Dumps some of my favorite hurt/comfort/whump things here

Hiding injuries my beloved

"I like wearing baggy clothes." They in fact do not, they just have the mother of all bandages to hide

Whumpee insisting they're ok, followed immediately by them collapsing like a sack of potatoes.

Bonus points if caretaker saw this coming from a mile away

"*while patching them up* I told you so." "SHUT."

Bonus Bonus points if caretaker didn't see this coming and is freaking out because holy shit did whumpee just up and die oh god--

Caretakers that are just So Done with this shit. They very clearly care but they are going to comPLAIN ABOUT IT.

Whumpee and Caretaker sassing at each other as Caretaker patches them up. That's how they both know its going to be ok.

Which makes it all the more worrying when either one of them aren't doing that.

Defiant whumpees

Cocky little bastard that doesn't know when to shut up even after getting decked in the face

Their defiance being out of pure spite because they refuse to give whumper the satisfaction of breaking

Their defiance being a defense mechanism when in reality they're Not Doing So Hot

Defiant whumpee having a moment of finally breaking and trying desperately to put themselves back together and failing

Attempted self first-aid that you know for a fact is not helping.

Whumpee being hopped up oh pain meds while in the hospital.

Whumpee with a cast that they're still getting used to and they occasionally smack it off of something, followed by instant regret and maybe tears.

Angry Caretakers that are actually very soft

Caretaker being So Fucking Mad that whumpee got hurt to this degree

Bonus points if whumpee thinks they're mad at them at first

Bonus Bonus points if Caretaker realized this and immediately goes to comfort them and reassure them.

Big Scary is whumpee and Tiny Sweet is caretaker.

Caretaker also getting hurt rescuing whumpee.

Touch-starved whumpee who doesn’t know how to ask for comfort

- Whumpee who grows up being denied or ridiculed for their need of affection. Eventually, Whumpee learn to just stop asking because they will never get what they want and will most likely be punished for daring to ask.

- Whumpee who are wary of being open or vulnerable to their teammates because their guardians or the people they grow up with see vulnerability as a weakness. Whumpee has been so conditioned that they are not allowed to ask for comfort so they just close off and deal with it themself. And their teammates don’t know they are truly struggling because they have learned to conceal it so well.

- Whumpee who is taught to not be “selfish” (read: to not ask for anything), so they just don’t ask because they don’t want to bother their teammates.

- Whumpee who takes on the role of a caretaker and put their own needs for comfort aside so they can listen to teammate A’s family issues or be the big spoon because teammate B likes to be the small spoon. They see their touch starvation as something trivial themselves, because their teammates need their touch more and Whumpee can handle themself.

- Whumpee who just melts into someone embrace, soaking up all they can get. Whumpee who hides their disappointment and the feeling of emptiness when the arms inevitably let go and they are alone again.

- Whumpee who is too shy to ask, and is a bit closed off and by themself that people think they don’t like to be touch.

- Whumpee who is very selective about whose touch they want, but has to take any physical comfort they can get because they don’t have any other option.

"Is everything okay, Caretaker?" Whumpee asked, concern etched on their face.

Caretaker grunted and rolled over, turning their back to Whumpee. "I'm fine. Just tired."

Whumpee frowned, feeling hurt by Caretaker's sudden coldness. "Did I do something wrong?"

"No," Caretaker snapped. "Just leave me alone."

"But-" Whumpee said softly, reaching out to touch Caretaker's shoulder.

Caretaker shrugged them off and sat up, glaring at Whumpee. "I said leave me alone. Can't you see I'm trying to sleep?"

I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.

And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.

Caretaker who has always put others' need in front of their own, to the point that their teammates/Whumpees don't even consider that they have feelings and can feel hurt and sad anymore.

Caretaker who says they are fine and keeps a brave face in front of everyone, but late at night, when they are alone, they break down crying because how scared and worried they are about their Whumpees. They are also worried for themself, but they force themself not to think about it.

Character whose superpower is affected by their emotions. They have been trained not to feel strong emotions and to repress how they feel, but eventually they break down and their power goes haywire. Afterward, they feel guilty for hurting people. Maybe their power has even been nullified and they are left feeling empty.
