The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas ruled yesterday that portions of Texas Senate Bill 1, adopted in September 2021, violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The court found that parts of S.B. 1 require officials to reject mail-in ballot applications and mail-in ballots based on errors or omissions that are not material in determining whether voters are qualified under Texas law to vote or cast a mail ballot.
“The District Court’s decision affirms what the Justice Department has argued for nearly two years: these provisions of Texas Senate Bill 1 unlawfully restrict the ability of eligible Texas voters to vote by mail and to have that vote counted,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “The Justice Department will continue to defend against unlawful efforts that undermine the right to vote and restrict participation in our democracy.”
“In requiring rejection of mail ballots and mail ballot applications from eligible voters based on minor paperwork errors or omissions, Texas Senate Bill 1 violates the Civil Rights Act,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “This ruling sends a clear message that states may not impose unlawful and unnecessary requirements that disenfranchise eligible voters seeking to participate in our democracy. The Justice Department will continue to use every available tool to protect all Americans’ right to vote and to ensure that their voices are heard.”
“The right to vote is one of the fundamental rights in our democracy,” said U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas. “This important ruling protects the rights of eligible Texas voters to cast a vote and have it counted consistent with federal law.”
The court issued a preliminary ruling yesterday in favor of the United States’ motion for summary judgment, which asserts that two provisions of S.B. 1 violate Section 101 of the Civil Rights Act by requiring rejection of mail ballots and mail ballot request forms because of paperwork errors that are not material to establishing a voter’s eligibility to cast a ballot. The first provision requires that early voting clerks “shall reject” mail ballot applications that do not include a Texas driver’s license or ID number that identifies “the same voter identified on the applicant’s application for voter registration.” The second provision provides that a mail ballot “may be accepted only if” the ID numbers on the carrier envelope or signature sheet identifies “the same voter identified on the applicant’s application for voter registration.”
Section 5.07 requires that early voting clerks “shall reject” mail ballot applications that do not include a Department of Public Safety (DPS) number or the last four digits of a Social Security Number (SSN) that identifies “the same voter identified on the applicant’s application for voter registration.” Section 5.13 provides that a mail ballot “may be accepted only if” the DPS number or last four digits of an SSN on the carrier envelope or signature sheet identifies “the same voter identified on the applicant’s application for voter registration.”
The United States presented evidence to the court that S.B. 1 has resulted in Texas election officials rejecting tens of thousands of mail ballot applications and mail ballots cast in elections since the bill was enacted in 2021. The Department asserts that these rejections violate federal law, denying Texas voters the statutory right to vote protected by Section 101.
Yesterday’s preliminary ruling from the court grants the Justice Department’s motion for summary judgment, which the Department filed in May 2023, in its entirety. The decision addresses the Justice Department’s sole pending claim in La Unión del Pueblo Entero v. Abbott, No. 5:21-cv-844 (WDTX), a case in which the United States and several private parties are challenging various aspects of S.B. 1. The court noted that the ruling will be followed in the coming weeks by a final written opinion and order. A group of private plaintiffs will be going to trial on the remaining claims in the case, which have not yet been resolved. That trial is scheduled to begin on Sept. 11.
Complaints about discriminatory practices may be reported to the Civil Rights Division through its internet reporting portal at www.civilrights.justice.gov or by calling (800) 253-3931.
Additional information about the Civil Rights Division’s work to uphold and protect the voting rights of all Americans is available on the Justice Department’s website at www.justice.gov/crt/voting-section.

I haven't seen enough people talking about the steel mill scene that shit was pure chaos. Like, let's run through the order of events:
Kristen is giving a speech to steel workers despite the fact that she's running for student government.
Ally just launching into their speech without any context.
Kristen isnt even in the place where the workers are.
Fig asking if she can "shake down" the receptionist.
Kristen refuses to give a clear answer to the receptionist and doesnt say she's running for student body president, just "president"
Campaign manager Riz rushing in, having been completely unaware they were doing this.
Fig fucking tackling the receptionist because her "attitude is harming the president".
Kristen with all 4 Dexterity runs into the steel mill and cuts her head on an active buzzsaw.
Agent Clark walks in, everybody stops silent, and calmly asks as to Wanda Childa's whereabouts. Fig (still grappling the receptionist) and Kristen (still on the floor and bleeding from her head wound) tell him she bought a train ticket to the Red Waste and he just leaves without even reacting to anything.
The receptionist thanking them for saving the world while screaming at them to leave.

The Forbidden Love I Love
I realized all my favorite ships and pairings are from a "they were not supposed to fall in love " trope. All from a tv series, too. It doesn't matter if they were the end game. They just clicked and their story were damn epic and memorable.
Here are my top 3 couples in the last 20 years
Tumblr media
Tommy and Grace from Peaky Blinders (British)
Top 1
Never had a thing for Spy x Gangster love story even on books but this one hits different. All major thanks to the actors who made is so fookin believable. Annabelle Wallis and Cillian Murphy. Both were perfectly casted. To hell with haters. Chemistry on Fire. Epic tv series but mind you, very dark, too and disturbing. Yet it has a haunting, heart wrenching beautiful love story. It makes you forget, the show is not a love story but because of these two, its a freaking ode of a Mob Boss who fell in love with a an enigmatic undercover and who moved heaven and earth grieving and trying to move on. They ended up together, short lived though tragically he is still in love with her even in the after life.

Top 2
Emperor Ta Hwan and Empress Ki (Tanyang couple)- Empress Ki (Korean)
This was my number one until PK came along but this still holds a very special place in my heart. Still the better show than PK and still has my favorite kissing scene of all time in this underwater scene. A magnificent korean tv series, with numerous awards and all star cast. Ji Chang Wook and Ha Ji Wony favorote korean pairing, ever. The 50 episodes were nothing short of incredible. Based loosely from a real Empress Ki. An epic, powerful portrayal of sad, another tragic love story with war, madness, politics, ambition and power at the forefront. My forever top Koreanovela. Very Top Notch!

Top 3
Lana and Clark - Smallville (American)
In the movies, its always Lois Lane but here, nobody can deny Kristen Kreuk and Tom Welling were pure magic on screen. It made a fandom war because Lana was supposed to be this highschool crush only yet here I am one of the "Clana"warriors lol but for 8 seasons, their love story became a star crossed one. They had so much depth and made it through more but yeah, got to stick with the comics. Still, devastatingly beautiful yet tragic and their chemistry was also insane! To this day, Smallville for me is Clark Kent and Lana Lang.

Hands down, my favorite scene of Season 2. I just think it’s the most human experience to be a afraid of losing people and more people.
When you’re young, it hurts a LOT worse.
And even when you experience loss young, sometimes it hurts worse.
I just really felt the writing and acting and music in the background.
(“Visage” Episode 11; Season 2, Smallville)

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Department of Justice has filed charges against four former and current Louisville police officers in connection with the death of Breonna Taylor. The charges include civil rights offenses, unlawful conspiracies, unconstitutional use of force and obstruction offenses.
"The federal charges announced today allege that members of a Police Investigations Unit falsified the affidavit used to obtain the search warrant of Ms. Taylor's home and that this act violated federal civil rights laws, and that those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor's death," Garland said in a news conference.
The federal charges against detective Joshua Jaynes, former Louisville Detective Kelly Goodlett and Sergeant Kyle Meany allege they violated Taylor's Fourth Amendment rights when they sought a warrant to search Taylor's home while knowing they lacked probable cause, and that they knew their affidavit supporting the warrant contained false and misleading information and omitted other material information, resulting in her death.
"Among other things, the affidavit falsely claimed that officers had verified that the target of the alleged drug trafficking operation had received packages at Ms. Taylor's address. In fact, defendants Jaynes and Goodlett knew that was not true," Garland said during a press conference.
Garland also alleged that Jaynes and Goodlett knew armed officers will be carrying out the raid at Taylor's home, and that conducting the search could create "a dangerous situation for anyone who happened to be in Ms. Taylor's home."
Prosecutors allege that Jaynes and Goodlett met in a garage after Taylor's death "where they agreed to tell investigators" looking into the botched raid "a false story."
Charges have also been filed against Brett Hankison a former Louisville Metro Police officer who was involved in the death of Breonna Taylor. Hankison has been charged in a two-count indictment for deprivation of rights under color of law, both of which are civil rights offenses.
Hankison allegedly used unconstitutional excessive force during the raid when he fired 10 shots through a window and sliding glass door in Taylor's home that was covered in blinds and curtains after there was no longer a "lawful objective justifying the use of deadly force."
Hankison went to trial on state charges relating to the raid on Taylor's apartment and was found not guilty on all counts. He was charged with recklessly shooting into a neighboring apartment during the course of the raid that ended with the death of Breonna Taylor, not guilty on all three counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree.
Taylor's death sparked protests nationwide, and outrage was further inflamed after no officers were charged in relation to her fatal shooting.
"The lack of accountability showcased in every aspect of Breonna’s killing speaks to how much more work there is to be done before we can say our justice system is fair and our system of policing is protective of people of color," Taylor's attorney, Ben Crump said after Hankison's trial in March.
The Justice Department has had a pattern or practice investigation ongoing into the Louisville Police Department since April 2021. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke from DOJ's Civil Rights Division told reporters the separate investigation remains ongoing and that DOJ has a team on the ground still conducting interviews with stakeholders and are conducting ride-alongs with police there.
Louisville officers conducted a raid of Taylor's apartment on March 13, 2020, at around 12:45 a.m. When officers broke down the door to the apartment, a guest in Taylor's home, thinking it was an intruder, fired a single gunshot using a legally purchased firearm, hitting the first officer at the door. Two Louisville officers then fired a total of 22 shots into the apartment, one of which hit Taylor in the chest, according to an information filed by the Justice Department.
A third officer moved from the doorway to the side of the apartment and fired ten more shots through a window and a sliding glass door, both of which were covered with blinds and curtains, according to an information filed by the Justice Department.
Garland also alleged that officers who carried out the raid were not involved in drafting the warrant and were unaware of the false and misleading statements it contained when they carried out the raid.
Garland said he spoke with Taylor's family earlier Thursday and informed them of the charges.
"We share, but we cannot fully imagine, the grief felt by Breonna Taylor's loved ones and all of those affected by the events of March 13, 2020. Breonna Taylor should be alive today," Garland said.

Some Moms are Bad, and That’s Ok
The writer reviews "Bad Moms" (2016), a comedy about a mother navigating work, parenthood, and personal life after discovering her husband's affair. She praises its humor, relatable characters, and portrayal of the pressures on mothers.
While I own “Bad Moms” (2016) on Blu-Ray, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before. I’ve seen the sequel, which I will be watching next, because a friend dragged me to see it in theaters, I’d had no prior interest; 6 years later, I figured, why not. I don’t remember anything about the sequel other than it being a Christmas movie, so it will be interesting to see if I like these films or if I’m…
