I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR QUESTIONS LIKE THESE OMGLMGOMGOMGSCHJHHHHHHHH OK SO

She practically ran away from home and came to the US at 17, Started going by the name Lacy. What her own parents/home life were like, what her name originally was, she was reluctant to speak of and by the time Max was born she just refuses to his face to tell him and gets defensive when asked.

She had a highschool romance but he(Devon) was socially a loser. Lacy so to speak kept it under wraps because of that, to not be seen with him. She genuinely loved him but he didn't work for how she wanted to be perceived. She got pregnant accidentally basically right out of HS and it wasn't what she wanted, atleast not now, but they talked it out and decided they could make it work, and it did for awhile, until it didn't. Where she lived, worked, and was with, was nothing like how she imagined she wanted it to be like.

She left them both and a few years later met a different man, (Arjun) they started dating. (This isn't all going to be about her love life I swear she's got more to her then that I'm just getting backstory out of the way)

Lacy has this problem where she HAS to be needed. Important to people. Revered by a community and a home that's dependent on her to function. Arjun subtly starts picking up she might not be?? A good person?? but HE has this problem where he hates himself, but doesn't want to be ALONE with himself. He has a history of dragging other people down, but this time, he's actually considering just leaving.

Lacy is smart enough to figure that out and [TW, breach of intimate consent] messes with protection to intentionally baby trap him.

After Max is born she wants to name him Maxwell but Arjun wants to name him Makali. Alot of conflict between them is Lacy's internalized racism and she just lets him put that name on the birth certificate to shut him up, and keeps calling him Maxwell.

After Max starts going to camp he decides he's not going to use either and just go by Max.

Lacy works an office job she pours alot of her effort into and has worked herself up to a sales manager position or something similar. Affording them a middle class home rental near/practically In the city era. (Decent size, neighbor's place built in joint. V Small backyard.) She's constantly aiming higher and loves to enjoy upper class luxuries wherever she can. In home decor, fashions, ect. Climbing both the social and finical ladder with almost this desperation but only slow progress.

She's this perfectionist, their small yard has a tiny Rose bush she trims every single thorn off of herself because she loves the look of them but hates getting pricked even if the gloves don't make it hurt. (Probably a metaphor in there somewhere. You decide)

She's incredibly talented in origami and piano, but dropped origami entirely after too many crumbled up or ripped papers.

She put Max through tapdancing, violin, and taught him piano herself. He's not the best in any group and never gets spotlight during any recitals.

Her abuse towards Max- it's /rarely/ ever physical. It's way more mental, and verbal. She convinced him from a very early age he needs her to live. She can leave him but he can't leave her he should be thankful she hasn't. He needs to work harder to not waste how far she's gotten already. He needs to outwardly show people the best version of himself he can even if it's a lie. Ect ect ect. I'll go more in depth on all that if asked.

His father is more complicit in just letting this all happen, it's less than what he went through as a kid and believes sometimes you just get stuck with the short end of the stick. They're still in this codependent relationship. She needs someone reliant on her, despite resenting him for how much so he is. He somewhat hates her as a person now sometimes, but can't stand the thought of not having her company to keep him from being lonely. Arjun neglects Max and enables his mother's abuse by not doing anything, he himself is not a victim of it so he's fully well in a position to help, he just doesn't to not rock the boat. They fight mutually. They're both bad to and for each other.

When Max was younger she gave him Mr HoneyNuts. Despite wanting a girl originally, it didn't matter after he was born, she was incredibly affectionate towards Max a few times he can recall while being that young.

He holds onto Mr.HoneyNuts with the belief subconsciously she still holds that affection towards him. She's just too busy or too stressed to show it as often now.

Lacy with her perfectionist nature and intense goals always in mind, she's this master schemer, always knowing the exact words to say What to do. Yet this explosive anger she actually manages to hide around others. It's where Max gets it from, but Max's version is rough around the edges.

In some AUs she's prepared to mold him for as many years as it takes, in others, she's ready to give up. He's been making scenes, uncooperative, failing academically, not trying at anything.

When her life is heading isn't where she imagined it to be.

She'll leave both of them.

She's smart, can't leave any loose ends to ruin any reputation she tries to build somewhere else, so if it need be she could get rid of Max with no way of him ever finding her.

Another ask! Wowie Kazowie. I wanted to say I just went through the Alvin's Infurno tag because I realized you've been answering questions about it and it's prompted me to think about my own anthro story and how much they contrast with each other.

I have some similar themes in mind, including my own 100% terrible character who is also someone who grooms a 16 year old (is also a serial killer but thats a whole other can of worms), however in mine it's more of a commentary on the systemic aspects of grooming and the sexual abuse of teenagers.

Specifically I decided to make the abuser in question a straight, cis white-coded woman in her twenties who had wealthy parents, and her victim (the main character) a latino black-coded queer kid dealing with mental illness.

Though I agree a lot with your philosophies, I made the abuser extremely unsympathetic because personally I was really worried about people excusing the actions of someone adjacent to white femininity. Particularly, a lot of black kids are seen as aggressors and I didn't want to compromise on the main character being kinda shitty because I know myself as someone who can be quite shitty sometimes. So making her as unsympathetic as possible in actions was the compromise I chose in order to highlight how its privilege which allowed her to do what she does to her victims, not skill or being a mastermind. Despite everyone knowing her to be terrible cruel and mean, nobody investigates it because she is harmless to authority as someone in the position of authority.

Seeing your story come to fruition makes me wonder how I would've done this aspect of my story differently had I wanted it to be the whole focus of a story rather than just one piece of my comfort oc's torture nexus. I think it's likely I would have had something similar to your story, but I do think I would've approached hell differently.

I always imagined hell to be a place where people who feel guilty go to, and not necessarily people who 'deserve' (in quotes because its subjective) it go to. Like you I've always found the idea of christian heaven and hell to be strange, I found myself drawn to the idea that the afterlife is a state of mind you walk yourself into.

I've been in positions where my family was unable to find homes and I've had to stay in motels and hotels on several occasions (i lived in a hotel for three months at one point) and there's something oddly nostalgic to me about being stuck in a place - a motel/hotel - that you're not supposed to be in for a longer time than you should.

thank you so much for your thoughts! i love it when people come and tell me about their own stories that deal with similar issues. i think in your story’s case highlighting the abuser’s unsympatheticness works given you’re going for a critique of systemic and societal power structures and how they intersect with race. of course you can deal with more than one idea per story but if you’re going for a more straightforward critique rather than an introspective character study, it makes sense to put the brunt of the empathy you want your reader to feel on the victim, rather than the aggressor.

So we'll probably have to agree to disagree on a Gwiles ship (for a number of reasons, but in no dimension or version do I think Gwen should be Miles' main or only option for a romantic interest or relationship) :). But I appreciate your insights, and loved your response to the question "what makes Miles compelling as Spider-Man?" from a few weeks ago. I am kinda trying to figure out what Marvel is doing exactly? Between using just Miles' name instead of Spider-Man for the upcoming Strange Academy release, and Ziglar basically minimizing Miles in his own comic during this latest run in order to feature characters Ziglar seems to be enamored with, all while having characters constantly call Miles "boy" (see Mr. Morales who apparently has entered a black exploitation film), "kid" (practically every character being forced into the run is calling Miles this right now, which is funny given ATSV's take rightfully pushing back on that), "newbie" (Stark in the latest issue…meanwhile Civil War was a thing), basically everything but his name or Spider-Man…it's frustrating. Like, is Miles getting too popular for them or something? No offense to Ziglar, but I'm currently just sticking to reading and buying Bendis and Ahmed's comics going forward. Ziglar just doesn't seem to know how to write for Miles and his supporting cast, which is fine. They should put him back on Spider Punk since he said that he's wrote for that comic based on his time in a punk band. On top of that he hasn't done anything original so far? He's acknowledged Rabble is basically a reskin of Tinkerer from the Playstation game, he's obviously a fan of the Flash tv show given the electric sword (the idea of Miles' venom powers continuing to evolve in more novel and powerful ways is great though), plus the new character Hightale who = the Flash. And Misty Knight was just going over super basic things Aaron already taught his nephew. Also, Miles as any kind of detective was setup better by Bendis when he was toying with the idea of turning him into an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D (and that kinda came out of no where). If they extend Ziglar's time, it sounds like his plan is to constantly keep doing crossovers of other characters as "mentors", and given how he's handled that so far, I would not be to happy buying this run. :( Do you have a writer or writers in mind that you would like to see on Miles' comic? To be honest, I don't think there needs to be a ton of angst, I like that he has a great group of people in his life who know about him and have his and each others back against all odds (you can't tell me that comic Ganke wouldn't have tried to fight Miguel in ATSV even though he would lose, and Tiana would have 100% tried to pick Miguel up and drop him from the train if she saw him treating and talking to Miles like he did XD), it's one of the things that adds to Miles' uniqueness. But your analysis of Miles gets things about his character that the current run/Ziglar seems to be missing. On the plus side, the artwork is pretty good! And maybe the run will get better?

Eesh. I checked out of Ziglar’s run a while back, seems my criticisms with him minimizing Miles as Spider-Man in his own run hasn’t gotten any better, I probably made the right choice. Makes me sad though. I dislike Ahmed’s run a lot, but he at least had Miles on equal footing with the more seasoned guest stars like Captain America.

The disconnect is that Ziglar thinks Miles’ appeal lies in his youth. He thinks he’s a rookie, far out of his depth and in desperate need of guidance (from people he’s accomplished more than and with basic things he’s been doing since 2015 at minimum). I appreciate the callback to his origin from 2011, but it’s like he stopped reading that samw. Whoever I’d pick to write him moving forward would obviously be more up to speed on his history and the things that actually make him unique, but I honestly don’t trust that from anyone besides Phil Lord/Chris Miller, or Bendis. I always get the impression that everyone else either sees him as a blank slate, someone they need to reinvent or “fix”, if they simply don’t get it at all.

But besides that, if I could, I’d have his stories once again set in the Ultimate universe. Pulling him out erased one of his most prominent conflicts as someone bearing a legacy that makes him a target, that jeopardizes his future, and altered his relationship with his parents, which is why his comics were immediately made more lightheartedly and silly when he crossed over even with Bendis at the pen, because not only was Peter Parker alive and well, Miles was now one of four Spider-Men.

We’ll also have to agree to disagree on there not needing to be a ton of angst, I enjoy that Miles can inspire hope as much as the next guy, and I wish they’d let him do stupid fun teen shit without having to learn some sort of lesson at the end, but in the same vein that light without shadow is blinding, hope without tragedy is hollow. And as someone who’s been reading since Spider-Man cost him his uncle and [redacted until a mutual finishes the second volume], his stories have felt hollow to me for a very long time.

The artwork is good, but I don’t have faith that the writing’ll get better. I already held out hope that his comics would suddenly recapture that spark for eight years now.

One thing that helped me get my shit together was buying nice Sanrio pouches and bags to hold my loose pens and erasers, then I got one for my cosmetics, another for my drawing pens, etc. It snowballed and now almost everything that was loose is in a cute pouch or box. Utilizing space is huge too, I took a lot of inspo from photos of small and micro apartments and of course otaku rooms.

Gamer tip: monitor stands, shoe racks, mounted shelving or bakers racks are your best friend. Even if your stuff looks like dingy moe rainbow vomit when strewn across your desk and room it will look nicer when arranged on simple furnishings that let them pop. It looks less like a hoard and more like organized chaos. It's extra pleasing when the furniture all matches perfectly like an IKEA set or the furinno desk and shelf I have.

Another thing you can do is whittle down what you want to show off in your room, if you have any items you don't care too much for you can stash those and save that room for your fav stuff. Less can be more especially if you have scales or big plushes you want to show.

If you're the kind of person who is really anal retentive about symmetry and balance you can color coordinate and arrange items by size, source material/brand, etc. Little things like that can transform a shelf or display.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one

his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.

ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

ok yknow what Edit: i shouldve made it even more explicit at the end of this post, i hadnt thought i would need to since i started the post with this, but i think a few too many people are missing my point so i just wanna clarify. i shouldnt have said 'really clashed' and left it at that because yeah they did, but it wasnt just their opposite methods of communication, it is also very much that toshiro was experiencing microaggressions via laios. it may have been unintentional on laios's part, but it still happened and wore him down, made it harder for him to communicate on top of both the more subtle social cues that he was raised with and his own communication difficulties. i also want to say that the fandom reaction to toshiro and the complete ignorance of this point is also racist tbh or at the very least ignorant. i understand that the anime did not cover this panel, and neither did the manga, as this was an omake, but im gonna be real with you guys. there are enough context clues within the story to clue you into this. if you didnt pick up on it thats ok, but i think this is a good lesson in picking up subtext in the stories that youre watching and/or reading. kui shouldnt have to explicitly say 'by the way laios was racist to toshiro' for this point to be understood, and at the very least, when the author portrays a character in a sympathetic light (as kui clearly does) it should make you question Why they are doing so and what makes them sympathetic, rather than youre immediate and only reaction to be 'well i hated what this guy did/said so i hate them and they suck'. idk exactly how to finish this, just. idk. question your biases and gut reactions to things you see in media and stories, and think about whether or not theres subtext that youre missing.
