It is the Ides of March. You have nothing going on, and aren't expecting visitors, deliveries or post.
Unexpectedly, there is a knock at the door.
Which of these would surprise you more to find on the doorstep..

the akatsuki, ranked by how good of a retail coworker they would be:
Deidara - 6/10. He is not here to work. He is here to go off on wild tangents, and does not give a shit about things like “a professional environment” or “caring about customers”. Bonus points because I could, with little effort, aim him at the more annoying customers and have him Be Himself at them, ensuring they never return. Loses points because I am very easily stressed out by a lot of customers, and he would not care. There is a line, deidara, please at least be slightly helpful. You can talk about Art all you want just get the next customer before we have to deal with the manager. Occasionally just does not show up to work, which is also. Very Stressful.
Sasori - 3/10. Much like Deidara, he also does not really care about this job. He will show up exactly on time and leave exactly on time, regardless of whether or not the person scheduled for the next shift is here. Loses many points because he does not care for coworker chit chat and he also does not do companionable silence well either. Would likely find my habit of coming into work 5 minutes late all the time very annoying. Customers aren’t even here yet, dude. Please stop glaring at me.
Itachi - 7/10. He will regularly show up and actually do his job efficiently and without complaint. Silence feels much less hostile, but also feels like he’s ignoring you. This is because he is, most likely, ignoring you. Has his own insane method of organizing the supplies that is “clearly the most efficient” (read: its the way he likes it, and he has convinced himself that everyone else is Wrong about the way they like things.) Can be made friendly (well. friendlier.) with the cunning application of a caramel mocha frappuccino with extra whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
Kisame - 10/10. He is very large and intimidating, but not in a mean way. The kind of coworker you could shoot the shit with. The only coworker on this list who, should someone else call in, you could reliably get to help cover the shift so it’s not just you behind the counter dear god. Notably, he’s not the only one on the list who would be willing to come in, but he’s the only one who is both willing and you would actively want him to come in. Given his introduction to Itachi being “I Hope You Like Shark Facts,” I feel like he would enjoy me spouting off random tangents I remember from college classes. I also feel like he would be willing to weaponize his intimidation skills on Problem Customers. Not like, customers who are just irritating, but specifically the kind of customer who follows girls to their cars after closing shift.
Pein - (Specifically, only Yahiko’s body. We do not need 5 more of him.) 5/10. Has political beliefs and is willing to share them. These political beliefs may or may not lean uncomfortably close to domestic terrorism at times. Very competent when at work and is possibly a department manager. Occasionally cannot be reached at all, and does not give excuses the next day. Whereas Deidara is simply playing hooky because he does not care, maybe you don’t want to know what Pein was doing yesterday. Plausible Deniability, and all that. You have absolutely no idea what his and Konan’s relationship actually is.
Konan - 4/10. She’s like Pein but her range of facial expressions does not begin and end with “Stoic glowering”. Is usually the first person in, and is in charge of ordering supplies and The Schedule. Somehow has perfect make up and hair despite showing up at 6am in the goddamn morning. Is willing to give you the day off if you inform her ahead of time. Unexplained absences will involve her having A Talk with you. You will not enjoy this. Not an actual manager with the power to fire you, but she has Expectations for things and you will do your very best to meet them, is that clear. If you Succeed in Performing to her and Pein’s Expectations™, she might ask you to do “small, non-work related favors” for her. Saying no very quickly stops becoming an option.
Tobi - 1/10. Points for occasionally being entertaining. Loses... so many points because working with him is an actual nightmare. You thought Deidara not actually working was bad, Tobi manages to invent new problems that you have to solve. He will “accidentally” start a fire if left unsupervised. Has somehow not been fired, despite everything. Displeasing Konan runs the risk of having to work the same shift as him. Tobi is willing and able to cover shifts whenever the need might arise. Even when you didn’t call him to ask. Usually, it’s because someone else (*cough* Deidara *cough*) decided to helpfully ask him to cover their shift for you. Tobi is helping! Tobi is not, by any stretch of the imagination, helping.
Hidan - 0/10. Pein and Konan may be slightly scary and probably secretly doing shady things together outside of work, and Tobi might be extremely annoying to work with, but Hidan has absolutely killed someone before. Possibly multiple people. Working alone with him is extremely uncomfortable, because he will talk at you at length. Disagreeing with him runs the risk of him getting shouty and possibly violent with you. Agreeing with him runs the risk of him deciding that he should talk to you more often. Neither of these is a good thing. Will steal your nametag and be ruder than usual to customers while wearing it.
Kakuzu - 4/10. Unpleasant to be around. Large and intimidating but absolutely in a mean way. He does not care if you slack off at work, provided it does not mean more work for him. Does not give a single shit about this job other than it being a paycheck. Will come in to help cover if someone else calls in, but only if you pay for his gas money. And lunch. And the minutes on his phone spent during this phone call. And also $20 just on principle. Will do a perfectly fine job otherwise. Actively checks job postings and possibly his stock portfolio while at work. Is willing to be a buffer against Hidan - not because you feel uncomfortable (unless you’re paying him to be a buffer), but because Hidan is annoying him.
Zetsu - 5/10. He’s... polite? Not very interesting to talk to, but not really uncomfortable to be around. Once gave you what you suspect was a slightly-weed laced brownie. Several months after you’ve left this horrible job, you see him on a news report, having been convicted of several murders. You are extremely glad that you no longer work there.

In lieu of writing a story, I decided to spend far too much time writing an essay like post on a topic that’s been on my mind recently.
***
Recently I’ve been thinking about characters who change over the course of a series. Particularly, characters who start out fairly normal or serious and then become increasingly more silly, ridiculous, or stupid. For instance, Frank Burns from MASH, Marty Deeks and Eric Beale from NCIS: LA, and Eric Matthews from Boy Meets World, and Tony from NCIS to name a few.
It could be argued that each of these characters had a comedic quality from the beginning. However, comedy was not their sole or defining characteristic. At some point though, the writers seemed to realize that they had a gift for comedy and leaned into that side. The problem is that this occurs with increasing frequency and often without reason.
Some start out as an antagonist, such as Frank Burns. In his first season, he’s described as a “fair” surgeon. He can be ridiculous at times, but is competent enough and mostly known for being overly by the book and military crazed. By the end of his run on the series, he’s a terrible surgeon, constantly makes a fool of himself, and finally ends up chasing after his now married mistress. In this case, instead of making Frank increasingly nasty or, he was made ridiculous to highlight why he wasn’t a suitable leader or surgeon.
In many shows that lean towards the more serious, it’s common to have a character who breaks up the angst, drama, and heaviness. Enter the likes of Eric Beale and Marty Deeks. Though they remained comparatively unscathed compared to some, both characters suffered in the name of comedy.
Eric Beale was a highly skilled tech operator who kept things running from behind the scenes and was critical to the team solving cases. Yet as the series progressed he went an eccentric genius to often odd and ridiculous.
From the beginning of his introduction, Deeks was established as a master at undercover, uniquely intelligent, and capable of using people’s assumptions about himself to his own advantage. Yes, he always talked a lot, but there was usually a purpose. Even in moments when he rambled, it was genuinely funny and not overplayed. However, as the series progressed the very writers who created this extremely intriguing, intelligent, and competent man, seemed to forget these aspects.
In an arc where Deeks is sent to the federal academy, we should have seen him excel. He had years of experience and knowledge compared to his younger peers. Instead, he seemed to forget how engage in arm-to-arm combat, fell asleep during an important task, and could barely keep up during a run. For many fans, this felt like a betrayal of a beloved character we knew.
Often, funny characters are sacrificed to promote a new character. Particularly as a series progresses, instead of letting the newbie gain popularity naturally, they force their merits by downgrading an established character.
You might be wondering, what’s the point of all this? Well, a lot of fans care when their favorite character changes drastically, especially not in a positive way. There’s a difference between a character who can be funny or has select silly/stupid moments, and one who becomes a caricature. We build fandoms our these characters. We invest hours and time, energy and love into writing about them, drawing, and discussing them. Of course it matters when it feels like that same character has been mistreated and disrespected.
I wish that before writers decide to go for the easy laugh, for the stupid joke, for the ridiculous, that they consider the impact on the character and show. It not only destroys your audience’s trust, but also makes it unbelievable when the character is given any content of substance.

hello rain world tumblr. in my rain world fic, Taking the High Road, i accidentally created a conlang for scavengers. whoopsie.
that is not what im here to discuss, however. see, as a story about a slugcat and a scavenger traveling together, it was inevitable that the slugcat would start trying to learn 'scavengese.'
so i decided "scavs are basically humans so they can make all the sounds humans can, but scugs are like. cats. so they probably cant make all the sounds. how do i do that."
after about 20 seconds of consideration, i decided to try pronouncing my scavengese words without using my tongue, and just writing the sound that i made. it was quick, it was easy, and hey, it definitely wouldn't come up much (lie).
an innocent comment on my fic asking "hey how do you decide what scugs can and cant say" has sent my into a shower thought-fueled speculative biology session to retroactively justify my decisions. so, i'm gonna put that here, because someone will probably find it as interesting as me. anyway.
(tl;dr, click here for some speculative biology on how slugcat language works)
so, let us start with the basis for scug language, which is two facts: one, scugs are, at their core, moist cats which have evolved to the point of developing culture and language, and two, they go "wawawa." why do they go wawawa? because the entire community agreed on it and also I Said So. so how do we build a language around this?
so as we all know, cat language isn't language as we understand it. cats don't use words, they use stuff like purring and hissing and non-verbal cues. so, if cats suddenly constructed their own society like it was a Thing To Do, their language would probably involve those same things. so basically, natural slugcat language involves mostly non-verbal cues and sounds that humans cant make.
so now we come to the second part: why does rivulet go "wawawa" when they "talk" with moon?
well, my theory is that scugs have very immobile tongues and no teeth. bear with me here.
slugs, yknow, the base of slugcats other than cats, dont have tongues. they have a thing called a radula, which as far as i can tell, is basically a tonguelike thing covered in very small teeth. now, correct me if im wrong, but you probably wouldnt want a spiky meat sack flailing around your mouth, like we do with tongues.
also, look at scugs diet. theyre herbivores and insectivores, most of them being unable to eat meat (i imagine centipede flesh is quite soft once you get past the exoskeleton). the only scugs that can eat meat are hunter, artificer, gourmand, and spearmaster. three of these are genetically modified, hunter being specifically created to be a powerful warrior, spearmaster being... spearmaster, and artificer being the only scug with claws and also being able to Spontaneously Explode For Mobility.
gourmand is a special case, being yknow, a gourmand. they can eat meat from lizards and such, however it gives only half the pips of other meat eaters. this says to me that their system isnt built to handle meat, and they can only eat specific parts of these creatures. this is probably true of all slugcats, its just that gourmand has experience is what parts can and cant be eaten, them being the gourmand.
anyway my point here is, slugcats cant eat hard foods. think about what they eat. blue fruit is a bug chrysalis and therefore full of goo, bubble fruit seem to be made of some kind of gel, popcorn is popcorn, slime mold is slime, ect. ect. in the case of gooieducks, scugs have to rip off the hard casing in order to eat them. scugs are made to eat soft foods and liquids. so, they probably dont have teeth. or, if they do, they are affixed to their tongue, and previously discussed.
so why am i discussing scug diets in this post about scug language? well you see, dear reader, if scugs dont have lips, how do they hold their food in their mouth? their lips. and what is the main part of your mouth you use to go "wawawa?" thats right, your lips. scug lips are probably the most easy to use mouthpart they have
so, imagine youre ruffles. moon has been talking to you in her weird ancients language to you, which seems to consist entirely of mouth sounds (no throat sounds or non-verbal cues at all! how strange!) you love moon very much and want to make her happy, so you try to mimick her language. you arent used to using your mouth to speak very much, so what do you do? you just start making a sound and flapping your lips. and what sound does that make?
"wawawa."
and THAT, dear friends, is why scugs go wawawa.
