Rin feelings for Kagura and their bond as foster siblings

Rin and Kagura's foster sibling relationship may be rocky but its clear they both care about eachother. Siblings don't always get along. Sometimes being close to someone involves petty arguments and cruel remarks (like rin telling kagura her love is fake). A lot of siblings aren't exactly super close and loving, sometimes there's animosity, but still a sense of loyalty for those you're stuck with. Rin didn't get that from her own family, and she didnt choose kagura's, but kagura and her mother are loyal to her. That's what it's about at its core. But more importantly, a lot of subtlety was lost in the anime.

It's important to realize that most of the early stuff we saw of Rin was her at her worst. She was pushing everyone away. Haru, Hiro, kagura. She was trying to push them away to protect them while she risked her life to free Haru from the curse.

Takaya sensei has also said that Rin got into fashion partially as a result of living with Kagura (and that haru made her acessories lol). And speaking of fashion, we see Rin's sense of fashion change of her arc is resolved. She goes from wearing a lot of tight clothes. To wearing more loose fitting items. This change helps illustrate her personality softening and her no longer feeling the need the need to be held tightly. It shows her being more comfortable and relaxed

There were great moments that show Rin and Kagura's character development that were left out of the anime. Like how rin snapped at kagura for hitting tohru and how kagura apologized and comforted her with a hug. And then later when kagura is whining, she asks rin to comfort her, rin calls her annoying but her expression is softer, and she doesn't try to remove kagura from her shoulder. Sensei's (kyo's dad's) assistant even comments on how they've gotten much closer recently.

Rin is just a hit of a tsundere. We see it in her interactions with tohru and haru as well. She gets embarrassed and gets a little obstinant about hiding her true feelings.

This is why moments like these are important and the anime butchering the finale season is such a tragedy. We get the core character arcs but we don't really get to see how the characters change. It's why the manga is a well written masterpiece and the anime falls short. Too many stories tell and don't show. Fruits basket shows how the characters change, even characters who didn't get much attention like Ritsu.

Bonus

I primarily focused on Rin in thus analysis because I saw someone saying they believe Rin doesn't like Kagura, but there are multiple clear moments of affection on Kagura's side and I'd like to briefly mention a few.

Like kagura going to visit Rin and stay with her instead of attending the barbecue at Shigure's or her concern about Rin being missing, and wondering if she was really in the hospital, as well as picking up her diploma for her graduation.

Completed watching Fruits basket

And I'm all🥹❤️❤️❤️

I'm also all😭😭😭😭

Yesterday when I saw the episode and I stopped at there to go to sleep

I woke up feeling like I never should've watched this anime, because of the way it made me feel, it made me feel so much and I worried about Kyo being in any way related to Kyoko's death

I didn't want that, and so I worried, and I woke up feeling too much, I thought, yes maybe I should've never watched this, it makes me feel too much

But I did, I continued watching it

And I'm glad I did

And in a way, isn't this show exactly about it?

Don't stop halfway, don't give up, whatever the outcome is, we are ourselves, and we have to accept it

A bad situation is a bad situation, but we can accept it, we can look for the good within it, we can hug our fears, we can choose to do something about everything and do it

Locking away our feelings is the same as locking away a part of you, you might feel trapped, because you trapped a part of yourself away from you

So shouldn't we welcome all of ourselves, and embrace the parts which we want to lock away, because everything needs love, and all of you. Each and every inch of you is deserving of this love.

I love myself, and I accept myself. And I hope that everyone and everything finds themselves and the happiness that awaits them.

I'll make a note of all the words from the show that I hold dear to me, and post them.

I want to remember how this show made me feel

The feelings I feel may fade into the background

But I'll always remember feeling so strongly

I'm happy for everyone

For all of my fictional characters, for the real ones too

And everyday, I'll strive to be a better person, to others and to myself.

One more thing

I always decline when someone talks shit about themselves, but I've realised that me doing that isn't a good thing, it's my way of keeping a positive approach, but sometimes people want to hear about things as they are, and maybe I should do that and listen and understand and still be able to say, "It's okay if it's this way, but it's in your hands to do something about it, I'll be here to help, but you're the one who has to take a step further"

I've also realised from this anime, that I'm always scared or embarrassed to say the word lonely, it feels wrong, I feel ashamed even, it feels pathetic. But it's a feeling and it's okay to feel this way. At times like this, I've to reach out and everything will start feeling okay

I will hold on to these words, the poetic beauty, this anime, this feeling it made me feel, for as much time as I can🫶

When I found out Tohru was hurting as well, when she spoke about how she's not pure too

When she was lonely, when she went through things too, how she shut away parts from herself

I felt, something. Frustration maybe? More of sadness, a feeling of misery, a feeling of why. Why did she feel all of this, why. But not in a way of feeling sad for Tohru, but a way of madness, of feeling like, You can't feel this way.

And I wondered about myself. a lot at that moment.

Tohru to me looked like a happy person, a person who cares about everyone, is a friend, a mother, a family member. And resonating back on what I felt, I feel like I looked at Tohru as a character in that way. And when she broke, it felt like something that should've never happened. Because that is how I see the elder people in my family, the ones I love. So much. I can never imagine how I'd feel if I ever saw them crying, hurt, heartbroken. I don't ever want to see them feel this way. But if ever, such a thing happens, I want to be there, to repair such feelings.

I once saw my uncle almost cry, and I don't ever want to see him like that again. It stays within my mind and my heart clenches, because to me he is a strong mountain.

When she spoke about her feelings, and when she told Akito if she's pure then so Is Akito, I understood a little better of the way I felt

of the things she felt

Of how all of us are human

And how all of us feel lonely

How all of us need love

And how all of us, are all of us

....

I wasn't planning on writing this much

But, I'm glad I did

Thank you, for creating such a beautiful anime, such wonderful characters.

I'll always be grateful.

One of my most favourite lines from this anime amongst many is 'She reacts to my emotions with hers.'

I react to your emotions with mine, you may feel different, we may not agree, but you still react to my emotions with yours, ...

It's a bit wild how even the female abusers are treated seriously, especially Akito, Kagura's abuse is treated as slapstick comedy even though she's so strong she can knock someone out in one go and she struggles with anger issues.

Here is the thing, even the funny violence between Yuki and Kyo, at the beginning of the manga, is treated seriously later on because that's part of theirs trauma and they need to let go of it to move on. They are both scapegoating each other (Yuki stop earlier than Kyo because *character development*) and it's not good for theirs mental health in the long run, and the manga shows that.

But Kagura doesn't get that and it really stick out like a sore thumb when I think about it. I think her having a teeny tiny bit of an arc where she does try to stop using violence and deal with it would have been interesting to read about but Takaya doesn't really do that which is a bit of an missed opportunity if you ask me.

You froze up, blushing a dark red. "Shut up!" You growled under your breath.

You've been staring at this girl for a while. She had dark brown hair and she was wearing a green dress. She was cute, but she didn't seem to be the type to go to a party but then again you might be wrong.

"Ugh, come on, Y/n. You've been checking her out for the past hour since you spotted her." One of your friends said.

"You're making me sound like a creep." You grimaced.

"Then stop being creepy and go talk to her then." They said.

"I can't. I mean what if she has a boyfriend or what if she's not into girls." You said.

"Okay, now you're just making up excuses." Your friend said raising an eyebrow at you.

"I'm not! I just..." You trailed frowning looking at the ground.

"You won't know unless you go and talk to her. Now, Go!" They said pushing you towards the girl.

"No wait, hold on!" You protested as your friend kept pushing you until you bumped into the girl.

"Oops! Sorry about." You said.

The girl turned to look at you, she looked relieved. "Oh! You're a girl! It's fine I'm not hurt or anything." She said.

'Wait, why is she relieved that I'm a girl? Maybe she hiding from a boy that tried to put the moves on her? I mean, me too girl, me too.' You thought a bit confused.

"That's good," You smiled softly. "Hey, I haven't seen you around before. You here with someone?" You asked.

"Uh, yeah, a friend of mine invited me here." The girl said with a smile.

"Cool, I'm here with friends too, even though I'm not much of a party person but eh, I don't hate it." You chuckled.

She giggled back with a light pink blush on her cheeks.

'So cute~.' You thought blushing a bit but regained your composure.

"S-So, what's your name?" You asked her.

She smiled at you and cheerfully gave you her name. "I'm Kagura! Kagura Soma. Nice to meet you, uh..." She paused.

"Oh, I'm Y/n L/n. Nice to meet you, Kagura." You said smiling back at her.

Kagura blushed looking over to the side with a smile on her face. She knew you were a girl, but you were quite charming.

*time skip*

"Wow, really! That's amazing, Y/n!" Kagura exclaimed.

"I don't really think so, it was just a softball championship, Kagura." You said, chuckling nervously.

"Are you kidding?!" She exclaimed with a blush on her face getting into you face a bit.

You blushed from the closeness of both of your faces. She seemed offended that you'd just brush off something like a championship.

"K-Kagura..." You trailed nervously.

"You shouldn't put yourself down like that! It's an accomplishment you should cherish, you know." Kagura said.

"O-Okay, geez I get it." You said closing your eyes out of nervousness and just didn't want to make eye contact.

"Good, maybe I should come see one of your games next time." Kagura said proudly, putting her fists on her hips.

"Kagura? Do you know anything about softball?" You asked her with smirk.

She squeaked as a pink hue appeared on her cheeks. "Uh...no..." She trailed looking down at her lap fiddling with her fingers. "But, you could teach me, can't you?!" She exclaimed.

"O-Of course." You said.

"Yay!" Kagura chirped happily giving you a side hug.

You stiffened but wrapped an arm around her waist hugging her back.

Kagura blushed feeling your arm around her waist. She let go of you as you did the same.

"Kagura?" You asked.

"Yes?" She asked snapping her head towards you.

"Let's go out sometime?" You asked causally.

Her blush darkened as soon as you asked her that. "S-Sure, that sounds...fun." She smiled when she trailed.

"Cool, here's my number. Call me." You said giving her a piece of paper with your number on it.

"O-Okay." Kagura stuttered out.

"See you soon then, Kagura Soma." You said smiling at her waving goodbye joining back up with your friends to leave.

"Yeah, see you soon," Kagura smiled to herself. "Y/n L/n."
