.... i have been so normal about wanting to draw tactical!Venus and tactical!Jennika.

some IDW TMNT comic spoilers... and.... I guess... Next Mutation ssspoilers? I know some of you kids haven’t turtled up and watched my beloved childhood iteration yet.

alright, so, y’know, completely normal expenditure of my energy and skillset, amirite? big big thanks to @/donathan for allowing me to play around in their AU’s aesthetic because I have severe, terminal VenusAndJennikaDeserveEverythingoccocal SoIWillManifestItMyselfitis.

and tbh, all y’all’s fics have been, mwah, chef’s kiss. but SOME of you put LORE. delicious, tasty, appetite-inducing lore.

and i am nothing but the littlest hoebag for lore.

okay so, quick rundown for those who both A) are immune to spoilers B) also do not know Venus or Jennika’s origins-- bulletpoint time~!

So Venus de Milo, the “girl turtle”, the “fifth turtle” (not counting April’s extremely brief stint as a white-bandana’d turtle in the Archie comics run) was introduced in 1997′s Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation

An episode of “The Toys That Made Us” touched upon Venus’ creation so idk it’ll cover what I won’t deign to acknowledge.

her backtory is interesting (just her show was a trashfire /affectionate)

Master Splinter’s frolicking around in the dreamscape where all the cool enlightened old people hang out away from teenagers, right?

but oh no! dragon lord, a bad dude with a widow’s peak to rival Vegeta Dragonball’s widow’s peak; is there too! stomping around, ruining shit!

Splinter’s dreamscape buddy Chung I warns Splinter to stay out of the dreamscape ‘cuz Dragon Lord’s around

And like in true old people fashion, just ignores his friend’s admonition and tries to investigate himself

bad choice, womp womp

Splinter gets trussed up and rendered “stuck” in the dreamscape

cue the catalyst for Venus to make the 10+ flight from China to the U.S

don’t worry about what the boys were doing, just literal surfing in sewer grey water, breaking their little turtle skulls on cinderblocks, and picking fights in warehouses with Foot clan goons

tl;dr Venus still has Sixth Ranger mode on, so naturally she whoops all of their asses in the dark, ties them up (like how some of y’all enjoy writing Leo does huhu nudgenudge winkwink)

and then, y’know, it’s still the 90s and children’s television so blah blah the usual “oH My gOd a GiRL tURTle???/?? AWoooOOogaaa ga ga ga”

it’s.... I mean, i’m 38 so it no longer strikes me as bad as just really fucking embarrassing... for them. to be written saying. fuck, at least they didn’t make her bandana color pink.

so fast forward to Venus teaching them to dreamwalk so they can go rescue Splinter from Dragon Lord’s clutches in the dreamscape.

unfortunately, Dragon Lord offscreen murders Chung I so Venus is narratively anchorless post-rescue, so she’s invited to stay with them. thus ensues wacky hijinks with their new pal, Venus Boom Boom de Milo.

I glossed over the urge to write a cumulative review of Next Mutation. Just, take my word as the target demographic of the show during the last gasps of 90s Turtlemania that TNM was a trashfire overall but... y’know... if you ever needed a palette cleanser after some grimdark or angsty TMNT content, give TNM a whirl. The slapstick was intentional and The Point in the show. Venus’ circumstances for coming was as serious as it would get.

... Also, yes, they made them not related in TNM, preteen snackugaki didn’t clock why because I watched a lot of wuxia as a kid so brotherhood is a term beyond blood ties to me (and if I’m being honest, martial brotherhood is fkkn metal) and later I heard tell that it was to lure more girls into the franchise with both a girl turtle and romance options. which idk whatevs man.

I also have to clear that, actually no, Donatello and Venus did not fight EVERY episode. Donatello, despite sprinkling a little too much barely disguised snobbery, did defer to Venus’ expertise in “the supernatural” when the situation called for it, and Venus would commend Donnie on his scientific ingenuity. They even teamed up skillsets to create surveillance drones! She essentially casted Calm Emotions on him while he tried to hack the controls of the Astro Megaship back for the In Space Rangers. They breached the divide between STEM and Humanities! They only had one “real fight" near the end of the season-- because Donnie was playing his containment breach elevator mid trash copyright strike immune proto-EDM too loud while she was trying to meditate. and that’s just being bad roommates tbh.

...christ I know it’s gonna come up too, but also NO, there was not constant advances made toward Venus during the show. At most was Mikey pulling his ol’ “I work out every day~!” schtick for like 2 episodes of the 5 spent to introduce Venus. And then after? A shipper’s desert, you’d have to dig and peer behind like 8 curtains for any viable fodder.

...OKAY NOW FOR JENNIKA’S ORIGINS: Jennika is an IDW character specifically so, naturally why she isn’t in (or would’ve been, AHEM) a lot of iterations yet (or at all, COUGH) (but to continue in honesty there’s a lot of legal tape to cut through since Jennika is IDW’s while TMNT overall is Nick’s) Introduced as a Foot Assassin, her place in the Foot Clan shifts when Splinter takes over from Shredder (Saki), eventually she forms actual bonds with both the turtles and Splinter to where it’s implied she also saw him as an important figure to her if not an outright surrogate father figure. And because TMNT is mess and drama the other 50% of the time, Karai takes over the Foot from Splinter and shenanigans compounded by Karai’s then-current machinations for the Foot-- results in Jennika getting shanked in the stomach by Karai during a clandestine meeting to resolve clan rivalry. She’s losing blood fast, Donnie works to save her and it’s Leo who volunteers for blood transfusion to keep her stable mid-transit.

SURPRISE!

Leo’s blood mutates Jennika into a mutant turtle. And then Casey ghosts/dumps her. My poor daughter. She has a real rough time of it before fully integrating with the boys. Raph falls in with Old Hob, gets hoodwinked, and now they live in Mutant Town. Jennika slowly finds herself again, as a mutant turtle, a Splinter clan ninja, a girlfriend, a guitarist in a band she started, a sister in a found family, and a constable to a very little town.

okay! we’re all marginally informed about my two wonderfull daughters, Venus and Jennika~!

so if I can indulge further, I’m going to use my cognizance and make it everyone’s problem because I have beem quietly foaming with ideas for bg lore for tactical!J&V, more bullet points!

ok so, donathan mentioned a bit about their tac! Leo and Donnie being the snipers, Mikey and Raph spotting for them while also being demolitions and heavy ordinance specialists respectively

I would think, then for Vee and Jen, they’d be classified as close quarters combat specialists, complicated extraction? compromised area? call them to clean up and clear out~

give or take “magic” being a thing used in donathan’s AU, or anyone’s AU of this AU, Vee would probably be a close combat specialist along with Jen.

Vee, I feel, would, barring a ...”tactical fan”, (even though in TNM it was just her fists and her little wizard components but her toy came with a fan so.) probably use batons, Jen in lieu of her tekagi-shuko would... most likely use tactical karambit. not that large of a leap really.

for my personal lulz, Vee and Jen are... accurate, height-wise. Raph gets to be the biggest brother since alligator snapping turtles are, in fact, the largest motherfucking freshwater turtles on the north american continent. no getting around it.

my Vee in all Rise AUs is a softshell since the messy hanzi used to write her first given name, Mei Pieh Chi (美鱉气) has the hanzi that’s most commonly translated as softshell turtle (鱉). eh ‘di wow talaga

snacku what do you mean ‘accurate’???? tl;dr female turtles are usually the larger ones in most species.

and listen, I love and I mean LOVE, how some of y’all have written the tac!boys, mwah; but god I’m a professional turtle bully. I need to see them get dunked on. for nutritional value. and if it comes to it, I will provide that food for myself. brb laughing at eventually drawing Venus just offhandedly tossing Donnie into the air to skeet shoot his ass for fun brings me the greatest joy.

they absolutely dote on Mikey, as is the natural order of things.

and even tho I stated TNM Donnie and Venus got along in the show, and depending on the existence of magic in this AU; I just really love dichotomous rivalries (in as much “science” and “magic” exist as a dichotomy, much less as “diametrically oppose” fields-- just, opposites man. i’m a simple girl with simple trope needs)

Vee’s arms (and legs) are absolutely covered in burns, scars, and missing flesh divots, just as close to swiss cheese limbs as you can be

I see a lot of “the missing rottmnt siblings are venus and jennika”

but jennika doesn’t really make sense to be one of them for me, jenny’s story is found family, she’s mutated after the other turtles and wasn’t “long lost” before she was found.

to an extent maybe, but there’s actually more options than jennika

there could also be kirby, a scrapped idea for a prospective 4th og ninja turtles movie

or mona lisa, since she hasn’t shown up yet and was originally meant to be a fifth turtle

also lita, but that one makes even less sense to me than jennika imo

slash or tokka maybe?

ok so i’m a normal amount of normal about this. absolutely.

i am also unattended and so my actions will prove why that is probably not great.

anyway, i love monikers, nom de plumes, sobriquets, y’know, pseudonyms if you will, code names even. 8D y’wanna know how I came up with them??????//?

okay okay okay, so! I will (until someone comes for me, but no one will ‘cuz y’all are cowards, I say, knowing my childhood nostalgia is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in my affection for Next Mutation but also i love camp) acknowledge and self-impose the title of Next Mutation trash lover as a disclaimer for why I’m gonna do another quick run down of Venus’ origin again. but a quick skim because a bitch is losing against her insomnia demon rn.

now, a lot of the kids know that Venus = magic, in general. however, at least to me, intentionally or not Venus was more portrayed like a daoist... ‘magician’ of sorts, but less in a real world daoist sense and more of a cultivator in the xianxia genre sort of way. granted she wears the taijitu (yin yang symbol) and literally showed the boys her box of herbal medicine (and one dessicated vampire heart lololol). and now that I mentioned all of that, I can segue into why I gave her “White Snake” as a code name-- in that I chose it after Bai Suzhen/Bai Shejing which now that my insomnia riddled mind is typing it out... my reasoning is actually pretty shallow, they both cultivate technically speaking, both work with herbal medicine and they just wanna help people. also just ‘cuz IDW has Venus wearing white now.

i noticed that while mikey raph and leo have 01 02 and 03 on their shoulders, don has a 44 on his thigh. was he not part of the initial experiments? and is that why he doesnt feel a brotherly type bond with the other three? if he is experiment 44, are there other turtles (maybe venus or jennika)?

also, don tons plastron. the metal at the top is sending me like is that from a medical experiment before he was saved by Shen or was he born deformed and that was their solution? do his bros see him as weaker because of it or do they not care?

Okay. I've been tip-toeing around this AU for a while now, but I just got caught up, and now I think I have a (decent) grasp on what's going on. So I wanna go over everything I know so far to see if I'm right or wrong on anything. Don't know if you'd be willing to correct me or not. Either way, I hope my mistakes can help you understand what to clarify to other fans like me. But, I also have some questions. You probably won't be able to answer most of them, but it's at least worth a shot.

First, where's Venus? Like, why is she not in your comics that are (sort of) separate frome the canon now story. The ones that skip to the future way after all the turtles reunite. Did she die? Did she escape? Is it because she wasn't introduced yet when you made those comics?

Two, why do you keep on making references to the future timeline? I know you're planning on possibly making your own stuff leading up to the events of the movie. It just gives me a jumpscare when I see certain...imagery in those comics. I guess you're hinting at what your version of the future apocalypse would look like, but it just hurts to see. Specifically in the comic explaining both the events and aftermath of the movie and the bad future timeline. It's starting to really confuse my brain as to where this story is headed. What's meant to be the main focus? The Hamto's reuniting? The aftermath? Or the future?

Third, did you make all those min-comics before you started the actual AU? Or did you do them during?

Fourth, are any of those mini-comics relevant to the actual story now? Or have you changed your mind on a few things? It's just that everything is so all over the place, I don't really know whether to trust if they're accurate. I know most of them are just there for funzies, but the longer ones concern me. I guess I'm just not used to the storyteller doing sequel, start, prequel, start, sequel, prequel, prequel, sequel, and then end. Or maybe it's just me, and I'm sleep deprived.

My little observation speech is gonna take a while for me to get out in your asks because when I get theoretical, my speech gets long, and my proper English goes down the drain. So I'll be back. I appreciate your work very much. Despite the pain it causes me, it's still amazing.

I’ll try my best to clear up what confusion I can!

1. As far as Venus. The answer is kind of a mix of, I was still figuring out her design and backstory while coming out with some of those early comics, and then, once I had that down, I wanted the boys to grow strong bonds as a main cast. That’s why a lot of the side characters are only making small appearances in the Sep!AU Life stories, as those are mainly for the boys reconnecting. (Usagi shows up the most because I love him and am totally biased towards him).

This maybe hasn’t been stated outright, but I wasn’t really expecting so many ppl to like Vee as much as they do, and now im trying not to spoil too much of her story. It’ll unfortunately just take us a while to get to the meat of it. Since the boys reconnecting takes up a lot of the early s1s2 story, Im trying to follow the familiar Rise blueprint of Draxum, Shredder, Krang, and then in s3 we’ll have crazy fun new stories with the extra characters.

Ive also decided to take this little nugget from one of the Q&As, and use it for Venus instead of Jennika. It was a much needed bit of inspiration to explain why Venus sorta disappears for a while and will go through some major physical changes (not yet revealed) before the family can figure out a way to reach her.

2. I’m not sure if you mean jump scared in a bad/triggering or neutral way, but if you need me to tag anything on those posts please let me know!

The glimpses of the future timeline, are being scattered throughout wherever they parallel the present story in little ways, but that’s only for now. As we get closer to the movie plot, bigger chunks of the future will be revealed, because the future versions of the boys will have a larger role to play in the present timeline. So we will need more backstory than what the canon got. And also I just enjoy drawing my future versions so sometimes I don’t think too hard on a reason. I just like throwing them at ppl with no warning or reason.

When s2 ends, I plan on collecting all the future related stuff that’s been released, and recapping it for easier reading. Right now, it’s just little sprinkles of foreshadowing to give ppl an idea that, ‘oh crap. The doomed timeline is a bummer’. In my mind, I guess i thought it’d be kinda like a fun scavenger hunt for clues, but maybe ppl don’t like that 😅

3. All of the side-stories were written as the main comic was/is being released. A lot of them resulted from asks that just spawned the need to expand on certain ideas, or a desire to give all the turtles their time to shine.

For instance, when I was doing Donnie’s section of the main comic, it was a good few months where we hardly saw anyone but him and Venus. I wanted to just mix it up, and give Raph some love with his ‘Raph Time’ short. When Leo was front and center in the main, we hardly saw the others, so Mikey and Donnie got their little ‘Secrets’ short (and it was also I fun thank you for EW making it so far in the tmnt sep competition).

4. Anything that has been reworked/revised or just plain dropped should have an ‘Edit’ note because yes—I have gone back and changed some things, but more so from the asks i got in the early days, and some movie idea drafts.

All the short comics done in the last year, especially the ones that are listed in my pinned post, are canon and fall somewhere in the timeline. They’re like supplemental reading though—extra meat to give the world and the characters more personality. They do have particular backstory plot and important info in them, but nothing that shouldn’t eventually be re-visited/repeated in the main story.

um I hope that cleared up some things! I know it’s kind of a crazy amount of lore. I’ve tried my best to organize it in the pinned post, huge timeline, and search bar tags, but I know it’s getting harder and harder for newer ppl to jump in as it just get bigger. Thanks for reading regardless!

Throughout Rise we have been shown that Raph has an interest in music, which can be seen by his tendency to exclaim ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash!’ when he is surprised which he does in the episodes Donnie’s Gifts & Newsworthy.

Raph saying ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash!’ when he is surprised is actually a reference to a Rolling Stone’s song

Raph: Jumpin’ Jack Flash!

Another example of Raph’s interest in music that I have seen some people point out is the fact that Raph seems to keep what looks like vinyl records in his room which can be seen in the episode The Purple Game.

But one of the possibly earliest examples of Raph showing his love for music is the fact that Raph gave his family music code names.

Raph: Purple Rain, do you see the target?

Similar to how Donnie was shown to give his family Chess Code Names in the episode Mind Meld, in the first episode of Rise & in the episode Bullhop, Raph gave himself, April & Donnie the code names Red Rover, Yellow Submarine & Purple Rain respectively which are all song titles.

The fact that Raph gave himself, April & Donnie code names based off of song titles might mean that Raph has given his whole family code names based off of song titles, though we don’t really get to hear the code names Raph gave Leo & Mikey.

Though some possible code names that I have heard for Leo within the fandom that fit Raph’s code naming style are Mr. Blue Sky or Blue Monday. Though something that I have thought of is a possible code name for Jennika.

One of the plans for season 3 of Rise was that it was supposed to be revealed that the Turtles had two missing siblings, this had apparently been planned since the beginning of Rise with the two extra mutation chambers briefly being seen in the episode The Evil League of Mutants.

Though we don’t know much about the two missing siblings (other than the fact that Big Mama’s Assistant is apparently one of them) many people believe they are the Rise version’s of Venus & Jennika.

Considering that Jennika’s mask colour is yellow (due to the fact that it is meant to resemble her hair from when she was human) Jennika’s song title code name would most likely be a song with the word ‘yellow’ in it & I song that I think might fit is the song ‘Yellow Brick Road’, I know the full song title is ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ but I kind of think shortening the song title would still kind of get the reference across.

How would Leo react if the kids tried to kill him? Depending on the timeline there would be different reasons for it. The “adopted” ones would probably be afraid that he would hurt them like he hurts Usagi. With Inago, he would maybe do it to protect his father from being hurt even if it’s his dad doing it. Before you say what I know you’re going to say, there’s a thing you need to think about: Kids aren’t stupid! They notice things especially when they grow older!

I never once considered any of the kids stupid, they are all extremely capable and intelligent in their own ways <3

Leo wouldn't mind at all if his kids tried to kill him, he'd find it charming and cute. Almost like play fighting, but deadlier and with sharp objects. Typical addams family moment.

While the kids are are all smart, the difference is their knowledge between right and wrong.

For example, both Jennika and Inago have only ever KNOWN how the Hamatos act. They'd grow up thinking that is the norm and okay, and find nothing wrong with Leo's treatment of Usagi (for Inago specifically, he acts very similar to Leo around Usagi, because that's how he learned LOVE is shown. He'd find no problem w/ Leo's actions.)

For Gabe and Venus, the older and more world aware ones, there's different reasons neither would act out.

For Gabe, especially after the boiling oil accident, he's convinced that it wasn't Usagi's fault, and that Usagi actually cares for and loves him dearly. This warps his opinion of Usagi and how he views love, and he wouldn't ever feel in danger around Leo because of it.

Venus has behavior issues because he was originally in foster care before being kidnapped. These behavior issues are only encouraged and increased by being with the Hamatos, but they find it freeing and more loving then the places they grew up in. And, if anything, they were likely fostered in homes that DID have couples fighting often, so she would find nothing new/surprising/weird in how Leo acts w/ Usagi.

Leo is extremely caring towards his family, and wouldn't ever imagine hurting any of his kids. He's protective and coddles them quite a bit, but all the kids are aware he'd protect them with everything he has. The kids should honestly be more afraid of leaving (getting stuck and dying in the lair hallways), or of Usagi (Gabe knows what's up)

Things I’m hoping we’ll get to see in Tales of the TMNT (the new Mutant Mayhem show):

Warning: Spoilers for Mutant Mayhem

The Turtles characters and personalities explored more (I feel the movie didn’t give them much of a chance to really express their individual personalities)

Show more of Donnie’s science/tech nerd side instead of just making him the video games and anime nerd stereotype.

I’m kinda hoping we get to see more of Raph’s personality outside of “the athlete” and being obsess with fighting. Like does he have any other hobbies besides sports and beating people up??

CASEY JONES!!! Where’s my hockey son??! I miss him!! Bring him back!!

Maybe some April x Casey? It be nice to have a good April and Casey romance for once. Sorry Leo but I don’t see you and April becoming an official thing

If April and Leo don’t work out I hope he gets a new love interest who genuinely likes him back romantically *cough* Lotus Blossom *cough*

Speaking of mutants, I hope we get to see more mutant characters like Slash, Venus, Jennika, Rahzar, Tokka, etc.

Splinter’s backstory explored more? I know MM says he’s just a regular NYC sewer rat, but I feel there’s more to his backstory that we just don’t know yet.

Explore Splinter and April’s dynamic and friendship maybe?

I’m not convinced Baxter Stockman is dead. No way they killed him off that early in the movie. Theres probably gonna be a plot twist that he’s alive somewhere as a brain in a jar.

Probably a massive jump but I’d like to see MM’s take on Renet. I really like her character and I think she’d be a great addition to the cast.

Maybe Karai?? We know Shredder is coming so them meeting Karai could be a good way to start bringing in the Foot Clan into the story. She could be a student going to their school who’s undercover secretly getting info for Shredder. Also maybe instead of April x Casey they do April x Karai 👀
