Read "Suki, Alone". Liked it in general. But can they please, please hire someone who knows both the show's actual events and how to follow through on a character arc? Because guys. Guys. That comic is not implying about Suki what they meant it to be implying, and all because of literally one line.
So like. From a writer's standpoint:
What they meant to do: show Suki as a community-oriented person who cares for her people, and believes in everyone succeeding together.
As opposed to (spoilers): the thief girl they set her up in contrast with, who's pretty upfront and consistent on primarily looking out for herself. She betrays Suki for one (1) corn chip to improve her own life at the prison, no surprise.
But the problem is: they give Suki an inspirational line to the effect of "we're all working together and we'll all break out together"
You know
The thing she does not do in the show
So if both the show and this comic are canon, then instead of setting up a compare/contrast with the thief girl, they've just set up a comparison. One were Suki is arguably worse, because she's been leading a significant number of prisoners on with her "we'll all fight and win our freedom together!" business, only to straight up cut them out of the escape loop and abandon them, whereas the thief is only leading Suki on in the sense that Suki keeps telling her what it's morally correct to think and confuses snide replies with agreement
My dudes. My fellow writers. You people actually being paid for this. There were so many ways to fix those awful implications against our girl's character, the simplest of which would be to not include that line. Or they could have, you know, made it canon compliant with what actually happens in the show, so that this comic doesn't set Suki up as a betrayer instead of a community builder. Like... just send all her good prison buddies off to other prisons in the wake of the warden finding out they're colluding. Have it timed to be right before the next new prisoners arrive, thus setting it immediately before the Boiling Rock episodes, so Suki didn't have anyone left in the prison she'd want to take with her on a breakout. For bonus points, include a page or two of her and her Kyoshi warriors opening up the cell of one of her prison friends post-war, thus implying she's tracking down and actually fulfilling her promises. Maybe even show her doing the same with thief girl, who was established as being imprisoned on false charges anyway, and also showing that Suki is A) the bigger person, and B) willing to acknowledge her own role in mistakes (because I cannot emphasize enough how much thief girl was not hiding her own priorities, and it was Suki who approached HER with all this, not the girl ever doing anything special to weasel her way in) (this would also open up an opportunity for paralleling Suki's earlier in-comic mistake of not listening to one of her friend's very valid thoughts and feeling, which lead to the girl leaving their island alone pre-canon; a "seeing people as they are, not what you want them to be" moment)
Anyway yeah enjoyable enough for a quick read but another one for the "this can't be canon or the characters are So Much Worse than they were in the actual show" pile
At least Aang didn't promise to murder anyone in this one

I desperately need to see pictures of Danny and Damian enjoying childish things with a caption like "let your inner child heal" or the quote from Jazz's bumper sticker, "have you hugged your inner child today?", or something like that. I need to see them surrounded by squish mallows and a Stitch plushie and watching cartoons and making a pillow fort and stuff like that.

tags by @peony-pearl on this post that got me thinking about how gene yang writes sokka as if he is the ember island players’ portrayal of sokka (down to literally saying “wack a pow”). of course that episode is as much a parody of how the fans interpret these characters as it is an illustration of in-world colonial propaganda (and im sure the targeted audience being situated in the imperial core has nothing to do with that coincidence…) but surely, you’d think that a writer who was hired to write semi-canon paratext would understand the characters better than the fandombrained masses….
it makes me wonder if because sokka “endorsed” his portrayal in the episode, gene yang thinks that sokka “approved” of this play and it thus ought to lend itself to his characterization?? which doesn’t make sense regardless (a tv character should be interpreted on the basis of more than one singular episode), but it’s especially confusing considering that he doesn’t actually think that eip!sokka is an accurate portrayal, but rather that he finds it amusing. toph doesn’t actually think she’s a big buff man, but she isn’t enjoying the play for its fidelity to their experiences.
sokka and suki literally joking about their trauma during intermission should be an indicator of where they’re at regarding this play. while earnest, sensitive, straightforward aang, katara, and zuko take genuine offense at their portrayals, sokka and suki (the ones who wanted to go see the play in the first place) were always aware that this piece of colonial propaganda would be unflattering, and they approach it with a sense of ironic detachment and laugh (for the most part, sokka’s unprocessed yue trauma notwithstanding) at just how offensive and terrible it is.
while aang, katara, and zuko lament their offensive portrayals, sokka and suki sneak backstage so that sokka can suggest more jokes to the actor responsible for portraying him as shallow comic relief. sokka’s goal is to get laughs, not faithful representation, which he knows the fire nation would never actually grant him. the correct takeaway from that episode regarding sokka’s characterization is not that he acts like his actor counterpart in any way, but that he and suki would go to midnight screenings of the room together and throw spoons at the screen. i do think that faith erin hicks understands this. gene yang clearly does not.

Part of what’s so fun about the earliest Tim comics is how he is clearly an outsider with an abnormal amount of information and self-investment. He has spent about 4 years learning things by guesses and intuition and a child’s passionate detective work, all without ever actually talking to anyone directly. He thinks he knows…but he doesn’t.
He knows their identities, he’s super passionate about what those identities symbolize, he knows their addresses and a creepy amount about their schedules and associates. He knows the stories he’s found in newspapers and on tv or that he’s seen himself. He remembers meeting Dick, and seeing Batman, and he’s seen them again many times since, from a distance or in photos/videos. But he doesn’t know anything else! And most importantly, he doesn’t know them personally in the way he’ll end up knowing them over time.
He didn’t actually know where their base was until Dick showed him the Batcave! He’d never actually met Alfred despite knowing his name! He knew the places Dick lived in New York but he didn’t know the messy situation that led to Dick moving out of Kory’s apartment! He essentially studied Batman and Robin for years and yet still, he has to badger Dick for more information on the history of Robin because Tim was a child and not there during that history, no matter how much of a Robin fan he was.
His only clues as to how to navigate their emotions and personalities is based on guessing how they might react, he doesn’t have the experiential framework to actually know. He assumes Dick will be upset to hear Tim talk about his parents dying, so he avoids bringing it up and apologizes when he does. And he’s not wrong, Dick is a bit upset to talk about it, but Tim doesn’t actually know the feelings Dick has on it or how he’d handle those feelings. (He probably doesn’t know Dick has been going to therapy.)
And Tim initially assumes Dick must take on the Robin mantle and support Batman, completely unaware of exactly how complicated and unfitting and bad that is for Dick at this point. To Tim, Dick is his Robin! Of course he is the perfect person to fulfill the role of Robin. But to Dick, he has set Robin aside, he has been building independence from Bruce as he grapples with the ways Bruce treated him over the years. He has already become someone new and cannot return to what is, for him, his child self. Tim doesn’t see this! He knows the fun facts but he doesn’t know anything beyond that! (Until later.)
(Tim knows about Jason, but he does not know Jason. He had never met him. And yet he spends the next several years until Jason’s return telling Dick that he thinks about Jason and what it means to be the third Robin every day. Jason might as well be fiction to him, existing in his mind, in legends, and in the ripples he left behind.)

As someone who follows Jeremy Adams' press, it's clear that he was bothered and upset by the number of people saying Hal was being a creepy weirdo to Carol in the first few issues of GL 2023. even the older white male fans were like, "this is uncomfortable".
it's one of Many Many things that's made me doubt the competency of DC editorial (understatement of the century i know). Someone should have clocked this in the scripting phase. and I'm disappointed with the overall storyline in the comic. it looks like they're leaving behind the "Hal adjusting to life on earth" idea AND the psychology of Hal creating kilowog with his ring. DC has also famously fired more than half of their editors in the last 5-6 years.
but back to Adams - it must be difficult for him to receive that feedback, especially since he's said he behaved similarly with women he's dated. no one likes being misunderstood, and they definitely don't want to hear that they've acted like a creepy weirdo.
which explains the OOC Barry dialogue in GL 2023 #4. it's a sorry sight.
Tumblr media
as readers, we're supposed to think, "If Barry Allen is saying it, of course it's okay!!"
fwiw i am all for a "you're single until you're married" mentality, but Barry definitely would not be lmao. and i cant even get into how gross this is towards Carol. what about what she wants?? barry is a lot of things, but he's consistently not misogynistic.
sidenote - you are not writing hal & barry well if they're not coming off as more than a little in love with each other. hal needs to randomly say the most romantic thing you've ever read or else it's not a successful team-up. and adams co-wrote that lego flash movie where barry keeps a photo of him and hal on his nightstand. so now we all know to thank the other guy i guess
i would have been all for adams bringing back a more silver age hal, which i thought was the intention. but leave the sexism where it's at. bring back more silly scifi plots or hal getting knocked out or ITTY!
and if for some reason you intended for hal to act like a misogynist, it could have been interesting to watch him deal with the changing social customs since he's been off-world for so many years. but i doubt anyone working on the comic would be able to give that storyline the depth it deserves. anyway

I think Huntress: Crossbow At Crossroads is one of my least favourite Helena comics, but at least the different looks they gave her serve, especially the biker outfit
Also this amazing panel of her having a wolf stare that can scare away dogs

Someone wanna tell me why my limp thin wet rat hair, which constantly gives me reasons to despair no matter how much work I put into it, only ever has volume after exercise (+and a lil bit of powdered organic dry shampoo for the grease). Like. How do I go from stringy rat to dora the explorer. Surely there is an achievable inbetween.

I saw a post about swim forms and got the idea to sketch this really quickly
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callie: "Aw! They're so cute together!" Eight: "Like that you should carry me."
Tumblr media
Agent 3: "You're too heavy! I'm setting you down!" Eight: "I not am weight that much!"
Tumblr media
Marie: "To be fair... we weigh just as much in swim form as we do walking form."
This was a quick sketch. Had more ideas for it, but I am tired today and cannot draw the double quantity of panels my original idea required, haha. I hope you can at least enjoy what I did make.

society if dc hired a writing team of colour who could acknowledge the racial coding of starfire & raven, explore vic's status as a Black man in modern america who's specific disability further means his body is going to be read a certain way by certain people no matter what he does, along with potentially finding a way to sort through the racisim + fetishization that went into prior depictions of dick's heritage:

[ID: four page comic of the owl house. Page 1: Eda walks past Luz, Gus and Willow, who're sat on the floor of the owl house around a box labeled "Eda's Music". Eda notices them and peeks around the corner asking "uh, hey kid- whatcha doin?". Luz says "oh hey Eda!".
Page 2: Luz says "we were just going through all your old human music!" While holding a CD case. She continues "I've been getting nostalgic listening to some old latin pop CDs, like what my mom used to play around the house! (You have a surprising amount of merengue music btw)". Gus sheds a single tear and says "I've sampled human music before but, wow, just, wow! The technique...the inspiration...Carly Rae Jepsen is a genius". Willow looks to the side and says "and I've been listening to your old breakup mixtapes!".
Page 3: Eda looks at her blankly before saying "my what?". Willow says- "your breakup music! There's a whole box of it. I'm pretty over it now but back in the day...when Amity stopped hanging out with me...it hit me hard. I kinda had a phase of only listening to angsty breakup songs for like...a month. Maybe more. It's kinda sad in retrospect".
In the background we can see a flashback of young willow sobbing in bed while summoning vines to cover photos of her and Amity on her wall. Willow continues "things are a lot better now don't get me wrong...but I still listen to that playlist every once in a while when I need a release". Eda contemplates, then grimaces, remembering breakup with Raine (who's pictured saying "it's over, eda").
Page 4: Eda looks at Willow. She eventually says "wanna trade?" And Willow looks up. Final panel shows Luz standing in the doorway concerned as she looks at Willow and Eda. willow is kneeling in front of a casette player and headphones with a shadowy expression and Eda is in the family guy death post with a phone and headphone wire next to her. Both have annotations- Willow's says "got One of Us by ABBA" and Eda's is "got Nightshift by Lucy Dacus". Luz says "you guys good?". End ID]
*slides my Eda and Willow trade angsty breakup songs on s2A hc across the table*
#the owl house#willow park#eda clawthorne#luz noceda#gus porter#(i know he's essentially a cameo in this but he has a speaking role at least i feel justified tagging him)#raeda#not really intended as amillow? more abt the experience of taking a friendship breakup hard but lacking the language to describe it#but can be interpreted as amillow if you want#anyway. every stage of this comic kicked my ass and tbh it's not my favorite but it got me drawing again and that's good#i still think the idea is funny part of me is just like. actually we can do better lets take it from the top#which is deranged bc I've already spent like 2-ish weeks on this i am not looking at this for another second#do i think enjoying angsty breakup music is wholly in character for willow? im not sure. she doesn't like dwelling on the negative#BUT like. i think you can make the argument she'd enjoy it in private. she represses a lot of feelings she needs some kind of outlet#and this is s2A in my mind (post eclipse lake where willow and Gus want to check out more human music)#so i feel like I can justify her talking about her angsty guilty pleasure to eda#also like. bby willow is DEVASTATED in the understanding willow flashbacks. maybe older willow tries to ignore things#but for at least a few months it was probably a big struggle for her coming to terms w/ why amity stopped hanging out w/ her#anyway i don't want to look at this anymore. have at thee!#i have 2 (two) more comics thumbnailed and one of them is shorter/funnier but the other one is a hc I really like#so currently a toss up between which one gets done next#it's half past midnight and i don't wanna stay awake until 2 am again so I'll probably just leave this lurk for a bit and then sleep#i hate the way this is formatted (the images are SO SMALL ON MOBILE) but i don't want this post to be more vertical than it is
