Im learning about félix gonzález-torres for an art project and it is so sad. his one true love (ross laycock) died of AIDS and then félix dedicated so much of his to him saying that his art was for an audience of one: ross D: félix died a few years later from AIDS too they didnt deserve to die so young. them and their cats and dog should have lived together for so much longer. i fucking love abstract art that when you first look at it you go "what?" and then you learn the meaning behind it and it tears your heart to absolute shreds. i don't know much about art, but if it can bring me to tears, i don't see how it could be considered "not art". i don't care if "[you] could do that" would you? and if you did would it mean anything? you could physically do it sure, but will you? is your heart in it? could you even grasp the depth of feeling the artist is expressing?

The two clocks are each 13 1/2 in (34.29 cm) diameter, and the piece is held by the Museum of Modern Art, although currently off display.

"The Lovers" is a piece by British artist Sneha Solanki which consists of two networked machines, one infected with a virus, slowly infecting the other through the interface of classic romantic poetry.)

People's reaction to modern and contemporary art is (usually) a good litmus test for their media literacy. How do you completely remove the concept + context from a piece of art just because you don't understand it at face value? Do they not realize that art evokes emotion, which includes the anger they express in their Instagram comment?

The idea that the only values of art are complexity and the objective skill of the artist is beyond reductive. It's ignorant and it makes you looks like a smug asshole when you look at Félix González-Torres' "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) and say "it's just a pile of candy on the floor."

I fucking dare you to tell me that Marvel & Kith's advertisement for X-Men sneakers is exactly the same as González-Torres' tribute to his dead partner.

The same people who say "that's not art, I could make that with my eyes closed" type "ending explained" into YouTube immediately after finishing a movie. They sound like Paul Joseph Watson screaming "IT'S JUST A URINAL!!"

You don't have to like or enjoy every single piece of art you see, but you should never strip them from their meaning or their impact.
