As somebody who really enjoys cartoon saloon, I find myself looking for similar content all the time. I'm certain I'm not the only one who does this so I figured i would compile a list of content that scratches the same itch as cartoon saloon's itish folklore movies

So here we go!!!!

1. The Daughters of Ys

Media type: graphic novel

About: The daughters of Ys is a graphic novel vatiation of a Brenton folktale. The art, story, and writing are gorgeous, and this is my top pick for similar content. I would sell my soul to get this animated.

Content warnings: nudity, implied sex, violence, murder

2. The Moorchild

Media type: novel

About: The Moorchild is a piece of children's fiction about a half-folk half-human, changeling girl. Despite being a children's book, it's one of my favorite pces of prouse. The story is engaging (even the second time around) and is better than most adult fiction I've read. Audiobook versions are available, too.

Content warnings: none

3. The Last Unicorn

Media type(s): Novel, graphic novel, animated movie

About: The Last Unicorn is a classic novel with an animated movie and comic adaptations. The 2d animated movie was released in 1982 by the Rankin/bass company. The film itself is whimsical. The animation is impeccable and is worth the watch for that alone. Also, they twinkified Prince Lir, hes so hot, oml.

There are several graphic novels from what I've seen. Each of them are just as good as the movie, but they tend to contain more of the world building.

The novel is worth the read even if you've seen the movie already. The lore and worldbuilding are so tasty, and there's so much cut out of the story cut out for the movie and graphic novel. Audiobook versions are available, too.

The fact that butched tongue is the least listened to song on unreal unearth is very telling.

#this and jackboot jump have the least amount of listens #and they are some of the most overtly anti-fascist anti-colonist anti-genocidal songs in his discography #and the fact that they are his least popular is not only criminal because they are such good songs #but also highlights that as a fanbase we are both notorious for overlooking his activism and protest and seeing him only as fae bog man #but also that we are uncomfortable with these concepts as a whole and are therefore not as progressive as we'd like to believe #hozier #unreal unearth

Fae? Or any other creature? They’re vindictive. Vindictive to a fault. And loyal. They don’t give away their love easily. Yeah, they can feel fond of things. Even like them. But love? Familial or otherwise? That’s sacred to them. More so to Dick, who already had to suffer losing his family once. So this? Yeah, he’s not having it.

But oh, if you think Joker’s just gonna get killed off then you’re so, so wrong. There are so many other ways, better ways, to make a human suffer. Worse things than death. Worse things than any kind of torture humans could come up with.

Dick makes Joker pay. Every second Jason had to spend with that madman is amplified tenfold, stretched into eternity. Dick traps him in a nightmare he will never wake up from. By the time he’s done with Joker, there won’t be an ounce of that monster left inside that sick little brain. There won’t be anything left of the joker.

By the time Dick allows the creatures to eat Joker alive, the man’s been begging for death for what translate to several centuries to the human mind.

I've always liked the idea that the clans carve to preserve their history, while the tribe paints

So what about the kittypets?

They sing.

They see their twolegs going around the home, making rythmic noises while they work, so the cats copy.

Kittypets sing about their pasts, about life. They sing to each other and to strangers. They sing about everything. They sing about nothing. Some songs have words, others are just noise. Some songs are long, some are short. Some have been passed down for ages, others made up on the spot.

The clans hear them. They hear those songs, echoing from the twoleg place. Some are tempted to join in, but are prevented. Warned.

Oh my god easy, "In The Woods Somewhere". That's Liebling's telling of König. The fairytale of getting lost and stumbling upon something you never should have known. But this verse specifically is König:

I clutched my life

And wished it kept

My dearest love, I'm not done yet

That's König's dedication to Liebling, his promise not to leave her, to keep her. He's not done with her(and he never will be).

For more romantic pretension I would say.... "like real people do" probably

There's just! The way neither of them are quite what the other is, but they share a kinship. Leibling is burying the kindest parts of herself in the dirt, and accidentally pulls König free. And I think for Liebling there's this feeling that she isn't quite human, that being a seer puts her outside of humanity but it also doesn't put her with the fae.

"We should just kiss like real people do" because neither of them is quite sure what they are, but they know they're not real people. Not because they aren't real but because there's a wall between each of them and the world.

I knew that look dear

Eyes always seeking

Was there in someone

That dug long ago

So I will not ask you

Why you were creeping

In some sad way I already know

The affection that König holds for Liebling comes from a place of understanding. He knows the look in her eyes, the way they never stop moving, never stop seeking out what she sees. He's seen seers before, long ago laying offerings out for him before he was buried. So he won't ask her what she's looking for, he won't ask her what she's burying or why.

"In some sad way I already know" because he knows Liebling! He knows her sadness and her suffering as intimately as he knows his own. He knows her because he loves her. They can be real people together, they can know each other in ways that the world doesn't.

They won't ask for the past, they won't ask where each other came from. Because it doesn't matter to them. They're behind the curtains together, and they're happy for it. The past only matters in how it affects the present, and in the present they have each other. König and Liebling build their future on the bones they've buried, and neither of them have a desire to dig them up. They're kissing, like real people do.

Firestar is all fur bristled and a few shadowclan previous rogues are as well as Firestar explains that they're signalling and permanently marking their victory over Tigerstar along with humiliating him as he journeys to the afterlife, and then claiming what was his as there's by right of combat and a broken promise, they want the riverclan and shadowclan territory!

Sandstorm: why would they think a song could do that?

Firestar: it's so everyone is aware of it, you can't lie about your loss and try to convince cats you were wrongfully stolen from or you never made a promise, if Tigerstar could still sing a counter then cats would stay away from the conflict because its not settled, but without Tigerstar, all cats who recognize the song will acknowledge that the territory is now Bloodclan's and pass that information on unless they also want to challenge for it. It's basically a thorough scent marking through noise instead of scent

Leopardstar, eyes narrowed: Teach me how to sing Firestar, this claim cannot be allowed to settle, we cannot let this bloodclan think they have any right to our territories!

Firestar: I...alright, follow my lead.

catastrophically, actually 😭

Fae!Dick would take one look at Talon!Dick and know. Know he’s unnatural. Wrong. Not in the way fae!dick is wrong, but something… something isn’t right with him. Somehow there’s an air of nothing about him. Like the world tries to shrink away from talon!dick, like the absolute absence of natural life.

He knows this version of himself got twisted from something human to something that is human-adjacent only in the vaguest sense of the word.

And he doesn’t like it.

Talon!dick would have a similar epiphany, but more in a “this guy is dangerous” sense. Dangerous enough to be a threat to them all. To Jason.

And… well, we all know talon!dick doesn’t take kindly to that last part lol.

I think they’d end up attacking each other because they perceive the other as a THREAT (all in caps). And it would take Talon!Dick’s Jason to stop it and at least one of fae!dick’s family.
