The Sexy Caftan in 1979: Vogue 1886

This re-issued caftan follows in the trend that appeared in the 1960s of European and US fashion designers borrowing from cultures outside the North Atlantic. Think Nehru jacket for men. Yes, those designers were thinking global fashion back then. In fact, I would be hard pressed to think of an era when fashion from around the globe was not affecting the US and Europe in some form or another.

Here they took the caftan, traditionally thought to date back to ancient Mesopotamia, worn in north Africa, and then cut open the back neckline far down to show off some skin. This would not be a smart move for day time in warm climates if you wanted to protect yourself from the rays of the sun. But as at-home wear, or lounge wear in the 1970s, you can see the appeal.

As you can see from the sketch of the lines of the garment, it is enormous with large side panels that wrap from front to back, running over the shoulders to create sleeves as well. And then you add buttonholes to the front to draw a cord through to create some shape by drawing the fabric close to the body. They suggest crepes, I would add silk ones only, and batiste and challis. These are all light-weight fabrics which is necessary as the garment takes 5 yards of 60″ fabric. A heavier fabric would be overwhelming the the woman wearing it from sheer weight.

overconsumption in rich countries is chronic and unsustainable but by that I mean if we keep going it'll kill us. with this in mind it's pretty unfortunate how fashion brands have bred a youth culture where personal expression (and even personhood as a whole?) is based primarily on how one dresses, but in this case it doesn't at all mean making or modifying or repurposing older clothes as many past protest subcultures did, it just means buying loads of stuff you don't need and calling it core to your sense of self. the whole seasonal collection changeovers the industry does is already terrible but the fact it doesn't seem like more young people are vocally calling out this manufactured identity making is pretty dire. like this is co-optation of self-expression by multiple industries... I'm almost anti-consumption at this point like we just don't need any of this stuff )):

like yes buying secondhand is good but even better would be to not base your self-expression on mix-and-match clothing items or aesthetics or whatever to begin with. free your mind, instead become known as the woman who can identify all the regional plants or rock climb or something
