mackerel - a domestic interlude
Tumblr media
pairing: miya osamu x f! reader wc: 616 genre: fluff, fluff, fluff warnings: none
a/n: my submission for the ‘love found in ordinary days’ collab!!!
Tumblr media
Miya Osamu falls for you hook, line and sinker, when he wakes up to the smell of perfectly grilled mackerel.
His nose leads him out of bed, into the kitchen where he finds you dressed in a yellow apron, a wide smile on your face.
“Good morning ‘Samu”, you chirp, setting the plate in front of him. “Food? You must be hungry.”
He can’t remember the last time someone actually cooked for him - other than the holidays when he returns home and allows his okaa-san to cook up a storm for ‘Tsumu and him. The fact that he runs a successful restaurant has made everyone assume he’d be responsible for anything kitchen-related, cooking suppers for ‘Tsumu when he comes over to complain about his latest awful date, heck, he can’t even count on two hands the number of times he’s whipped up romantic dinners to satisfy his dates.
No one has taken it on themselves to cook for him. At least - no one, until you.
It was supposed to be a trial run - you moving in with him. It made sense. You’re stuck working from home, his apartment is larger than yours, and it’s a good chance to see if you can stand him and his living habits and his workaholic tendencies and a stray ‘Tsumu dropping in every once in a while.
“Is everything alright, ‘Samu?”
He shakes his head to clear his churning thoughts.
“Itadakimasu”, he says, clapping his hands together, bowing slightly over his bowl of rice. The first bite and he already has to stop himself from tearing up. Mackerel is a basic dish - a staple of a traditional Japanese breakfast, but it invokes fond memories of waking up early for school just so he can chat quietly with his okaa-san as she pan fries the fish to serve it alongside a piping bowl of rice, a thick roll of tamagoyaki and steaming miso soup.
“Doll - we gotta serve this at our wedding.”
There’s a clatter in the sink, and he winces as you drop his precious kitchen knife. You spin around to stare at him, wide-eyed.
Wait a minute. Wedding?
You both spend a few moments gaping at each other like fish. It would be easy for him to laugh it off as a slip of his tongue, but he suddenly realises he doesn’t want to. He wants to wake up to the smell of mackerel, cook your favourite dishes, curl up beside you in bed every night. He wants to listen to you hum your silly, made up songs as you sort the recycling, fold the laundry, celebrate with you in good times, be your first port of call when you’re sad.
He wants to build a home with you, come home to you everyday.
“Yeah”, he says, clearing his throat gruffly. “We should serve this at our wedding.”
An impish grin appears on your face. “I wasn’t aware we were getting married. Did I miss the wedding invite?”
“I’ll send ya a google invite, that good enough for ya, brat?” he grumbles playfully, but drops to one knee before you anyway.
“Marry me”, he breathes, taking your hand in his. “I don’t have a ring yet, but I’ll take ya to pick one out when the shops open, and ya can just move the rest of ya shit in since yer lease is expiring anyway, and we could be happy together - forever, if you’ll have me.”
It’s not the most graceful proposal - but that doesn’t matter because you launch yourself at him, peppering his face with kisses anyway.
“Tsumu’s gonna complain that we’re serving mackerel at our wedding instead of fatty tuna.”
“Screw Tsumu”, Osamu replies breezily. “I’m gettin’ married to ya, not him.”

Borscht
After the end of Viet Nam War, more opportunities for bright Vietnamese youths to enter colleges and universities in the Soviet Union were given out as a way to reinforce Soviet power within the communist allies as well as to help us rebuild our devastated country. Dad was one of those bright students. He got flying colours in the national university examination and a few months later, my dad at the time – a barely 18-year-old teen – first set foot on the unfamiliar land of Odessa without any friend, relative, any acquaintance to keep company. He could not afford to go back home, and so Odessa became his home instead.
During my childhood time, it seemed that I had always known Ukraine. It was through the music on the radio, the stories that were told, the aged black and white photos of Dad submerged in piles of snow that I found while digging through old boxes that I found myself transcending the boundaries of time and space to fall in love with the land of Odessa.
Dad would very often bring home Russian treats he bought from a friend or from local Russian food shops. Smoked salmon, pickled herring, Pirozhkis and black rye bread were very common on our dinner table, and although they strongly clashed our usual culinary taste, me and my sister had learnt time by time to enjoy their estranged presence. We would eventually have pickled herring as essential grocery item on our monthly shopping list, and Mom would fix a simple smoked salmon sandwich with pickles on Vietnamese baguette for me to bring to school every once in a while.
Back in high school when I was taking French classes, everyday was triple-shifting from 7AM to 8PM of studying for me, and I barely got an hour in between to eat or rest. One day when Dad was picking me up from school, he asked if I wanted to eat fried rice, Dad style! I was so skeptical, “Dad you barely use the kitchen except for making rotisseries”; of course, I was not vocal with the thought, Dad would have been very upset with the comment, and so I just nodded in approval. After that conversation, Dad would go grocery shopping with Mom during the weekends and everyday I went to school, he would spend half an hour or so, chopping the most tedious, devilish vegetables in this entire world just to make me a box of Salo fried rice with Chinese sausages and veggies. A senior from my French class, whom I usually shared my food with, adored “Vy’s fried rice”, and once she complimented on Mom’s cooking skills. “Mom’s a great cook!” I said, “But it’s Dad who prepares these meals for me.” She looked at me oddly, and also in awe.
It’s funny how now that I look back when I was a kid, I did not understand how the nutritious lunchboxes my parents made for me with love and care, could isolate me from my peers so much.
Borscht used to be my dad’s favourite dish back in the 1980s when he was studying marine engineering in Odessa, Ukraine. An earthy Ukrainian beet soup simmered with veggies and meat, simply served along with sour cream and signature Ukrainian black rye bread was the food that kept Dad cozy during the loneliest months of cold Odessa. Almost forty years later when it was just a couple of days before I set off to study in Western Canada, my dad took me to a niche Russian restaurant near my old elementary school. First time having borscht, slurping on the soup while listening to Dad retelling stories about his college life as a Viet student in the bone-chilling Odessa; I did not realize that forever ingrained in me is the reminiscence for an unknowable yet nostalgic place to which I have never been.
When a new Ukrainian restaurant opened up in the neighbourhood that we lived, I insisted my roommate on checking out the place whenever we could. Vegan borscht was the first thing that I ordered. Being 19 residing on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in Canada, I did not feel as such. I was in the shoes of a 18-year-old teen studying on the cold land of Odessa, hundreds of layers of snowfalls in between and thousands of miles away from home; I was my 15-year-old self sitting on the bench in my French school yard, and it was in the embrace of the Indian-almond trees, with the empty lunchbox in hands did I cry for hours because I did not have the courage to tell Mom and Dad I was falling behind in class.
Rarely did I make a random wish, but in that moment, I wished that I could have enjoyed the food with Sis, with Mom, and with Dad.
Vancouver, June 2021.

1. What’s the last thing you ate? Shawarma. It was a usual meal of mine at school so I’ve been missing it a lot during this quarantine, and I was happy when my dad got me a couple ones yesterday.
2. What’s your favourite cheese? I haven’t been super experimental when it comes to cheese mainly because the better ones are a little expensive and I’m more willing to spend my money on other foods...but the best one I’ve had is feta.
3. What’s your favourite fish? My favorite cooked or grilled fish is tilapia and eel; as for raw fish I love tuna.
4. What’s your favourite fruit? I don’t really like fruit but I’m open to eating avocado-flavored things like shakes and cheesecake; and I’m okay with strawberry-flavored candy hahaha.
5. When, if ever, did you start liking olives? I’ve never liked olives. I take them out of my pizza and such.
6. When, if ever, did you start liking beer? I never *liked* beer but sometimes I’ll have a bottle if and only if it’s to socialize at a party. I just keep the grimace to myself lol because I personally never found it good. I had my first beer at Marielle’s debut, four years ago.
7. When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? High school. That was when my palate started to expand and I wanted to try being more adventurous with food. I got into shellfish pretty early on and my mom even used to buy a kilo of mussels just for me.
8. What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make? I love my dad’s laksa, risotto, curries, and chicken wings. My mom doesn’t cook much but I do like her spaghetti.
9. What’s the native specialty of your hometown? My city doesn’t have native food of its own; and I’m not sure about my province’s specialtes either only because cuisines from other provinces are far more popular. I can say though that most visitors who come to the country often try adobo, sinigang, kare-kare, and bulalo.
10. What’s your comfort food? Cheeseburgers, samgyeopsal, pad thai, and chicken wings.
11. What’s your favourite type of chocolate? Milk chocolate. And it gets a lot of flak because it’s not actually chocolate, but I do enjoy the flavor of white chocolate too.
12. How do you like your steak? Rare.
13. How do you like your burger? I like mine with caramelized onions, a mayo-based sauce, and brioche buns; barbecue sauce or jalapeños are add-ons I have no problem being put in my burger. I don’t like tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce.
14. How do you like your eggs? Scrambled if on toast; omelette with cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms, and bell peppers if with rice; and obviously, poached if on top of an Eggs Benedict. I don’t have a preferred style for eggs.
15. How do you like your potatoes? As French fries or mojos.
16. How do you take your coffee? If someone is making the coffee for me, I request for lots of cream and sugar. I’d drink any kind of coffee but black. If I’m at a coffee shop I typically get caramel macchiato.
17. How do you take your tea? I enjoy lemonade iced tea. I don’t really like hot tea.
18. What’s your favourite mug? I suppose my favorite is the only mug I own, which is a white mug that changes colors depending on the temperature of the drink inside.
19. What’s your biscuit or cookie of choice? I can’t stand biscuits anymore because those are what my grandma/mom packed for my recess nearly everyday throughout grade school. I don’t like store-brought cookies either because they taste super processed, but my favorite as a kid were the Presto peanut butter cookies.
20. What’s your ideal breakfast? Garlic rice, a packed omelette, and hashbrowns if I’m somewhere fancy. Scrambled eggs and hotdogs when I’m at home.
21. What’s your ideal sandwich? Monte Cristo or banh mi.
22. What’s your ideal pizza: Quattro formaggi. If we’re talking more experimental pizzas, barbecue pizza is a guilty pleasure.
23. What’s your ideal pie (sweet or savoury)? I’m not a big pie person but I do love savory a lot more, like chicken pot pie. I think most of the sweet pies out there are fruit-based anyway.
24. What’s your ideal salad? Spicy tuna salad. I’ve been having such a craving for it :(
25. What food do you always like to have in the fridge? We always have white bread, eggs, my mom’s cranberry juice, and veggies.
26. What food do you always like to have in the freezer? In the freezer we never run out of various meats and frozen meal packs, like frozen bangus, hotdogs, chicken nuggets, French fries, etc. We also often have ice cream, but it’s not a must-have for us obviously.
27. What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? Pasta, canned food like luncheon meat and corned beef, cup noodles, various condiments like soy sauce and fish sauce, 3-in-1 coffee.
28. What spices can you not live without? I can’t cook but I do know I like salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin. I’m sure I’m missing other essential ones lol
29. What sauces can you not live without? Sriracha, bagoong, banana ketchup, gochujang, peanut sauce, gravy, barbecue sauce, aioli, mayonnaise.
30. Where do you buy most of your food? My parents don’t have a supermarket preference; they just go to wherever is most convenient for them at the moment. Once I start doing my own grocery shopping though I would rather go to a supermarket where they’d have a wider selection for foreign foods, like those that would have Pop-Tarts and sriracha sauce. Just the foodie in me that constantly has to have food from other cultures.
31. How often do you go food shopping? My parents do the groceries once every two or three weeks, I think.
33. What’s the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own? Aside from the obvious ref or cooking range, probably the coffee maker. Not sure how much it cost my parents but it’s supposed to be branded haha.
34. What’s the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? Dad bought a couple of pans because he didn’t like how our old ones were starting to get too many scratches.
35. What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? Refrigerator. So many things would spoil without it...that’s why when we get blackouts the first thing we worry about is how long the ref would stay cold.
36. How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? I’ve only done it once.
37. What’s the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients?
38. What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig and poultry? Crocodile, carabao, lamb.
39. What’s the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? Don’t remember exactly when but it has to be sometime recently. I’m not too grossed out by this.
40. What’s the last time you ate something you’d picked in the wild? I have never done this.
41. Arrange the following in order of preference: Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Sushi – Indian, Thai, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican. This question is a teeny bit annoying and a little offensive. How would you like it if I referred to American food as ‘ribs’ lol
42. Arrange the following in order of preference: Vodka, Whiskey, Brandy, Rum – Vodka, rum, (some) whiskey. I don’t drink brandy because that’s what my grandpa, who had alcohol issues, used to drink.
43. Arrange the following in order of preference: Garlic, Basil, Lime, Mint, Ginger, Aniseed – Aniseed, garlic, basil, ginger, lime, mint.
44. Arrange the following in order of preference: Pineapple, Orange, Apple, Strawberry, Cherry, Watermelon, Banana. –
45. Bread and spread: I don’t really munch on this particular food. Toast and butter is enough for me.
46. What’s your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? It’s either KFC or Jollibee. In KFC I get a Zinger and a brownie; in Jollibee, I usually order the chicken-spaghetti set, large fries, and a Yum Burger. If they have tuna pie on the menu I’d get that too. My appetite gets exceptionally large when it comes to Jollibee hahahaha.
47. Pick a city. What are the best dining experiences you’ve had in that city? I no longer remember what exactly I ate but I had a blaaaast eating in Bali. I also had a sushi platter in Fukuoka that I’ll never forget.
48. What’s your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? I don’t drink regularly but if I’m out with friends and we want to chill after a tiring day, we get a pitcher of a mixed drink.
49. What’s the next thing you’ll eat? Eggs and hotdogs for breakfast. Probably with bread.
50. Are you hungry now? A little bit, considering it’s nearly 10 and I still haven’t had breakfast.
51. Do you eat your breakfast everyday? I’ve been having it everyday now because I’ve been home for...most of the year...sigh. But I skipped it all the time when I was in school because getting to class on time and having a clean attendance record mattered to me more than filling up my stomach. 52. At what time do you have breakfast? On weekdays I have it between 9-10 AM. On weekends when my parents are home, we have brunch instead at around 10:30-11 AM because they wake up late.
53. At what time do you have lunch? I normally skip lunch now. In school I just had tiny eating breaks throughout the day, but I didn’t have lunch per se.
54. What do you have for lunch? My usual purchases were instant noodles/kwek-kwek, tapsilog from Rodic’s, or shawarma rice. Thrived on these three for my entire college life.
55. At what time do you have dinner? 7-8 PM, depending on whenever my dad is finished cooking.
56. What do you have for dinner? My dad likes changing up our dishes everyday :) It’s one of my favorite things about quarantine. Outside of the quarantine, I’ve never had a main dinner dish.
57. Do you light candles during dinner? No.
58. How many chairs are there in your dining room and who sits in the main chair? 6 chairs. We don’t have a ‘main’ chair that’s larger than the rest, but my dad is the one who sits on the chair on one end of the dining table, or what we call the kabisera in Filipino. My mom, siblings, and I sit on either side of him.
59. Do you eat and drink using your right hand or the left one? I use my right hand for the spoon and my left hand for the fork. I drink with my right hand most of the time.
61. Mention the veggies that you like most: Broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, asparagus, string beans. Idk what eggplants and bell peppers are but I like those too.
62. What fruit and vegetable do you like the least? Cucumber and ampalaya. 63. You like your fruit salad to have more: Air. Hahahaha I do not like fruit salads.
64. You prefer your vegetable salad to contain more: I love vegetables but don’t really eat vegetable salads? I don’t think I’ve even heard of those.
65. What’s your favourite sandwich spread? Whatever goes on banh mi.
66. What’s your favourite chocolate bar? Whittaker’s peanut butter chocolate.
67. What’s your favourite dessert? I really love macarons, cupcakes, and cheesecake.
68. What’s your favourite drink? Just water. Other drinks make me fuller more quickly.
69. What’s your favourite snack? Pringles, French fries, corndogs...anything deep-fried, really.
70. What’s your favourite bubble gum flavour? Strawberry, or just the original bubblegum flavor.
71. What’s your favourite ice cream flavour? Salted caramel, queso real, or cookies and cream.
72. What’s your favourite potato chip flavour? Original or sour cream and onion.
73. What’s your favourite soup? Miso. Have to have it whenever I have Japanese food.
74. What’s your favourite pizza? Already answered this, but I will always order quattro formaggi if I see it on a menu.
75. What’s your favourite type of dish? I have lots of favorites, but I think chicken curry takes the cake for me.
76. What food do you hate? Fruits, any dessert with fruits.
77. What’s your favourite restaurant? Yabu. It’s a Japanese restaurant that doesn’t even serve sushi (because I’m still ticked off by that sushi question lol).
78. Do you eat homemade food, or food delivered from outside? These days I eat food cooked by either parent. But when I’m on my own, I buy my food.
80. Who cooks at home? My dad does most of the time. My mom will make breakfast on the weekends.
81. What kind of diet (e.g. low-fat, high-fiber, high-carbohydrate, balanced diet etc.) do you have? I’m not on any.
82. How do you keep yourself fit? I just moderate my food intake in general and make sure I stop eating once I feel full. I don’t work out or count calories and stuff.

A Walk in the Park

Chapter 4
Read Chapter 3 Here
Pairings: Chris Evans x Reader
Warnings: A couple of curse words, fluff, mention of character death.
This is purely for fun. Comments and reblogs always appreciated. If you would like to be tagged, please let me know.
Even after your late night out, you still had trouble sleeping in. It was seven in the morning on a Saturday and you couldn’t sleep another wink. Pulling the corner of the quilt off your body, being careful not to jilt your ankle, you gingerly eased out of bed. I can always take a nap later. Your stomach grumbled alerting you that it also did not sleep in on the weekends. After fixing yourself a bowl of cereal and plopping down on your couch, you turned on your television. Saturday mornings were meant for local news and breakfast. One of your little pleasures was watching the news even if they did repeat the stories every fifteen minutes.
After breakfast, you decided to get back in bed to rest and elevate your ankle. You had a couple of texts from Victoria that you responded to. She was mostly just asking how last night was. You kept it vague but promised to call her later. Seeing that it was after ten back in Minnesota, you decided to give your sister in law Vanessa a call. Even if Caleb was no longer with you, his sister would always be your sister. Besides, Vanessa had given you your eight-year-old niece Abby who you adored and probably missed the most. Vanessa is the older sister you never had. You were an only child, so you longed to have that friend that you could share all your secrets with and know that they would always be there. When you learned that Caleb had a sister, you begged to meet her right away. Vanessa, being five years older than you and Caleb, often took on the motherly role. Not that she meant to, but she was married, had a house, had an established career, she couldn’t help herself but give out advice. You were each other’s rock when Caleb passed. She and her husband Brent made up their spare bedroom for you and you stayed with them for weeks. It was too hard to sleep in yours and Caleb’s bed. You’re still not sure how you managed to after moving back home.
After the line rang a few times, your niece Abby picked up the phone. “Aunt Y/N!” She all but screamed into the phone.
Yanking the phone slightly away from your ear in case an additional scream was coming. “Yes, Abby, it’s me. I’ve missed you oh so much. Do you miss me?”
“Everyday. When are you coming home?” She asked.
Oh, she breaks my heart.
“Not for a while yet Bug. I promise you’ll be the first to know when I do.“
A small huff is given. “Ohhhh kay.”
“Could I talk to your mom please?”
“Mommmm! Aunt Y/N is on the phone!” She yells as you once again pull the phone away from your ear.
There’s several moments of silence. It’s evident that she’s abandoned the phone on the counter.
“Hey you.” Vanessa said.
“I can’t believe you guys still have a land line and you actually answer it.” You tease.
“Why don’t you just call my cell phone like a normal person?” She answers back. It’s a game you both play every time you call.
“And miss the chance to talk to my niece, no way! She never answers your cell.”
“If she didn’t manage to drop or lose the last two iPhones I’ve had, she would be allowed to answer it.” She said with a laugh.
“Oh boy. I do miss the adventures of the O’Brien family.” You sighed to yourself mostly. “How’s Brent?”
“He’s doing really well. Busy at work mostly these days. I don’t think I told you, but he got that promotion.” You can tell she’s beaming and you honestly couldn’t happier for them. “He’s taken on more clients so unfortunately he’s gone earlier in the morning. That just means more bus stop duty for me.”
“Vanessa that is great! Not the bus stop duty, but great for Brent. He works his ass off and deserves the success. How are you though? I miss you so much.”
“I’m good. Really good. Of course, I miss you as well. Tell me about California living. I bet you’re sad you moved during the winter and missed most of the snow.”
“Ha Ha. Nah, that’s one thing I don’t miss. I surely don’t miss the salt ring around my jeans from walking in the snow. California is nice. I did underestimate the difficulty of making friends as an adult.” You said with a laugh. “My boss is great and we’ll hangout eventually, when we both aren’t so busy. I told you about that guy at that park, right?” You of course left off his last name. You don’t want the people back home thinking you meet celebrities every day just by walking around LA.
“Yeah. Did something happen there?” A suggestive tone to her voice.
“No. No, nothing like that.”
“Boo.” She said with a little laugh.
“As I was saying. Chris, the guy from the park, he had me over last night with some of his friends and we played some games. It was a lot of fun. I have plans for a girl’s night in a couple of weeks with his friends Emma and Erika.”
“That’s great babe. You deserve this new life. You deserve fun.” Wiping a tear that slowly rolled down your cheek, you smiled.
“Thanks, Vanessa. I did actually call for a reason.”
“Oh yeah? What’s that.”
“What do you say about a girl’s trip of our own? Why don’t you and Abby come out next month. My place is small, but you and Abby can take my bed and I’ll take the couch for a few days. And then I think we should get a nice hotel room for a couple of nights and get spa treatments. I’m sure Abby would love the pampering.” You asked.
“You know your niece too well. Yeah, let me check schedules. Abby’s got a Friday off for a teacher workshop, so I could pull her out for an extra day or two.”
“Yay!” You squealed. OK, just let me know. I’ll have to work out the time off with Victoria, but I know it will pan out. I’m just so excited!”
She laughed. “Love you Y/N. We’ll talk soon.”
“Bye sis. Love you too.”
Shortly after your call, you fell back to sleep for a couple of hours. Not having anything to do for the day and since you were already laying in your big comfy bed, it wasn’t hard to do.
Nonstop ringing interrupted your slumber. Groaning, you reached for your cell with your eyes still closed. “Hello?”
“Y/N, where exactly do you live?” Asked a male’s voice.
“Huh?” Taking the phone away from your ear to see who it was. Chris? Chris is calling you? “Chris?”
“Yeah, it’s me. Where do you live?”
You gave him the street address and told him your entrance was in the back upstairs. “Why though?”
“I’ll see you soon.” He said and then hung up.
What the fuck?
You’re still in your pajamas and you haven’t showered. You know what your hair looks like without even looking. Did you even brush your teeth?! Deciding that was top priority, you stood up, grabbed your crutches and went into your bathroom to brush your teeth. You then attempted to smooth down your hair. Where’s my bra? Making your way back to the living room/bedroom, you scrambled to find a bra. Remembering you tossed it on your couch when you got home last night, you dropped the crutches and grabbed the bra quickly slipping it on. Moments later there was a knock on your door. Hopping on one foot while grabbing onto anything you could in the apartment to steady yourself, you made it to the door successfully. On the other side was a smiling Chris holding several takeout bags.
“Chris.” You said breathlessly. Get a hold of yourself Y/N. “What are you doing here?”
“Lunch. Obviously.” He said while walking past you as you shuffled to the side. He was wearing a pair of loose light blue jeans, a gray tee with a blue jacket over it. His hair was a little disheveled, but almost like it was purposely done so. And of course, still sporting that gorgeous beard. You sighed, you actually sighed out loud.
“O-okay. Um, but why?” You asked.
“Well, you’re injured and I didn’t want you to be on your feet anymore than you have to.” He smiled while setting the bags on your glass coffee table.
“Are others coming?” Peeking out the door to see if anyone was behind him. “That looks like quite a lot of food.”
He sat down on your couch and started pull out paper plates and plastic silverware. “Well, you see, I wasn’t sure what you liked so I stopped at a few places. I figured whatever we don’t eat, you could have for dinner and maybe lunch tomorrow.”
You gingerly made your way to the couch and sat next to him. “I don’t know what to say. This is really sweet. But just so you know, I have a ton of food in the fridge and can totally make something to eat. Or there’s always Uber Eats.” You said with a smirk. “But thank you, this is really nice.”
“But you shouldn’t have to. I’m sure you’re exhausted from being on your feet last night. It’s no big deal. I was hungry anyway.” Chris said with a shrug.
“Well, what do we have here?” You said while looking down and gesturing with your hand.
“Only the finest cuisine. Lemon chicken with white rice and a couple of eggrolls. A couple of slices of pepperoni pizza, New York style of course.”
“Of course.”
“Chicken burrito bowl. Chili cheese fries and a cheeseburger. And a grilled chicken Caesar salad. You know, just in case.”
“That is quite the menu. How many stops did you have to make?”
He waved his hand dismissing your question. “So, what will it be my lady?”
You gave a shy smile. “An eggroll and a slice of pizza.”
He let out a good chuckle and passed you the food. You both dug in sneaking glances his way while you ate in silence. You noticed he did the same. When you were done, he took your trash and walked to the kitchen to throw it in the bin. He then put the remaining food in your refrigerator. “Are you sure you don’t want to bring anything home with you?”
“Nah, I got it for you. Now you don’t have to cook.” Again, throwing you that winning smile.
He sat back down on your couch angling his body toward you so that his knee was partially laying on the couch. You had your ankle on the coffee table on top of a throw pillow.
“I just wanted to make sure you were alright. Not just your ankle, but with what you shared last night.”
Oh, that’s right. I said it. Out loud.
“Yeah. I mean, it’s been two years. I guess it’s not something that you’re ever good with, but life moves on and you just try your best every day. I’m trying every day.”
“Do you want to talk about it all? Could you tell me about him? If you want to. You don’t at all. You can just tell me to leave and I will totally understand.” Said Chris.
“No, I don’t mind. Caleb, my husband, he was my best friend. We met at work when we were both just a year out of college. We ended up in the same training class. I thought he was really cute, so I kept sitting at his table hoping he would notice me.” You said smiling at the memory. “But Caleb was so serious. I don’t think he even noticed me the first two days.” Chris chuckled.
“I remember he had a yellow highlighter and a stack of pens. He would practically write down word for word what the trainer said in his notebook and when we were on a break, he would highlight most of what was written. On the third day, I stood up, walked right up to him, tapped his shoulder and told him to come with me to get coffee. I didn’t ask, I told him.” Chuckling lightly, you looked up to see Chris have a warm smile on his face.
“What did he say?” Chris asked.
“He said OK, stood up, and followed me to the coffee machine. He asked for my number at the end of the day and we were inseparable going forward. He was the kind of guy who was meant to be a husband. He proposed after a year and we were married a year later. We bought a house right away where he made friends with all the guys in the neighborhood. He’d have them over for beers and football, and cookouts. He was the social one in our relationship. There was always an event he was dragging me too. Caleb really got me out of my bubble. And he was an awesome uncle to our niece Abby. She’s so spoiled and that’s mostly thanks to him. He was a really great guy.”
Chris had his hand on your knee and was rubbing it in a soothing way. “He sounds like he was a great man. Thanks for sharing that with me. But, honestly Y/N, I think you are so brave to be starting over in this crazy place. I consider you a friend and I want you to talk to me if you ever need to vent or cry or whatever. I’m here.”
You were touched. Here’s this man who you barely know and he was already becoming a great friend.
“Thanks, Chris. I really appreciate that.”
Chris left a little later and you dragged yourself back to bed. He sent you a goodnight text that night and a good morning text the next morning. That afternoon you sent him a text that you missed Dodger. Yeah, it had only been a day and a half, but you really wished you had a dog to cuddle with. Especially since you were stuck at home.
Chris: I see how it is. You only like me for my dog.
Y/N: Without Dodger, we wouldn’t have met. He brought us together.
Y/N: I’m just jealous you have an automatic cuddle buddy. Do you rent him out?
Chris: I’m pretty sure Dodger would rather be cuddling with you.
Your ankle was feeling better but you still stuck to staying in and using the crutches. You had showered that morning and actually put on real clothes. Well, a knee length flowy dress. You didn’t want to deal with pulling your ankle through pant legs if you could help it. You had just put in your favorite movie, You’ve Got Mail in the DVD player and sat on your couch. Yes, you still owned a DVD player. As the saying goes, if it isn’t broke…As Meg Ryan was getting charmed by Tom Hanks in her book store, you heard a knock on your door. You paused the movie, got up being sure to grab your crutches first and walked to the door. You heard a bark and a smile instantly hit your face. You opened the door to see Chris and Dodger standing there.
“Dodger! You’re here! Come here boy.” You placed one of the crutches against the wall and patted your thigh. Dodger walked up to you and licked your hand a few times before accepting you petting him.
“You know, I come all the way here.”
“Two miles.” You interrupted.
“I drive a full two miles and Dodger gets all the love. No, ‘Hi Chris! I can’t believe you are here!’ Where’s the warm welcome?”
“Hi Chris! I’m so glad you are here! Come here boy.” You said while patting your leg.
Chris let out a loud laugh. He closed your door and walked up to you. You gave him a one-armed hug.
“What are you watching?” He asked.
“Only my favorite movie, You’ve Got Mail. Want to watch?”
“Well, I did bring Dodger here for cuddles, I suppose we can watch while you two cuddle.”
You started on the couch, but frankly your couch wasn’t the largest for two adults with a dog who liked to spread out. You and Dodger moved to your bed while Chris stayed on the couch watching the movie.
“You know, you can still see the screen from the bed. You’re more than welcome to come lay with us and watch.” You were honestly offering in a friendly way. Dodger would be between you both and it was easier to chat when your next to a person and they aren’t having to turn their head to see you from the couch. Yep, a strictly friend like way.
Chris hesitated for a moment. Scratching the back of his head and looking back at you and Dodger. “Alright.” He said while getting up and walking toward your bed. You scooted over and pulled Dodger toward you making room for Chris. He plopped down on the bed and adjusted your pillows making himself comfortable. You both laid in silence watching the movie except for when Chris would let out loud chuckles and an abrupt “oh no” here and there.
When the movie was over, you shut off the TV with the remote and just talked. You talked about your families, vacations you took when growing up, your first cars, and pets. During a few minutes of comfortable silence, you had fallen asleep. Before you knew it, your cellphone alarm was going off indicating it was time to get ready for work. Opening your eyes, you almost tumbled out of bed. Dodger and Chris were asleep next to you. Had your life been a rom-com, his arm would have been thrown over your stomach and your legs would be tangled together. There most certainly wouldn’t have been a dog between you. You were never the snuggle in bed while you slept type anyway. Sure, a little cuddling before sleep was nice, but then you wanted your space. Hence why you had a queen-sized mattress just for you.
He really is beautiful. Why can’t I be that pretty while I sleep? I mean, I could take or leave the snores he’s putting out.
You got up as quietly as you could. Dodger’s head peaked up but then he laid it right back down. You grabbed your clothes for the day and went into the bathroom quietly closing the door. After showering, towel drying your hair and pinning it back, you got dressed. You decided to grab a muffin at the coffee shop rather than making breakfast here.
Sitting on the edge of the bed next to Chris, you gently stroked his arm. “Hey hun, I’m leaving for work.”
He slowly started to stir, blinking his eyes open and closed. He finally turned his head toward you and gave you an easy smile. “Good morning.” He said. The sleep still evident in his voice.
“I’m heading off to work.” He sat up and pulled his legs to the ground. “Take your time. Will you just turn the lock on the doorknob on your way out?”
“Of course.” He grabbed your hand. “Thanks for the fun night, sweetheart.” Your heart fluttered. You squeezed his hand and stood up letting go.
“I’ll talk to you later. Bye Dodger.” You said grabbing your bag, crutches, and headed out the door.
Chris texted you later that day just to say hi. Unfortunately, you were too busy to reply or even notice you had a text. Since you weren’t much help running around doing errands for Colleen or Victoria, you were on paper duty. Entering receipts, submitting invoices, making calls. A lot of these tasks were mostly spread out, but since you were out Friday and didn’t come in on Saturday, it was all getting done today. For once, you and Victoria were on the same schedule. She invited you out for drinks at a restaurant down the street from the office. You talked about the get together at Chris’ place and mentioned the possible date with his friend. She was excited for you and frankly you were too. You told her about Chris spending the night, quick to point out that it wasn’t planned and you both had just fallen asleep. “Y/N, wow. Is something happening there?”
“No, I don’t think so. I think he’s just being a good friend. We’re getting to know each other.” You shrugged your shoulders. You both ordered a couple of appetizers and ended up chatting for a while, not getting home until almost 9 PM.
Reaching your staircase you were startled to see Chris sitting on the stairs with Dodger. “Chris? Did you end up staying all day?” You asked with a giggle.
“Hey Y/N.” Chris getting to his feet he stood out of your way.You started to climb the stairs.
“Do you want to come up?” You asked glancing behind you as you started to reach the top.Chris was quick to follow.
“You’re home late.” He said. Unlocking your door and setting your bag and crutches down before taking a seat on your couch.
“Yeah, my boss and I, Victoria, went out for a couple of drinks. We don’t see much of each other, but since I am on office duty, we had time to catch up.” He nodded, taking a seat next to you. You started up Netflix and passed him the remote. “I picked last night, you pick tonight.”He grabbed the remote from you and started scanning. He decided on the second season of Stranger Things as he said he hadn’t watched the season yet. You were all caught up, but didn’t mind the re-watch. You both sat enjoying the show, chatting between episodes. Chris got up after three episodes to grab a couple of beers from your fridge. It was nice and you were enjoying whatever this friendship was becoming. Chris spent the night again, this time not by accident. It was late and you both decided it was for the best for him to just crash. The next few days were spent texting back and forth. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t enjoy the attention.
Your ankle was mostly better by Friday and you had plans to meet Chris and Dodger at the park. You had gotten their first so you took a seat at one of the benches facing the fountain. Your phone started to ring with a number you hadn’t recognized. Not one to normally answer unknown numbers, since it was a local number you took a chance thinking it could be someone from work. “Hello?”
“Hey, Y/N, it’s Erika’s friend, Tim. How are you?”
“Oh, hi, Tim.” You replied, not realizing Chris had walked up and was right beside you.

It's the weekend, guys, hope you're having a relaxing and enjoyable time! I caught up with B over beers, crispy prawn paste chicken wings, luncheon meat omelette, garlic kailan stirfry and freshly made salted egg yolk fried fish skin, served with rice.
Salted egg yolk sauce/gravy first became popular here a few years ago and good grief, they're SO delicious and addictive whether cooked with crab, chicken, pork ribs or jumbo prawns 🤤 Nowadays, one can buy packs of salted egg yolk fish skin or potato chips from the supermart; having them freshly made is best though!
Tumblr media
Also had a tasty meal with the family. We checked out Hakkon, a healthy food restaurant located at Kinex. I had the salmon mentaiki bowl - salmon sashimi, mentaiki, cherry tomatoes, mashed avocado, cucumbers, seaweed, sea kelp, lettuce and an onsen egg served over rice. It was so yummy!!! 😍
In case you're interested, here's the link to the health benefits of sea kelp, including blood clot reduction, so if you want to try reducing the risk of stroke the natural way, check it out 🙂
Besides eating a variety of nutrient-dense foods (including sea kelp), regular exercise also helps to thin the blood. Whilst they're not surefire ways to prevent chronic illness, it's still helpful to do what we can to take care of ourselves. The same goes for the coronavirus - nothing is 100% guaranteed, but we can still try to keep our resistance levels up by eating well, being active, having adequate rest, as well as getting some sun and fresh air.
Tumblr media
Over our bowl meals, I encouraged my parents, as well as Little Bro and his wifey to take a stroll in the garden at the family home or at nearby parks. Just as we sun our bedding to clear out germs and bacteria, getting a dose of Vitamin D whenever we can is good for us. Plus, it's relaxing to unplug and get away from the hustle and bustle that is daily life. With the current situation, we need this more than ever.
Going strong into February and showing that exercise isn't just about the tired old New Year New You cliché for them are curvy babes such as..........
instagram
Anna like I've never seen her! It's lovely sharing what she's been doing again after so long, especially when I hope to include more visibly plus women leading the active life. With that same determined gleam in her eye, this fiery glamazon completed a gruelling circuit. As always, I'm rooting for her as she inspires more curvy women to get strong and even stronger 👊
instagram
Also visibly plus and equally impressive is reality star Whitney, going down the traditional heavy lifting and squating route. The good news? Her trainers are inclusive and, in her words, 'ALL bodies are welcome.' So if you're looking for a safe space to workout without the risk of ridicule or humiliation - and everyone deserves this - go take a peek at her post!
instagram
Next we have Jolene, using some equipment that I know absolutely nothing about. Told you I don't gym! 😅 She, Anna, Whitney and several other curvy babes know their way around fitness centres and equipment far better than me. You know what? Good for them! If it's an activity which they enjoy, why not?
Finally, me likey likey a good dance so.......
instagram
Starting with Chloe's gentle ballet moves. Here, she improvises so that anyone who wishes to practise at home can do so rather than specially set aside precious time to head to the studio for classes - very helpful for everyday women like me who have our plates full.
instagram
Think this is just another boring old group full of straight size peeps? Look closer and you'll spot the curvy girl executing those moves with the same fluidity and expertise as the rest. Mixed weight dancing is especially enjoyable to watch because of the message of unity behind each performance.
Now speaking of mixed weight dancing... I can't leave out the epitome of finesse now, can I?
instagram
I spy the amazing Amanda LaCount of @amandalacount, upping the flirt-o-meter by another 1,000 volts! ⚡⚡⚡ Smooth as ever, this babe is dancing in Lady Gaga's new Stupid Love video! I just watched that splendid MV on Youtube and wow, the energy is 💥💥💥
Tumblr media
This ol' bird doesn't know what is the current trend that defines 'wellness'. All I know is that it has existed way before social media entered our lives.
During my early formative years, heavy lifting was done by Olympians. Everyday folks took their kids to the park or playground and played games like police-and-thief, hide-and-seek, hopscotch, tiao pi jin (jump rope using a long rope made from rubber bands), got on the swings, slides and seesaws, as well as played sports like badminton, table tennis, cycling, roller skating, canoeing and basketball.
Food-wise, each culture did their own thing. We Chinese had our stirfries, seafood or meat congee with eggs, specialty herbal tonic soups and stews, as well as steamed dishes. We had a slice of cheese or a glass of milk in the morning and before bed. Dessert was fruit served after dinner.
Parents made sure kids did their homework, got adequate play time, some TV or music time, then it was early to bed if we had school the next day.
And that was it. Wellness. None of the fancy shmancy stuff that's so popular on social media, guys. So there's no need for anyone to feel left out; we can all practise varying degrees of it at home without the pressure of following what influencers espouse. It isn't meant to be stressful; otherwise, that defeats the purpose of wellness, doesn't it? 🙂
Till the next post, stay sweet!

Pag-Asa
Alain woke up to the buzzing sound of his alarm clock, still groggy, he lazily stood up as he walked towards his study table to check his calendar. It was a cold Friday morning, he was scheduled to attend his online class for Miss Torres, his adviser and Philosophy teacher at exactly 8 AM. Ten minutes before the class started, he sighed heavily as he saw his backlogs on his to-do list. He immediately opened his laptop, as soon as he checked his Gmail account, he saw a message from his adviser, informing that today is the release of their midterm grades and their classes are canceled. Alain felt utterly nervous, he could not stop scratching his sweaty palms and shaking his legs. He knew it was his worst academic performance, he was aware of how low his scores were. Alain had a hard time coping with the new learning modalities, he thought it would be easier but it was the complete opposite of his expectations.
“Eat your breakfast, Alain! It is already 9 in the morning!”
“Yes Ma, I’m on the way down!” he answered while walking down the stairs quickly.
While his mother was cooking his favorite breakfast of bacon and eggs with fried rice for them, he prepared the plates and utensils on the dining table while his father was busy skimming the newspaper. Alain, sitting down while waiting for their breakfast to be finished cooking, suddenly thought of his grades which made him shiver in fear that he might disappoint his parents.
“How are your grades, Nak? I bet online classes are easier than physical classes. Are you still on the honors list?” his father asked him while they are having a meal.
“I do not know yet, Pa. Our adviser told us that today is the releasing of grades” answered Alain.
“Remember that you are our only hope, Alain. Your older brother have not graduated college because he failed his major subjects since he followed his passion for photography. If you become a non-achiever like your Kuya Abel, then who will inherit our business? We built the company for your future, Nak. You must become a successful businessman like me and your Mama, not an another disappointment.”
“Yes, Papa. I am doing everything I can.” Alain responded while staring blankly at his plate, trying so hard not to argue with his father.
“I know you did your best since you are a smart kid, no doubt you will maintain your high marks” said by his mother who always believed in him.
Alain wanted to defend his older brother, but he decided to keep it all to himself. His Kuya Abel wanted to become a photographer, but his Mama and Papa were strongly against of it. Abel decided to leave their house, determined to become an independent adult and follow his dream. As a consequence of his older brother’s action, Alain is the new breadwinner of their family.
“Ah Nak, I forgot to tell you something. Your mother will accompany me to conduct a site visit later at Polomolok. Just stay in your room and study well, okay? We will buy you a pasalubong when we come back.”
“Okay Pa, take care and drive safely” Alain told his parents before standing up heading back to his room.
He was able to calm himself down after having a conversation with his parents. Alain opened his laptop again to check for new updates, but there were none. He decided to load up Facebook and he unexpectedly saw a throwback post from three years ago. It was an album filled with pictures of him and his friends riding a motorcycle on their favorite spot in Pag-Asa, a tourist spot located in his old hometown, Alabel.
Alain remembered that there were no classes for tomorrow and his parents were out of town. Unhesitatingly, he prepared an oversized carry-on bag filled with casual and bright colored clothes and fresh and ready to cook meals and beverages, ready to seize his rest day at his childhood home.
For his journey back home, he rode an old jeepney going to Alabel. While he was traveling, he noticed how much his hometown had changed. It looks brighter than how he remembers, and there were so many more stores opened up now than back then. He was excited to meet his friends and other people who lived in their hometown. When he arrived at the terminal in Poblacion, he saw one his old friends Lester, who was driving a sikad.
"Oy Lester!" Alain loudly called Lester.
"Oy Alain I’m glad to see you again. It has been a while!" Lester greeted back.
"I’ve been really busy with school, I barely have any free time" Alain sighed as he replies.
"Hop on. Where do you want to go?" asked Lester.
"Back to the old house"
“All right, let’s go!"
On their way to Alain’s old house, Alain was hit with a massive dose of nostalgia. The beauty of the nature and how green the grass were. The smell of the fresh air and how it felt on your skin. Everything felt nostalgic for Alain. He stared at his old friend and realized how much he has changed. He noticed that Lester was a lot more tan than he used to be, Alain figured that it was because Lester has been working for a while by now. Alain got curious as to how Lester could keep up working and while attending online classes.
"How do you handle doing this much while attending classes?" Alain suddenly asks.
Lester sighs and and sadly says "I don’t. I didn’t enroll this year because my family can’t afford to buy stuff for school. It’s a shame but that’s how it is."
Alain was surprised and sad about what Lester told him.
"I’m sorry it has to be that way for you, but there’s still next year, right?"
"Right. What matters right now is that my family is healthy." Lester replied optimistically.
“How’s your Mama and Papa?” asked Alain, it was ages ago since he saw Aunt Julie and Uncle Leo, Lester’s parents.
“They are doing good, but the farm is having a crisis due to the pandemic. No choice but I had to drive sikad everyday to sustain our daily needs and you know, Tatay’s still sick so I had to buy his medications weekly.”
Alain was saddened to hear Lester’s situation but he wanted to make him feel at ease even for just the briefest moment. While they were talking, Alain glances upon a familiar house below the hill and remembers their other friend.
"Ow right, where is James?" Alain asks while cutting-off Lester.
“Ah James, he’s probably still at work but he’ll be home soon I think.”
“James is working? Why?” asked Alain who seemed shocked by the information.
“Did you already forget what was his dream when we were young? He always said that he wanted to be independent from his Mommy and Daddy, you know. He wanted to become a so called millionaire without his parent’s money. He’s always optimistic about that, right?”
“Oh I didn’t forget that but I didn’t expect that he would actually do that, his parents always babied him since we were young. They wouldn’t even let James go outside their house without their housemaid.” Alain said, chuckling.
“Do you still remember that? We always wanted to become someone like James when we were still kids, right? I wonder what he’s doing tonight after his work.”
"You both should come to the house later, let’s have a bite together!" Alain invited his friends to have dinner tonight at their old house.
“For real? Sure, Alain! I will send a message to James. Make sure to prepare lots of food and alcohol!” said Lester who was clearly excited to catch up with his childhood friends.
Alain having finally arrived back to their old neighborhood, felt rejuvenated. On his way to their old house, he happily greeted all of their old neighbors and they welcomed him back. Seeing the old houses in the neighborhood had him nostalgic again. The little children that he knew were all grown up now. His first moments back were wholesome and happy. As he reminisced, he remembered that he had to prepare the house for dinner later with friends. He quickly went inside to prepare.
It is dinner time and the two finally arrive, Alain excitedly rushes to open the door.
“Welcome welcome” Alain says.
“Hey!” said by both James and Lester.
“Welcome back Buddy! I was surprised when I got the text saying you wanted to have dinner” James laughs while saying.
“Oh right, I brought a gift I’ll bring it out after we eat dinner” said by James.
“All right then, shall we eat?” Alain uttered while preparing their meal.
“Let’s go, I’m starving!” Lester holds his belly as he says it.
As they finish eating dinner and catching up, James rushed outside to get his gift for Alain. James’ gift turned out to be a case of beer, both Lester and Alain looked at each other and laughed. They are now well into the night and about four bottles in, Alain opened up about his current struggle with his parents, and school. James being the most frank in the group, downplays Alain’s struggles.
“Oh c’mon, that stuff isn’t that bad!” James says with little care, this clearly upsets Alain.
“Hey, don’t say that. It’s been pretty hard on me.” Alain replied.
“You’re being dramatic!” said loudly by James.
Alain stands up and chugs down two glasses of beer. As he is about to say something James cuts him off.
“Why are you so serious about it, anyway? Your “struggles” aren’t even that hard. Honestly, you should be thankful.”
“What are you trying to say James?” Alain asked.
“You’re making a big deal out of such small problems, man. I mean look at Lester, he’s having an even rougher time but you don’t see him whining about it. I didn’t realize how privileged you’ve become, Alain.”
After hearing what James had to say, Alain was left without words. His heart felt crushed. His eyes felt heavy. Alain did not expect James to say such things, it broke his heart. Alain, being drunk, could not bear with the pain and broke down. He fell on his knees and cried like he had never cried before in his life.
Alain tries to speak, his words getting jumbled because of his crying.
“I understand that you think my problems are small, but to me it’s not as easy as you say it is. I don’t want to disappoint my parents. I try to push myself to do better, but I can’t. My mind doesn’t want to. My body doesn’t want to. I want to quit school because I hate the way it is right now. It hasn’t been healthy to me.”
Lester and James get up from their seats but don’t know what to say. Alain wipes tears off of his face and continues to talk.
“How could you of all people understand how I feel? Ever since you were young, your future was pretty much laid out for you by your parents. You don’t know how it feels to bear the pressure. You don’t understand how painful it is for me to hear my parents talk bad about my brother because of how he chose to live his life. You don’t understand how much a risk it is for my family if I fail. So how dare does a RICH kid like you who doesn’t understand a thing about anything judge me?” James shocked from Alain’s outburst of anger, becomes speechless.
“I’ve been so sad. Everyday things became such a drag to me. All I think about now are things that I have to do for school. I feel like every hour of every day all I think about are that stuff without rest. Add to that the pressure from my parents. The pressure of not becoming like my brother. Not becoming a failure. If you think I’m making a big deal out of this, that’s because it is a big deal. It’s such a big deal. If you can’t understand that then you’re not my friend.”
Lester got so tensed up he could hardly speak, as he was stuck in the middle of their fight.
It’s always on my mind, day in and day out. I don’t know what to think anymore because of it. I don’t know where to go from here. I don’t know what I want to do anymore.” Alain said as he starts to cry harder.
Alain continued his breakdown. With his head down, he continued to cry and cry. Struggling to grasp his breath. Lester reaches out to Alain. Alain looks up to Lester when he feels Lester’s hand on his shoulder. Lester sits down next to Alain on the floor and puts his arm over Alain’s shoulder.
“We didn’t know you were carrying around that much weight. I’m sorry for what James had to say, I think he meant well but he just didn’t think it through with what he said. Now that you’ve told us what you were going through, we understand. I don’t think that any of our struggles are more significant compared to each other. Everyone has their own demons to face and what you’re going through is hard, but you don’t have to go through it alone. We’re your friends, Alain. We’re here for you no matter what it is you go through.”
After hearing what Lester had to say, Alain thought about it. He realized that the reason he struggled a lot was because he was bearing with it all alone. He thought that Lester was right.
“Hey, I’m sorry for what I said, buddy. I didn’t mean to invalidate your pain. If only I knew how heavy it was for you, I wouldn’t have thought of things like that.” James apologized.
“It’s all right, James. I realized some things because of you two. I realized that I had good friends in you two. Coming home was the big push that I needed to get back on track. Thanks for everything, boys.” Alain replied.
Lester and James cried while laughing because of what Alain said and they both embraced him. After hugging they realized that Alain had fallen asleep. They finished up and brought him to his bed and went home themselves.
Alain found himself lying on his old rickety bed, while suffering from a bad hangover. He woke up to the sound of his phone, there is someone who's been calling him.
"Nak, where are you? It's already 10 o'clock in the evening!" his father's voice made his eyes wide open.
"I'm sorry Pa, I just went to 7/11 to buy some snacks. Don't worry, I’m heading home right now." Alain said while packing his bag and wearing his shoes, moving quickly to go to the terminal and trying to catch up for the last jeepney.
"Add some snacks and drinks, we're going to celebrate something" his father uttered enthusiastically.
"What is that, Pa?" he asked.
"Miss Torres messaged us, Congratulations, Alain! You never fail to make us proud."

About Time
Building
/9:00 AM/
*This time let's visit a new family*
Living-room/Door Entrance/Kitchen/Play-room
*No one can be spotted by our cameras*
*Whose house is it?*
*House seems extra silent today*
Children Bedroom
*The clue is in the bedroom*
Two beds are put aside in which two little bodies lay tangled in their blankets. In the pitch darkness, some movements are seen and heard.
*One of the house owners is awake*
[zoom on the child face] *His name is Park Chang Min*
The little boy stretches and sits up, still dazed. After a while, he gets up and leaves his bedroom.
Living-room
[zoom on his head] *Cute bed head* (amazement)
He walks in the living-room, noticing several removal settled cameras and freezes in his tracks. *Frozen* He stares blankly at them and then smiles, waving. *Hello, little one* (amazement)
Kitchen
He opens the fridge and goes to fetch one of the dining-table's chairs, placing it in front of the fridge before climbing on it. *Is he in charge of breakfast today?*
Parents Bedroom
The parents are not moving an inch *Still asleep* *Zzzz*
Kitchen
Chang Min opens one of the drawers a bit too roughly, causing the pans in it to shake up. *Too loud*
Parents Bedroom
The noise awakes one of the parents straight away. The person gets up and shuffles out of the room to get to the origin of the ruckus.
[zoom on the naked torso] *He is a muscular man* *Is he the new superman?*
Living-room
He walks in the living-room, leading directly to the kitchen.
'Chang Min-ah', he says in a throaty voice.
Kitchen
The little boy turns his head towards his interlocutor, surprised. [slow motion] *Oh, no! He's in trouble* Then smiles sheepishly. *Who is he smiling at?*
[zoom on the stranger's face] *It's famous idol Park Ji Min!* (amazement) [pictures/videos of him performing with the members and alone in concerts and shows] *He debuted in worldwide known K-Pop group BTS in 2013* [videos of him dancing] *He masters sexy dance moves* [videos of him singing] *He has great vocals too* [videos/pictures of him in interviews] * He also has a very cute side*
'What are you doing?' Asks Ji Min, walking to his son.
Chang Min closes the drawer and walks to hug his dad's legs, 'Were you trying to cook breakfast?'
Jimin crouches and takes his son in his arms *Cuddly morning for the son and his dad*(amazement)
'Is your sister still asleep?' Ji Min asks, walking behind the counter.
'Yes.' answers Chang Min, walking away.
'Don't wake her up.'
Children Bedroom
[zoom on Chang Min's sister sleepy face] *Don't wake me up now* (amazement)
Kitchen
Chang Min takes a seat on one of the dinning-table's chairs, watching his dad.
'What do you want to eat, Chang Min-ih?'
'Rice.'
'Rice?' Ji Min opens the rice cooker. [zoom on it] *Empty* Ji Min smiles dumbfounded and closes the cooker. 'There's no rice.' (laughs)
'No rice? Then... cereals?' suggests Min Jun, bending over the table.
'I think mom got rid of it... I'll make something else.' *Doesn't loose his cool* Ji Min opens the fridge and takes out eggs, sausages and fried kimchi. He also takes out pans that he sets on the gas cooker.
'Wait, this isn't right. How do I make it work ?' He pushes some of the cooker's buttons, trying to turn it on.
'Do you want me to call mom?'
'No, I can do it.' laughs Ji Min, eyes glued to the cooker as his fingers work on it.
Chang Min stares at his father *Dad's totally clueless* (laughs)
'How many eggs do I need?' wonders Ji Min by himself once he's managed to operate the cooker.
Children Bedroom
A long whine interrupts house's silence.
Kitchen
Chang Min's head turns toward the corridor leading to his bedroom.
'Your sister's awake.' notices Ji Min breaking eggs in the pan.
Chang Min leaves his spot to join his sister.
Children Bedroom
'Jay-ah!' He calls going up on the bed next to her, 'You're awake?'
'Mom.' She whines turning on her side.
'Dad is awake, come.' Says Chang Min gently yanking on her arm.
The two children leave the room.
Living-room
Chang Min leads the way to his father while the little girl rubs her tired eyes with her tiny fists.
[Zoom on his sister's face] * 36-month-old Park Jay is awake* (amazement)
Kitchen
Ji Min looks up and smiles as soon as he notices her. *Daddy smile*
'Jay-ah, did you sleep well?'
The little girl waddles to her father, a pout on her face. He squats down only for a second to hug her, to prevent the cooking food from burning, earning a whine from Jay who puts her hands in the air.
'I cannot hold you now, I'm cooking. Go wait for me with your brother.' Jay starts to whimper while Chang Min joins them, 'Chang Min, take her away so she won't get burned.'
'Come with me.' The young boy takes her hand and leads her to the living-room, where he's displayed some of their toys to play with until their father is done cooking.
Ji Min looks at them from time to time, happy that Chang Min has managed to calm her down . *Calm and peaceful Dad*
Parents Bedroom
The second adult wakes up and leaves the room after folding the blankets and heads to the bathroom to wash up *Mom is awake*
Ji Min - Hello, I'm idol singer Park Ji Min. This is my first born Chang Min...
Chang Min – Hello and her name is Jay. She's my sister. *cute big brother*
Ji Min – Jay, say hello.
Jay – Hello. *shy little sister*
Ji Min – This is my family an-
Jay – Dad!
Ji Min – Just a second, Jay.
Chang Min – Shh, dad is speaking. Shh!
Ji Min – Chang Min is six-
Chang Min – Where is she going?
Ji Min – Jay, come back. (laughs)
[couple pictures] *The couple met in 2019 and got married three years later. [baby pictures] Chang Min was conceived during their honeymoon and three years later they've welcomed their daughter, Jay.* (amazement) [pictures of hundredth-day-old Jay anniversary] *This cute family live in happiness*
Ji Min – 'When Chang Min was born, I wanted to spend a lot of time with him despite my busy schedule but it wasn't always easy. I'd like to spend even more time with him and his sister by making a lot of memories and this broadcast is the good opportunity. [pictures of the couple's wedding and their everyday life] I still feel guilty when I think about my wife raising Chang Min alone. I'm always thankful and sorry about that. Thankfully, Chang Min grew as a responsible son and loving brother and is always willing to help. I want my wife to take as much rest as she'll need and make up for the lost time.'
Living-room
[zoom on her face] *It's beautiful Y/N*
'Mom!' exclaims Jay while Min Jun gets up to hug her.
Ji Min looks at her, bringing breakfast's last finishing touches. Y/N sits down, kisses and cuddles her children. *The family is full of love this morning* Jay sits between her legs while Y/N yawn, eyes half-closed. *Mom came home late last night because of work*
'I feel so sore,' She rubs her neck. 'Look at that,' She says looking at her husband, a smile on her face, 'Chef Ji Min.'
'Stop it' He chuckles.
'Mom, look!' shouts Jay, seeking her mom's attention.
'Breakfast's ready!' calls Ji Min.
The family gets up to sit around the dining-table. [zoom on the table] (amazement) *Chef Ji Min's meals look delicious* All the family eats happily, gobbling down all the food. *Nothing's left*
Ji Min gets up to bring some fruits.
'Jay, do you like mango or me better?' asks Chang Min.
'You.' She points her index finger towards him.
'Do you like Mom better or Chang Min better?' questions Y/N.
'Mom' answers Jay in a heartbeat, making Chang Min to stare at blankly and Ji Min to chuckle at him.
'Do you like Mom better or Dad better?' continues Y/N.
'Dad!'
Y/N fakess crying
'Mom.' She corrects
'What about Chang Min?' Inquires her mother.
'Should I leave? I'm leaving.' says the little boy
'No!' Chang Min goes to hug his sister.
*Jay can't live without Chang Min*
'What have you planned on doing today?' asks Y/N, wiping Jay's mouth.
'We're going to the swimming pool.' answers Ji Min earning squeals and giggles of joy from his son.
'We're going to swim?' He asks, throwing his fists in the air.
'Yes, you, me and Jay. We'll have fun.'
'What about mom?' Suddenly asks Chang Min.
'Mom? She's going to rest with her friends, I guess.'
Chang Min, sat between his parents, stretches his hand to his mother for her to hold, a sad look on his face. *Mom needs a vacation*
Living-room
/10:36 AM/
'Lie down.' Says Ji Min to Y/N, coming back from their bedroom with one bottle of body lotion followed closely by Jay who's sucking her thumb. Chang Min is sat next to his mother, watching cartoons. *Ji Min will give Y/N a massage* Ji Min raises her pants up to her thighs and begins massaging Y/N's legs and feet. Jay stands still next to him, watching his actions.
'You want to help me? Jay-ah.' asks Ji Min smiling at her, 'Massage here.' He raises Y/N's shirt, exposing her lower back. Jay squats down and draws her hand close to her mom.
'Ow! Don't pinch me', complains Y/N, raising and turning her head to the side, making Jay laugh. (laughs)
'I want to help.' cries Chang Min sitting next to his father.
'Let's fold Mom.' suggest Ji Min, raising his wife's legs. Chang Min follows his lead. Ji Min steps aside to let his son work, 'That's it, stretch mom. Press here, Chang Min. Chang Min. Here, the end of toes. Good.' Chang Min leans down and Y/N lets out another shout.
*Hard! Puts all his weight on it*
'Wait, that's too hard.'
'Endure it, honey.' supports Ji Min, tilting his head to the side to look at Y/N.
'Ow, who's that?' she suddenly exclaims when Jay starts pressing with her feet on her back.
*Poor mom is tortured by her little ones*
'Done!' announces the little girl, running away.
'Wait, no! Guys do a bit more!' Y/N demands looking at her children who've fled. Ji Min resumes his position and massaging.
'I'm going to work hard until Mom tells me that's enough.' He says, kneading her back muscles.
'That's enough.' shouts Jay, coming back next to her parents.
'Mom has to say it.' says Ji Min to her.
'This feels nice.' comments Y/N.
'Ok, sit up now.' Says Ji Min sitting back on his heels, 'Take deep breaths.' He helps stretching her arms and shoulders.
Entrance Door
/11:07 AM/
*The family is ready to leave*
Ji Min helps Jay to put on her coat while Y/N walks to them crouching down.
'I'm going to miss you a lot, mom.' says Chang Min, taking his mother in his arms. Y/N hugs him back, pulling him on her knees.
'I'm going to miss you lots too, Chang Min-ih.' *Loving*
'Let's leave now!' He shouts all of sudden, leaving his mother shocked. *shock*
Ji Min straightens and Jay walks away, following her brother out of the apartment. Y/N stands up still shocked walking to Ji Min, '“I'm going to miss you mom. Let's leave!”' she mocks earning a chuckle from Ji Min.
'Be careful on your way,' She says, her voice muffled in Ji Min's sweater as he hugs her, 'Bye.'
Ji Min walks out and Y/N peers her head outside, 'Bye, kids!'
Y/N – Yes, it's their first time alone with their father. Thinking of going to the water park with Dad, he said he was so excited. I asked if he didn't need me and if he could have fun with Dad. He told me not to worry and Jay happily bid me farewell, leaving me without a worry. They've grown so much.
Swimming Pool
/02:16 PM/
*The family's arrived at the water park where they can play in water*
Changing-rooms
[slow-motion] *Who's making an entrance like a model?* Ji Min and the kids appear walking out of the changing rooms. Jay is wearing a pink dolphin swimsuit and Chang Min's is a tiger. Ji Min is carrying their buoys *Will they enjoy swimming* They walk passed the cameras * Jay & Chang Min's fashion show*
Near the pools
'Be careful, Jay. You can slip.' warns her brother, taking her hand. *He's being extra careful around water* (amazement)
'Guys! Easy,' Ji Min catches up with them, taking Jay's other hand before they reach the first pool. Chang Min dips the tip of his feet in the water, smiling excited. *Checking the temperature first*
'We need to warm up before we enter the water.' Ji Min jumps first inside the water and faces his children who watch him by the side of the pool. [Ji Min's feet in the water] *Water is shallow there* *A safe space for small kids to enjoy water* He starts by twisting his knees then his wrists. The kids follow him but Jay has some trouble because of her armlets. [zoom on her] *Her arms are too short*
Ji Min takes Chang Min in his arms and dives him in the water, making sure he can reach the bottom. Then, he turns towards Jay who seems reluctant.
'Come here, Jay.' Beckons Ji Min, opening his arms, 'I'll hold you, I won't drop you.'
The little girl walks carefully to her father, looking at the water. Ji Min catches her and she tightens her grip on his shirt. [zoom on her fist] He gradually dives in, looking at her reaction.
'I am scared!' she whimpers, wiggling her feet. [feet moving relentlessly] *feet don't touch the floor*
Ji Min tries to loose her grip on him, Min Jun appears with an inflatable noodle that Ji Min takes, 'Here. Grab this.'
'No.' panics Jay as she feels Ji Min backing from her.
'You won't dive, just take it. Look at Chang Min.' The little boy is happily swimming around them, smiling to his sister who watches him unsure.
'Wow, Chang Min! You're doing well.' praises Ji Min. *He’s as happy as a lark* (amazement)
Chang Min paddles hurriedly, 'Don't go too far.' says Ji Min to him, walking in the pool, 'Oh. The water gets deep here.'
He tries several times to dive Jay inside the water but his daughter doesn't want to let go of him. 'Let's try something.' He turns Jay around in his arms, causing the little girl to whimper. *He wants her to be comfortable in the water*
'No. Dad, I'm scared.' quavered Jay.
'It's okay, I'll just put you on me.' Ji Min presses Jay's back against him as he lays on his back in the water but she can't seem to relax and raises her head, afraid she'll drown. Ji Min swims next to Chang Min who has found an older male friend in a buoy. Ji Min smiles as he watches him interacts with the boy.
[zoom on the boy's face] 'Chang Min-ah! You're teaching him? Are you a swimming teacher?' (laughs)
After a while Ji Min goes near the edge and takes Jay out of the water, making her standing still. As soon as Ji Min puts her on the wet tiles, she stretches her arms to him, not willing to leave his arms. But Ji Min doesn't notice and dives to wet his hair, resulting in his daughter crying when she sees him disappearing under the water. He resurfaces, smiling to her and reassures her.
'Okay, Jay. Do you want to jump? Jump in my arms.' He says, taking a few steps away from the edge and from her.
'No,no. Come back.' She whines leaning forward to reach for him.
'Trust me and jump, you can do it.' He tries a second time but she's not having any of it. Min Jun swims next to them, 'Let's try with Chang Min.' He takes his son out of the water, 'Chang Min, jump in the water to show her.'
'Jay, look at me!' The boy backs away a little and runs to jump with a big -splash- in the water. *Her brother sets the example* His sister watches him with scared eyes and rubs her face when some of the water splatter on it. Chang Min resurfaces smiling at her, 'Have you seen me? Jay-ah!'
'See? He's fine. It's fun, try it.' says Ji Min turning to her. Her eyes goes back and forth between the water and her Dad. She asks him to come and take her. Ji Min comes closer but let a bit of space between him and her.
'Come on,' Much more closer than before, Jay's feet are bending over the edge, 'That's it, now jump!' Jay bends her legs and jumps, catching Ji Min's neck. She's smiling, relieved to be in his arms again, 'You see. Nothing goes wrong if your trust me.' He puts her back on the edge, much to her dismay, 'Let's try again.'
'No.'
'You already did it. One last time.' This time, Jay jumps immediately making Ji Min and Chang Min, who's stayed close, explode with joy. 'Again!' (laughs)
'Dad.' she whines, clinging on his shirt.
'I promise you, it's the last time.' He says reaching for the edge with his fingers, pulling on his arm. She jumps a third time, squealing when she lands in his arms. [zoom on her face] *No longer afraid* 'Shall we try diving?' he asks, wiping her face.
'I don't want to.' (laughs)
'Try swimming on your own.' He makes her lie on her front. 'Look at Chang Min doing it.' *She's adjusted to the water*
'Jay, kick your legs like me.' He says while showing her how. She mimics him as Ji Min moves her a little onwards.
The siblings have fun with their father. *Now, they're able to play together*
'Should we go on the slide?' suggests Ji Min, looking at the other children going down a yellow and white slide.
'Yes!' shouts Chang Min, leading the way. Ji Min takes Jay in his arms and follows his son. They arrive and stop behind three children already waiting for their turn. Chang Min slides first, turning to smile at Ji Min as soon as he's reached the bottom.
'Okay, Jay it's your turn.' He gives his daughter to the woman in charge of the slide. The woman sits her and positions her correctly, 'Do you want me to wait for you at the end?' She nods and Ji Min slides down while Chang Min has already left to slide a second time. 'Jay-yah, I'm here! Slide!' encourages Ji Min, clapping his hands together.
The woman pushes the girl gently. Jay moves forward, water splashing on her as she slides down and her arms raised in the air to balance herself. Ji Min instantly grabs her and congratulates her, happy to see his daughter having fun. She points at Chang Min as he slides down and then points towards the top to go down again. *She forgets her fear thanks to her dad* (cooing)

Day 2 of Lockdown - 25/03/2020
Intro
Hey to anyone who’s there! This page is where I’ll be keeping a diary of each aspect of my lock down. I’ve created it more for myself, as I’m extremely interested in the effects of pandemics and disease (Not just biologically, mentally, or politically, but in all aspects including those and beyond, really) and I hope to be able to use this as a study into humans reactions to isolation and the interruption to the everyday routines and systems we place ourselves in.
To me, this is crazy, fascinating, and terrible.
-----------------
Update
Today I’m a bit bored and after yesterday already struggled a little this morning to find things to do. However, I managed. I haven’t seen anyone outside however from what a member of my household who had to go out to pick up medicine has told me, there are still plenty of people in stores. This worries me that not even these measures are making people take Covid-19 seriously.
I found this song today from a trailer for Narcos.  Slept last night - 2300 Woke up - 6:30 AM Today’s Stats: UK total cases -  8,227 (+ 1427 from  yesterday) UK total deaths - 433 (+87 from yesterday) Global Mortality Rate - 4.5%
-------------------
Food
Today I will be making bruschetta for dinner.
Yesterday, I made the aforementioned bean chilli. After feeding everyone, there was what I can only estimate to be around 4kg of chilli left (estimated by comparing weight of 2kg bag of red lentils). It was a little sweeter than i prefer this time, i don’t think i added enough chilli powder, however it was still widely enjoyed. I loosely followed this recipe with a few personal  and circumstance adjustments.
Options still available for dinner:
Fried Rice
Lentil Soup
Bruschetta
Lentil Daal
Makeshift-Roast-Dinner
Baked Potatoes
Chip stuffs
Bean Chilli (already cooked)
------------------
Activity and Health
I’m still playing animal crossing and plan to do some other things today such as plant some rocket for my roommates tortoises to eat.
My activity options include:
Indoor gardening
Painting
Digital Art
Animation
Animal Crossing + other games
Cooking
Calling friends
Keeping this diary
I still don’t have any plans for exercise routines but might pick up something later on. Mental Health Splurge:
Health wise I feel okay, but clearly lazier and more reclusive. I’m also stressed as a teacher is making posts about online tests despite being previously told that we were done with the course. They mentioned this in a post at the beginning of the week however didn’t mention that it would be timed. As such I thought it would be posted and we would be allowed to complete it in our own time. However, today I was told its a timed test. To me this is was too short term notice and unfair not to clarify in this uncharted territory.  Also, due to the noise in my house I wouldn’t be able to complete the test well had i been studying for a few days. I know this due to my past experiences of failed tests or greatly lowered marks when there was as much as a person repeatedly clicking a pen. This setting wouldn’t accurately show my ability at all. As such I’ve decided to ignore it to be honest, as it’s far too stressful for me to be worrying about (I’m realising now that my security around my results is a lot lower than I first thought).  I hope that this does not annoy my teacher or make her negatively biased to put me forward for a lower grade than I deserve. As well as this, I can already feel this lifestyle reverting backwards to how it was before I moved here. This was my plan, and so I’m fine with an internet and indoors based lifestyle - but it reminds me of abuse. I also can feel very easily how my mentality could slip back into worthlessness and I’m listening to similar music I would at the time of living with my abuser. This already feels unhealthy but I’m trying to convince myself that this is completely different and I really have changed and grown as a person since leaving. I already feel a little bit broken inside, and I can remember the worst parts of my life.  It doesn’t help that my abuser still texts me over a year later and I can’t bring myself to remove her in case she breaks things of mine that she still has and  refuses to give back / says she will give back but I’d have to meet her face to face in her house (my previous house) to get it. (Even then I don’t truly know if she would) To help prevent and stop this I’m going to make myself more busy than I have today and try to be around the rest of the people in my house more. I’m also considering using my daily exercise as a walk around the area to get some fresh air. Either that, or I’ll sit out the window like I used to when I first came here when it get’s dark. Lo-fi, stars, and fresh air.  While writing, I’ve also realised that these posts will be good evidence for my therapist when those sessions are eventually able to restart, as no appointments are taking place unless absolutely urgent and serious.  tl;dr Mental health has worsened, but I’m gonna try and do some things to combat it. I think it’s worsened due to memories of previous abuse brought up by social isolation and grade stress.

Work
Over the years, I’ve discovered that I really require a sense of productivity and work routine in order to feel successful and avoid disappointment in myself. As such today I wrote a to-do list on my hand as usual. Today This said:
“To do
-Start Grant application -Work On MAP Part -Cook Bruschetta -Plant Rocket -Blog post”
Yesterday I wasn’t able to start my grant application, and to be honest I’m a little hesitant about applying considering the situation as I’m not sure how I’ll complete the project. My friend suggested if I’m unable to create what I want, I could submit a mock up instead.  I’ve been watching a few AMVs and animation memes which are reminding me how awesome it is to be able to create something so beautiful from scratch; I might add some personal projects to my to do list later now that I have all this free time.
------------------
TL;DR:
I’m a Scottish girl who does art, cooks, is vegan, and plays games who has recently been placed in lock-down along with the rest of the UK. I’ll be making a daily diary of it all and maybe eved-n posting some art if I make any. Read the rest to find out today’s Daily update incl. Food, Activity & Health, and Work.
-----------------
If you read this far, thank you so much and I hope my updates are useful and informative and that we can all stick together and see this pandemic as not only a thing to be afraid of, but also a think to be fascinated and educated about.
ByeBye~

Special Sauce: Tommy Tomlinson on Untangling Food, Love, and Loving Food
[Photograph: Jeff Cravotta. Burger photograph: Emily and Matt Clifton.]
It's pretty rare for a Special Sauce interview to speak so directly to me that it feels like I've been hit in the gut. But that's exactly what happened when I talked with Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Tommy Tomlinson, whose book The Elephant in the Room: One Fat Man's Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America is a moving memoir about struggling with eating and weight issues.
As someone who has grappled with a weight problem my whole life, I identified with every word Tomlinson wrote and every bite he took, and I often felt during our conversation that he was speaking about my own experiences with food.
For example, here is Tomlinson on how food makes him feel: "I've never done hard drugs, but the feeling that I've heard people describe when they shoot heroin, for example that incredible rush and that warm feeling that goes over their body, is very similar to what I believe I feel when I have like a double cheeseburger from Wendy's. It's just this burst of pleasure and good feeling."
Tomlinson is similarly eloquent about how he started to make the connection between obesity and food: "I didn't really connect being overweight with eating because I was eating what everybody else in my family was eating. I just wasn't working the way they were working to burn off calories. And as I got older, I started to realize even more deeply that I had these two lives. I had this one life where I was successful and doing well, had good friends, had people who loved and cared about me. And had this second life where I had this addiction that I could not control. And...up until basically this book and me trying to figure it out, I never could reconcile those two things. And so, sure, I knew from early on that I had some fundamental issue, I just never could figure out what it was."
And here he is on the fraught relationship between food and love: "And then there's stuff that's very common in food which is it's about love and affection. Your family has made this gift for you often still to this day it's your mom or your grandmother or somebody like that has made this thing. And they've sacrificed and they've sweated over it. And they've worked on this recipe for years. And it's a family tradition. And they always have it. And so for you just to not indulge in it carries a whole lot of symbolic weight. It's like rejecting the people who love you."

Ed Levine: Welcome to Special Sauce, Serious Eats' podcast about food and life. Every week on Special Sauce we talk to some of the leading lights of American culture, food folks, and non-food folks alike.
Tommy Tomlinson: I'm never done hard drugs, but the feeling that I've heard people describe when they shoot heroin, for example that incredible rush and that warm feeling that goes over their body, is very similar to what I believe I feel when I have like a double cheeseburger from Wendy's. It's just this burst of pleasure and good feeling.
EL: Today I'm thrilled to be talking with the terrific writer, Pulitzer Prize finalist, podcaster... What else can I say about you, Tommy? Freelance writer extraordinaire.
TT: Man about town.
EL: Tommy Tomlinson. Tommy is the host of the podcast SouthBound in partnership with WFAI. But we're here because he's the author of the remarkably brave and candid, The Elephant in the Room: One Man's Fat Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America. And I have to say, Tommy, I couldn't improve upon the press release copy, so pardon me for plagiarizing. "This moving memoir is at once a meditation on weight and identity and a candid and sometimes brutal look at the everyday experience of being constantly aware of your size, obsessing over where you're going to sit at basketball games and restaurants or dreading the lurch of a packed subway and the fear and guilt that result." Wow. Man, did you write that?
TT: I did not. But whoever did deserves a raise.
EL: Exactly. So welcome to Special Sauce, Tommy Tomlinson. It's so good to have you here.
TT: Thank you so much, Ed. I appreciate you having me on.
EL: I literally read your book twice. I'm a little embarrassed to say that. Some people will read like A Tale of Two Cities twice or Middlemarch. I read The Elephant in the Room twice.
TT: That's good company. I'll stay in that company all day.
EL: But weight is something I too have struggled with my whole life. So The Elephant in the Room speaks to me on so many levels. I once chronicled on Serious Eats my lifelong struggle with weight in a series of posts that were weekly for more than two years called Ed Levine's Serious Diet. And I would literally get on the scale every week and tell people how I was doing.
TT: That's brave.
EL: So let's talk about life at the Tomlinson family table which you obviously go into in the book. So it's a particularly relevant question for you.
TT: Well, back in my growing up years, I grew up in the Deep South on the coast of Georgia. And my family was a very Deep Southern country family. My mom and dad picked cotton when they were young. They were sharecroppers. And so they lived in a world where you could eat whatever you wanted because they would burn it off at work during the day.
TT: And so by the time I came around I was leading a softer life but we still had these big Southern meals, especially things like family reunions where there would be five or six meats. There would always be a huge platter of fried chicken in the middle of the table. And they would always, called the white food group, which is like mashed potatoes, potato salad, deviled eggs, rice, that sort of thing. Biscuits and cornbread. And then all these vegetables which were fresh out of the garden but also cooked with ham or bacon or fatback for seasoning. And then the deserts which were pecan pie, peach cobbler, pound cake, and all these incredible desserts that we had. Those were meals that up through my generation of my family. They could eat that and they'd just go off and work it off the next day.
TT: Well, I had a different life and that's part of the reason I got so big.
EL: Yeah, that's interesting. And it was your mom. Your mom was a good old fashioned country cook, right?
TT: Oh, absolutely. I mean everything. We had usually a coffee can on the back of the stove where she kept the bacon grease. So when she made bacon in the morning, she would save that leftover grease and put it in that little pot, that little can, and then would use that for later meals. So something that was very common is we fished a lot. And so we would catch catfish let's say. And she would use that bacon grease to fry the catfish in. And so the catfish would have that not only its own flavor but that bacon flavor too which was just incredibly intoxicating.
EL: I want that right now.
TT: I know. I know.
EL: Can I say that?
TT: Me too.
EL: So were you hyper-aware? Were you always aware? Like for me when I was a kid, I couldn't escape it because I shopped at the husky section at Meijer's department store.
TT: I was too big for the husky section of the department store. When I was a little kid, we tried to shop at Sears and JCPenney's and places like that. But eventually by my teenage years I'd even grown out of those stores. And so in the town where I grew up, Brunswick, Georgia, there was one big and tall store. It was called PS Menswear. And the clothes there are always out of style, often by 10 or 20 years. Nothing ever fit quite right. There was never any of the cool things that the other kids were wearing were never in that store.
EL: Right. There was no Ralph Lauren for big guys.
TT: Right. When I was a kid, it was Izod shirts. When I was a teenager, that was the cool thing. I'd never once saw an Izod shirt in that store. And so I would go in there with all these other overweight men usually and often teenagers with their moms. And we were all just incredibly ashamed and embarrassed to be there. And we would grab whatever came even close to fitting and go in the little dressing room to try it. And the worst days are when even those things wouldn't fit. And I remember a couple of those days when even the stuff in the big and tall store wouldn't fit. And I remember just going away incredibly frustrated. Like, "How am I going to dress myself for the rest of my life?"
TT: My mom managed to patch up a lot of the old things I had, let out some stuff, and sort of keep me in clothes for a while. But that was always a problem for me.
EL: And you talk in the book about being teased. And I remember when I was in junior high school they used to say, "Hey, it's fast Eddy without the S." Did you have that stuff too?
TT: That's among the more clever ones, actually. I mean, yeah, you always hear like, "Fatty, fatty, two-by-four can't get through the bathroom door." And all that stuff. But what I remember more than verbal stuff are just kind of insults was just the way people looked at you differently or laughed. I have a scene in the book where I talk about the relay races that we used to run when I was in elementary school. So they get like the whole grade into two big lines where it'd be a race grade against grade. And there'd be maybe 30 people in each line. And people would shift around because they wanted to be matched up against somebody who was sort of their equal. And I always got matched up against this one girl named Pamela who was as big as I was. And we were about the same speed. Some days I was faster than her. And that made me really happy. Some days she was faster than me and I was just devastated. What I always remember about those races is we would run from the line to this big pine tree in our school yard, touch the tree and turn around and run back. Every time Pamela and I went to that tree and touched it and turned back, I could see the other kids laughing at us. And I'm never going to forget that.
EL: Yeah, it's weird. We all have those childhood moments. And yet you were... From reading the book like me you were eating unconsciously. You had no idea why you were eating as compulsively as you were, right?
TT: Yeah, a lot of the books I've read on this subject start with some incredible trauma. Like somebody was abused as a child or something like that. That wasn't true in my case. I had an incredibly happy childhood. I had two parents who loved me. Very stable. We didn't have much money. But it was a very stable childhood. I had friends, good friends. I did well academically and all those sorts of things. This was just the one thing that I always had in me that sort of constant craving for more and more and more. And that has led all the way through my life basically.
EL: I want to talk about what food meant to you then and what food means to you now. But there's this amazing section in the book where you talk about that by any reasonable standard I won life's lottery. Then you say, "Except in those mornings and I take a long naked look in the mirror. My body is a car wreck. Skin tags. Long mole-like growths caused by chaffing dangle under my arms and down on my crotch. I have breasts where my chest ought to be." And then you say, "Some days when I see that disaster staring back, I get so mad that I pound my gut with my fists as if I could beat the fat out of me." Then you end that section with, "What the hell is wrong with me?" So when you just couldn't figure out what to do about it.
TT: As you said, it didn't really dawn on me at first. I didn't really connect being overweight with eating because I was eating what everybody else in my family was eating. I just wasn't working the way they were working to burn off calories. And as I got older, I started to realize even more deeply that I had these two lives. I had this one life where I was successful and doing well, had good friends, had people who loved and cared about me. And had this second life where I had this addiction that I could not control. And I never... up until basically this book and me trying to figure it out, I never could reconcile those two things. And so sure I knew from early on that I had some fundamental issue I just never could figure out what it was.
EL: So your dad had various jobs according to the book. And your mom worked as well, right?
TT: Yeah, they both worked. So when I came around they'd met at a seafood packing plant down in Georgia. So basically factory jobs. But my dad later on was a carpenter. He could fix anything. And my mom later on was a waitress for a long time. They always worked these blue-collar jobs. When they were young, they were sharecroppers. They picked cotton in other people's fields down in south Georgia. And so they always had the type of jobs where they could burn off big meals all the time. And this is a big shift not just in my family but in many American families where the culture goes from blue-collar work to white-collar work. But the food doesn't change. So we were eating those same big meals that they ate all their lives because they had needed that fuel to cover them for being in the cotton field for 14 hours a day. Well, they worked really, really hard in their lives so I wouldn't have to. And so I grew up sort of this bookish kid who was destined for a desk job. But I was eating those same meals. And so that's why I got big, and they didn't because we were eating the same meals but with different lifestyles.
EL: And when you were growing up, I mean in the book you go back and forth between the micro issues you're confronting and the macro issues that the country is facing with the obesity epidemic. And you say that fat America runs on the fuel of easy and cheap junk food motivated by constant adds for burgers and beers soothed and sated by oversized portions. And you also say, "As every fat person knows, there's no such thing as a cheap buffet. You always pay later one way or another. Fat America comes with a devastating bill. According to government estimates, Americans pay $147 billion a year in medical costs related to obesity." But back when you were growing up, and I think you're a little younger than me, but back... People didn't talk about the obesity epidemic, right? There wasn't a lot of macro chatter about it.
TT: Well, I think that's because there probably wasn't that much of an obesity epidemic because so many people still worked really blue-collar industrial-type jobs. And so it's really hard to get fat when you're sweating in a mill for 8 or 10 hours a day. And so I remember there being certainly overweight people walking around that I saw and encountered in my life. I went back for this book and went back and looked at some of my old school pictures like the class photos and stuff. And I was always the biggest kid in the class but there were other kids who were overweight too, but not nearly to the extent that people are now. If you just sit on a bench in the park and you watch 20 people walk by, 8 or 10 of them are going to be pretty seriously overweight. And that is I think part of this shift in the culture of work. And the vast amount of money that's to be made in selling high calorie, high fat food to people. As I said in the book, the movie theater closest to our house, a small coke is now 32 ounces. That's a quart of coke. In no world should a small anything be 32 ounces.
EL: That's true.
TT: But portion sizes have grown and grown and grown over the years as these food providers, restaurants, and theaters and places like that are competing for the audience. The audience reacts to having bigger and bigger portions. Everything's bigger.
EL: Yeah, you live in the South where Hardee's has been marketing two-pound hamburgers or whatever for so long now. It's like you can't have a big enough Hardee's burger in their universe.
TT: Yeah, and each one has like, "Here we've got the burger and we're putting on half a pound of barbecue," or, "We're slapping a couple of fried eggs on there," or whatever it is to make it even worse. And so yeah, I mean it's astonishing now if you go look at the calorie counts for some of those Hardy's burgers or some of those other places, the one that always, the place that always freaks me out is the Cheesecake Factory. If you ate a regular meal at the Cheesecake Factory, you'd have to run halfway across the country to burn off that meal.
EL: It's true.
TT: It's just an astonishing amount of butter and sugar and grease that goes into making something like that. We're all vulnerable to that kind of stuff.
EL: Yeah. You say in the book what food is about to you and you say that food is connection. Food is friendship. Food is a certain kind of love. But you also then later in the book talk about pleasure and even in the beginning of the book you say, "Bless me father for I have sinned. I lust after greasy double cheeseburgers and fried chicken legs and Ruffles straight out of the bag. I covet hot Krispy Kreme donuts that melt on my tongue. I worship bowls full of peanut M&Ms, first savoring them one-by-one then stuffing my mouth with handfuls, then wetting my fingers to pick up those last bits of chocolate dust and candy shell." For all of us that deal with weight problems food represents so many things to us.
TT: Well, first of all as you just described, it's a great pleasure. I've never done hard drugs. But the feeling that I've heard people describe when they shoot heroin for example that incredible rush and that warm feeling that goes over their body is very similar to what I believe I feel when I have a double cheeseburger from Wendy's. It's just a powerful... It's just this burst of pleasure and good feeling. But yes, beyond that in my family growing up we didn't have much money and so food represented in some ways the only real wealth we had. Our table at dinner time was as good or better than anybody in town's. We knew that we were wealthy at the table. And then there's stuff that's very common in food which is it's about love and affection. It's like rejecting the people who love you.
EL: It's true. In my family my grandmother, everyone has these stories in their family. And my grandmother was the good cook, an old Eastern European Jewish cook. And there's the story of when my oldest brother brought home three friends from college and there were seven of us at the table. And we consumed a hundred blintzes. But everyone has that. Your book is full of those moments.
TT: I had a very similar experience in college. I brought several of my roommates home. We were going to see a football game the next day. And so they slept over at our house. And my mom made what for us was a pretty typical meal. And I could see one of the guys in particular who didn't grow up in sort of a traditional Southern household with every bowl and platter and basket my mom brought to the table, his eyes got bigger and bigger and bigger. He was thinking like, "How many people are you feeding here? Are you feeding 30 people? There's just 5 of us here."
EL: That's awesome.
TT: And so the level of, first of all, the goodness of it. And then the abundance of it, is something that's really hard to push yourself away from.
EL: And you went to college at the University of Georgia.
TT: I did.
EL: And as you lay out in the book, college also lends itself to terrible eating habits.
TT: Well, yeah. I mean it was the first time I was out on my own. So I was unsupervised. I certainly ate a lot when I was home but my mom and dad were watching over me so I couldn't totally indulge. But you get to college and at most places, most colleges and universities they have all- you-can-eat dining halls which I had. And then we had the little sub shop across the street which I often indulged in. I had a friend who worked for Domino's at the time and he would often come back at 1:00 in the morning with pizzas that they hadn't sold for one reason or another. We would split up those pizzas. And then that was also a time when I started to drink fairly heavily as many college students do. And so I'm eating unlimited buffets. I'm eating sub shop's right across the street. Free pizza at night and lots of beer. That's a recipe for disaster.
EL: Yeah, for sure.
TT: Trying to keep in any kind of shape. I probably was more physically active those first couple years of college than I ever was. I played basketball hours a day almost every day. Took long walks from one class to another across a very hilly campus. But I still gained like 50 pounds because I was just inhaling so much food and so much alcohol.
EL: I assume without, like me, like without even thinking about it. And it wasn't just when you're anxious or nervous about something. It was just your default mode.
TT: Well, it's both. It's a catch-22. It's a thing that you're supposed to indulge in when you're happy. When everybody's happy and celebrating, what do you do? You have food or you have beer or whatever. But it's also the thing that's soothes you when you're feeling bad. The whole going to the fridge at night, eating the pint of ice cream. It's linked with both the euphoria and the downside too.
EL: So how much did you weigh in college?
TT: I was probably, I didn't step on a scale very often at college. But when I went to college I was probably in the 250-260 range. By the time I got out of college, I probably gained another 75 or 80 pounds.
EL: Wow. So that's really like, yes, 250 is heavy, but if you came out of 330 that's when you go into morbidly obese mode, right?
TT: Exactly. Which is I didn't even really know that phrase until I was in my late 20's and I ended up having throat cancer which is why I have this weird voice. And as I was in the doctor's office one day, he turned to talk to his nurse and I could see the note he was writing. And the two words ‘morbidly obese’ jumped off the page at me. And he was just... It was just a clinical description of what I was. And that meant I was obese to the point where my weight was likely to kill me. And so even though I knew that at that moment it took me a long time to get better. But yeah, certainly for the time I was in my mid-20's and on I was morbidly obese.
EL: And when you started the book, it's New Year's Eve 2014, right? So there were many years and by the time you started the book, you weighed 460.
TT: Yeah, and I was 50-years-old at that moment.
EL: You were 50-years-old and you weighed 460?
TT: Yep.
EL: And that must have been just beyond terrifying.
TT: It was. And the thing that had happened just prior to that was my sister had died. My sister Brenda who was a light in our family. She was a good bit older than me. She was in her mid-60's. But she had struggled with her weight most of her life as well. And that year and the holidays she'd had some swelling in her legs that was weight related, developed an infection, and it was one of those MRSA-type infections that by the time really anybody knew what was going on she was really, really sick. And my wife and I were in Tennessee with my wife's family. And my brother called and said, "Brenda's really sick. You need to get down here." So we made our way down and we hadn't even gotten halfway there. And my brother sent a text that said, "She's gone."
EL: Wow.
TT: And it blew a hole in our family. And at her funeral service as I was sitting there watching everyone grieve for somebody who was gone too soon I could see my future. As I wrote in the book, I was 50-years-old at the time and guys like us don't make it to 60. I realize that if I kept going down that path I wasn't going to make it much further. I had this old black suit. It was the only suit I owned at the time, this pinstripe suit. And I remember looking down and looking at that suit and thinking, "That's the suit I'm going to be buried in."
EL: Wow.
TT: And so that was the big impetus for me to change.
EL: My late brother, who was the first investor in Serious Eats and who adopted me after my parents died, had radical and early bariatric surgery where they removed part of his small intestine. And even though it had lots of anticipated and unanticipated side effects, he does say that it gave him a bonus. He probably had it when he was 50 or 55 and he made it to 75. And I think for him it was the same thought process for you. It's like, "I'm not going to make it if I don't do something and he didn't think that he had the self-discipline to do it on his own." So he went for the major, major surgery when they didn't know very much about this stuff, right? But you decided you weren't going to do that even though bariatric surgery had come a long way by the time you started 2014.
TT: Two things there. One is I know lots of people who've had bariatric surgery. And even though as you say they've improved it vastly over the years there's still a wide range of outcomes. There are people who have it and it totally transforms them for the better. They would do it a hundred times out of a hundred. I know some other people who've had real problems with the side effects, the lifestyle changes they've had to make, all those sorts of things. And they might not do it again if given the chance. And then all kinds of outcomes in the middle. So for me if the way I'm doing things now if I'm not able to sustainably lose weight for the next 5 to 10 years or so, then that's certainly on the table for me. But I wanted to try losing weight in a way I never tried before. And I wanted to give it a sustained effort one more time to see if I could do it on my own.
EL: And you describe the diet you put yourself on very succinctly, right?
TT: Well, yeah. It's a three-step diet. It's what a lot of people disdainfully describe as calories in and calories out. So I have a Fitbit that measures my steps and exercise every day that tells me how many calories I've burned. It also has an app where I can type in everything I eat during the day and it tells me how many calories I've brought in. If I burn more than I bring in every day, I consider that a win. And with my doctor's supervision I have set out on this plan to lose weight very slowly and sustainably.
TT: The reason for that is the vast majority of crash diets, not only the ones that I've tried, but the ones I've read studies about, the vast majority of commercial diets don't work for people like me. As the way I describe it, if you have 10 pounds to lose, you could probably go pull just about any book off the diet book shelf at your local bookstore and you can make something work for you. If you have 200 pounds to lose or more, you have to find something that's not just going to work for 30 days. It's got to work for 300 days or 3,000 days. And that requires a different approach.
EL: And to make it to 3,000 days that's also the only way to do it. You talk about in the book that the body has very strong defenses against crash diets.
TT: Absolutely. What happens inside your body when you lose a lot of weight, your body is still... part of your body is still stuck in Neanderthal days. And when you start to lose weight, it thinks you're starving. And so your metabolism slows down. And it tries to basically push you back to the weight that you once were because that was what they thought was normal. What at the cellular level your body thinks is normal. There was a study a few years ago of a group of contestants who were on The Biggest Loser, the TV show. And they found many of those people lost a lot of weight on the show and then gained it back. And what they found was that even for the ones who gained it back, their bodies were still slowing down their metabolism because it still wanted to push them even further to make them basically harder and harder for them to lose weight because your body sees losing weight as a flaw. Because you're suppose to fatten up for the big winter. And so your body fights against you in many ways, especially when you're trying to lose a significant amount of weight.
EL: I've always found that true. I once went on the Atkins diet in college. Remember the Atkins diet?
TT: I do.
EL: And I ate so little fruit I actually got scurvy.
TT: That's dedication. I have to tell you.
EL: I mean it's crazy, dude.
TT: You were the last person who wasn't a pirate to get scurvy.
EL: I was the last person who wasn't a pirate that got scurvy. So what's interesting to me is you say you're a journalist so you're into deadlines and here is my deadline. "By the end of 2015, one year from now, I'm going to lose weight and get in shape. I'm not going to set a number because every time I've done that I've fallen short. My goal is to prove that I can head down the right path and stay on it. I have to show that I won't quit even when it's hard because it's going to be hard. And if I get to the end of the year and I've failed every option goes back on the table. Bootcamp, pills, surgery, everything. I have a long history of doing this the wrong way. I've thought about the few simple things that might help me do it right. But it will take more than just a meal plan and a walk every morning. I have to dig deep." Again, that really spoke to me because there have been various times in my life where it's like, "Okay. Enough with the bullshit. You're just going to have to do this the only right way to do it. You eat less." And you know when you're eating less. And my body at least, and I'm sure your body does too, it tells you when you haven't. You get on the scale. Like I had a... Can I admit this to you, Tommy? I've got to admit this to you. I had a Popeyes' feast for Superbowl.
TT: Oh, wow.
EL: I love Popeyes.
TT: Popeyes is fantastic.
EL: I mean but then I got on the scale and I've been pretty good at keeping my weight down to around 230, 228 sometimes. And I got on the scale. Two days later and I was at 235. It's like, "Yeah, see. Scale doesn't lie." The ball doesn't lie. A lot of things don't lie.
TT: That's right. And there are direct consequences to all those terrible meals I ate over the years. But a big part of, for me, and I think for most people who are significantly overweight if you just have a few pounds to lose, you could probably just figure out how to do it. But if you have a significant amount of weight to lose, the how is never enough. You have to start talking about the why.
TT: And in fact the majority of this book is about me trying to figure out why I got so big in the first place.
EL: Yeah, exactly.
TT: And then understanding myself better helped me sort of unlock the ways to turn it around.
EL: Which is what we're going to get into in your next episode of Special Sauce. So we're going to have to leave it right here for now. Thank you very much, Tommy Tomlinson. It's really been a pleasure. Serious Eaters we'll be back next week so we can find out what is going on with Tommy and what he did discover when he went on this incredible journey. A Blessed 2018
Time flies so fast! Indeed, another fruitful year to welcome.
2018 has been the most amazing year for me. I had so many challenges to surpass and I blessedly conquered them. Two more sleep and here we are, about to welcome the unknown 2019. It wasn’t so long and it feels like January was just yesterday.
Tumblr media
It was earlier of January when I started working to my current company. Who would have thought that a Human Resource’s major receives an award for being the Best Accounting Employee for Purchasing Department? The main reason why I failed being a Cumlaude, having grade below of 82, is now my everyday work. Sorry, for I can’t get over it hehe.
At first, I was really about to give up and longing for what my passion is, Recruiting, but look, I am still here and going one year. Well, I am not saying that I already give up my dream being an HR, rather, I enjoyed being with numbers and unending processing of everyday payments. It is not that bad having experience of what I hated before. Also, I got to be friends with lots of people especially Hard Block Team but due to having HR heart, who would I be more friendly with? Of course, the Human Resource and Admin Department. I am so blessed on how our Director and my Accounting Manager even loves me being in Accounting (because I already mastered some works), My HR Family was still there and waiting for me to become part of them. They even reserved one slot for me. Sadly, my Accounting Family really needs me.
February, who will forgot Valentine’s Day? The day where my hair got loose to Paranaque City all the way from Mandaluyong City. It was the time when I got a bouquet of roses, chocolates, and even Jollibee Fries-my all time favorite. Its really unexpected because my hubby and I decided not to meet that day, for that is Wednesday, and we already have plans on Saturday. But him, being so nice and sweet, sent those to my office with a note:
“Another days passes by is another day seeing you. I love you.”
So not to ruin the day, we ended up seeing each other and he even fetch me after work.
March, here comes the Matcha Month! I honestly don’t like matcha before- not until James introduce this to me. We are just experimenting toppings for our McDo Sundae and I usually take Chocolate Syrup and Crunched Oreo with me, but to try something new, I let him chose the toppings for me. Viola! That’s when I started to love matcha. Since that day, I became addicted to matcha and here’s James spoiling me more. He even dated me in a matcha cafe and ate layers of matcha cake.
April, our first anniversary. The day we met each other in online game. We promised that we will be having “stay-cation” every April of the year and its our first one. Nothing special. Honestly, being with him makes it special. We just bought groceries in the market, cooked liempo, watched television and swam in pool, (not to mention but I brought my youngest sister with me). It sounds boring, yeah, but there’s something about it that makes it memorable.
May, the celebration of his 23rd Birthday! We celebrated his birthday at Star City. He once told me that he wants to have a date in Amusement Park. So on his birthday, I surprised him to an unlimited rides. He’s still kid when he first went to Star City so I am lucky enough that he will feel it as if it was his first time. You know what’s the best part? He’s really bad at rides. Really, super bad.
June, days passed by and I celebrated my birthday. 21 years of being annoying… but caring. No phone, so no selfies. I celebrated it at work and I am truly amazed how they prepared those food for my birthday. That was fun! My hubby treated me in Mang Inasal for I have so much love for unlimited rice. I even satisfied my cravings for Crema de Leche and sang ourselves to hoarseness in Karaoke Hub.
Tumblr media
July, the much awaiting part of the year. The Toyota Free Music Festival at Filinvest City! We got to see December Avenue (not me because I’m still falling in line), Ransom Collective, Ben & Ben, IV of Spades, Cueshe, River Maya, Silent Sanctuary, Callalily, 6 Cyclemind, Ebe Dancel, Hale, Spongecola, my forever love Parokya ni Edgar and Ely Buendia!! It was truly fun and exciting! We even soaked in rain. Wet clothes, wet hair, sweat, muddy shoes, but it’s absolutely fantastic. I am so happy that I got the chance to spent it with my hubby. It’s not our first time watching bands live but it is one of the bomb!
August, the roller coaster month! It feels kinda scary, happy, thrilling but fulfilling! I got to visit his home in Pasig City and even met his parents and siblings. They were really fun to be with. It was my first time but it really went out well. We just watched movies, basketball games, volleyball and ate foods we brought after watching A Day After Valentine’s (our first movie together because I kept on rejecting his movie dates offer). His mom surprisingly gave me perfume (which is his sister’s business) that really makes me fluttered. They call it “Be Delicious”. I teasingly told my hubby that from now on, I will only use that perfume for the rest of my life so whenever he smells it, he will think of me even if his at home.
November, this is a very special month. My grandparents, on my mother side, go to city to spent Christmas and New Year with us! Seeing them really makes my heart overwhelmed. Also, I got to see Lolo Bear, my hubby’s beloved grandfather, as well as his closed Auntie and his cousins, when we visited Lola Bear in cemetery. I was also invited to spent Christmas with my hubby’s family. He’s invited with us, as well, if you are asking. We also won the Scariest Theme for Halloween! Congratulations, Accounting Department! We are totally jjang!
December, hits end of the month party! We ended the year with a big Christmas Party with a Chinese theme. My hubby helps me decide what to wear and I ended up wearing simple yet elegant black dress. Due to circumstances, I didn’t have the chance to spent Christmas with him- and not to feel the guilt, I let someone deliver the cakes and wine for them at his grandfather’s house, where they are celebrating. Luckily, the delivery is not too late. Though travelling from South to North makes the cakes’ cute design ruined, it still didn’t stop him from smiling big time. Also, we celebrated the Sabigan’s Christmas Tradition, not complete again, but its still totally wonderful!
2018 gave me so much blessings and overflowing love. I am looking forward to the new chapter of my life.
This is Sionefer, your lovable friend, cheering for 2019 with full of love!

Lilac
Lilac: First LovePairing: Bambam/YugyeomCharacter: Bambam, Yugyeom, Jinyoung, Youngjae and Jaebum (mentioned), OCRating: PG-13A/N: I really craved some Yugbam as parents and I took the liberty to do that and also made Jinyoung as their kid lol. I’m sorry it took so long but please enjoy ^^ (It’s about 2k long)Yugyeom panicked as he smell something burnt. His fried rice smoked behind him while he was searching for the cheese in the refrigerator. “Shit” he muttered under his breath, running to the stove with the cheese in his hands. Luckily, he managed to safe the said fried rice. Cooking was never really his thing but Bambam came home so late last night he didn’t have a heart to woke him up and made breakfast so yugyeom tried to put his limited skill of cooking—that he got when he had to survive everytime Bambam was not around to feed him—on action. Not that bad.
“Jinyoung, has you prepared the table?” He shouted to his son in the dining room.
No answer. The dining table was prepared perfectly when he walked in. Jinyoung already sat down on his chair, eyes not leaving the book on his hands, as expected from his son, the smart and perfectionist Jinyoung. Yugyeom smiled slightly, he really didn’t have any idea how they could raise a kid like him.Bambam was walking into the room right after Yugyeom finished putting the rice on the table and added grated cheese on top, completed their favorite breakfast recipe. Their daughter laughing in his hands from the nonstop pecks Bambam gave all over her face. “I smeel something burning,” was the first words he said followed by the giggling of their daughter. He was sniffing around exaggerately. Yugyeom was ready to defend himself when Bambam added, “It’s the smeel of my heart burning with love for you.” Then he winked. Their daughter looked at both of them, interested.Fifteen years living with bambam and yugyeom still didn’t know how to react to his cheesiness. While bambam put their daughter down to the chair and ruffled Jinyoung’s hair before walking around the table to sat on his chair, Yugyeom hurriedly took off his apron and sat down beside him, willed the red flush on his cheeks to disappear as he saw jinyoung rolled his eyes across the table. It was their usual Saturday morning, having breakfast together leisurely while talking about their week, their plan for the weekend, everything. Jinyoung put his book aside as they began their breakfast. Their daughter ate passionately beside Jinyoung, wanting to show off that she already mastered how to use spoon properly. Yugyeom might cry a little bit inside knowing his fried rice not as good as what bambam made but his family still eat it well. “Cheonsa, eat slowly, darling” Yugyeom warned her gently, afraid she will choked on her food.“My princess has grown up so much, now she won’t even let me feed her,” Bambam shed his fake tears. Bambam had the biggest soft spot for their daughter. Maybe because he always wanted a daughter that he could pamper so bad, or because Cheonsa was raised by them since she was a baby, or maybe both. “I want to grow up fast, like Jinyoung oppa,” their three years old daughter announced proudly, looking up at Jinyoung with a big smile, which the later returned just as big. Yugyeom smiled at that and Bambam whined how his princess loved her oppa more than her daddy.  And that’s how their usual Saturday morning went. Jinyoung mostly silent unless he had something to ask but Yugyeom knew Jinyoung always payed attention to everything going on around him, especially his sister. He also knew Jinyoung always spared his time to play with her everyday between his school and his busy life as a teenager. “What book are you reading?” Yugyeom pointed at his book on the table with his chin. Bambam and Cheonsa were having an exiting conversation about alien on the side.“A novel.” He answered shortly, but looking at the expectant look of his father he continued. ”It’s about a wife of someone who could time travel.”“Sounds interesting. Is it good?”“It is so far, I haven’t finished.”“You should tell me when you finish it.” Yugyeom said, adding another spoon of rice on his plate. Cooking had depleted his energy, apparently.“Okay.” Yugyeom loved time they spent together where his son told him about the book he finished, he felt they became a little closer. They adopted him when he was 7 years old. After years of their marriage, Yugyeom and Bambam contemplated on having kid but when they met Jinyoung, the biggest kid in the orphanage, the kid with twinkling eyes that somehow screamed loneliness, they were sure they wanted to become his father. It’s not easy to crack his sheel and get him opened up to them, but they made it. it’s been five years since then and Jinyoung grew up so well. Yugyeom was grateful they took him.“Son, Youngjae said you haven’t come to the reading club for two weeks, what happened? Do you want me to drive you later?” Bambam asked. “Daddy,” Jinyoung whined, “I’m not a little kid anymore. It’s fine.”“Kids nowadays grown up too fast.” Bambam sighed. “When I was your age I’m still this small,” Bambam motioned his hands to showed his height, “And people still bought me ice cream.” Yugyeom only chuckled because well, Bambam, indeed was still looked like a kid even when he was above Jinyoung’s age. He was so  cute, still cute.
They continued eating with Bambam cooed exaggeratedly at his daughter everytime she successfully eat her food from her spoon.“Appa, when do you have your first love?” Jinyoung asked Yugyeom carefully.
Bambam immediately turned his head and look at Jinyoung with wide eyes.“Are you seeing someone right now??” Bambam gasped. Cheonsa also turned her attention to Jinyoung in an instant, not because she understand what’s so big deal about it, but because she had a habit of mimicking her daddy. Cheonsa is taking her personalities from Bambam too much. “Is it that scray boy Bum something?“ Bambam preened. Jinyoung, had been put on the spotlight, sputtered. “It’s Jaebum hyung. He’s not scary and it’s not related to him. It’s just.., just the main character on the book I read had her first love when she was 6. I’m just curious.” “Oho… I’m sure there’s something.” Bambam started, but Yugyeom quickly stopped him before he went further with the teasing. He could see Jinyoung was uncomfortable with the topic.“Well, I had my first love when I was 16,” Yugyeom drew the attention to him instead.“Ah, that noona on the coffee shop? Kids, your Appa always drag me to the coffee shop just to met her. He’s so lame right?” Bambam said in conspirational tone to their kids. “No, idio- Bam,” Yugyeom almost slipped a ‘bad word’ and mentally patting himself on the back for keeping his language in front of their children. “It was you, duh.”“Really?” Jinyoung surprised. Yugyeom just nod.“Really?” Now, it was coming from Bambam. His eyebrow rose so high. “Yep.” “Really?“ Cheonsa didn’t want to be left out.“Why you never tell me? You said you like that Noona. Wait, is that why you always drag me there? Not for her? Was I, like, having dates with you, unconciously? Did we date???” Bambam was talking with his mouth full it’s actually disgusting but adorable at the same time with his eyes widen comically. Yugyeom just shrughed and leaned forward to wipe a rice on Cheonsa’s cheek. “Was Dad not liking you back?” Jinyoung asked curiously.“No.” Yugyeom said.“Yes” Bambam said at the same time.“What?””…“It became awkward after that and Bambam was a little quiet so Yugyeom squeezed his husband’s thigh under the table and added, “Meeting your daddy is the best thing ever happened to me. And look at us, sitting here together.”***“Hey.”“Hey.” Bambam smiled weakly. “You should put her on her bed, you’ll get cram if you stay like that too long.”Yugyeom carefully fitted himself beside Bambam on the swing in their backyard and gave him a can of soda, trying not to wake up their daughter  who was sleeping peacefully on Bambam’s lap, her head nestled safely on his chest. He brought a drink for himself too and his now empty hand found Bambam’s shoulder and pulled him closer. Bambam scotted and rested his head on Yugyeom’s shoulder.“It’s okay. I miss her. I barely spend time with her.” Bambam kissed the top of her head. “She missed you a lot too.” “I was thinking about what you said before.” Bambam said in hushed voice.“Which one?”“Breakfast.”“Oh, me too.” Yugyeom sipped his chocolate milk. He probably a fourthy something and he had changed a lot but his love for chocolate was an exception.“Why you didn’t tell me?” Bambam nudged Yugyeom.“I- I was scared I guess. I don’t want to lose our friendship.” “Is that why you were crying so much when I went back to Thailand?”“I knew you were supposed to left anyway, but I guess I really was a cry baby.“ “Is, a cry baby.” Bambam cut him.
Yugyeom ignored the teasing. “You were here only for the exchange study and I didn’t want to burden you.” “You should told me. I always told you everything.”“You didn’t tell me you like me.” Yugyeom countered back. “Did you really like me back then?”“At first, yes. But then I thought you liked that Noona so I buried that feeling deep down inside my heart, you know.” “What? Really?” Yugyeom mused unbelievably.
“We could be the cutest couple in high school,”
“Why were we so stupid?” they chuckled. But that’s what brings us together,” Bambam grins at Yugyeom, earned a peck from the later. “I can’t believe I only found out now,”  he sighed once yugyeom’s lips leaving his. “You never asked.” Yugyeom whispered, resting the side of his forehead against Bambam, his cheek brushing his hair. “Because I’m sure your first love was That noona and I don’t want to talk about her.” Yugyeom just leaned down and kiss Bambam’s pouty lips once again with more pressure. “I guess we’re fated. God sent you again from Thailand to Korea to meet me. I almost didn’t recognize you when we first met for the second time.” Yugyeom smiled at the memory.“Yeah, me too.” Bambam pulled him for another kiss. He would want more than that but he settled for a long lingering kiss as Cheonsa was still sleeping on his laps.***"Appa, is Daddy really your first love?” Jinyoung asked him as they washing the dish from their dinner. “Yes, why?” Yugyeom smiled at Jinyoung. His father instinct told him there’s something going on with his son. “Is there something you want to ask, or tell me?” Yugyeom coaxed, knowing very well his son is so much like him, or worse, Jinyoung won’t tell his problem unless he was asked.“No, just… Isn’t first love never works?”“Who said that?”“A book I read.” “Jinyoung, what’s written in the book is not always right. What always right is what your heart says.“"But what if you love the wrong person?”Yugyeom was a little taken aback by that and shook his head. “You definitely more mature than your age.” He put aside his dishes to face Jinyoung. “So, who is this wrong person we talked about?” “No one,” Jinyoung muttered, busying himself with pouring water on the dish. “Are you afraid your first love not going to work?” Jinyoung’s silence only meant yes. “I never thought I will marry your daddy, he seemed so far away.  But look at us. My first love works perfectly. I have your daddy, you, and your sister, and I’m the happiest person in the world.”Jinyoung looked up at Yugyeom.“ But it’s you, not me.”“Exactly. It’s me. And You, you’ll make your own story, even greater than mine.” Yugyeom smiled at him. “If you’re afraid to start something, you’ll never know what you can achieve.”Yugyeom let his word sinked in before he continued soaping the plate, but suddenly Jinyoung hugged him.
“Whatever happened, I always have you, right?” Jinyoung mumbled on his chest.Yugyeom hugged his son back, overwhelmed with the feeling of pride as a father, that his son trust him so much, and patted him on his back. “Sure son, sure.”
The serene moment was not live long, not in this house.
“What is this? Are we having family hug session? Why you left us out?!” Came a whine from his husband standing in the door with Cheonsa holding his hand at his side.
Yugyeom just opened one of his arm to invite him in a hug and in a second Bambam already crushed them with his limb, Jinyoung groaned at that, and Cheonsa fussed to be lifted up to joined the hug. Yugyeom laughed happily because right now, he had everything he wanted in his arm, literally.

How often do you eat your favorite food?  Very seldom do I get to have burgers because the good ones are usually quite expensive and I don’t want to waste my parents’ allowance on selfish stuff like that; I’d say I have them once every couple of months. I get Yabu at least once a month though, that’s something I kinda make sure I’ve saved enough for.
Have you ever fallen asleep on public transport? (including planes): When we have family car trips that run through the night, I do sleep but only for a short while because I feel bad when we all fall asleep and my dad has no choice but to continue driving. I’ve only fallen asleep on a plane once and that was because we spent like seven or eight hours waiting at the airport with nothing to do, and for some reason that made me so tired.
What room of the house are you in right now? My room. My day hasn’t gone well and I haven’t had the energy to go downstairs.
What was the last tv show you watched?  Descendants of the Sun.
Have you been using Apple Music? No thanks.
Do you pay rent for the place you live? How often?  My parents don’t.
How do you feel at this particular moment? Anything on your mind? Exhausted, a little heavy, and resigned. Yes, but I’m taking this survey now precisely because I don’t want that stuff to occupy my mind too much.
Where was the last place you went on vacation/holiday to? Who’d you go with? Albay with my parents. We were there for three or four days, which I consider to be more of a vacation than the weekend trip we had in Tagaytay.
List all the colors you’re currently wearing.  Brown, black, and scarlet.
What’s your favorite type of doughnut?  I like smaller, local brands that make their doughnuts fresh, and may have gourmet selections as well. The only place I know that does this is Cello’s, near my school.
What do you usually eat for breakfast?  I normally skip it but with my whole family home for quarantine, we’ve been having breakfast every single day since March. That said, we typically have steamed or fried rice, eggs, hotdogs, bacon, longganisa, and some kind of dried dish like danggit or tuyo.
Do you have any candles in your bedroom? Do you light them often? Nope, never invested on candles before.
Can you touch your toes without bending your knees?  Yep. I used to be able to, then I wasn’t able to for a very long time, then after having my really rigorous PE class two semesters ago I was able to do it again.
When was the last time you went out for dinner?  First Monday of March.
Have you seen all the Hunger Games films as of current?  I’ve seen the first one because they aired it on TV a thousand times at one point in like, 2013. Never got to see the rest.
What was the last thing you said to someone else in person? “You here?” I was talking to Kimi in the dark.
Do you use Windows, Mac, Linux, or something else entirely? Mac.
How many times do you call someone on the phone a week?  2-3 times a week maybe? Gab and I don’t need to call each other everyday, and a fewer calls mean I’m more excited when one does happen haha.
Have you cooked anything today? What was it?  Nope.
Do you have a lot of cousins? What are their names? First cousins would be Gage, Elijah, Cholo, Toffe, Bia, Lei, Kesler, AJ, Kent, Seth, and Sam. The second cousins that I know of are Ben, Nico, Selah, Luke, Maggie, Bree, Isabella, and Jethro – I have tons of family living in the US and those include second cousins I’ve never met, and I also have many other second cousins on my dad’s side that I was able to name none of here because we aren’t at all close with that side, and I’ve never had a relationship with those cousins. I only know a handful of third cousins, namely Nicole, Elliott, and Kristen. What does your shampoo smell like? Idk, it doesn’t have a distinct scent and is just one of the basic Dove shampoos.
What about the body wash or soap you’re using at the moment? The scent is called bourbon vanilla.
Have you ever had an exotic or unusual pet? Are horses unusual?  My sister had a chick for a few days. They definitely are here, but I don’t know about other places.
Any movies you’ve seen recently that you’d recommend to me? Not a movie sorry, but I just watched Vice TV’s Dark Side of the Ring documentary on Owen Hart and it’s sooooooo fucking brilliant. Its production value is just astounding, and they did not fuck around with the sources they chose to speak in the piece. I recommend anybody – even if you’ve never watched or been interested in wrestling before – to go see it, because the storytelling is so great the outsider-est outsider would be able to understand and appreciate its narration, and see exactly how fucked-up the industry is.
Why did you last go see a doctor? Oh my god, this has been on every survey recently...eye appointment. At that time my left eye twitched and teared up whenever I wake up and when I’d head to bed, and in random times during the day. It’s gotten better during the quarantine, but I’ll still sometimes get the occasional attack.
Do you know how to play Minesweeper? Yes. I don’t have the patience for it though. < Ugh same. I’ve never won a game, and I just never had the appetite to keep trying lol
What was the last thing you bought online? The last time I answered this saying a Hydro Flask and a couple of necklaces, but now that I remember more clearly, Andrew and I did get Chinese food from online a few days before classes got suspended.
Where do you usually park your car? There’s some extra bare space beside our actual carport that’s super super tiny, but we found out my car could fit in so that’s where I park it so it could be in the shade. To this day I’m the only one who can effortlesly fit it in after doing it everyday for four years in college, as my parents are too scared hahaha.
Does your mail get delivered to your house or do you have to collect it?  House. As far as I know, that’s how it works for the whole country.
Are you more logical or creative?  Logical. My creativity is for sure in the negatives.
Do you cut tags out of clothing so they don’t itch and bother you? Only if it incredibly bothers me and if it’s not that big a brand. If it’s a big name, I’d rather suffer the itch.
What is your dream job? Do you think that’s attainable for you?  The dream job is still to do PR for WWE, but I’ve been questioning that decision more and more lately because they’re turning out to be such a shit company and I don’t want to end up selling out and launching fake-ass cheery articles and campaigns to paint the company in a nicer light, despite the many shitstorms it is currently and has always been embroiled in. I do think it’s attainable, since it’s generally easier to get into WWE corporate than be in the branch that does events and gets to be on TV, but I’ll have to do a lot of thinking on this particular path.
When was the last time you looked at Facebook, Twitter or etc.?  30 minutes ago, maybe.
Have you ever been on a train? Where did you go?  Just one. Jum and I went to the Senate for a journalism class. I would’ve driven but I hate driving in Manila.

Healthy Diet for Hemorrhoids Prevention
Following a healthy diet for hemorrhoids prevention is not only great for colon and digestive health, but astounding for one’s entire body inside and out. People that eat a healthy diet feel fantastic inside while their outer appearance looks radiant. It will improve your overall quality of life.
Unhealthy fatty junk food and processed foods that lack nutritional value play a major role in poor colon and digestive health. Eating a high-fight and cholesterol diet could be setting you up for hemorrhoids to appear in or around the rectum and anus. This is condition people want to avoid.
Hemorrhoids develop as inflamed growths caused by a swollen vein or group of swollen veins located in and around the anal cavity.
The symptoms are extremely unpleasant to live with. Hemorrhoids cause a terrible stinging itch that has been described by some hemorrhoid sufferers as constant.
Scratching irritates hemorrhoids more, but if you have ever dealt with chronic itch you can understand why people scratch and scratch. It is a desperate attempt at gaining a very momentary feeling of relief.
I have been there when I had an external hemorrhoid once and later in life psoriasis had me scratching until I bled on occasion. Not a very delightful situation for any person to be in.
If hemorrhoid itch wasn’t enough agony for a person to endure add in chronic burning pain where walking, sitting or using the restroom can bring tears to your eyes.
Hemorrhoids are horrible and make what used to be simple everyday functions a painful exercise. Hemorrhoid patients hate the idea of having to move around because it is so difficult when you have severe inflammation of the rectum or around the anus opening.
A healthy diet for hemorrhoids prevention will cut the risk of the developing this health condition that affects millions of people a year. It also an extremely affordable diet that will save you money while improving your overall health.
Healthy Diet for Hemorrhoids Prevention
Drink at least 8 glasses (8 oz) of water a day.
Avoid processed food and unhealthy snacks.
Take a daily fiber supplement and multivitamin daily.
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables.
Take Fargelin Plum Flower Pills to improve colon health (check with your doctor before using). Eat plenty of foods made from whole grains and bran.
Add a delicious variety of beans, lentils and brown rice as side dishes to baked or grilled skinless chicken or fish.
Cut way back on red meat and when you do eat it choose extra lean cuts or extra lean ground beef. Snack on your favorite raw unsalted nuts and seeds.
Using a natural colon cleanse maintains regular healthy bowel movements (check with your doctor before using).
This is simple for anyone to do and will help prevent hemorrhoids from developing due to irregularity and chronic constipation. I’ve been eating like this for 6 months now and feel more energetic. My bowel movements are like clockwork.
A major cause of my hemorrhoids was constantly struggling and straining to pass a bowel movement. The increased pressure to the veins located inside of the rectum and around the anus is forced to expand unnaturally leading to painful anal area inflammation.
My past diet was a Starbucks Coffee Frappuccino®, raspberry scone or butter croissant to go for breakfast on the way to the office. Lunch was fast food or one of the casual dining chains located around the office. I would drink Diet Coke throughout the work day instead of water.
When I got home our dinners were based on a kid friendly menu. We ate plenty of macaroni and cheese, hamburger helper, fish sticks, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, hot dogs, pizza, and breaded chicken patties. It became our normal diet routine while watching television.
I feel that you need to eat foods that are not the healthiest choices from time to time. I have a decadent dinner once a month to feed a food craving for tasty edibles like extra cheese Chicago style deep dish pizza, fettuccini alfredo, cobb salad with blue cheese dressing, chile rellenos, corned beef on rye with Russian dressing and a tasty desert.
The rest of the month I stick to eating healthy and keep exercising on a regular schedule. I’ve had hemorrhoids once in my life and never want to go through that dreadful experience again. It had such a negative impact on my way of life that I ended being depressed as well as being in constant pain and discomfort.
Taking care of your digestive and colon health starts with a healthy hemorrhoids prevention diet like this one that cuts the risk of ever having to experience painful anal itch. It’s not going to be easy to change your eating habits overnight, in time it will become easier and easier to eat healthy.
