up, his family was obsessed with the attainment of a particular type of vase that would communicate their taste and status to visitors. As a result, vases proliferate ‘Absolute Lightspeed’, signalling – tongue in cheek – the artist’s attainment of a certain prominence. The vases also hark back to a time when Grecia was cutting his teeth drawing still-lifes, thereby tracing the journey from relative anonymity to international solo exhibitions. As memento mori, the flower housing is a reminder to smell the roses before they are ultimately cast on the casket. Get the praise while it is due because eulogies are not for the departed.
That being said, ‘Absolute Lightspeed’ is not overly concerned with mortality, though the temptation exists to impose a preoccupation with death on the portals propagating the series. Through them, Grecia doffs a cap to one of his favourite paintings: Peter Doig’s Tunnel Painting (Country-rock) of the year 2000. “I like the open-endedness,” Grecia explains of the exploration of divine pathways, teleportation, and the third-eye in ‘Absolute Lightspeed’. The humble smartphone, too, functions as a transportive device, though one leading not, necessarily, to the palace of wisdom. “I don’t have all the answers,” Grecia admits while searching for them in the writings of cultural theorist and aesthetic philosopher Paul Virilio.
“I only read him,” says Grecia of the urbanist whose final project involved building the first Museum of the Accident. Virilio believed that technology cannot exist without the potential for accidents. Technology – epitomised by television in his time – separates us from the events of real space and time. It causes us to lose sight of the immediate horizon and resort to the indirect horizon of the dissimulated environment. The Accident, then, functions as a fractal meteorite hailing from a propitious darkness concealing future collisions. It is a comet hurtling through Grecia’s open-ended portals, to shock you back into corporeality.
Given that Virilio also concerned himself with the science and logic of speed in a field of study he coined as dromology, considerations of society’s consumption of contemporary media abide in Grecia’s work. The speed at which information is disseminated and consumed influences its very nature, and leads to the dominance of faster informational streams over those that are slower.
Teleport or pass through at ‘Absolute Lightspeed’ and salute the human faces behind alien masks. Navigate 90s folklore through Grecia’s emblematic retelling. Nibble on the knick-knacks that found their way to the artist’s childhood home, and reconcile depressing art memes with a cool Einstein reference in Grecia’s second solo show of the year.
Lumumba Mthembu is an arts reviewer and regular contributor to the Mail & Guardian, ArtThrob and Bubblegum Club. Currently he is the in-house writer for the Contemporary Archive Project, a non-profit organisation chronicling Durban documentary photography made since 2000.
‘Absolute Lightspeed’ was exhibited at Gallery KICHE in Seoul, South Korea, from the 30th of August until the 24th of September 2022. For more information, please visit Gallery KICHE.

Counting pencils!
Only coloured pencils, no graphite, no charcoal, nothing like that.
First, Derwent with 72 Coloursofts. Second, more Derwent stuff. 20 Metallics and my absolutely beloved Drawing set of 24.
Tumblr media
Now more pencils from something else. Koh-i-Noor, surprisingly I don't have many of them considering how big of sets those can have.
Tumblr media
Now, things I imported.
Yes, I went all the way to get those pencils here when they're not available.
Deli (72):
Tumblr media
Three sets of Castle Art (120+48+48).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, main set of 72 and grey set of 12.
Tumblr media
I also got some children's sets just because
a) shiny (10 + 12 + 12)
Tumblr media
b) 50 pastel colours, that I heard of first, funny thing, in a British YouTube video.
Tumblr media
Giotto Stilnovo, main set of 50 and skintone set of 12:

And lastly, 18 backup pencils:
Tumblr media
Those should make...
688 coloured pencils.

But then, two Doctor McCoys just might bring the level of medical efficiency on this ship up to acceptable level!
- Spock.
Doctor McCoy I drew in March last year vs Doctor McCoy I drew in March this year! There’s some obvious improvement, but I’m still kind of pleased with the one on the left, despite it looking very washed out (plus, I drew that one before I had my retractable eraser, which is an absolute must for drawings this small!)

Art supply favourites
For the past few years I’ve been (most of the time) unconsciously hoarding all sorts of art supplies, from papers and sketchbooks to pencils, pens and watercolours. I love trying out things and during my first visits to the art store I kept seeing new products popping up that my curiosity pushed me to try. So over time I ended up having too much of various types of pens, inks, pencils, notebooks…
