I adore Luzu, so it really warms my heart that when he was mentioned today when Phil was asking about La Velada, not only did PHIL get super excited and emphasize his support for Luzu, but Chat also got excited and hyped him up. All us crows love him so much, even though we only saw him interact with Phil once :') I hope that now his training is over, he can log back in and they can hang out again

Hey there! I really like your Faust shorts. Usually I’m nervous about requesting stuff, but I wanted to ask. Do you think maybe you could do Bard and a younger fan reader who’s been helping out at helvete for a job? He calls her “little lady,” both because she’s younger and way shorter than him lol. Maybe some of her bullies come into the shop and start teasing her, but then scary tall lanky boy comes out with the scary dog energy and scars them off? And when he sees that she’s kinda upset still about what happens he offers to let her pick out the horror movie they’re gonna watch together. Just cute platonic stuff with a smug of a crush on readers side lol
My little Lady - Faust x fem!reader
Tumblr media
warning : alcohol, cuddling, use of a knife and gun
Info : Hi hi thanks for the request anon don't be nervous the only bad thing that could happen is a ,,No". So have fun reading this and hope you and others likes it ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Helvete was the place to go if you were looking for like-minded people, weirdos, crazy people, satanists or simply a distraction.
It was a store for freaks, for people who didn't want to belong in society and didn't do so. A store that was nevertheless a home for very specific people.
A home that became a place where all the freaks could meet to be just that. Freaks. It was the store where the little lady stayed, at least that's what Faust always called her.
The younger employee who initially only helped out at the weekend was now an employee and a member of the store. At first, the boys had almost laughed at her when she came in because of her size she almost seemed to still be at school.
Although this was not the case, it was an unusual view, but by the time she proved herself on the drums and especially in her knowledge of music, she had the respect of the group. Her knowledge went so far that she only had to hear one note to know which song and band it was.
A talent that the biggest of the group, Faust, found particularly amusing. When he wasn't asleep, at home or watching horror movies, he was always in the store and a friendship soon developed between the two of them.
What started with a ,,Here, let me help you" and him taking a box from her to put it on the highest shelf usually ended with an extended evening in the store where they both listened to their favorite music.
She gave him a new knife for his birthday and he gave her a pair of boots with heels. Heels that made her a little taller, but not quite enough to even come close to her.
But she loved these boots and wore them almost every day, even on the day the door to the store opened and a certain group came in. Great, she thought as she looked up from the box of new records.
It was the new print of the Venom album and many would be coming in tomorrow so she wanted to get everything ready. But when she saw exactly who was standing in the doorway, she had to stifle a frustrated cry.
,,Well, if it isn't the freak," she heard the leader of her "friends" say, and she hadn't been able to get rid of the three of them since she had left the church.
She had met the three of them at the church and when she started wearing a little more black, well, Satan always shows himself in the strangest places.
,,If you want to buy something, make it otherwise," she tried, trying to suppress the fear and discomfort in her voice. But as the three approached her, she slowly moved away, wanting to escape, wanting to stop being the victim.
,,Oh, we're buying... only the customer service isn't that good, is it, boys?" he asked and suddenly the other two began to take the records out of their packaging and smash them. Their pleas and screams to stop stopped as the oldest of the three approached them.
She pushed hard with her back against the corner and her fear showed when he slid his fingers to her earrings. ,,It would be a shame to lose it," he murmured and placed his fingers on the upturned cross earring. ,,Don't do that," she said, her voice brittle and full of fear that he would tear her earring off.
Tears formed in her eyes as she watched more records being destroyed, the pain in her ear intensifying. Before suddenly footsteps could be heard from the cellar.
They sounded heavy and the steps creaked under the older man. ,,If I were you, you go now!" he hissed and she saw the knife flash in his hand as he looked at the three of them from behind his hair. ,,And what if you don't?" one of the three asked and threw a record at the larger one.
But Faust caught it and threw it so precisely that the edge cut the little one. ,,I'm... bleeding," he said firmly and backed away slowly, while the other fled, cursing as Faust pointed the knife at him.
,,What, are you going to kill me?" the leader asked, letting go of the young woman and walking towards the taller one, who towered over him. But Faust just smirked before grabbing the smaller one by the collar and pulling him towards him.
The coldness of the knife lay against the younger man's throat. ,,Do you want to find out?" he asked and saw the fear slowly forming in his gaze as he tore himself away and ran out screaming.
Before the door closed and Faust instantly lost the creepy energy. But in all of this she felt the rapid beating of her heart, which she knew was not only due to her fear.
Perhaps she had developed a little crush on him in all this time. But above all, he had her gratitude. ,,Thank you... Faust," she said and threw her arms around him, hugging the taller one, who lifted her up with a smile and twirled around slightly.
,,Come on, little lady, pick a movie and I'll make some popcorn...no one should say you were afraid of them," he said with a grin and went into the professional kitchen before she settled into the beanbag and decided on Halloween.
Already feeling much more relaxed watching the beginning, she soon felt the bowl of popcorn in her lap. ,,I couldn't have made a better choice, little lady," he said, slapping her lightly on the arm before he took some popcorn and she leaned against him before they both enjoyed the movie together.
But inside they both knew that they would give their lives to the other. They would look out for each other...they always would.
#6 - Dance, for @hinnymicrofic
Harry heard the doorbell ring and walked up to the front door to be met by his dad, Sirius and Remus.
Of course he should have known that asking help from his dad meant asking all the three of them.
"Heard Prongs Jr. had an emergency."
Sirius sauntered into the flat while Remus shrugged at his husband's antics. Harry looked at James, unimpressed and saw him grinning widely.
He closed the door and walked into the living area to be boxed in between James and Sirius.
They stood on either side of him, their hands on his shoulders. Sirius had a weird don't-mess-with me attitude while James looked like an overexcited crup.
Harry glanced heavenwards. It was going to be a long day.
"So, the first step to master dancing is to understand the art form. Dancing is about art, about finesse, about emotions. You should submerge yourself in it, let your body be free, rise and fly. Then and only then, can you become a great dancer."
"Well, you know, it's for our first couple's dance at our wedding. Just learn a few steps, make sure that I don't step on Ginny's feet or embarrass myself. Just the basics, nothing major." He felt the need to clarify after Sirius' long, dramatic speech.
"Oh, that's even more important. Your first dance as husband and wife. Goodness. It has to be perfect. James, I'm glad that you called me."
James nodded seriously, "Yeah, I had to. It's so sweet of him, isn't it? My boy all grown up and preparing for his Wedding Dance. Oh God, he's getting married. Oh, how the time flies, just feels like yester-"
"Okay, dad." Harry patted his dad on the back, comforting him as James' started getting emotional.
"Now, Harry, listen to me carefully. The way you dance with your partner will mean everything. There are a number of things I want you to know. The way you hold their hand, the way you look into their eyes, the way you lead them or be led, where you are putting your free hand -every action has deep meaning attached to it...."
Harry wiped his eyebrows hearing Sirius go on and on while Remus sat on the couch, watching in amusement. He signaled to him to rescue him and he just shrugged.
"I will give you a small demonstration with Remus. I want you to watch us carefuIy."
While Sirius and James started browsing through the phone for the "perfect practice song", Harry walked to Remus, "This was not how I imagined spending the day when Ginny went with Hermione and Luna to the spa."
"It's your fault that you decided to call James and not Lily." Remus smirked.
Harry glared at him, "Mom asked you to tell me that, didn't she? I knew I should have asked her but I thought dad would be more knowledgeable about leading."
Remus shrugged, "You'll have something to laugh about after a few years and besides it's fun to see them all hyped up."
"What about me?"
"Ahh, you will survive." Remus chuckled.
After four hours of painstaking practice, Harry managed to achieve "pass marks" according to Sirius.
He might have wanted to scream and cry in agony many times during the stretch but maybe a tiny part of him could begrudgingly admit that he enjoyed spending time with his dad and godfathers.
Harry-James and Sirius-Remus were dancing in celebration, spinning and laughing that nobody heard the sound of footsteps.
Lily and Ginny stood at the entry to the living room, watching in amusement as the boys danced without a care in the world.
Lily and Ginny clapped enthusiastically as the dance finished with James twirling and falling into Harry's arms with fervor.
Harry and James, hearing the claps turned around to see Lily and Ginny leaning on each other, grinning madly.
"Bravo! What a performance, boys. Truly a feast to watch." Lily said appreciatively.
"Thank you! Could be improved, but I tried my best." Sirius bowed deeply.
Lily and Ginny chuckled while James and Harry shuffled on their feet, their faces flushed.
Harry stared as Ginny walked to him and gave him a short peck on his lips.
"Not bad, Potter!"
Harry practically preened, hearing his fiancée, "Oh this." He tried to sound nonchalant. "This was nothing. Wait until you dance in my arms."
She whispered, "Oh is that so?."
Harry gulped.
"I can't wait!" Ginny winked at him and walked away.
"Can I get a history check?" Pete asks.
Chay hums, flipping through his notes. "What are you trying to remember?"
"Have I seen or heard of Vegas taking physical abuse from his father before? Rumors, maybe?"
Chay taps his chin for a long moment. "Roll for perception instead."
Everyone at the table groans. Pete slaps a hand over his eyes.
"Can't believe you're doing Pete dirty like that, Chay." Porsche claps a hand onto Pete's shoulder in sympathy.
"What's your record on perception rolls, again?" Macau says. He starts ticking off on his fingers. "Failed that check on Kinn, then that other check on Hia, then the one on Porsche, and then on Porsche, and then Porsche—"
"Leave me alone," Pete says, muffled into his hand.
"Least it's better than his deception throws," Porsche snickers. "Haven't seen you get anything above a five in weeks—"
"He's just a little clueless, aren't you, Pete," Vegas says, arms crossed, mirth clear on his face.
"Fine, you bastards," Pete mutters, grabbing his die.
"You know what, Phi," Chay interjects, right as Pete rolls, "I'll give you advantage on this one."
"Holy shit," Porsche says, leaning over Pete's dice box. "He's not gonna need it."
"Nat twenty," Pete breathes out.
"Dude!" Macau yells. "Absolutely sick—"
"Phi," Chay tries to speak over the uproar, "can you — Macau, shut up — Phi, can you tell the table about your own father?"
Pete leans back. "When I was little, my father put me in muay thai, and he used to, uh," he grimaces, "beat me up after matches, if I lost."
Chay nods. "You watch Gun punch Vegas, and you immediately recognize this as a mirror of what happened to you in your past. You can also tell that this isn't new, that Vegas is used to taking these kinds of beatings, and he's used to bearing them in silence. Vegas is scared of his father — and Gun does not give a shit about his son, outside of how Vegas can be useful to him."
The table is hushed.
"Well," Pete says eventually. "That's just... great."
"Is Pete's background common knowledge?" Vegas asks suddenly.
"Nope," Chay says.
"Well," Vegas makes a note, "I'll wager that knowledge becomes a lot more relevant very, very soon."
Chay smiles, impish. "We'll see."
Photoshopping/giffing tips and tricks pt. 2
[in addition to this post i previously made]. Before we start, I want to say that i’m no expert in any way, and everyone should work in ways they're most comfortable with, i just want to share some knowledge i collected over the years with everyone who might find it useful and maybe improve their skills in making content. So, let’s get started! WARNING: IMAGE/GIF HEAVY!
Save workspaces.  You can have multiple workspaces for different needs. For example, i’m making gifs more often, but sometimes i make edits as well, so having to switch the timeline panel off when it gets in a way, then go back to the view menu, then bringing it back again... idk, call me lazy, but it seems like a few extra clicks for me 💀 What you can do instead is save your current workspace and easily switch between them any time you want. To do that, align all your tools and menus as you want, then find this icon at the top right corner
Tumblr media
Scroll down to New Workspace, and this window will pop up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name your workspace however you want, and chose what you want to save. You can save keyboard shortcuts, menus and tools. When you click save and change your layout, nothing will happen. That is because you need to reset your Essentials workspace first (the one that’s usually the default). Now when you switch between your workspaces (if you saved multiple) everything should work as expected
Tumblr media
How to change the speed of gif without converting to frame animation (PS 2021 and above). THANK GOD Adobe fixed the glitch where the frame rate gets all messed up when you switch to video timeline, so i would suggest upgrading whatever version of PS you currently have if you can, working with timeline is MUCH easier in my opinion. To change the speed, after you imported the video (photoshop reads only .mp4’s btw, so be sure to check if you have the correct format), click the little play button
Tumblr media
and type in whatever number you want: 25% — the lowest value, but you can also speed the gif up by  entering a number higher than 100%. Remember to do that BEFORE you convert your gif to a smart object (& before resizing it, bc after applying the changes video automatically converts into a smart object), because once you convert it, the speed can’t be changed without going back a few steps). When you slow a gif down, photoshop “eats” some parts of it (usually towards the end), so you need to extend the gif by dragging it to the right until you reach the end of your scene to fix that Normal speed
Tumblr media
Slowed down to 60%. Sometimes slowed down gifs may look choppy, i explained the trick on how to fix it in pt. 1 (click the first link in the post).
Tumblr media
Use plugins. There are so many great ones! For example, i found this plugin called Better Grids: it creates grids and converts them into shapes or frames AUTOMATICALLY based on the numbers you set within the plugin. It’s a lifesaver for me when it comes to photosets! DL (Google drive. M1 Mac users: for the plugin to work, you need to run Photoshop under Rosetta mode first. To do that, right-click the app, go to get Info and check Open using Rosetta if you have that option available)
If your disk space allows, do not convert media. It’s time consuming, messes up the original quality, and usually extremely hard on processors, especially not very powerful ones. Instead, just change the container to open your file in photoshop, It’s faster & less power consuming. I use Subler (mac) and Avidemux (mac & windows) to change the container to mp4, bc for me it’s the simplest ones to use
Handy thansform tool trick. When you try to fit your image into a certain sized canvas, this is probably what you’ll caught yourself doing
Tumblr media
there's actually a much faster and easier way to resize stuff. when you activate transform tool, you'll see these boxes with numbers in the top panel
Tumblr media
watch what happens when i change one of the numbers
Tumblr media
isn't that neat? (make sure that little chain button is checked to mantain proportions. x and y values are for stretching the image horizontally or vertically)
Save document presets. In new document window, type in your desired dimmensions, then click "Save Preset", choose which options you want to save, name it however you want, click ok and you're done — congrats, now you have a saved canvas preset for further use!
Tumblr media
So, i hope these little tips were useful. Have fun creating guys 🌸
I think you all have strong points and if my brain were more together I'd ramble about them in detail but since it's unfocussed I'll ramble quickly.
Amber: You pay very good attention to events. Like, I miss muse birthdays and the like all the time. But anytime someone has something special going on you're sending something in for them.
Ran: Sometimes I can barely keep track of my own headcanons from a month ago but you manage to incorporate details from years of portraying your muses into how you write. Also you have a lot of interesting ideas that gives you unique takes on characters. For example I think your Sanae stands out in several ways. Plus you do full story arcs for your characters and that's real cool.
Anne-mun: You are literally so detailed in your lore and when you write longer replies you're similarly detailed in what you write. You're also very dedicated to projects like your smut-spam. You're also better than me at boardgames. Based on just about every one we played together.
Ruler: I called Frozenfairy the funniest but you're also incredibly funny. You're also the only person I know that only writes a single muse and I think that's allowed you to really make your portrayal of Seiga iconic. To the point that I kind of just think of your Seiga when I think of the canon character.
Sethy: You write muses from very different fandoms, and multiple versions of the same character, very well. Your muses always come across as sweet and charming, which makes you very fun to write with.
Nep: I only just met Nep tbh so I'm limited in what I can say, but I think that they lend a lot of life to their muses in the way they write them. In particular I think they've got a really great dynamic any time they write with Ran.
Aurora: First off your pfp is sooooo cute, I don't think I ever said that. On top of that you've got a lot of enthusiasm. Maybe that's a strange way to put it but you're always happy to share things about your muses and to put it into what you write about them. You're also the only person I've ever seen make danmaku for their characters and that's really cool.
Vel: You're able to take a, in my opinion, quite obscure character (Lily Black) and make her fun and interesting. I also think that Mugi and Maki are real fun oc ideas. Expanding on the rabbits that serve under Eirin is super rad. Also, you always have fun ideas about little mini event things. I quite enjoyed the little lottery box thing you did not long ago.
Argo: This isn't a roleplay strongpoint but you're always there to check in on my health and things. I really appreciate that. As a strongpoint of roleplay, I think you adapt to stuff really well.
Kay: I think Kay's most unique strongpoint is her confidence. Kay radiates bad bitch energy and I highly respect it. Beyond that I don't think I need to say much but you've been a real good friend to me.
Noka: Noka you write even more muses than I do and I think anytime you write a muse you make them interesting. I am always excited to roleplay with your muses and I think we need to have them go on more cute adventures.
Soup: You're incredibly funny and also a master of non-sequiturs. Also you give attention to some real unrepresented characters and that makes me happy. Also the music that you make is really cool and I'm always excited when you share it.
Sats: Of course Sats is a really great writer but I think her real strong point is her great knowledge about folklore and how she incorporates that into her muses. The level of detail on some of her muses, notably Parsee, is genuinely so astounding to me.
Sarience: You're always there to make fun in character comments on the little things. Also you give attention to some characters who don't have much of a presence in the rpc like Hecatia. But also you're very good at writing Neka as just a sweet little bud to everyone in Gensokyo. I really like Neka.
Zane: I think your strong point is being dedicated to staying true to your muse's emotions and exploring how they should be feeling. Like when Eri left and you had a full arc of Nyalter working through her emotions. I greatly enjoyed that.
Swigg: You have ideas that go against the standard grain of fandom perceptions and I really like them. For example, your Nazrin is my favorite Nazrin. I also think you've done a great job of both breathing life into technically canon characters (Chang'e) and creating really lovable ocs (Hana).
Kyo: I do not write with Kyo enough but Kyo makes all their muses fun. I particularly love Kyo's take on Marisa. Generally though I'd say your strong point is the energy that you bring to your muses.
Momi: you haven't really been around in the rpc lately, which I understand (miss you though), but just in case ya ever see this I don't wanna leave you out. I think your someone else whose strong point is the level of detail you put into your muses. Like the thought you have on your muse lore is astounding and I aspire to do that some day.
Xana: Xana is a sweetheart. I think her strong point is the humor that she brings to her writing. Also she gives Mima rep and that's a super plus in my mind.
Cobalt: Is someone else that I think has their sense of humor as their strongpoint. Also am I able to say that the way they write Chen is a strong point in general? Like I absolutely adore how Cobalt writes Chen and gets excited any time they're on my dash.
I have no idea what to call Letsspringintoaction and I've been too embarassed to ask but they genuinely feel like the heart of the fandom in my mind. Always showcasing different fanworks on their blog.
Now none of y'all say you don't have strong points or I will go fucking feral.
Jeanist passes a Jift Box (Jean Gift Box) to Bakugo. And suddenly he's gone. Like a fine morning mist. Inside? It's a pair of jeans that fit him... almost too perfectly, and a small, travel hair-care set. Along with a card that reads: "It is only a fool to believe himself above any man, and for that reason, I have been a fool, as I have seen, through watching you, that I have many things left to learn, about the human spirit, about hardwork, about tenacity, and of course, about what it means to truly be a hero. Like the fibers of this well-crafted denim, you have interwoven yourself and your unbreakable spirit amongst the threads of my life. It has been a pleasure to watch you grow, and while I cannot take credit for your growth, or your journey, I find a selfish sort of pride in knowing the great hero, Dynamight, once looked to me as a mentor. I am looking forward to the day I work alongside you, once again. Hopefully in a more peaceful time. Happy birthday. Your friend, Best Jeanist."
❛ oi, what the hell's- ❜ before katsuki can even apprehend his mentor about the stupid and weird jift box ... [ it has a name ? ] ... placed in his hands, he was gone. crimson stares blankly in the general direction of his last sighting with a sense of bewilderment across his features. he glances to the box. back in the direction of jeanist. ❛ ... seriously, what the fuck ? ❜
maybe it was his way of avoiding whatever repercussions would come from gifting a kid with an explosive temper. not that there'd be any real ones, since one of them was a pro and the other was just an intense and foul-mouthed hero-to-be.
Tumblr media
nonetheless, calloused hands work to pull apart the jift box ... [ seriously, that's what it's called ? is it made of denim ? ] ... and ultimately reveal the present inside. his gaze turns quizzical at the pair of jeans he lifts out. as he'll find out, they fit him too well and it's maybe a little concerning how well they work with his frame - as it stands, though, he slings it over an arm to check out the hair care products next. huh. travel sized ... maybe he could use that.
his attention finally settles on the card, and he pulls it out to read properly.
it feels like forever ago since the blond won the sports festival, prideful and arrogant in his capabilities, the first year to topple everyone else with unabashed confidence. since he applied to intern at best jeanist's agency with the express desire to witness a top five pro-hero in action, feeling like he'd chosen the wrong agency, enduring the week he felt was fresh from hell - as his hair was styled in an unnatural manner and he had to wear jeans with his costume.
he was also the one to guide him, to show him how to start interacting with the public. because patrols weren't just for deterrence ; they were to show the people who you really are. and because a hero name isn't just a callsign for other heroes to call you by ; they are a wish, a reflection of how you want to be, how you should be. best jeanist made it clear he did not like bakugou katsuki straight away, but he was also the one who put him on the right path - and how could katsuki be ungrateful or ignorant of everything his first mentor offered him ?
and now here he was at the beginning of his third year. here he was, having learned from many mentors now, having gathered knowledge from each since they all had value. but best jeanist was the first.
katsuki may have made his journey on his own accord, but just as he's woven himself into jeanist's life - as he describes, in his stupid thread-related speech - the pro-hero had done the same for him. after all, was it not best jeanist who assured the other heroes that his stubborn and indomitable spirit would mean he'd never cave to the villains ? was it not best jeanist he wanted to intern with again, even if he couldn't since the former had disappeared ? and was it not best jeanist who was the first to hear his hero name, shouted across the battlefield with the same unyielding confidence as if he wasn't bleeding out ?
Tumblr media
❛ damned jeans. couldn't come 'n say it to my fuckin' face ... ❜ but katsuki is not any less appreciative for the gifts, or the well wishes. he puts everything back in the box for safekeeping. if he can catch the hero again before he goes dashing off to who-knows-where, the blond will find ... some way of expressing his gratitude. even if it ends up being less than pleasant.
and best jeanist should keep an eye out : bakugou katsuki has every intention of interning at his agency during his last year of ua.
[ so long as he can go without his hair being styled - he'll even put up with the jeans, whatever, if it means he doesn't end up with the embarrassingly uniform and slicked-over hairstyle from his first year. ]
@eclipsemuses / katsuki's bday wishes! <3
I genuinely think by the way that there's a great chance CC!Mumbo is autistic. I say this as an autistic person.
I just reblogged a post about how well he can control situations, and added my own little ramble on there, and the second I hit reblog, it just really drove home the point of how similar he is to how autism presents in me specifically.
I can read people well. Not in the way that I can do it instinctively, but in the way that once I make a concious effort, I can basically psychoanalyse them.
This stems from being a hyperficiation of mine for a long time.
Mumbo often seems the same. That he can disect and analyse and interpret.
And he uses this. Often. I won't go into the ramble again, but he does.
And then, around his friends, the mask falls. And suddenly, he seems like the least people smart person ever. Because he doesn't feel the need to analyse and control the situation around him. He feels safe to just let us happen around him.
He often missinterprets situation, misses jokes, and generally just really seems to fall into that "lack of social skills" thing.
And it doesn't stop there, if you know just a little about Mumbo, you'll know he's been obsessed with videography ever since he was young. If I remember right, he's self taught, and has gotten really, really good at it, and invested a lot of time in it. If you follow his Instagram and/or second YouTube channel, he also tends to take this with hom everywhere he goes.
Sounds familiar?
Sounds like a special interest to me.
He also seems to be very fond of familiarity and patterns. Basing next to the same person every season, only rarely engaging in new games, even within minecraft, and if he does, only if he's with people he knows well. (Eg. The life series)
He seems very fond of his comfort zone, maybe moreso than others, usually barely breching it on his own account.
He also seems to burn out especially hard when he does burn out, needing long breaks and physical distance from what caused him to burn out.
He also seems to be needing breaks more frequently than others.
Another major trait of autism is speech. Usually people think this means talking on a monotone voice, but it can also be the oposite, and he checks that box quite well, I think. He tends to be extreme in the way he talks when he's unmasking, squealing, shouting, etc. And in the oposite direction talking very softly.
This is more obvious when he is in conversation with his friends, meaning in non-scripted conversations/situations where he couldn't plan ahead and where the situation is over all more unpredictable.
The main thing I can't comment on is sensory needs, since this isn't really visible through his videos.
But yeah, over all, he just checks so many of the boxes, and ticks off my Autism meter so much.
Don't take this post too seriously of course, it's just a bit of an analysis, to my knowledge he's never spoken up about this one way or another, and in the end, it's not really any of my or our business.
I just think it's interesting and wanted to ramble away my thoughts
Astrid vs the Shadow Druids
But first, some travel
Astrid: Oooooooh this isn't good.
Shadowheart: *reading a signpost* Moonhaven. Doesn't look like a haven for much of anything to me.
Goblins: Oi! Piss off!
Astrid: ...So we're not even going to get a chance to--
Goblin: *shoots at Astrid*
Astrid: *uses Gloves of Missle Snaring and snatches the arrow out of the air an inch from her face* Okay never mind then. Also, just to say? *Vicious Mockery resonance* MY GREAT-UNCLE CAN SHOOT BETTER, AND HE'S DEAD! MAYBE WHAT WE'LL DO TO YOU WILL IMPROVE YOUR AIM!
Gale: I do love it when she marks targets for me. IGNIS!
Shadowheart: Are those two what they mean when they say 'power couple'?
Astarion: Magically, yes. Socially ... I suppose that too. She'd carry him through the social whirl, and he'd guide her through academia.
Gale: If you're quite through speculating about our potential coupledom...
Astarion: Oh. Right. *grabs a goblin; FEEDS*
Further into Moonhaven
Astrid: Well, at least we talked those goblins out of picking on that poor deep gnome...
Gale: Why are you grinning? You usually hate it when she does something altruistic?
Astarion: What can I say? I appreciate a solid con job.
Gale: You would.
Astrid: Come on, guys, we don't need to be squabbling when-- *opens door on bugbear dude in a VERY compromising position with ogre lady* --oh.
Bugbear: PRIVACY!
Astrid: No, sorry, just ... I mean, carry on; I'm trying to get the description down. In my head, you know? There's this one tavern in some of the grubbier bits of Baldur's Gate where this one would bring the house down.
Bugbear: Always wanted to be porn star...
Ogre: MOOD, KILLED. LEAVING.
Astrid: Oh, but...! Sorry. Didn't mean to cockblock you! I guess this is going to have to be more of a limerick now...
Gale; Shadowheart; Astarion: *exchange looks*
Astarion: When you ... finally get her into your bedroll... I know you'll probably leave out the details, you selfish thing, but at least let us know if the ... wealth of knowledge she apparently has about this sort of thing translates into anything ... exciting, won't you?
Gale: Ugh.
And, a little further into Moonhaven
Lumpy: Oooh. Meat. Bodies and bling. These are the best things.
Astrid: Meat apparently chosen by this 'Absolute', so ... maybe you'd like to work for me instead of goblins?
Lumpy: What's in it for me?
Astrid: You obviously like eating the fallen. We usually end up with a lot of fallen and it would get a lot more variety into your diet...
Lumpy: SOLD! *hands her a horn she can barely lift* Call us when you're throwing whatever dinner party; can't wait.
Gale; Shadowheart: *staaaaaare at Astrid*
Astrid: What? They're going to be dead anyway, Astarion gets to do that so I can't really deny anyone else who's helping me dibs on eating our enemies, I need to be able to keep what we loot from the bodies for magical artefacts for Gale, and anyway, the whole biodegrading process works a lot faster when meat passes through a digestive system before returning to the earth.
Gale; Shadowheart; Astarion: *staaaaaare at Astrid some more*
Astrid: I'm getting into Circle of Life thinking because we're going to have to be talking to -- or maybe yelling at -- druids, okay?
Shadowheart: I'd reiterate the fact that you are unbelievably weird, but that goes for all of us at this point, so I suppose either you fit right in, or we do.
And, on the way back to the Emerald Grove
Astrid: So ... do we want to read this prayer to that box to see if we can get it open?
Shadowheart: ...I'd rather feed myself to the owlbear.
Astrid: Oooookay well at least there was some incense and a couple of nice potions. Also ... *peeeeks up over cliff a bit* ...baby owlbears are adorable!!!
Shadowheart: You already have a pet. And a ... probable lich, for some reason.
Astrid: There's always room for more cute.
Gale; Shadowheart; Astarion: .............................
Astrid: Oh, fine.
Finally back at the Emerald Grove
Astrid: Okay, so Gale, the magical artefact I basically fed you didn't feel right when you drained it and that's a worry and I still need to know where Haslin is and that's a worry and I have a feeling that what I'm about to do isn't going to prevent me having to massacre goblins and I don't like that much either but I am going to shove all of that aside because ... excuse me, Kagha? I think the tieflings make much better neighbours than Shadow Druids do.
Other Druids: ...wut.
Astrid: *hands over evidence* Please do something positive with this. We had to kill mud mephits for that. And I know you're doubting even though half your brain is screaming that Haslin was weak and you can do better with this bunch but ... no.
Kagha: It's ... it's fine! It's the right thing to do!
Astrid: By the tenets of your own faith, it really isn't. Silvanus is a god of nature and most plants die in shadow.
Kagha: ...Oh, fuck, what have I done?
Surrounding rats: *turn into Shadow Druids*
Astrid: Bought yourself some very impressive allies that will help you boot the Shadow Druids out of your grain stores?
Astarion: Oh, good; they turned themselves into something tasty.
Astrid: How would that even work? They go back to humanoid once you kill the beast form so one minute you're sucking a rat like a--
Astarion: ...Not sure I want to hear where that one's going after the ... incident we walked in on before.
Gale: Not to interrupt this team bonding, but one of the Shadow Druids became a bit more ... combat ready.
Bear: *ROAR*
Astrid: Oh. Well. *ahem* *Vicious Mockery resonance* I HAD SCARIER TEDDY BEARS AS A CHILD!
Bear: *roars in pain*
Gale: Ah, there we go. It's not a fight unless she kicks it off with shouting insults at people.
Stabnation: *ensues*
Delivering reports later
Zevron: How by the gods did you make her change her mind?
Astrid: Essentially by appealing to her better nature. The details get a lot more complicated. Anyway, are you still going to be heading for Baldur's Gate, or stay here, or...?
Zevron: Well, at least it's not a rush job, but I think there'll be too much tension for us to stay long-term. We really need rid of those goblins.
Astrid: *sigh* Okay, but I should see if I can find some new boots. If I'm going to be wading knee deep in blood ... again ... some more ... I need sturdier footwear.
Gale: You know we only have to kill three generals, right?
Astrid: Yeah, but we have to get in first. So either I somehow don't manage to talk them in circles and we have to fight our way in, or I talk my way all the way in and then the entire place falls in on top of us when we attack the first general and they call for help.
Astarion: Well, I'd wager on the second, so ... I'm an assassin. You have a Silence spell. We can do quiet.
Shadowheart: And even if the first is the case ... did you just forget a bunch of ogres have literally pledged allegiance to you?
Astrid: Well, I didn't really want to force them to fight for me, but ... maybe I can just look at it as inviting them to dinner?
Shadowheart: ...I continue to fear you.
re: traditional publishing
someone asked me to tell them what I knew about traditional publishing, and I decided it was way too much to put in their ask box, so I guess I'm making a post lmao
fair warning, I have spent so long in publishing circles that I no longer have any concept of what normal levels of knowledge about publishing are. if something doesn't make sense because I left out something thinking it was common knowledge, just ask and I can clarify! if I explain something really obvious, I'm not trying to be condescending, I just genuinely have literally no concept what is or isn't obvious anymore. im sorta just trying to cover some basics here so they may be too basic I have no idea hgdsghds
also disclaimer: publishing industries are generally fairlyyyy similar world-wide I think, but idk where you live/if you write in english, so if you're writing in a different language your mileage may vary with these a bit more (because like . . . I pay attention to all the publishing stuff I possibly can, but if conversations about certain aspects are happening in a language I can't speak, I'm going to miss them lmao)(but I think the general gist will still hold true)
I apologize if this is an information overload hgsdghds I am a nerd about this stuff and this is me trying to,,, hold back lmao
anyways because this seems like the easiest way to cover the basics, here is, to my understanding, a basic publishing timeline for trad pub:
first, of course, you get the book as good as you can make it yourself
next up, generally speaking you want to try to get a literary agent. there are occasional opportunities to submit to publishers directly, but they're going to take you more seriously if you have an agent (agents are also great because they'll help you advocate for yourself in contracts!)
to get an agent, you generally have to submit some combination of the following—it should say on their website which ones:
-- a query letter (think of this as similar to what you'd read on the back of a book)
-- a synopsis (a longer description, covering the whole plot)(a query letter will be focused on hooking attention; a synopsis is about proving you follow through on it)
-- the first ten pages/three chapters/etc. again, it should say
if an agent likes your query materials, they'll reach out and ask you for the rest of your manuscript, or in publishing lingo, you'll get a "full request"
if you get a full request, you'll send your manuscript over, and generally get one of three answers. (1) a rejection. (2) a request to revise and resubmit. or (3) an offer
#1, an unfortunate part of publishing is there are generally a lot of rejections. they hurt, but it's not personal—it might not be the right genre/style/etc for the person you submitted to, or maybe they just don't have time for a new project right now, or any number of reasons. they suck, but they're pretty much unavoidable. every single author you look up to has gotten them
#2, an R&R is generally a good thing, although if you don't like their feedback, you don't have to take them up on it. basically, it means they like your book a lot, but they're not ready to commit to it until you make some changes. sometimes, this means they aren't the right fit for you, but a lot of the time they'll have really good feedback, and it means they're genuinely seriously considering signing with you
#3, an offer, is of course the end goal, so we're going to carry on from here
if you get an offer, the first thing you're generally going to do is nudge any other agents who have your full manuscript. generally you'll have about ten days to two weeks to decide whether you want to accept the offer, so you want to let the other agents know that they're about to lose their chance to sign you—they're going to move looking at your book higher on their to-do list, and you may very well get more offers
so you have an offer (or offers! but even just one is enough and something to be hugely proud of). now you have to decide if the agent is the right fit for you/which agent is the best fit if you have multiple offers. one thing to note is you never have to sign with someone even if they're your only offer. if you talk to them, and realize you aren't going to work well with this person, it's okay to say no and keep querying other agents instead
once you have an agent, they might have edits for you. depends on the agent. if so, you'll do a round of edits here
next, the agent will submit to publishers for you. how involved you are in this process will depend on the agent (and also on you)
this process, or "going on sub", generally means a lot of waiting. it's slow. everything in this industry is slow. it sort of sucks, but the best thing to do is just . . . write something else. do your best not to worry about it. there ultimately isn't much you can do here—you sort of just have to wait and hope a publisher bites
I don't actually know much about the process of signing with a publisher, so I won't try to speak to it too much, but I do know bits and pieces about standard contracts and stuff if that interests you
once you've signed with a publisher, the next big step is going to be more edits
a lot of edits, actually
to my understanding you're going to do at least one round of structural edits (plot, character, etc. big picture stuff), at least one round of line edits (smaller stuff, tone, voice, etc), and at least one round of copy edits (grammar, etc). generally it'll be more than just three rounds though
it's up to you what edits you accept, but you are going to have to make a lot of edits if you want to pursue traditional publishing
then comes pass pages (proofreading proofreading proofreading!!)
and somewhere in there, likely before at least one round of pass pages, ARCs are generally going to come out!
ARCs are advanced readers copies, and they're a marketing thing. depending on the book, you might get a lot of ARCs, or you might just get some digital ones on NetGalley. this is the first time people in the general public will actually get to read your book (for the sake of reviewing it)
then: release day!
a few other things to note:
titles and covers:
if you want control over these . . . don't trad pub. you'll get some say, but at the end of the day, they're a marketing decision, so especially if you're a smaller author, you don't get ultimate say over these
payment:
first of all, you never ever pay a traditional publisher anything as an author. same goes for an agent. if they ask you to pay them, they're a scammer
an agent gets paid when you get paid. I'm unsure on the exact percentage, but they take a cut of what you get paid (I know, it doesn't sound great to give up some of your hard-earned money, but they're worth it, trust me)
a publisher pays you
most authors only ever see their advance, so this is a big one. when you sign with the publisher, they'll offer you xyz amount of money. this is your advance. you get this, no matter how many copies of your book sell
an advance is generally paid in instalments—how many depends on the publisher, but usually 2–5. one upon signing, and then generally the later ones will be upon turning in a revised book, upon publication, and then sometimes a year after publication, etc
then comes royalties. but an advance is essentially their estimate of how much you'll earn in royalties—it's them paying you royalties in advance. they cannot take this away if you don't earn that much in royalties, but you won't see any actual royalties until you "earn out", aka until your book sells enough copies to make up the advance
this is still all very simplified, but it's way too long already, so I'll leave it here lmaoooo
if you're considering trad pub vs self pub, the big things to keep in mind are how much control you want vs how much work you want to do. the publisher does a lot of the hard shit for you, but they do also have a lot of control over certain things. if you want your book published exactly the way you want it, self pub might be a better fit, and that's okay!
also: time. I know people who have self pubbed sheerly because they didn't want to wait years for their book to come out, and that is an entirely valid reason to do it. trad pub is slow as shit
@hahaha-darn-it (I know you're the only one who'll read this, but for the record didn't write this like,,, solely to you in terms of how I wrote it, so most of my stuff in here is general not like. aimed specifically and pointedly at you or anything lmaooo)
doom?? a guide to staying alive
"An atmospheric river is a newer name for a familiar weather pattern called the “Pineapple Express.” Meteorologists use the term to describe a flow of moisture from areas just north of Hawaii directly into the Pacific Northwest that is usually accompanied by heavy rainfall and high snow levels."
So we're here just south of the Bay Area in NorCal, certain we're safe from hurricanes, as Hawaii exists—right?
Wrong!
This ✨beautiful phenomenon✨ is a rare occurrence reported to be rolling in all over the Central Coast sometime later tonight, bringing with it mudslides, heavy wind and rainfall, flash flooding, and maybe most concerning, a week-long power outage all over the county.
Well I have 6 younger siblings I couldn't keep infecting with my anxiety, so I had to do something. What better to do than to gather my knowledge so we can prepare?
Tumblr media
FIRST: keep your devices updated with all the alerts and news in your area, as well as communications with your family and friends.
SECOND, WARMTH: your heater ain't gon be working, unless you have a wood-fueled fireplace. In which case, I got nothing more for you. Otherwise: Blankets. Blankets, blankets, blankets. If you're not out of electricity yet, use this opportunity to wash any that need it, and break out extra. Your beds will need plenty ofc, maybe some on couches and other comfy places too. Use tents and blankets as tents around small areas you need warmest, covering windows while not in use will help too.
THIRD, LIGHTING: candles are the obvious, but also a fire hazard. The windows remaining in use will be great during the day, and for the night: flashlights. If you use an empty milk jug (washed out, for the love) and tape its mouth to the flashlight's head, it'll be a great lantern, completely safe, too. Candles are still a great option, we mainly use them in the bathroom and kitchen tho, as water is nearby and the counters won't catch. If you're desperate, crayons (Crayola, atl) will burn for 30 min each.
FOURTH, FOOD: ok ngl there isn't a whole ton to be said here when a power outage is already approaching. Shelf-stable food is the way to go, and a gas stove will still work, even if your microwave and oven don't. In advance, keep a storage of 3 months worth for each person in your household, we keep ours in the garage. Cans of fruit, beans, veggies, etc; boxes of pasta, cereal, dried food, as long as you don't have a pest problem these are safe.
LAST, WATER: soooo most power outages aren't gonna bother the water. Problem is, the causes can: the flash flooding brought on by the storm is likely to infect the water supply, and as my dad says, "we may actually need to boil the literal crap out of it". So, there's that, and mostly along the same lines as the food you'll need it in storage. We use empty milk gallons (also washed, plz don't be nasty) and fill them up, clean tap water will be fine. These are used for flushing, washing hands, cooking, drinking, everything short of bathing. We personally have large water storage containers, but it's not uncommon to lack the room (these are also kept in the garage). In addition to that, ig prep once you know contamination is on the way. We're running laundry, washing produce, showering, and securing the perimeter so we don't have water damage inside.
Aaaaand that's it! Hope this helps somebody~
Skate-Leading Stars, The Bane of my Fucking Existence
I've partially wanted to talk about this anime for a while, but after Confirmation that it's real and I haven't been fucking hallucinating it, I think now is likely a better time than ever to uh, Discuss this weird ass show. Skate-Leading Stars was first revealed to me while working on a separate whole project (My attempt to watch every anime where Hiroshi Kamiya voices a main character) and saw it as the main currently airing show that he was voicing a character in. Unfortunately for me, the thought that formed was "oh sweet, this is a currently airing one I could watch this as it airs," not realizing the two fucking year long brainworm I was about to nourish. As a precursor, I need to make clear I'm going to be jumping around in focus a lot. moreover, this is NOT a review, i just want to vent about something that's been taking over my mind. there is a LOT of weird shit going on with this anime that I'd like to at least cover so if I leave something hanging for a bit, I will get back to it at some point.
Spoilers for Skate-Leading Stars, Your Lie In April
What the fuck is Skate-Leading?
Have you ever watched like, a sport, a game, or some other activity (Including Single player ones!) and just wanted to add people to it for no fucking reason? like, "What if chess was 5 people on each side per board deliberating every action while really hoping nobody else listens in" tier shit. That's the main premise of Skate-Leading. It's a sport where 5 anime boys do figure skating all at once in a formation together. The obvious concerns about safety are not even mentioned and the idea of "how do you even judge this on a regional level well without a LOT of judges" is settled by having the numbers be put up as a box that they say is an AI judging it. a core plot point is the One Interesting Character figuring out how the AI works in his gamer cave and gaming it.
Your first bit of confusion you may encounter with that premise is of course "isn't there already pair skating as an actual real sport one could use for the drama of multi-person skating?" or maybe "doesnt this mean this just a more fucked up yuri on ice?" which to me are both great questions, with only the first easily answered with a Yes. Yuri on ice is the obvious comparison for what SLS is attempting to draw from here, given you have seen literally anything about yuri on ice and the timing of the two shows, but you need to understand that the figure skating is a bait. the yaoi is the point but is bait in regards for understanding this plot. they're not trying to do Yuri on ice. They're trying to do Your Lie In April.
Let's Talk about the OP (Updated info in final paragraph)
For some fucking reason that I originally credited to COVID delays, half the fucking OP is black screens.
I don't think anything of it is especially standout aside from that, while SLS has many weaknesses the OP isnt one of them. Unfortunately it's not anything to write home about either, so I don't want anyone else to feel like we're truly missing out when I reveal the fact that as far as I can tell the OP was censored for the western release. I'm operating on my own anecdotal evidence and what is one of my two current white whales (the other that isn't about to be mentioned is the Japanese dub of Batman Vs Superman) so if my theorizing here is completely incorrect than that's Fine. Thats Fine. About a month into watching the show while it was airing, the half black OP started to get to me. I wanted to see more, try and get to the bottom of it, and eventually managed to find the full uncensored version uploaded which remained up for about two weeks before disappearing. I know that the version we can find online is fucking censored. I have no idea why. once again, so little people I know have any knowledge about this show aside from me, let alone have talked about it. I cannot find anything online talking about the OP aside from light mentions in the comments of the Crunchyroll upload sandwiched between Jesus Bots.
While spending a pathetic amount of time delaying this, I actually in fact have been sent proof of the uncensored OP existing. from anything I could tell or from what the friend who sent this from me could tell, the entire reason is something involving covid delays (Confirming my original suspicion, at least!) making them rush out the international version before the broadcast version, thought the delay wasn't that huge? its still definitely a mystery to me that haunts me a little but at least I know it Exists.
Since I've spent enough time talking about not the plot I think its a good time to address the whole Your Lie In April thing
What the Fuck do you Mean Its Trying to do Your lie In April??
Your lie in April, if you haven't seen it, is a story about dealing with grief, parental abuse and falling in love again with your passions even after loss. it's a very rough anime to sit through emotionally, and while its very much a show i have mixed feelings about personally, it's still a very well written example of its genre. Skate-Leading Stars spends has the main character parallel Kousei Arima's (The Main character of Your Lie in April) very basic arc of a teenager getting back into the area he used to be a prodigy in as a child, any forms of subtly or trauma have been entirely replaced with as many meatheaded brash qualities as they can in order to fit the true BL purpose of the story. Instead of having the love interest heavily foreshadowed to die being someone who views said passion in an entirely different light than him as a way to work through trauma and difficulty handling the act of playing piano again, the love interest is a mysterious boy who's using him to try and get back at his brother. Skate-Leading Stars, unabashedly, apes the format and ideas of Your Lie in April, barely understanding anything else going on, and uses it for a bl anime about a sport that is at best impossible to judge and realistically physically dangerous to exist.
Ok now what?
I don't think its necessary to do a plot summary of SLS, partially because I don't want to, but mostly because who fucking cares. I love bad shows, and while the start of the show is undeniably strong in its garbage it goes nowhere with anything. It spends a large amount of its time as a story setting up beats that never pay off, having loud yaoi boys yelling constantly, or underusing Hiroshi Kamiya. There IS a manga I could read for the rest of the story that's likely been playing out, but since only the first chapter is translated I don't see any reason to examine it too closely. If you want to watch gay ice skating anime, Yuri on ice is talked about for a reason. if you want to watch bad anime with Hiroshi Kamiya Ultimate Otaku Teacher exists. If you have read the manga please tell me if Sasugai actually has some sort of fatal disease or they're just aping the framing from Your Lie in April without meaning again.
I may be hella afraid of birds but that wont stop me from making this.
Injured wing
Tumblr media
The poor thing was in the balcony of the apartment. Making sounds and flapping their wings at ferocity to try to take flight again as you watched in pity.
Taking a warm towel from the dryer, your boyfriend's one since it was the comfier to be exact, you picked up the squirming little brow winged creature and took inside. You didn't had the heart to leave it out there, especially due to the snow.
While taking things out of cabinets, you didn't noticed your phone buzzing with the notifications of a certain... top hero calling you.
.
.
.
"A nightingale." You mused as you read on the internet what type of bird was now having fun on bathing on q small pot of water and singing to its heart content "How adorable!" You gushed as it shock out of the droplets of water as you carefully put a sorta of a tiny sling on a popsicle stick to mantain its feather that seemed to be broken stood on place.
"Sorry buddy, guess you're gonna have to stay like this for some time." The bird seemed to calculate your words before tweaking as you giggled at its cuteness.
That is until you heard the door opening and clicking shut.
Fuck. Keigo.
You grabbed the bird delicately and put it on a box filled with a soft towel and placed on your bed before going to open the bedroom's door to see a soaked wet, hair flat and worried hero with a frow.
"Is this some sorta of revenge or what? I was worried sick (Y/n)! You weren't answering your phone so I thought something happened." You picked your phone in confusion.
"You did?" Shit "oh..."
"Yeah. 'Oh.'" He crossed his arms before sighing cupping your cheeks "Why did you stood me up? I thought we were going to have dinner together on that restaurant."
"God!" You face palmed "I totally forgot! I'm so sorry Kei!" You whined as he let out a chuckle.
"Is fine. Although I would like if you compesate for m-"
Before he could finish his sentence, you both froze when a couple of chirps were heard. You analyzed his expression and soon giggled in nervousness at seeing his wings puff up in alarm.
"Was that.. was that a chirp?" He yed you, his pupils dilated as you took a step back with a smile.
"I.. I dont know? Maybe they are out there singing." You rolled your eyes and sweated when he towered over you as you kinda protected the nightingale inside the box with your body.
Yet the chirps intensified...
"There is a bird in here." Hawks more accused than asked as you giggled in nervousness once again.
"A bird? Why would a bird be-" the nightingale manage to escape the box and tweaked at both of you "...here."
"What is he doing in here?" He asked, if you didn't know Keigo enough, you could assume he was... unpleasant.
That's why you were so hesitant on showing the little nightingale to him in the first place when he showed up. You werent blind, and knew Keigo had some bird attics that showed up here and there. It wasn't as frequent as it would be however he was resting if the commission hadn't somehow put their hands on it. But Keigo didn't hold much strings around you. So... you could clearly see that your boyfriend wasn't happy when another one of "his kind", especially a male, he could tell somehow it was a male by the chirping dont ask why, was beneath the same rooftop as him with his partner alone.
"Is here because he is injured Kei, he needs some treatment." You cupped your hands together for the nightingale climb in it as Hawks hlardd holes at the little thing.
"Take him to the vet or something kid, this ain't a clinic." You flinched at his words but still remained strong.
"No I am not." You said "I dont know if they are going to sacrifice him or not Kei, I cant take chances."
"Do you even know how to take care of a bird in the first place dove?!" He asked, hands up as his wings puffed even more which made you snort and arch an eyebrow at him as the fella in your hands chirped.
"Well, I do have some knowledge of wings. And have to take care of one on daily basics." You giggled at the expression of shock and insulted Keigo did before walking off and leaving him groaning and sulking at knowing you wouldn't get rid of that street bird...
.
.
"Keigo Takami." He froze when he heard his full name coming from your mouth "Put that phone down. That little bird is going to stay until it gets better." He did just as you said with an eyeroll before pouting in anger at seeing the bird at your shoulder.
That's his place to put his chin on and snuggle your neck with his face. His.
"And you have to carry that thing whenever you go now? That must suck." He tried to joke, leaning with crossed arms on the kitchen counter as before his face completely fell as you simply chuckled and said it didn't bother you at all.
"Seriously?" He asked in disbelief before grabbing his mug taking a few gulps before you widened your eyes and giggling "What are you laughing at?"
"Is just that mug was full of water early and maybe our little friend may have took a bath in it." Your boyfriend stood up so fast and soon you heard disgusting noises of vomiting .
"For god's sake KEIGO I WASHED IT!"
"I DONT CARE THAT THING SHOULDN'T BE BATHING ON MY STUFF WHAT THE HECK?!"
You sighed, waiting for your boyfriend to be back as you feed the little bird with some seeds carefully, soon being met with Keigo, still brushing his teeth.
"Drama king." You chuckled as he groaned "You know he is not a thing Kei, is a nightingale."
"Great knowing it." He said with a mouthful of toothpaste before spitting into the trash, saying something about not dirtying his bathroom with other birds germs or something.
He looked at you a bit in defeat at seeing you feeding the bird as you noticed his wings drooping a bit.
"What is wrong now bird brain?" You giggled at his expression.
"You should be feeding me ... your boyfriend." You snorted before picking a sunflower seed and showing it to him.
"I thought you didn't liked this stuff?" Yoh asked cheekily as he groaned.
"There is chicken, takoyaki, nuggets heck everything that I eat!"
The bird chirped and you nodded thoughtfully as he stared at you in confusion.
"Cannibalism. I agree."
"Oh cmon I thought we were over this..." he sighed before getting something from the fridge as he scowled at the chirps following after.
.
.
.
He glared at the bird chirping a song as you hummed in delight at the sound, staring lovely at the nightingale.
"Oh cmon Kei!" You poked his cheeks which was puffed "You have to admit is a amazing sound! Nightingales are famous for that!"
"Hawks are famous for other things too y'know?" He grumbled before widening his eyes at seeing you werent giving him attention, instead grabbing your phone and recording the nightingale's chirping.
"Hm? What did you say Kei?" You looked up at him with that smirk which made him scoff and stood up with crossed arms and going to the kitchen.
You stiffled your giggled, going to your pouting boyfriend and hugging him lovingly after putting the injured bird back to safety.
"You're really jealous huh?" You carresed his chest as he breathed in and out, cheeks red at being so obvious about his feelings.
"Is a form of flirting birds singing to their mates. That little shit." He mumbled, earning you a laugh that made him smile as feeling you peppering kisses all over his neck and jawline before he caught your lips with his.
You broke apart with a goofy smile as he chuckled before deadpanning at hearing chirps before puffing and straightening his wings on all glory before shouting at the nightingale:
"GO GET YOURSELF A PARTNER! THIS ONE IS TAKEN YOU PIECE OF CRAP!"
You never laughed so hard in your life. A sound that, for Keigo at least, was far more beautiful than any chirping, singing or melody on this whole world.
.
.
.
After a few days you saw Keigo's hatred for the nightingale easing slowly but surely. Yet you never thought that coming home late on one of Keigo's day off, you would see your boyfriend, layed on the couch with a finger up holding the bird he claimed to hate it and whistling some similiar tone along with the nightingale's chirping.
You stared in shock yet awe at the look of your boyfriend directed to the bird as the sounds came out of his lips before chuckling.
"Your wing soon will be better by the looks of it. Isn't (Y/n) a great nurse?" He mumbled, a sadness deep down on his gaze as he saw the bird clapping the wing that wasn't wrapped up "You got freedom and my dove's attention bud, how could you and (Y/n) not expect me to get jealous?" He chuckled sadly as you frowned, walking slowly towards him, pretending to not overheard his monologue.
"Hey pretty thing, back already?" His cheeky smile was back as you looked at it in awe before kneeling in front of the couch he was layed on and kissing him deeply, making him close his eyes in bliss and pull you closer with his free hand by the neck.
You broke apart as he panted with a glossy yet pleased look. Ignoring the chirps for a bit, you carresed his golden looks as he closed his eyes with a smile.
"Redeeming yourself for giving attention to this bird and not me for these past few weeks?" He murmured happily yet drowsily as you giggled and kissed his forehead softly.
"You could say that bird brain." You stopped for a bit, hearing him whine miserably for you to get back, cupping your hands for the bird to get in.
"Cmon..." he whined, arm dropped over his face as the other rested on him until he felt you tugging on his shirt.
"Just get up lazy, I'm giving you all the attention you want." At this, you saw his golden eyes practically glow in bliss as he stood up as fast as he could.
.
.
.
He stretched his arms as he sitted up on the bed. Hair untamed and eyes unfocused until they dropped on the bird that had exited his box and was flapping both of his wings. Both.
"Huh. You look all better." He smirked as he felt you shift and rest your chin on his shoulder with a drowsy look.
"Who is better?" You mumbled before he pointed at the bird jumping and trying to take flight.
"Your friend there." You squealead as hs chuckled, grabbing the nightingale in one hands as he unwrapped the the made up sling as he waited patiently for the little fella to flap its wings and fly just a few centimeters above his palm.
"Cmon dove." He ushered you to follow him on the balcony as he had a gentle hold on the nightingale "Go little buddy, being stuck on a unknown place forever isn't goog for anyone."
And with a little movement of his hand, the nightingale took flight with beautiful chirps that made you smile but soon look at your boyfriend with a sad smirk as he watched the little bird fly away.
It wasn't sadness because he got attached to the nightingale. It was because that, even a small bird as he, could be free and not him. A grow up man that had a partner but was still caged by the comission...
You carresed his arm before hugging it and placing a sweet kiss to his cheek which brought his attention back to you.
"How about some hot cocoa my handsome? You still got some minutes stuck with me until you go to work." You said softly in Hope's to cheer him up.
He looked at you in some sorta of shock before chuckling and bringing you close enough to him to hear his heart beat and feel his warm yet chapte lips on your forehead.
"Being stuck with you is the only way that keeps me going to be honest."
part 1 I have multiple alien planets, but the things is I want to to be similiar in earth as in 200 countries, 5000 ethnic groups, 6500 languages, varied climate/terrain/politics. Part of the story is still on earth and obviously as a whole, 99.9999% of stuff on earth isn't even getting used, but we know there is more and sometimes there are little hints. That is stuff we know from real life and generally doesn't need explanation. Example, a character says "We borrowed this from the Russians."
Part 2 Regardless of what is really important, what we know and doesn't need explanation is a lot because we figure readers generally understand--or they can google. Hell, there could even be lots of subtle culture references as well. Anyway, depending on the reader's knowledge, it can enhance the reader's understanding in various and subtle ways. But when I do things similiar in alien planets, it makes no sense and requires extra explanation to fill the details. So, basically useless.
Part 3 Thus it seems I'm unable to fully give the type of experience as when using earth as pretty much everything needs to be important to the story. Unless there's another way to do this so I can make my alien planets seem so much more than what's actually focused on without the needless exposition? It feels like at best I could try to mention a few things but it could never feel as vast as earth does. Perhaps maybe I just need numbers?
Reminder that if your question doesn’t fit in a single ask box, you should use /SUBMIT instead.
I have had a few questions in the past which are very similar to this one, [HERE] is about how to introduce invented elements of secondary worlds (stuff that doesn't exist in the real world but has been made up for the story), [HERE] is about how and why we might include extra details about the places that a character is visiting, [HERE] deals with establishing what a 'normal' day in an invented setting is like, and [HERE] is about ways of thinking about worldbuilding, and how much you need to know vs how much the characters know.
So it is a fairly common shortcut, in scifi writing, and scifi film writing in particular, to portray alien planets as kind of 'one thing' settings. Here is the desert planet, and there is the dessert planet, and over there is the Evil planet, and there's the cute jungle teddy bear planet moon. This can be useful if you're making a film or story where you just want the different worlds to work as shorthand for certain ideas 'shitty home world', 'the seat of democracy', 'the swamp where Yoda lives' etc.
But it is very simplistic, and obviously looking at Earth, as you've said, there's a vast array of different climates, cultures, people, languages etc. We do tend to simplify the way that we portray Earth in film and stories, as well--think about, say, Australia being largely signified by the Opera House/ Harbour Bridge, and the Outback™, or the UK being Big Ben and the houses of parliament, or the USA being a vast stretch of corn fields between New York and Hollywood.
So how do we effectively give the sense of a world being bigger than the particular spot that we happen to find ourselves in?
First off, you need to have background information about the world that you're building. If you know what the major cities are, what the main continents are, if your alien world has countries, or if it has a singular centralised system of government--or is it divided into city states? or is it divided into time zones? or is it divided into... etc
Think about how your characters conceptualise their world, and their place in it. Do they think about the world, with all its variety, as a single vibrant whole? Or do they think of 'us on this continent, and them over on that continent'?
How does trade work on this world? Do they have extensive trade networks among the various cities/ countries/ regions? Or do they rely on off-world suppliers for various things?
What kind of cultural exchange is common among these different areas, and what are the cultural touchstones that your characters might be familiar with, or interact with on a daily basis?
As with the examples I gave in the first linked post above, it is less about providing the readers with an exact view of how the politics and interactions of the various places function, and more about demonstrating what that means in practice for the characters.
Say there's a certain kind of fruit that is PROTAGONIST's mother's favourite, and she spends all day searching the hypermarket for one to surprise her mother with for her birthday, but turns out there's none of that fruit available because it's all from OTHER REGION, and there's a war on, or a volcano has erupted and interrupted trade, or the shuttle crews are on strike and so the fruit can no longer be transported down from the moon.
If your protag's favourite pop group is from a polar region and only produces music six months out of the year, because the other six months they have to work with their community to produce supplies for the long dark winter, that tells us something about the way that polar community is organised, and how it interacts with the rest of the world.
What else can we think about when constructing alien planets/ secondary worlds?
It can be difficult to think 'outside the box' of the culture that we're immersed in. It's very easy to slip into thinking that we're doing things the 'correct' way, and if someone else somewhere else does stuff different, that's weird, wrong, or sinister. Often it can be just a different way of doing things that gives the solution that the person is after.
I think it can be very helpful to read books about ancient history, especially stuff about societies that no longer exist, because a lot of the assumptions that we make about the way the world currently works are less useful when we look at ancient history. There are some extremely varied ways of approaching society and culture and a whole lot of stuff which isn't immediately obvious, but which we can understand by looking at the vast differences between ancient societies.
Well written history books can really help you get the sense of how societies form, and how culture develops, and some of the forces involved in cross cultural relations. Also, there are some great examples from the ancient world, of, for example, the various different Ancient Greek societies, and how each of them thought of themselves as 'doing culture the best', of their neighbouring hellenistic states of 'doing culture not quite as well' and of everyone who didn't speak greek properly as barbaric outsiders.
At the moment I'm reading Philip and Alexander: Kings and Conquerors by Adrian Goldsworthy, and I think one of the things that has struck me as super interesting is the difference between how the Greeks vs the Persians organised their societies, and the way that they thought about and approached warfare.
So what are the basic questions we're working with?
-What is the protagonist/ focalising character's relationship to the world? Were they born on-world? Are they adult settlers? Are they traders passing through? Has the character travelled to other places on the world, or have they mostly stayed in their home city/ area?
-How do the protag/ focalising characters think of the other places in the world that they are not currently visiting? (ie, I am in Sydney, Australia, what do I think of Boston, USA, or Paris, France? Big cities with a Reputation, I probably know something about. Small towns or cities I may or may not be familiar with, depending on my life experience or interests)
-How do the material goods which are needed for daily life pass around the world? Are certain goods only available from certain areas? Are there Events happening which may disrupt supply routes? Are there cultural elements which may cause friction in trade?
-What kinds of cultural export or exchange happen on this world? Is there a particular city which is well known for its entertainment production? (Hollywood, California--movies, New York City--the print publishing industry) Does this mean that portrayals of the rest of the world are skewed by the perspectives of that place? (Remember, Australia is just a bridge, an opera house, and red dirt!)
There's always going to be a gap between what your characters know, or are aware of, and what is 'actually' happening in the world of your story, but as long as you have the information decided, and can write the world consistently and with sensory and suggestive details, the reader can and will pick up the puzzle pieces and fit them together.
It's a complex problem, but it's one that can produce interesting complex settings.
I hope this helps!
Very specific thoughts. I started Doctor Who with season 5 so I think I have a lot of nostalgia about that era, but the thing is that Moffat really isn't showrunner material. He can write a beginning that intrigues you and an ending that makes you cry, but he skimps on the details. Like I was excited to see The Doctor and River Song's love story but by the end I was like, 'did I miss an episode or something' because I felt like they told us how epic they'd be but failed to show us the love. And I like Amy and Rory as individuals but I feel like Amy was just marrying him because she didn't know what to do with her life. And like the sexism. Who knew not wanting to take your spouse's name meant you were childish.
lol i am so triggered by anyone starting dw with season 5 😂 moffat's misogyny was always lurking in his writing (weird ass classism and sexism in girl in the fireplace, shunting martha out of the way entirely for some white oc during blink, everything about river song in the library episodes) but he was able to ride it out because he had a great showrunner in rtd, who despite his flaws was far better at keeping things grounded imo.
I love a lot about season five but season six pushed me to my limits lol. every woman moff wrote lived for the doctor - their lives revolved around him. and you can argue that the companions don't need the fleshed out families and regular lives that rtd gave them but I just find rose, martha and donna a million times more relatable and believable than amy, river and clara (never watched bill so I can't comment on her). I think moffat was going for amy in particular being very much like a fantasy character in a fairy tale, which works really well in s5 because all of the mystery and weirdness was new, but he just doesn't know how to bring it all together in a way that makes any kind of sense imo. which is why the climax of river's story in s6 failed so hard for me. ironically the best parts of amy's story for me came in season 7 because she kind of felt more... idk... like a real person instead of a fantasy, and also like I loved every river and amy scene ever like more mama daughter scenes plsss
clara felt refreshingly real after amy left when they weren't pushing the mystery nonsense. ad I don't even mind mystery! bad wolf is one of my favorite arcs ever of anything, but that is always about rose taking control of her life and making her own choices instead of like with clara being the puzzle box for the doctor to solve without her knowledge.
I stopped watching after the first few episodes of season nine but I heard actually moffat's last season was his best, which is great because I was seriously worried about how he would treat a Black lesbian. maybe someday I will go back and finish the show but honestly moffat killed doctor who for me, and it is hard for me to go back to something like that.
also river and the doctor's love story makes zero sense when all is said and done lmao like why does moff always write these little girls falling for the doctor 🤮🤮🤮
anyway i just got off work so idk if this is coherent lmao but thanks for sharing your thoughts because i always like to hear them
