I’m just here as your friendly neighborhood podcast listener and current layabout with not much going on.
I’ve seen a few things about Eddie and the community turning on him quickly. I think a lot of things people aren’t remembering or realizing is just how prevalent the satanic panic was, and is, in the US.
Now there’s no chance that everyone in Hawkins hated Eddie and believed the satanic stuff. I mean, look at everyone in Hellfire. I guarantee parents were wary at first but then Eddie shows up like a goofball or has a string of ma’am’s and sir’s and they realize he’s just a kid with a lot attached to his name from a lot of terrible circumstances.
Anyways. A good thing to listen to is the You’re Wrong About podcast. Specifically these episodes.

And then these two both have multiple parts to them, the first one is actually about the book that kind of jumpstarted the whole panic to begin with.
This also has multiple parts. This one is about someone getting seduced by a ‘satanic cult’.
These would have been books that while not everyone would have had one in their home, anyone who was devout or at the least religious, would have bought or read their own copy.
Basically all I’m getting at is that Eddie would have had a lot going against him. I know that a lot of people didn’t want to read Flight of Icarus but Eddie’s character is built on a very shaky foundation. The town dogpiling when the ‘Queen Bee’ gets killed, especially if they’ve already decided that he is a satanist? It was only a matter of time.

Feel like I remember there being something about Levi and Ik calling each other 'bestie' as an inside joke. Think. Nightbringer Ik slips up and calls Levi 'bestie'. She doesn't notice the mistake but Levi for some reason immediately feels the need to burst into tears
levi doesn't know how to handle the fuzzies, so he tries to rationalise it by assuming that it's just a human thing. the next time he sees ik he's like "hey there um. uh. b. bestie"
only for ik to look at him like O_O because she doesn't remember slipping up like that, so from her perspective levi's just brought up an inside joke from thousands of years in the future
they keep the joke though :) they are besties across all of time and space

These evacuated "dissidents" were quickly admitted to Ivy league and other high-prestige academic institutions in the west, some even awarded honorary degrees. Their exaggerated (and inconsistent) recollections of the protests that ended with June 4th, recounted to western media years later while living in the west, has built up the myth of a massacre of civilians by an "authoritarian and totalitarian" Chinese government. They're still making documentaries and media appearances and testifying to US Congress. The mischaracterization of the events in summer 1989 that feeds into sinophobic narratives about Chinese people and the Chinese government are built on hyperbolic recollections and outright lies, and ritualistic recounting every year by these people keeps this narrative afloat in the minds of westerners. Concern for "human rights violations," especially when exaggerated or even built on towers of lies, are a common sympathy-garnering tactic for manufacturing thirst and support for "intervention" (read: war) by portraying “enemies” as monsters, and also works to muddy the waters about actual human rights violations regularly committed by the United States, both foreign and domestic.
