Fran is a big friendly stray dog sam found one day and no one knows what breed she is. every time you ask someone what they think they say something different. She's very intelligent though and almost acts like a little person. Sam will talk to her like a person and she seems to listen and even understand. She became an esa when his mental health took a decline. She calmed him down after nightmares. sam didn't even have to train her to stop him from scratching at his arms after the egg she just started doing it. She grounds him after long days at the prison the fog of being the warden is too hard to break out of himself. She really does take care of him as much as he takes care of her. The bond they have is unbreakable...

If you asked him what he'd choose to save between Fran and the prison, he'd be offended that you even asked.

He never answers though, because the truth, deep down, horrifies him.

the tragedy of franziska von karma is that she is franziska von karma, and yet she does not know what that means, even now. even now, when she has spent her whole life trying to prove herself worthy of the von karma name, when the simple fact that she was born with it should be enough. she loses her first case and refuses to accept it, goes back to germany and wins several more cases and calls it "extending my perfect win record" while speaking to the very man who destroyed that record. she is in complete denial, because if she is not perfect then she cannot be franziska von karma, and if she is not franziska von karma, who is she? she has built her entire identity around the von karmic perfection that even her own father, the original von karma, could not attain in the end. she really doesn't know who she is, deep down.

and that's why she calls everyone by their full names all the time. she assumes everyone considers their family name and legacy as important as she does, and miles is the only person in the entire world who calls her "franziska", plain and simple, no von karma on the end. to him and only him, she is not a ruthless prosecuting prodigy who strikes terror into the hearts of all who see her, she is just his big sister, the only one who was truly with him during his von karma years. "you can't understand what it's like to be manfred von karma's daughter," she screams at him, not realizing that she was never his daughter, not really, just an heir, and even if he really had been any sort of father to her, would she understand just what "manfred von karma's daughter" is? maybe she does, and she ignores it, because if she acknowledges it, she'll be forced to come to terms with the fact that she's not it. how isolating it must be- if your brother, the one who knows you best in all the world, doesn't understand you, how can you hope to understand yourself?

after being trapped over the egg, which was one of the most traumatizing experiences of sam’s life, he dragged himself home with tommy and puffy bouncing around him and talking loudly in a way that hurt his ears and when he made it back to his base he crawled into the little space in his wall left for fran and sat on the floor with his face buried in her fur and just stayed that way for hours

i saw a dead cormorant on my walk home today. either crested or neotropic. (mind you, this is in a suburban texas neighborhood. very odd find.)

the poor baby was laying on its belly with its beak in the mud. i came back with gloves, and i stroked it, told it i was sorry, saw its little webbed feet, and looked into it’s dead, sunken eyes. i’ve dreamed of petting a non-parrot bird, especially a larger bird, for a while. i knew i never could, due to their nature, but i still dreamed. today i did. it was soft. it hurts that i only got to pet it in it’s death. i guess it’s better that way, though. the poor bird wasn’t stressed by my presence, and i still got to meet it up close.

then i went to micheal’s and bought art supplies. i am so sorry little cormorant, i will honor you, i promise. you are my favorite, sweet bird.
