content: leo valdez x daughter of jupiter! grace! reader warning: very close to smut, NSFW probs just to be safe, many many sexual references and more, language obvi author's note: i wrote this the second i saw it. i was supposed to log off for the day but then i saw this and stared foaming at the mouth. i was supposed to do my spanish hw but here we are an hour later. it was just too good i'm sorry i'm a menace and cannot be stopped. ALSO YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED THIS IS VERY SMUTTY IF YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED DO NOT READ THX BYE BABES.
here are the three times jason grace caught his best friend doing things with his twin sister...and the one time he didn't catch them.
i. the engine room incident
"have you seen leo? i need him to fix the heating in my room," percy asked jason as he came into the living room of the argo ii. jason shook his head but got up from the couch.
"you know him, he's probably in the engine room working on something. i'll find him and send him your way, yeah?" jason offered and percy called his thanks as he walked away. jason hummed as he walked to the engine room, trying to remember the last time he saw his sister too. he shrugged, figured those two things were unrelated as he hoped he scared them off each at least for a little while. he loved both of them but he was certain they were just in their honeymoon phase, eager to keep their hands on each other.
"hey, leo, percy was-" jason started, pushing open the door to the engine room but the words died on his lips as he looked up. his jaw dropped at the sight of his sister pinned up against a wall, her shirt long gone and her hair frazzled in every direction. leo stood between her legs, his shirt half hanging off him with all of the buttons undone.
"jase!" his sister squealed, rapidly pulling her hands from leo's hair to cover herself. leo looked over his shoulder, turning his body and allowing jason to see that his pant's were unbuttoned too and on their way of coming off.
"get out!" leo shouted, panic flaring in his eyes which was more than enough for jason to be slamming the door shut. all three of them stood still on their respective sides of the door before jason heard shifting from inside.
"you better be getting dressed in there, y/n!! don't make me call thalia!" he shouted through the door, banging his fists a few times for emphasis.
y/n came out of the engine in leo's shirt, a grumble under her breath as she walked up the stairs and to her room. leo came out of the engine room next, no shirt and a glare at jason.
"dude, you're supposed to be my wing man."
"not when it comes to my sister!" jason argued, smacking leo upside the head.
"hey! not cool!"
"you wanna know what's not cool?! walking in on you trying to fuc-"
"there you are ! leo, i need you to fix my heater in my room- where's your shirt?" percy asked, walking down the stairs but then halting at the state of the son of hephaestus. leo smirked, looking over at jason.
"ask his sister."
"YOURE DONE!"
ii. the bathroom incident
they were all just hanging out on the argo ii, an intense game of uno being played. y/n excused herself to the bathroom at some point, yelling at percy not to look at her cards. (he totally did and then he divised a plan with annabeth to get twenty cards in her hand) after a while, leo tapped out, rolling his eyes as his turn got skipped again. he huffed something about needing snacks before scrambling out of the room. jason eyed leo suspiciously and waited a few minutes before following.
he walked to the kitchen, finding a lack of leo there. he then spun, feeling in his bones that he knew where the two scampered off to. he walked towards the bathroom, squinting with effort as he leaned his head against the door.
"leo, we can't, i've already been gone for so long and-"
"c'mon, pretty girl, live a little."
"i live plenty, thank you," y/n laughed and the distinct sound of kissing followed.
"i have to get back-" y/n tried to argue again
"in a minute," leo murmured, "just lemme...in between your pretty thighs...just...like...this-"
"hey, y/n! you done yet? it's your turn!" jason barked, knocking his fist against the door. there was some panicked shuffling that left jason smirking as the door opened, revealing his sister, desperately trying to fix her hair. jason and her stared at each other for a moment before jason turned towards the bathroom, y/n catching his wrist.
"where are you going?" she asked, her voice pitchy and panicked. jason's smirk just widened.
"the bathroom. why? something wrong?" he prompted and she let go, shaking her head.
"no- no of course not!" she replied with a tight smile before turning and walking away.
jason hummed as he closed the door, locking it and turning towards the shower that was in there, the curtain uncharacteristically pulled closed. he turned the sink on, washing his hands and looking at himself in the mirror.
"are ya in the shower, leo?" he prompted and there was nothing for a few seconds before he heard muffled shuffling and a distant, "shit."
jason crouched under the sink and pulled the cabinet open, revealing a curled up leo, who was desperately trying to take the screws off a vent out. jason raised a brow at him and leo offered him a bright smile.
"i feel the need to remind you i'm your best friend."
"not right. right now, you're some douchebag sleazing it up with my sister."
"fair- fair point."
"i know. full of 'em."
"would it help if i apologized?"
"not really."
"okay, cool."
the remaining six in the living room heard a distant banging and then a loud yell from leo.
"OW! YOU ELECTROCUTED ME, YOU FUCKER!"
"he brings this on himself," y/n muttered into her hands with a shake of her head.
iii. the bunker insistent
that's it! jason was sick of walking into leo's spaces and seeing him going down on his sister. if somebody wanted something from leo, they could go find him themselves! scar their own eyes. if any one wanted to know leo's location, he'd just blow them off and tell them to find him themselves. unless, y/n was with him, in which case he'd happily help find leo. which was the situation right now, as jason could physically see y/n, sitting on the dock in the lake with annabeth. they were watching percy do some water trick and leo was no where in sight.
"hey, jase, could you give this to leo? i don't want to walk all the way out to the bunker," hazel asked, holding out a package that looked like it was from some mechanic website or something. jason confirmed with his own eyes that his sister was at lake before confirming with a nod of his head.
he took the box from the daughter of pluto and began his walk, easily making his way through the woods and finding the bunker. he didn't even waste time knocking, knowing the exact location of his sister and thinking he had nothing to worry about.
how dead wrong he was.
there leo was, his hand firmly wrapped around himself, followed by rapid jerking motions from his hand. he was leaned back against a work bench and sweat was dripping from him, but jason had a feeling it wasn't from manual labor. oh, and the most disgusting part? moans on top of moans of his sisters name.
jason slammed the box down on the ground, pulling his hands up to his eyes like a child.
"you're absolutely disgusting-"
"j- jason, get out-"
"i thought i was safe-"
"why are you even in here right no-"
"she was at the lake and i thought i wasn't gonna see anything-"
"get out!" leo repeated, nearly desperate and jason threw his hands in the air, his eyes tightly squeezed shut.
"i don't want to even be in here!" he yelled back, spinning around and fumbling for the door before leaving and slamming it shut behind himself.
iv. the cabin occasion
"wanna come hang out in my cabin?" y/n offered, leaning forwards and biting her lip in a way that made it hard for leo to resist.
"y/n, you know i want to, but jason-"
"is currently at camp jupiter. he's in another country, there's no way he barges in," y/n cut in, clearly having been planning this for a while. leo pretended to contemplate it but she was already dragging him towards cabin one.
"you drive a hard bargin, ms. grace," leo taunted, smirking down at her as he closed the door of the cabin behind himself and let the girl pull him towards her bed.
"i've been told i'm hard for men to resist," adds y/n, smirking and letting out a sultry breath as leo started to trail his lips along her shoulder.
"whoever told you that is a fucking liar," leo mused into her neck, sucking the skin there before continuing, "you're impossible to resist."
y/n couldn't stop the giggles from leaving her mouth, cupping leo's cheeks and pulling his lips to meet hers in a real kiss, this one taking a slower softer tempo than the previous ones.
"let's get this shirt off, yeah? it's touch what's mine and i don't like it," leo mused, pulling away from the girl and chuckling as her lips chased after his. without a word, y/n tugged her shirt off and flung it somewhere unimportant as leo got to work on all the newly exposed skin.
"leo, leo- leo, honey, did you lock the door?" y/n fought to get out in between her moans. leo didn't answer and just continued to suck at her exposed skin, his hands expertly reaching behind her to undo her bra.
"leo-"
snap! the bra was already unhooked, sagging away from her skin. naturally, that's when the door swung open, thalia walking in with a beaming smile.
"Where is my favorite sister-" thalia's cheer stopped as she stared at her younger sister in the lap of her boyfriend, her bra rapidly slipping off her front. both of the teens looked like deer in headlights, completely frozen.
"you're kidding me-" thalia huffed as y/n smacked leo's shoudler
"i told you to lock the door!"
"you also told me jason was out of town!"
"i have other siblings!"
"clearly!"
"HEY!" thalia shouted, gaining both of their attentions, "here's what were gonna do. i'm going to walk out and you're gonna pretend i was never here. sound good?"
"sounds great," leo smirked, earning him a shove from y/n.
"say thank you," she hissed to her boyfriend, who rolled his eyes.
"thank you, oh great thalia!" he called and thalia laughed as she walked out of the cabin.
"now," leo started, turning back to his girlfriend with a smirk, "where were we?"
finally, leo thought the next morning, y/n cuddled up to his chest, her hand resting right above his heart. he smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead and pulled the blanket up higher on her. this was all he wanted, just to wake up beside her. none of that sneaking around stuff, no more people (cough jason cough) barging in. just him and his pretty girl.
and then the door squeaked open, jolting y/n from her sleep and causing leo to look over at the door, jason basically fuming.
"I'VE HAD IT! THIS IS MY CABIN TOO!"

Bat Wives Wine Night
AZRIEL X READER
This is my first thing I’ve put out to public eyes...ever. So please be nice. I had this idea for awhile and this is mostly a teaser to what I truly want to write. I want to make this a full imagine with smut. If you like this idea and want to see a spicier version to how this night ends please let me know. I’m always open to criticism and always looking for advice so as long as we are nice about it let me know what you think. Im gonna start writing more stuff and will be open to requests. Thank you and I hope you like this little teaser.
PART 2:
WARNINGS: drugs and alch used responsibly, dirty thoughts by the bat boys
CONCEPT: The bat boys finally realize what their mates are up to on their top secret Wine Nights
“Oh my gods…you’re right” Feyre softly said.
Feyre, Nesta, and I were sitting at the River House sipping on wine and enjoying what we call Bat Wives Wine Night when I had the realization that our husbands have had 500 plus years of experience and fun while us wives are in our 20’s being depressed and stressed for majority of our lives. This was unacceptable and not fair at all. We deserve to let loose and live a little. Go drink til we throw up, smoke mirthroot and tobacco as we pleased. To just be stupid, reckless teens. A night where we didn’t have to be perfect, just ourselves. We all looked at each other with understanding that our simple little wine nights just became a lot more fun.
“Okay ladies, once a month like we do now we keep letting our mates think we have wine, eat cheese on a platter and gossip. But let’s just go crazy, do whatever we want because we feel like it. Because we can. We’re young, hot, and rich. Let’s just be stupid, not enough to be dangerous but enough to have some memories to laugh fondly at just like our darling husbands. We are Bat Wives, I say we give them a run for their money.” I declare loudly watching my High Lady’s eyes light up with mischief (just like her mate). Nesta’s feline grin gave me the approval I needed from her. Thank the Mother our mates were not here to hear us declare our secret fun.
“Our mates will find out though, eventually. Cass is nosey, drills me on what happens on our Wine Nights. Such a gossip…” Nesta whispers the last part.
“Plus your mate is the Spymaster…” Feyre concludes by taking a sip of her wine. Yes he is, my beautiful, sweet, loving mate. Azriel. We’ve been married and mated for over a year now. I met him at a time when I swore off love at the nice age of 19 years old. But he was so kind and patient, building up our friendship first and making me feel seen as a person. He is a wonderful male and he had to fight many battles to get where he is today. But I am not Azriel, I’ve barely traveled out of my own court. Our perspectives can be quite different which I love but I want to create my own experiences as well. After the war, after almost dying I realized life can be taken from me at any moment and I want to spend those moments knowing I made good memories. That I lived. Even if it’s once a month with my sister in laws doing something as silly as smoking mirthroot. It’s something to ease the soul, bonding between just us girls.
“So what? Let’s see how long we can go til they figure it out. Make it a game, see how far we can go before they find out just how unhinged we are.” I giggle just a bit tipsy. The girls and I burst out laughing and start planning what we should do next month.
*TWO YEARS LATER*
Two years and counting. Our darling husbands STILL think we have a quiet night in with some books and snacks. It’s truly comical. It’s also nice to know something they don’t.
“I’ll miss you.” Az murmurs in my hair, holding me til I walk into the River House front door. I tighten my arms around his waist and breathe him in. He takes a step back looking at me, love and adoration flowing through the bond between us. Az looks heart eyed, as if seeing me for the first time. I can’t tease him because I know for a fact I’m looking at him with the very same look.
“Can you guys just make out already so we can start drinking?” Nesta says unamused. I jumped back from Azriel, startled. When did she open the door? Nesta walks further away from us into a deeper part of the house. I turn back to find Az already looking at me. Something about Azriel is he is absolutely clingy in the best way possible. Physical touch and quality time are his love languages, any time we have to part it’s a bit dramatic because we simply hate saying goodbye. It’s the love I’ve always wanted. I love the Wine Nights as he has nights with his brothers to get away but nothings better than coming home and finding my place within his arms.
“If you ever wanna leave early just let me know and we can cuddle and I can go down on you.” Az’s cheeky grin showed proudly. I laugh while pushing him, he grabs my wrist playfully holding me to him. He brushes some hair from my cheek and presses his smooth lips to mine. We stand there for what feels like hours just feeling each other's breath mingle, when he glides his naughty tongue against my lips I pull away. Both us panting I say, “Go Az, before I actually ditch them for you.” I giggle. He very reluctantly peels his hands off my body and shoots up the sky with a wink, surely a promise of great fun when he picks me up tomorrow morning.
With the mating haze slowly leaving my brain a new found giddiness found its way in. We’ve started doing full on sleepovers instead of a few hours of mingling. That way we can return to the River House and clean up before our mates return to us. Truthfully it started after Feyre had way too many tequila shots and threw up for two hours begging us not to call for Rhys as our “cover” would be blown. I skip into the River House and take a look at my girls.
“Ready to fuck shit up?” I ask. “We’ve been ready, we were betting if you two would actually fuck on my front door.” Feyre says as fill her cups with wine, pregaming for later. Nesta laughs while grabbing my hand leading me into Feyre’s room. She has the biggest bathroom and closet for these occasions. We all start getting ready putting on our preferred style of makeup and clothing. Laughing loudly as we gossip about Beron’s hairline that keeps going further back as each year passes. We truly don’t know if it is but we all love roasting that horrible man. Once we are satisfied with our looks for the night we get ready to winnow to Veela, a club the IC doesn’t frequent too often. It’s newer and doesn’t have the huge crowd Rita’s does. It’s perfect, truly. We won’t run into anyone we know, not too crowded, but fun and rowdy. We pack the leftover mirthroot and tobacco from last month and winnow to the club saving us some time. We walk right in finding our usual table free in the corner.
“Let’s start with some shots ladies.” Nesta yells out heading to the bar, I’m a bit scared because Nesta’s choices in liquor are questionable at times. Feyre and I start people watching and laughing as we see the funny things the already drunk patrons are doing. I start rolling a blunt and a few j’s also a few cigarettes as I tend to want to smoke one after a good drink or two. Nesta comes back with the shots and our preferred mixed drinks in hand. We raise our glasses cheering for another successful Bat Wives Wine Night.
About an hour or so later we are tipsy, Nesta not so as she prefers to smoke mirthroot. Her struggles with drinking have lessened, she has a drink or two while she watches Feyre and I dance on tables. Nesta nursing a joint between her fingers swaying to the music she loved. Nesta says the plant helps her feel connected to it. Whatever, I don't care as long as we do what we want and feel safe doing it. I am a fan of both, I hop off the table and take the joint between my lips taking a long drag before exhaling into her mouth as we both giggle uncontrollably. Her red eyes meet mine, seeing Nesta relaxed and having fun is a privilege and I’m glad she feels safe enough to do so. We all love our mates but I think being with each other brings a new peace to our hearts. Sisters and friends, we are loved. For the first time in a long time we are loved. Her eyes widen, face slack as I laugh and turn I start coughing inhaling sharply as I see them.
Our husbands.
Our mates.
Staring.
I gently pull Feyre off the table where she was dancing with two other fae, gently pushing her head to make her see what we see. Feyre chokes on her breath.
“Shit…” Feyre mutters. Shit, indeed.
*BOYS POV*
Flying to the House of Wind, Azriel thought of his sweet mate. Years they’ve indulged their wives in their one night of secrecy. They deserved it, for being selfless and caring. Their mates have sacrificed a lot for them, for the Night Court. But they are busy bodies at heart, they can’t help but be curious. They love their wives, they just want to be included. Azriel lands on the balcony to see Cass and Rhys nursing a glass of whiskey. He walks in and pours himself a glass.
“Az, what do you think they do all night?” Cass says looking into his glass, pouting. Rhys looks unamused, Nesta probably told him off for being nosy. “Cass, they’re women. They drink their wine and dish about the new love interest in the books they read. Don’t think too hard you’ll hurt yourself.” Rhys chuckles as Cass throws a pillow at him. Rhys ducking slightly missing the pillow.
“I’m not but you know what I’m talking about. They smell like tequila and there’s traces of makeup and good perfume on them. Think about it, what do our mates truly get up to?” Cass says. Azriel sits and starts to think while Rhys and Cass get into it. Azriel the ever observant once couldn't have missed this right? He trusted his mate, knew she wouldn’t do anything stupid. Right?
Rhys stands after an hour or two of them not so obsessively tracking back to all the times they’ve had their Wine Nights. “Let’s go to the house now, we’ll say we forgot something. Catch them off guard.” He looks at the boys in confirmation. All their eyes light up in glee of possibly catching their mates doing something scandalous. But how they underestimate their wives is truly amusing. How they didn’t catch on after two years, even more so.
They set off for the River House when they landed there was silence. No giggling or tinking of wine glasses. Nothing. At first panic rushed in thinking someone hurt their mates but once they reached the master bedroom they saw clothes strung across the place, makeup and hair products messily sitting on the counter. The girls usual PJ’s on the floor. They went out.
Cass scoffs, “I knew it! I KNEW THEY WENT OUT WITHOUT US! HA RHYS, I TOLD YOU!” he booms loudly, happy to be right and Rhys to be wrong. Azriel immediately makes a plan to find them, sending his shadows out. Once he gathered they were in the city they set their sights there. They went to Rita’s, not a trace. They searched restaurants and pleasure halls, Azriel questioning the staff there. They learned not only did they go out tonight but have frequented these places multiple times, without them. They were smart, Az gave them that. The girls used cash wherever they went instead of billing them, going as far as to use fake names and backstories when they would stop by the herb shop to purchase mirthroot and tobacco. Something they did not know their mates indulged in. For a second they questioned their mates, if they truly knew them. Now they for sure were set to find out answers. Azriel’s shadow reported to him they were across the city in a new club.
The music was pounding, drunk and high fae dancing or sitting and laughing. Azriel first spotted his High Lady and mate dancing on a table top, Feyre pouring tequila down his mate’s throat. Azriel couldn't lie, the sight made his pants tighten, seeing the hard liquor pouring down his wife’s very low top trickling onto her breasts. Watching her throat bob up and down, very similar sight to when she has him in her mout- “WHAT THE FUCK!” Rhys exclaims though it sounds more like a whisper compared to the very raunchy music booming in the background. Az notes that though Feyre lets loose at Rita’s and has fun, Feyre looks unhinged. As if she wasn’t the High Lady of Night but a 20 something year old who was having fun. Azriel laughed as he watched with his brothers, they stayed in the corner out of the way but still in eye sight of their girls. He watched his mate get off the table and steal the joint Nesta was nursing, blowing it in her mouth. Cass watches just as intently, in fascination and horniness. “I didn’t know they did THIS on their wine nights, I didn’t even know Nes smoked at all.” Cass says. He’s starting to wonder just how nice it would be to get Nesta this relaxed then fuck her for hours under smoke induced love making. Rhys is no better, watching Feyre swing her hips against the strangers around her. Wanting so badly to take her in the bathroom. But first it’s business.
“Alright, brothers. They’ve had their fun now let’s crash.” Rhys said with a smirk. All together they marched towards their mates and stood waiting for them to realize. All had a mask of indifference though they really wanted to burst out laughing. One by one each girl’s head turned and paled.

Happy Accidents

[Todd Ingram x Female!Reader]
Synopsis: You might've broken your leg due to Todd, but that didn't mean you couldn't still have quality time together.
WC: 2672
Category: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff
This was such a random plot I came up with, but I’m actually in love with it. I feel that this little one-shot is 100% Todd accurate (I say little but it’s literally 2k words lol).
Also, please don’t send the vegan police after me for my inaccuracies (lmao). Google was my only option 😭😭
『••✎••』
Spending time at the hospital wasn’t the plan you had in mind for your Friday night. You expected it with you curled up on your couch watching whatever crappy reality show that was airing with Todd by your side.
He was always the perfect person to binge with; his reactions were an endless source of sarcastic commentary. It actually made it funnier.
But you couldn't be too upset. You still had Todd, and you had… some television. Sure, it wasn’t 90 Day Fiancé, but it was better than nothing.
Usually, when it came to broken legs, you were at the hospital for two hours. Two. Hours. Not you, of course. Your boyfriend had to be a vegan and have those whacked-out powers. It was a given that there’d be an accident.
Who knew a flying amp could be so hard to catch?
At least you didn't have a concussion. The only injury was your leg, but your leg was completely messed up. Three different fractures in your femur and a torn ligament. It was the most you had ever been injured in your life, including all those times you fell off your bike or when you broke your arm in third grade.
The doctors at the hospital said that they couldn't let you leave until Monday. Surgery was also still on the table and could happen as early as tomorrow, which you definitely weren’t paying for
So, you were stuck in the hospital, eating the terrible hospital food and watching stupid television.
And the worst part about all of this was that it was slowly taking your mind off of Todd.
It was only the last couple months when the two of you started dating. Neither of you were exactly serious or anything, but you had feelings.
He was a big guy and a real sweetheart, not to mention a badass with those powers of his. It was obvious that he had a good heart, and he didn't take shit from anybody. That included you.
You had to admit that it was cute when he got jealous. He never had to worry, though. You were never interested in guys like him. You had your eye on Todd, and now you were stuck in a hospital bed because of him.
Now that it was just a memory, the moment you broke your leg was pretty comical. Envy needed a rehearsal before their band went out on tour the following week, and since you and Todd planned the night out together, you attended their quick practice.
As usual, they were awesome. You were like a little fangirl when Envy started singing. You kept your cool, though, sitting on the couch while they ran tempo and entrances. You weren't paying too much attention either, until you heard a voice and turned your head.
Lynette, the drummer, apparently had a very salty day and decided to pick fights with Envy’s ideas. She even suggested that she should learn how to write songs. That was a big no-no when it came to Envy, and it was made very clear that it would be her last comment for the day.
It was a blur, really. Envy and Lynette were throwing insults at each other, and Todd was caught in the middle of it. He was pretty bad at confrontation when it didn’t technically involve him and so he usually let it slide, but something about Lynette had pissed him off this time.
You could still remember the words he said.
"You know what I hate about you? Your hair."
You giggled, and that was your mistake. Lynette absolutely loved her hair. That haircut was her pride and joy. Todd could never understand what it was about it, but it was Lynette's favorite feature.
So, when he insulted her favorite thing in the world, she immediately started attacking your boyfriend, causing you to go over and try to stop this before it escalated.
Well, it escalated. Todd subconsciously went into “vegan mode” when he was mad. It was a defense mechanism or something like that. In any case, an accidental movement of his hand had an expensive amplifier aimed right at your leg.
Envy saw it coming and screamed his name to get his attention, but he couldn’t hear her over Lynette, and you couldn't move out of the way fast enough.
And then, everything stopped. All you felt was the excruciating pain that was apparently your broken bone, multiple places, as you later found out. Your mind went blank for a moment as all the horrified expressions of each band member turned towards you.
Todd threw the amplifier aside with his powers, profusely apologizing to you. His hair settled back down to normal as he took you in his arms.
"Oh, god, am I an idiot." He said. "I didn't mean to… oh, man, you’re okay, right?"
You were on the verge of tears when you nodded your head. The adrenaline of the moment had taken over your pain as you wrapped your arms around his neck and squeezed him tight.
Envy most definitely cursed him out on your behalf. Lynette was still pissed as she stood off to the side, crossing her arms with a huff. She didn’t really know you, so she didn’t really care that you got hurt.
But Todd knew you, and he cared a whole hell of a lot about you. He was going to be making up to you for a while. You were going to get the apology of a lifetime and probably an entire chocolate cake with strawberries. You loved strawberries.
You did not care about your injury at that moment, though. The scene of Todd apologizing to you, Envy yelling derogatory words at him that were obviously unknown to him, and Lynette's head turning in the other direction was probably one of the best sights you had ever witnessed in your life.
“How’re you feeling?” Todd’s voice snapped you out of your memory. He was in the chair beside you with a hospital pillow on his lap. He had a bag of Doritos in his hand, which he was munching on.
You turned your head over to him and couldn't help but smile. It was a smile full of love and adoration, one that made Todd raise an eyebrow.
"I'm alright," you replied, reaching for the water that was by your bedside. You failed miserably, but Todd noticed it and hovered it over to your hands.
He took the opportunity to grab another chip and take a bite before looking back at you.
"You sure you're okay? I mean, you got hurt 'cause of me.”
"That's what I get for dating a badass, I guess." You laughed, shaking your head.
Todd scoffed, "That's not funny."
"It kinda is."
"Whatever." He crossed his arms and pouted a little bit. "I'll have to watch my back more now. I could have killed you."
“It’s okay. Envy would’ve reunited us if you had. She would’ve torn you a new one. I'd say you dodged a bullet there.”
As Todd munched on his Doritos, nodding along to your words, you knew there was nothing in his brain that connected what you’d just said. He was most definitely agreeing, just to agree.
And just because of that, you couldn't help but admire him. He was sitting there with his messy hair and those brown eyes of his. His clothes were wrinkled, and you could see the tiredness in his eyes, but none of it mattered to you because he was still so beautiful.
Todd being a vegan was also a blessing because it gave him such an amazing physique. He was lean but toned, his abs always visible even under his baggy shirts. Not that you cared if they were showing or not.
"Can I have a chip?” You asked him.
He turned towards you with a look of horror on his face. "You don’t like these. You like the non-vegan Doritos.”
“Aren’t they all… not vegan?”
Todd let out a sigh, his eyes rolling back.
"Not these. Spicy Sweet Chili. I got these from the vending machine. They're for me."
He sounded like a little child, which you couldn't help but laugh at. He always was so serious about these things, even though they were snacks that were meant to be shared with people.
"That's not what I asked." You said.
"Yeah, but-"
You made grabby hands at him. You were starting to feel that pain again as your muscles were getting tired. You needed those chips.
"Todd, please."
He let out a sigh, trying to hold back a smile. He was always such a big softie for you.
He handed over a bag of chips, and you wasted no time in taking one. Immediate regret as you took a bite out of the spicy snack, choking as you did so. You managed to swallow it down before taking in a drink of water to wash it all down.
"Told you that you wouldn't like them." He said with a grin.
"I… like them. I just don't like how I feel after I eat them."
"Mhmm.”
You glared at him, narrowing your eyes. "Stop being smug."
"I can't help it if I'm so cool." He winked.
He wasn't wrong, though. Todd had a very good self-esteem about himself and was never shy to tell you so. But it was the way he said it, that smug look of his and his stupid wink, that made you want to punch him and kiss him.
It was those little things.
"You know," you said as you crossed your arms, "this isn't how I planned on spending my Friday night."
"I know, babe. I know."
"I mean, I thought we were going to have some quality time. The two of us and the TV, I really wanted to catch up on that old Ed and Rose storyline.”
"I know, I know.”
"And instead, I'm here with and because of you." You glared at him as you finished your sentence.
He was ready for your attack, crossing his arms to match yours. You two were in the middle of a staring contest when Todd opened his mouth to say something, but the nurse came in at the worst possible moment to interrupt him.
"Ah, you're awake. How're you feeling?”
Unfortunately, this made Todd win the battle as you were forced to look at the nurse. She had a smile on her face, one that made you feel relaxed. Todd turned to look at her as well.
"I'm feeling better now." You said. "Thank you for asking."
The nurse nodded her head, writing down your words before turning to Todd with a smile. "Since your friend—”
“Girlfriend.” He corrected her, pointing a finger at you.
You couldn't help but laugh, turning your head to the side as you did so. Your laughter got the nurse to smile.
"I apologize. Since your girlfriend is doing better, you’re welcome to visit back in the morning. Visitation hours are from eight to twelve and one to three. After that, only family will be allowed in.”
Todd turned to look at you, and you could see that he wanted to say something, but with a simple nod from you, he leaned back in the chair with his arms crossed, giving the nurse his attention.
She gave him another smile as she looked back at you. "I’ll come back in about an hour for a checkup. Press the button if you need anything in the meantime."
"Thank you." You replied.
She left the room smiling, leaving the two of you to look at each other.
You let out a sigh as you leaned your head back on the bed, closing your eyes. Todd's eyes never left you, staring at you as you did so.
“Should've said we were married. I would've been able to stay the night here." He said.
"Yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to sleep because of your snoring. You know, that's why I get up so early in the mornings. I have no choice but to leave the bed when you're snoozing away."
Todd had the audacity to smile at that, shaking his head.
"Whatever, I don't snore. Besides, you love the way my arms feel around you."
You opened one eye, staring at him. "Are you trying to make me feel bad?"
"No. I'm just stating the facts. I have great arms if you hadn't noticed."
You scoffed at him and his bragging. You closed your eyes again.
"I hate you so much."
"I know." He said with a smirk on his face. “Can I have my chips back now? You ate almost all of them."
You handed the bag back to him without another word, sighing deeply. You could feel Todd's stare at you as he opened up the bag again.
You heard him take another chip into his mouth as he stared at you, but he was too quiet, so you knew he had something else to say.
"What?" You asked, already knowing the answer.
"You know that I meant it when I said sorry, right?"
"Of course I know, Todd. You always apologize."
He swallowed down his chips. "Yeah, but this time I really meant it. I was so scared when you got hurt. I didn’t mean to; I just got pissed at Lynette, and that all happened."
"Todd, it's okay. I know you didn't mean it. You would never hurt me."
"You're sure?" He asked.
You opened up your eyes again, looking at him. He was staring down at his lap as he said those words, biting his lip. You could tell that he was genuinely worried about this, so you reached over and made grabby hands again, but instead of the chips, you were looking for him.
Todd looked up at you and raised an eyebrow. He placed the bag of chips aside and got out of his chair, going over to the side of the bed to look at you. You placed both of your hands on either side of his neck, smiling at him.
"I'm positive. I know how much I mean to you, Todd. You don't need to worry. I'm not mad at you."
He was looking right into your eyes as you said that and nodded his head, moving closer toward you as he placed his hands on the side of the bed. You didn't want him to be too far away from you, so you wrapped your arms around his neck.
"I'm just glad you're okay. I didn't mean for this to happen. I swear."
"I know." You replied. "It's not your fault."
You stared at each other for a few more moments before he leaned down and kissed you. He placed both of his hands on either side of the bed as he deepened the kiss. He didn't do this often, but when he did, he knew exactly what he was doing.
He was also extremely careful now that you had broken your leg, making sure that he wasn't putting any pressure on your side. He placed one hand on your face to hold you in place as he kissed you while his other hand supported his body.
It felt like a few minutes had passed before he broke the kiss. He leaned down and rested his forehead against yours, closing his eyes.
"I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too."
It wasn't the first time he said it, and it definitely wasn't the first time you had said it to him, but it was the first time you heard those words without any fear in his voice. There was no worry, no hesitation, only love.
He opened his eyes, looking at you with a smile on his face. His brown eyes always captivated you, especially when he smiled.
You felt your own smile spread as you looked into those beautiful eyes of his, kissing him on the cheek before snuggling up to him.
You felt his hands wrap around your body and sighed contently. Eventually, he’d have to leave, but until then, you were going to enjoy this.
And if it came with spicy chips, then even better.

tell us about the royals au!!! (im on my knees. please.)
Ohhhhh my friend you have started me on a RANT I hope you’re ready!!!
I don’t know that I’ll ever actually write it so I’m not too worried about spoilers, and the wonderful people in my dms (which are still open btw) bouncing ideas with me are always going to come up with great ideas so I’m putting WIP in big red letters, things are subject to change! But for now, some ideas. Most of what I have will be under the cut, but if you want to know more about a specific part/have any questions please I’d love to chat :D will link to the art/posts I have so far!
(In this au I’ve been referring to Neil as Nathaniel at first and then Abram (hello names as a plot device), and everyone else right now is some version of their name)
Kevin and Nathaniel were raised at Evermore castle, Kevin to be in direct competition to Riko/see which of them might claim the throne (not thought out yet), and Nathaniel as the Moriyama’s attack dog, born and raised to take his father’s place as such. The two never met in person, but Nathaniel knows and recognizes Day because of course he does, and Day knows the name Wesninski means a very, very dangerous person. Essentially the top assassin on the continent.
But as we do, Day decides he can’t/won’t handle the treatment anymore, whatever the last straw may be, and runs off to Palmetto in a kind of desperate chase of the stories his mother used to tell him when he was little. He knew she loved that kingdom. Somehow he finds Wymack - the twin’s royal advisor - or Wymack finds him, and once Wymack realizes who this kid is and has reason to believe he’s not here on Evermore business, he puts Day’s incredible talent and training as a tactician/commander to work as his pupil.
Meanwhile Nathaniel is still at Evermore, mistreated and learning from his own failures and mistakes until he’s nearly as good as his father at the family business.
I don’t know how long Nathaniel plans it, but he either plays the part for long enough or his skill is so undeniable that when the Moriyamas have plans for the Palmetto Kingdom, they send him and one other accomplished fighter to kill the king. Nathaniel goes quietly and decides he’s not coming back if he can help it.
So instead of killing the young king, Nathaniel’s panic has him turn on his partner at the very last second, stopping them just before they can get to the king. He takes them somewhere far away and does what he does best, leaving no one to report back to the Moriyamas. From then on it’s a waiting game to see how long the family will wait before they send someone after him.
Day’s followed them, and Nathaniel turns around from the body and sees this man he hasn’t seen in years, alive and safe away from Evermore. It’s as elating as it is crushing - because Day heard his partner call him by name, and there is no way Day will ever let a Wesninski walk away alive. Not if he knows what’s good for all of them.
Except Day doesn’t kill him, even when Nathaniel asks him to. (Better Day than Riko, Nathaniel knew that even when they were all stuck at Evermore). Instead, he takes Nathaniel back to the twins/Wymack, gives him a little bread, and they sit until he can pry out an explanation. (See the comic of this first meeting here.)
Day and Nathaniel spend most of their time together because Day refuses to let Nathaniel out of his or Wymack’s sight until he proves not a threat to the royal family, which proves an issue because between Andrew’s rotation of personal guards (he never gets along with them well enough that they stay/aren’t fired) Day is Andrew’s guard, which sometimes means Nathaniel is stuck a lot closer than Day would like. But after a long, long time, Day and Wymack decide Nathaniel was serious about the whole “runaway” thing and isn’t playing spy (maybe there’s some dramatic event/Nathaniel protecting a twin that convinces them or maybe it’s just a lot of little things over time). Andrew, after a rough spat with the latest guard, is again in need of a new one. Finally Day just asks “is there ANYONE you could possibly pretend to get along with that can do the job” and Andrew knows Nathaniel is dangerous he just doesn’t know exactly how or why (but oh he is curious) so maybe he just straight up says. “Wesninski.” And Day has to go “…. Fine.”
So boom. They knew each other superficially before, but now Andrew and Nathaniel are spending most of their time together and miraculously - no arguments. No spats. Day thanks the gods there’s no physical altercations (that’s probably what got the last guard fired so quick). Nathaniel is just a mystery with shady ability to tell the truth and Andrew can’t help his curiosity. Good old fashioned andreil :D
From here the timeline becomes essentially nonexistent, I have no idea when these things happen in relation to each other but so far they’re all things I like and want to include!
1) there’s plenty of games and competitions at Palmetto, we love a good tussle, and Nathaniel usually does quite well - he’s not good at playing fair, but his underhanded methods are not technically illegal and usually he can use his preferred weapon - dagger rather than sword. He does well except for the one time an opponent accidentally says/does something that was constantly said or done to Nathaniel while “training” at Evermore, and he comes back to Andrew and the tent he watched from in the beginning of a panic attack. Andrew doesn’t know anything about Nathaniel’s past at this point, but he knows a panic attack when he sees one. In trying to talk him through it, Andrew realizes that yes Nathaniel is scared of being hurt, but he’s more afraid of hurting others. Nathaniel won’t let Andrew call him by name, he flinches every time Andrew says it. After, Andrew asks what he should call him instead, and Nathaniel finally asks to be called Abram.
2) Balls! Masquerades! Abram doesn’t have many outfits, he wears the regular issued uniform to every event. Andrew will not stand for this. Abram always wears clothes that cover him fully, which is fine, Andrew can work with that. He’s still seen Abram in a tight shirt or two. So he commissions one of the most knowledgeable people in the court (we’re thinking it might be Allison, she’s a noble but she’s great with textiles/embroidery/etc) and gets Abram a new outfit. It still covers him, its still protective material, but it looks better. (Find Abram in a corset here). Andrew handles it totally normal and rational in his head when he sees Abram actually wearing it of course.
3) Day probably assumes for a little while that Andrew and Abram have got a more or less normal guard/charge relationship, even thinking it’s slightly antagonistic considering this is Andrew we’re talking about. (This doesn’t fit the timeline, but here’s a mini comic of one of Day’s misunderstandings hehe)
4) king Aaron! He became king at 18/20/whatever age we decide this universe deems old enough because he is in fact the elder twin here. I imagine their parents have both been dead and gone for at least a few years at this point. Dan is Aaron’s guard and she and Abram hit it off great as coworkers and friends. More on the uncertainty of the twins backstory later. (Drawings of Aaron and his queen Katelyn here!)
5) the angst. The Moriyamas should have heard from the Wesninski boy months ago - something somewhere went wrong. So, naturally, they go to collect their property. If they get away with it, we can imagine how it goes. What I don’t know is if the twins, Day, and Wymack know for sure he was kidnapped or if they have a little nagging in the back of their head that wonders if he’s only run away from the castle or if he’s run back to Evermore with everything he’s learned.
When he’s recovered, Day doesn’t let Andrew too close too often for a while. If Abram forgets where is for even a second too long - waking up from a nightmare, having a flashback - it’s long enough for it to be fatal to whoever might get too close to Abram. It’s already almost proved fatal for Andrew, after Abram played normal so well that Andrew let it slip - he forgot Abram was taken back to Evermore for them to finish making him into a thoughtless weapon, and they’d nearly succeed. He wakes Abram too quickly and ends up extremely lucky Abram recognizes both his voice and the way Andrew didn’t call him ‘Nathaniel’ or ‘Wesninski’. There’s really a huge amount to possibly be covered about this point so I won’t go into detail here - but if you like hurt/comfort you know where to find me 👀
6) the biggest thing we haven’t figured out is Andrew. Either he was kidnapped at a young age and only recovered in his teens, or the elder King Minyard didn’t much care for his second son. Though I’ve always liked the idea of Mr. Minyard being a good man who died shortly before the twins’ birth and their mother just couldn’t handle the grief or knowing that the twins look like him. Anyway a lot of the twins’ issues after both of their parents are dead are the advisors or other people around them that try to take advantage of their youth and inexperience for their own gain, without realizing that both Aaron and Andrew have had to grow up much too fast, each for their own reasons. They can usually see right past the tricks. It’s why they both trust Wymack so much - he’s one of the few adults that are truly there to help them, and not make decisions for them.
Im sure there’s more I missed, but this is long enough as it is lol. People have asked about the Trojans/Jean in this au, and I’d love to include them! My brain’s instinctive response is that Jeremy is some sort of high end noble/royal of a faraway kingdom, and Jean (always last to leave the nest, im so sorry baby) somehow gets over there, but I don’t have an idea of his or anyone else’s roles yet. Renee could even still have a hand in him getting there if we really want.
So I’m still writing snippets and drawing over here lol but i promise I don’t bite if you want to talk :D

do you have any tips for an artist who wants to start making one off comics? i really enjoy your artistic direction and style of story telling so i’m very interested in your thoughts on it
yes, definitely!!
-read lots of comics! and a variety of them, too--both ones in the sort of genre/style you'd like to make, but also ones in completely different genres, lengths, places of origin, traditionally/indie/digitally published, simple to experimental formatting, etc
-in relation to the last one, if a comic you read really speaks to you, take some time to study some page layouts from that comic! how do the panels vary from page to page? how much space is the text taking up? what sort of "shots" (to borrow from cinematic language lol) are they using? these shouldn't be fancy, just little thumbnails, but i find it really helps. here's a few i did from a guest in the house by emily carroll
Tumblr media
-start smalllll. its really important to build up your stamina, just like with any new sort of skill. if you wanna make a graphic novel thats 200+ pages long, you should make some comics that are 1, 20, 50 pages long and see them through to the end before taking on a super big project.
-this is related to the last point, but i think keeping your cast of characters small at first can also help build up your comic stamina. signals was the first longer comic i made, so i specifically really wanted to focus on just jeanne (and occasionally her parents and peers when they showed up)
-character sheets are helpful, but i also think the easiest way to start getting your characters drawn consistently is through actually drawing the comic! there's also gonna be panels where they look "off" or whatever, and its literally fine, i promise
-through the smaller comics, experiment with how you go about writing your story! theres no right or wrong way to write/plan out a story so, it takes some trial and error to figure out what will work best with your work flow. for me, i've found success in making a timeline of events for the story -> loosely guessing how many pages i'll need/want per section of the story -> freewriting (trying not to edit too much, just dumping all the words out) -> thumbnailing/loose sketching/editing text (all sort of happens in the same step; i find i need the layouts in front of me to understand what i need/don't need from the text i wrote) -> tight sketching -> final . but, if that flow doesn't work for you, try something else! i know a lot of comics people find success in writing a script first, with indications of page and panel-by-panel breakdowns
-take shortcuts often and without guilt. its a lot of work to make a comic! theres just a lot of drawings involved, that most people aren't gonna look at for very long! i especially recommend for infrequent/difficult things, like buildings or crowds or cars or bookcases, using some sort of 3d asset/brush to make your life easier. if you can reuse a drawing and change the crop/expression, do it!
-use some sort of tracker to track your progress on how many pages you've sketched/inked/finished. even if you don't have an external deadline, i think it's still good to give yourself some sort of timeline to work on (i recommend setting "ideal" goals and "realistic" goals, especially if you're working/still in school/etc). for signals, i used google sheets, because you can set up columns to be attached to little circle charts, so as you check off your progress, you can really easily see how much you've done/how much you have left to do (as i type this i highkey forget how i did that before, with signals, so...you might need to do some sheets experimentation to actually do this lol. but there's probably other trackers you can use too)
-understanding comics and making comics by scott mccloud are both great books, highly recommend them (easy to get second hand/from your library/🏴‍☠️)
-lastly, haveee funnnnn

Hey, I haven’t posted on here in a while, but! I read Azula in the Spirit Temple (finally) and I wanted to give my thoughts on it.
Overall rating, 7.5/10
Things I liked:
• These two panels:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how her humanity is shown in both of them. I don’t know if we’ve EVER seen Azula given the humanity shown in the second panel— fear, specifically trauma-motivated fear (and a traumatic experience not frequently discussed, her institutionalization). It’s significant because she’s showing fear without anger, which is rare for her. And I was blown away by the first panel. I didn’t expect them to be so explicit about it. It’s almost too explicit, but honestly, it’s needed (because people clearly don’t pick up on subtext). It made me very happy to see what we’ve all been saying stated outright and in canon. These two panels pushed the comic up from more of a 6/10.
• I liked the idea of spirits and avatars (no pun intended) of Azula’s past friends and family talking to her (This is something that’s planned for my fic, if I ever get that off the ground again). It allows Azula to directly confront what has been done to her and what she has done, which is important for a redemption arc. It also allows for some healing, because she’s able to talk to those who hurt her.
• Azula is not given a quick redemption arc in 80 pages. Thank god. While of course she deserves a redemption arc, a rushed Kuvira-style redemption arc would be awful.
• I like that, true to her classic hair symbolism, Azula has her hair down throughout her time in the temple but puts it back up when she goes back to meet her Fire Warriors.
• She looks like a child in most of the frames. It’s good.
• This may have been unintentional, but I like that it’s Zuko who yells at her about how she’s hurt everybody, she’s a monster etc; then he turns into something of a monster himself. This shows that Zuko has hurt her, that he’s not perfect.
• I think the writing in general was better than past comics (definitely better than Yang’s writing) and it bodes well for the future. I think, all things considered, Faith Hicks did a remarkable job with the barely salvageable remnants of Azula’s character.
Things I didn’t like:
• Azula is still hung up on her “rightful place on the throne!” She never showed any real desire for the throne in the show, and yet for some reason that has become a key piece of her identity. It really doesn’t make sense. Also, didn’t she drop that in S&S? She is still seeking to destabilize Zuko in AITST, but appears to also have regained the desire for the throne. It’s confusing and weird.
• I think Azula could’ve been shown being a little nicer to her ‘Fire Warriors,’ given that she doesn’t have the same pressure to keep them by her side as she did with Mai & Ty Lee, but it’s fair that she’s not. In S&S she’s a pretty terrible person and takes several steps back in her redemption arc (several extremely OOC steps), and while I want to forget the Yang comics ever existed, Hicks still has to adhere to them and that means not suddenly making Azula a lot more chill.
• It felt rushed, but of course it did, it’s 80 pages long. Still this did affect the satisfaction I got from it.
• Azula ought to have been more distressed when she found out that her friends left her given that that’s literally her biggest wound. However I also kind of like that she wasn’t, especially at the end, because it hints that she’s getting tired of the whole friendship through manipulation thing.
• I wish Azula had gotten to talk to the spirit in its monk form a little bit; we could’ve had an Iroh moment for her which would’ve been cool to see.
• In general Azula’s character has really been through the ringer so it’s hard to get anything good out of it, but again I’m impressed at what Hicks has been able to pull off. Still, it felt kind of unsatisfying that at the end of the comic Azula said that she would “find new followers, a new place to rule,” which is like, oh okay, so you kinda haven’t really learned anything? It would be nice to at least get a bit of an idea that she’s on a path towards redemption and healing.
Again, overall, 7.5/10, I really enjoyed this, honestly. There were some parts that made me roll my eyes but ultimately I was surprised at the amount of kindness given to Azula (not a lot, but more than usual). I’m thankful to Faith Erin Hicks & the rest of her team for doing the best they can with our girl. I hope this means she’ll get more good content in the future.

bada bim bada dam bitch
Im back on hating on lo on this account
ttoday i would like to talk about apollo and why rachels reason for choosing him to be the villian is extremly stupid
(All quotes from girl wonders podcast)
Audience member : what was your inspiration for making Apollo the bad guy when it came to uh, attacking Persephone?
Rachel : Um, so what I think what it comes down to is looking at Greek mythology as a whole and he is sort of the most—uh, he is one of the most important and crucial, uh, charac—die—deities in the pantheon. Um, he is in charge of so many things and I think it really subverts that uh, expectation that you have, um, where you think that he’s going to be very, very good and I think in society, we often hold up men who we perceive to be as very, very good and um, it just—it makes sense for the story to—to flip it a little bit, because Hades is kind of always the bad guy. So I’m like, “Hades could have a turn at being good” and like, the same for Hera as well.
Okay so I agree that switching the gods roles might be fun I myself make apollo an introvert while making artemis the extrovert in my retellings BUT Theres my issue
Lore olympus is a modern retelling with modern morals in it, there are so SO many gods who have done the same act as apollo in the muths but got it cut out in the comic why leave it on apollo though?
Becuse he was important, he still IS important thats the only reason why rararuchu decided to leave it in becuse he as a God as a person some people still worship is important
You know, Im accualy all in for the idea of feral villian apollo, and I mean serious villian apollo the type of villian that makes you feel complex emotions and the type of villian that doesnt plan to stop doing wrong, I would accualy love to see that
But unfortunetly Rachel doesnt know how to write complex villians or complex anything
You know how easier you could make apollo a villian with a good reason for hating persephone?
Make one of the mortals persephone killed hyacinthus, one of the most if arguably not the most beloved human lover of apollo
Make apollo a grieving villian that uses his plauge powers to the point where it starts to hurt him ALOT
Make apollo complex just like he was in the myths

hi there! i absolutely love you lockwood x reader imagines; you’re an excellent writer! (there aren’t many lockwood imagines so i love when you put something up).
i know you haven’t written any imagines for george and it’s completely fine if you don’t want to but i would absolutely love if you could write a george x reader imagine where like the reader went to the fittes ball and george expected to be home alone all night but then the reader comes back and george gets all flustered about seeing her in a dress and the reader finds it adorable. if it ends in smut or fluff it’s completely up to you! (sorry if this is really long :)
Thanks so much! <3

Distraction
words: 770 ~ content: fluff
-------------
You settle back into the leather seat of the cab. Thank goodness that’s over.
Balls and parties aren’t really your thing, to be honest, but Lucy and Lockwood insisted that you go with them. Until tonight, you were the only one who hadn’t met Kipps and his crew, and, you reasoned, it’d be good to put names to faces.
However, after a bit of mingling, it became clear that Lucy and Lockwood had formulated a plan. When they asked if you wanted to part of it, you managed to politely decline rather than yell I don’t want to be at this party any longer than necessary!
You wish you’d stayed home with George, even if the two of you had only sat side by side on the sofa reading.
He’d been a little prickly at first, but soon after moving in to Portland Row the two of you had started swapping history books, sci-fi comics and fantasy novels. It had soon become common knowledge that the two of you had open access to each other’s bookshelves.
The cab pulls up on Portland Row. You pay the driver and extricate yourself gratefully. You can’t wait to get out of this dress. It might look good, but it’s too much faff for you. You’d take pyjamas or a t shirt and jeans any day.
You climb the steps to the house and fumble with your key. Your hands are cold and it won’t slide into the lock as it does normally.
Instead you knock at the door, hoping George isn’t already asleep. It could go either way with him - he’s either tucked up in bed at 8pm with a cuppa, or he stays up working until the wee hours, finally falling asleep in one of his books at the kitchen table.
You wait for a few moments and then hear someone shuffling about, followed by George muttering “If it that’s glazing salesman again, I’m going to invite him in and make him listen to my dissertation on the discovery of the viking graveyard in Derbyshire. Every single word.”
When the door swings open and he blinks at you, you say, “I’m not a salesman, but do you promise you’ll read it all?”
His mouth opens and closes again, and then you watch his gaze travel the length of your body. Finally he says, “You’re wearing a dress.”
“Oh. Yes. For the ball.”
“Right.” He takes his glasses off, polishes them on his t-shirt, and puts them back on his nose. “I didn’t realise. That you were going to wear one.”
“Well, Lucy did, so I kind of.. Had to..”
He nods. “Yes. Of course.”
And then he looks at you some more and his face goes a little rosy. Is he blushing?!
It’s adorable.
“George,” you prompt.
His eyes snap back to your face. “Yeah?”
“Can I come in? It’s so cold.”
“Oh. Yes. Sorry. Of course.”
He steps back and you escape from the night air gratefully. Then you shut the door behind you, and the hall seems very narrow with the two of you in it.
You’re a breath away from each other. Has George always been this tall? He seems to dominate the space, frazzling your nerves.
“Tea?” He finally asks.
“Yes, please.”
He heads to the kitchen and you follow. When you get there, he pulls out a chair for you.
“Thanks.”
He busies himself making tea.
“Sorry about just now,” he says over his shoulder. “I wasn’t expecting you. I mean, you live here - I wasn’t expecting you in that dress. Somehow.”
You smile, because he is even cuter when he’s flustered.
“You’d prefer me out of the dress?”
“Yes. No!” He stumbles, and then inhales deeply. “I mean…. I suppose I just noticed you.”
Oh.
Well this is delightful.
You push back your chair and move to stand next to him, your shoulder touching his.
“Well, now you know how I feel.”
He shifts, his eyes big and dark behind his glasses. “What do you mean?”
“I’ve been waiting for you to notice me ever since the day we met,” you smile, reaching for his hand and tangling your fingers with his.
He squeezes, gently. “I like to think I would have. Eventually. I get distracted a lot,” he admits, shyly.
You grin. “Perhaps I’ll have to wear dresses like this more often, so I can be the one who distracts you.”You gaze at each other for a little while, and when you eventually share your first kiss, it’s so distracting that the tea doesn’t get made for some time.

Crafting A Comic: Frog Alarmclock And The Fabric Of Time
For a long time, I’ve wanted to make a webcomic.
I’ve written two webcomics, Legend of the Hare and Saffron and Sage, but I didn’t draw either of them. And I’ve always been a little self-conscious about that, and harbored a desire to make a comic all by myself, art and all. This desire has been inflamed lately by the success of ForEach, a comic made by one of my discord mods. It’s getting kind of popular, and already has more interest and engagement that Saffron and Sage, something I’m very normal and well-adjusted about, and I’ve been thinking this is something that’s in my power to make. My art, while still limited, is finally at the point where I can do this, and I’ve been writing forever. All I need is a plan.
I have never been a good planner, and it shows a lot in my comics, so I want to have a lot more of the comic written out and planned before pencil comes to paper than I traditionally have done, and I‘d like to turn this brainstorming into Content for you all. It’s a critical part of the writing process, and one that gets glossed over a lot, in part because it leads to slightly rambling essays. But I do have one thing to start with: a protagonist.
Tumblr media
(Art by HolyHandGrenade)
Frog Alarmclock is a young woman being trained to join a coven of powerful witches who stitch the fabric of time. She has very little interest in this grand destiny, and is a bit of a stereotypical NEET loser despite her great magic power. Her name, Frog, comes from a knitting term referring to a way of correcting mistakes, but obviously frog-the-animal theming is cute and marketable. I’ve posted a bit about this character on my discord, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, so I think there’s some potential here worth mining. So far, though, the only plot element I’ve been able to come up are
Frog lives with her Grandma, who trains her. Grandma’s power level has fluctuated wildly in my rough drafts, from “generic witch” to “personally gets into fights with Satan in hell”, and I’ve been leaning towards the higher end. Frog and Grandma don’t get along. I’m giving her the placeholder name “Batra”. It sounds witchy, sounds batty, and it comes from batrachia, which means Frog, so it fits the theming subtly.
Frog lives in a Florida suburb. I don’t remember why I settled on Florida specifically, and that may change, but I do like the idea that this cosmic entity lives in kind of a slummy neighborhood. I may move them to Lowell, MA, which is closer to home and an aesthetic I know better.
Frog has a crush on a pink biker chick with pig theming, the Miss Piggy to her Kermit. For the time being, lets call this character Susie Pepper. Susie from “Sus” the latin word for pig, and Pepper because Peppa Pig. It’s a placeholder name.
That’s all I got so far. Even the name, “Frog Alarmclock and the Fabric of Time” is placeholder I made up just now while writing this. I’ve written a few random short stories of this character, trying to get a feel for her, and I even made her my character in a weekly Pathfinder game. But it’s time to try and get a proper story going. With Legend of the Hare, I had a huge over-arcing five-year plan for each layer in the tower, but little sense of where the comic was going to be in three pages, which led to a lot of problems. With Saffron and Sage, I set out with a vague over-arching storyline of “Saffron must rescue her prince”, and kept the comic to short episodic self-contained stories, taking heavy inspiration from Gunnerkrigg Court. Saffron would go on wacky adventures, and rescuing Faunus would be some vague future goal she was theoretically working towards in the same way Ash Ketchum wanted to be a Pokemon Master but took 20 years to get around to that. This worked better, but led to the comic feeling very aimless and meandering, which is part of why it’s turned increasingly farcical. In some ways, my two comics would be better served by switching protagonists. Saffron is very driven in a way suited for a somewhat goofy battle shounen, and if Jill set out on an adventure to rescue Riley she’d be distracted more easily and it’d lend itself better to an adventure-of-the-week format.
Frog, being a NEET loser, is closer to Jill than to Saffron. And suddenly, just from that sentence, I know what I want to do with this comic now. Writing this essay has given me one of those Eureka moment that happens sometimes, when you go from no ideas to the entire plot of the comic all at once. Frog is Jill if she was the Rabbit Champion for a few years before the story started. They’ve got different personalities, of course, Frog isn’t just Jill with a big hat, but this is the throughline I needed. I can work with this, get a first draft done, get an editor to look at it, and report back to you with more detail.

This might sound like an odd question but I’m planning on making my own comic at some point and I was wondering if you had any advice? Specifically in making the plot, deciding what each character does and maybe panel/page composition and how to make harmonious colour palettes?
Also one more question but when you were at the beginning of developing Stray Souls did you post little lore/plot snippets and character doodles/info or did you mainly wait until the comic was out?
(Sorry I know this is a lot but I was just wondering sort of what your process is because everything seems so seamless and well-put-together :> )
Ehh first of all the seamless and put-togetherness is an illusion 🫠
Tumblr media
A lot of my work is built organically (fancy way of saying I just sorta wing it) and very dependent on what makes me excited at each given point. Generally, I come up with an idea for a character or a plot point and from there start branching out.
Say, I create character A. A needs a story so I create some beats for them, a beginning-middle-end type thing. While thinking of this, characters B, C, etc pop up as placeholders/devices for A's story, and the world gets shaped around it as well. Then suddenly something in the world gets decided that in turn changes A's story a little, and so on. Then I go into B, C, etc and do the same thing (build a story, let it bleed into the world and let the world bleed into it).
There's pros and cons to this sort of thing of course. Most of the time I over-develop characters or world bits that are completely unnecessary and clutter the narrative (especially when it's something like a comic, where things need to be explained visually and economically), and because of this sort of chaotic process I also tend to get entangled in my own concepts and lose track of my main threads. I don't dislike it entirely so it's just a matter of figuring out what works best for your own goals and processes.
Some general advice for comics that I've learned from trial and error: try stripping your story down to its bare bones and see what you absolutely need VS what's there for flavour or added context. Only add flavour once you're sure you can tackle the minimum, both in writing and artwise. Keep your character designs simple if you value your hands lol. It's fun to design complicated details but you WILL get tired of drawing them after a while. Sometimes it's ok to tell and not show 🤷‍♂️ if you're a one-man team sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet. Bear in mind that long stories will take YEARS to complete in comic format. Not an end all be all, but you do need to think about that. Also just go for it once you've got a structure you feel good about. I personally don't like over planning and don't even script things, so I don't think you need to have everything on paper before getting some chapters rolling. Most of what I've learned about comics has been making them, not thinking about making them. Oh, and readers tend to be more lenient than we give them credit for - if you're passionate enough about your world or characters, chances are at least some people will be interested regardless of whether you think art or writing are up to par
As for the other question, I spoiled the shit out of stray souls before launching it and still kinda do it for fun LMAO. Nothing too serious ofc but I've always loved giving people an insight into characters and world outside of the comic since the comic itself is a little peek into the whole thing. It also kinda serves to keep people interested imo
And I just can't keep my mouth shut about my stories lol

as someone wit cancer (posting this anonymously because some ppl on the internet hear this and go fucking crazy) I’ve always found John Constantine is actually a really interesting rep In theory. I do think Delano like most things fumbles the bag when it comes to that topic but… it’s Delano what do you expect. I really like timelines where John gets treatment before it’s terminal (though usually that very idea seems out of character) or something it’s such a comfort hc. sorry for rambling. I was wondering how YOU interpreted johns cancer storylines as the John Constantine guy.
hey, you’re safe here, do what’s best for you! and I wish you the best. and never apologize for rambling! i love rambling. please keep rambling.
i’ll put this under a read more because i realized how long this is, but i hope it helps answer your question!
but as the john constantine girlie, it’s always been such an incredibly interesting plotline to me. he does take drastic measures to cure himself in the main vertigo timeline, and his interactions with other cancer patients and then realizing that this thing is terminal… it was intriguing. because it’s john. how he handles things is so much different than how others will. you’re never going to get the logical answer- “maybe he’ll get treatment.” “maybe he’ll go find healing magics that could help him.” “maybe he’ll go spend more time with his loved ones.” this is how most people would think to act. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have cancer, but if it were me, i feel like i’d be angry to be living on a timer, so i’d probably check a few things off my bucket list out of spite. not john constantine, though. instead he threatens a war in hell over his soul so everyone has to cure him.
john smokes cigarettes. we all know this to be a fact. however, he ends up getting terminal lung cancer as a result. it shows a very possible risk that most people aren’t willing to acknowledge until it’s too late.
i haven’t spoken to my mother in forever because our relationship was never good ( can’t you see why i like john constantine now? ), but in a way, it reminded me of her. she was a heavy smoker, and i, as a child who sometimes went over to her house begrudgingly, would be caught up in second hand smoke. as a result, these sorts of things were big worries of mine, and yet every time i told her she can’t do things like smoke inside the house and such, she’d just do it anyway. which put everyone at risk.
while, of course, cancer isn’t always caused by smoking, it can be, and she never took it seriously, not even when she was coughing badly and it was clearly dangerous for her health anyway. I don’t think she ever will.
within john’s character, though, we know he clearly didn’t care much. of course, he didn’t want to die because he knew he was going straight to hell at the time. so he concocted his little plan and ended up curing himself of cancer and not dying as a result… and then continuing with the bad habit. he’s a comic book character, so i guess it’s different, but i think it kind of sent the wrong message.
after a tale of john being distressed about having cancer and having to say goodbye to the people he cared about, or john meeting others who had cancer and being affected by the loss of someone who had died as a result of it, i think some expected him to put down the cigarettes. but alas, john has never been the kind of person to make good decisions.
so when i see him doing the smart thing in some storylines or aus that people write and so forth, i’m always stunned. like good on him, of course, handling his shit before it gets worse, but john has always liked to be a pain in the ass and wait until the worst possible moment. like the exact day he’s supposed to die for example. though i do enjoy these more, because it sends the right message…. john isn’t the kind of character you look to to give you the right message in most aspects. his political beliefs are good, but everything else is a dumpster fire.
but in my opinion, john constantine is a character- one of a rare few- who has cancer. there’s a described time of his struggles with it, some depression from it, the loss of someone he’d met who had it, and that was a journey. but then, in true john constantine fashion, the cornered rat idea he has, he cures himself of it- or, well, more forces some other beings to cure him of it, but hey.
that’s all i got, but feel free to explain further on anything you want to!

How goes the fma x albedo fic? I hope that doesn't sound pushy, I'm genuinely curious. And in that vein, do you have any little drabbles you may have written or want to write? Especially with your recent kny ocs/yourself and your siblings. That'd be super fun to read about! Your art AND your writing is so freaking good, the moment I see you've posted something new on your blog I'm clicking it so fast. Same with your ao3 account ❤️
Thank you for the kind words!!! Currently not working on any fics, since I just came out of 10 weeks of summer research where my days began at 8 am and ended at 9 pm for probably less than minimum wage hahaha (doing research is a Bit Sad but I get a whole month to relax before classes start again so thank goodness for that)
Tumblr media
I do however!!! Have a lot of plans!!! If you’re interested you can read more below!
Plans include but are not limited to:
Finally working on Homuncular Nature again!! I definitely do have a lot of plans and cool scenes playing out in my head for the next chapter, it’ll just come down to when I actually put pen to paper (or stylus to iPad) to actually organize and write them all. The road block I think is that I have seen neither Albedo nor fmab very recently and all my concrete ideas are for around the 30 episode mark for fmab, the turning point with the first actual confrontation against father and the subsequent Briggs arc.
Rewriting Ten Thousand Maple Leaves! A lot of people have been very kind but I think I missed the mark with my first chapter to be honest. My writing has gotten a lot wordier and less succinct, which feels like I’m filling a chapter more with fluff and unnecessary description than actual content. I think I also dislike how I characterized Sanemi and how quickly Kazuha was willing to agree with things. Writing both of them is kind of a difficult challenge tbh! I think in rewriting it I want to give back to Kazuha more of his vagrant role in the games, where he is avoiding the law for reasons somewhat out of his control.
Ebisu siblings content! I think it might be fun to try having them interact with more of the canon characters in kny but I also think there’s some value in a complete sort of outsider point of view when inserting characters into a piece of media. I feel like whenever I see self inserts I see a lot of ocs making themselves indispensable and making meaningful relationships with existing characters that way and that’s totally valid! That’s a lot of what I do for crossovers as well. I think when it comes to my own ocs though, I want them to feel grounded in some form and the reality of it is that none of the characters I make based on myself or real people are that impressive or remarkable. But I also think there’s a lot of value in showing smaller scale things outside of the main interactions and plot to show that even though we aren’t remarkable, we still have our own meaningful connections and ideologies and stories :) in the end the Ebisu siblings are a lot more visual though so I may just continue making doodles and art without writing anything haha
Kirby & Meta Knight ageswap AU: I was mostly doing this on my ask-gikabi sideblog in short form comics, but I lost sight of what I wanted to do after making the discord and starting to interact with some of the people who followed it. I think a lot of people are inspired and have their own very cool ideas that I wanted to take into account but then eventually it was no longer my story or the story I wanted to tell, which is why I’m thinking of restarting it as a fic. This one is still in very rough idea stage though, I have honestly no clue how I’m even going to begin organizing it
Yanfei ace attorney crossover: this one’s just pure crack lmao I would definitely write it as crack taken seriously but I think this is fun to explore just for small ideas that pop up every now and then, i.e. yanfei is semi-immortal because she’s half adeptus so it would be Really Funny to me if she showed up in dgs era, got her attorney’s license, went into hiding after it became obvious that she wasn’t aging, and then re-emerged after rebranding herself as her own daughter or granddaughter. That, and I have a lot of fun imagining someone as pragmatic as yanfei trying to get through the sheer chaos of aa despite being otherworldly
Continuing winter weather advisory: I got to a really good point in that fic and was rereading it today like,,, damn I wrote that? And it would be fun to see where I planned on going with it so I do want to also try working on that a bit if I can
Kazuha & Kunikuzushi role swap au: this is something I posted about a Long While ago but it’s an idea I continue to be fascinated with :) I especially enjoy how these two characters could have had completely different roles and personalities depending on how their pasts happened (with wanderer being so nice and turning so bitter and kazuha growing up so spoiled (for lack of a better word) and turning out so weary and yet kind
Link click and mha crossover: this one is honestly just a very recent idea but I think it would be fun to make a drabble on how lightime photo studio would be able to continue operating even in another world and the trouble they might get into for illegal quirk usage and what using cheng xiaoshi’s powers in a world where being able to tell the future is canonically possible would entail
I have!! So many ideas!! And not enough time or motivation to actually write any of them most of the time :’)
But I’m very glad to hear that you enjoy them and look forward to my posts!! :D I really hope I can work on some of these over the last month of summer vacation that I have :)

However, your kindness and outstanding empathy convinced the man to give you an additional task for a doubled compensation; gaining the trust of Dream Of the Endless, held captive into the basement for over a century. Despite the shock of finding such an ethereal entity stripped of all his clothes and contained into a confined space, you had to accept for the sake of your father. But the more you got to speak to the mysterious anthropomorphic personification who didn't utter a single word, the more you were lost into his eyes that, conversely, seemed to contain the entire universe. A deep connection formed between the two of you, separated only by a thick layer of glass.
Little did you know, what started like a simple housemaid job was about to change your life forever.
Author's note: This was originally planned out as a oneshot, but in the end, I realized I wanted to write more and essentially cover the main events of Season 1. Please note that I don’t really know much about the comics although I’m doing some research, therefore, I can mainly base my knowledge and impressions over the Netflix show.

Chapter 1
Tumblr media
The massive Fawney Rig Manor in Wych Cross made you feel as if you had entered a completely different dimension. The structure was very old-looking, with gothic details that, at least from the outside, could give anyone the chills. The first time you visited the Manor you had to swallow your uneasiness and forget about the rumors involving the potentially dark secrets surrounding the house. With a sick father depending on your care and financial support, you found yourself in need of the salary offered by Mr. Alex Burgess.
Your waitress job was far from profitable and you knew they couldn't afford to give you, nor anyone else, a raise at the time. Covering all your expenses each month had become too much for your pockets alone and such a low wage was just keeping the noose around your neck. With Mr. Burgess’s offer, you would receive twice your previous pay, free room and board and a potentially long-term contract that seemed particularly fruitful and just generally ideal for your needs. You couldn’t allow yourself to be picky and miss such a golden opportunity without at least trying, not for a bunch of rumors that could easily be made up.
As soon as you stepped into the entrance hall, you could smell old wood and incense in the air. The interior design was the perfect Jacobean Revival Architectural Style that you were expecting to see and overall it looked way less scary than the exterior part. You were accompanied along a corridor, ancient items and antique furniture could be found at each corner, against every wall. Long flights of stairs reached the upper floor, big curtains were creating divisions in the open space areas.
Different items were meticulously catalogued and arranged everywhere, looking like they were coming straight from 1900, frozen in time.
When you met Alex Burgess and his husband, Paul McGuire, you could feel your nerves finally loosen up. The Lord of the Estate could barely walk, carried around by his spouse on a wheelchair and constantly under medical check. He looked rather frail and definitely less intimidating than you had anticipated, far from the evil mastermind that you had pictured into your head.
In the end, they hired you as one of the housemaids. You couldn't tell if your personal story touched them more than you thought it would, but you got what you were hoping for and you couldn’t be happier. Your inbox was still filled to the brink with unpaid receips from your family doctor, which you still had to pay off.
The day you visited the Estate again for the final agreement, Mr. McGuire gave you a complete house tour to let you acquire some familiarity with the place in advance. It was even bigger than it seemed and the fear of getting lost became quite consistent the more rooms you came across along the way.
After finally moving in, it took you a couple weeks to get used to your new routine. Suffering from insomnia you were quite the light sleeper by nature, but finding yourself in a completely different environment had caused you a bit of destabilization.
The rest of the staff didn’t seem to be particularly interested in acting friendly with you, so the moment you gained enough confidence to go through the house on your own, you didn’t need to worry about striking a conversation anymore.
There were some rooms marked as ‘off limits’, but you had expected as much. Every now and then, you could spot at least one guard or two standing in front of the basement door, a very slim entrance you didn’t even notice at first. There was something big going on down there, you could feel it in the pit of your stomach whenever you passed by, but you promised yourself that you would mind solely your own business and only do what you were getting paid for. You forced yourself to move on and never looked those guys in the eyes.
However, apprehension and curiosity were starting to nib on you. The times they left the door unattended to take care of matters inside, you had to restrain yourself from peeking, just to discover what they were containing that was so important it could not be revealed.
You didn't know what came to you, really. You never were one to mind other people and their business, but something just seemed disturbingly weird and you were having a hard time brushing it off.
The first month at the Manor went through quite smoothly and you were actually starting to appreciate your job as a whole. Mr. McGuire assisted you with the main tasks in the garden, as he used to work there himself before marrying Alex and passing his responsibilities to someone else. Spending time in the open was fun, dipping your fingers into the grass, the earth and the water felt grounding and liberating. It was tiring, yes, but amazingly satisfying and ideal to set your mind off things.
Inevitably, cleaning proved to be exhausting. The first week you had to bear with aching muscles and serious back pains, but nothing that some good rest on your day off could not relieve.
From time to time, they liked hosting parties with a selective number of wealthy guests, with which you had absolutely nothing in common. All you could do was smile, pour them drinks after drinks and listening to their rants or personal stories when alcohol hit them. Nothing particularly interesting or noteworthy, but again, it served as a good distraction and you appreciated the interactions.
Mr. McGuire had become a friendly presence for you in the house, often stopping by for some tea during your breaks. You could see an incredible gentleness sparking into his eyes, but there was something else in the man’s expression that you couldn't quite understand yet. His husband, on the other hand, was barely seen around the mansion. You assumed that his physical conditions were preventing him from leaving the bedroom, so you didn't want to pry.
One night, you were cleaning the coffee table in the living room space, filled with the clutter left by a group of noisy visitors. The basement door was right there beyond the open curtains, guarded by a man and a woman who eyed you up and down when you arrived. As you placed the scattered napkins, empty cigarette packets and dirty wine glasses on a silver tray, you felt their presence even though they weren’t on your line of sight. You thought they wanted to keep you under their radar to be sure you wouldn’t snoop around too much, but as curious as you were, you certainly didn’t want to risk your job for something you weren’t allowed to see.
Still, it was bothering you, not knowing what the basement actually contained. Were you even safe there?
In the end, you decided that you didn’t really want to know, for your mental sanity.
The next day, you were planting new seeds into the garden with your knees deep into the topsoil, enjoying the warmth of the sun finally kissing your cheeks and invigorating your skin. From the corner of your eye, you could spot Mr. Burgess coming over on his own, slowly maneuvering the wheelchair in the grass and taking place in front of you.
Looking up from your handwork, you greeted him with a gentle smile. You were surprised to see him there, without his lover and with no nurse accompanying him around. “Good morning Sir.”
“Good morning, Miss Y/LN. Such a lovely weather today, isn’t it?”
“Indeed. How are you feeling today?”
Admittedly, he got even paler compared to the first time you saw him. And yet, he still looked rather distinguished with that black suit he was wearing.
“Much better, now that I can breathe a bit of fresh air. I had to beg Paul for an hour before he could finally allow me to get out. He told me you would be here.”
You assumed he accepted to let Alex out because of your presence in the garden. You didn’t have any sort of medical experience, but you proved to have good reflexes and a strong initiative when required.
In other words, no pressure or anything...
“He seems rather fond of you lately and I can see why myself. Nobody is taking this as seriously as you do, you are not afraid of getting dirty.”
You blushed a little, it was rare to receive compliments for your efforts on the job. “Thank you Sir.”
He stayed there, watching you in silence as you continued digging into the wet soil with bare hands. He got lost in thought, adjusting the warm blanket over his legs and pushing his black glasses further up his nose.
And then, he spoke again. “Can I be honest with you, Miss Y/LN?”
You could see he was getting nervous now, fingers gripping the blanket even harder. From behind his glasses, you could spot a pair of reddened and very puffy eyes. There was more than a physical uneasiness affecting him somehow, that much was clear.
You stopped your motions and curiously looked back at the man. “Of course.”
“When you told us about your father, when I saw how resoluted you were to work so hard for his sake, my emotions got all over the place. I never had a good relationship with my old man, you see... he always compared me to my brother Randall because I didn’t turn out the way he wanted. Unfortunately, he died at Gallipoli when I was still very young.”
You didn’t know he had a brother. “Oh, I am so sorry to hear that.”
Mr. Burgess smiled slightly. “My father didn’t take it well at the time. To him, Randall was his only legacy and he never acknowledged me. I did my best to follow his lead, to please him whenever I could, to be the son he expected me to become. In the end, it was never enough. I was never enough.”
You grew up with your father as an only child, you had all the love, attention and care you could ever ask for and more. It pained you to know Alex Burgess had to go through a life of misery despite the comforts and riches he was surrounded with.
“The day my father died, I told him that if Randall were alive, he would hate him as much as I did. Those were the last words he heard from me before leaving this world forever.”
He left you speechless, even more so for the depth of his story. He looked absolutely devastated, tears forming at the corners of his eyes.
“I would like to say that I regret what I did, but that would be a lie. I inherited all his possessions, but also the burdens that came with them. There is… one, in particular, which I’ve been trying to get rid of for a very long time now. But if I do, that choice might have serious consequences for me, Paul and anyone else involved.”
Your mind immediatly went to the basement you couldn't dare approaching. Could that be the hidden burden he was so dramatically referring to?
“For the last few years, I’ve been asking myself the same question over and over again; am I just as bad as my father was?”
You considered what he told you, thinking carefully about the proper words to use. It wasn’t an easy question and it had no easy answer either, there just was too much you didn’t know. About him, about his father, about their history, about what he inherited and they were keeping buried in the dark.
In the end, you went with what your heart suggested you to say. “You are only human Sir. We all may say horrible things when we face traumatic experiences, we shouldn't be ashamed of our weaknesses. The words we speak in our worst times do not define us and I think you should really forgive yourself at this point in life”
You watched the man as he stared down at his wrinkly hands, bottom lip quivering and frail shoulders drooping against the wheelchair.
You continued. “As for your burden, I’m sure you will make the right decision. Would the consequences you speak about be worse than what would happen if you left things the way they are now?”
“You have made a good point.” He paused for a moment, then looked up at the sky. “But am I really brave enough to risk it?”
You should have kept yourself as far as possible from his affairs, as you had absolutely nothing to do with whatever they were hiding. And yet, that voice into your head was pushing you to do it, to say it out loud, to force your way through it because you wanted to know. You needed to know. As much as it worried you.
Why though? You couldn't explain it. Just a feeling maybe, a mere gut sensation that you struggled to ignore.
Alas, the words came out on their own accord, before you could even process them. “If there’s anything I can do Sir, anything at all, I may help you out.”
Did you really expect that Mr. Burgess would let you know about his family’s darkest secrets, when you had no right of intruding and no knolewdge of what was going on? Obviously not. But that wasn’t enough to stop you.
He, for his part, said nothing. Didn’t even flinch as he kept his teary eyes glued to the burning sun. You waited, seconds turned to minutes and the awkward silence had become too much to bear.
Defeated, you decided to apologize. “I’m sorry, I overstepped. Please forget what I just said, Mr. Burgess.”
However, you were shocked to hear what he said next. “You would help, would you.”
Wait. Was he actually considering it?
“You know… maybe that’s not such a bad idea. Meet me in the living room tonight at 10 PM. There is something I should be discussing with you.”
Your heart skipped a beat. Whether it was for the excitement, or the fear of biting more than you could chew, you couldn’t really tell. For all you knew they were in fact holding the devil into the basement, which would match with the different rumors you had previously heard. On the other hand, you figured they would never mention it to you if it could potentially put your own life at risk.
Right?
Nevertheless, you accepted his invitation and for the entire day you couldn’t think about anything else, mentally beating yourself up for your impulsive behavior.
Tumblr media
That night, you were feeling sick to the core. As soon as you approached the living room space, you heard Mr. Burgess and Mr. McGuire holding an animate conversation. You moved closer, staying hidden behind the curtains just enough to hear what they were whispering about.
“Alex, darling please, be reasonable. She has nothing to do with this.”
“She might be our only chance, Paul. The only way to finally end it all.”
“You’ve been trying to get a word from him for years! What makes you think that it will be different with someone else?”
Him? Who was him?
“He won’t talk to me, we have determined as much. But you saw it yourself in the past few weeks, she is good with people.”
You heard Paul grunting. “Come on Alex, you know he is not people. A pretty face and some sugar-coating words are the last thing he needs.”
“I don’t have too much time left!” There was desperation in Alex’s voice. “I can’t stand the thought of this burden weighting on anyone else’s shoulders. Least of all yours.”
Hence, there was someone held captive into the basement. According to the rumors, a demon was summoned by Roderick Burgess many years before, granting the man wealth and prosperity until the day he died. You didn't know how true such a horrifying theory actually was, but evidently, there was a bit of foundation in the creative stories people liked to come up with.
A part of you wanted to just run back to your room and forget you even offered to assist them in the first place, but what would you hope to accomplish doing so? Nevertheless, your guts once again prompted you to move forward with whatever you were getting yourself into. You were so incredibly close to uncover the mystery that was heavily tickling your strange curiosity and you couldn't let that pass.
Gaining enough courage to leave your hiding spot, you walked through the curtains to announce your arrival. Both men were now facing your way, their expressions two opposite poles.
“Ah, good evening Miss Y/LN,” said Mr. Burgess. “Your timing is impeccable.”
Paul sighed, but he remained silent and greeted you with a nod.
Your fingers nervously grasped the apron tied around your uniform. “Good evening. You said there was something you wanted to discuss with me?”
Mr. Burgess cleared his throat. “There is, yes... but it is better if we show you. Paul?”
You could see Mr. McGuire looking at you with a pained expression, full of guilt and sorrow as he took the wheelchair and guided Alex to the basement door while gesturing you to follow. The guards immediatly stood up straight like two perfectly trained royal soldiers, letting you all in and briefly glancing at you in utter confusion. You ignored them and just walked behind Paul with your head held high, waiting for him to secure the wheelchair into the elevator.
You followed straight, standing at Paul’s right side while the elevator vibrated loudly and started to descend. A metallic sound echoed in the humid and dark cellar the moment it came to a stop.
Your legs felt weak and your feet were hurting after an entire day of work with those shoes. Your heart was beating so fast that you could hear it rumbling in your ears. You struggled for a moment, almost unable to move. You had to force your body to cooperate, stepping out of the elevator and biting your tongue to keep your nervousness at bay.
Paul flipped a big switch on the wall and, from where you were standing, you could see the lights flickering and turning on at the same time. He kept walking, the wheelchair sliding onto a dais that had been constructed between the main floor and the squary platform at che center, surrounded by a pool of dark water. You could spot something now, a big and transparent object chained to the ceiling and floor, remaining upright and suspended in the air.
Tumblr media
But when Paul moved the wheelchair aside and allowed you to see the odd sphere in its entirety, your breath got caught in your throat and your legs almost gave out under you again. There was someone looking up and meeting your eyes, curled up into that glass cage like a bird with clipped wings. You saw no horns, no sharp teeth, no claws… there was nothing that could be even remotely similar to the devil people described.
In fact, the being in front of you was absolutely ethereal; pale skin and lean muscles that seemed carved into marble, dark hair falling messily on his forehead, full lips, a strong jawline and a pair of blue eyes containing the entire universe inside. Two deep orbs that seemed to stare right into your soul and shine in the dim light.
You were looking at the most beautiful creature you had ever seen in your entire life.
Who was that man? Why did they strip him of all his clothes? Wasn’t he cold down there, in a room that was at least five degrees cooler than the rest of the house (and had the exposed skin of your arms and legs crawling)?
It was wrong. So very wrong. On so many levels. “What is going on here…?” Your voice cracked.
Mr. Burgess placed his right hand over the glass in front of him, his attention was directed to the imprisoned being, who you couldn't stop looking at. “Miss Y/LN, I present you Dream of the Endless. In 1916, my father summoned him by accident, instead of his sibling Death. He put him into this cage and over the binding circle to seal his power away. He begged him to bring my brother Randall back, demanded riches and immortality… all he received from him was silence, until the day he died.”
You looked at the golden circle under your feet, perfectly dried and well preserved over time. You processed what he just told you and your head started to spin like a top. If he got summoned in 1916, he remained locked up for 106 years, over a century spent into such a tiny space, away from everything he used to know while the world continued changing and advancing in his absense.
But did you even want to believe what Alex was telling you? According to his story, both Alex and Paul would be centenarians and it just didn’t add up.
“My father said we couldn’t free him, that he would come for us to seek revenge. With him gone, I told Dream that I was willing to let him go, as long as he could guarantee that Paul and I would be left unharmed in return. Unfortunately, I’m still waiting for an answer.”
There was something that sounded strangely familiar and was causing you a weird sense of dread. Dream of the Endless…. Dream…. where did you hear that before?
ℌ𝔢 𝔦𝔰 𝔰𝔞𝔦𝔡 𝔱𝔬 𝔰𝔭𝔯𝔦𝔫𝖈𝔩𝔢 𝔰𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔬𝔯 𝔡𝔲𝔰𝔱 𝔦𝔫𝔱𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔢𝔶𝔢𝔰 𝔬𝔣 𝔠𝔥𝔦𝔩𝔡𝔯𝔢𝔫 𝔞𝔱 𝔫𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱, 𝔱𝔬 𝔟𝔯𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔬𝔫 𝔰𝔩𝔢𝔢𝔭 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔡𝔯𝔢𝔞𝔪𝔰.
And then it hit you. It was something you read about when you were a child, a tale as old as time that thoroughly enchanted your little self and you had almost forgotten while growing up.
But it couldn't be. It didn't make any sense.
“Wait. Are you telling me that your father summoned the actual Sandman? The Lord of Dreams and Nightmares himself?”
The prisoner moved forward, staring at you with suspicion and surprise mixed together. Somehow you knew it was all true and so incredibly absurd at the same time. He was out of this world, so magical-looking despite his current vulnerability. There was no mistake, it was real. He was real.
“Miss Y/LN, how do you know him...?”
𝔜𝔬𝔲 𝔥𝔞𝔳𝔢 𝔪𝔢𝔱 𝔥𝔦𝔪 𝔟𝔢𝔣𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔥𝔢 𝔥𝔞𝔰 𝔪𝔞𝔫𝔶 𝔫𝔞𝔪𝔢𝔰. ℌ𝔢 𝔦𝔰 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔎𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔬𝔣 𝔇𝔯𝔢𝔞𝔪𝔰 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔑𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱𝔪𝔞𝔯𝔢𝔰, 𝔥𝔢 𝔦𝔰 𝔇𝔯𝔢𝔞𝔪 𝔬𝔣 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔈𝔫𝔡𝔩𝔢𝔰𝔰.
“I read about him. A very long time ag-” You stopped in your tracks, your eyes widened as realization hit you on the spot. “...Oh my God.”
Slowly, almost tentatively, you moved closer to the entity. He slightly tilted his head at you and inspected your features, every change in your expression, every emotion rippling out of your body.
And then you spoke, revealing what had you so perturbed. “1916. It was the year of the Encephalitis Lethargica, known as the Sleepy Sickness. Those people who never woke up, the famous case of Unity Kinkaid printed on newspapers and books to this day (and even my neverending insomnia, perhaps)... It all took place because of this, because you have the Sandman trapped into this cage since 106 years ago.”
You thought he was just a fairy tale, a bedtime story parents used to tell their kids to ensure they had nice dreams when afraid of the dark, or to warn them about nightmares hunting them if they weren't good enough. But seeing him in the flesh now, having this incredibly beautiful, yet broken being before you, your stomach flipped upside down and your heart raced violently against your ribs.
Your hand came in contact with the glass as well, it was freezing cold and thick under your touch. Dream’s shiny eyes shifted down to look at your palm, then back up to meet your gaze again. Anger, frustration, pain, loneliness… you could see this and so much more, you felt it as if those emotions were your own.
Mr. Burgess cleared his throat. “Well, this burden my father left me is something I really don’t want to keep until the end of my days. He doesn’t talk to me though, he only stares, all the damn time. Just like he’s doing now with you.”
You snorted, irritation taking over you. “With all due respect Sir, he’s been captured and placed into a cage for more than a century, without a shred of clothing on and withheld against his will. The fact he doesn’t want to talk shouldn’t really be surprising to you.”
He let out a pained sigh. "You are right, of course. And very smart too... this is why I need your help."
"And how exactly am I supposed to help?"
You found your rising anger very questionable, considering you literally brought this upon yourself. You could have avoided that awful situation if you had kept your mouth shut and yet, now that you were looking at Dream, regret was not a predominant feeling.
"Talk to him. Convince him. That is all I ask."
You blinked in confusion. "I'm sorry?"
The one concerned was just a few inches away, yet the man spoke as if the Endless couldn’t hear him, nor understand his words at all.
“What makes you think he will even listen to me?”
Mr. Burgess stood from the wheelchair, unstable on his legs, to slowly take your hand in his. “Look, Miss Y/LN, I’m not asking you to do this for free. I will pay you for your service, twice the monthly amount I’m already giving you, in fact.”
What…?
“Think about your father. With a similar amount of money, you wouldn’t need to worry about the costs of modern medicine anymore.”
Your heart cracked and you slowly removed your hand from his weak grasp. “That’s a low blow, Mr. Burgess.”
“She’s right Alex,” Mr. McGuire intervened. “Please dear, just let her be.”
But Alex didn’t want to see reason. He moved closer to the glass sphere for support, pleading you with newly formed tears that threatened to spill. “I’m begging you. Please, just give it a try… I’m too old and tired to continue with this. I assure you that I want him to be free, more than anything else in the world. He knows that.”
He seemed genuinely intent on letting Dream go, but the fear of seeing the action backfiring against him and his husband was preventing him from doing the right thing. How were you supposed to play along, go down into the cellar solely to extort an imprisoned God, even earning money for such a shameful act? He didn’t utter a single word in over a century, was Alex really expecting the Endless to talk to you, a perfect stranger, as you could only chatter nonesense through a barrier magically keeping him stuck and restrained?
When you didn't respond, the man sighed once more. “It’s getting late now and we all need to rest. Come, we will discuss this again later.”
Paul muttered a soft “I’m sorry” when he walked past your frozen form, Alex now back onto the wheelchair, exhausted and disheartened. You stayed there for a moment longer, glancing at the man in the bowl with panic rising inside of you. He continued to look straight at your soul from under his long lashes, silent and unperturbed. You felt captivated, entranced, eager to break the glass and let him out.
But you couldn’t do that, you knew you couldn’t.
So you looked away, lowering your head and turning on your heels, walking fast to reach the elevator. You peaked over your shoulder one last time before going, Dream of the Endless was sitting motionless into the cage, his eyes never leaving you as you went up.

End notes: This chapter is set around three months before Morpheus escapes, in 2022 (again, based on the Netflix show) and we have already reached the second month. In case you are wondering if Reader will set him free, the answer is no. I plan to keep things as canon as possible, so everything will take place as originally scripted (although she may try something eventually).
Also, Reader is human, but she appears to be a very sensitive one. The 'gut thing' she experienced about the basement is in fact a recurrent event in her life.

I’d like to know where the Maxlings came from
Oh hell yeah I’d love to tell!! ok so I had the concept planned as a comic initially but it really got away from me and got too long for me to actually make, so what I’ve got is sort of a script-lookin thing that I would have used as framework for it. I hope that’s an ok format?? I considered trying to write it into more of a prose/fic format but honestly I like it best like this. Ok enough rambling I hope it’s funny to y’all lmao (also it got. Um. Very long)
First scene is in the middle of a beautiful glade deep in the woods, where Sam and Max are dancing in a crowd of magical-looking fairies, grinning at each other. It’s late and there are fairy lights (teehee) illuminating the area, tables of food and drink scattered around the outskirts of the crowd.
S: wow, quite the day we’ve had, eh little pal?
M: you can say that again, Sam! I mean, how often do you get to save an ancient fairy commune by beating up their evil warlock oppressor?
S: and on top of that they throw this little shindig in our honor! I have to say, I never knew lutes could play such great club music.
M: and I’m living for these hors d’oeuvres! We simply must get the recipe.
Behind them, a pair of fairies in big leafy crowns talk quietly.
Fairy queen: these strangers are so delightfully mischievous.
Other fairy queen (they are lesbians): quite! Truly a pair of mortals after our own hearts. How should we reward them for defeating our fell foe?
FQ 1: hmm…I have an amusing idea. What’s better than two chaos-causing mortals?
FQ 2: ahhh, I see! A marvelous idea!
The queens approach Sam and Max, with several other smiling fairies clustered around.
FQ 2: well, my friends, it has been a true pleasure to have you! Before you depart, my queen and I have a gift for you as thanks for defeating the dreaded warlock Snivellion.
(M: tee hee)
FQ 1: here, please take these.
She hands Max a little package made of leaves and tied with twine.
FQ 1: these magical seeds will grow into a wonderful gift if you keep them warm and safe.
M: well, we don’t have the best record with houseplants…
S: but we’ll happily accept your gift anyway! I’m sure they’ll be fun for the few minutes they manage to survive in the harsh climate of our office.
M: if they live through the trip back in my pocket, that is.
FQ 2: oh, trust me, I’m sure they will be every bit as hardy as the two of you.
Max stuffs the leaf packet in his inventory and he and Sam take their leave, waving to the fairies as they go.
S: so long now! Have fun partying eternally!
M: you know, we never did get introduced—don’t suppose I could get your names?
FQ 1: hah, nice try. Fare thee well, mortals!
FQ 2: farewell!
As they go, we see a shot of Max’s inventory, with his gun and maybe a hammer or something to show that’s what it is. The leaf package sits quietly for a moment, before releasing a tiny sprout.
Several months later…
Sometime in the dead of night, they’re both sleeping until Max stirs and sits up with his ears all lopsided, looking kinda disgruntled and tired.
M: I’m gonna go take a dump
S, not quite asleep yet and regretting it: you don’t have to tell me every time. I actually think I’d rather if you didn’t.
M: but what if I fall in? I’d want you to know what I was doing! :D
S: *half-asleep grumbling*
Max wanders off to the bathroom to perch on the can and read a magazine.
M: oh, Martha, you get me. Mostly because we’ve both been to the slammer
Suddenly a baby wail echoes from the toilet (thank you, mammalian diving reflex) and Max immediately screams, flings his magazine to parts unknown and runs for the hills.
M: Sam!! SAM!!! The toilet screamed at me!!!! I think that ill-advised bathroom exorcism we did instead of cleaning the shower drain didn’t work, we must’ve summoned some kind of toilet ghost instead!!
S: what are you talking about, numbskull? You interrupted a perfectly good dream I was having about a discontinued ice cream bar :(
M: just come help me get rid of it! I can’t go with some spectral peeping Tom shrieking at me!
They get to the bathroom and Max hovers by the door as Sam inspects the toilet.
S: Max, you cotton-brained dolt, there’s no ghosts in—GREAT GALLOPING GEYSERS TAP DANCING ON SATURN’S FURTHEST MOON!
He immediately reaches in to save the weird little wet rat almost glaring accusingly at him from the bowl (it could glare a little better if its eyes were functional yet). Max cringes at him.
M: Jesus, Sam, I know we’re both nasty, but I thought we agreed to leave this level of grossness to me! Wait what the fuck is that thing.
S: well, if my outdated recollection of mammalian biology and your horrifying baby pictures is correct, then I’d say it kind of looks like a neonatal lagomorph. Did…did this come out of you?
M: oh please, I think I’d know if I had something like that stashed away somewhere in here. (Vaguely gestures to himself) Now could you get outta the way? If it was just some weird naked rat that crawled up the toilet to yell at me and not a ghost, then I’d like to finish my business in here.
Sam stares at the little rat-looking baby. It has teeth. Teeth like Max’s. He grabs a towel out of the bathroom closet instead and tosses it in the bathtub, then nabs Max by the scruff of his neck and deposits him on top of it.
S: why don’t you just wait down here for a minute while I get this little thing cleaned up?
M: Sam what the hell I don’t need to be housebroken!! Ugh fine but you’re cleaning the towel if—oh my god there’s another one.
S: SWEET SAINT OLGA OF KIEV SINGING OPERA FOR AN AUDIENCE OF PUPPETS WITH A TIN FOIL SUIT AND TIE AND A CREAMED CORN CROWN
Several escaped kits later…
Sam and Max lie together in bed with the kits on top of them, all wiggling around and squeaking faintly. Sam looks vaguely shaken by the experience, but Max just kinda looks like it’s totally normal.
M: haha I thought you guys were just weird little turds! Well, aren’t all children though, come to think of it
S: and you’re sure they came out of your inventory and not some hitherto unknown reproductive system of yours?
M: Sam, at this point I think I’d be able to tell if they’d been up my ass, don’t you?
S: well, sure, but also that’s not where—
M: and besides, my pocket snacks have been going missing all day and this totally explains it. Look, that one’s still got Cheeto dust all over her face!
Sam looks down at one of the girls, who is indeed very orange.
S: ooh. Let me just clean you up there, sweetheart.
He licks her clean gently. She squeaks in approval.
S: huh! What do you know, that really is Cheeto dust.
M: see, I told you so! I still have no idea how they could’ve gotten in there, though…I mean, they look brand new. And also a lot like us.
S: well, mostly like you.
M: nah, see, this one’s got little floppy ears! And lookit their tails, mine’s not long like that. Oh! And this one’s got your nose!! Oh, Sam, it’s so precious I could just squish her like an overripe tomato! …um, but I won’t, obviously.
S: personally, I find myself rather enamored with their tiny little toe beans. Just look at that! They’re so little…
They both giggle delightedly over the kits for a minute, before relaxing back into the pillows. It’s still the middle of the night and they’re both exhausted.
S: so…if we don’t know how they got there, and they don’t look like they could be anybody else’s…
M: 👀
S: I mean unless we want to take them to the vet to check for microchips or something…?
M: too late I’m already coming up with names and dreaming of all the bad words I’m gonna teach them
S: oh, good, so am I. I guess it doesn’t matter how they got there, then…but you really have to wonder…
Something like a half hour ago…
The kits are sitting in a little pile in the middle of Max’s inventory, the opened leaf package below them and Max’s gun leaning against the wall beside them (it’s bigger than they are). Lacey’s face is covered in Cheeto dust and there are a few remaining Cheeto crumbs scattered around them. They have a brief conversation of squeaks, translated into pictures.
Maisie: >:/ *exit sign, there isn’t an emoji for it but just draw one*❗️(she’s bored and she wants out)
Lacey and Crowbar: :o ???
Maisie starts crawling around determinedly until she comes across some kind of rift in reality, through which the toilet bowl is visible. But not to her, of course, because she can’t see just yet. She immediately plummets out of the rift with a tiny shriek, and her siblings react like :0 there’s silence for a second, before Crowbar squeaks and is translated to:
C: dare you to go after her
L: 👀
And that’s it!! Hdkhsshsg here’s hoping it’s at least a little amusing to y’all because it’s very funny to me for whatever reason hdjshsjhddhdjhfjd
Oh! And as a reward for sticking around here’s one of the other first drawings of them I ever did :’> they were very much inspired by @lillylunala’s drawings of Max as a baby if it isn’t obvious, which you should absolutely check out if you haven’t seen them bc my god she really nailed it heheheeee

Over the next month, a routine develops for Gar and you. A few days of the week, Gar finds himself hiding out in your room. You were right, Dick, Jason, and Rachel don’t tend to bother him when he’s in your room. And you actually did make a sign that reads ‘keep out, ☠️’ and hung it on your door. It’s double-sided so the other side just says your name. You flip it around when Gar comes to escape and he finds it equally fun and sweet.
At first, you’d watch a movie or two and talk about whatever was bothering Gar. He’s gotten better at talking about it and it’s been a lot of him talking about Caulder House and his own nightmares of the day with Trigon’s bullshit. You didn’t know he had nightmares, too and you wonder how he hides it so fucking well. You’re not nearly as good at it as he is and you worry about him. You never want Gar to turn as bitter and calloused as you are about the world. He’s too good.
But, after the month, the talking and movies turned into something more comfortable. Gar will bring in one of his video game consoles. You will play with him sometimes but other times, you just like to watch. Gar likes Resident Evil and that’s a game you definitely prefer to watch. And Gar has his own collection of comics. You turned them down at first with not being a huge fan of reading, but after reading over Gar’s shoulder a few times, you got into The Walking Dead comics. Apparently, reading comics is a lot easier than reading a book. So, now it’s turned into Gar playing video games and you sitting with your legs on his lap, reading one of his comics in a comfortable silence, a joke here and there thrown around.
Training has also been going well for you. Your hands have healed and so have the rest of your injuries. You keep up well with Gar and Rachel now, the extra training sessions with Jason and Gar have helped significantly. And you’ve picked up knife throwing again, something you learned back in Gotham from one of the street kids you used to run with. You’re rusty and not a sharpshooter by any means, but it’s something. It eases some of the tension you feel in your shoulders.
When you can feel yourself wanting to lose it again because something brings back too many memories, you take Jason up on his offer to let you take it out on him. You’ll go for an extra sparring session sometimes, just the two of you and Jason helps you work through it without talking about it. It always makes you feel better and if you’re being honest, you really like the support system you have with the two boys. It’s something you never thought you’d have after your mom died but every day you’re so grateful for the two of them and even for Dick because he brought you here. That’s something you have no idea how you’ll ever be able to thank him for.
It’s a morning session now though and you’re in the training room with Gar and Jason while Rachel and Dick are out getting coffee. Dick has this bright idea to start blindfolding all of you to train because you can lose any of your senses at any time and you need to be prepared. Jason, of course, is really taking that to the next level by making Gar not have a blindfold while he does and making you sit out.
“Why do I have to sit out for this?” You fake-whine from one of the benches while Jason ties his blindfold behind his head and Gar stands in front of him looking bored.
“Because you have that combat shit. It defeats the purpose.” Jason snips back.
“Well, I don’t have to be blindfolded.” You mock him.
“Just shut up and watch us. Take some notes, you fucking need it.”
“Oh, shut the fuck up, Jay.” You groan, leaning back.
“When I give the word, come at me.” Jason says to Gar, holding his wooden sword out, ready to fight. “And don’t hold back.” He says, you rolling your eyes into the back of your head. Gar nods, looking bored and displeased with doing this. “Did you just nod?”
“Yeah, got it. Just, uh, don’t hold back.” Gar makes a jittered movement as if to be mocking Jason, you almost snicker from behind.
“Don’t kill each other please.”  You mock.
“Shut up, Y/n!” Jason groans, tilting his head back. He takes a second to breathe as he gets into position. “Go!” Jason yells.
Jason swings the sword at Gar, but Gar just hits it out of the way while Jason’s sword is an inch from his face. Gar’s eyes widen a bit in shock and amazed, looking back at you. You make the same expression, humming in response. Gar pushes the sword from his face taking a step forward with a swing at Jason, only for Jason to move out of the way in time and jabs his sword across the front of Gar’s chest. Gar waves a hand in front of Jason’s face, making sure he can’t see anything. Gar gives you a questionable look and all you can do is shrug your shoulder just as confused as he is. Surely, Jason has to be able to see him because this is just weird. Jason talks about your combat clairvoyance, maybe he needs to look in the mirror. Jason pulls his sword back, Gar takes a step back and then the real sparring begins.
Jason and Gar move around the mat, blocking each other quickly. It’s definitely a sight to see because Jason might as well not be wearing a blindfold. Gar can’t get a single hit in and barely dodges Jason’s jabs. It’s as if they’re doing this perfectly choreographed dance. It’s equally entertaining, impressive, and attractive. The two boys sparing is always a big heart-eye moment for you. But, somewhere along the way, Jason seems to have lost track of his rhythm, completely flipping away from Gar, giving Gar the perfect opportunity to bonk Jason on the head with his sword. You start laughing while Jason rips his blindfold off, spinning around to face Gar.
“Hey, fuck man.” Jason gasps at Gar, clearly annoyed.
“You said don’t hold back.” Gar defends, you getting up from your bench to join the boys.
“What were you doing? I was fucking blindfolded!” Jason yells.
“You told him to do it!” You defend Gar. “He just tapped you on the head, chill the fuck out.” You can’t believe he’s actually mad about this. It was his idea to not have Gar wear a blindfold.
“Stay out of it!” Jason snaps, turning his attention back to Gar.
“You said:” Gar starts before he, poorly, mimics Jason’s voice with the same jittered motion as before. “Don’t hold back.”
“Should I get the hose?” Rachel comes strolling in.
“What’s going on?” Dick asks, following right behind.
“Jason’s being a baby.” You quip, crossing your arms as you stand on the other side of Gar.
“Hey, fuck you!” Jason’s eyes nearly bug out of his head as he snaps at you, Gar moving to block Jason’s view of you. Jason leans further forward to see you. “You could have warned me! Or fucking helped instead of doing nothing!”
“You told me not to!” You scream at him. “You said no because I have the combat thing.” You mock his voice, with a grimace before Gar stands further in the way to block you from Jason. He’s not sure who he’s trying to block from the other really, Jason is beet red and you look like you might strangle him.
“Um, hello?” Dick states, waiting for one of you to answer his previous question.
“We did what you said,” Jason turns his attention Dick. “The blindfold thing then he went nuts on me.”
You groan loudly, putting your hands on your face in frustration.
“He said don’t hold back.” Gar repeats, this time his voice louder and higher pitched, the annoyance growing.
“Then why do we even learn to fight like this, man?” Jason argues, throwing his arms to the sides. “Hey, it’s idiotic.” He takes a step forward, pointing at his head with wide eyes, almost a crazed look in his eye. “We have eyes.”
“In battle, anything can be taken from you.” Dick’s voice is calm as he walks further onto the mat. “Your hands.” Dick says before quickly twisting Jason’s arm and grabbing the wooden sword from him, making it look effortless. He moves to Gar, quickly using the sword to strike at Gar, Gar blocking a few times before Dick gets the sword right between Gar’s feet, just missing him. “Your feet.” Dick swings the sword at you, the sword aimed just a few centimeters from hitting you right between the eyes. You take a step back, eyes widening and crossed as you look at the sword. He swings the sword at Rachel, doing the same gesture. “And your eyes.” He pauses before stepping back, and putting the sword down. “No matter what is taken, you must be able to keep fighting and win.” Dick faces the boys and you again. “Alright, get changed. Attack scenarios in the tech room in five minutes. Then breakfast.”
You, Gar, and Rachel don’t argue and instead, leave the training room without another word, leaving Jason behind with Dick. This is a pretty normal thing. When training doesn’t go exactly how Jason wants it to, which is normally that he doesn’t win all the time, he gets mad and blames everyone else for it. This time, it’s just that it was Gar who wasn’t blindfolded. It’s gotten a little worse over the last month, Gar and you are pretty sure he’s just stir-crazy from being at the tower and not having any real crime to fight. He’s probably bored of sparring with you and not being in Gotham so the two of you let it go easily.
“Why does Dick sound like Daniel Larusso?” You ask as the three of you head down the hallway.
Rachel lets out a chuckle. “He literally sounds like Mr. Miogi.”
“He says we watch too much TV, maybe he needs to stop watching the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai.” Gar laughs.
“Maybe he doesn’t know what to do so he’s looking to them for inspiration.” You jokes.
“Someone should tell him it doesn’t work like that.” Rachel adds in.
“Awww, but it’ll just break little Dicky’s heart.” You mock, placing your hands over your heart with a fake pout.
“Yeah, I’m looking to be on his shitlist.” Gar chortles as the three of you reach your rooms.
“He would never put you on his shitlist.” Rachel scoffs, Gar raising a brow at her.
“He’s taken you right on under his little batwing.” You add in.
You joke about Dick but over the last month he’s grown on you quite a bit. He’s really not so bad when you’re not making him mad. He’s kind of making it obvious that he really wants to make sure you’re all ready before he sends you out on some type of mission. He can also even be funny sometimes and partake in jokes. He’s even joined all of you for a movie night so he’s grown on you but you have to poke fun.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Gar questions, looking between you and Rachel.
Rachel and you look to each other from across the hall. You shrug. “Well, I think we mean he’s really nice to you and sees you as responsible.”
“Yeah,” Rachel nods in agreement. “You always do what he says, besides that one time.” Rachel looks to you.
“Which was my fault so Dick didn’t fault you and probably admires your ability to risk getting into trouble with him to protect me and Jason.” You explain. “And it was just sparring.”
“That’s not true.” Gar defends. “I don’t always listen to him.”
You and Rachel exchange another look. “When was the last time you didn’t do what he said?” Rachel asks.
Gar stands for a second, trying to remember the last time he didn’t listen to Dick and as he thinks about it, you both have a point. He does do what Dick says all the time, without even questioning him. It’s who he is though. He exactly like to disobey authority. Sneaking out behind the Chief's back was different, this is Dick. And, every time someone has went against what Dick has said, shit hits the fan so maybe Gar is onto something.
“Okay, that’s fair.” Gar chuckles, looking to the floor and back to the two of you.
“It’s not a bad thing.” Rachel reassures him. “We’ll never be in trouble.”
“It’s not that bad being on his shitlist.” You state. “But, yeah, it’s not a bad thing. It’s probably better to not have him mad, though it is very fucking funny sometimes.” You gain a sinister grin.
“Okay, don’t listen to y/n.” Rachel rolls her eyes with a sigh. “It’s not funny and it’s best for everyone to not piss him off.”
“I haven’t pissed him off in like a whole week, that’s a record.” You hold your head up high, Gar chuckling under his breath.
“You are proud of that, aren’t you?” Gar asks.
“Kind of.” You giggle. “No, but really, Rachel is right. It is better not pissing him off, he’s kind of cool when he’s not mad.”
“Yeah, I’m not looking to make him mad anyway.” Gar shakes his head. “You and Jason have that handled.”
“They are very good at it.” Rachel mutters.
“Teamwork.” You grin.
“Okay, get changed.” Rachel cuts the conversation. “Otherwise he will be mad because we’ll be late.”
“Yes, ma’am.” You joke, walking into your room, Gar following your lead and heads into his room.
Tumblr media
Later that night, the four of you found yourselves doing your own things. Gar and Jason made up while you found yourself in Rachel’s room. Rachel is sitting at her desk while you’re laying on Rachel’s bed, upside down with your head off the end of the bed, looking at Rachel. Usually, when the boys hang out, the two of you spend time together. You like to give Rachel shit for being Dick’s lap dog but you do like her and enjoy spending time with her. Rachel really likes having another girl around, the month she spent with boys was not the best. She loves them, besides Jason, but they’re a little much sometimes. Too much testosterone in one place for her liking.
“So, when do you think Dick will let us do something?” You ask, scrolling through your phone, keeping your head hanging off the end of the bed.
“Not you, too.” Rachel groans.
“What?” You question, moving your phone to get a better look at Rachel. Rachel just widens her eyes and raises her brows. “No, I mean, I’m just wondering. I’m not gonna go rogue again, I promise.” You roll your eyes, a smile coming to your lips.
“Mhm.” Rachel hums. “I don’t know. Do you really think we’re ready?”
“Oh, I mean I think I am.” You quip. “Ya know, given the track record.” You scoff. “Jason’s probably been ready in his entire life. You and Gar seem to be fine.”
“Yeah, but we don’t stand a chance against Dick even if it’s us four against him.”
“We could if he’d let us use our powers.” You wave your left hand at Rachel, your palm glowing green.
Rachel rolls her eyes. “I don’t have that kind of control, Y/n.”
“True,” You start, pulling yourself up and flipping around to lie on your stomach and face Rachel. “But, if he would let you use your powers maybe you’d gain some control.”
“That’s not how you did it, right?”
“No,” You scoff. “But, it’s probably different for you. You were born with them and your powers are clearly stronger than mine. Maybe not using them makes it worse.” You offer. “Your side.” Your words go hesitant.
Rachel’s eyes widen, surprise and a hint of panic consuming her face. “How did you--”
“Don’t freak out, but I saw them when we were sparring. I didn’t tell anyone or anything.” Your voice is nonchalant but understanding.
“Thank you.” Rachel’s voice is soft. “Can we not talk about it?”
“Sure.” You shrug. “What’d you wanna talk about?”
Rachel gains a cheeky smirk and you can already tell where this is going. “So…about the boys.” Rachel’s smile splits her face.
You let out a dramatic sigh. “Yes, Rachel?”
“What’s going on?” Rachel laughs.
“Whatever do you mean?” You play dumb, an innocent smile playing on your lips.
You know Rachel isn’t oblivious. You tend to flirt with both of them and you are almost always with at least one of them. Over the last month, it’s just become a little more obvious.
“Come on.” Rachel laughs. “Do you like either of them?”
Rachel is curious, sure but she sees how you flirt with Jason. It’s different with him than it is with Gar, anyone could see that. Gar is Rachel’s friend and while she likes you, she is kind of worried that you’re playing a game with the two of them. If you hurt Jason, fine, he’ll probably deserve it but not Gar.
“Hmmm.” You hum. “Oh, yeah.” You nod quickly.
“Which one?!”
“Both.” You state as if it were obvious.
“Right, okay.” Rachel nods, trying to wrap her head around someone actually liking Jason. Gar she completely understands but Jason? “Both of them?”
“I know, you’re really trying to not gag at Jason.” You laugh. “He’s, ya know, a smartass and hot and shockingly funny.” You neglect to include every nice thing Jason has said to you and done for you, something you like to keep like a secret. “And Gar, well, I don’t think I need to explain Gar.”
“Okay, so what are you gonna do about it?” Rachel asks. “A love triangle.” Rachel has a teasing grin with her words.
You grimace. “Ewww, I hate love triangles.” You groan. “I know what you’re gonna say, but humor me and tell me what you think.”
“Well,” Rachel leans forward, resting her elbows on her thighs, hands holding her head. “Fuck Jason,” Rachel starts, getting an eyebrow raise and a devious grin from you. “Not literally, oh my gosh.” Rachel rolls her eyes as you chortle. “He’s an asshole to everyone, including you.” Rachel argues against Jason.
“Right, yeah, but he is also nice to me and I’m also kind of an asshole to him.” You defend with the scrunch of your nose.
“Yeah, but today, you didn’t even do anything and he was throwing a fit because you did what he asked.”
“Okay,” You nod tilting your head to the right. “That’s a fair point, actually. Continue.” You put your elbow to the bed, using one hand to hold your head up.
“He calls us freaks.”
“I think Jason thinks everyone is a freak though.” You state.
“Maybe, but it’s still hurtful.” Rachel argues.
“Doesn't really bother me." You shrug casually. "Also, fair though.” You nod in agreement.
“He didn’t stop you from going to Jerry’s which was a bad thing, Y/n.” Rachel points a finger at you, disapproval on her face.
“But he didn’t let me go alone, Rachel.” You mimic her actions.
“But, but,” Rachel starts. “Gar would have tried to stop you and went with you if you were still insistent on it.”
“Wait, how did you know Jason didn’t try to stop me?" You furrow your brows, putting your hand back down.
“No one believes he tried to stop you.” Rachel laughs.
“Alright, you’ve got me there.” You state. “But, you have to give me one pro to Jason otherwise it sounds too biased.”
Rachel pauses trying to think of something good to say about Jason. She actually didn’t hate him originally. She kind of liked him actually but after the whole Trigon situation, he’s been pretty nasty to her. They can get along and be civil of course, but when Jason’s mad, Rachel tends to be the person he’s the most mean to and Rachel has grown to think he’s too entitled and too arrogant. Neither of them have actually bothered to have a conversation about any of it or figure out how they can get along better.
“I am biased.” Rachel laughs, not able to come up with anything. “He’s just so,” Rachel grimaces. “He hates me for no reason.”
“I meeeaaannnn….” You wince.
“What? Did he say something?” Rachel leans forward and if you know something, she is all ears.
“No, but it’s not that hard to figure out from where I’m sitting.” Your eyes go a little wide and you’re surprised Rachel hasn't figured it out.
“Well, tell me! I don’t like that he hates me.”
You pause and for a second you debate saying anything. It's not really your place. But, Jason also hasn't told you why he hates Rachel. This is just you putting all of the pieces together. Rachel is your friend anyway and it would be a lot easier if the two of them got along so, you decide to tell Rachel what you think.
“Okay, from where I’m sitting, it seems like he hates you and thinks you’re a freak because he was possessed, right? Seems like the issues that surround you guys is because of that night, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, Gar is a bit…wishy-washy about Dick. He listens to him maybe a little too much sometimes. He’s protective of you, sure, but he’s a different kind of protective when it comes to you. Jason….hates you. I’m just saying, all of you have that night in common, right?” You ask and Rachel nod. “And how was Jason when you first met him?”
“Fine, he was…Jason.” Rachel laughs softly. “Cocky, charming in his weird way, a bit braggy about Robin but kind of funny.”
“Okay and he was chill with you, right?”
“Yeah.”
“So, what happened between Chicago and Trigon?”
“He helped Dick with something and Dick sent him back to Gotham. He showed up at my mom’s with Dawn and Hank, Trigon was there already.” Rachel explains plainly.
“Mhm, and you and Gar were?” You gesture a palm out, moving it in front of you.
“Trying to escape.” Rachel furrows her brows, still completely following.
“Okay, so follow me: Jason gets sent to help Dick by Bruce because Jason is following in Dick’s footsteps as the new Robin. He’s a shiny new Gotham toy. He helps Dick just long enough for Dick to not be interested in getting to know the kid who’s taking over for him because Dick quit and sends him back to Gotham but Dick keeps you and Gar around, right? Two kids he, otherwise, has no relation to. At least Dick and Jason were taken in by Bruce and have Robin in common so they are, actually, like brothers. But, you’re just some kid who found Dick and Dick decided that was good enough for him to bring you under his wing and then Gar got to tag along and neither of you were sent back to where you came from, just Jason despite Jason offering his help.” You explain, speaking with your hands.
“Right, okay.” Rachel nods along.
“So, fast forward, and Jason shows up to help again. Only this time, instead of helping he gets possessed and starts trying to kill his best friend. He nearly beats his best friend to death because this random ass girl Dick plucked off the streets has a demon dad. THEN, because none of that was enough, none of that was good enough for Bruce and Bruce sent him here to be with, the older brother who didn’t want him in the first place and he gets to be with the person who his brother chose over him and got him possessed.” You finish your explanation.
“Uh…” Rachel pauses, blinking slowly trying to process everything. “I…I didn’t think about any of that. How did you even figure that out?” Rachel knows you and Jason are close but she didn't expect you to have this long explanation that seems to make sense.
“Yeah, I mean I get it. It happened to you, too. You were front and center. It’s not always easy seeing that kind of stuff when you’re in it. But, that’s just what I can gather from it. Jason seems to be someone who needs attention and just wants to know he’s doing a good job.” You sway your head back and forth slightly. "Gar's talked about it and Jason mentioned it which, when Jason mentions something like that, I think it bothers him at least a little bit."
“Okay, so what should I do? I really don’t want to hate him and fight with him all the time.”
“You could talk to him.” You state as if it's the most obvious answer in the world.
“Because that’ll go over so well.” Rachel mutters.
“No, you let him just talk his shit. Go on his little rant and swear fest that he does. He’ll call you a freak. He’ll just rant for like five minutes or whatever and then you apologize. Even if you don’t want to, you apologize to him and then he’ll feel obligated to apologize to you and then you can have a conversation about it. You just have to let him blow his steam.”
“You really get him, don’t you?”
“Trauma bonding will do that.” You chuckle. “As I said, sometimes being an outsider is easier. I didn’t know all that bullshit or what happened before. Plus, we do have Gotham in common.”
“So, I should just talk to him.”
“Yep. It really is that simple with him.” You let out a sigh as you nod. "He is not that complicated."
“Okay, I’ll give it a shot.” Rachel leans back in her chair. “Okay, I have something good to say.” Rachel states and you gesture a hand out, encouraging her to proceed. “He talks to you and he’s honest with you. And if he talks to you, I think that means he understands you like you do him. So, that's three for Jason.” Rachel gives you a proud smile.
You laugh “Yeah, he is and he does understand, actually.” You nod softly. “You may pitch your case for Gar now if you want.”
“For starters, he is cute!” Rachel squeals without missing a beat. “His green hair,”
“Looks so good on him!” You mimic the squeal.
“Yeah! And he is so protective and kind, to everyone even people who aren’t so great. He’s open and brave.” Rachel’s face softens. “He seems to make you feel comfortable.”
The corner of your mouth twitches into a soft smile. “Yeah, he smells like strawberries.” You laugh softly. “He does make me feel really comfortable, and safe. I feel like I don’t have to worry about anything. Um…one of my first nights, I had a nightmare and I thought Jerry was in the tower. He held my hand and searched the tower with me, knowing Jerry wasn’t around but he never made it weird or made me feel bad about it. He just…did it.”
There’s a warm smile that comes to Rachel’s face. “Hey, Y/n.”
“Hm?”
“I think you have an answer.” Rachel laughs softly. “If you really wanna go for Jason, that’s fine. I will never get it but if it makes you happy, I get it. But, you didn’t have that kind of thing to say about Jason and you got all soft about Gar.”
You pause because you do have similar stories to say about Jason. Jason still reads to you and he still lets you take out your aggression and feelings on him without ever questioning it. He was there through you beating up Jerry in the best way he could have been but you can’t tell Rachel that. You know Jason doesn’t want to be seen as soft for anyone, not with his friends anyway, and those things feel like little secrets between you. They’re like little passwords into your friendship that only you two have. It’s your things. Just yours and you’d really like to keep it that way. So, you have to shrug and nod along. You do really like Gar, you aren’t arguing that anyway. But, you do wish Rachel could see the Jason Todd you are so fond of. It’s not fair that Jason doesn’t even have a fair shot in a conversation like this. He deserves some type of fairness.
“I don’t know if I should do anything about it anyway.” You let out a sigh of defeat.
“What? Why though? You like them and it’s pretty obvious they like you, too.”
You shake your head. “I like how it is. If I decide to tell either of them I like them and something comes of that, it might ruin stuff with the other one and I don’t wanna ruin anything. I think the both of them have had too much ruined in their lives.”
Rachel shakes her head. “If you want to go for Gar, you should talk to Jason first. All jokes aside, I see how he looks at you and I see how he treats you when you guys think no one is looking. I don’t actually think you liking Gar will ruin it.”
Your brows furrow with Rachel's comment. The way Jason looks at you? You didn't think Jason really looked at you any kind of way. But, it's interesting because Jason is still relatively guarded. Easy to figure out when it comes to the trauma and figuring out why he is the way he is but everything else, he has this ten-story wall up. He'd probably combust if he knew Rachel saw him looking at you in any kind of way. But, it's something that warms your heart and makes you smile.
“You think so?” You ask, your face soft.
“Completely unbiased and actually thinking decently of Jason, yes.” Rachel gives you a reassuring nod. “Do you like Gar more though?”
Your cheeks start to burn. “I don’t know. I think so because it’s just…different with him. It doesn’t feel like a game with him.” You scoff. “I am endlessly afraid I’ll ruin him though.”
“What do you mean?” Rachel’s voice goes sad.
“He’s been through so much and so have I but he finds it in himself to be there for everyone, all the time. He seems to be accepting of everything that’s happened to him and I’m so afraid that I’ll never be that and I’ll just….ruin him with my pessimism and bitterness.” Your eyes go sad with the last statement.
Rachel wheels her chair over to you. “You can’t ruin him. He’s Gar.” Rachel gives you a soft smile. “He’s a lot stronger than you think. I think he’d do anything for you.” Rachel puts her hand over yours. “I saw the way he stepped between you and Jason today. He knows you can handle yourself but he did it anyway, I don’t even think he noticed that he did. You won’t ruin him.”
“Thanks, Rachel.”
“You guys would also just be super cute.” Rachel gosh.
“Oh my gosh.” You hang your head with a laugh.
You feel a little better getting to talk about it with Rachel. You would never bring it up on your own. Talking about your romantic feelings is not something you like to drown people with. And you feel bad for liking both boys. It’s not your fault, but there’s a guilt that echoes in your stomach when you think too long about it. Talking to Rachel though, helped.
You adore Jason. You adore who he is when no one else is around. But, maybe that’s the thing. Jason is different people around different people. You don’t know if he’d ever be able to be the person who he is in private with you publicly. You don’t want to play a guessing game with him. It’s too much for you, right now. But, with Gar, Gar is just who he is. Sure, he censors himself sometimes but everyone knows exactly how Gar feels about everything and knows what he likes and what he doesn’t. He’s transparent. He is comfortable in the best sense of the word. He makes you so happy and he never makes you mad. He makes your stomach twist with knots and bubbles. You swear you could never stay sad as long as you’re around Gar.
But, despite what Rachel said, it scares you that maybe your trauma could be the straw that breaks him. People can only take so much and he’s been through it all. What happens if dealing with all your shit, in a romantic way, breaks him? You would never forgive yourself for it.
A knock sounds on Rachel’s door, Rachel telling them to come in. And speaking of Gar, he walks in with two plates containing a slice of pizza on each plate. He’s all smiles as he walks in.
“I thought you guys might be hungry.” Gar offers the plates out to the two of you.
“Thanks, Gar.” You take one of the plates from him and this is a perfect example of why you like him. Always so caring and attentive to other people.
Rachel takes the other plate. “Thanks.” Rachel offers him a smile.
You take a bite and wince, Rachel eyeing you and then her own slice of pizza. You chew slowly, giving Rachel a thumbs up while Gar holds back a laugh. Rachel’s eyes narrow slightly as she takes a bite. Immediately, Rachel winces, pausing her chewing and you let out a laugh as you choke down your bite.
“It’s so bad.” You laugh.
“Who made this?” Rachel asks before spitting out the piece into the trash.
“Dick did.” Gar explains, laughing with you both. “The crust is made out of cauliflower.”
“Gross.” You grimace.
“Why would somebody do that?” Gar asks, the laughing subsiding as if he’s grieving for the pizza that could have been.
“If we hate eating, then we have more time to train.” Rachel says.
“Because he’s losing his mind.” You’re still grimacing about the pizza. The pizza never did anything to Dick and yet, he did this.
“Okay, so it’s not just me. He’s totally obsessed, right?”
“Like I said, Daniel Larusso.” You state.
"He just wants to make sure we're ready." Rachel sighs.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Gar chuckles softly. “What’re you guys doing anyway?”
“Talking shit.” You wink at him, Gar’s posture stiffening and you do love making him squirm.
“Just talking.” Rachel laughs softly.
Gar nods slowly. “Right, okay.” He clears his throat. “Movie night?” Gar asks.
You look to Rachel, a cheeky smile on display. “I’m always down for a movie night. Rachel?”
“Of course, we can make some popcorn since the pizza is a bust.” She laughs softly.
The three of you head to the living room, you and Rachel tossing your pizza slices into the trash in the kitchen before joining Gar in the living room. When you get to the couch, Jason and Dick are watching the TV, eyes glued to the screen. You sit next to Gar, following his stare on the screen while Rachel sits on the ottoman.
A police chase ensues on screen, Dick almost blocking the entire TV as he stands watching with his arms crossed like a dad in his fifties.
"We're live at a downtown car chase featuring a stolen vehicle. Police now seem to have the suspect cornered." One of the news reporters says as footage from the top of a parking garage shows a black car surrounded by cop cars.
As all of you watch from the tower, a girl with grey hair gets out of the car and without hesitation, starts beating up the cops. You watch in a state of awe and shock. Whoever that person is, they are very ballsy. Jason leans his elbows on his knees, getting this cheeky half-cocked smirk as he watches.
"Who the hell is that?" Rachel asks.
"Someone who has no self-preservation." You mutter.
"A total badass." Jason gawks at the screen.
Your heart sinks a bit with the comment. Other people can be a badass, that's not it. It's the way he's looking at the screen. His eyes are wide and he's in such a state of awe, it reminds you of the look he gave you after you beat up Jerry, after the initial shock of it. He's got a thing for violence, clearly and maybe it hurts a little but you will never admit that. Instead, you keep watching as the girl continues to beat up the cops, taking down every one of them who comes at her.
"The suspect does appear to be female. She's got silver hair. She does seem to be injured. We're not sure how badly." The news reporter says as the girl looks directly at the camera from the helicopter, her eye left covered with bloody gauze.
She is very pretty.
"Wait for it. We're not sure where she thinks she's going." The news reporter says as the girl runs to the car she 'stole' and leaps off the building.
Your jaw nearly drops as you watch. On second thought, Jason might have a point. That's pretty badass. Who just jumps off a parking garage? She's either crazy or knows something no one else does. It's impressive. Gar looks worried about the girl though and Rachel just looks shocked. Jason, on the other hand, is almost matching the expression on your face but with a bit more awe and infatuation.
"I'll be back." Dick says without looking back and just walks right to the elevator.
"Okay, what the fuck did we just witness?" You ask, looking around the room.
"Someone scared for their life, probably." Rachel says softly.
"A badass kicking cops' asses! It was awesome." Jason cheers.
"I'm with Rachel." Gar adds. "She didn't look badass, she looks scared." Gar glares at Jason.
"It was still awesome." Jason defends.
"Think Dick is going to find her?" You question, ignoring the back and forth between the other three.
Without a second thought, Gar closes his eyes and nods while Rachel and Jason say yes in unison.
"He has a thing for strays." Gar says quietly.
"Noticed." You laugh softly as you look down to your lap, a somber expression coming to your face.
"You guys still down for the movie?" Jason changes subject, sitting back in his seat. Rachel is the only one who catches the look Jason gives you. It's subtle, but his eyes linger on you just a second too long and his jaw clenches just slightly while his eyes soften just a little.
You shrug. "Might as well."
Gar and Rachel agree, Rachel moving to sit on the other side of you. It's Gar's turn to pick a movie. He chooses Back To The Future, a true classic. The three of you sit back and start to enjoy the movie together. You think about if Dick finds this girl. Will it change the dynamic? You’re actually really comfortable here and you enjoy where your friends are with everyone. If Dick brings someone else in, will that change? Of course, you knew you wouldn't be the last stray Dick brought home but it's weird with the potential to not be the new person.
Just as the movie ends, the elevator brings Dick up. The four of you all rush over to see if he found the girl who leaped from a parking garage. All four of you stand and watch the doors open, Dick carrying the girl who's unconscious. Gar, Jason, and Rachel jump into action to help but you step aside. It's not that he found her and you’re worried about the situation. It's that you wonder if this is what it was like when Dick brought you back. Everyone comes to see the new person, wonders if she's okay, who she is, and where she came from. What she is. It feels too real and it brings back every bad thought you had prior to being in the tower.
It feels too exposed and you remember how terrifying it was that first day. Surrounded by new people you didn't know if you could trust but having nowhere else to go. That, in and of itself, was also traumatizing even though it worked out for the best and you love it here. It was just scary so you stand back as Dick asks to Gar to come with him since Gar has some experience with injuries from staying at Caulder House.
"Hey, you okay?" Rachel asks seeing your distant expression.
"Huh?" You shake your head, almost not catching Rachel talking. "Sorry, yeah." You nod quickly.
"What? Scared you're gonna be replaced or something?" Jason jokes. His tone is his usual sarcastic, airy tone he uses when he's just trying to mess around. Not even a flirt, just joking but it strikes a nerve a little.
"Fuck you, Jason." You bark at him.
Rachel's even taken aback by the remark. This is what the two of you do and you’re the only one that fires back. Rachel expected you to say something about Jason being replaced but that's not it. And Jason is completely shocked, almost frozen in place. He was just joking and he knows you know that.
"Okay, fuck you." Jason snips. "It was a fucking joke."
"Well, maybe I'm not in a fucking joking mood, dude." You roll your eyes before storming off towards your room.
Jason stands for a second, looking at Rachel for help. "Did you guys have a fight or something?" Rachel asks, thinking you didn't because surely you would have mentioned that when you were weighing the pros and cons of the boys.
"Not that I know off." Jason scoffs. "Did you?" Jason's voice turns accusatory.
"What? No!" Rachel defends. "She was fine when we were hanging out."
Jason sucks in a breath. "Alright then." He shrugs, trying to play it off as if it's not bothering him but Rachel can see through it. Gar is helping Dick anyway.
"Just go talk to her." Rachel rolls her eyes, her words reluctant.
She's rooting for you and Gar. You're softer and cuter. Rachel, as your friend, is worried that if you decide you like Jason more and want to see where that goes, it won't end anywhere but in shambles. It's more than just Rachel and Jason not getting along. It's that Jason is a walking fuckboy. He's the dangerous rebel parents warn their teenagers not to date because they'll get in trouble and get their hearts broken. Maybe Rachel thinks too little of Jason but with Gar, she's sure Gar wouldn't hurt you, ever. But, you’re her friend and Jason at least understands you better than anyone. She isn't going to get in the way of that.
"You're her friend." Jason holds his head up, as if trying not to let on how he's definitely going to your room when Rachel leaves.
"So are you?" Rachel narrows her eyes at him. "I'm gonna go to my room and wait for Gar to be done, you talk to Y/n." Rachel nods once at him before turning and heading towards her own room.
Jason waits until Rachel's door closes and then he goes straight to your room. He thinks he's coy but he's almost as transparent as Gar is. Jason isn't subtle even when he's trying to be. Rachel isn't blind. She sees the way he watches you. Both of the boys do. Rachel has caught Dick nearly choking and grimacing at the three of you with your flirty jokes. But, to Jason, it's like he exists in a tinted bubble where no one can see any of it.
"Come in." You call out as you’re laid on your back on your bed, staring at the ceiling.
Jason opens the door, walking in and shutting the door behind him slowly. "How did you--"
"I heard Rachel shut her door, figured you were behind her." You don't look at him, just keep your stare on the ceiling.
"Alright, well what the fuck was that out there? I was just fucking with you like always." Jason huffs, sticking his hands in his pockets.
"It was just weird." You mutter.
Jason walks to the foot of your bed before plopping beside you, laying in the same position. His arm brushes yours as he turns his head to look at you and then back at the ceiling. The ceiling is white and boring, a stark contrast to the decorating you’ve done to your room. There are sketches across the walls you did with Dick's permission. Movie posts for some of your favorite movies are hanging sporadically on the walls. Your shelves have Funko Pops from some of your favorite shows. A few snacks sit on your nightstand. The room is yours, it's a home within a home but the ceiling is a sterile white, cold compared to the rest of your room.
"Like..." You pause. "Is that what it was like when he brought me back?" You ask, looking at Jason.
Jason looks back at you, your eyes about as welcoming as a hurricane. "Yeah." He answers honestly. "It was weird. You looked dead, though." Jason looks away from you, not able to hold eye contact.
It was weird when Dick brought you back, worse than weird. Dick went out to run an errand and then when he came back, he had a burn and you who literally looked dead. You were covered in bruises and cuts. You were limp and lifeless, without even knowing you, Jason is positive it broke everyone's hearts to see you. It didn't matter if you had powers or if you could fight, you needed help. It was one of the moments since Bruce sent him to train with Dick that he really viewed Dick in a different light, kind of like a hero without the mask (not that he will ever admit that). He just helped this random girl off the streets despite the fact you burned him. It was different. It was sad and scary.
"Gee, thanks, Jay." You roll your eyes, looking back to the ceiling.
Jason sighs, sitting up and turning to lean on his elbow, looking at you. "Look, I'm saying it was fucking freaky when he brought you here because you were really hurt." Jason explains and you catch a hint of sadness in his eyes. "And fucked up." Jason adds in. "He asked for Gar's help then, too. You know the rest, I guess. Gar wouldn't tell us what was going on with you."
"Why?" You ask.
Jason wrinkles his face. "Because you were fucked up."
"Fair." You nod before you let out a sigh. "I just hope she's okay, ya know?" You say. "It's like...seeing it just felt so fucking weird but I hope whatever happened wasn't too traumatizing. It made me....mad again. I haven't been mad like that since Jerry."
Jason nods with understanding. Seeing you like that, it was worrisome. You’ve got a fire and that’s why Jason finds you fun but, it’s how it went. It doesn’t matter that Jerry deserved it and you deserved to get revenge. You didn’t feel better afterwards because it didn’t erase what happened. And Jason doesn’t want you to ever feel that way again. He was the only one that was there for it.
"Wanna work it out?" He gains a smirk.
You decide to challenge him now. He came to check on you and just that bit of talking did make you feel a little better. It's not about being replaced. You know Dick won't replace any of you. It's just a bit triggering being on the other side of it this time. But talking with Jason helps.
"Work it out how?" You match his position, making your faces closer.
Jason's voice hitches in his throat. "However you want, babe."
The term babe is something he's grown accustomed to using when he's messing with you. To you, that's all it is. He's using it to get under your skin because it works. He gains this cheeky, taunting grin of accomplishment every single time he says it because you squirm in your seat. Your heart always skips a beat with the pet name. It's always this mix of wanting him to shut the fuck up and wanting to hear it in a way that's not him just messing with you, but like he means it. And you never know what to do about it.
"Shut up." You roll your eyes, pulling away. "You know what I mean, shithead."
"I call you babe, you call me shithead, huh?" Jason chortles, tilting his head to the right.
"If the shoe fits, BaBe." You mock, leaning in again, eyes wide and you see it for the first time.
Jason squirms and suddenly, you completely understands why he calls you it. It's the way his face brightened but his eyes shot open like a deer in headlights. It's the way he jerked his head back and you could visibly see him hold his breath for a second. It's a little funny and it's really cute.
"No, you can't use my thing against me!" Jason yells, a smile tugging at his lips with burning cheeks.
"Hmm, too late." You give him a confident smile before sitting all the way up.
He's fun. He's fun to mess with but you’re not sure if there's anything more than there. You aren't sure if you like him because he's hot and because he's fun or if there's something below the surface. He is this unknown iceberg that you’re trying to navigate around in the dark. There is always more than what's on the surface but you can't see how much. You can't tell if what you do goes more than a foot under the water or if it's nearly touching the ocean floor. The only way to know is to dive in, following the rugged surface as far as you can, risk drowning. Maybe some risks aren't worth taking.
"Get changed, meet you in the training room in twenty minutes." Jason sits up and gets up off the bed, a sadness filling his heart but in a way, accepting that it'll never be him.
He sees the way you look at Gar. He sees the way you and Gar are and how it's always more than a joke and maybe if Jason cooled it down and was just real with you in a normal situation, you could have that, too. If he could just, throw the sarcasm overboard in a normal situation, he could dive in with you. But, he's never been a very good diver.
"Yes, sir." You give him a fake pout and Jason narrows his eyes, the pounding in his chest, echoing through his ears. All he can do is roll his eyes at you before heading out to his own room to change.
You and Jason get changed and you head out of your room first. When you reach the kitchen, Rachel is grabbing a snack. You ask if Jason has been by yet but apparently he hasn't so you sit down to talk with Rachel while you wait. While you wait, Gar comes walking in from the other hallway, clearly done with whatever he was doing with Dick and then Jason walks in as if everyone were on cue. The four of you decide you'll all train together since you're actually due for a training session again anyway. But, before you can get going, you hear the sound of shoes. The four of you peek around the corner of the kitchen to see the new girl trying to sneak out of the tower. All four of you follow her to the elevator, staying back while Dick comes in from the other hallway.
"Going somewhere?" Rachel asks as the elevator denies the girl access to leave.
The girl turns around as Dick steps forward. "We need to talk." Dick says, the girl glaring at him with the one eye that’s not covered.
Dick sends the four of you off to the training room while Dick talks with the new girl. The four of you spar for a little while, making little to no conversation between you. The four of you are mostly just wasting time until you can find out what Dick and the new girl talked about and what's going on. You all have mixed emotions about it but all four of you are curious and intrigued. So, you train for an hour until you and Rachel ask Gar to grab a snack and a drink from the snack counter around the corner.
You sit on the floor, your hands resting behind you while your legs are stretched out and Rachel sits on a bench. Jason continues to practice with a wooden stick, more or less haphazardly while you wait for Gar to come back. Gar is only gone a few minutes before he strolls in with a box of Cheez-Its and three Gatorades.
"So, what do you think is going on out there?" Gar asks, handing Rachel the box of Cheez-Its and you a Gatorade.
"If it's anything like when I got her, bombarding her with too many questions." You say, opening the Gatorade.
"He's probably just trying to find out who she is." Rachel states.
"So, bombarding her with too many questions." You repeat as Gar sits on a bench.
"It wasn't that bad, was it?" He asks.
"He sent you to talk to me because I refused to talk to him so kind of." You chuckle.
"He's giving her a cell job. That's what he does cause he can't resist a stray." Jason says sounding annoyed.
"As if it's a bad thing." You quip, gesturing your left hand around the room. "We were literally all strays."
"Don't take his side." Jason mutters, a whine in his voice.
"I mean I knew he'd be bringing in new people. I just didn't...I guess I just didn't think it'd be so soon." Gar explains with the shrug of his shoulders, leaning his elbows on his knees.
You tilt your head slightly to the right trying to figure out if this is what happened when Dick brought you back. They had only been together a month before you showed up so the fact Gar thinks it's still soon, hurts a little. It all worked out okay with you being here, so what's the difference between you and this new girl?
"We didn't even know if we can trust her. Hell, we don't even know what the fuck she is." Jason raises his voice, growing more dramatic.
"What she is, is a person who needs help." Rachel's voice is stern as she looks at Jason.
"Or," Gar starts, holding up his fingers, Gatorade in hand. "Is she a person?" Rachel tilts her head, giving Gar a displeased look.
"You guys sure do know how to make people feel welcomed." You roll your eyes. "Is this how you guys acted when Dick brought me here?"
Gar gives a yikes expression. "Well....yeah." He nods sheepishly. "We didn't know you."
"You burned Dick." Rachel adds.
"You also looked like shit." Jason points out, a grin on his lips.
"So? It all worked out with me. She's just a person." You defend the new girl.
"How did she survive the jump?" Gar leans in, voice raising slightly.
"So, you think she's a metahuman?" Rachel asks.
"Yeah, or, or an alien." Gar throws his arms to the side, defending his point. "Like Kory."
"I need to meet Kory, she sounds fun." You state, Gar gives you a questioning look, shaking his head before his eyes widen, as if asking you to agree with him. You let out a sigh. "That's kind of fair though."
"Really?" Rachel snaps her head in your direction.
"You said it yourself, I did burn Dick. If she's also a metahuman or....an alien..?" You give Gar a questionable look before looking back at Rachel. "We don't know."
"Well, if she was like Kory, those cops wouldn't be alive right now." Rachel argues, looking back to Gar before grabbing a few Cheez-Its and offering the box to you.
"She can fight." Jason chimes in, taking a short break from fighting the air. "Alright, I'll give her that. Whoever she is, she's had training."
"Did you guys see her eye? When Dick was changing the bandages?" Gar asks, clearly going somewhere with this.
"What about it?" Rachel asks.
"It was gone." Gar scoffs, almost amazement in his voice. "But the wound had already healed." He leans forward as if not completely believing what he'd seen.
"Well, that's pretty sick." You give an approving smile.
"You serious?" Jason asks.
"She's been here one hour and the three of you are already obsessed with her."
"You don't think it's sick as fuck that she jumped from a roof, into a building and her eye is already healed? That's awesome." You defend your stance.
"She's a freak." Jason huffs, his voice a higher pitch this time. "Look my vote is we kick her ass out." You scrunch your face at Jason just as Gar starts.
"Okay, wait, who says we even get a vote?" Gar asks.
"Who says she even wants to stay?" Rachel argues. "Look, it's hard to believe but maybe her idea of paradise isn't sharing a bathroom with you, Jason."
"Well, I think she should stay, just for the record." You state. "Assuming, she isn't going to kill us all."
"You do?" Jason scoffs.
"Uh, yeah, as the newest person Dick found on the streets, my vote is yes." You hold your head up high.
"It'd be easier if we knew who she was." Gar states.
"I know how we can find out exactly who she is." Jason gets that knowing smile on his face, the one that always says he's up to no good.
"Do I get to participate this time?" You quip knowing exactly what Jason is up to.
"I thought you said it was wrong." Gar points out.
"Well, yeah," You scoff. "But, I wanna know if she's gonna kill us, especially if Dick gives us a vote. We should know who's sleeping under the same roof as us, right?"
"See, she gets it." Jason says with pride.
You roll your eyes at Jason before looking back to Gar. "You didn't get caught the first time."
"Alright, fine." Gar agrees, still not liking the idea of going behind Dick's back again to look into someone but he's not gonna say to Jason and you.
"You knew and you're okay with it?" Rachel questions. Rachel knows she would at least be pretty mad if the boys went and looked into her instead of just talking to her. She's surprised you aren't mad.
You shrug. "I mean, it would have been nice had they just asked but let's be honest, I wasn't gonna tell them shit anyway. So, I get it. They had to make sure I wasn't a serial killer or some psycho."
"We could talk to her. Maybe she's more open than you." Rachel suggests as you hand the box of Cheez-Its back to her.
"I don't know, Rach." Gar sucks in a breath. "She didn't seem too willing to talk since she was...trying to leave."
"I'm not helping," Rachel shakes her head with disapproval.
"No asked you to." Jason chortles.
"Shut up, Jason." Rachel groans.
"Can we just get back to training?" Gar groans, growing tired of the conversation.
You get up with the suggestion. "Please."
The four of you start your training again until Dick walks in to tell you you call it a night. The four of you go your separate ways to your rooms and the bathroom for your nightly showers. All of you choose to leave the girl alone in her room. Dick said she isn't up for much talking but he's got it all handled, whatever that's supposed to mean. So, the four of you wrap up your night and head to bed.
It takes you a little while to fall asleep. Ever since beating up Jerry, you’ve slept a little better. Nightmares still rear their ugly head about once a week but it's better. It went from every night to once a week, which is an improvement. Beating up Jerry didn't help you feel better about what you went through but knowing that he got to suffer, knowing that Dick turned him in and you saved a little boy from the same treatment, it did ease some of the weight from your bones. It's just a matter of dealing with and working through the trauma he left you with and actually being at the tower surrounded by these four strangers, which helps because to some extent, they all get it.
No one wakes up one day and decides to be a hero. There's something deeper about it and for the five of you, it's trauma. The want and need to not let another innocent person live with what you went through and there's something remarkable in that. But, that doesn't erase any of the trauma you've all gone through. And for you, seeing the new girl brought in in the same way you were, it brings everything you tied down back up to the surface. Another nightmare scares you awake.
You sit up straight in bed, eyes wide but weighed down with sleep. Your heart is thundering in your chest, the room dark beside the city light illuminating your room through the window. Your hands are shaking in your lap, glowing green, something you’ve never even told Gar about.
When the nightmares are really bad, it's as if it triggers the acid and your hands start glowing. Luckily, it's never been bad enough that you actually produce the acid and burn through the bed. But, it is something that scares you even more. If nightmares can trigger the glow, what else can? And does that mean you’re losing control of it? If you don't have control, then what? You don't actually want to hurt someone, especially by accident. But, you choose not to wallow in it because it's not going to do you any good and it's only going to make you feel worse. So, you snatch your phone from the charger and head to your door.
You tip-toe through your door, closing it behind you and make the short walk to Gar's room. The door is unlocked just like it always is and the pinball machines give a blue glow to his room with the city lights shining through his windows. A comforting smile tugs at your lips as you shut the door. The green-haired boy is curled up on the left side of his bed, facing the door and Gar always look so comfortable sleeping, lips parted lightly. He's a lazy sleeper and you think it's the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.
"Gar?" You whisper softly, sitting on the edge of his bed. Gar doesn't even budge. "Gar?" You call, shaking him slightly, stirring him awake.
He peeks an eye at you, his hair a complete mess. He gets this lazy-tired smile on his face as he sees you. "Nightmare?" His voice is rough and drenched in sleep, something you swear you could play on repeat for hours on end and never get bored. You nod softly, the smile falling slightly. Gar lifts the blanket for you. "C'mon." He mumbles, inviting you in.
"Thank you." You whisper to him, getting up and sliding under the blankets with him.
Gar turns over on his back, stretching his arm behind your head so you can lay on his chest. "Anytime." Gar looks down at you, this cute smile on his face that has the power just to make the world seem like a better place. Gar smiles at you and everything seems like it's gonna be okay, like nothing in the entire world will ever be scary again. There's a kind of magic about him and you adore every aspect of the boy with soft eyes and green hair.
You cuddle up against his chest, resting your arm over his torso and lightly gripping his t-shirt. You can hear Gar's heart and it's the most comforting sound you’ve ever heard. It's slow and steady. You remember the first night you went to him after a nightmare and it was awkward.
You didn't know what to do or say. All you knew was that he'd make you feel better and you didn't want to be alone. He did make you feel better but you were both...tripping over your own feet trying to figure out how to sleep or how not to. Gar didn't want to make it weird or be too in your face about it and you weren’t sure if you wanted to be too close him. It was a mess, actually but you settled on his chest anyway because that's what felt comfortable. That poor boy's heart nearly beat out of his chest for almost half an hour. He was so nervous.
He'd never slept with anyone like that before and he just adores you with everything in him. He never wants to mess anything up and he didn't know what to do. Gar followed your lead and it made him more nervous than he's ever been. But, there was a sense of comfort in it because you chose him to be with when you’re scared. Something about him, made you comfortable enough to fall asleep and sleep soundly. Something about him, felt right to you. And that makes Gar's chest swell every time you come to him for this. He wishes you'd do it more than just when you have nightmares but he never has the guts to ask. So, he wraps his arm around you while the steady pace of his heart lulls you to sleep.
Tumblr media
You wake up first, before either of your alarms. You've moved throughout the night, you’ve rolled over, facing the door while Gar's arm is lazily draped over your waist. You can hear him softly snoring behind you and you carefully roll over as to not disturb him. The peacefulness of his face makes you smile as you watch him. And for a second, you almost forget there are other people in the tower. You forget about your nightmare just a few hours before and everything, right now, feels so right.
You feel safe and happy and comfortable. And calm. Your brain is quiet with him. It's not bitter or cold or full of range. It is at peace with every horrible thing you’ve seen and been through. Just...peace. And maybe that's what it's all about.
Maybe, it's not about flirting all the time or who makes you question the intentions of everything for fun. Maybe it's not about shared trauma or experiences. Maybe, it's just about who's there for you when everything feels like it's caving in. Maybe it's about who sticks around when the darkness closes the blinds. Maybe it's just about the person who lifts some of the weight from your shoulders when everything gets a little too heavy and maybe it's about the person that makes you comfortable and finally lets you feel peace. Maybe that's what it's all about.
But, that’s all just maybes.
"Do you always stare at me when I sleep?" Gar mumbles, voice drenched in sleep as he opens his eyes, blinking slowly at you.
"No." You scoff, feeling your cheeks start to burn. "You were snoring." You brush it off.
"Sorry." Gar chuckles softly.
"It's okay, I don't mind." You give him a smile. "You're cute when you're sleeping through, you look peaceful."
Gar's eyes widen and you called him cute. What does he do? "Oh...yeah?" Gar asks, feeling his breath hitch in his throat. "Thank you. Uh, so do you." Gar offers, as if waiting for you to laugh or make a sarcastic comment but you don't. Your smile is sweet like honey.
"Thanks." You look away just as yours and Gar's alarms start blaring at full volume. "Ew." You grimace, rolling over and grabbing your phone from his nightstand, Gar doing the same. "Want pancakes?" You ask, looking back at him.
Gar raises a brow, you’ve never offered him food that wasn't a snack before. "Sure? You can make them?"
"Wow, rude." You let out a laugh, your voice still filled of sleep. "Yes, the fuck I can, Garfield."
Gar laughs, the use of his full name makes flowers bloom his chest. He doesn't normally like when people call him it but you? You call can him Garfield when it’s like that. "I was just checking! Vegan pancakes?" Gar raises a brow.
"Hey, there, what kind of monster do you take me for to offer you pancakes and not offer a vegan option?" You quip. "Of course."
"Sweet." Gar beams at you and you offering to make him pancakes makes him feel really important. "Do you need help?"
You shake your head. "Nah, consider it a long overdue thank you for letting me sleep in here and for dealing with my bullshit."
"I don't mind." Gar says with ease as a gentle laugh leaves his lips. He never minds being there for anyone, but especially you.
"I know but I'm gonna thank you anyway and make you pancakes because you deserve it." You give him a cheeky smile before tossing the blanket off of you and getting up from the bed. "You can watch though." You give him a wink, the heat rushing to Gar's cheeks and you watch his eyes go wide, mouth moving not knowing to say. You scrunch your nose as you laugh. "You're also cute when you get flustered."
Gar lets out a sigh and he thinks you might be the death of him one day. "I'm not flustered." Gar defends, sitting up before rubbing his hands over his face.
"Mhm, sure, you're not." You nod, words leaking of sarcasm.
"I'm not!" Gar defends further with a tired laugh.
"Okay." You shrug, turning on your heels. "Sure." You snicker. "I'll meet you out there."
"Yeah, okay." Gar nods, falling back onto his pillows as you leave, leaving his door slightly ajar.
You make your way to the kitchen, Dick is, of course, already in there with his coffee. It's been a month and somehow you still almost always catches him while he's in here. Surely, this man has other things to do in the morning but no, he is always here. But, you just 'morning' him and walk over to the drawer with the pans, pulling out a griddle. Dick watches you with a raised brow, casually sipping his coffee. You grab the ingredients including regular milk and soy milk for Gar, one of the non-dairy options Dick keeps stocked for him. You continue to rummage through the kitchen, casually glancing at your phone for all of the ingredients.
"What are you doing?" Dick finally asks.
"Making pancakes." You say with confidence, measuring the flour into a large mixing bowl.
"Right." Dick clicks his tongue. "Since when do you cook?"
"Why is everyone so shocked?" You scoff, measuring the milk for Gar's before grabbing a sticky note and a pen from the counter, marking the batter with ‘Gar’.
"You haven't cooked anything that doesn't go in the microwave or isn't frozen since you've been here."
"Well, that's because it's convenient." You quip as Rachel strolls in, sleep still in her eyes. "I like convenience."
"Is she cooking?" Rachel asks through a yawn.
You look at her with wide eyes, pausing what you’re doing. "Okay, seriously?"
"What the fuck is going on?" Jason chortles as he walks in. "Since when do you know how to cook?"
"That's what I said." Dick raises his mug at Jason.
"You know what, none for any of you!" You glare at them, pointing at them with a whisk, some bits of batter dripping off the end. "I'll clean that."
Rachel gains this knowing smile as she sits next to Dick. "Wait, are you making Gar breakfast?" She asks and your cheeks burn. Jason's heart plummets into his stomach. He always knew but it stings.
"What makes you say that?" You ask, trying your best to not be obvious.
"You have the soy and dairy milk out?" Rachel points at the different kinds of milk. "I also heard you leave his room."
"Okay." Dick says loudly, getting up from his seat. "I don't need to hear more of that. Good luck making breakfast. It's very nice of you, Y/n."
"Thank you, Dickolas." You give him a thankful nod.
"Left Gar's room, huh?" Jason asks and Rachel regrets saying anything.
"Yeah...." You say quietly, going back to your batter.
Jason knew, of course he did. You mentioned it to him in passing. You sleep in there when you have a nightmare. And neither of you hides it. It's not some big secret or anything but with Rachel actually mentioning it, someone else mentioning it, it's like Jason is suddenly much more aware of it and it hurts a little. But, he reminds himself that he never had a shot anyway.
He plays this fuckboy thing up so much but he's never been much good to anyone anyway. And he knew it wasn't him because of the movies and the way you talk to him. Jason hoped it'd be him, but the pit in his stomach told him it wasn't so the only thing he can do is brush it off because that's what he does. And you see it across his face, guilt flooding your stomach, almost making you nauseous but you ignore it and continue making breakfast because you like Jason and you like Gar. But dealing with that early in the morning doesn’t sound pleasant, so dodges your sinking heart.
"Want any?" You ask the two of them.
"Please." Rachel gives you a soft smile.
"Yeah." Jason nods, pulling out his phone and scrolling away.
You continue making breakfast as Gar strolls in, a bit surprised to actually see you at the stove. You really don't cook and it makes Gar chuckle to himself. Dick actually does a lot of the cooking but it really is rarely ever good so you normally end up with a frozen pizza or takeout. So, this is nice and something that Gar never really expected from you. You’re so snippy and sarcastic that whenever you decide to be soft, it throws him a bit but in the best way. You’re full of surprises and Gar wants to know all of them.
As the four of you sit down with your breakfast, Dick walks out with the new girl, explaining they were leaving for a bit. The girl made a comment about not wanting to stay which prompted Rachel to ask why. The girl didn't have much of an explanation, looking more like she just wanted to leave and not turn back. Dick didn't really say much else though and just like that, they were gone.
"You still wanna know who she is?" Jason asks, stuffing pancakes into his mouth.
"Obviously." You nod.
"Yeah." Gar sighs, eating his own pancakes. "Hey, these are really good." Gar compliments you.
"Everyone is so shocked." You laugh.
"How'd you learn to make them?" He asks.
"Oh, I can follow a recipe." You chortle. "I can make a sandwich from scratch, everything else I just Google."
"That makes sense." Rachel nods.
"Nothing?" You look to Jason, waiting for a quip. You fully expect him to boast about how he could do this in his sleep if he tried. Or how he’s had better pancakes from Denny’s or IHOP, something sarcastic at least.
"Eh," Jason shrugs. "I can do better." Jason gives you a smirk, choosing to shrug it off.
"Mhm. Sure ya can." You nod.
The four of you finish up your breakfast and make your way to the new girl's room where Dick changed her bandage. Gar saw Dick toss her bandage in the trash and just like they did with you, Gar snatched it and brought it to the comms lab. Jason takes it from Gar and uses some of the technology to grab a blood sample to run through the computer. Gar takes a seat in the chair, you standing behind him and resting your arms on the back of the chair. Jason stands off to the side, eyes glued to the screen as Gar types away. Jason starts pacing a bit behind you as the screen starts loading, trying to find information on the girl.
"You're gonna burn a hole into the floor, Jay." You state, glancing back at him.
"Yeah? What if this is her plan, get Dick alone and attack him or some shit."
Gar and you both look over your shoulders at him. "I don't think she's gonna attack him, man." Gar lets out a sigh.
"Yeah, I think we're safe there." You nods your head while the two of you look back at the screen, the computer making a noise as it loads.
"Come on." Jason paces twice more before standing next to Gar. "Come on."
"Match identified." The computer says once everything has loaded.
"Rose Wilson." Gar says, leaning forward and clicking a button. "And that's her dad, Slade Wilson."
"Well, fuck." You let out a scoff.
"No...fucking...way." Jason says, eyes wide as he puts his hands on the computer panel, leaning forward as if not believing what he's seeing.
Gar looks between the two of you, confused. "What?"
"Deathstroke." Jason says, something cross between amazement and shock coming over his voice.
"Bad dude from, what? Five years ago?" You look to Jason.
"Think so, yeah. He killed one of the Titans." Jason explains, keeping his eyes on the screen.
"Wait, how do you know that?" Gar looks behind him at you.
"I had a lot of free time, Titans, Justice League, Robin, ya know? Found it all interesting. Deathstroke killing one of the Titans was pretty public. Aqualad, right?" You glance at Jason again for confirmation.
"Yeah." Jason nods.
"So, this girl, Rose is Deathstroke's daughter?" Gar asks, turning back to the screen.
"Seems that way." You let out a sigh.
"Think he did that to her?" Gar's voice is pained with the question.
"Wouldn't put it past him." Jason adds. "Dude is fucked up."
"We have to tell Dick, then. He has to know." Gar urges. "Maybe we could look further into him.
"Yeah, do that." You agree with him and the three of you watch, reading what shows up on the screen while you wait to inform Dick.
If Deathstroke is involved, surely that's something Dick would have clued you all in on if he knew. So, now it's up to the three of you to bring it to Dick's attention before Rose gets too close, just in case.
