Part 2 of marking designs on the cephs: Sol n Ami :)))
as written, Sol is based on a longfin inshore squid and Ami is a day octopus! They are portrayed as their current ages :)
Sol used to be an ex competitive player even while she joined the Squidbeak Splatoon because at the time, that's how she was lowkey making income. After the battle with Octavio, she was able to score a job/apprenticeship under Sheldon and has been learning about weaponry, even helps out in the shop with him. Sol sometimes dreads when there's a new weapon because she knows Sheldon is going to talk about it for maybe.. hours. But she tries to fight the urge to almost pass out and hear him cause she admires his passion about it, also to just keep notes in the future too.
Ami is still going strong on Grizzco, but she has been taking some classes towards horticulture. She likes plants :)) Sol always insists on Ami to take a breather from Salmon Run to focus on her classes so she sometimes take a whole week break for it, Sol makes sure on it hehe.
Her brother (which I must write/draw out soon within what I see in my head on how this story goes- gosh im a mess @-@ ), Suke, is just exploring what the overworld land has to offer after he had been stuck in the Metro. He's been going to different cities and what seems like months, comes back to see Ami and Sol at their apartment. He's rather nomadic and draws a lot within his small wanderings, its like when he's done filling out his sketchbooks he comes back. He'll always be overjoyed to see how happy his sister is, but still feels rather awkward around Riley. Suke leaves after maybe a month or more (depending on how he felt on his trips) when hanging around with his sister, since he's heard that Ami took a liking to plants, he sends some seed packets stapled to a postcard from places he went :))
here are some overviews
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they play turf/anarchy together for fun ^^ Sol likes supporting Ami if she's trying to be a slayer in the match, and protects her if Ami's anchoring.

This took forever, but here is Harlow’s Salmon Running team!
EVP Grizzco. Employees often work in tight-knit teams of 4-7, depending on stage size and the pre-calculated hazard level.
This team has gone through a quite a few members over the years (through quitting or unfortunate, salmonid-related circumstances), but they still remain one of the most reliable teams in the Splatlands.
From left to right:
Delle Enigmata (Hawaiian Bobtail Squid), a relatively new member to the team with a background in automotive mechanics. She can quickly fix weapons and gear when they're in a pinch.
Lucien or “Lucy” Vespinia (Emperor squid), originally from the Deepsea Metro, they’re also an unlicensed helicopter pilot. They help take out boss salmonids on the shoreline, they manually count every flyfish they've ever shot since their first deployment.
Harlow Wellington (New Zealand Arrow Squid), best girl, she’s been Salmon Running for most of her life now. It's rough. Her fast swimming speed makes her great for collecting eggs.
Tangle Longfin (Caribbean Reef Squid), being denied from the military for his hearing loss, he opted to work for Grizzco. instead. He's quite resilient and can handle hordes pretty well.
Cherry Dofeini (Giant Pacific Octopus), A former high-ranking officer in the Octarian Army, she ran away to the Splatlands. Her understanding of the Inkling language is limited, but she's likeable and gets the job done.

Sisyphish (Lion's Mane Jellyfish) and Minnows (White Ribbon Eel) Prime
Tumblr media
Glubriel (Caribbean Reef Squid)
Tumblr media
SubmarV1ne (Longfin Mako Shark (+ Sailfish)) and SubmarV2ne (Great White Shark (+ Sailfish)) (also inspired by the little articulated snake toys)
Rambling about why I chose the beasts that I did under the cut.
Originally I was gonna use yellow tangs for Sisyphus but then I was looking at his design and was not sure how I would deal with his face while going with a fish for the tail. And then I remembered that jellies' tentacles kinda look like the way his hair does in the concept art, and while I was looking for yellow jellies I saw a lion's mane and went. Yes, that one. Very happy with the way it looks it was a lot of fun to draw.
Minos was originally gonna be a deep sea giant isopod, but after I remembered that jellyfish existed I considered going with a sea snake, couldn't find ANY naturally white snakes, thought about an albino moray, then found out about white ribbon eels (which are related to morays, very cool). He's technically the only fish unless you count the V models jkgjkhgf
Gabriel was originally gonna be a paradise/mustard gas betta but I ended up deciding that if I ever drew/wrote about them all I would be so annoyed about there being just. One freshwater fish in the ocean with saltwater creatures just,, bothered me so much that man would be In Pain. So I decided to look for color changing sea creatures, most cephalopods obviously, and one of the first ones that came up was the Caribbean reef squid. I checked to see if they could be red and they sure could so I decided that worked.
Also, his crown(?) is meant to look like gorgonian coral.
V1 was originally going to be a shortfin mako because they're slightly faster, but the silhouette was so similar that I was STRUGGLING to find differences. Longfin wasn't much better though. Regardless, mako shark because they're known for being the fastest shark and among the fastest fish.
V2 is a great white because strong scary y'know y'know. I considered dunkleosteus for the same reasons, but switched to a shark because V1 was also gonna be one and I wanted them to mostly match.
V1 and V2 both have two sailfin sails because 1. big fin to mimic their wings, 2. fast fish. Very cool.
Also the doodles on them are meant to show that the sails can fold back for speed and open to stop quick. The other one is to show that they can swap the tails out for legs if they wanted to.

Going out to sea
As one of the cold-tolerant people on staff, I go out to sea on the long research trips in the winter when no one else likes to go. That being said, I'll be away in the North Atlantic (will probs still be able to see land) on a bottom trawl fishing vessel from Firday into next week. I'm praying the weather holds out, since I usually start losing my mind at day 5 LMAO.
This trip, we'll be testing a potential bycatch reduction device called an excluder that, hopefully, excludes a fish called a Red Hake from being caught. If all goes well, the fishermen will catch more of their target - whiting and squid - and not red hake, which are not doing well. Below are some pictures for the very scientific result we want:
Tumblr media
^ Whiting/Silver Hake - YES!
Tumblr media
Atlantic Longfin Squid / Loligo Squid - YES!
Tumblr media
Red Hake - NO!
Hope that clears it up.

To start off this blog, check out this record-breaking Lamniform! The eyes can be a dead giveaway to who this guy is- the shortfin mako shark (also known as the Isurus Oxyrinchus (scientific name, named in 1810), bonito shark or blue pointer). Found in offshore temperate and tropical waters, the shortfin mako achieved the Guinness World Record on the 18th November 2011 for the fastest shark in the ocean with a top speed of 60 mph! That's as fast as some UK motorways, so don't expect to outswim them if you're on the run from them.
🦈
Quick facts:
Class:Chondrichthyes (jawed, cartiliginous fish and shark)
Subclass:Elasmobranchii
Genus: Isurus
Subdivision: Selachimorpha
Diet: mostly cephalopods (such as squid, octopus and cuttlefish), seabirds, porpoises and bony fish like mackerels, tunas, bonitos and even swordfish. They catch their prey by jumping up and tearing bits from their sides and fins. Makos swim underneath their prey so they can see above and have a good chance of getting to the prey before it sees them.
Lifespan: 29 years (M), 32 years (F)
Long ago, the Māori people in New Zealand wore necklaces and earrings made from shark teeth. The word "Mako" in their language means either "shark" or "shark tooth." Although longfin makos don't live in the waters around New Zealand, shortfin makos do, especially in the northern part of the country.

HAHAHA MORE REASONS TO TALK ABOUT FISH
I went to the New England Aquarium recently (wish i could show photos but i cant!!! find them!!!
so here is a list of fish that I didnt find, but wish to meet someday
lampreys (neither bony nor cartilaginous! very fun lads! they dont have jaws!) and hagfish (same idea, different species. these guys spew slime all over their predators to suffocate them! they live very deep in the sea)
catfish (they look french)
tuna (very unlikely because they are sooo big! did you know that they are considered warm blooded because they are so damn fast? i like the longfin or albacore tuna best.)
a squid (another unlikely find, some of them get pretty big, but a lot remain less than a foot long, so hopefully i get to meet one)
Atlantic Torpedo (cute guys)
a puffer fish or porcupine fish, any species really. (they are round)
anyways. thank you for indulging me. and feeding the autism beast.

i looked through all the seafood and added all the ones native to Nature to Minjonet's bio cuz she surveys the fishes in their rivers. and i know Nature is technically surrounded by ocean but there's SO MANY marine fish in Nature.
like ah yes tropical river fish (corycat, ruby tetras, hatchetfish, discus), temperate freshwater fish (warmouth, rainbow trout), tropical marine fish (sunset butterflyfish, sunset sea dragon, longfin urchinbane), open ocean fish?? (sea sparrow). don't even get me started on the aquatic invertebrates. sea urchins, crayfish, squid, GIANT ISOPOD??
