Washington Post: "What Trump did in advance of the attack on the Capitol and on Jan. 6, 2021, legally disqualifies him from the presidency."
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The section disqualifies from office those who took an oath to support the Constitution and then engaged “in insurrection or rebellion against the same” or gave “aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
When a narrowly divided Colorado Supreme Court threw Trump off the state’s primary ballot in December on the basis of Section 3’s plain language, my initial reaction was, well, political — and skeptical.
Though I agreed that Trump had, indeed, engaged in insurrection, I thought it would be best for the country to have him go down to defeat again in a free and fair election. Keeping him on the ballot so voters could decide was the path to long-term institutional stability and might finally force a reckoning in the Republican Party.
Many people I respect continue to hold versions of this view. But the more I read and listened, the clearer it became that Section 3 was directed against precisely the conduct Trump engaged in. Its purpose is to protect the republic from those who would shred the Constitution and destroy our system of self-government. What Trump did in advance of the attack on the Capitol and on Jan. 6, 2021, legally disqualifies him from the presidency.
The record is clear that the legislators who wrote and enacted the amendment in the wake of the Civil War were not just thinking of the Confederacy’s leaders but also of “the leaders of any rebellion hereafter to come.”
Those are the words of John B. Henderson, a Republican senator from Missouri, when he cast his vote for the amendment in 1866. They are recorded in a powerful amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court by a distinguished group of historians of the era: Jill Lepore, David Blight, Drew Gilpin Faust and John Fabian Witt.

About “Major Organ and the Adding Machine” album

One of the zanier things that grew out of this period was Major Organ and the Adding Machine. The entity produced one self-titled album, though it’s not entirely clear who that self is. It was created with no intention to release the album to the public, though that happened long after it was finished. The album is also not the most highly regarded in the E6 catalog. It’s easily one of the weirdest, though, and given how it came together, it serves as a remarkable document of the time period and community, like some kind of Dadaist Polaroid. The stream of unselfconscious is evidence that even without commercial ambitions of any kind, folks were still doing their thing, trying to entertain themselves and one another.
The project began a cover of “What a Wonderful World” that Julian, Jeff, and Jill Carnes recorded together for a Kindercore compilation of Christmas music released in 1997. The Louis Armstrong original is a song most people have heard so many times that it’s basically white noise, but the Elephant 6 rendition has its own feel. Of the trio’s contributions to the song, Jill’s vocal melody hews closest to the familiar, but her creaky timbre weaves in and out of Julian’s ethereal saw like a frog clambering through a thicket of swaying cattails. Jeff’s verse in the middle is modulated just to the point of peculiarity, and a haunting tape loop from his homemade sound effects library undergirds the entirety of the two-minute track.
Julian submitted the track under the name Major Organ and the Adding Machine and then lent the name to the project that emerged next, a bunch of songs that came together via an exquisite corpse–style sharing of tape. No one seems able to recall the exact origins, but it basically came about like this: one person would compose the beginnings of a song and put it to tape—maybe a fractured, looping guitar riff or a surreal lyric—and pass it off to someone else, who would then add sound effects or some percussive toy piano and pass it to someone else, who might add a bass line or instead decide to cut the whole thing up and rearrange it. Each person would add bits and pieces and then pass it to the next person, until a song was ready to collapse under its own weight. The tapes were passed around for years, each song swelling into maximalist oblivion as much from divination as from intentional composition, without anyone guiding the process or even keeping track of it. Eventually, there was an album’s worth of material.

Griffin Rodriguez: When we did the recordings for Major Organ, it was just like any other day. “We’re going over to Julian’s to do some recording. Julian has a track for you to play on. Bring your bass.” It was always very impromptu and in the same spirit as all the other records. They would just invite you over and you’d play an overdub.
John Fernandes: Everyone kind of inspired each other. On the Major Organ project, everyone would kind of bring in things, and someone would say, “Hey, I’ve got a bass line for that.” We’ve never really talked about it. I’m not even sure if we’re supposed to be talking about how “we” did it.
Kevin Barnes: In the best way, it was a collaborative project. Everybody seemed to be contributing equally and making everything better. It was never getting worse because somebody laid some stupid tracks on it. It was like, “Whoa, this song is so much cooler now, and it was already cool.” I wrote that song “Madam Truffle.” I don’t remember who got it, but they sped it up really fast, and there’s this extra cool stuff Eric added.
Julian Koster: But we weren’t doing it to put it out. That was the thing. It entertained us to no end. It made us all laugh when we listened to it. It was just so funny and weird and fun. We all loved the Boredoms and Faust and Stockhausen.

Most of the recording happened in 1998 or thereabouts, and the album was released to the public in 2001. The finished product is every bit as eclectic and bizarre as anything else in the Elephant 6 catalog, and even more opaque. [...] Absolutely nothing had to be distilled into something accessible, because no one expected it to have an audience that wasn’t in on the joke. No one expected it to have an audience at all, beyond the people who made it. If the spirit of their weekly potlucks could be transposed into a record, it would be Major Organ and the Adding Machine.

Genèse et développement
En janvier 2019, Tom Cruise annonce que les septième et huitième films de la franchise Mission impossible vont être tournés « back to back » (à la suite), toujours avec Christopher McQuarrie comme réalisateur et scénariste. Tom Cruise annonce dès lors que les films sortiront aux États-Unis le 23 juillet 2021 et le 5 août 20222,3.
Attribution des rôles
En février 2019, Rebecca Ferguson confirme sa participation au septième, après avoir été dans les deux précédents opus4. En septembre 2019, Christopher McQuarrie annonce sur son compte Instagram que Hayley Atwell a rejoint la distribution5. Le même mois, l'actrice française Pom Klementieff signe pour apparaitre dans ce film et sa suite6.
Simon Pegg confirme son retour en décembre 2019. Shea Whigham signe ensuite pour les septième et huitième films7,8.
En janvier 2020, Nicholas Hoult rejoint le projet. Il est ensuite annoncé que Henry Czerny va reprendre son rôle d'Eugene Kittridge, présent dans le premier film9,10. Vanessa Kirby annonce également son retour11.
En mai 2020, à la suite du report du tournage en raison de la pandémie de maladie à coronavirus, il est annoncé que Nicholas Hoult s'est désengagé du film, pris par d'autres projets. Il est remplacé par Esai Morales12.
Angela Bassett confirme son retour en décembre 2020, avant de se raviser quelque temps plus tard en raison des restrictions de voyages liées au Covid-1913,14.
Tournage
Le tournage devait débuter en février 2020 à Venise. L'équipe se rend ensuite à Rome15,16. Cependant, à la suite de la pandémie de coronavirus, le tournage en Italie est suspendu17. Il redémarre quelques semaines plus tard dans le Surrey, en Angleterre18,19. En juillet 2020, après un nouvel arrêt, l'équipe est autorisée à tourner au Royaume-Uni. Le tournage a lieu dans les Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden20. L'équipe est ensuite autorisé à tourner dans le comté de Møre et Romsdal en Norvège21. Plus tard, une impressionnante cascade à moto est tournée dans l'Oxfordshire. Elle a nécessité six semaines de préparation et est l'une des plus chères réalisées au Royaume-Uni22.
Les prises de vues reprennent en septembre 202023. En octobre 2020, de nouvelles prises de vues ont lieu en Norvège : Preikestolen, Stranda et Rauma24. Le 26 octobre 2020, la production est en Italie mais est stoppée car 12 personnes sont testées positives Covid-19.
En décembre 2020, lors du tournage à Londres, un enregistrement audio de Tom Cruise, s’énervant contre le non-respect des protocoles anti-Covid de certains membres de l'équipe, est dévoilé25. Fin décembre 2020, Variety annonce que le tournage principal devrait se terminer aux Longcross Studios26. En février 2021, après des prises de vues à Abou Dabi27, l'équipe retourne à Londres pour quelques retouches et reshoots. Il est par ailleurs annoncé que la production renonce à enchaîner avec le tournage du 8e film, comme cela était initialement prévu28.
En juin 2021, le tournage est à nouveau suspendu pour deux semaines en raison d'un membre testé positif au Covid-1929. Le tournage reprend son cours en août 2021[réf. nécessaire] et s'achève définitivement le 11 septembre 202130.

Sein blosser Oberkörper half ihr nicht gerade dabei, sich zu konzentrieren. Etwas schwerfällig löste sie ihren Blick von seiner muskulösen Bauchpartie und wanderte stattdessen in sein Gesicht. Das war keine wirkliche Verbesserung für ihre Konzentration. Als sie in seine schier endlosen, nachtschwarzen Augen blickte, fiel ihr wieder ein, dass sie das erste waren, in die sie sich vor einer gefühlten Ewigkeit verliebt hatte. Seine Augen. Und sein Lächeln. Und die Art und Weise, wie sich kleine Fältchen um seine Augen bildeten, wenn er lachte und seine tiefschwarzen Pupillen dazu schalkhaft glitzerten.
Das Papier in ihrer Rechten zerknüllte sich noch ein wenig mehr, als sie die Hand nervös zur Faust ballte. Es sah nicht so aus, als würden ihr die richtigen Worte noch in den Sinn kommen, also benutzte sie unbeholfen die, welche ihr halbleeres Gehirn noch produzieren konnte.
"Ich hab eine Liste geschrieben."
Innerlich applaudierte sie sich. Das war zumindest ein Anfang.
Er stand da und schaute sie aufmerksam an. Auf seinem Gesicht liessen sich keine grossen Gefühle feststellen, ganz anders als auf ihrem eigenen. Ranta wusste, dass sie ein offenes Buch für ihn war. Es war ihr immer schwer gefallen, ihre Gefühle zu verbergen. Eine Weile hatte sie es versucht, weil ihr gesagt wurde, dass ein guter Shinobi nie Preis gab, wie er sich fühlte, aber sie hatte das nie gut gekonnt. Dann hatte sie damit aufgehört und mit ihrer ehrlichen, emotionalen Art war sie anders als andere. Und das erfolgreich, schliesslich war sie doch noch Jonin geworden, all den Voraussagen ihrer Lehrer zum Trotz. An Tagen wie heute allerdings, verfluchte sie ihre Unfähigkeit ruhig zu bleiben.
"Auf der Liste stehen Dinge, für die ich mich entschuldigen möchte. Es ist ziemlich viel dabei zusammengekommen." Den letzten Satz nuschelte sie peinlich berührt.
Er sagte immer noch nichts, hob aber kritisch eine Augenbraue. Immerhin hörte er ihr immer noch zu.
Sie faltete das zerknitterte Papier auseinander.
"Ich möchte mich dafür entschuldigen, dass ich dir eine reingehauen hab." Ihre erste Begegnung. Er hatte sie erschreckt, unabsichtlich natürlich und ihre Ninja Instinkte waren mit ihr durchgegangen. Sie hatte ihm die Nase gebrochen und sich nie dafür entschuldigt. An dem Tag war sie mehr damit beschäftigt gewesen, mit ihm zu schimpfen. Sein Mundwinkel zuckte belustigt, vermutlich dachte er auch geraden an diesen Tag zurück.
"Es tut mir leid, dass ich mein Versprechen, dich anzurufen, nie eingehalten habe."
"Es tut mir leid, dass ich deine Verabredung mit Jill sabotiert hab." "Einen Moment, du hast was?" fragte er überrascht. "Ich hab Jill vertrieben. Frag bitte nicht nach den Details." Er machte ein Gesicht als schwanke er zwischen Lachen und Ausflippen. Ranta entschied sich rasch weiterzureden. "Ich finde zwar immer noch, dass sie eine blöde, eingebildete Kuh ist, aber ich hatte kein Recht mich so in deine Angelegenheiten einzumischen."
Ein tiefer Seufzer entwich ihr. Sich zu entschuldigen war anstrengend. "Ich hab deinen Lollipop-Vorrat durchstöbert und alle mit Apfelgeschmack mitgehen lassen. Ich bin verrückt nach den Dingern, es war unmöglich zu widerstehen. Tut mir leid." "Na das erklärt Einiges." murmelte er schmunzelnd.
Was sie bis jetzt zu ihm gesagt hatte mochte in den Ohren eines Anderen wie Bagatellen tönen und vermutlich war es das auch für ihn, aber ihr war es ernst. Ich Vater pflegte zu sagen, dass selbst ein kleiner Kiesel eine Gerölllawine in Gang bringen konnte. Er hatte sie immer ermahnt, auch den kleinen Dingen ihre Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken und da sie das zuvor versäumt hatte, musste sie es nun tun. Und wenn das bedeutete, dass sie sich für vier geklaute Lollies entschuldigte, dann war das eben so.
Aber jetzt war ihre Liste zu Ende. Es gab nur noch einen Fehler der ihr auf dem Herzen lag und der bedrückte sie so sehr, dass sie ihn nicht auf Papier bringen musste. Es war ihr erster Gedanke am Morgen und ihr letzter am Abend. Unfähig ihm in die Augen zu schauen starrte sie auf das Blatt Papier in ihren Händen.
"Es tut mir leid, dass ich ohne ein Wort gegangen bin."
Auch ohne hin zu schauen wusste sie, dass das Lächeln aus seinem Gesicht verschwunden war.
Sie war sich sicher, dass sie bei jedem weiteren Wort ihre Würde verlieren und vor ihm auf die Knie fallen würde. Dazu war sie noch nicht bereit, sie hatte Kumo schliesslich nicht ohne Grund völlig überstürtzt verlassen. Weil sie ihn nicht um Vergebung anbetteln wollte, schwieg sie und er schwieg und es war das furchtbarste Schweigen das sie je erlebt hatte.
"Ich bin dran."
Er kam langsam auf sie zu und zählte auf: "Es tut mir leid, dass ich dich erschreckt habe, das war nicht meine Absicht." Einen Moment hielt er inne und runzelte die Stirn, bevor er weiterfuhr: "Ich werde mich nicht dafür entschuldigen, dass ich eine Verabredung mit Jill hatte, ich seh aber ein, dass du mir einen Gefallen getan hast. Sie ist wirklich eine eingebildete, dumme Kuh."
Mittlerweile stand er vor ihr, seine Hand lag auf ihrer Wange. Statt weiterhin auf den Zettel zu starren, schaute sie ihm in die Augen. Seine Nähe brachte ihr Herz hektisch zum Klopfen. Sein Geruch stieg ihr in die Nase und vernebelte ihr die Sinne. Und diese Augen, die sie so ehrlich anschauten.
"Es tut mir so leid, dass ich dich mit meinem Verhalten aus Kumo vertrieben habe. Aber noch sehr viel mehr tut es mir leid, dass ich dir nicht hinterher bin."
Sie brauchte eine Weile, um zu verarbeiten, was er gesagt hatte.
"Du bist so sehr viel mutiger als ich. Du sprichst aus was du fühlst und fürchtest dich nicht sosehr davor wie ich."
Ranta schüttelte den Kopf. "Das ist nicht wahr, ich habe panische Angst davor. Zu Schweigen wäre aber sehr viel schlimmer."
