They’re essentially a much more palatable version of PETA. Their methods and demands are a lot less extreme, but the end goals are the same— no zoos, no farms, no breeding, etc.

Another big issue is their misappropriation of funds. Despite their name, they’re not actually a “humane society”—they don’t operate a single shelter and are not affiliated with any local humane societies. People donate after watching those sad commercials thinking their money is going to the shelter down the street, when in reality it's mainly spent on lobbying, advertising, and paying their executives.

The way Percy talks about himself in the show though, having ADHD and dyslexia, saying he knows that something is wrong with his brain, it’s heartbreaking.

Because stepping aside from the magic and monsters, this is a kid who’s internalized the ableist messages and bullying that’s been directed at him. He believes that having ADHD and dyslexia means that something is broken in his head. Not that his experience is natural, another one of the many different ways that people go through the world, but that his difficulties mean his brain is broken, and by extension, he is innately wrong.

It’s this out loud recognition of the struggling quiet part of someone with a learning disability, who can’t figure out what is going on with themself. They don’t know why they are the way they are, they don’t know how to manage it, and they certainly haven’t accepted it as a part of them, trying to fit into the expectations of a neurotypical society. All they know is that according to everyone else, they’re ‘wrong’. So they must just be ‘wrong’.

i'm so new to murderbot fandom that i feel like i don't get an opinion on the show casting, but i do think a lot about that post that points out that "the two construct genders are, effectively, 'cop' and 'prostitute'"... and there is a part of me that thinks that, in a visual medium, it would be harder to get the idea of what it means to Be Assigned SecUnit across if murderbot didn't present masc and white.

i wouldn't call mbd copaganda and i wouldn't say that casting a nonbinary actor of color is the same as going "look at how diverse our fictional cops are," but at the same time, i feel that these are coded aspects of being a secunit, which may be invisible on the page, but would matter more in a tv adaptation. does that make sense?

i think theres smth to be said for prioritization of freedom and variance and play having a really high correlation to like, average happiness of a civilization. like i think you could describe a really solid theory of everything that hinges upon trickster-ness, variation of body and mind, and space for art and play that would really effectively describe most ideal past systems and the most ideal future. im thinking about gay spirit's emphasis on the trickster-god-ness of queerness & of the sacred duty of fun and whimsy, of humans being essentially very neotenous apes (babylike, with play being a neotenous trait!), of the history of play always preceeding invention, of dawn of everything's emphasis on acceptance of neurodiversity and openness to new modes of organization in free societies, and of fascism's focus on IN-tolerance of bodily diversity. i think that humans as a species essentially are designed to have as much variation present as possible and that's how we've been successful: not despite variation but because of it. when the cold times come and everyone dies save for the fat people in your band, they still have some thin children -- because the variation is essential! gay people are often spoken of as evolutionary """"dead ends"""" because they are not thought of as reproducing -- and yet they have been a constant! disabled and neurodivergent people continually occur across human history * because * we are good to have around, and that utility is not work, it is also play and fun and fresh ideas and shapes and ways of being. our species has been shaped by natural selection to continually produce more variation in our population, because variation and fun and play are what enable us to survive and thrive.
