Catching Up
Thalia: So what happened after Juno took you? Where did you go? Were you safe, happy?
Jason, uncomfortably brushing her off: Well, it’s a long story and kind of a bummer haha. You don’t wanna hear that right now.
Thalia, softly: Jason, I’ve waited thirteen years to hear your sad stories.

Okay but Noah Kahan's 'She calls me back' is so Jason and Piper coded. (HOO and TOA spoilers ahead!!)
Because like, firstly the whole theme about unrequited love. Because Jason still loved her after the break up, he felt empty after it. And he died for her too.
And so much of Jason's character revolved around death and sacrifice. Most of his life (before HOO) he grew up thinking all he was there for was to die, almost like the goal of his life was to die like a hero, in combat.
And him (during HOO) getting a girlfriend, him finding close friends, it feels like around that time, there was more to living than just the glorified idea of dying as a hero.
'I do not exist to die'
Although most of HOO is about them being the seven from the prophecy, of being the ones that would stop Gaea and all that, it's also about them bonding. Becoming a good team. And for Jason, a lot of it is new: he didn't exactly have friends before (except maybe Reyna?). And he's falling in love too (and I will fight anyone who says it's fake, because even if those memories were planted into their minds by Hera- still doesn't change the fact that they ended up liking eachother. They started to create their own memories- that was the point of their arc, to find out what they feel for eachother on their own and separate it from the memories Hera created)
So he starts finding new purpose- separating himself from who he was forced to be as Preator. He has more to live for now.
'I do not exist to die, but live to die while saving you'
And it just hits so hard when this line comes up because like, the Roman's literally trained him that all his life was worth was in the cohorts- what he could give to camp Jupiter. It was never a two way relation, like the Greeks, like when percy got lost, they sent out search parties- Jason got none of that, even with all he did for camp Jupiter, because they couldn't waste resources on just one guy or whatever.
So when he dies for Piper, it's like- it's worth it to him. Like, to him, this is the healthiest relationship he has had, it gives him more to live for- and by extension more to die for.
And then, Kacey Musgraves verse resonates so perfectly with Piper's Character too, because in it's essence its about the 'unrequited love' theme. She doesn't love him anymore, at least not romantically.
and then the ending with, 'all the pain I should have saved, oh I was too afraid of living life in your footsteps,' feels like it fits so perfectly with the whole thing where Piper says, "That we'd be together forever like Percy and Annabeth?"
(I feel like this is more concerned with the Fandom culture of hating Jason and Piper together just cause it's threatening to be like Percabeth, the fan fave. Rick Riordan eventually gives the audience what they want. But if you ignore Fandom culture and all of that, I think the love they shared held so much value. They had such a unique start, different problems: it was so interesting to read about how they navigate their problems. It's just the constant comparison to Percabeth: both in the book with the characters; and out of the book with Fandom culture. They were too afraid of being confined to the thought of being like Percabeth, that what they did build up was never given value. -but that's a discussion for another time-)
Anyway, I wanna hug Jason so bad rn, I can’t read this anymore and I feel like I can’t listen to this fantastic song anymore cause all I think of is Jason and how he deserved the world but got literally nothing.
I wanna write an essay about him :( and hug him.

Thinking about how ‘Forever Winter’ by Taylor Swift screams Jason Grace around others.
Specifically Jiper during their time on the Argo ii.
“He spends most of his flights getting pulled down by gravity”
After Percabeth fall into Tartarus, Piper mentions in her POV how Jason starts looking worse than before.
Jason once again had to become a leader, which he’s okay with doing for the hell of it but obviously doesn’t want to since he doesn’t find himself good at it.
“All this time I didn’t know you were breaking down”
Piper sees Jason pushing himself beyond his own limit and doesn’t know what to do. But she cares. She cares so much.
Dating or not. Romantic or platonic.
“Too young to know it gets better”
She realizes that Jason has no faith in himself and actually doesn’t care at all whether he lives or dies. It breaks her heart.
Jason’s been a soldier his whole life, it’s always been life or death, never it only hurts now but it gets better soon.
“He seems fine most of the time, forcing smiles and neverminds”
Jason has his guard up all the goddamn time. Piper knows she hasn’t seen Jason to his full self. She’s pretty sure only his Camp Jupiter friends have. He doesn’t jump the gun and he doesn’t defend himself.
She doesn’t know how he can stand there, shoulders straining and eyes blurry, and just listen.
“Long gone, not even listening”
Jason works like a machine. He always has and Piper’s 90% sure he always will. Leo’s not around. He’s dead. So to say. And persistent as the son of Jupiter is keeps looking until he gets an answer.
A final cutoff.
“He says, “Why fall in love, just so you can watch it go away?””
Piper breaks up with him for herself, not because of him. Although Jason doesn’t fully agree.
He’s actually thrilled that Piper wants to learn about herself. It’s not easy. He stopped doing that.
Jason knew she would overthink when it came to him and he hated it. He wanted to end things because of it. Except he was too selfish to do it since that’d cut them off completely.
Whether he did it before she did it was still his final cutoff.
“My voice comes out screamin’”
Jason’s dead. Piper doesn’t know what to do. He took the quest as his distraction.
A distraction from his loneliness

“stop calling jason todd a silly guy” has it ever occurred to you that he is a silly guy? he is FOR SURE a murderer and can be so, so cruel, but he still has his moments. he can still be killing people while quoting books he read in high school. he can still be torturing people while humming mitski songs. he can still haunt gotham while making fun of his siblings. let the guy be silly!

It Is Us - Leo Valdez x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
summary: in which y/n comforts leo after percy insulted him
warnings: slight cursing, tension between characters
genre: (basically) fluff
word count: 1k
……………………….............
the argo ll was an interesting place. one minute, i was next to the son of poseidon who could summon tsunamis at his will, and the next, i was with a handyman who seemed like he was high on sugar and always had cheesy jokes ready.
and was it weird i preferred the second?
leo was undeniably my favorite on the argo ll. the ship felt empty without him, the dinner table felt tense when he wasn’t there, and the control deck seemed stupid when he wasn’t the one pressing the buttons.
we talked a lot, early mornings on the deck, late nights fixing machinery, or even afternoons of just sitting in the control room. we talked about everything. i got to know leo, and know who he really is, when he’s not covering up his pain with humor all the time.
what i loved the most about leo was his personality. the ship was full of serious people, annabeth, jason, frank. then it was full of people who didn’t want to make the serious people mad, hazel, percy, and piper. i love all of the people aboard, i just like one a little more.
……………………….
we were all sitting in the common area, discussing things about the prophecy, monsters, and life as we know it. it was a few of the quiet moments we got on the ship, to just talk. leo was cracking his jokes at every possible minute, which was impressive, considering how he had a remark for just about anything and everything.
i sat on one of the couches, with hazel and frank to my right. on the other couch sat jason and piper, and on the bench were annabeth and percy. leo sat on the arm of a sitting chair. coach hedge was screaming over baseball.
the conversation went on to annabeth, and how impressive her strategic thinking was, and how it was unfair that she got underestimated a lot.
“i just have to be more serious because i’m a blonde, and no one likes to take us seriously.” she explained.
i understood where she was coming from, for a smart woman like annabeth, being stereotyped as a dumb blonde consistently probably rubbed her the wrong way after a while.
“you and jason can team up and take over the camps, like the ‘rage of the blondes’ or something like that. at least one of you’d be taken seriously.” leo laughed, practically turning red as the joked left his mouth.
jason, hazel, frank, and i all chuckled before realizing that percy was staring leo down.
“i think they’d take annabeth more seriously, she’s ten times scarier than me.” jason joked, trying to diffuse the tension that had just taken place in the room.
“leo, i know you think your jokes are funny, but sometimes they’re really not.” percy said, anger clearly tainting his voice.
“I feel ya. my bad, annabeth, i was just messing around, i didn’t mean it like that.” leo said, nonchalantly.
annabeth simply nodded and went back to working on her laptop.
“can she get a proper apology?” percy continued.
“percy, man, it was just a joke.” leo defended, having already apologized in his own way.
“it’s sad leo, how you have to use your personality to make up for everything you don’t have.” he spat back.
i turned to see leo’s eyes fill with hurt. that wasn’t fair of percy, that really wasn’t. leo and i had talked multiple times, and he had brought up how he felt inferior to the other guys. it wasn’t alright for percy to say that.
“i’m sorry annabeth.” leo said calmly, before getting up, and leaving.
the room sat with silence for a moment. i got how leo’s joke came off the wrong way, but he apologized. what was percy’s need to go and villainize him even further.
“what’s even more sad, percy, is how you have to exploit someone else’s insecurities just to appear chivalrous. grow up.” i said angrily, before getting up to follow leo.
i didn’t really care what string of curses he wanted to shoot at me afterwards. right now, i needed to make sure leo was alright.
………………………………………….
i entered leo’s room after knocking, and found him in his bed, tears streaming down his face.
“is it true what he said y/n? does everyone feel like i use my personality to make up for what i don’t have?” he asked.
i sat down next to him.
“he doesn’t mean that, percy was just being an asshole because he thought you hurt annabeth.” i comforted.
“but he’s right, isn’t he? him, jason, and frank, are all huge, scary, powerful, guys. they’re not making up for anything.” he continued.
“he isn’t right, leo. you aren’t any less of a person because your daddy doesn’t control the sky or the sea.” i said, putting my hand on his back.
“i killed my own mom. i am less. i am the seventh wheel. i am the useless one.” he said, draining out thoughts i knew had bothered him for far too long.
“you didn’t kill your mom, it was gaea. and you are not useless and you are not less than anyone else on here. we wouldn’t even be on here if it wasn’t for you! you’re obsessing over the things everyone else has done without realizing they wouldn’t have been able to do any of that without you. you might be a lot of things leo, crazy, funny, kind, but you are not useless, and you are not incompetent.” i explained, emotion flooding my voice.
i saw him wipe away his tears, and a smile appear on his face.
“but i’ll always be the seventh wheel.” he said. “everyone’s got someone, except for me. the only person i like on the ship probably doesn't even like me back. and i can't blame her. it’s leo and his machines or it’s leo and y/n-” he cut himself off abruptly.
he cleared his throat.
“forget that last part.” he said.
“why? it is us, and i wouldn’t have it any other way.” i smiled.
leo smiled back, and we stared into each other’s eyes for a moment. then he leaned in, and i felt my lips make contact with his. i kissed him back, but he pulled out.
“i’m sorry, i shouldn’t have-” he started.
“yeah, you shouldn’t have pulled away so soon.” i smiled, pulling him by his shirt back in for another kiss.

TW Abuse/abusive relationships
Does anyone think the Gods ever ended up in like toxic/abusive relationships?
Like obviously they’re gods and the mythology often presents them as the perpetrators. In fact the entire Percy Jackson series wouldn’t have happened had they not been exploiting and abusing their own children.
But also Gods are like immortal and they get into loads of different relationships with loads of different people.
Abusers are often victims themselves and although that doesn’t excuse their actions it does provide an explanation as to why they act a certain way since they have skewed perceptions of the world and the Gods are most definitely victims of, at the bare minimum parental abuse (and that’s on top of all the generational trauma)
But I was reading ToA and for some reason it didn’t really click for me that when Apollo admits Zeus is abusive it was like a whole revelation for him, I just assumed the Gods all knew he was a tyrant and a shit dad but clearly they don’t.
And knowing Zeus I doubt Apollo was his only victim, but if he didn’t notice his father was an abusive dick whose to say the others noticed and if they didn’t notice their own father was piece of shit then whose to say they’d notice when their partner is abusing them?
Also the fact that so many demigods have abusive parents?
I would say Percy but it was Gabe who did all that shit Sally was an amazing mom.
But still people like Annabeth or Hazel.
Jason and Thalia especially.
Maybe some of their parents changed as people because of outside relationships or maybe it was parenting itself that caused them to spiral and they eventually became worse and worse as parents despite having been amazing partners like Annabeths dad.
But still most people don’t just flip a switch and become abusive one day, people don’t change that quickly and from the time they get into a relationship to the time they have a kid which is like a couple months (if you ignore that Gods can just have kids whenever) their isn’t really enough time to suddenly pick up abusive tendencies. Most of them were probably like that for a long time before they had kids and if they’re able to treat their own offspring so badly then I wonder how they must have treated their partners.
This honestly started as an offhanded thought but now I’m genuinely curious if anyone wants to share their thoughts.
I’m just kinda wondering if Apollo and Artemis ever had a conversation about relationships and Apollo was just like.
“Yea he’d get super pissed and start yelling and throwing stuff at me, it was kinda scary sometimes”
And Artemis just looks at him like “You know that’s domestic violence right?”
And if they did get into abusive relationships I wonder how it would effect them since they aren’t exactly human. I doubt they’d be afraid since no matter what the abuser did they’d always hold a position of power over them simply because they are Gods. But emotional abuse and gaslighting is a thing and I personally believe that due to their experiences with their own parents most of the gods would be extremely vulnerable to this sort of abuse.
And on top of that most of them would have way to much pride to ever admit they were being abused in a relationship.
I really don’t know where this thought came from but I want to know if anyone shared the same opinion.

What if... Leo Became a God?
Okay, but what if Leo literally burnt away his mortality during Blood of Olympus while fighting Gaea?
Now, before you go ahead and bring out the sledgehammers and pitchforks, or think I'm just doing it as a joke, this is a possibility that I'm being very sincere in considering this. And it is a possibility, because this isn't the first time this has happened in myth - Heracles did it first. So if burning himself alive in a freaking pyre was all Heracles needed to ascend to godhood, Leo literally burning himself alive using his own flames to kill a Primordial should be more than enough. Plus there's the whole Hera mimicking what Demeter did with Demophon, so we could say he's nearly there. Him burning himself alive is just that final push he needed to become a god, burning away his own mortality.
I mean, think about it. The prophecy always said, an oath to hold with a final breath, but it never meant Leo had to get close to perma-dead. Riordan did it just fine with the Physician's Cure, having Leo achieve apotheosis to do so would also be a way to circumvent the loophole in the prophecy. The phrasing is vague in that 'final breath' could be interpreted in multiple ways, such as 'one's final breath as a mortal.'
Oh the irony. We all thought Leo was going to die, then bam! Boy ends up with a permanent lease on life by literally burning himself alive, a lot more power than he could ever imagine getting, and a lot of freedom he never had as a mortal. He's lucky demigod #3 to ascend to godhood without divine patronage, right after Heracles and Dionysus. When he returns to Camp Half-Blood, it isn't on Festus, but him straight-up materializing in the middle of his funeral. Nearly every Greek and Roman but especially Nico mentally screams WTF as they realize that the funeral hasn't even ended, and Leo's shroud is basically his first offering.
His friends reactions to seeing him - and realizing the truth of what he has become. Jason and Piper are in shock, realizing that their friend is now going to stay young and will eventually watch them die and have to move on. Frank and Hazel are bewildered, because Leo's plan to burn himself alive to defeat Gaea had gone horribly right and now they have to deal with the fact that they had a hand in Leo's apotheosis. Percy and Annabeth are bewildered and shocked at the fact that Leo just straight up became a god - and the now very real reality that one of them may eventually do so (cough cough Percy).
When Leo goes to free Calypso, she literally has to process the fact that the boy she may have liked is now a god - the very beings she despises for imprisoning her in Ogygia. That eventually Leo may most likely move on to someone else and dump her. This crashes especially hard when she gets out of that island and realizes that she's become mortal. The dynamics between them have completely changed and Leo isn't aware of it, and Calypso doesn't know how to process that.
Hera is the one to explain exactly is going on to Leo, because she knows she had a hand in Leo becoming a god. She owes him at the very least to guide Leo in his new reality, and both the positive and negative benefits that are associated with ascension to godhood. Hephaestus doesn't know how to handle Leo now basically being just there forever, because none of his children ever became gods unless they were the children of him and a god. Nemesis marvels at the irony of Leo becoming a god while stealing Gaea's life, noting that this was a rather marvelous way that Leo rained his vengeance upon her. Apollo's just friendly because now he has a new friend to be with him in Olympus.
But this ending - for Heroes of Olympus as a whole - would be more poetic and a parallel to The Last Olympian. Percy was satisfied with who he was, protecting the world to save those he loves and he's happy with that. Leo is one who ascends to the heavens in his feat to avenge those he loves and destroying those who tried to destroy him.
But... there's one thing they have in common.
Leo's first act as a god isn't to rescue Calypso. It isn't to appear before the Seven and let them know he's alive. Leo appears in the Underworld and requests for only a single soul to be allowed a second chance at life. The single soul that he loves the most.
Esperanza Valdez is brought out of the underworld, and Leo freezes. The boy on fire who became a god turns back into a boy of eight years old as he finally gets back the mom he lost so long ago as he hugs her as best as he can. He hadn't expected to be a god. He didn't know what would happen next. But this - this is one of the few times things actually feel right. They've both been given a new lease on life - one longer than the other, but they can finally keep moving forward.

i'm just thinking about jason and his diorama
this poor boy was sixteen, finally had a chance to lead an almost normal teenage life, and yet he devoted so much time to redesigning temple hill in camp jupiter. he created designs. he used monopoly houses to mark positions because he had to use available resources, or should i say, because he wanted to finish his project as soon as possible.
he promised that he'll make sure that no gods or goddesses are forgotten, and he did everything in his power to achieve this. he started working on this as soon as he could. he barely knows who he is, except for this perfect, roman soldier, shaped since he was abandoned by his mother at the age of 2 years old, and yet, instead of using this precious time to search within himself, he focused on that temple hill.
jason doesn't have a selfish bone in his body, and he could have done so much more if he only had time. but this selflessness is exactly why he couldn't completely fulfil his promise to kymopoleia himself.
i hate rick riordan and his writing for many reasons. making jason grace such an underdeveloped character and then killing him, for what? for a little bit of tragedy? for apollo's character development?, is one of the things that infuriates me the most.

Jason Grace is unable to believed he is loved (even though many people do) because all of his life that’s what he’s been told.
‘You need to be needed to even attempt to earn love, Grace.’
Jason always tried to do everything exactly right. Tried to excel expectations. To be the best. Then everyone would need him—would want him around.
Everyone wanted the best.
Except that’s all Jason knows. If he’s not needed then he has no place anywhere.
Jason doesn’t know how to be himself. Because everything he’s been told to be was everything that wasn’t truly him.
If Jason isn’t good at being a demigod then he doesn’t feel good about himself.
If he isn’t sharp, physically and mentally, he’s weak. There’s no room for the weak.
Jason needs to be good and intimidating and an ass to good people like, Percy or Nico because then they won’t try to figure him out.
It also means he’s needed to the gods. The gods like tough kids who can hold their own. Kids who won’t crumble. His father likes that. He demands it.
And there’s always the sliver of hope that if his dad needs him maybe-just maybe- he’ll care about him.
That’s all Jason wants. A family.
People—or just somebody, one fucking person who loves him.
Maybe someone who’ll say, I got you. Lean on me.

Maybe for the first time since he and Biance were brought out of the Lotus and back into the real world, when she’d cupped his face between her hands and promised, “Now we’ll have a real life, you and I.”
He wonders, as he often does, what she would think if she could see him now.
-
or,
Starting after Nico's three-day-stay in the infirmary, the repercussions of being alone and fighting in two wars—across the span of only four years, might he add—begin to manifest. Featuring the formation of new friendships, reconciliation with old ones, self-reinvention, and the revolutionary concept that it's okay to just be a kid and need people sometimes.
