something i wish i'd see more in trigun fanarts is people having vash speak their native/non-english languages completely unprompted, ive seen folks have him speak french, which he canonically knows, but i really do believe he's a polyglot. mostly because of that one time in the desert when he saw the samurai and wanted to greet him in japanese but struggled to remember how to even say hello.

my headcanon is that rem had them learn as many languages as possible but with the big fall and so many people dying, which i think is what led english to became No man's land main (or even only?) language, means that vash (and knives!) both got horribly out of practice and are various sort of rusty in every others languages.

what im saying if there's any pun or joke you've been dying to write but just doesn't work in english vash (and knives!!) are right there!

You all know that one part in Well of Ascension where "Oreseur" jokes about eating Hammond like "One is, after all named "Ham"..."

Well that joke doesn't quite work when the book is translated to languages where ham doesn't have any food related meanings. So in the finnish translation the line goes like "I think he'd make a good ham-burger" which I honestly think is way funnier. Seriously hamburger? Are there even hamburgers in universe? Well it's not like impossible but honestly I can't picture it.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: I absolutely love hearing non-finnish people scream these finnish lyrics at gigs I love hearing everone's accents and knowing most of these people didn't know any finnish only a year ago but here they are screaming their lungs out in finnish and I will never stop getting emotional over it

If you care to entertain the thought:

The Finnish language has a gender neutral 3rd person pronoun for people and an "it" pronoun for objects & animals = not people. In official/book language at least. But 90% of the time in casual speech, we use "it" to refer to people as well. (It feels like night and day to use "it" in Finnish for people compared to English.)

Do you think Neo would thrive off of hearing people refer to it as "it" so casually if it interacted with (& translated) language speakers with this type of convention? Or would "it" being used like a "3rd person pronoun" feel strange/not fulfilling to Neo, due to the lack of distinction unless written down? (I assume "neutral 3rd person pronoun", by itself, might be like they/them for Neo?)

Similarly; you hc Omega with a strong he/him preference &, IIRC, an even stronger distaste for it/its. Would he tolerate a language that uses "it" so casually when meaning *3rd person pronoun*, not meant to sound objectifying in any way? + All while only having gender neutral pronouns in the first place, even if one was speaking properly (or in writing) & actively not using it/its. >No existing masculine pronouns to affirm gender anywhere (not counting using "Mr/Ms" type of titles).

I suppose it's up to interpretation on how difficult/easy it would be for them (compared to organic characters), to adjust to different language conventions like this, but I'm curious if you have any thoughts?

Ooooh, this is a fantastic question.

I think that Neo would be flattered with either pronoun! Sounds like both forms of "it" within the Finnish language lack a gender or pluralness- and gender is what Neo is seeking to avoid. It would be very pleased with this, and it would also wonder why it was programmed to think in a language as silly as English instead of the clearly superior Finnish. Neo's a bit more, shall we say, cerebral than Omega. I think it would adjust to the different language conventions very quickly.

Omega, meanwhile, would definitely have a preference. He would not tolerate the pronoun that's meant for objects and animals. He'd see it as incredibly demeaning, and you'd have to have a long talk with him to explain that the inanimate pronoun is not demeaning in the context of Finnish culture. He's got a little bit of a self-centered view of the world and doesn't handle the idea of different traditions very well? Mostly he just thinks they're weird and perceives himself as not being a part of any culture (despite that being untrue. He's kinda got the stereotypical American thing going on lol.) He's already a bit of a rebel in his own cultural context, let alone understanding the connotations of different cultures, if that makes any sense? He wouldn't adjust to the different language conventions very easily is what I'm saying.

I'm not an etymologist but as I just came back from voting in the Finnish parliamentary elections, I started thinking about about the words we have in Finnish about voting and elections.

First, vaalit (elections). While it probably comes from the verb valita (to choose), it also resembles the verb vaalia (to cherish). And while cherishing a candidate would be creepy, cherishing the right to choose has a beautiful, symbolic meaning. Especially as the first Finnish parliamentary elections ever were held in 1907 when Finland was still under Russian rule.

Second, ääni (a vote) and äänestää (to vote). More colloquially, ääni means a voice, so in elections one literally uses their voice to tell what they choose. And the word äänestä? Literally from one's voice; it's just lacking a suffix or a pronoun (mun äänestä, äänestäsi etc.) And thus the result of elections is a combination of everyone's voices.

So cherish your voice and right to choose.

So, Vantaa is a city that's part of the greater Helsinki region (Helsinki is our capital city). I think people that are from Vantaa often think of the as more simple and don't like getting grouped into other Helsinkians (people from Helsinki??? What are they called??). He likes to think he is just an ordinary small-city fellow, not a superstar by any means, and likes to stick to his roots and not make a big deal out of himself.

Vantaa is still an insanely big city, in Finland at least, 243 000 people is A LOT in here 😂 It's a culturally significant place with lots of museums, old churches and architecture, musical festivals, a big-ass science centre... It's now sort of fused in with the rest of the Helsinki metropolitan area, but still has a long and rich history on its own. I'm not a Vantaa expert, wikipedia probably has a way better (and more accurate) answer to that 😂

And what comes to the Finnish language... Well... It's one of the hardest languages to learn in the entire world 😅😅 It has insane grammar, crazy-long words, difficult pronunciation and worst of all, umlauts like å, ä and ö. You really have to have a burning passion for learning it, I won't lie.

The amount of grammatical cases is absolutely bonkers (14, or 15 if you count in accusative) and the rules sometimes contradict each other 😍😍 It really is a horrible language to learn, I'm so happy I'm a native so I don't have to think about it 😂 Also, there are two ways we can speak it, the literary version that is used in more official situations and then the spoken way, which is a sort of a dialect and can sound a bit different. And on top of that, there are even more dialects and regional shit HONESTLY I could talk about how bad it is for days 😂😂
