Carlos Sainz x Supermodel!Reader- Relationship Headcannons
Tumblr media
My Carlos is one of my favourites so I had to make this 🥰
Warnings: None (I don’t think, let me know if you find any)
• You and Carlos are Ferrari’s golden couple. You’ve been together several years, since his time at Renault.
• You have a chilli necklace that was a gift from Carlos for your one year anniversary which you almost always wear.
• You speak English and Spanish natively and also Italian so fit right in as a Ferrari WAG along with Charlotte who is like your sister. If Charles and Carlos think they spend a lot of time together then you and Charlotte must be almost chained to each other.
• Alexandra is lovely too, you haven’t known her very long but you both get along well.
• You’re a supermodel with designer and high-street brands like Alaïa, Prada, Paige, Zara and Alexander McQueen but since Carlos began racing for Ferrari, you were signed for Ferrari Style, Puma and Ray Ban so you often are at the same events for work.
• Carlos attends all your Ferrari Style shows. He’s on the front row anyway because he’s a Ferrari driver but he’d still be there if he wasn’t anyway.
• Whenever you want to tease Carlos, you call him Carlitos which makes him blush like mad.
• You are very good at padel, as good as Carlos. Often, you have doubles matches with Charles and Charlotte. It’s either couple vs couple or boys vs girls which is often a challenge of who can tease the other more.
• While being excellent at padel, you are bad at golf.
• In the several years Carlos and you have been a couple, you have gone from being absolutely awful at golf to being poor at it.
• Quite often you simply play golf with Carlos to tease him with the short skirts.
• Rupert and you get on great too, if you’re away for a race and Carlos and him are training you’ll often join Team 55 to get some exercise and also to tease Carlos with Rupert.
• You’re Guzmán’s favourite background character in the DONTBLINK episodes. You think you’re being sneaky but the fans always find you in the background.
• You’re a private couple. Private but not a secret. Everyone on the grid knows you’re a couple.
• You may be a private couple but your phone is full of Carlos Memes from Instagram and Twitter.
• Piñon is Carlos’ and your baby. You love Mati and Oli too but Piñon is your child.
• Carlos, you and Lando are like a child and their parents. It started in McLaren but you’re still close even though Carlos is now at Ferrari
• Your camera roll is 50% Carlos photos and 50% Piñon photos. It’s hard being a dog mum ok.
• You’ve gained a few of your own fans at the races, some who like your style such results in Instagram pages documenting looks you’re seen wearing.
• You have dozens of Carlos/Ferrari bracelets which fans give you.
• You cried with happiness at Silverstone 2022. Carlos deserved the win and you were overjoyed to be able to see him finally achieve it first-hand.
• All the emotions peak in Singapore 2023 when Carlos gains his second win. It’s been such a hard season for both Ferrari boys. Carlos has worked so hard and he can finally reap the reward of his hard work.
• He gazes at you from the top step of the podium as you gaze back up at him with tears of joy in your eyes.
• Charles teases you and Carlos about what goes down in his driver’s room before the races. You both always tell him he’s got no proof. 😉
• The Sainz family love you. Blanca and Ana are like your sisters. Carlos and Reyes are lovely and treat you like one of their daughters. Caco is like your big brother and you both team up to tease poor ‘Carlitos’
• At both Ana and Blanca’s wedding, Carlos’ family members and family friends are asking when you will marry. They point out he’s the last Sainz sibling that isn’t married.
• ‘Sois una pareja preciosa y estáis bien preparados’ his family repeat.
• At both Ana and Blanca’s weddings, both bouquets were given to you by the brides.
• You think you’re too young at the moment to marry. Carlos thinks otherwise.
• ‘I have an engagement ring querida’ he tells you as you slow dance at Blanca’s wedding after-party. ‘I will ask you to marry me soon. All these weddings have made me want to settle down’
• Since the first summer of you and Carlos being a couple, you’ve gone to Mallorca with the Sainzs.
• Lying on a yacht in Mallorca or drinking gazpacho with Carlos’ family has become one of your favourite parts of the summer break.
• You always end up going on a girls trip with Blanca and Ana around Mallorca before returning to show Carlos, Guillermo and Rodrigo what you’ve bought.
• Every year, you go on a night time boat ride with Carlos which is one of the many highlights of the trip.
• You thought that England was your home when Carlos was at Renault and McLaren but now you realise that Italy is your favourite. The food, the people and the weather is everything.
Carlos’ carbonara is incredible. You’re both foodies so date night often becomes one of you cooking, or going out for a meal to one of your favourite Italian restaurants.
• Carlos and you are everything to each other and neither of you can see your lives without each other.

LITTLE LION
Tumblr media
Summary: when you became a single mom a few years ago who knew you would find love again in the form of a red bull driver
Pairing: max verstappen x reader
Warnings: teen pregnancy
Word Count: 1268
Tumblr media
Being a single mother at an age as young as 19 had changed your life plans a lot in the nine months you were carrying your baby. When your asshole ex-boyfriend dumped you a few months before giving birth, your life seemed to fall from grace at that very moment. When your baby was born, even with the help of your parents you didn't want to stop taking care of him yourself, so you put your studies on hold to dedicate as much as you could to your little boy. But when you saw that the expenses of a baby were greater than you thought and you did not want to abuse your parents' hospitality, you started looking for a job that would allow you to cover the necessary economic expenses and be able to continue raising your child. After a few months of searching and several resumes and rejections, the sky opened when Red Bull, the famous Formula 1 team offered you a job as one of their marketing staff.
That was three years ago, and you couldn't be more grateful to the whole team and what they had done for you. Even with all the comments that were made about them many times and even though there were certain people among them that you thought were horrible, you felt proud to be part of something like that and the family you had found working there. At first it was difficult for you to adapt since traveling with such a small child was complicated, but over time you and Noah, your son, got used to the hustle and bustle of race weeks, your son ended up falling in love with the sport by practically growing up in it. The mechanics and other members of the team loved seeing your three year old running around the garages and even Christian Horner had developed a soft spot for the young red bull fan and his mother, being quite permissive with the two of you.
But the real person who had developed a soft spot for you and your son had been Red Bull's golden boy, Max Verstappen. You two had met when Max joined the team as their driver the same year that you joined them to work there. And being the two rookies in that world you found comfort in each other, and when Max met your son, he fell in love with him just as quickly as his mother. During the three years that you had known each other, you had ended up behaving like a small family, although you had not yet labeled your relationship, Max was already a father to your son, taking care of him with you or when you were not available, always delighted to have little Noah in his arms, and the feeling seemed to be mutual as your boy was always loving to snuggle up in the Dutchman's arms.
It was race weekend and you were arriving at the Red Bull garage looking for your son, who you assumed that since he was not by your side he would be glued to Max while he was taking care of things related to the car. When you arrived, you spotted Daniel dressed in his Renault jumpsuit swarming around the Paddock. You smiled when he approached you.
"Well, if it's not the future Mrs. Verstappen" ever since Daniel had been at Red Bull while you were working with them, he had kept that joke going when he saw you and Max.
“I am looking for Max and his little shadow. Have you seen them by any chance?” You asked him ignoring how he called you.
“I just talked to him and the little lion recently. Max took him because he had to talk about something with his engineer, I guess they'll be inside the garage now” the nickname that came out of his mouth made you smile gracefully and raise an eyebrow.
"Little lion?" you questioned
“Yes, little lion, you know, Max is like a lion so since his son is like his shadow and looks like him, he is the little lion. The rest of the drivers say it too. I think I even heard Horner call him that once” he explained. You felt a tingling and loving feeling when Daniel referred to Noah as Max's son and not just yours. And you'd be lying if you said you didn't love the nickname.
"Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to look for the two lions to see what they're doing." You smiled for the last time at Daniel, who smiled back at you before each one went their own way.
As you walked into the Red Bull garage waving at some mechanics, you came to where you had visualized Max looking at something on the screens with his engineer. The sight before you melted your heart a little more than usual. Max stood with his eyes on the graphics on the screen as he nodded to what the man next to him was saying, but every now and then he moved his head to stare at the sleeping little boy in his arms. Your son seemed so comfortable with his head nestled in Max's neck that you were almost envious. After observing your boys in silence you finally approached them, when Max's engineer saw you he smiled at Max and you and then with a greeting he left to leave the little family alone. Max turned in your direction smiling softly when he had you in front of him. Without sudden movements so as not to wake up Noah, you stood on tiptoe with one hand on the back of Max neck to kiss him briefly. Max removed an arm from around Noah to wrap around your shoulders in his place and pull yourself closer to his chest.
"You know, Daniel said something to me coming here" you commented after the moment of peace as you both watched Noah sleep soundly.
"What did that idiot say now?" Max snorted thinking of everything that could have come out of Daniel Ricciardo's mouth.
“It has not been anything bad, in fact it has been pretty nice. He has said that some of the drivers and some people in the paddock have nicknamed Noah the little lion. He says that it is because you are a lion and he is your son and your little shadow” you told him what he had told you. "He has also called me future Mrs. Verstappen "
"And what do you think of both things?" Max asked you a little doubtful of your opinion regarding his place in your life.
“The little lion thing seemed adorable to me. Being your son, it's only fair that he receive a nickname similar to his father” you knew that Max was smiling when he kissed the crown of your head after hearing how you called Noah his son. "Mrs. Verstappen remains to be seen. I haven't seen any ring yet” you mocked him.
Max laughed at your last sentence.
"I can fix that soon, Schatz." He kissed your head one more time before you both hugged each other tighter than before.
The scene you gave was that of a beautiful family with a long future ahead of them. Everyone who passed smiled at the image of the Red Bull driver hugging the two most important people in his life in his arms. Anyone could see the love radiating from the three of you while you were in your little bubble of love and euphoria at the future that awaited you together.

A different anon but as someone deeply fascinated by Esteban Ocon and the redbull musical chairs here are some extra notes:
Estie bestie is currently at Alpine formerly Renault since 2020. And back in 2018 (ie when he was in Racing Point) there were rumors linking him to the Renault seat Daniel would take in 2019 so that’s possibly why his and Lances friendship survived
Unrelated but Alpine/Renault is currently the Frenchest team to ever French. It is (or at least was) partly owned by the French government through their stake in Renault (Alpine got renamed cause Alpine is the sports car brand of Renault. Not that they make any sports cars I believe they made maybe one in 2017). The current two Alpine drivers are the aforementioned Estie bestie and Pierre Gasly (both French. Also childhood friends to enemies to they have to tolerate each other now) and while their current reserve driver is an Australian, he will hopefully for his own good take a page out of his countryman’s Oscar Piastris book and hightail it out of there for his own good. The most likely replacement for him would be Victor Martins. Also French. The Alpine factories are in Enstone (UK) and Viry (France) so that’s the least French part of that team
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming of rbr 2nd seat:
So rbr started by buying the Jaguar team in mid 2000s after afaik getting fed up by Sauber who they used to sponsor. Also at that time Sauber was sponsored by Petronas, Mercedes’ current title sponsor. Fun fact
The two drivers that they started with was David Coulthard who no one cares about in this story and Mark Webber, Australian, first victim of rbr 2nd seat shenanigans
At some point (for the 2009 season I think?) Seb Vettel, German, certifiable little shit at that time, replaces Coulthard
Insert a highlight reel of Seb Vettels warcrimes between ~2010 - 2013, which culminate in Multi-21 Mark Webber retiring after the 2013 season. He gets replaced by Toro Rosso driver/Red Bull junior Daniel Ricciardo, Australian, happy go lucky guy and our next victim in a couple of years
2014 brings new regs for the cars and Red Bull struggles to adapt. For context Seb went from a 9 win streak at the end of 2013 to no podiums in 2014. Yeah. So he runs away to Ferrari for 2015 to become a victim of Italian incompetence instead
He gets replaced by Daniil Kvyat, Russian, the most forgettable man in this story. Also he is pretty new into F1, it’s his second or third year there
2015 is sorta meh for rbr but the two Daniels are sorta even. And then 2016 happens
Here’s the thing; Daniil decides to play bumper cars in Russia and China right off the bat at the beginning of the season, one of the victims being former rbr golden child Seb. Now there’s more lore that I don’t remember but it culminates in him being replaced for Spain 2016 by Max Verstappen, Dutch, aged like 18 at that time
Max goes on to win his first race with Red Bull because Mercedes (the best team on the grid) is in the throes of a civil war and their drivers take each other out. There could be novels written about those two drivers btw
The next two and half years are a slow process of the garage slowly going from preferring Danny Ric to preferring Max. Highlights include Baku 2018 and then Dans redemption win in Monaco the same year. There could be novels about this as well but we culminate in Dan leaving for Renault
And then we get to the real musical chairs. He gets replaced by Pierre Gasly, French, third victim of rbr 2nd seat
He has a shite start to the season and ends up getting replaced by Alex Albon, Thai, a rookie that year, midway through the season after Christian Horner, Mr Ginger spice, swore up and down he won’t
Intermission: Toro Rosso liked playing musical chairs as well and Pierre Gasly only got an F1 seat at the last few races for 2017, Alex got told he’s racing in 2019 (his first season) days before preseason testing. With no experience in an F1 car. And there’s a world of difference between a shit car (Toro Rosso) and a good car (Red Bull). Yeah they were ultimately victims of rbrs shitty management, especially Alex since he does wonders in a Williams now
Rbr decides to drop Alex after 2020. Except they usually promote Toro Rosso drivers and the two Toro Rosso drivers right now? Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat. Yeah
So they end up hiring Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, Mexican, who knows if he will be racing next year. Idk if he got an extension or if they hired him for four years, either way his contract is supposed to last until end of 2024 season but right now how Mr Ginger spice is acting… yeah
Also, Daniel just came back to rbr as a driver for Alpha Tauri (former Toro Rosso) after a mid season swap that was widely regarded as shittily done so there are very little contract issues that would stop Red Bull from hiring him, a marketing departments golden boy, a good friend of Max, as the second driver to maybe finally have a good team
(Red Bull has never ended 1-2 in drivers standings. Checo is currently second but Sir Lewis Hamilton can do wonders sometimes)
So to reiterate the seat movements:
It’s Webber -> Ricciardo -> Gasly -> Albon -> Perez in that metaphorical seat which when rb had a clear first and second drivers it was usually second drivers seat
And (Coulthard ->) Vettel -> Kvyat -> Verstappen for that other seat. The one that if rb had a clear first and second drivers was usually first (Vettel, Verstappen after ~2018)
Bonus fun fact about Liam Lawson, one of the threats for Checos seat:
He is born in 2002. He’s younger than Fernando Alonso’s career by several months, upwards to a year
He is the guy that knocked Verstappen out of quali in Q2 in Singapore and consequently broke the several year long streak of at least one car always in Q3 that Red Bull has been holding
There is always a debate if he has a guaranteed seat from rbr or not at some point. There were rumors of a guaranteed for 2025 a while ago but who knows…
Sorry for rambling so much I have thoughts haha
forgot i’ve been sitting on this ask for a month lol but yes. red bull second seat drama is indeed fascinating. and now there is aparently another rumor that arthur leclerc might come up to f1 through racing bulls (alpha tauri) which would disrupt the process again.

This is gonna be a very long post and I'm sorry for it.
The reason why so many people are comfortable talking like this about Daniel is because of Zac, Andrea, Jenson, and all the 'big names' that openly and harshly criticized Daniel.
The moment Zac started trash talking Daniel in front of the media he opened the door to the nasty and jealous assholes to follow in his steps.
You don't hear anybody from Alfa Romeo taking about Bottas the way Zac talked about Daniel, I don't remember anybody from Alpine trash talking Fernando every time he DNFed, and he did a lot, or when he refused to do PR or him not being able to win even though he's a 2 time world champion.
Nobody is criticizing Nico because no one at Haas said a word about his performance.
It all started with Zac and Andrea, after that the boundaries that exist between criticizing a driver for not being good and publicly harassing and insulting a human being that you don't know we're broken.
I'm a huge DR3 fan and I can admit that Daniel didn't perform as expected while he was at McLaren but to put the blame solely on him is ridiculous for the simple fact that if he was the problem McLaren now would've been fighting for 4th in the championship not for p17. They've been having problems since Jenson and Fernando, then they had one ray of hope when Carlos got his first podium with them and thought that they are now back at being the historical team they once were completely ignoring that they need to rebuild the whole team from scratch, and instead they laid all of theirs and their fans unrealistic expectations on Daniel, who just drove for Renault and put them higher in that season's championship.
Daniel become then the face of the team, promises were made by Zac and Andrea but instead of backing him up and giving him a car that fitted his style to give him a chance to show his abilities they fucked him up.
One thing that Daniel is and will always be known for is his late breaking yet his car at McLaren not only was not adequate but it penalised him every time he broke later making him go slower. So people started saying 'oh Daniel Ricciardo is exposed because he can't adapt to a new car' but how can someone change their entire composition, mentality and a decade of knowledge on how to drive fast cars that are able to win 7 Grand Prix and multiple podiums? Isn't it the job of a team to follow the style of their drivers? Yes drivers have to adapt but to demand a full 180 from someone because you're not arsed to changes is delusional.
So in conclusion is not that people have more faith in Nico and believe that he's somehow better than Daniel is that so far no one from Haas have yet giving them a reason or the permission to criticise him.
I hope this makes sense and apologize for any mistakes but English isn't my first language.
OMG Thankyou for this. This explains everything so well. You put everything into words I couldn’t come up with.
The whole braking thing at Mclaren is still an issue to this day so it’s clear they didn’t take any feedback Daniel gave them into action. They just blamed it all on him. Who are they going to blame this season? They’re not going to blame the golden child and they can’t blame a rookie. It has to fall on management.

On the talk of Toto, drivers who lost their seat and his William golden boys.
Because out of the five Mercedes driver, 3 of them were originally Williams boys; Nico, Valtteri and George. As soon as Valtteri gets promoted to full time driver, Toto moves up to Mercedes.
Nico retires, Toto: I MUST have Valtteri, give Williams a discount on the engine.
What I find hilarious is how many times he’s crossed path with Nico Hulkenberg. Nico lost his Williams reserve driver role to Valtteri, while Toto was on the board.
Then Nico looses his seat at Renault, because Toto hustled Esteban there.
Honorary mention that “everyone” said Esteban would get Valtteri’s seat in 2019, but didn’t
Hulkenberg is a skilled driver, so much experience, used to drive for Williams, has been a reserve driver, lost his seat, been the Covid super sub. Technically he ticks all the boxes for Toto. But every time Toto goes Naaah, no thank you. He has a type, and it is NOT Nico Hulkenberg.
I will admit that his lack of podiums might factor in, but shhhh. It’s funny so facts don’t matter
Honestly, kinda hilarious consequences aside, Nico Hulkenberg has suffered more than most from bad luck, bad timing and being on the wrong end of seat politics. And whilst he might not have had it in a single big style incident like Kevin Magnussen, it’s just the constant stream of it that’s fucked him over.
Further to that, Valtteri has mentioned in the interview where he talked about his eating/exercise disorder that Hulk specifically lost out on a seat at Williams (probably to replace Valtteri) because he was too big. David Coulthard, also notably tall, has talked about his experience of bulimia too. The driver weight regulations of the were no joke and are probably still a factor even now, though less so and downplayed.
Hulk is a big guy - and though I believe that Esteban and possibly Alex are taller than him now, Esteban certainly carries weight very differently to him. Most of the tall drivers since the 1990s have been very skinny to compensate for their height. If we look at the standard build of the grid, the “ideal” body shape for an F1 driver seems to be a kind of muscular jockey build. That’s short, lithe, especially in the hips and waist, with narrower shoulders than most men, and most of all lightweight. They fucking weigh the drivers after the race, and whilst I understand that it’s to calculate fuel allowance, that’s got to be demoralising, potentially nerve-wracking for drivers worried about their weight, and contributes to normalising unacceptable attitudes towards drivers’ bodies by teams.
The drivers that deviate from this build are routinely criticised and made a mockery of for their shapes. Like I know we like to make jokes about “slutty little waists” but think about what we do when we isolate body parts on particular drivers to turn into memes. I’m talking about Daniel’s “child bearing hips” (for which he was berated at McLaren), Valtteri being thick in the waist, Red Bull leaving so little room for Mark Webber’s shoulders that he often needed help getting out of the car. Like if you take twenty of the most talented racers in the world and create vehicles with such little allowance for their bodies that they have to run themselves in starvation mode to succeed, how can we criticise them for driving sub-optimally? And part of that is that they treat drivers who haven’t won a world championship like replaceable parts. If they don’t deliver? No problem, they can change them out?
It would be interesting to see what would happen in a world where there were (barring exceptional circumstances) mandatory driver retention periods. Many drivers never have the benefit of the car being tailored to them and are expected to alter themselves in order to make it drivable, which is really putting the cart before the horse.

— Tamino for Libération, 2018 (x) (Original French text)
Tamino, Amir do you hear...
Still unknown last year, the young Belgian singer of Egyptian origin wants to be circumspect in the face of the announced success.
by Gilles Renault, photo Marleen Daniels for “Liberation”published on October 26, 2018 at 5:06 p.m.(updated at 6:10 p.m.)
To well-born souls, value not waiting for the number of years, here comes another Belgian kid knocking at the door of musical fame. The Walloon Infanta Angèle, barely hatched in the light song department for children, likely to titillate the grown-ups, makes way for Tamino, 22, an indifferently Flemish - and mixed-blood - replica of a strong magnitude within an industry in perpetual quest for fresh flesh.
As recently as last year, the three syllables only referred to the Oriental Prince of The Magic Flute, a Mozartian hero pursued by a snake and saved by the Queen of the Night who, in return, commissions him to fly to the aid of her daughter. However, by the grace of the nickname connoted, the obliging ephebe becomes, in 2018, one of the most serious hopes of the European pop scene, ready to capsize the choirs.
A hundred and eighty-eight centimeters of haughty youth, swaddled in an endless black sweater (and unwearable, for a quidam) branded Ann Demeulemeester, matching the flagrant charm of a dark romanticism à la Louis Garrel, Amir Moharam Fouad wears handsome with his left ear ring. But does not seem to make much of it, in the art-deco house surrounded by greenery of the maternal grandparents, where he gives audience on his land, in Antwerp, a few days before the international release of a much awaited first album "based on a harmonious blend of oppositions, hot - cold, bright - dark, western - eastern…”.
Indeed, for months in Belgium first, then in France and elsewhere, all the halls and festivals (Printemps de Bourges, Rock en Seine, Montreux) have been rolling out the red carpet in front of the steep romanticism of the precocious English-speaking prodigy. Germinated in the spring, a song, Habibi, was enough to raise the temperature, an embrocation steeped in spleen, climbing so cheerfully in the treble that it revived this flame once fanned by the late Jeff Buckley - to stick to a filiation which he cannot escape. Since then, the fever has not gone down.
Sitting on a big gym ball behind the grandfather's desk, the neo-crooner deceives it without hesitation, while taking care to maintain the private sphere within a security perimeter: it will be necessary to be satisfied with the minimum service - "a girlfriend, for a long time" - in the taste buds department. Just as the hypothesis of a meeting at home was politely dismissed, on the grounds that the Antwerp apartment into which he moved a year ago hardly represents him, fault, already caught up in the whirlwind of concerts and the recording of the disc, to have had time to open all the boxes.
Conversely, Tamino rightly feels at home in the home of Lucas and “Nonna” Gerda, affectionate ancestors who still brood over the infant whose sleepless hours were brushed with Mozart. The little boy who “transformed the living room into a place of theatrical performance”. The child "often in his bubble who, eager for reading, promised to one day transform into films the stories that captivated him". Then the teenager who, having no Christmas present to offer his grandmother, "went to her room for an hour, writing her a song at a moment's notice" - whose framed manuscript is now hanging on the wall.
Going back in the annals, we come across another Moharam Fouad who, on stage, once caused syncope. Adored actor and prolific singer (his track record counts 900 tunes), the roucouleur who died in 2002 was one of the Egyptian figures of the golden age of Arabic song, in the 60s and 70s. Dogs don't make cats; Tamino has a deep respect for his paternal grandfather, whose guitar he now uses like a talisman; while specifying to have been especially marked, child, by the melodic unction of John Lennon, or the considerations on the life, the love and the friendship of the Prophet, of the Lebanese author Khalil Gibran.
“If I have a role to play today, it's that of a unifier through my music. A large part of the evils that overwhelm our society comes from the ignorance that generates these prejudices fueling rejection and racism", extrapolates the "citizen of the world", not stingy with clichés for which he apologizes, while praising a spirituality kindly abstruse, based on a transcendence that defies monotheisms.
Growing up in a land where the Vlaams Belang - the Flemish far-right party - is fanning the embers of intolerance, Tamino - who, due to his young age, won't vote for the first time in his life until next year , to the municipal ones - prefers to appeal to the weighting. “Certainly, with my head and my name, I know that in the event of a random identity check, in a crowd, it will undoubtedly fall on me. But to be frank, I must admit that I have never had to suffer from discrimination for all that”, assures the ephebe, born of a Belgian mother, anthropologist, and an Egyptian father working today in events, who separate when he is just 3 years old - and his little brother has just been born (two half-brothers will follow, one on each side).
Retaining the "friendliness and open-mindedness" of the first, and the "humor" of the second - a moment lost sight of and today requalified as an excellent "friend" - Tamino assures, as far as he remembers, always wanting to be an artist. Even though the study of languages and behavioral sciences do not leave the high school student indifferent, music is indeed very quickly imposed on his eyes - and his ears - as the "most natural way of expressing himself". The shyness overcome at the conservatory of Amsterdam, where he will perfect his scales at the age of 17, Tamino nevertheless continues to appreciate this loneliness which, in the past, encouraged him to "stay two hours hidden reading under the desk of the grandfather". Or to take refuge in phantasmagoria, at this age when, ordinarily, boys seriously begin to stare at girls.
"Still today, isolation is not displeasing to me, and I know very well how to adapt to silence", certifies the seed of star, whose sincerity does not seem subject to caution. Without this preventing him from adding, a little later in the exchange, that he would see no incompatibility therewith with the fact of "becoming the new Bono". A brazenness that hastens to defuse an ingenuous smile, pushing away the still distant specter of disappointed hopes.
October 24, 1996 Born in Mortsel (Belgium).
2017 Release of the song Habibi in Belgium and first big concert, at the Werchter festival.
October 19, 2018 Release of the album Amir.
November 19 Concert at the Café de la danse (full).

I have always liked to get to Delos early, before the crowds have trampled it, and try to see it when Leto came there first, to bear her child. She'd been dlievered of the elder twin already; maiden Artemis could run beside her hunting the game, for the infancy of gods is brief. But Leto is still big with the younger, greater one; his light glows through her, like the sun through a rosy shell. His time is come; he commands her; she crouches by the palm tree and grasps it in her pangs; the shining babe slides down between her thighs; rests for a moment, turning his blue eyes to the sky; then the birth-cord falls from him; faster on his feet than a day-old colt, he runs to the lake to rinse off the birth-bloom; swims across and back; and striding ashore in his tall splendor, shakes the water from his golden hair. Before the crowds come, I can see all that; after, I can only tell it. That year, since I came on the state ship from Keos, they were there before me. The paean and the silence, one cannot have both at once. - The Praise Singer, Mary Renault

Fur and Fangs
Romania, 1461 AD
The war against the Ottoman invaders rages. Vlad Tepes the third, current ruler of the land, launched a brutal counterattack against their forces that would go down in history, allowing future generations to use him as the basis for stories of monstrous beings. However, all stories have a grain of truth within them.
In this case, in ancient Romania, several members of the ruling class were not what they seemed.
On a small farm in the countryside of this time lived the Kernovich family. They were poor farmers, having to work year-round just to scrape out their meager living… but they had each other, and they did the best they could.
They were serfs under one Lord Dimitri Renault who, by all accounts, was a terrible person. He taxed his people heavily but did not offer them protection of any sort. If they died to banditry or to the predations of wild animals he would not shed a single tear for the loss of life. He had ruled as long as anyone living could remember, though he rarely ventured outside his home. Some suspected that the original Lord Dimitri was long dead and that his descendants simply inherited the name along with his lands…
This was both absolutely correct and completely inaccurate in the worst way possible.
One fateful day, the door to the Kernovich hovel burst open, a guardsman in heavy leathers half-carrying, half-dragging a screaming young girl out of the small building. “Come girl!” he barked, “Lord Renault warned your father what would happen if he couldn’t pay!” he snarled.
The young girl wailed and screamed, tugging at her arm, but the man’s grip was like an iron vise, “NO! NO NO PLEASE NO!” she shook her head, reaching back for her family.
Her father burst from the farmhouse, a sickle in his hand he used for shearing grain, and was barred by two more guards, their spear hafts crossed infront of him. “Don’t be a fool Kernovich. If you can’t pay in coin, you pay in child! You know the law!”
The man Kernovich shook his head, “Not this! Not my daughter! NATASHA!” he shouted, trying to push past, but one of the guards smashed their fist into his face, knocking him back into the farmhouse as his wife cried and wailed inside of it, to terrified of the Lord’s retribution to even fight back.
As they did however, a furious barking came from behind the farmhouse and suddenly the man who punched the girl’s father cried out in pain. A dog had appeared, a golden furred animal that had latched its fangs into his leg, biting through even the thick leather. “ARGH!”
The girl’s eyes widened, “LUPE! No Lupe! Run! RUN AWAY!” she shouted, shaking her head frantically.
The guardsman glared down at the dog, then raised his spear. “Damned mongrel!”
“LUPE! RUN NOW! RUN!” she screamed, then her heart caught in her chest and her eyes filled with tears as the spear came down and a loud yelp echoed across the fields.
She was thrown into a waiting carriage as the guards took up positions around it, her father shoved back as he tried to stand. “Heroes die in this land Kernovich, go back inside and shut up, or we burn down the farm with you in it.” grunted one of the guardsmen, who turned to leave, climbing onto the outside of the carriage as it rolled away.
Inside the carriage Natasha untangled herself from her dress, the girl’s eyes red and her face tear streaked as she looked across the vehicle. Sitting there was a man in an embroidered robe, black with red decorations. A thin creature with pale skin and sunken eyes. “Good day to you young Kernovich. I am Lord Renault’s attendant.” he smiled at her as if he’d just picked her up to take her for tea. “Lord Renault will be having you for dinner this evening.”
Natasha looked at him, then back at her family, then whimpered, “… w-what is for dinner?” she asked, her eyes wide with fear.
The man chuckled, as if enjoying a private joke.
“I just told you child. You are for dinner.”
Romania, fourteen years ago.
Natasha Kernovich opened her eyes, gazing up into darkness once more, then reached up and pushed the lid off. It may be considered tacky to sleep in such things by the standards of more modern kindred, but after nearly six hundred years it was hard to care about such things.
She climbed out, looking not a day older than when she was taken by Lord Renault, her sire centuries gone by her own hand. She felt no shame for this, even by their standards Dimitri had been a true monster, and his actions practically demanded the attention of the hunters.
Either way, she needed to ‘break her fast’ as it were. She dressed in a wine-red blouse, long black skirt, and heeled boots along with a long black cloak, then strode across the room and unlocked the heavy cellar door that kept out the daylight, stepping into the cool Romanian evening then paused. Her haven was near the city limits, and she smelled smoke… something was burning.
“Hmm…” she frowned, looking out into the forests.
Curiosity got the better of the ‘young’ lady. A minute later she vanished into the trees.
A mile took humans a bit to walk, but for one of her kind it was a simple matter of minutes, Natasha soon arriving at a site of carnage. She looked around her, frowning, “What could have done this…” she muttered. All around her was the wreckage of what was once believed to be a shanty town by the local humans but to her people was known to be the home of the local werewolf pack.
Was being the operative word. Men and women lay around her, sometimes with not all their parts still attached. The wounds looked like they were burned at the edges, whoever had done this had used silvered weapons against them. “Hunters. I should warn the Prince, they may come for us as we-…” she started, looking down.
Staring up at her was a small puppy-like creature with golden blonde fur, the thing clearly no more than a very small child. “A survivor…” she frowned, reaching down. “The hunters must have missed you in the smoke. Be still little one, I will put you out of your misery…” she sighed, reaching for its neck… then freezing suddenly.
The dog-like creature whimpered, cocking its head at her, and she suddenly recalled another golden furred creature from her past. A being who had been her dear friend in those days of backbreaking labor on her farm, who had kept her warm with her fur on the nights when winter’s fury turned the land white for miles and miles, and who had died shortly before she had from a cruel man’s rage.
“… Lupe…” she whispered, looking down at the creature, and her hands could go no further. “… I… I cannot… you are no normal dog, you are a werewolf like them… but…” she hesitated, shaking her head, “If… the prince does not know…” she reached further, picking the puppy up around it’s middle instead, lifting it up. As she did the fur receeded, and she was looking at a toddler with a mane of shaggy blonde hair, large wolf-like ears, and a stubby tail. The girl was wagging at her.
“I risk so much by doing this… it is foolishness of the highest order…” she whispered, “So, why can I not stop myself?” she asked herself, cradling the werewolf cub to her chest as it nuzzled in and listened to the beating of her heart. It could not hear her breathing, nothing else, but the heartbeat was loud and soothing to the cub after being surrounded by death.
… except, she still was surrounded by death, and was simply too young to know it yet.
The Wulfshead Club, Tonight
It seemed like Franklin was still mustering his forces after the last failed assault, knowing now that Nelen had joined up with his transformed sister and her Vanara friend had given the Patriarch pause. He wanted her dead, but he could not simply throw Fullmoon men at them until they got lucky, even moreso as he knew full well what the warlock could do, having seen the ruins of Isolde’s former hedge gate firsthand. Because of this, it had actually been a quiet week since their return from Sicily with tales of cyclopti, ale, and excitement.
The door to the bar opened up that evening as Nelen and Dawn walked in, with one other. “HEY GUYS! Look who WE found!” grinned the Cheshire, pointing to their companion.
Rajesh strode into the bar, wearing a white button-down dress shirt and slacks, having just come from his duties with the Jaipur government. Several of the patrons raised their drinks in greeting and more than a few calls of ‘hey!’ and ‘Welcome back!’ came out.
Shaman Bond got up from his table and grinned, walking over to shake his hand. “Rajesh Barjar! Good to see you again mate! Nelen told us about that girl his sister ran off with, never would’ve guessed she was your daughter you old tiger you!” he chuckled.
Rajesh smiled, “Shaman my friend, it has been far too long. Nelen told me of your encounter with that hobgoblin in London, well done.” he smiled.
Shaman shrugged, “Eh, it was just one hob, barely even a bother really.” he chuckled as they got a booth, ordering their drinks.
A few rounds in Shaman looked over at Rajesh, “So, mate. You still collecting artifacts?” he asked.
Rajesh nodded back, “Indeed. Only through mundane channels these days I’m afraid. No more tomb raiding, my daughter comes first.” he replied.
Shaman nodded, “Good man. Well, in that case, you may be interested in something I heard. There’s an auction going up in Bucharest over in Romania next week and I heard they’ve got some stuff up on the block that’s from one of the old vampire lords that used to live around there. Some Dimitri bugger.” he nodded.
Nelen looked up, “Really… and whats he got to say about that?” he asked.
“Not much, got staked well before our time, but someone found a warehouse full of his old stuff and they’re selling off the lot. Word among our folk is that there’s more than a few relics that have some power to ‘em in there.” he nodded.
Rajesh nodded, “Hmm… I suppose it may be a good idea to take a break from Jaipur for a while. The situation is cooling down, but if we publicly leave then Clan Fullmoon has no reason to come here until we return.” he mused aloud.
Nelen nodded at that, “Yep, though that means we have to take Arja and Simoni with us of course.” he replied. “They gonna be okay with that you think? We just got back from Sicily after all…”
Rajesh nodded, “My family is used to travel for my work Nelen. She is homeschooled as well, so it is no bother. Truly I believe she relishes it. She talks of how her ancestor would go on all sorts of adventures and fancies herself as much the same.” he nodded.
Nelen shrugged, “Well, I mean, by mundane standards she definitely is. Its not like you get to have a grill out with a bunch of cyclopti in Sicily and not call it an adventure.” he chuckled. “Alright then, what's the date of this thing Shaman?” he asked.
Bucharest, Romania, one week later
Arja and Simoni walked through the city, the young girls taking in the sights with Nelen and Dawn in tow. The city of Bucharest had stood for hundreds of years and was even home to Curtea Veche Palace where the famous (or infamous depending on who you asked) Prince Vlad the Third ruled from. Whatever you believed about his actions in driving back the Ottoman Empire, none can deny that ‘Vlad the Impaler’ had left his mark on history. Whether he was truly a national hero or a cruel beast is the matter of much debate, but despite some stories… he was not a monster whatever he was.
Despite all the legends of ‘Count Dracula,’ Vlad Tepes lived and died a mortal man.
But that does not mean that such things do not stalk the streets of Bucharest… or in this case…
As the group strolled through the city a young girl and their dog rushed infront of them, the girl dressed in dark clothes that evoked a gothic fashion sense, and close on her heels were three larger adult men.
Nelen watched them duck down an alleyway, frowning… “The fuck was that about…” he muttered, then suddenly the four of them stopped as they heard a young girl’s voice scream.
“Oh hell no.” growled Arja, “C’mon, we’re not going to let someone get attacked right infront of us are we?!” she shouted, rushing down the alleyway the girl had fled through, Simoni running off after her.
Nelen scowled, “Dammit girl! Don’t just rush in!” he shouted after her, charging down the alley in pursuit as Dawn ducked in alongside him.
Further up the alleyway, Natasha Kernovich was having a REALLY bad night…
“End of the road Natasha…” said one of the men, a tall man in a loose silk shirt and jeans, fingering a long dagger. “Prince Micahel told you quite clearly; the mutt goes, or you both go…” he grinned, the other two drawing close.
Behind her a large golden furred hound growled low, its ears flat against its head. It was a massive creature with a huge mane and a long tail, looking like it’d be more at home in the woods than in the city. “I will not let you hurt Lupe…” she hissed back angrily, but she knew she was outnumbered. She may be their elder, but there were three of them…
The one to his left shook his head, “Natty come now. If you simply wanted a pet you could buy a nice dog and make a ghoul of it, but this? A werewolf? The Prince has every reason to be concerned! They are our natural enemies girl! Maybe if you’d told him when you took her in so we could take measures to control her… but now?” he shook his head, talking in a sympathetic tone that said ‘I’m the good cop.’
“Yeah…” replied a squat one on the other side, this one wearing a long duster coat and wide brimmed hat… “You had your chance girl. Prince Micahel told you to put your pet down and you didn’t… defy the prince and your reward…” he reached into his cloak and took out a crossbow, a sharpened wooden stake loaded into it, “… well, at least we’ll make sure you get to see the sun one last time…” he smirked. This one was clearly the ‘bad cop.’
Then their act was spoiled as Dawn suddenly darted between them and slashed them both across the cheeks, bouncing off the leader’s shoulders and landing between them and the other two. “HAH! Gotcha! Extremely violent diarrhea in three… twooooooo…” she grinned, then blinked, then tilted her head, “… uh… one?” she finished in a confused tone.
The two she scratched were feeling their cheeks, looking more annoyed than anything. “Uh oh…” she whispered. “That should have worked… uh…” she looked closer, noticing all the tells she’d come to recognize over the years with Nelen. “Crap… HEY GUYS! BATS IN THE BELFRY!” she shouted.
A second later bad cop burst into flames as good cop was grabbed by a tendril of blood and wrenched backwards hard, slammed into the ground as the tendril sprouted fangs all along it, then shot back with excessive force. What was left could have been called ‘hamburger’ for the brief second before it crumbled into dust.
Their leader turned around, his eyes huge as Nelen, Arja, and Simoni stood there, Nelen’s hand outstretched as a tendril of Merihim’s essence lashed around furiously at the end of it. “Got one chance Batman, run or join Robin and Nightwing down there.” he warned.
Long ago Dawn and Nelen had worked out how to communicate without tipping people off. Sounding like you’re shouting nonsense was better than the alternative anyways, and it meant either way the mundanes didn’t know what was going on until someone was a pile of ashes. Nelen had made a point of explaining to Arja and Simoni as much of their private lingo as he could.
‘Bats in the belfry’ meant ‘I have identified the persons infront of me as vampires and you may now stop holding back.’
However, “… what? Robin? Nightwing?” grunted the surviving vampire.
Simoni blinked, “Nelen, we’re in Romania. Do they even have those comics over here?” she asked.
Nelen grumbled something under his breath and said, “Lemme put it this way then: get the fuck out of here or I kill you dead.” he clarified.
The vampire glared at him, but the blood tendril clearly said magic user and he didn’t see what had set the other one on fire. The fight had gone outside his control. He frowned, then leapt straight up twenty feet and latched onto a fire escape, pulling himself up and rushing up the stairs to the rooftop and safety.
“Aaaaand three for three.” grinned Dawn, turning to the girl, “Can’t say I approve of the companion, more of a cat person myself, but… uh…” she looked at Natasha’s face, then quickly backpedaled away from her, “SHIT! Guys! She’s one too!” she hissed at her.
Natasha stepped back and reached behind her, pulling her own dagger out of its sheath and hissed back herself. “Stay back hunters! I do not wish to harm you, merely to leave Bucharest! Do not stop us!” she warned.
Nelen drew Merihim back into his hand, “Dammit… thought we were rescuing some mundy kid from getting assaulted or something.” he frowned, “Shit like this doesn’t happen among undead for the fun of it… did we just piss off the local vampire leaders?” he asked, looking at her. “C’mon, out with it, why were those three after you?” he said, stepping forward…
As he did however the dog darted infront of her, growling angrily, and changed.
It shot upwards on its hind legs, its front paws getting longer and spreading into hands, and soon a very angry looking young woman was standing there… with a huge mane of golden-blonde hair and pointed wolf-like ears, her tail thrashing behind her. Her arms and legs from the elbow down were hairier than the worst body hair, and her nails were like long hard claws. “BACK!” she barked out in broken Romanian, “NO HURT! STAY BACK OR LUPE BITE! LUPE CLAW!”
Dawn hissed angrily and teleported up onto the wall above them, clinging to it with all fours, her tail fluffed out and thrashing behind her. Human shaped or not, some responses are just automatic.
Nelen took a step back himself, holding up his hands. He didn’t have any silver on him, he didn’t think he’d need it tonight… Simoni’s thoughts immediately went to her old silver dagger that wound up a melted blob of metal in her mom’s fireplace too.
“Eaaaaasy now… not gonna hurt anyone unless I got a reason to…” Nelen replied, glancing at Natasha, then back at the werewolf. “Uh… huh… a vampire and a werewolf… that’s unexpected.” he muttered.
“It is?” asked Arja, having already shifted into her vanara form, flexing her own claws.
“Yeah…” Nelen muttered back, “Vampires and werewolves get along like cats and dogs… literally when you think about it. One hisses and sticks to rooftops, the other chases its tail and barks at the moon. Seeing two of them being all pals is really rare…”
Natasha however was looking them over. Two young Indian girls, dressed casual but well, and a man who wasn’t Indian defending them, probably hired for it… and bodyguards, especially magic using ones, weren’t cheap. “Wait… you are not from Bucharest are you?” she asked.
Simoni shook her head, “No, we’re from Jaipur… in India.” she replied, something about this felt different.
Natasha looked between them, “… you will have to go back… take us with you!” she nodded.
Nelen looked at her suspiciously, “Why?” he asked, keeping his hands ready incase he needed to unleash some Hell.
Natasha stepped forward, slowly sheathing her dagger as she gently pulled Lupe back, then replied, “Micahel, the local prince, is demanding I cast Lupe out or kill her! I found her in the woods after a hunter attack, her entire pack had been slaughtered to the last and she was the only survivor… I… in my mortal days I had a dog that looked so much like her and I could not leave her… I cannot harm her…”
Lupe whined, padding over to Natasha on all fours and nuzzling her hand, acting much more like an animal than a human despite her currently humanoid appearance.
Natasha smiled sadly at her and stroked over the werewolf’s head, “I believe the attack traumatized her. Lupe is more beast than woman. Without me she could hurt someone…”
Dawn slowly crawled down the wall at this. “You… took her in after her family died?” she asked, her tail still puffed out.
Natasha nodded, “She was little more than an infant at the time…” she replied, “I believe that is how she survived. She was so small she was overlooked by the hunters.”
Dawn slowly lowered her glasses, and her mind went back to a warehouse in Michigan… “Nelen, they’re coming.” she said.
Nelen blinked, “Wait, what? Dawn, I mean I’ve worked with some decent bloodsuckers in the past but…” he started.
Dawn looked back at him and glared, “They’re coming. There’s barely any vampires in India and ZERO werewolves right? No competition. She’s barely any taller than Simoni! She won’t have to kill people to feed at her size! Let ‘em come!” she hissed.
Nelen raised his eyebrow at her, “I’m not strictly speaking opposed to the idea, but why do you care? You’re a Cheshire, to you it really is cats and dogs! You’re a cat and they’re a dog!” he asked.
“DO I GOTTA SAY IT YOU DAMN WIZARD?!” she hissed, “SHE!” Dawn pointed to Natasha, “ADOPTED HER!” she pointed to Lupe, “AFTER HUNTERS KILLED HER FAMILY! HEY, HAVEN’T WE HEARD THAT STORY BEFORE?!” she snapped.
Natasha and Lupe glanced at each other, the vampire shrugging to her companion.
Nelen's eyebrows went up as he made the connection, “OH! Oh, oh shit yeah… right… damn, shit…” he muttered. “Look, I mean… we gotta convince Rajesh of it. Civilized or not vampires need human blood to survive and…”
“Er… young blood actually…” said Natasha.
“What?” they all asked.
She coughed awkwardly, an interesting feat as she did not actually need to breathe, “… young human blood… my curse is a bit… particular…” she admitted.
Nelen sighed, “Right, great, a vampire with a specialized diet too…” he grumbled, “Okay, but how the hells do we sell this to Rajesh then?” he grunted.
Natasha looked away, “Your friend is right however, I do not need to kill to survive. I cannot promise I will not if I lose control, no vampire can… but… I cannot leave Lupe to the Prince’s mercy. He would kill her without hesitation.”
Dawn turned to face Nelen, glared, then pointed at Natasha with both hands, her tail thrashing behind her.
Nelen sighed, “Shit… fine… as soon as the auction is over we can ask Rajesh.” he grumbled, “No promises…”
Natasha paused, “The auction?” she asked.
“Yeah, we’re in town because some ancient noble’s stuff got found in a warehouse and they’re auctioning it off for charity or something. Dimitri something.” he replied.
Natasha started a bit, “Dimitri… Renault?” she asked.
“Yeah that’s the one. My employer collects rare and unusual antiquities, especially ones with a supernatural history to them.” he nodded.
Natasha thought, then grinned in a way that showed her long canine teeth, “Then, perhaps we can come to an… agreement…”
Three days later in Jaipur
A young girl named Saanvi jogged towards home. She knew she was out too late, but she was having far too much fun with her friends! Now it was nearly half past midnight and her mother would be furious!
As she ran along she saw a foreigner standing near an alleyway, a young looking girl in a red silken top and black skirt. She wondered why she was dressed so funny, then glanced at the girl’s face and saw her eyes… and froze like a mouse caught in the gaze of a cobra.
About ten minutes later she woke up in the alleyway, resting against the wall. She felt a bit lightheaded but put it down to the time. She was up VERY late after all. She got up a little unsteadily, then continued on home.
Natasha stood on a nearby rooftop, looking around at the city. A new home, Lupe seemed to really like having a jungle close by to explore too, and all it took was her sire’s old signet ring.
Most of Dimitri’s old jewelry had been lost over the centuries, melted down for the gold, but she’d plucked off his ring as the finger it rode on had crumbled to dust the day she’d put him to the sword. It had sentimental value, but for her golden furred companion it was a small thing. Besides, she was staying at their residence in the wine cellar, she could see it whenever she wanted.
Rajesh had been overjoyed to accept such a rare find, but his joy was tempered by the warning that if a single young girl turned up dead and bloodless in Jaipur that he’d have Arja set her coffin on fire after nailing it shut with her inside.
Rajesh was a good man, but he was no fool. Natasha couldn’t blame him really, she was a vampire after all. Still, she could make this work if she was careful. Sip, don’t guzzle, try to space out where and when she fed. Jaipur was a huge city and she was one vampire…
Natasha nodded to herself. She’d lost Lupe once centuries ago, she would not lose her again. In the distance she heard a wolflike howl go up, and smiled, fangs shining in the moonlight.

Another Chapter
Tumblr media
The point of stories were always for the adventure, the memories to bring along and to share or the enjoyment of life. To live unapologetically from one interest to another. Like all stories that begin, they would eventually come to an end. Chapters too. Little bits of endings that left you wanting more.
For Hale, some chapters and doors had closed on themselves leaving behind some aspects of her life. Still the story continued but the adventures changed. She had begun working out of Stormwind, owning two ships now that had brought her ‘collections’ all over Azeroth. In the stretch of 2 years she had a place in Boralus which acted as a small home away from home, being busy on her own home front, reconnecting with her mother, settling down into a less than traveled lifestyle.
She had parted ways from most of those she knew and took up residence within the family home she had perched quietly overlooking the ocean; a decent parcel of land between Elwynn and West fall.
This time of year, the wheat fields of her neighbors rippled as golden waves along the breeze, nearly ready for the Autumn harvest. For a time the brunette watched the distance, staring off to those rows of corn fields and wheat, an apple in her hand as she sat under her own apple tree. Pale greens eyes tentatively veered back to the small brown haired boy not too far off who had been crouched sniffing the petals of wildflowers and even taking the time to wedge his small fingers into the pollen infused centers; likely poking at the bugs and whatever other little curious insects he could find.
A house by the sea and a small apple orchard. Besides the more frivolous things she wanted through her life in the past -- they seemed ever changing -- those two things were the ones that remained ever constant. A place to settle and let her business thrive -- a decision which had ultimately kept her from the idea and postured-marriage to her childhood friend causing them to part ways. A decision which had its own rewards and perfectly valid reasons.
“Mama!” the small called out and with expected response, Hale looked to her son who came up with something in hand.
“What do you have there?”
“Bugs.”
He opened his hand and his light brown eyes lit up with glee as Hale peered into the cupping of his palm to see a small lady bug. To her surprise it wasn’t crushed to death during its capture by the 2 year old. Perhaps, a part of him was more her than his father -- that his love for insects and snakes was something he inherited from her.
For a brief moment, a wolfish smirk touched at the child's cheek and he moved his hand to shake the bug free into the grass, “Eww poop.” he once more tried to shake his hand which was swiftly met by Hale’s readied handkerchief to rid him of the musk. Something she had learned not to leave home without -- children had an odd way of making you learn.
“There. Gone.” fondly her hand lifted and her fingers combed his wild bangs from his face. Like his father his skin was softly sunkissed and to everyone’s surprise, he hadn’t inherited the Cress genes which typically was green eyes and black hair or the uncommon chance one would end up with honey colored eyes and more magical tendencies.
No.  Not him, he was every bit his father. Every bit something better than Hale could have imagined. Perhaps having extra ties to the Cress name wasn’t needed more than what he was already given. In some cases….it was a prison. Her family had eventually given up in trying to solve the mystery to the other half of her son’s parentage simply because Hale wasn’t willing to give it. Perfectly content with the blessing she had been given without having to make life additionally difficult for another. Sometimes, the best things were kept secret.
Hale smiled tenderly, “Renault?”
The little boy looked up from inspecting his fingers to make sure the musk from the bug was gone as his mother had said. Yes, this was the center of Hale’s universe now. At this crossroad, Renault was her story, this was but just another chapter in this singular book, “What do you say we take these apples inside and wash them?”
“Ahh-kay.”
The response was enough to make Hale rise and take up the bundle of apples she and Renault had collected and placed in some cloth. Cinching it within her grasp, her other hand reached for Renault.
“Ooooh no no..” he almost panicked and he swiftly turned on his heel and he crouched near the grass to pick up his little Worg stuffy that had started to become a little disheveled, “Finn!” the boy seemed happy as he tucked it under his arm and the other hand finally took Hale’s.
“Tomorrow…” Hale began as the pair walked back towards the sizeable house, the breeze at their backs and the waves in the distance just below the cliffside, “ -- we’ll go see Grandma Odell.” This was the first time in a long time, she had felt at true peace.
Unbeknown to Renault, on that breeze behind them….a shadow lingered. The same shadow that had been known to loom over his crib since birth. The same shadow he felt in his blood before he had seen the sun.
Simply, his mother’s second shadow.
A Creature.

ok so like. here’s my harry potter house thing. i’m ngl i tried to do this but then i deleted it bc it was getting too long and i didn’t have the attention span but. it kept sticking in my brain so i decided to pick it back up and as such, i’ve lost the original post but it was a quarantine activity (sort drivers into houses, assign quidditch positions, explain) posted by @verstappened. houses done first, then positions, then explanations for both. i tried to make feasible teams, i.e making sure there arent too many of a single position per house, so this really screwed some of the sorting but oh well.
i did the houses first, then positions, then explanations in that order for the most part.
5/13/20: the sorting was mostly done before i heard all the differing opinions (of which there were many!)
5/19/20: alright so this is literally like 2 months old but i’ve just finished it lolol
Lewis Hamilton:
Slytherin: THE GLORY MAN. the aloof kind of superiority, confidence, is top dog, he’s simply the pinnacle of it all. kind of lethal and doesn’t do the whole ‘looking up to others’ things (outwardly, but he seems very soft on the inside tbh). very majestic and is almost a gryffindor, the kind of slytherin that Merlin is. hard-working, got here from incredibly humble beginnings, which kind of stands out from the rest, but he’s clearly now at the top level of society. still very protective of Others. scarily ambitious. Was originally a gryffindor but I wanted the brits to be in different houses for their quidditch positions to work. Could honestly go either way though.
Seeker: more glory. periodt. he stays winning and scoring the most points. clutch-man. Speedy boy, kind of in a different world than everyone else when competing (he’s always at the front lifetimes away from everyone else lmao. playing a diff game.)
Valtteri Bottas:
Hufflepuff: HE SEEMS. LIKE. A. BIG. CHILD. always relegated and brushed off but is literally God-Tier and no one can convince me otherwise. i consider him to be rather reliable (reflecting only the 2019 season at least lmao). a bit of a vindictive streak bc he knows what he’s Capable Of even when others underestimate him. has a very bright smile.
Beater: have u seen him. he’s a big boy even though he’s 5′8 and only an inch taller than lando norris he seems bigger than he is ok
Charles Leclerc:
Slytherin: this bitch. what a snake. hiss hiss.
Chaser: he wants what lewis hamilton has but chose the wrong position. still a star in his own right. pride and joy of his house, will be at the lead of every formation play unless told otherwise by his head of house, to which he will brood and complain ab but comply in the end bc he wants Team Success and loyalty to his Family. scores the most points on the team and people act like he carries even though he literally has a partner(s).
ok but fr my gut said charles is a slytherin (do i really need to explain why? very critical, doesn’t accept inferiority, somehow succeeds. just a feeling his brain seems to fit motorsport politics well), but i was seriously contemplating whether he’d be a gryffindor to max’s slytherin instead. but then i saw someone mention the whole lion schtick and i was like for all of max’s brattiness he is Gryffindor so sharl is snake. sorry don’t make the rules just follow them.
further edit: this was written before he started streaming (this is how old this draft is) and can u believe him he’s the epitome of the “not all slytherins r evil wenches” idea
Sebastian Vettel:
Ravenclaw: idk for all of Seb’s goofiness he just seems cerebral to me. Seems to know mildly irrelevant facts and is really quite smart however is hopeless in the modern age. Kind of that wise old(er he’s not that old) man knowledge. I’d trust him to give me all the life advice I need but also to write a 10 page essay on the nuances of the effect of emotion on verbal language (which we all know he is very experienced with).
Keeper: it’s the protective Dad Power.
Max Verstappen:
Gryffindor: WAS REALLY GONNA PUT HIM IN SLYTHERIN BC HE’S A NASTY LIL SHIT. TOTAL BRAT. GIVES FUCK ALL WHAT OTHERS SAY. BUT HE IS LION AND LION IS HE SO GRYFFINDOR IT IS. also just bc he needs to oppose sharl in every way possible it’s called Poetic Cinema. also his driving style is clearly the bravery and confidence to the point of recklessness that is prevalent among gryffindors.
Chaser: again, he must oppose Charles. so, not a seeker although he’s clearly singularly the most prized competitor. just like Charles, pride and joy of house, their star chaser. the comparisons never end. the competition never ends. the fighting never ends. one of the most interesting and dynamic performers to watch, is predictable in that he’s not predictable except that he will always be aggro to the max. will always be in trouble for getting rough bc that’s Not His Job but that’s just the gryffindor disregard for rules. master point scorer.
Alex Albon:
Gryffindor: was really a toss up btwn this and Hufflepuff but the ultimate deciding factor was the fact that I wanted all the British Boys to be seekers. he really just sticks it out as max’s teammate like a real one (nothing against max, everything against Helmet Merco) for the good of the team, still is sweet with max anyway. fitting that they’re in the same house too.
Seeker: he’s not the small boy that lando and lewis are but he is (thai/)British. very special boy (big ups on the promotion even tho it was Sad Times for Pear) deserves very special job. also he has a hot girlfriend (alex albon who i only know lily he’s boy toy) idk how that’s relevant but it seems fitting.
Carlos Sainz:
Ravenclaw: bc he’s a spaniard but is still better at english than Lando (i think everyone is tbh). Seems to be a quiet type of smart, sensible, but perhaps this is just the consequence of being compared to Lanno at all times LMAO (no hate all love bby Lannd). would be the type of ravenclaw to follow his friends on absolutely idiotic ventures but would step in to prevent near death or likely-legal-problem causing actions (and only then; otherwise it’s every man for themselves and everyone is free to make a fool of themselves and break some laws. carlos may dabble in such practices.)
Chaser: seems to be a go-getter, not going for points doesn’t even cross his mind. will always be the one driving up the pitch, the strategist of sorts bc he seems big(ger) brain (than lando lololol).
Edit: I wrote this part ab him long ago but this entire section of this post is now irrelevant and canceled.
Lando Norris:
Hufflepuff: you all know why. zero explanation needed. like, none.
also has a bit of an aggressive streak which tends to catch ppl off guard. is not afraid to confront u (hello pageNO) and at times defies the hufflepuff stereotype of being perpetually happy go-lucky (he has his bad days!). but when with His True Crew he is absolutely a hufflepuff ball of energy.
Seeker: small and speedy. energetic to the max. small. quirky and different from the rest, so he gets the special job. small. everyone would kill to protect him. small.
Daniel Ricciardo:
Gryffindor: AW I DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE THAT I PUT HIM AND MAX TOGETHER. LOOK I EVEN MADE THEM BOTH CHASERS. AH HOW BIGBRAIN MY MIND IS. everything ab dan is gold. golden skin, the colors in redbull and renault, his smile, just the vibes. he’s just got the enthusiasm and charisma and this intensity of a gryffindor. super aggressive, his late breaking (from his rbr at least) is legendary and maddening with how he pulls it off. is almost a hufflepuff but the gut said no.
Chaser: is Max’s teammate. so yeah. was obviously the star until younger max came to the show. a bit lost in limbo bc of it but they still work well together.
literally want to make him a hufflepuff so. bad. but i couldn’t split up maxiel. also his vibe is just different from other ‘puffs like stroll so.
Esteban Ocon:
Slytherin: ask max.
Chaser: being characterized off of their relationship with max seems to be a theme here. will go head to head with max w/ absolutely zero shits given. talented, but the rivalry with max is entirely secondary to charles imho. still yet to show his full potential but is still quietly a thorn in max’s side. many are interested to see what he is able to do in the immediate future.
Pierre Gasly:
Hufflepuff: GUYS HE WANTS TO OWN A PANDA
Chaser: constantly trying to prove himself and score big boy points. had a stint as seeker until lando came along. did not do as well as ppl had hoped, returned to chaser and proceeded to crush it from there. praticed a lot with charles as children (the friendship dynamic w/ their houses was definitely unforseen but is amazing).
Daniil Kvyat:
Hufflepuff: really wanted to make him a slytherin but the quidditch positions didn’t work out. firmly believe this works though. more of the rough and tumble type, definitely the kind that will sock u in the nose if u write off hufflepuffs as a joke. could honestly probably be a gryffindor too with how unapologetically aggressive he can be in the name of His Beliefs. gives me big dumb himbo vibes now that i think ab it tbh which is mostly the justification here. also he has a child omg.
Chaser: but the one that’s always headbutting bludgers out of the air (torpedo bitches). also had a stint as seeker before but it Was Not His Thing. he’d much rather be chasing and throwing things than seeking things. also he’s pierre’s mate :,) would’ve been a beater but romain and valtteri will not be anything else so daniil took the boot whoops.
Sergio Perez:
Slytherin: it’s just the vibe. knows his weaknesses and is able to make up for it with his confidence and talent in his strengths. very ambitious, plays the right cards at the right times to get the right results. something ab him puts me on edge, but like in a good way; i feel like there’s always a trump card up his sleeve, like when he gets to q3 out of fucking nowhere in a racing point.
Keeper: he gives me the same vibes as seb idk what it is. very dependable, backbone of his team.
Lance Stroll:
Hufflepuff: guys have u seen the guy. he’s just here to have a good time. may seem a bit airheaded at times but he means well 99% of the time. untapped potential. seems like a no thoughts head empty canadian hockey boy (and every one of these types is a hufflepuff don’t fight it); may or may not be the only accurate description of him.
Chaser: he’s just trying his best out here. i
KEEPER?: SO I DID A QUICK GOOGLE AND HE USED TO BE A HOCKEY
GOALIE?????
so scratch my initial thoughts (tbh i didn’t really know where to put him and i originally had romain as keeper but that’s an issue to fix later on now) BECAUSE LANCE STROLL IS A keeper GOALIE AND NO ONE CAN REFUTE THIS. ABSOLUTELY NO HUMAN OF THIS EARTH. WHAT GLORIOUS INFORMATION TO STUMBLE ACROSS.
Kimi Raikkonen:
Slytherin: guys i really don’t have an in depth analysis of this but i don’t think iceman needs one.
Beater: see above^. y’all must get the vibe.
tbh could also be a keeper tho similar energies to seb and checo, but honestly his no fucks given attitude is ultimately what swayed me
Antonio Giovinazzi:
Gryffindor: he just has that majestic quality (that could also fit a slytherin but i only see red when i see antonio). look at that lion’s mane. also he’s one of kimi’s to paddock friends? seems fitting that he’s a gryffindor to kimi’s slytherin.
Chaser: plays second fiddle to the duo that is max and daniel, often regulated to vibing on the side. but he’s there and he’s important and he has potential (i’ve been seeing ppl talking ab a ferrari move and i’m positively shaken). [edit: again, this post is old.]
im sorry its glaringly obvious idk much about him asdfjasldkd
Kevin Magnussen:
Slytherin: guys lots of these are just self explanatory sorry if i seem like im taking the cheap way out but it’s fact. brundle and crofty call him a great white shark for crying out loud.
Beater: unapologetically chaotic. lurking around the edges making people feel hunted. spends more time playing baseball in the middle of the matches than quidditch and sometimes it backfires but it’s good fun and it sometimes works.
Romain Grosjean:
Hufflepuff: y’all he’s such dad energy and he likes to cook. gets written off a lot but he actually cares (he’s a part of the grand prix drivers assoc.!). he seems so wholesome and he spends time with his kids and their school work when he can do u feel those water drops yeah those r my tears.
Beater: i really wanted to make him a slytherin beater to make him teammates with k-mag but he’s just. not a slytherin. but i kept the beater part. spends the majority of the hufflepuff v. slytherin matches sending bludgers kevin’s way even when he doesn’t mean to. it’s always reciprocated.
George Russell:
Ravenclaw: I’VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN THIS KID. is so marvelously well spoken and he just has such a simple yet effective way with words. he knows what’s reasonable to expect but never fails to expect the most that he can given his circumstances. again, mentioned this before but a lot of it is his accent. the glottal stop is a historically stereotypically rural (i.e. “uneducated”) thing but I’m American and I Don’t Listen to the Rules, so the accent just makes him seem so sophisticated to me especially when he’s saying things like “horriiiiiiiific” and presenting his hefty powerpoints.
Seeker: my British Boys Are Seekers headcanon continues. definitely a Golden Boy of the team kind of guy (hello tragic dumpsterfire that is williams :/ ).
Nicholas Latifi:
Hufflepuff: same boat as lance. his twitch streams are so wholesome he’s just chilling man. twitter made me write him off as daft and unnecessary at first but like fuck twitter i’m all here for ninky latvia now.
Chaser: lowkey gives me keeper vibes as well? the sensible, level-headedness. but obvs that’s lance so chaser it is. still the level-headedness that helps him hold down the fort btwn pierre and daniil who can tend to get a bit imaginative, and also the energies of them + lando.
5/19/20: so it’s quite clear to me that i grew tired of brain functions the more time i took on this and the later ones are a bit lacking and for that i’m very sorry. that being said i’m still happy to see this finished bc the idea was VERY exciting for me.

Hey Elle,
If you were a driver, which teams would you like to drive for and which teams would you rather avoid and why?
Follow up question: looking back at last season which drivers would you like to hang out with if you were a driver yourself?
Have a great day 🦢
hey Anon! this is such a cool question, and I’ll guess we’ll just ignore the fact that I’m a terrible driver for a few minutes, lmao.
teams I would like to drive for: well, the first thing that comes to mind is McLaren. it seems like they have created such a loving and supporting work environment and I think as a driver, that would mean a lot to me. I also would just love to work with Zak, because literally everything that man does and says is somehow hilarious to me. Racing Point or Aston Martin or whatever it’s called. I feel like whether my teammate would be Lance or Seb, either of those situations would be a win-win situation. they all seem so sweet there, and I’d love to hang out with them. Mercedes. the car is incredible, the people are nice, and I love how they strive for diversity. preferably with Lewis as teammate, because I would fall asleep in interviews if I had to listen to Valtteri whispering the whole time next to me. I also love dogs. Williams. not the best car, but definitely the funniest mechanics. whether I’d have Nicky or George as teammate, I’d LOVE it there. also, I’m really not a competitive person so I’d love the non-existing pressure of knowing you’re finishing last almost every race weekend, I know this sounds weird, but the idea of getting into points and the whole team losing their shit at that, is incredible to me.
teams I would avoid: Red Bull. no doubt. not just because of the toxicity of their work environment, but also because I am Dutch too and I feel like I would get into a few arguments with Max along the way (I would probably also try to punch his dad. with the emphasis on ‘try’, I am not very tall). I’m pretty sure Red Bull would eventually drop me for pissing off their golden child. I would also avoid Ferrari. I do love Italian food, but I wouldn’t be able to get over the way they treated Seb. I’d probably show up the first day wearing a clown’s nose thinking it was part of their work gear and nagging about why they treated Seb so badly and Binotto would get annoyed. I feel like they would eventually drop me for the simple fact that they think I’m annoying, and also for bullying Charles. Renault. took French in high school and I’m still traumatized. Haas, but ONLY if Mazepin would become my teammate. the way I would yell at this man... let’s just say Guenther Steiner would be jealous. if Mick would be my teammate, there’d be no problems, apart from the fact that I’d probably do something stupid like fall in love with him.
drivers I would hang out with: definitely George, because I feel we’re a bit alike personality wise. also Nicky, because he seems so sweet!! I feel like Seb would adopt me and I’d be 100% okay with that. Lando and Daniel I could tolerate, but not for a very long time, because I’m very introverted and at some point I’d be like... okay please shut up for a little bit now. I’d probably try to befriend Lance, but it wouldn’t work out because we’re both introverted and we’d probably just sit there in silence.
I wrote this instead of working on a school assignment, oops. I’ll go do that now. hope you’re having a good day, Anon! 🧡

What are some of your favorite underrated/under-referenced/under-adapted Greek myths and why?
One thing I love about Greek mythology is how everybody knows everyone else. Like - in other cultures, you tend to have disconnected mythological cycles - for instance, Fionn mac Cumhaill and Cú Chulainn are not friends and they don’t interact with each other, while you can find a link between Jason and Herakles, or Theseus and Ulysses quite easily. Admittedly, these links are sometimes a bit forced, and mostly a consequence of ancestor-bragging and an obsessive need to catalogue and navel-gaze, but they do create a magnificent web of characters - a fascinatingly complete ‘alternate reality’ that rarely (or never) comes up in modern retellings.
For instance, one of my favourite things is the whole Atreides mess - how you start with Tantalus and how he sacrificed his son Pelops so he could cook a worthy meal for the gods, and how the gods punished him harshly and brought Pelops back to life.
(As in the story of Iphigenia - and also Isaac - there is some clear memory here of a time when child sacrifice was deemed acceptable, and the effort of an entire society to redefine it as not okay.)
Next is the story of Pelops courting Hippodamia, and enlisting the help of Poseidon (according to gossip king Pindar, a ‘former lover’) to win a chariot race and thus her hand. Then there is a whole thing involving Pelops’ sons and a lot of cannibalism and general trickery - incredibly, this connects directly not only to the Trojan War (Agamemnon is Pelops’ grandson) but to Oedipus as well (Oedipus’ father was in love with another one of Pelops’ sons, and he may or may not have kidnapped the boy) and thus to virtually everyone else. What I find so enticing here is that while there is a strong element of ‘otherness’ in the heroic myths (like the presence of the gods, or the idea of family curses passed down through generations) you also find a lot of domesticity, with heroes knowing of each other, visiting each other, and joining each other’s adventures only to drop out when they find something better to do (not shaming Herakles for going after his boy toy because relatable, but well - he did promise Jason he’d help out with the Golden Fleece).
So I guess the answer to your question would be - every single story is under-adapted, under-referenced and underrated, probably because Greek culture is much more other than we’re comfortable with, or are even able to grasp. If you think about it, even those stories which are told and retold ad nauseam - mostly the Trojan War - often miss the mark completely. Like, many modern retellings completely underplay the role of the gods in that war, and while I understand (but don’t share) the current need for gritty realism and modern cynicism, that’s not a myth you can tell right without the gods.
(It literally loses all meaning, because in a way the whole idea behind that war is deciding whether humanity deserves to be saved or not, and its heroes’ actions are much better understood through that lens.)
This could be a depressing, snobbish and controversial conclusion, but tbh for a long time I was addicted to any piece of fiction based on Greek antiquity, and the only thing I found that came close to capturing that world as I understand it were Mary Renault’s books. Everything else is basically jocks with a tunic, gay lovers turned into cousins and liberal splashes or anachronistic art.

Exiting the vampires' palace: The tabloids are angry because Harry revealed how it works
Tumblr media
You're not meant to explain how the gossip gets made.
Mic Wright
The British Royal Family, the Captain Renault in Casablanca of repressed and repressive families, is shocked! shocked! to find out that bad parenting was going on in there. Prince Harry’s decision to talk about parenting — his experience of it and approach to it — on the Armchair Expert podcast has sent the firm and its frenemies in the tabloid press into a frenzy.
But the real issue is not that Harry discussed his relationship with his father or the fact that coldness permeates the parenting style of the royal family from top to bottom, it’s that he continues to unpick the devil’s bargain between the monarchy and tabloid press. It’s a deal that’s epitomised by the headline and sub-deck over pictures of William and Kate in yesterday’s Daily Mail:
Here’s how to do it, Harry!
William and Kate get stuck in with a day of play — and pets — for Mental Health Awareness Week…
On the previous page, the paper castigates Harry for choosing to “broadcast his pain again”. So there’s how you do it to get the approval of the tabloid press:
Don’t actually talk about mental health issues, just goon around for the cameras and make sure you tolerate The Mail on Sunday publishing creepy calendars full of pictures of your children. That’s the deal.

Sometimes, when Prince Harry says sensible things (eg this morning about parenting), it would be nice if journalists discussed what he said rather than whether he has pissed off the Royals or Meghan put him up to it

The quote that’s really angered the newspapers is not one you see plastered in the headlines or dropped into huge pull quotes. It’s the moment early on in the Armchair Expert episode when Harry says:
I used to be fearful of it. Now, it’s almost like the same groups of people that come at it so negatively or try to turn it against you or weaponise it, and therefore prevent so many millions of people from doing so, actually encourages me to speak out more… I’m going to be vulnerable, if I get attacked for it, let’s see who’s actually attacking me and what’s their story? What’s their agenda? Who do they work for?
The tabloids — and I do include The Daily Mail among their number — are particularly aggrieved because Harry is refuting their claim that he was ‘turned’ against them and the monarchy by Meghan. He says he wanted out long before he met her and that the British press was a huge cause of that:
It’s the job, right? Grin and bear it. Get on with it. I was in my early twenties and I was thinking, ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be doing this. Look what it did to my mum. How am I ever going to settle down and have a wife and family, when I know it’s going to happen again?’ I’ve seen behind the curtain, I’ve seen the business model, and seen how this whole thing works and I don’t want to be a part of this.
It’s those words that are driving the tabloids even more deranged than usual. The business of celebrity gossip — and royal reporting is just celebrity gossip about one family — requires the people playing the game to pretend there is no game.
In the most privileged professional wrestling ever, Prince Harry has broken kayfabe; he is consistently choosing to tell the story behind the story, to point at the paparazzi, the columnists, the palace flunkies, and the press barons and say, “Who are they working for? And what is their agenda?”
It’s one of the things a prince is categorically not allowed to do.
That’s why a softly spoken line about how he’s trying to be a different kind of parent than his own parents and grandparents becomes “a broadside”, “a bitter attack” and “a parenting bombshell” in the hands of the tabloids.

Having listened to Prince Harry on @ArmchairExpPod I urge you to ignore the faux Royalists (some might say Racists) who want to criticise him & through him their real target, Meghan
This is a man comfortable taking about mental health, masculinity & parenting

Just look at how Harry’s words were trailed in yesterday’s Daily Mail:
Prince Harry yesterday launched another broadside at the Royal Family in which he appeared to suggest both his father and the Queen failed as parents.
But what did Prince Harry actually say? Well, substantial quotes — even then partial and cherry-picked — didn’t feature on the front page of the paper. You had to go digging inside to find them. Harry said:
“Isn’t life about breaking the cycle? there’s no blame. I don’t think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody. But…when it comes to parenting, I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered…
… For me it comes down to awareness like I never, I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it all together and go, okay, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this bit about his life. I also know that’s connected to his parents, so that means that he’s treating me this way that he was treated which means, how can I change that for my own kids? And, well, here I am.”
It hardly reads as a broadside or a condemnation of his parents or grandparents. It comes across even less like that if you listen to the podcast to hear the tone of Harry’s words and place them within the context of the conversation. But context isn’t king for the tabloids, it’s not even allowed into the palace. Context lives out the back, milks the cows, and waits for a regime change.
In 1994, when Prince Charles was 46, 10 years old than Prince Harry is now, he spoke to Jonathan Dimbleby for an authorised biography and a notorious documentary. As The Independent reported at the time:
It is abundantly clear that Prince Charles did not feel the affect of a loving father and mother, and that he considers his parents, in the words of the child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, to have been not 'good enough'.
Dimbleby, with Prince Charles's approval, accuses the Queen of being physically and emotionally distant. But his deepest anger is reserved for the Duke of Edinburgh, who is described as 'harsh', 'hectoring' and deeply irked by his son's solemn and over-sensitive nature.
Prince Charles blames his father for sending him to Gordonstoun, the Scottish public school, where he was beaten up, bullied and abused, and he accuses Prince Philip of forcing him into marriage with a woman he scarcely knew and never loved.
But with Prince Philip now dead, the Queen in her final years, and Prince Charles set to succeed her as King Charles, all that stuff is meant to be stuffed back into the wardrobe. The story is that Harry and Meghan are bad and William and Kate are good and anything that complicates that picture is ignored.

So instead we get stories about how shocking! Prince Harry’s mild comments actually are and outraged stories from places like The Sun about swearing:
TURN THE HEIR BLUE
Prince Harry SWEARS on podcast as he asks Dax Shepard about ‘s*** load of drugs’ and ‘getting s*** done’
Yes, The Sun that leers over women daily and writes lasciviously about “romps” is too chickens*** to write the word “shit” out in full and pretends that the Royal Family themselves don’t swear like navvies when they’re in private.
Meanwhile, in The Daily Telegraph, Royal Family sources — the same family who forced Prince Harry to walk in public beside his mother’s coffin when he was just 12, remember — decry him for his “woeful lack of compassion”. And, of course, the issue of swearing is brought up:
And aside from the highly personal content, royal sources suggested that the family was disappointed by the foul language used during the expletive-strewn 90-minute interview.
There’s nothing but compassion in the interview, but focusing on the ‘rude’ words and implying criticisms that simply aren’t there is just part of the tabloid game. They are livid with Prince Harry for making it clear that the dirty deal with the press was a huge part of what made him leave.
It’s not that Prince Harry is talking that so angers the tabloids, but that he is talking about them and the things they do; that one of his examples of times he felt helpless is being in a car with his mother and being chased by paparazzi. Royals saying quotable things is part of “the business model” but royals talking frankly about the poisonous role of the British press in public life is not.

Sarah Vine, deploying the industrial-strength feigned ignorance which is one of her great superpowers as a columnist, wrote in The Daily Mail yesterday:
It’s clear now that Harry is someone who, for whatever reason, has come to loathe the very fabric of royal life and managed to convince himself, for all the privilege and status afforded him, his upbringing was a prolonged torture. And that is very sad and destructive…
… Far from exorcising his demons, Harry’s newfound freedom seems only to be feeding the monsters. He talks about his shoulders dropping and a weight lifting since he moved to America; but all the evidence seems to point to him becoming more, not less, unhappy.
As ever, it’s The Daily Mail delighting in gaslighting and a partial retelling of the facts, cutting itself and its rivals from the frame. What could possibly have made Prince Harry feel he was trapped in a golden cage? The media looks around and conveniently spies no mirrors. And, even if it was a cage, Sarah Vine argues, this songbird should have been grateful for the accommodation.
Curiously Vine and The Mail don’t include the section about it taking pictures of people’s children or when Prince Harry says…
…because of the way the UK media are they feel an ownership over you. Literally, a full-on ownership, and then they give an impression to… most of their readers that that is the case.
… your saying that the moment we step out of our house that it’s open season and free game, what because of public interest? There’s no public interest in you taking your kids for a walk down the beach.
… it’s this rabid feeding frenzy.

Help me to understand why some of you all act like Prince Harry broke up with you personally.

I’m a republican — I don’t believe the UK should have a monarchy at all — so I don’t believe the golden cage should exist. But while it does, the tabloids benefit from it and they cannot allow anyone to get away with disparaging the system. They exist not to criticise it but to defend it and feed on it.
Prince Harry cannot ‘be normal’ now or simply shut up because even if he did, the tabloid press would not respect that silence. They would tell their own stories of why he wasn’t speaking, filling the void with fictions and half-truths. In talking about parenting and pain — even from the extraordinarily unusual situation he finds himself in — Harry will help others.
And while he’s a little too fond of Californian therapy speak, the fact that he’s talking about how we can parent differently to the way our parents or grandparents did it is an unquestionably good thing.
If you only read his words pushed through the prism of the tabloid press, you’ll think he was ranting and raving about his families failings but actually, he’s saying — he knows they did their best but he wants to do better for his own children. In the abnormal world of the royals, that’s one of the most normal things anyone has said in ages…
