La superioridad literaria de El Fantasma de la Ópera

El lago por el que vaga y habita el Fantasma de la Ópera es una invitación a navegar por los túneles de la psique humana. Loco, trastornado, desquiciado, así como se lo ve, Erik es totalmente consciente de sus actos delirantes y subversivos que corresponden con el arquetipo que lo representa. Sin embargo, no tiene temor ni dilaciones a la hora de estrangular a alguien que se atreve a invadir su lago. Él sabe muy bien cómo manejarse en sus terrenos acuáticos y subterráneos, en los bajos fondos de la ópera de París. La idea me remite un poco al seis de espadas en el Tarot, la imagen de traspasar el velo, la transición hacia el otro lado del umbral. Espectral y enigmático el F de la O nos abre las puertas hacia los surcos plutonianos de la vida-muerte.

Laiseca hace una maravillosa introducción a este libro en la edición de Gárgola Editorial planteando un concepto interesantísimo. Erik como el monstruo, cuya definición es ‘único en su especie’. Y concluye su despierto análisis contándonos que no hay más nada que podamos pedirle a este libro, en un ápice de romanticismo, hasta incluso alguien muere de amor.

Dependiendo cual cabeza de Gorgona de los lectores universales decida hundirse en este libro, la interpretación puede pasar por varios análisis. Si usamos la vara actual, la dialéctica con la que se filtran hoy en día las cosas, no vamos más allá de una crítica superficial y llana: un tipo desquiciado rapta a una minita, obsesionado, rezagado de la sociedad y con severos problemas mentales: un machiruliento.

En oposición al análisis social de masas propongo otra manera de leer y sentirse interpelados por el libro. ¿Qué género no forma parte de esta obra magna? De alguna manera los engulle a todos. Un clásico gótico con drama, tragedia, horror, misterio, thriller, enigma, ficción histórica y arquitectónica, en conjunto con una trama artística, subversiva con chantajes y miles de condimentos. Podemos decir que absorbe un poco del todo y el libro nos puede digerir o devorar como parte de esa unidad-sabiduría universal.

Destaco del libro su profundidad máxima en todo sentido y nivel. Sin dudas nos pasea hacia un proceso de metamorfoseo y transmutación interior. El libro nos interpela y nos conecta con el delirio de la existencia, la vida-muerte, los enigmas, el juego de las ilusiones, las máscaras y la Verdad en el sentido más digno de la palabra. Leroux nos presenta el Mito de Hades y Perséfone reinterpretado. Mismos arquetipos, distintos personajes. Obra recomendada para aquellas personas con energía escorpiana y plutoniana en sus cartas astrales.

F de la O es un personaje mucho más revelador y abismal que un desquiciado secuestrador y encima mafioso. Pero fácilmente podemos caer en ese tipo de asociaciones si seguimos con la dialéctica posmo de la moralidad con la que vamos a leer en este siglo. Pobre Erik, la cancelación de los progres también formó parte de sus bromas y humor bien under.

Esta es una obra de naturaleza profunda, por eso me gustaría indagar o mencionar algunos de esos temas llamativos y detalles magnéticos:

Lo que hay detrás de uno: el acto de develar, excavar o escarbar en el otro. La obra pone en juego de manera literal el mundo del enmascaramiento. ¿Qué es lo que hay detrás de la máscara y cuál es el misterio atrayente detrás de ella? Y luego de descubrirlo ¿cómo es posible no haya algo más al fondo que sostenga la ilusión? Christine ‘que curiosillas ustedes las mujeres’, con todo su ímpetu decide quitarle la máscara a Erik, revelando que efectivamente lo que hay debajo no guarda ningún encanto y es puro horror porque “es un cadáver quien te ama, quien te adora…”. Acto seguido, parafraseando, en este momento es cuando el mismo sabe que ella ya no volverá a ir a verlo por su propia cuenta: ya se delató la realidad, ya se rompió la ilusión, ya no hay más ángel de la música.

La obsesión y devoción por el otro. Un proceso que trae consigo la idealización, idolatría ciega al otro. La soledad, sentimiento de abandono extremo y la desolación absoluta es una de las razones por las cuales Erik se encapricha con una mujer tan mediocre. Además de esto, se pone en juego lo temerario de lo vincular y la superficialidad de las relaciones. ¿Qué es lo que le pasa realmente a Christine más allá de su ensimismamiento y profundo magnetismo? Ni ella misma lo sabe, ya que no ha penetrado en las partes más profundas de su interior. Sin embargo, sí hay un dialogo donde Raoul lo hace notar, casi aceptando su derrota con una persona que ni es rival (Erik está por fuera de todos los esquemas). “¿Para qué hablar? ¡Usted lo ama! Su miedo, sus terrores, todo eso es también amor, y del más apasionado. De los que no se confiesan. De los que se estremecen cuando se piensa en él.” El dialogo sigue con Christine expresando que F de la O la ama de manera intensa y trágica, que la raptó y encerró bajo tierra por amor.

Cabe mencionar que el tono mismo del libro es atípico. Caracterizado por un drama tremendo, atravesado por una tragedia ¿romántica? dentro de una capa sutil de humor bien underground y ácido, que quizá entre medio de tanta carga te haga sacar alguna risa. El humor del Fantasma destila su genialidad, la cual es, de alguna forma su sanación-redención o su destrucción. Esta figura mítica del personaje que se erige creando un símbolo inolvidable. Su genialidad misma lo condena, porque claramente no podía representar lo común o el statu quo, todo su arquetipo representa un potencial oculto sin descubrir. Aquí no vale preguntarse qué hubiera sido de él, genio musical, si su cuerpo físico hubiera acompañado la belleza de su voz al cantar, si no hubiera sido apartado, marginado a lo más hondo y disparatado de la escala social. ¿Victima, culpable, mártir, genio, monstruo? Decididamente hay que compadecer al Fantasma de la Opera, ya que su memoria nos habla de la liberación y el perdón a través de la expiación.

On This Day in New York City History January 9, 2006: Broadway muaical "The Phantom of the Opera" based on the 1910 Gaston Leroux novel of the same name becomes the longest running show on Broadway. The musical's home on Broadway is the Majestic Theatre.

The musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber with lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe surpassed the then record of 7,485 performances that was held by "Cats" from 1982 to 2000.

It was announced in September of 2022 that Phantom would be ending its run on Broadway in February of 2023. Ticket sales caused the end to be pushed back to April 2023. Currently the musical sits at close to 13,900 performances.
