Fics I Enjoyed in February & March
18 fics and ~720k (!!!) total. Includes fics from the following fandoms: Fullmetal Alchemist, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, Kung Fu Panda
Pornstar Martini by blatantblue/@blatantblue and brightened Hazbin Hotel | Angel Dust/Husk | 5k | Mature | Part 1 of Pornstar Martini
Naturally, Husk’s kindness goes straight to Angel’s head. This is why he doesn’t do heroin — you try that shit once, you always want it. You may never take it again, but you’ll carry the gaping-aching hole in your chest until the end of your days. Or the end of eternity. Angel never needed aftercare before; he puts the blame squarely on Husk’s huggable shoulders.
Sour Dove by blatantblue/@blatantblue Hazbin Hotel | Angel Dust/Husk | 6k | Explicit | Part 2 of Pornstar Martini
“What do you need?” Husk asks again, hand in Angel’s hair, always in Angel’s hair. Angel needs to feel something that’s his and only his. He needs to know there’s a part of him, a pathetic inch, when he doesn’t yet end and Valentino doesn’t yet begin. He needs a lie. “Put me on my knees.” Husk doesn’t even flinch. “You know I’m not gonna do that, baby.” Angel and Husk get as close as they can without breaking each other.
Call Your Bluff by RazzAppleMagic/@razzapplemagic Hazbin Hotel | Angel Dust/Husk | 72k (WIP) | Explicit
Val may be a fucking monster, but he’s a monster that Angel knows. He’s a monster that Angel understands. Angel isn’t stupid; he made the choice to sign with Valentino because he was the only overlord that made sense for Angel’s lifestyle — for what Angel wanted out of Hell. But now you’re tellin’ him that his soul is owed to some random fucking jackass who swindled Val in a game of cards? How can that be fair? How can that be something that’s just allowed to happen? (In which, Angel's contract is acquired by a new overlord — Hell's very own Gambling Demon, and they both get more from the relationship than either of them bargained for.)
snipers solve 99% of all problems by silentwalrus/@silentwalrus1 Fullmetal Alchemist | Gen | 260k (WIP) | Mature
Ed had thought, after the whole Promised Day, homunculus, entire country harvested for alchemical batteries thing, the batshit quotient of his life would have settled down some. He really ought to have topped out the meter with that one. But no. The bullshit is just getting started. “Are you fucking kidding me,” Ed demands. “The wizards?”
Call Sign: Morning Star by blatantblue/@blatantblue Hazbin Hotel | Alastor/Lucifer Morningstar | 7k | Explicit
“You,” Alastor says slowly, “came up here to proposition me?” Lucifer shrugs. “And if I did?” Joy and the thrill of friendship are not on Alastor’s frequency, and neither is Lucifer. But it may be their last night in Hell; in the circumstances, Lucifer’s mouth on him is infinitely less of a terrible idea.
You're in MY House, Bitch by brightened Hazbin Hotel | Adam/Lucifer Morningstar | 3k | Explicit
“Is this what you’ve been up to?” Adam asks. “A rubber duck orgy?” Lucifer gasps, reaching for the nearest duck and clutching it to his chest. “How dare you! I’ve never fornicated with any of my ducks. In fact … I haven’t fornicated since Lilith.” Lucifer drops the duck in favor of drumming both hands on his chest. “Well, that’s embarrassing. Why am I saying this to you?” Lucifer propositions Adam. Not in that way! But also, yes in that way.
Dusk Till Dawn by Novaeris Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 13k | Mature
When Blitzø gets drugged and kidnapped by an imp gang, he has to fight tooth and nail to make it out with his life. When his injuries prove to be a bit too much for him to handle, he sucks up his pride and goes to ask Stolas for help. Normally, not a big deal. Except this time, he hasn’t spoken to the guy since their shitty first date at Ozzie’s. And when one of his wounds gives Blitzø a nasty fever, he finds himself revealing a lot more than he intended. A post ep 7 fic with a lot of Blitzø whump and Stolas finally learning where the lines of communication had broken down between them.
Far From Heaven by Novaeris Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 45k | Explicit
After their disastrous first date, Blitzo and Stolas struggle to pick themselves back up again in the aftermath. It takes many small steps before they can finally be honest, with themselves and with each other. Blitzo learns to tell the truth. And Stolas learns that, sometimes, things aren’t as hopeless as they appear. A study of Blitzo and a study of Stolas as they fall apart and then come back together after ep 7.
Palaces and Souvenirs by CloudySonder/@cloudysonder Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 14k (WIP) | Mature
So Stolas is objectively. Objectively. Attractive. Kinda soft-looking, sometimes. Pretty. Whatever. Fuckin’ whatever. That’s always been a thing. Blitzo knew that, Stolas definitely knew that-- whatever. This is not, Blitzo thinks, sounding a little bit desperate even to himself, some sort of revelation. the lack of Slow-Burn Friends-With-Benefits to Lovers with Octavia & Blitzo Bonding as a Sideplot content in the stolitz community is Appalling, so i am merely fulfilling a demand in the market
"Red." by QUINADEN Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 10k | Explicit
Another full moon, another sexual rendevous. But when Stolas suggests that he return the favor for once, Blitz has to confront the fact that giving over even more control of the situation might be the scariest compromise he’s ever had to make.
At Your Service by QUINADEN Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 14k (WIP) | Mature
When Blitz was 10, his family sold him to the Ars Goetia family, believing that he’d have a far better life than he ever would in the circus business given his lack of general talent and skill. With his soul forever bound by contract, he has one job and one job only: to serve Prince Stolas of the Ars Goetia. Part of that duty eventually became having a nearly two-decades-long affair with the prince. But when their secret is discovered by Andrelphus, who threatens to expose them both to the Goetia family, just how far will Blitzø be willing to go in order to protect Stolas, and, by extension, his own life?
The Devil Is My Shepherd by QUINADEN Helluva Boss | Blitzø/Stolas | 28k (WIP) | Mature
No longer able to live in the comfort of the home and property he owned for decades, Blitzo has now moved in (at least temporarily) with Stolas while he recovers from his injuries sustained at the hands of the local Catholic congregation. No one said adjusting to an entirely new life in Hell would be easy, but between Stolas' daughter going through the motions of her parents separating, his new friends planning their wedding, a manager who is both younger and far braver than he is, and Stolas himself, it's been difficult, to say the least. Grappling with a brand new lifestyle and world without the comfort of the deity his parents raised him to embrace, things are certainly going to be rough. He's already been dragged down into the depth of Hell, though: how much worse could it get?
Traces of Spring by nehezt/@nehezt Kung Fu Panda | Gen | Mature
While investigating a strange phenomenon, Po inadvertently brings Tai Lung back from the Spirit Realm. Forced to live again, Tai Lung must grapple with his place in the world and the feelings that led to his attack on the Valley of Peace.
Competition by astolat/@astolat Game of Thrones | Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth | 11k | Mature
Almost the instant Brienne was out of earshot, Bronn turned to Podrick, jerked his head towards Jaime and asked, “Has he fucked her yet?”
Words by astolat/@astolat Game of Thrones | Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth | 10k | Explicit
“So we’ll look for you in the North," Robb Stark said, "coming to pay your debt."
Let The River Run by astolat/@astolat Game of Thrones | Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth/Robb Stark | 61k | Explicit
The deep satisfaction of having made the right choice; of having found a clear-flowing wellspring of true honor to protect.
Royal Flush by astolat/@astolat Game of Thrones | Jaime Lannister/Brienne of Tarth/Margaery Tyrell | 85k | Explicit
Robb Stark had swept his entire hand of cards off the table, and Tyrion couldn’t see how to make a single play at all.
Winter's Crown by astolat/@astolat Game of Thrones | Jaime Lannister/Robb Stark | 76k | Explicit
“When the Night’s King rides,” the giant said, each word slow as cold honey pouring, “the King in the North must answer. The King in the North…whose name is Stark.”

the way fullmetal alchemist brotherhood thinks about god is so interesting to me and its the only representation of religion ive ever seen in fiction that reflects my own very specific beliefs on it. like. god is the world, the universe, the truth, but god is also you. it takes your form when it speaks to you. and subsequently it is whatever you make of it. bradley mocks scars belief, asking how he can still have faith in a higher power that cares for him when the world has been so cruel to him and his people. but he is blinded by the light of the eclipse at the fatal moment in their fight, what some might call an act of god. bradley believes in no god, so one does not serve him. god is a thing of his own creation, a reflection of his actions, his beliefs, the things he puts out into the world. for scar, he believed himself to be serving god most when he was killing state alchemists, seeking vengeance, figuratively and literally only able to destroy because of the trauma surviving the extermination had left him with. he destroyed and so god was a destruction, a force that tore things apart, whether that was scar or his enemies. it is only after he grows and begins to heal as a person that he tattoos his brothers symbols of reconstruction onto his other arm and finally gains the ability to create, reflecting his new self forged motivation. it is only then, in that moment right after using constructive alchemy for the first time, that his god works in his favour, blinding his enemy at the exact right moment in order to let him win the battle against the physical embodiment of wrath. every time we see the truth, it takes the form of the person it speaks to. it reflects the person they are, the things they put out into the world. the manifestation of god is not just the things around you, it is you yourself. “i am all, i am one, and so i am also you.”

Here’s my ideas for a reboot of Fullmetal Alchemist:
In this version of the story both Father and Dante are antagonists.
There are two types of Homunculi: Those created from Philosopher’s Stones and those made through attempting Human Transmutation. While both have the traditional weakness of being reliant on a Philosopher’s Stone the latter are not purely dependent on one for survival.
Hohenheim granted Dante immortality via the implantation of a Philosopher’s Stone.
Hohenheim and Dante’s son doesn’t exist.
The events of Brotherhood’s first episode remain intact.
A combination of the manga, first anime and Brotherhood regarding Ed’s entrance as a state alchemist.
Everything proceeds according to the manga and Brotherhood regarding the beginning of the Elrics’ time in the military.
The introduction of the Homunculi begins.
Dante is replaced as a villain by Father.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos and any other material following the manga and Brotherhood remains canon.
Homunculi:
Father — Dwarf in the Flask
Pride — Selim Bradley
Wrath — Führer King Bradley
Envy — Created by Father
Greed — Created by Father
Lust — Scar’s brother’s lover
Gluttony — Created by Father
Sloth — Created by Father
Torpor — Trisha Elric
Vengeance — Izumi Curtis’s son
Mannequin Soldiers — Sacrifices
Battles (New & Reimagined):
New:
Elric Brothers, Izumi Curtis, Scar, Mei Chang & Van Hohenheim VS. Dante
Elric Brothers & Van Hohenheim VS. Torpor
Reimagined:
Curtis Family & Armstrong Siblings VS. Sloth
Everyone VS. Father
Both:
Izumi Curtis & Vengeance VS. Frank Archer
Elric Brothers, Ling Yao, Greed, Fu, Lan Fan, Van Hohenheim & Torpor VS. Pride & Gluttony
Scar & Lust VS. Wrath
____________________________________________
If you have any ideas please comment.

Doppelgangers, Homunculi and Other Narrative Possibilities in Walpurgis no Kaiten
Tumblr media
The key visual for Walpurgis no Kaiten shows Homura confronting what appears to be a duplicate of herself (or someone wearing her face). Combined with PMMM's predilection for Germanic literature references, this instantly makes me think of the concept of the doppelganger (literally "double-walker"), a term which was coined by the German Romanic author Jean Paul in his 1796 novel Siebenkäs ("Seven Cheeses").
Siebenkas (full title, Flower, Fruit, and Thorn Pieces; or, the Married Life, Death, and Wedding of the Public Defender F. St. Siebenkäs in Reichsmarktflecken, Kuhschnappel). The Wikipedia entry summarizes its plot thusly:
As the title suggests, the story concerns the life of Firmian Stanislaus Siebenkäs and is told in a comedic style. Unhappily married, Siebenkäs goes to consult his friend, Leibgeber (Bodygiver), who, in reality, is his alter ego, or Doppelgänger. Leibgeber convinces Siebenkäs to fake his own death, in order to begin a new life. Siebenkäs takes the advice of his alter ego, and soon meets the beautiful Natalie. The two fall in love; hence, the "wedding after death" noted in the title.
Since then, the doppelganger has migrated further afield, appearing in stories like Edgar Allan Poe's "William Wilson" (1839) and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Double (1846). In addition to being a figure of inexplicable mystery and horror, the doppelganger frequently infiltrates its target's life, taking on their name and place in society by displacing the original. The doppelganger is also similar to many doubles from folklore and legend, including the Celtic fetch, which is usually seen as a omen of death. None of this bodes well for Homura, obviously.
The doppelganger is also closely related to the Gothic Double, where one character's personality is divided across two bodies (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde being the ur-example). In these accounts, the character's shadow--all of the traits that they repress or deny about themselves--manifest physically in the form of a double (often distorted or otherwise visually distinctive) that serves as antagonist and narrative foil in one.
Finally, the doppelganger also serves as the inspiration for the Doppels in Magia Record, which are temporary manifestations of a magical girl's witch form inside the controlled environment of Kamihama City. However, the game takes place in an alternate continuity, so it's not clear what, if anything, will carry over to the movie.
Tumblr media
A design similar to Homura's in-game doppel from the 2015 concept movie trailer, featuring the Clara Dolls armed with pins.
While it's not quite the same as a double, there's one other example from German literature that this image reminds me of: the Homunculus from Goethe's Faust, Part II (1832). Homunculi (Latin for "little human") are perhaps best known from shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, but they have been popular in literature for centuries as alchemical creations and artificial life.
In Faust Part II, Faust's assistant Wagner creates the Homunculus--despite greeting Mephistopheles as "cousin", the Homunculus has a unique relationship with Faust, capable of seeing into his dreams. The Homunculus guides Faust and Mephistopheles to the "Classical Walpurgisnacht" featuring the Thessalian witches and other characters from Greek mythology (unlike the more Germanic Walpurgisnacht celebration from the original Part I). In contrast to Faust, who is both matter and spirit and spent most of Part I yearning to be spirit alone, the Homunculus is pure spirit, but yearns to be human. However, he dies in the process as the fire of his being mingles with water and the glass flask containing him shatters on the throne representing Love.
Given all of the Faust references in previous installments--not to mention the association of the Homunculus with fire (remember, "Homura" is a homonym for "flame" and her emblem is a salamander, which was associated with fire in European heraldry) and the shattering of the glass flask mirroring the shattering of a soul gem--it's entirely possible there might be more in Walpurgis no Kaiten. We shall see!
Tumblr media
Not every odd or unusual design choice in this show heralds back to Faust, but it's generally a good starting point.
(As an aside, a common term used to describe Wagner is famulus, which has the same Latin origins as the word "familiar". In one of those twists that makes translation so fun, it's also a 100% accurate rendering of the word Sayaka uses in Rebellion to describe her relationship to the Law of Cycles--かばん持ち, kabanmochi, or "private secretary".)
While it's still too early to tell which if any of these archetypes/references will be present in Walpugis no Kaiten, the key visual suggests that the primary conflict of the movie will be Homura confronting herself--though how and why this doubling/splitting/mirroring comes about has yet to be explained. It also suggests that the movie will be as complex, deep, and chock-full of allusions to German literature as its predecessors and I am so here for it.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a story I think gets misinterpreted a lot. People will see political drama and think that it’s a story ABOUT politics, which FMA, in my opinion, really isn’t. Not in any meaningful way. And I personally think that a lot of this comes from the misconception that the moral of a story always has to be the answer to a question. A lot of people don’t know how to interpret a text if the narrative itself isn’t guiding them, telling them what to think about every character and situation. Explaining who’s right in the story, and who’s in the wrong. Which is not to say that stories like that are bad; they’re often very effective in getting their points across. But what’s interesting to me about Fullmetal Alchemist is that a lot of the time it doesn’t really do that.
While many stories use their protagonists as their voice, a vehicle with which to impress a point, In FMA what the protagonists believe at a given moment is not necessarily what the text itself believes. The voice of the narrative is much more subtle and subtextual. Even the morals of the story are somewhat subjective. Because nobody in this story is in the right all the time. Every character, no matter how hard they try to be good, is morally grey to some degree. Every character is in some way deeply and messily involved with the story from the beginning. Whether they know it or not, every character has clear biases and is approaching these issues from a different perspective. So you don’t have this sort of outsider character coming into a conflict and judging it from an “objective” point of view, which is something you see in a lot of stories but I’ve noticed to be especially prevalent with shounen writers. I mean, you do have Ed and Al joining the military, but they aren’t really coming in with the narrative purpose of providing an outside perspective. Instead they’re using their new position as a tool with which to navigate towards their own goals and desires. Their direct involvement with and opposition to the government is something that happens later. Because really, even though a lot of the conflict and drama of FMA is fuelled on the surface by a tale of war, genocide, revolution, this sort of (again, surface level) level man-vs-state type conflict, that’s not really what the story is about. At least, that’s not what I took away from it at all.
Fullmetal Alchemist is not a story about systematic issues so much as it’s about the individual people within those systems, and how their own grief and anger and guilt manifest in how they interact not only with these systems of power, but with humanity as a whole on a conceptual level. And in my opinion that’s where the story shines. Not as a political commentary but as an exploration of people. Take Mustang, for example. He’s one of the main characters, and he’s done SO many disgustingly horrible things. Things that to most people are probably unforgivable. But…that doesn’t matter. Not his actions, those matter very much. But whether or not they’re forgivable, whether or not he’s worthy of redemption, that doesn’t matter. Not to the story, at least. The text is not explaining to you whether or not he can be pardoned for what he did. It doesn’t ask you to judge him. That’s all up to you as the viewer. Because the thing is… he has to keep going anyway. He did do those things and now he has to live with that. He has a responsibility to try and atone for what he did even if it will never be enough. To me, that’s what Fullmetal Alchemist is all about.

my feelings on The Beginning. I welcome discourse and dissenting opinions, but I do NOT welcome hate. Also I'm going to bed literally right after publishing this, so I will talk to y'all tomorrow.
I loved Fullmetal Alchemist: Digimon The Beginning a lot. Seeing the English dub was a wonderful experience and it brought me back to the reason why 02 was my favorite season in the first place. I also appreciated seeing the subbed version tonight, as it helped solidify the plot in my head.
I adored Daisuke especially. I loved Daisuke's emotions and his dialogue and his ability to strike friendship into the heart of anyone. I loved his adorable interactions with Ken, his chaotic interactions with Miyako, and his extremely ship-worthy interactions with Lui. And that scene where Ken pointed out how calm he was? Extremely powerful. Also Daisuke's queer energy was off the charts in this film, just saying. That alone means so much to me.
Also Takeru was SO in character when he was like "I know there is the possibility of Digimon partner-induced nuclear war, but hello??? Patamon might die????" I realize that's an oversimplification of his point, but it felt so right for him.
So like... I don't want to get into arguments about this, because I always feel like I'm wrong about lore and people yell at me just for thinking things they think are "wrong". So these are just my personal opinions which are obviously in no way accurate.
But in my opinion, Lui wasn't the first person to partner with a Digimon. I felt that Ukkomon was unreliable and untrustworthy and unstable, so I don't trust anything he claimed was true. I don't trust Ukkomon's concept of being the reason for Digimon and human partnerships to be accurate. I mean, I could bring Hiroki Hida and Oikawa into the mix. Or Maki and Daigo (if you try to tell me tri isn't canon just because of some interview, I'm going to block you just fyi).
I also don't entirely buy Ukkomon to be the reason the Chosen Children were even Chosen. Wouldn't Lui have been part of their adventure if that was the case? There are so many reasons the Digital World needed the Chosen Children that had absolutely nothing to do with Lui and Ukkomon. The whole Digital World's existence wasn't even mentioned regarding Ukkomon.
I really just don't trust anything Ukkomon did or said. He litterally brainwashed, manipulated, and eventually killed Lui's parents, so forgive me if I find what he says hard to believe. But I seriously loved that Ukkomon was chaotic and untrustworthy. It made for a fascinating "villain". I loved that we were lead to believe some new lore that may or may not be true, depending on how much you believe Ukkomon and Lui.
I also want to believe that now that the digivices are gone (which already happened to Sora, Taichi, Yamato, and implied Mimi, Jou, and Koushiro), that they will receive Digi-eggs soon, perhaps after they go through more important situations in their adult lives. If you know me, then you know I'm not the biggest fan of the ending of Kizuna, because I felt like it was a personal attack on my adulthood. I want more than anything for there to be a reason for Taichi and the others to see their Digimon again. I believe the ending of The Beginning gave us hope that Taichi's bond with Agumon transcends his own broken digivice.
So that's it, mostly. You can all stay tuned for when the movie is available on streaming/blu-ray, because you KNOW I'll be photoshopping ponytails onto Ken again. Also I'm planning a Daisuke/Lui fic at some point.

HEY GUYS. HERE’S A LONG ASS ESSAY ABOUT WIZ AND THE REAL LIFE THINGS THAT ITS MAGIC SYSTEM CAN BE TIED TO/MAY BE INSPIRED BY. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A YOUTUBE VIDEO SCRIPT AND IT MAY STILL BE BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T REALLY LIKE MY VOICE SO.
Wizard101 is a 2008 MMO developed by Kingsisle Entertainment. It's still going strong almost 16 years later, and at the age of 5 years old it ruined my life.
Today I want to talk about the magic - specifically how the schools of magic function. Everything about the magic system in wizard101 I want to dissect, analyze and see if we can't find any real world equivalents.
(Spoilers— a lot of this ties back to alchemy.)
Let's start at the beginning, which is probably the easiest place to start - The Song of Creation.
In lore, the Song of Creation was sung by Bartleby and Raven to save the first world. They sang this song, which wove together the spiral, which is where we currently live now.
Now, the easiest way to see this is in relation to the Big Bang, which is the most widely agreed upon scientific theory for how the universe began. The wisps we collect are confirmed to be leftovers, much like the leftovers of the Big Bang we can find in space. However I think it's a little bit deeper than that.
See, the Song of Creation is a literal song - and songs famously use sound waves. I think you can take this two ways - you can take this in the scientific route, which is that strong enough sound waves can cause objects to vibrate. The Song of Creation is just an extension of that idea, it didn't create anything new, but it did weave together the Spiral in its current shape.
However, in alchemy there is a concept called the third Hermetic law. Which is, "Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."
Now, I'm not an Alchemy expert, but this is fascinating to me because, well, it's true! Atoms vibrate, nothing is ever “at rest.”
The Hermetic laws are the basis of a very very complicated philosophical and religious system based on the teachings of a hellenistic god called Hermes Trismegistus. It’s called hermeticism, and has a lot of basis in Alchemy according to my research.
So okay, you're sitting here and you're looking at me and you're going, “So what? The Song of Creation kind of lines up with the third law of some alchemic principle. who cares?”
And to that I say, there is another hermetic law that is visible within the world of the Spiral. And that is the principle of polarity.
The principle of polarity is, "Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled."
Fire and Ice, Storm and Myth, Life and Death. These are all polars. Even with this principal of schools of magic having opposites, there is balance, which has no opposing School. It's a paradox.
You could even say, since the system was created by Bartleby, it's a Divine Paradox.
No I'm, I'm kidding, the Divine Paradox is a completely different concept that I'll get into soon. I want to touch on one more thing.
The Philosopher's Stone is probably one of the most known and important concepts that has come out of alchemy. If you're a Fullmetal Alchemist fan, you're going to know where I'm going with this. and if you're not, what are you doing reading a post about Wizard101? Go witness peak fiction.
This is the symbol of the Philosopher's Stone. The shapes have meaning. The circles represent perfection and the eternal spirit realm - Alchemists believed that the universe was circular. The square represents Earth, and the four elements of matter - you know the answer if you’ve seen Avatar.
Tumblr media
The triangle represents the three alchemical elements, sulfur, representing the soul, mercury, the spirit, and salt, the body. The smaller circle represents the fifth element, which is like… sort of also the spirit, but a different kind. The fifth element was believed to be a substance that would permeate all things and connect everything together.
Now if you look at the schools of magic symbol seen on the Wizard101 website…
There is this.
Tumblr media
Look familiar?
Tumblr media
It should.
Obviously this isn't a one-to-one recreation of the Philosopher's Stone symbol. but it's really, shockingly close. Now, maybe this is because this is just a neat and cool way to arrange your seven classes for your silly little game you made in 2008. But, the elemental schools are on the outside, and the spiritual schools are on the inside. Now the issue here does come with the fact that while the elements are on the outside, and you could argue that represents the Earth, which would line up with the fact the circle on the Philosopher's Stone symbol represented Earth, the spiritual schools and their placement on the inside doesn't 100% seem to line up with how the spirit is portrayed on the Philosopher's Stone symbol, but it's close enough for my observation to hold water, I think.
I think you can make the argument that the spiral seen on the illustration behind the spiritual schools could be your replacement for the circle seen on the Philosopher's Stone symbol.
I couldn't find anything super concrete on what the spiral could possibly symbolize in alchemy - I found a lot of things saying that it represented going from being focused on oneself in their internal world to connecting with the world around you and spiritual ascension. Take this with a grain of salt because I found a lot of spiritual websites, but I couldn't find any historical context for it. Personally, I would say that the spiral symbol, within the context of THE Spiral, would either simply act as more of like how a symbol of Earth would for us here in reality, or as some sort of symbol of binding. even then I would be hesitant to say that because a spiral symbol is seen in all runes that come with the magic schools.
Bear in mind that alchemy was never an exact science and it did seem to be more based on philosophy and stuff. Though it did lead into our understanding of chemistry here in the modern day and was essentially a pre-science, just keep in mind that theories and beliefs varied, if you go out and do your own research you might find information completely different to what I shared.
So the seven schools of magic are at least somewhat based on alchemy - cool. Everyone who's played past Malistare knows that there's a lot more to Wizard101’s magic system.
The next concept that you're introduced to in the game are the astral schools. I could talk about how celestial bodies were important to Alchemy as well, such as how the sun represented the divine spark in man, but as far as I can tell, any connections are loose.
The schools of Sun, Moon, and Star are obviously related to astrology. Now I'm sure all of you here have heard of astrology - It's essentially divination and the belief that stars and celestial bodies can influence human affairs. Celestia is full of astrology references, and even has its own set of star signs, which I could honestly go through and make this video 10 times longer, but I'm not going to for the sake of ease.
We know so little about the astral schools individually that I can't really make any connections at this point in time. Supposedly they're harder to grasp than other schools of magic - and Incredibly powerful, most likely because they draw from forces outside of the Spiral. It’s debatable whether or not the Spiral even has a sun??? Either way, outside of gameplay function, all we really know is that Star magic and Sun magic focus on auras - yourself - and enhancing your spells - external - respectively.
I could then wax poetic about how Sun and Star are essentially the same practice, but that Star has a more introspective approach while Sun has a more physical approach, but that doesn't really tie back to any real world Inspirations so I won't.
I can't really even begin to find anything for Moon Magic. Moon in the game is related to change but polymorphing is, one, kind of useless in normal gameplay, and two, an entirely separate thing from astrology.
So let's move on - to Shadow Magic.
There is a type of psychotherapy(?) called Shadow work, which originates from the concept of a Shadow Self, an idea developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. Jung believed that the Shadow Self was a repressed part of someone's psyche - their unwanted thoughts, emotions, impulses, feelings - pretty much anything they didn't want to outwardly acknowledge, that is what was stored in the Shadow Self.
Your time with Shadow Magic involves you reconciling the Shadows with the light, which is… almost literally the purpose of Shadow work. When you are introduced to Shadow Magic in the game, it is presented to you as simply a spooky evil dark magic that the villain is using. But once you obtain it yourself you start to learn that it's not evil, it's only chaotic.
The first Shadow spell you obtain is related to your school of magic - I, a storm wizard, got the spell Shadow Shrike, a hard hitting transformation that would punish me with severe backlash if I did anything but hit. My questing partner, on the other hand, is an ice wizard, and she received Shadow Sentinel, which wanted her to tank, and only tank.
Narratively, it makes complete sense why Shadow Magic is the way it is. In some respects, it is the result of Grandmother Raven sealing away Grandfather Spider and creating the Spiral the way she did. she repressed him, and she repressed herself by refusing to acknowledge her love for him, after what he did to the first world. In a higherish level narrative sense, this creates a world built on ignoring our problems until they fester to the point where they resurface. With us acknowledging our Shadow and reconciling with it before that point we go against the grain, going against the deities themself, as they forbade it for being too dangerous, and for touching the true essence of the Spiral.
I think we could tie this back to alchemy again.
The other hermetic law, the first law actually, is "The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental."
As I understand it, this means that our thoughts have a profound impact on reality. We can shape reality through our minds - by changing our thoughts the world can change. It’s related to the idea of a collective subconscious - if you’ve played through Arc 3, you know the Spiral has one of those, it’s known as the Reverie.
This is… also kind of the basis for a lot of psychotherapy methods. In the real world this kind of just means “think good thoughts, and you'll feel better, and things won't feel as bad”, which is easier said than done.
However, in the Spiral, that statement is incredibly literal, much more in line with the original way the law was presented. Shadow Magic reacts and has a more intimate relationship with the caster than any other school of magic. you have to fight a creation based on your own fears to access Shadow Magic and use it. If that's not literally the perfect manifestation of this concept, I don’t know what is.
Which segways nicely into another concept I want to talk about - what we are - the Child of Light and Shadow - the Divine Paradox.
There's a lot of things that are seemingly unrelated that talk about the Divine Paradox. One interpretation states that it's about God - such as, if God is able to do anything, can he make a mountain that he can't move? - I saw another interpretation that stated it was that one’s strength is born out of their weakest moments. I think the latter is a very interesting way to read the Divine Paradox moment in game, however the idea of a “Divine Paradox” does have basis in alchemy.
To my understanding, it is an aspect of the law of polarity. Two opposing things will always exist, and so reconciling those two things, combining them into truly one, then must be an act of divinity.
Obviously this is something really weird when you pair this with the concept of Shadow work - if you are the Divine Paradox, an act of divinity made manifest, made so by your relationship with the shadows - does that mean reconciling with the darker parts of yourself and achieving oneness with it is an act only God can do? That’s either incredibly defeatist in the mental health department or this game was accidentally WAY more religious than I thought it was.
Luckily, your relationship with Shadows as a Shadowmancer has very little to do with being the Divine Paradox and much more to do with Bartleby.
Switching mild amounts of gears here…
Bartleby's name comes from a short story about Wall Street - so literally nothing to do with magic or alchemy, or philosophy, or anything helpful. I have no idea why the developers named Bartleby Bartleby. However, Bartleby does resemble, in design and function, Yggdrasil.
Yggdrasil is the world tree from Norse mythology. It is the center of everything and connects the nine worlds - the realm of frost, the realm of fire, the realm of peace and prosperity, the realm of men, the realm of chaos and conflict, the realm of the Vanir, Norse gods associated with magic and fertility, the realm of the elves, who inspired music and the arts, the realm of dark elves, and the realm of the dead, which is part of the realm of frost.
Bartleby not only helped create the Spiral, but it is said that his roots - probably metaphysically - touch all corners of it.
Midgard, the realm of man, is located at the center of the world tree. Wizard City, similarly, is located at the center of the Spiral, with Bartleby right in the middle of it.
Bartleby is the source of all magic - it could be argued that every act of magic, no matter the source it draws from, runs through him. He connects all things in the Spiral.
Thus, we, the players, as his Scion, are the Divine Paradox in the same way he is. He is Myth and Storm as one, he is Fire and Ice burning and freezing together - because he is all magic.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say he is the fifth element, because I really do not think Wizard101 is following the practice of alchemy that closely. (And that has some really weird implications!)
One more thing I want to talk about really quickly, is the symbol associated with Bartleby, and by extension, his Scion.
If you’ve played the Catacombs, you have probably seen these symbols.
Tumblr media
This is known as a triskelion. It’s a real symbol. Within the context of Wizard101, it represents Bartleby, and a type of magic - not school, more like a way of practice - done by his followers, the Treeminders.
Outside of Wizard101, It’s mainly attributed to Celtic religions, but it was used as far back as the Neolithic age. This symbol represents trinities such as life, death, and rebirth. Mainly, it’s seen as a symbol for growth and progression.
The concept of trinities makes sense for Bartleby - he isn’t the only deity within the Spiral. He is the balance between the two extremes of Raven and Spider, and you, as his Scion, are the extension of that idea - as early as arc 2 you were connecting two extremes, and since the beginning you have been uniting differences to create a better world.
I’m not sure how much of this was intended or researched in depth, but either way, this was REALLY fun to research, and I think it’s a pretty neat way to read the Spiral.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Role Exchange AU Resembool - Chapter Five Family Picture
The family got into position. Dante holding Selim and Theo holding William.
Theo had been keeping a stone-face, which wasn't surprising for him. He wondered whether he should smile, to be more in-line with most family pictures. However, he also worried that he wouldn't give a convincing enough smile and it would end up looking weird. This photograph was important to him: it was documented proof of his achievement. Proof of his family. Proof of a normal, human life.
Proof that he was more than a monstrous dwarf in a flask. That he had done it; he had grown into something new. That he could create life. Real life.
Proof that... This photo was going to be proof that he once had a family.
Proof that, for a short time, he was just like every other human.
He wasn't. He knew he was never going to be just like them.
This short little reprieve will pass before the homunculus knows it. As quick as a camera's flash, he will be staring over each and every one of their graves and he will be the same lone homunculus, once more, roaming the world with no purpose.
The homunculus had never once considered his immortality a blessing. However, it had never felt like such a curse as it did now. The connections that he's made with the humans in Resembool, to Holly, to Dante and their sons. He could not bare to part with any one of them. He didn't want to watch his wife and sons die and be forgotten about, as though they weren't even there to begin with. That would tear away whatever little spirit the homunculus had.
It almost feels like Hohe... like he had planned for this, all those years ago, just to add to his cruelty.
He had no desire to keep living any further. If only he could age and die alongside his wife and children, he would do so happily.
"Theo, are you okay?" He heard Dante's voice and was suddenly back in the room.
She sounded concerned. He did a quick scan across the room. William was still in his arms, craning his neck to look up at his father, frowning up at him. The photographer was in the process of packing the equipment away.
Had... had he already taken the photo?
"I apologise. I must have been lost in thought," Theo said, regaining his composure and placing his son down.
Turning to Dante, he saw that her worry hadn't subsided.
"What is it, Dante?"
"You've never... I've never seen you cry before," she said.
Cry?
Sure enough, Theo discovered that two streaks of tears were running down his cheeks.
I wanted to add a little more onto the AU. https://archiveofourown.org/works/10605651/chapters/109986238
The Dwarf in the Flask takes Hohenheim's position, of course. Dante (the "original" Dante from the flashback segment) plays Trisha. Envy is William, playing Edward, and Selim plays Alphonse.

How Did I live?
InThe_Bluz https://archiveofourown.org/works/54922288 by InThe_Bluz When passing through the gate of truth Edward was not expecting to relive his past life, especially his past life where he was the God Leto, the personification of the sun. He lived well over a millennium since the beginning of humankind. He is old and wise, but he fell a long time ago. He is no longer Leto, the angel that flew in the sky, along with the birds and dragons, the kind but just God that gifted humans the gift of life, of plants and animals. Now he is a human with too much knowledge of his once divinity, with knowledge of more alchemy than he could dream of, but also of the knowledge of human greed, their ability to be horrific with one another, to slaughter their own flesh blood in their ignorance. He was once a child who loved his mother and brother, who breathed alchemy like oxygen, who laughed so loud and spoke with yells instead of a soft voice. Who was ignorant of the flames dancing under his skin, of the calls from the sky for him to rejoin the clouds and of the true extent of human arrogance. He is no longer ignorant, he remembers too much, has too much knowledge under his skin, scorching with the flames that once danced but now burns. He wishes he was ignorant again. Can I request a scenario or hc’s of going on an aquarium date with envy? Gn reader pls.
Hi! I love your request, I really like aquariums and sealife myself, but I have never actually attended one, so I hope I did those accurately.
Fullmetal Alchemist Envy Headcanons: Envy x reader going on an aquarium date
I think that Envy would start going actual dates with reader only after a few months into their relationship pass. In the beginning he would enjoy home-dates only, because it feels more intimate and relaxing to him. But soon enough he won't mind going out with reader and showing them off. He would deffinitely have a proud look on hi sface whenever someone looks at reader and sees that they have a partner, and this partner is him.
Envy himself wouldn't have the idea of an aquarium date so reader would probably have to bring that up if they want to go. He would be a little suprised at first because he never even knew aquarium dates excisted, but he would for sure be intrigued and interested in trying out something new.
I think he wouldn't be too excited to look at the sea animals, but would like walking around and looking at them. It would feel quite relaxing to him. He would enjoy it much more than going on a date somewhere loud and crowded.
The highlight of the date for him would be seeing reader admiring the fish, turtles, jellyfish (I am a huge jellyfish lover) and all the other marine animals with a happy look on their face. I see Envy as the one to admire them from afar rather than joining in the fun with them. He enjoys seeing them happy more than anything and if the reason for their happiness are some fishies, so be it! He would come to the aquarium all the time with them just to see thier pretty smile.
He would get butterflies if reader goes up to him to ask him to come with them and check out something they found interesting, with an excited look on their face.
Holding hands with him throughout the date would make him feel special. He needs that love.

📚 January Reading Round-Up 📚
January was a pretty great reading month! Finished a few books I'd started in December, while also binging some new ones.
- Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan (good, very funny and bittersweet, full of detailed and lush descriptions, loved the last part the best, very different than the movie's plot)
- Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher (Delightful, funny, characters were a bit too self-deprecating but it worked nonetheless, all the feels)
- Manacled by Senlinyu (Very good, cried at a lot of parts, not my favourite iteration of this trope but a great addition, loved the fanart, interesting take on Draco Malfoy that I did enjoy)
- Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (Very good, loved the audiobook, funny and smart and heartfelt, MC has ADHD vibes, some cool twists, great intertwined flashback story structure)
- Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Edition Vol. 5 by Hiromu Arakawa (Very good, thankfully some of the scenes didn't hit me as hard as the anime, loved the humour and the art style)
- The Theft of Sunlight by Intisar Khanani (Good, very intense, loved the second half of the book more, great character development and themes)
- A Darkness at the Door by Intisar Khanani (Very very good, binged it in a day, very poetic and lyrical and angry and cathartic, loved the romance and the friendships and the ending)
- Tuyo by Rachel Neumeier (Good, loved the beginning, not quite what I was expecting for the ending, great characters and communication)

Hello. How about headcanons of characters from Legend of Korra (Korra), Demon Slayer (Daki), Fullmetal Alchemist (Lust) and Black Clover (Vanica) having S/O, who constantly insults their enemies while fighting to anger them and force to make mistakes?
Hi Anon! Thank you for your request! Sorry it took so long. I hope you like the headcanons!
Fandoms: Legend of Korra, Demon Slayer, Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Clover
Characters: Korra, Daki, Lust, Vanica x gn! Reader (separate)
Tumblr media
Korra thinks you’re so funny in battle. She loves that you insult your enemies, especially if they insulted you first. She thinks it’s only fair.
She’s not one to hold back from insulting her enemies either, so between the two of you, whoever you're fighting doesn’t stand a chance in either a physical or verbal confrontation.
Korra also thinks your strategy of angering your opponent so that they make mistakes is very clever. She’s usually a “rush in head first, no strategy needed” kind of person so she enjoys seeing how other people fight.
She does however sometimes worry about you angering an enemy to the point that they have no mercy towards you. She wouldn’t want to see you get hurt after all.
Tumblr media
Daki is always giggling when you insult your enemies. Whether your insults are lighthearted, mean spirited, or downright brutal, she’s cheering you on from the sidelines.
Appreciates the strategy you’re using in angering your enemy so they make errors but really, she’s just there to see you insult those who have wronged you.
Due to her childish nature, Daki might act more defenceless and hurt by people's words than she really is just so you’ll defend her. She loves it when you stand up for her, especially when that comes in the form of insulting your enemies.
If you ever take it too far and your opponent begins to show no mercy, Daki may step in. However, she’ll only do this if she’s certain you won’t be able to hold your own. She has faith in your abilities.
Tumblr media
Much like Korra, Lust thinks you’re funny, but more in the sense of thinking an animal is funny when it does something that could be seen as the creature acting like a human. It’s not as if she intentionally thinks that way, it’s simply her nature.
Lust love it when you insult people who have offended her. Sure, she can defend herself, but it’s so much better having someone who cares about you defend your honour by insulting your enemy.
Isn’t worried about you angering an enemy too much. She’s very confident in her powers and will step in to protect you if the need arises.
If for any reason, you ever turn those insults on her, Lust will be torn between being proud and mildly annoyed at you. Sure, it’s fun when you’re insulting other people, but did you really have to say those things to her?
Tumblr media
Honestly, half of the reason Vanica is with you is because she finds you so fun to be around, especially in battle. She’s always looking for new ways to amuse herself and you’re at the top of her list.
She loves going into battle with you since she knows you’ll always have a witty comment or insult ready to throw at your enemies.
Honestly, she’s probably right there with you as well. Vanica’s throwing insults left right and centre. However, while you’re doing it to anger your enemies so they make mistakes, she’s doing it because it’s more fun when everyone’s fighting with all their power.
Won’t really look out for you in battle, only because she has complete faith in your ability to hold your own against any enemy.

The Never Forget series timeline
Because yeah it's getting confusing. This is mainly for my own reference but it’s a list ig
Set in alternative time:
The [As the Gods Will] events that set off the earthquake where time resets at the end.
The [Pandora Hearts] events because it takes place in multiple Mukuro lifetimes.
The [Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle] events take place in many alternative dimensions and timelines. Same thing to the [Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood] installment.
Things that existed even before the earthquake
Demons from Kimetsu no Yaiba
Shizume City from K Project (the worlds both existed, but they were connected via only the Kannagi and Inari back then. Only after the earthquake did the bridge appear)
Secret Dobermen experiments from Cuticle Tantei Inaba
Death City from Soul Eater
Youkai/Ayakashi from Nurarihyon no Mago
Demihumans from Ajin: Demi Human
The Borderlands from Imawa no Kuni no Alice

The Bridge that connects Yuki Yuna wa Yuusha de aru + K Project to Namimori shows up
The Digital World from Digimon
The Tentacle Experiments from Assassination Classroom
Things that were in motion even before the earthquake
PRE-CURSE (Arcobaleno)
Belphegor's part in Nurarihyon no Mago (Primo era)
All Corpse Party events for Viper. (Fuuta, Bluebell, and Mitsuru only enter the place after the earthquake because they are younger, but time also does a flip flop in Heavenly Host.)
POST-CURSE (Arcobaleno)
Takeshi was already a Demon Slayer at this point.
Fon falls into a coma before the earthquake.
Ajin events begin pre-earthquake.
Verde infiltrated the experimental stages of the Wretched Egg.
The Pandora Hearts reincarnators and As the Gods Will survivors are reborn in this world and take their new roles.
The dimension jumpers from FMAB enter at random points in history.
Things that were put in motion (character-wise) only after the earthquake
Existence of the Digital World

Hibari, Shamal, and Irie get sent to the Borderlands
Hayato runs away from his family and goes to Death City
Skull travels to Shizume City

AFTER HIBARI WAKES UP (tentatively 2-4 years after the earthquake)
Demon Slayer canon events
Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de aru climax events

I think another frustrating thing about the season 5 finale as someone who’s been following this show since 2016 is that the very premise of ml—sentimonster adrien aside, though certainly in addition—is that it’s nature was always one of impending angst. it loomed in the underbelly that Adrien and Marinette would be hurt when the truth came out—of their identities, of Gabriel’s, and of Emelie. the premise didn’t leave room for adrien to live happily ever after with the mother who should be dead from her hubris. the show didn’t make us care about Emelie apart from her source of grief for Adrien, and her resurrection feels uncanny and undeserved. the emphasis has always been that, despite the tragedies and hurt, adrien and marinette would always be there for each other and make it through alright. because they are partners. they were not partners in this finale—hell, they aren’t even living in the same reality.
the lesson of human arrogance (fullmetal alchemist style) is a cautionary tale—not a fairy tale. and if this “happy” ending is genuine, and we’re to accept with smiling faces that Lila is the new baddie, Adrien has his mom again, Gabriel is remembered as a hero, and Adrien/Marinette can be together amidst deception, then it’s going to severely misdirect the remainder of the show and miss every beat with which the premise wooed its audience since the beginning.
