Oblivious hypocrisy?

This post is about supposed hypocrisy within Tsukasa. Theory.

To start off, let’s go over his general beliefs that have been shown throughout the manga since day one.

Tsukasa belives supernatural and humans should be whoever they want to be, they should be together if they desire to. And if that’s enough to end the world, then it’s a done deal.

I find it interesting, out of everything that interesting about Tsukasa, that he thinks people should get whatever they desire. Within reason, authenticity, and if they’re willing to pay the price. With those things, it really doesn’t matter what your wish is, or who you hurt to get it. He’ll forgive everything.

No.1: He wants people to have whatever wish they want, whatever desire they have.

This really plays into his part on Sakura’s team as well, as her assistant. She’s selfish for wanting to wipe out everyone, every living/existing being just so she could go ‘outside’ and be free. But that’s what she wants, and she’s sure she’s truthful about it, that she’s truly happy.

So in Tsukasa’s eyes, that’s ok.

No.2 is: That he believes wishes and desires and wants are endless.

A human, a supernatural, existing beings don’t stop wanting. They’re always going to want something, we are always going to have desires and wishes.

He’s known this ever since he was 4 years old, when he got trapped in the Red House. In the Red House, we can see that Kou got put through many trials of his wants projecting at him. And they didn’t stop until they got to Nene and he refused all of them.

They are even things he didn’t even realized he wanted.

That’s because they’re coming from the heart, where the authenticity lies.

Tsukasa has seen person from person walk into the house wanting their wishes to come true. He knows how this works. A wish for a price, no matter how many wishes there are, they’ll have to be payed for.

But there is no end it, no boundaries to what they can wish and what they can’t. As long as it comes from the heart, maybe even portrays in front of them like with Kou.

So, two clear beliefs. People should have whatever they want, beings don’t stop wishing.

Now let’s see how those two things are shown by Tsukasa himself. Let’s see if he fits his own expectations.

Tsukasa replies with a chapter long explanation on why and how his wish already got granted.

Kou asks Tsukasa what his wish is, why hasn’t his wishes been projected like his has. Tsukasa says he had no other wishes then what he’s already got granted, with the cost of sacrificing himself, and having to stay in the Red House.

He has no other wishes, supposedly. By his own words. He’s saying he’s never wanted anything more, he’s never even thought of anything more.

To Tsukasa, he really just hasn’t thought of anything more, what more could he possibly want.

Being in the Red House for so long, having to see people come to get a wish granted with their prices as well. He’s been busy peering into other people’s wants and desires. Almost noisily, as this has become his new interest, fixation. Wishes, wants, desires. Impulses, and inclinations too.

But he’s so busy with that, he can’t even think to peer into himself. Figure himself out.

You could think this was his only want, but then we see later that that’s incorrect.

Tsukasa says he knew how to get back home, he just didn’t go because he thought it was for the best. He mentions ‘holding back’, which just brings me back to the whole concept of that in TBHK, and Tsukasa’s obvious interest in it.

So I find it wondrous how he’s saying he himself stopped holding back at some point.

Stopped holding himself back from being with the people he loves most, with Amane and his parents. Now just acknowledging that he’s had the desire to go back. And he even invites the Red House Darkness ( Is that what we’re calling it? ) to come with him.

Though, despite him letting go of his swear of not wanting more, this isn’t reaching his expectations at all. This was, for all we now, one occurrence.

Supernaturals and humans should be however they want to be? Has he ever abstained that from himself?

He’s always wanting people like Mitsuba, Shijima, Sakura, Amane to embrace their aspirations, no matter how selfish or fantastical they may be. He’s always pestering about wishes, this and that, to whoever.

But, he’s never once thought about himself, has he? Just once? It seems so, cause currently ( In the chapter 110 ), here he goes again. Trying to make two wishes come true, Sakura and Amane’s both. At the same time.

And something I’ve also noticed about him is that, he may be truthful, but there are times where he isn’t willing to share. I can point out occasions, but I think this is implying more.

He can shy away from things, questions, topics. Involving his own feelings? Like his feelings about thunder?

He can get quiet, wide eyed, looking everywhere else?

Well, that’s ironic, giving he always wants to know the feelings of others.

Amane, grabbing his face, trying to see his expression, because I think to Tsukasa that’s a way to read people. Just through the face they’re making? Hmm..

With Sakura too, like shown in the other imagine above.

Mitsuba as well.

But.. Then he hides his face when it comes to some situations? I wonder.

That exes all of his beliefs/expectations out.

He doesn’t even make it close to meeting them.

Tsukasa’s all too selfless, and with his overbearing appeal to wishes, wants, desires, selfishness, aspirations, etc etc. It clouds his brain from focusing on nothing more than other’s.

And I’m always so confused when people call him selfish. They may be thinking of his twin. Their almost complete opposites, after all.

I feel like this shows a sort of oblivious hypocritical behavior. His behavior contrasts his beliefs and feelings.

I don’t think anyone would have took him for the hypocrite. Even though I don’t think he himself even has a clue.

What Makes a Yorishiro?

Well wouldn't you like to know...

But no, really, what DOES make a yorishiro? I thought I knew at first, but recently, I've started thinking my definition is a little... off.

So I wanted to revisit yorishiro in this post, and review the explanations AidaIro has given us within the context of JSHK! Please, join me, as I barrage you with screencaps you have probably seen a hundred times. ☆ミ

Our first introduction to yorishiro is Hanako in Ch. 6, where he explains that the divine yorishiro are like batteries to the school mysteries. If you get rid of them, they power down! Easy to understand.

He also makes mention of the fact that this yorishiro should be located in the innermost reaches of Yako's boundary. Obviously, the best offense is a good defense, so keeping your yorishiro in the safest, least accessible part of your boundary is a no-brainer. Still worth mentioning, though.

Finally, Hanako states that it's something that "has the most value" to No. 2, and something that "means a lot to her." These are very positive connotations. Nene then equates this to the scissors Yako received from Misaki, a token from her first love.

Much later, Tsuchigomori explains to Yashiro that yorishiro are objects with the strongest feelings connected to them. This is veeery interesting, because this is vague enough that it could mean any type of feeling.

A page later, Tsuchigomori says that the reason the moon rock is his yorishiro is because Amane changing his future surprised him. So it seems like the primary emotion behind this yorishiro could have been surprise. However, considering Tsuchigomori cared a lot for Amane, it's hard to say it didn't also come from a place of love.

...anyways I am skipping No. 3 because it doesn't matter yet...

Briefly touching upon Shijima Mei, it makes sense why the sketchbook is her yorishiro. It's a memento from her creator, and the place she originally sprung to life. I can't say exactly what emotion or feeling could be tied to it, but all that matters is that it's obvious she cares deeply for the original Shijima Mei.

Mei even says so herself!

Very touching.

And now, we are finally getting to the reason I made this post!!

THIS HOT MESS

See, in Ch. 94, Hakubo makes it clear that he is not able to feel love in a traditional sense. It is, apparently, too foreign an emotion for a demon, and even more so for a demon that lacks desire like he does. So naturally, he eats her.

The thing about Sumire is, I think she woke up that desire within him. This is the closest thing to love he can feel, but he can never truly love her as he is. Not in the right way.

A bit tragically, Sumire actually directly quotes Tsuchigomori's quote from the 4 PM Bookstacks, which is that a yorishiro is an object that the school mystery has the strongest emotional attachment to. Ignoring the fact she is literally calling herself an object, she interprets this as him returning her same feelings. Oh, my poor girl...

Still, No. 6 is a school mystery, and his connection to Sumire is the most powerful emotion he has ever felt. He even openly admits he would fall in love with her if he was human, proving this is just a demon’s version of “love.”

Thus, in the end, I would say that every yorishiro so far has had a theme of love behind it. And isn't that sweet? Isn't love the strongest emotion of all? Love is always said to overcome every odd, isn't it?

But what about loss? Can we not say that these yorishiro didn't emerge from feelings of anguish? After all, the loss of a loved one is so powerful,

it can even take another's life.

How sad.

...The thing about Tsukasa and Amane is, I can't say what the primary emotion behind him being his yorishiro is. Amane is all over the place when he comes to Tsukasa.

One emotion I see is fear.

Not necessarily of Tsukasa himself, but what Tsukasa reminds Amane of. Of what Amane became. Out of control, and capable of taking the life of his own brother. He is his own brother's murderer, and it terrifies him.

His greatest fear in the Hell of Mirrors is his brother's dead body, after all. A reminder of what Amane really sees himself as: a killer.

But one could also say guilt is a powerful emotion for Amane. Not only did he commit murder, a crime, but he did it towards his own flesh and blood. His little brother. As the elder sibling, it was his duty to protect him, not kill him.

Tsukasa even uses this against him, being shown to manipulate Amane's feelings about murdering him for his own purposes.

But would guilt really be enough? What about sorrow?

I already alluded to Amane taking his own life shortly after killing his brother, but he was also very close to his brother as a young child, and at least up until they entered middle school.

The loss of anyone in your life can hurt, no matter who they are. What makes it most painful, though, is that they’re close to you. Dear to you. Loved by you.

A loved one dying is terrifying.

The guilt is overwhelming.

You’re filled with unbearable sorrow.

Because you love them.

I must admit, while originally typing up this post, I wanted to end it on a theory that maybe a yorishiro doesn’t have to be selected out of a feeling of love. And I think that can still be true; Hakubo’s feelings towards Sumire aren’t true love, after all, and Tsuchigomori’s feelings towards the moon rock could just be simple surprise.

Even so, I can’t believe that Amane doesn’t truly care for Tsukasa, or that love is not the driving force behind his emotional attachment to him. It is a toxic love, for sure, and one that brings him intense pain and sorrow, but one he cannot help but feel. I only hope that they may one day mend things between them.

Anyways, thank you for reading all the way to the end! I’ve been wanting to make a few other posts lately, so hopefully I can get those out soon.

Im going through all the dogs in my head and yeah it all lines up pretty well-

First of all, Neotony is defined as "retention of some larval or immature characters in adulthood" it is also known as juvenilization because the idea is that these traits are only seen in juvenile members of the species. Humans can experience neotony but we specifically bred dogs to have neotenized traits. Second: Not a biologist...at all! Just some guy who knows too many animal facts! Plus I'm using this concept in loose metaphorical terms. Neotony is usually connected to physical traits but it does show up mentally in ways such as decreased aggression.

Anyways the Big Ones:

Haruka: ...Okay do I need to explain this one? Haruka both wants to return back to being a "child" where he was loved and cared for and hates the "weak" parts of himself. When he killed dogs he, in the process, destroyed the idea that he could "be a child again."

(Note: Haruka also kills a Cat which...Cat=Sin fans we stay Winning!) John: John is a "dog's name" and has refereed to himself as a "newborn" and wishes he wasn't "born" Once again connecting being a dog to being a "child," plus there's also the children noises in Double.

(Note: Tsuwmya has covered over Here ideas of age and maturity in relation to milgram characters and for Mikoto she put them down as "an adult that wants to become an adult" talking about how he has a lack of control in his life and even though he wants to be an adult and taken seriously by the people around him, he isn't. Go read the post its good) Kotoko: Notably Kotoko has Wolves and not Dogs, the non-domesticated, non-juvenilized version of dogs. However Kotoko herself has a lot of child-related imagery and concepts. Her name is written with the kanji for "child" she has a connection to Little Red Riding Hood and tells Amane that she was "the way she is now by her age" not growing or changing past being twelve. Tsuwmya's post actually covers it really well how she's an child stuck as an adult forced to be a child.

Other various details: Amane (I GOT HER IN!) has a dog Magic.

Notably unlike the cream cat (which is collared) and Her Cat (which well...dies and is also a representation of her and her sin) the bunny and the dog are uncollared (domesticated without the need of something to control them)

Magic is notably child-like in it's art direction too.

Mahiru:

Admittedly this one alluded me but Tsuwmya's post strikes again! Mahiru is an adult stuck as a child! The dog isn't too relevant to her but ay it works with my point! Would also like to mention the line that goes over here is:

We fought sometimes, I was happy to get hurt

So that's interesting.

Kazui: Family dog that is At His Parents House. Kazui has a notably bad relationship with his family and doesn't want to be an adult and deal with adult responsibilities. Yet he doesn't Really want to be a child because that means doing what his Parents want him to do and having the pressure on him.

Note again: We caused the Neotony in dogs! Each character's "childishness" can be traced back to something. Haruka was neglcted and abused, Mikoto is overworked and disrespected, Kotoko presumably had something in her past, Amane...I will talk forever if I say hers so I wont, Mahiru was sheltered, Kazui is trapped in the pressures of society.

So yeah...I think someone on the Milgram team must Really like Animals.

Isn't it funny how Amane doesn't even try to cover his wounds?

He doesn't even cover them with his school jacket (maybe it was too hot, maybe he was asked not to cover them, but then, we have the thought that it's Tsukasa who does it, and personally, I feel like 'asking not covering them' does not match the fragments of his personality that he has given us [at least in a supernatural state and the Perfect Painting arc, we still don't know what the twins were like before they were what they are now].

(And, if I'm being honest, I think that asking not to cover marks made by oneself is consistent with amane. His possessiveness, his jealousy, his annoyance at seeing that someone he loves has his attention on something else. Like a dog, you have to mark territory ( in a joke, by the way, it's fun to see hanako upset because black cannon steals yashiro's dreams)

Does it bother him that Tsuchigomori meddles in his affairs or does it bother him that he covers and heals his wounds?

It's as if he were showing them, displaying them before everyone's eyes. He forgives those who provoke him, but why? What did he do to deserve it? or what he didn't do.

I repeat, he doesn't cover them at all, he doesn't wear bandages until tsuchigomori does it and it's almost reluctantly. Adding that, when moving from his seat, the bandages loosen: did Amane loosen them by playing with them or did Tsuchigomori not tighten them correctly (he is a ghost, maybe he is not used to cleaning and covering wounds, he is a teacher not a nurse)?

Anyway, when do you think the wounds start? Correct me if I'm wrong but in the little memories we have of Amane and the Great Clock I don't see Amane with injuries. Does that mean they started after the Festival? Does the accident at the Festival have to do with her injuries? Are they a consequence of what happened or is it just a coincidence?

Perhaps that is why he forgives the author of the wounds, because he believes that he deserves it. Maybe they bullied him at school and blamed him for what happened at the Festival. Maybe that's why he doesn't cover them, because he believes he deserves it.

Or maybe he discovered or suspected what was inside his brother and Tsukasa stopped hiding (in case he did, in case Amane never knew until they grew up) the thing inside him and started showing more of it. deep down the consequences of allowing something non-human to live in your body, as you mentioned, hunger.

When Nene finds him hiding in the closet, Amane looks dejected, scared, afraid. He seemed terrified that they'd found him, even though it's clearly not his attacker who did it, but they found his hideout so he runs away (home? To a new part of the academy?)

I also think so much about how he stayed late at school, it was already night, the moon was already set and very visible. Was the danger at home? So maybe Tsukasa was the author of his injuries.

And his parents, who as children were attentive to them and loving, what happened? Dad wasn't home as much anymore and Mom wasn't paying attention? Either they were both ignoring their son's injuries or not paying proper attention.

They are more ramblings than anything specific but it occurred to me suddenly and I am interested in your point of view, I loved your post about his brother's injuries and the hunger of the supernatural.

This is too much for me to think about this, even more deeply. It's not that it's uncomfortable for me, to a point yes, but it gives me more chills than anything.

I love how Aidairo doesn't tell us anything about the twins, only fragments navigate the story along with the plot, something is only revealed to us when necessary. Everything is up to interpretation and we are left with doubts. It exasperates me anyway, but I feel better to see that I am not the only one (better accompanied than alone).

You mentioned a very interesting point, the fact that Amane did not want to hide his injuries. This is quite curious, isn't it? Especially if we consider what you said about "marking territory", it makes a lot of sense.

Apparently, Amane started to have these injuries shortly before the festival, there's a post I made explaining the period in which it happened, but I haven't found it yet ;-; As your question has been unanswered for a few days, I decided to respond and if I find this post I'll put the link here and reblog it.

This was probably the only period in which Amane was without these injuries, considering what Tsuchigomori said about him being injured like this from the beginning. And if the injuries happened before the festival, then just before their death.

Now, who is responsible… In some posts I point to Tsukasa because FOR NOW, he is still the one most likely to be responsible for the injuries.

Amane isn't one to care about random people, for him to forgive being hurt like this it has to be someone he loves. The target is the four of them, his parents, Tsukasa and himself, yes, we have to consider Amane.

As for the parents, we have no clue as to how they started to treat the boys after Tsukasa returned, we cannot draw concrete conclusions yet.

Would Amane forgive himself for getting hurt?

Hmm…..

Only Tsukasa remains.

These injuries are so mysterious, they are made in suggestive places too, even his mouth has injuries…

and when you talked about "marking territory" it made me create a fanfic in my head hahahaha

Look! Up in your ask box ! Is it a bird? Is it a plane ? No! It's an artificially removed piece of the sun using Whit Young as a mask ! Can you tell I am running out of unique ways to start these Anywho, next up on my list that I totally have issss Shidou! I myself don't actually have a lot of thoughts on him other than that his first MV makes my flower symbolism brain go insane, but he's still on the list !

The Sun… the blinding light… speaks to me… I listen for the song of the stars… and I hear a voice… urging me to talk about Mr funny doctor man!

Shidou is cool, though he might be the most… “Just Kinda There” Milgram character in my eyes. I have to admit I’ve probably thought the least about him compared to other characters, and I can’t really tell you why. He’s got a pretty interesting story all things considered, so I’m not sure what about him makes me so indifferent to him. At least he heals the other prisoners which is very swag of him.

CW: Murder, organ harvesting, human experimentation.

I have to admit I’m not really sure what the theorizing landscape looks like around him, which is part of why I haven’t thought of him much. Like we know he probably harvested organs to save either his children, his wife or all of the above, as well as for “scientific purposes” that he mentioned inhis 2nd VD (I am really intrigued by what the hell that means, but I’m not sure where to even start theorizing about that). But I think it was pretty much confirmed in Aesculapius he took the organs from countless braindead patients. Not great, obviously, it’s a pretty fucked up thing to do, but considering the other shit we’ve forgiven…

The big thing about him is how much he regrets what he's done, what with him wanting not to be forgiven and all that. But then finding new purpose in helping the other patients, etc. It's a cool character arc, and it's nice and wholesome, but it's a bit too straightforward for my tastes, you know? I think the most interesting thing about it is how it brings out Es' thoughts about life etc to light, but that's more on Es being one of my faves than Shidou in my view.

I guess the interesting dilemma about him is how much worse does the number of people killed make it, since he probably has the highest kill count by far. Like most people here have killed one or a few, Yuno likely hasn't killed anyone, and then this fucker may have a kill count in the dozens judging by the graves at the start of Triage. But even then, his regret really makes him quite sympathetic in comparison to the other prisoners.

That said, I do think Trial 3 might be able to make him a lot more interesting, because his Voice Reveal glitchy line is very very intriguing.

Shidou: [Cackling] Not dead... Yeah, she's definitely not dead... I finally understand the value of what I've been robbing people of...

Does that imply his wife ended up braindead after he took a bunch of people's organs? And that's when he understood why some families where so reluctant to give up their own family members? Is that when he stopped experimenting on people or something like that? It's all very odd.

Anyways, yeah, I feel you in the flower symbolism. One day I'm going to go down that rabbit hole and I will perish. For now I am not willing to go that insane (I say, as if I have any amount of sanity left).

One thing I do love is his dynamic with Amane. My guy consistently gets threatened by a twelve year old half his height, and he just doesn't know how to deal with it. I think it will be very funny if he gets stabbed by her, though I very much doubt he or anyone else will die due to it. I think it was implied in some timelines posts that Yuno could potentially take over if Amane... I don't know, cuts his hands off or something? Ah, we'll be fine. Inno Amane, cuz it's not like we know for sure that she won't be able to harm him even while guiltied.

Anyways interrogation questions.

(T1) Q1: Why did you choose your current workplace?

S: Because I thought it'd let me contribute to society.

(T2) Q15: Have you contributed to society?

S: I had thought my work was a contribution to society.

Is that related to whatever "scientific purposes" he originally had? Interesting. I'm really curious what that was.

(T1) Q14: If you could bring someone back to life, who would you choose?

S: I can't choose anyone.

Ouchie.

(T1) Q16: What is the definition of happiness?

S: To be promised an unchanging tomorrow.

That's honestly a pretty interesting answer. Better than Mahiru's at least! (I'm still slightly mad at that I can't lie to you)

(T1) Q17: What animal are you like?

S: Perhaps a ray. There is no particular reason, I just like them.

... sir what the fuck are you talking about.

(I looked up the symbolism, apparently they represent balance. I guess that could be about the balance of guilty/innocent since he talks about "the scale tilting to and fro" between the two in Triage? Like he wants to atone for his sins but he needs to stay alive for the others? I feel like I'm reaching but "ray" is just a very weird answer)

(T1) Q20: What do you think about smoking?

S: People tell me to stop because it's bad for my health. But I smoke because I want to be unhealthy.

It's a good thing he's familiar with sharp tools with how much he needs to watch that edge.

(T2) Q7: Are there any fellow prisoners you are on good terms with?

S: Kayano-kun has ended up like that, and I became unable to smoke as well too. I feel lonely that the smoking group as disbanded.

Sad news for the smoking group enjoyers. I hope they make up in Trial 3 or even post Milgram depending on what happens at the end, I like their dynamic.

(T2) Q12: Can you drive a car?

S: Yes I can. But I don't really want to do it anymore.

In case anyone was wondering why everyone thinks his family was involved in a car accident of some kind.

(T2) Q13: What are your thoughts on Amane's changes?

S: The adults need to do something about it. It's frustrating because I can't move due to treating people's injuries, so I have no choice but to leave it to someone else.

So true bestie please help her even if she stabs you. If we inno her can you help out? Please please please?

(T2) Q17: Tell us about your dating history.

S: I don't remember much but, I had one girlfriend in kindergarten, and in elementary school I had two relationships. I started going out with my wife in the 2nd year of middle school, and we've been together ever since.

Yo my guy had mad rizz the hell. Fellow childhood friend AO3 tag enjoyer too.

All in all, I would have probably voted him inno in both trials. Wonder what's gonna happen in Trial 3.

Related to a part from your random thoughts post: Maybe past Tsukasa mentioned the clock moving to get Nene interested in it? Idk if he always had the plan to break it (he knows many things, I'm never sure when he decided to do something...) but even if he did, it must have been important to tell her about the rumor and it's powers. It could be he knew it wasn't likely she could just fix it. Also if he did have this plan then he wouldn't want her to be able to tell anyone and maybe complicate it, they need to be able to do it without anyone realizing.

It's interesting though cuz no matter what I think he is putting his trust in Nene... Maybe the possibility that she fix the clock is one he is OK with :) As long as she gets the power, that's the priority... I think because he must have things from the past he wants her to do and see?

Aside from that, I'm curious if Teru isn't frozen truly due to his own power, or his alliance with Akane. It's ambigious enough right now cuz we know he is definitely stronger than Kou, but hmm, I wonder if it's enough. Or if he is using a supernatural item, since he also has many tools he utilizes. In any case, I wonder if that means they'll have a way to unfreeze Hanako? Or if there is truly nothing to be done. My 'random thoughts' post... give me a sec to laugh... that title is really funny to me, the fact that I couldn't come with a better one together with the sound of it... gets me laughing. Ah... alright I'm done!

Hmm, I do think he did that for a reason and not for nothing, and I believe he wants more than getting Nene interested in it (what happened so far doesn't have a thing to do with getting her interested in the clock... she took no action toward the clock so far... something might happen later, then?), since we don't know what may happen later... if we said things will get fixed, maybe the clock will be back to normal, somehow? (I mean there was a time we thought things won't be the same after the severance and then ch 96 came) If that was the case... maybe he wants Nene to use it in the future? I don't know... I've been always thinking about how he was so relaxed while Amane was trying to get the clock to move. Now I feel that could maybe be out of his knowledge Amane won't manage to do a thing, I feel he really had his own view on that clock since back then. (I'm a bit shocked really... I used to think Amane might of achieved something at the end. not to say... we saw the result of destroying the clock that controls time, won't it feel a bit unsatisfying not to see the result of getting it to move? we even don't know what is meant by that note of it stopping on a certain day...)

Maybe the clock will be fixed somehow? For something that controls the school time and without it around everything there is just... frozen... I see there is a need to restore it to get things back to 'normal'? Unless there is another way to do that?

Is it this way, then? If that's the case, then we're back to why Tsukasa wanted Nene interested in the clock in the first place. If she won't have anything to do with the fact of 'it allows you to time travel', why did he bother to tell her that? he asked Nene to come 'play' with him, didn't he? You can see I myself am confused about this whole clock/what are the thing's' Tsukasa wants to get out of using it deal.

Ah, yes. The trust he puts in Nene really is huge. I wonder for how long she will stay 'his assistant', the end of next chapter? a few chapters to come? until the clock deal is over? later on? I really look forward to see them relaxing over a cup of tea and having a chat next chapter or so.

As for Teru's case, I had Akane in mind... but then I just related things to what he did for Kou back in like... ch 27? to make him not get affected by kaku turning back time... he just stopped his time. Akane's power revolves round stopping time... and it's the problem they are facing. fighting fire with fire is... worthless? Unless, Akane helped him in some other way...? If it was Aakne? As for "if he is using a supernatural item" thing... Idk... it sounds... not too convincing to me... yet kind of convincing at the same time. We don't really know much about the items the Minamoto family has or about their different usage or potential, so maybe there is an item to help Teru face such a thing, yet again... we're talking about this big clock that is simply too powerful, would any item Teru has be a match for a thing of a huge deal as that clock? So, in here... I'm like in between.

Hanako... I wonder if Teru or maybe Akane can do something about his condition...? Sadly, as you might of got from what I said before, I'm not too sure about the state of either of them or how much they can really do to help. It's so unclear it makes my head hurt. Anyway, for some reason, I can't see Hanako staying in that state this whole arc... it just... feels... not right...? something will be done about it. what is that something? I have no idea! everything is just a mess for me in this case. I had a thought before of... is Hanako frozen together with his Hakojoudai or is it just him? Maybe if Hakojoudai is free... something might change a bit? ......?

Tiara and Kuneshige. Haha, I also believe they aren't there for nothing, at least Kuneshige. I'm having fun making jokes about them lately, instead of talking seriously... I came to enjoy that somehow. I realllly do want to see him run into Tsukasa. It sound hilarious to me. Ah... talking seriously, yes it's cool he knows about Tsu-Tsu. Though, I don't really get why he should feel guilty. :) So far, I think he didn't do anything wrong to Tsukasa? He talked to him in a nice way when he was little? Or is there something I missed? I'm happy with getting feedback on this part.

we can't vote amane as innocent and shidou guilty at all.

this is a theory of mine, but on the preview of amane's song she says "I will deny you. A distorted vision needs to be purged. Let's strangle his throat thoroughly so he'll never talk back.", by the "Second trial commencement notice" video, we know that Amane is really aggressive towards Shidou, so the song presented on her preview could be talking about him.

If you think about it, it'll kinda make sense that she want to end shidou. he's a doctor, he uses medicine to cure people, he doesn't use faith to cure people.

It's just like what their cult did to her; since she didn't used faith to cure the cat, the punished her, and she ended up killing the cat, because "if it didn't cured itself before, it's because it didn't had enough faith".

her brain is totally washed because of the abuse of the cult, I have no doubt that she will try something against shidou

The part where you talk about Amane possibly doing something to Shidou though is really interesting to me; as this could end up being something similar to what happened to Mikoto and Kotoko? Like just thinking about it, imagine Amane becoming aggressive towards Es just like Makoto did in his first interrogation ⎯ and Shidou possibly coming in to try defuse the situation? 🤔 Something like that ig..

But with the whole voting thing you mentioned... It's hard to explain it but I do get what you mean by how voting Amane innocent and Shidou Guilty would still end badly for us. Even if we end up voting them with the same result as last time, it'd still end badly but... It's way better than making new votes for them?

And I also feel like that's what MILGRAM is trying to direct us to do as well, liking keep the votes the same as before with how the whole music between the two is clearly showing the innocence(?) in Shidou's preview, whereas Amane clearly shows her guilty side.

I'm not sure If i explained my side of things properly, but I'll talk more about this once Shidou's Second trial + voice drama is released!

Buriko-Senpai! This is such a wonderful blog to read, and I love your art so much! It's so nice to see other traditional artists out there! What's your thoughts on the demon slayer marks and their affects after Muzan's defeat? Do you think they're a purely physical effect, or a supernatural curse like Ubuyashiki's? It seems like in the latter case it would be lifted? In Tanjiro's status report, he mentions wanting everyone to be happy "when he's gone", and hints of preparation for the future...

Thank you for the kind words on my art! (≧◡≦) Glad to know people like the style, I like the feel of trad art both for the final product and how the pen feels in my hand, haha~. I love all the additional possibilities in digital art, but will leave that to the people who are good at it. Glad you find my blog a good read too, because we’ve got another lengthy read ahead.

As for the mark and whether it works in a purely physical sense or a curse sense, I'm ok thinking of it in either way, depending on its purposes in post-canon fanwork (but of course, you can do whatever you want in fanwork totally inventing the mark or completely ignoring it too). As Gotouge never states exactly what becomes of Tanjiro, Giyuu, and Sanemi, I don’t feel we can declare it working one way or another. We'll consider it from both angles, but in general, I think canon evidence leans toward an avoidable physical impact. Even that, however, leaves room for interpretation on strict "25" might be or not.

If we approach the curse direction first, the worldbuilding surrounding the Ubuyashiki curse gives a lot of framework for the mark being a curse. The second fanbook even gives us more circumstance and age-related perimeters that seem very arbitrary, like how only one male will survive each generation and how the daughters will also die young by sudden illness or accident if they don’t marry out. As the curse is tied to Muzan’s/demons existence, it is completely lifted once Muzan is eradicated, but Kiriya still anticipates dying in his 20’s and does not feel relieved that it’s gone until he’s in his 30’s. This would put Giyuu and Sanemi in their 50’s if they’re still around, and with their own curses effectively gone, they’d probably have spent the past couple decades insisting to Kiriya that he can relax.

If the rebound of the mark is a supernatural curse, there are a couple other things that make sense about this to me, in the light of cosmic justice at play in this universe. First, it’s a general rule in a lot of philosophies and other works of fiction that to gain something powerful, you must pay the price and sacrifice something. Second, the Ubuyashiki family is cursed to carry the sins of one of its members until they can stop that demon member. While Demon Slayers may not necessarily be carrying the sins of demons, we see demon marks at play in this series first, though its effects are not clear until we see how Nezuko is stronger when her vines appear. A Demon Slayer also gaining extra strength like this is, perhaps, taboo.

As for the mark being a purely physical effect, I think the emphasis on physical effects of the mark (especially how in Chapter 129 Muichiro analyzes its effects on body temperature and the heart), and how throughout the manga it is continually stressed that the Demon Slayers are mere humans even if Breath helps them push the natural limits of human ability, lend to a more physical interpretation that in order to push so far past normal limits, it has to borrow against the natural human lifespan. This is how the characters in-universe also interpret its effects. If we look more into what Muichiro says:

Muichiro: The anger was too strong for me to have any handle on my emotions. I believe that in that moment, my heartrate exceeded 200 beats, and my body felt as hot as though it was burning. My temperature would had measured at least 39 degrees or more. Shinobu: !? Could you move like that? That would be life-threatening. Muichiro: Right. That’s why I think it’s a matter of falling into one category or another. Whether you die or survive that moment is what determines whether a mark will appear or not. Amane: A heartrate of over 200, and why a temperature of 39 degrees? Muichiro: That’s because when I was received treatment at Kocho-san’s place I was running a fever. When my temperature was taken, the thermometer read 39 degrees. At the time I would have been said to have a mark appear, my body was just as feverish.

(For reference, according to searching with the same terms used in the original text, your top heartrate is 220 minus your age, making Muichiro's 206 beats per minute. The average for someone in their 20's is 120~140, somewhat hard exercise would put it at 150, and hard exercise puts it at 170, according to the Borg scale. Normal body temperature in Celsius is 37 degrees; while 39 C = 102.2 F.)

If we look back at when Tanjiro is first facing off against Daki, he considers how he gets more power out of Hinokami Kagura than from Water Breathing because it suits his body better, but he is not yet physically capable of the switch between them. As he psyches himself out in Chapter 77, we see that he has physically been trying to prepare himself for this, and he’s shouting at himself to set his heart ablaze. Clearly, Tanjiro is leaning into that advice from Rengoku-san, and if he’s on his way to getting the mark, he’s been taking that advice somewhat literally.

In Chapter 78, as he purposely raises his own temperature to fight the side effects of switching to Hinokami Kagura, we get a flashback that Kiyo-chan was very worried that Tanjiro was running a temperature of 38 degrees (100.4 F) for three days, but Tanjiro begged her not to tell Shinobu yet because he felt fine in that sustained feverish state, and was able to put more power into Hinokami Kagura that way. (This may also be part of why the mark seems to have a different effect on Sun Breath users, as their body draws from this power in a more sustained way.)

We can probably think of most of the other Breath Users who attained the mark as having gotten it in a similar way to Muichiro. In a fit of high emotion and desperate battle, their body pulled from its natural reserves, and similar to a human and/or demon being exposed to lots of Muzan’s cells all at once and either dying or quickly adapting, they attained a mark and relied on that temporary extra burst of strength. While it either happens or doesn’t happen for the others (Muichiro plainly states he was unaware of a mark’s appearance) based on being the flow of tense battle, Himejima seemed to have gained enough ability that he could choose when he wanted to tap into that power. When we’re first left not knowing what else Amane told the Pillars, Himejima openly wonders what would happen in his case (seeing as he is over the age of 25). In the third light novel, we get a brief scene of Himejima pulling Muichiro aside after that meeting to ask if he’s alright with this, since he’s just found out that he has no chance already of living a long life. Muichiro is fine and wonders about Himejima, who is also fine with this. They both are willing to do whatever it takes to fight Upper Moons and know their survival has never been assured. Himejima goes on to say similar things to Kokushibo in Chapters 169 and 170, when we the readers are finally told about the limited life expectancy. The two of them both sort of expect Himejima to drop dead that night because of his limited stores to draw from. Himejima would had preferred to not raise his temperature so much until facing Muzan (seeing as he knows he’ll be racing against time), but knows he has no choice but to start while facing Kokushibo. Kokushibo is somewhat impressed with his control of getting a mark and his preparation to die, and he finds it a waste of Himejima’s ability and likewise is like, “why not preserve your flesh as a demon” because, as we find out in Kokushibo’s flashbacks in Chapter 178, this was part of what motivated him to accept Muzan’s blood. He couldn’t handle the frustration of his polished techniques being wiped out by a short life span, especially since it would mean he was soon out of time to match or best Yoriichi. If we go back to that conversation between Himejima and Kokushibo, Kokushibo loses his cool (hahaha, that feels like a bit of a pun here) the moment Himejima is like, “there was one exception to the rule though, wasn’t there?” I suspect that Yoriichi was the exception partly due to Sun Breathing being a more perfected, sustained form of pushing the limits of human capability, and Yoriichi being born naturally perfect at it, so his body didn’t need to scramble looking for extras sources of power like hastily (or slowly) borrowing against his lifespan. What’s very interesting about Kokushibo is that he also regularly sustained his mark, so perhaps it’s possible he could had lived past 25? Here's what really key: We also don’t know about these early marked users. Did they regularly sustain their marks, or did they only show up regularly when they battled demons, repeatedly borrowing against their future lifespan? Or was it a one-off thing for each of them, like it was for Giyuu and Sanemi? It’s possible that even if Giyuu and Sanemi are doomed to shorter lives, since they both only had the marks for relatively short periods of time on a single night, they might well exceed 25 years. The fact that Gotouge gave them descendants (as opposed to only implied reincarnations), and because they are both characters generally written as dense in the ways of love and close personal relationships, that sort of implies they needed some time before leaving behind offspring, and I hear a lot of voices in the fandom displeased with the idea of them leaving children behind when they know they won't be around to raise them. Since we don't know any canon details on this, let's cut the boys some slack and say they took a chance on being happy. After all, all their time in the Corp already teaches them tomorrow is never assured.

Side note while we’re on the Sanemi topic, he attains his mark right after Himejima brings his own forth (because Himejima is a badass who can just be like, “ok, now”). While he comments to Himejima what a good idea it was to do Pillar Training so he could attain that powerful state, it’s also possible that being in the presence of someone who already had one was part of what triggered Sanemi’s body to access that state as well. The nature of the mark’s spread from person to person is another tick in the “supernatural curse” box if people like that interpretation more.

Let’s take a look back at Tanjiro, though.

Tanjiro, our special Hinokami Kagura boy, was already a special case for his own knowledge of Sun Breathing (however imperfect), and his own sustained mark (though as Genya notes in Chapter 134, it tends to transform slowly, and as Tanjiro remarks in response to Shinjuro’s comments in Chapter 81, his mark was not something he was born with like the original Sun Breath user was, it was but a childhood injury which took on a different shape when he was injured at the Final Selection). While Amane cites him as the one who started the trickle of marks appearing again, we know in the Pleasure Quarter arc than Tanjiro was been unknowingly training himself to make the mark appear, like the Pillars later tried to do in training.

Tanjiro also, however, has the very unique experience of undergoing repeated cruel and unusual suffering in battle against Muzan, basically dying, turning into a demon with more of Muzan’s cells than any other demon in history, and turning human again with man-made medicine all in the span of about two hours.

We can’t really compare Tanjiro’s case to Giyuu’s and Sanemi’s very easily. Besides the slightly different nature of his mark (which Muzan says will still kill him anyway if he becomes human again, but whether he says that based on a cosmic rule or historical precident, we don't know), we simply don’t know all the details of how Tanjiro's flesh has been affected by everything that happened to him in that two hour period. It seems safe to say that becoming a demon is what saved his life since it rebuilt his flesh and supercharged life back into him, but since he wasn’t a demon long enough to have fully integrated those new cells, the entirely reconstructed parts of him (his left arm and right eye) are essentially lifeless. However, there may still be some amount of reclaiming that his body did during his demon minutes, for the whole right side of his face should be paralyzed (yet he can still use it expressively), and there was probably internal damage throughout his entire body and other various injuries (like stabbing himself) which were repaired enough for him to survive. Had he been a demon longer (long enough that his body with Muzan’s memories likely would had broken down the medicine Kanao gave him), my guess is that he would had fully integrated these body parts, like how Nezuko gets to keep her legs despite all the times they were blown or chopped off.

But we also know that Tanjiro had to take a few months to recover (his visitors looked like they waited the whole three months before getting permission to see him), and that his condition allows him to live and work, but he generally is in a weakened state. Again, rather than only having borrowed (on multiple occasions) against his own lifespan, we don't know the extent of the damage and repair he's undergone.

While he’s got 25 as a historical benchmark to anticipate, and as you mention, he does seem to fully anticipate that early demise, his case is so unique that it could go in any direction. Tanjiro might live longer than 25, as this would give him time to pass on Hinokami Kagura to at least his eldest son, but like Tanjuro, he’d probably have a pretty weak constitution for the rest of his dwindling life. But also worth noting, the phrase is that they die by at least age 25. That means some of the Warring States era swordsmen probably died before that age. (｡•́︿•̀｡) I don't feel this is likely for Tanjiro, Giyuu, and Sanemi, but it is worth noting as a possibility.

In your fic, why didn’t Celebrimbor tell Sauron what they had been to each other? If he had, how do you think Sauron would have reacted? Or if he showed him the memory of being rejected? Also, why do you think Celebrimbor would make a bad parent?

Celebrimbor is uncertain how Sauron would react and feels no obligation to tell him. As for Sauron's reaction, well, he is remembering more and more and I hope you'll forgive me if I defer on those questions and answer them in the next chapter.

With regards to Celebrimbor as a parent. I’d like to caveat this by saying I am talking about my personal interpretation of the character (I mentioned it in a headcanon post) and my personal interpretations of themes in canon. I don’t mean to come off as authoritative or invalidating of other interpretations here and apologize if I do. But yes, I don’t think Celebrimbor wants kids or would be great at raising them, and moreover I think that, if you write him as a Feanorian, he thematically can’t have kids.

One of those themes that is important and interesting to me is dissolution of family, that Finwe had such a large family and it was whittled down to nothing (likewise Elwe’s family, though it’s smaller). Maeglin never meets Fingolfin, Elwing is a war orphan, Finduilas the spring leaf of the House of Finwe dies young, Elrond and Elros know no grandparents, Celebrían has a huge family on both sides but knows only three of her distant cousins, and two of them die in her lifetime*. And I think this needs to apply even more (sevenfold?) to the House of Feanor: it falls apart, it dies, the deeds that led to the Feanorians being cursed make its destruction inevitable because of story logic. I bounce off OC Feanorians the same way I bounce off AUs where everything goes well: “that’s not how Arda works,” I think; even AUs with a happy ending need some tragedy; even fix-its need to have a cost. If Celebrimbor is a Feanorian, there’s a way in which I think he can’t have a kid? He’s the only one of the Feanorians who has a heroic death, the only one with a noble (if terrible) death, one of only two killed by the actual enemy (not killed because they are the enemy), he’s the best of all of them by far... but he has to die, and all that survive him a Great Work. The Feanorians bear no fruit - that which survives them are the Silmarils (made before the Oath) and the Rings (made by someone who didn’t swear the Oath). Celebrimbor is innocent of the sins of his family, but he can’t escape story-fate.

*Elrond, Gil-Galad, and Celebrimbor being the cousins - I’m not counting her parents or children, even though they are also cousins given the convoluted family tree! I prefer Oropher and/or Amdir not to be related to Celeborn. I do think it would be mentioned if either of them were related to Thingol and let's have some elves in positions of leadership not related to Finwe and/or Elu: surely there were some people in Middle-earth who weren't =P

This is also why I don’t go for any OC Finweans in Middle-earth. The Houses of Finwe and Elwe fall apart. They are diminished, in the literal sense of getting smaller and smaller. Then comes to the re-knowing of family in Aman once people start showing, which I also think is interesting esp since I headcanon that the 2nd Age people and Finduilas are reborn first.

As for why I don't think C would be a good parent, I am talking about my version, not anyone else's. But I don't think he wants children (which is not to say that parents who end up having kids despite not wanting them can't be good parents!). Rather, I think he'd resent them in some way for taking his attention away from his work (can’t spend a week locked away in a workroom if you need to feed a baby) and not know how to act around them. He’s far more emotionally literate than his parents (not difficult), but he’s even more unable to explain things on a child-appropriate linguistic level (though perfectly good with adults). He also tends to be sharp, isn’t inclined to niceness (kindness and pity yes, but there’s a difference between that and nice - a bit like Gandalf in that way), thinks he’s almost always right, and he’d probably be fairly critical despite knowing he shouldn’t be.

Finally, kidfic as a genre does nothing for me? I get its appeal and I’ve liked a couple, but it’s not for me personally.

I'm gonna stick mostly to one single text for this one because, as a topic, memory-embalming is really large and I think you can construct a lot on like, solely the concept of memory and fading and preservation in the legendarium. and I’m not gonna try that lol

I should preface this by saying that more often than not I take great issue with the way jirt talks about his theology-adjacent Goodness and Good Choices, and I think it's pr... pro... pronghhh I don't wanna write that word lmao, please take it as me intending "it has non-straightforward issues that are worth a second look", not as anything else. it’s problematic, there I put it down lol academic gremlin brain won, for anyone who doesn’t wholly align with him philosophically. so I suppose anyone who generally agrees with jirt's own reckons will disagree with my takeaway here, but so are things. anyway, I'll try to explain why I called it a value judgement.

I know this is a lot of text, but it's needed. so there's kind of a lot to unpack there but to strip it down to the relevant basics:

part of the reason why some of the exiles do not return is that they don't want to return as exiles, but remain where they have power and stand at the top of the hierarchy (this to me feels like, specifically, a very Galadriel motive — but that's yet another post lmao); they also want peace and bliss, and that is another motive, the same peace and bliss that exist in Valinor (and while the first motive I list, I believe, is directly consequential to the status of the first age's survivors, this second motive, having the peace and bliss of Valinor outside of Valinor, has been present and thematic since the speech of Feanor to the Noldor, and likely before that); they can't therefore abide the "fading" of the land, the way it changes with time, and endeavour to preserve it — embalm it (this becomes emblematic in one of the various versions of the creation of the Elessar, or one of the them: a stone that, if someone looks through it, shows things as they would be when healed, whole, and beautiful. in one of said versions, Celebrimbor gives this stone to Galadriel, who is saddened by the change of time. this is Celebrimbor of Gondolin, or perhaps Telerin Celebrimbor, but no matter the origin, the theme persists)(second parenthesis to point out how third-age Lothlórien, preserved by Nenya, is in all effects a land out of time, where ancient things aren't simply echoed but continue living, and where trees literally don't die. leaves change colour during autumn and winter, then fall down in spring when immediately new buds start growing); fourth motive is the healing of the land's hurts and its adornment.

the difference between healing the land and “embalming” it, I suppose, is the acceptance of its change under the sun, so the acceptance of time's passing, while healing and adorning it work in unison with said passing. of course the matter here is, the absence of decay is kind of Valinor’s whole thing. but we know, both from letter 156 and the Akallabêth, that Valinor isn’t inherently a blessed land and it doesn’t give immortality by virtue of being Valinor. in fact: “'for it is not the land of Manwe that makes its people deathless, but the Deathless that dwell therein have hallowed the land; and there you would but wither and grow weary the sooner, as moths in a light too strong and steadfast.” and letter 156: “for as emissaries from the Valar clearly inform him, the Blessed Realm does not confer immortality. The land is blessed because the Blessed live there, not vice versa, and the Valar are immortal by right and nature [...]”

so, really, it’s not the where that counts. jirt, I believe, makes it pretty obvious that it’s the why and how, and through whose counsel. what I think is identified here as the fault isn’t that preservation of the land isn’t possible and therefore should not be attempted (clearly it is), rather it’s the wish to create a paradise of their own, a desire that Sauron identifies and exploits. now, obviously I’m not trying to argue that Sauron is right or anything the like (even at early stages, and despite the partial overlap of motives, Sauron’s goals can’t really be called good, even though you might argue that they gain some form of internal conflict), or that in pursuit of a challenge to the divine harm becomes justifiable — this isn’t really about characters and more about jirt the man himself and his production.

I just generally take issue with the idea that wanting a heaven of sorts, made with your own skills, which is within the realm of possibility, and by no one’s leave but your own, is inherently a bad thing, or that it must come with harm and corruption, and compromised motives. but in the narrative of these books, from an outside-of-text perspective, it doesn’t seem to be possible to issue the challenge that letter 131 talks about without also giving aid to evil (Sauron, earlier Morgoth) willingly ot unwillingly, without getting closer to “magic” and “machinery”, without it being written and interpreted under a lens of “embalming”, of refusal to let the world live its course. it isn’t possible to have that cake and eat it (yeah jirt kind of wrote that saying wrong lmao), which is identified as a corruptible weak point.

it isn’t possible because this discontent, or this wish for independence, is in itself a seed that the story connects to evil and lies (Morgoth’s work in Valinor, and possibly earlier than that his discord); because it’s inherently linked to wanting the top-of-the-hierarchy authority granted by Middle Earth. and because the legendarium doesn’t truly leave room for any gods-challenging story that isn’t some form of taint and mistake, a Fall™ (challenges to Morgoth here don’t count, he is the fall; this is about Eru and the Valar).

(I think here it’s relevant to note that the elves not being in ME is elsewhere called out as a loss for Men, who do not have the “elder siblings” at hand who were supposed to teach them and guide them; as well as the fact that Eru in morgoth’s ring mentions, himself, that the elves have been “removed to Aman from the Middle Earth in which I set them”. so it’s not necessarily so straightforward in all aspects — but I think a discussion on that would be going a little too much beyond the scope of this tbh)

I believe my point is exemplified by a note in this same letter:

“preservation in reverent memory” here is not negatively judged, despite being effectively an antiquarian lore memorial to (”good”) tradition. Elrond also rebukes Sauron, and is not at all subjected to the same Ring-related test as Galadriel in LotR. and I think this is sort of the narrative point of the story, part of the greater (in good measure theological) thesis underlying it. and why I called it a value judgement.

Okay so I googled it and apparently Season 2 hasn't been confirmed but there is plenty of material from the manga available to make a sequel. If anyone has any other information, I would LOVE for someone to reply to this with that info.

REVIEW TIME!

Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is an anime about a ghost named Hanako-Kun, who haunts the school bathroom, being summoned by Nene Yashiro, a girl who dreams of having a boyfriend to love her for who she is. Despite how weird and crackhead-sounding the title and storyline are, the show has an amazing plot and incredible characters. Definitely high up on my list of animes I love. Overall, I have to rate Season 1 a definite 8/10. The show is awesome, but I despise the fact that all the characters keep making fun of Nene's legs as if a woman is supposed to have every single feature of her body be perfect. I feel like it would've made more sense if you had people make fun of her boobs or something rather than her ankles because for her boobs to be kinda underdeveloped in high school would be a definite target for bullying rather than a feature as random as her ankles. I am definitely a Hananene shipper, and possibly a Mitsukou shipper. I still wanna know WHY Hanako killed Tsukasa, and if my s3xu@l @$$ault theory was right or not. I can't wait for Season 2 to come out, and I hope they continue to have the show be the masterpiece it is.

JSHK Theory from the story of Takasebune and how Amane became Hanako

I don’t know how tumblr works but I felt like I had to share this thing I had in my mind so here’s my very first post!

Spoiler warning for anime fans!

In chapter 41 of the manga, during the Picture Perfect/Esoragato arc, Amane (i.e. Hanako) reads a part of a story in class.

I saw in another post that the actual story Amane was reading was Takasebune, a short Japanese story written by Mori Ōgai, which just so happens to be about a man who killed his brother! I have a couple of theories about it.

I’m not sure which post I read it from, or where to find the manga panel with the full translation, but if I do find them I’ll put them here!

If you want to read it you can click here, but I’ll be giving a short summary for the sake of the theory.

Anyways, the part that Amane reads is this :

“That day, the wind died down toward evening, and a slight over-

cast dimmed the contours of the moon; it was a night when the heat

of approaching summer seemed to be rising as mist from the earth

on the river's banks and even from the riverbed.”

Seems obvious why Amane reads this part, given his past love for the moon. But that’s not the point of my theory.

The story revolves around a poor man named Kisuke whom was charged guilty for the murder of his little brother and was sentenced to a term on a distant island. He’s being escorted by a constable (a low-ranking officer) in a boat along the Takase river on the way to the island. Criminals escorted to the island are usually accompanied by a relative, but Kisuke had none.

Kisuke tells the constable of his life with his brother.

Kisuke and his brother were orphaned and worked together to survive. They tried their best not to get separated. However, his brother fell sick and was unable to work. As Kisuke now had to work harder to sustain both of them, his brother felt extremely guilty.

One day, his brother decided to kill himself to make Kisuke’s life easier by cutting his windpipe. However, this did not kill him immediately. When a shocked Kisuke arrived, his brother told him to pull the knife out and finish the job, as he was in tremendous pain. When Kisuke faltered, his brother became angry and demanded him to pull it out, looking at him “as if he were facing an enemy”. Eventually Kisuke obeyed, pulled out the knife, and let his brother die happily. Just then an old woman saw Kisuke holding the knife in front of his brother’s dead body and ran for help.

After telling his story, Kisuke cries.

The story ends with the constable pitying Kisuke, thinking that Kisuke wasn’t guilty at all, but eventually deciding to leave it to the authorities.

Sorry for the long read!

Now there’s tons of parallels you can get from this story! But I’ll just point out some of the things I thought about.

Anyways, the obvious parallel between Kisuke and Amane’s story is the whole brother killing thing. But Kisuke was told by his brother to kill him.

Theory 1 is that Amane was told by Tsukasa to kill him.

We already know Tsukasa’s some sort of sadistic sociopath and he was delighted at the sight of Amane’s despair-stricken face when he killed him.

Perhaps it’s not as direct as that, but I do believe that Tsukasa did want to be killed at some extent. Or, like Kisuke’s brother, tried to kill himself, but Amane dealt the final blow. Nonetheless, some sort of circumstance occurred that made it necessary for Amane to kill Tsukasa, even though it was completely against his will. We have this scene from chapter 9.

It’s as if he’s asking if it was okay for him to kill Tsukasa when he absolutely had to.

Similarly to Kisuke, he’s conflicted with the fact that he murdered his own brother and with the fact that he HAD to kill him/was demanded to kill him. His sense of morality is shaken.

Another parallel I’d like to point out is the symbolism of the rivers.

In jshk and Japanese mythology, the sea is strongly associated with the concept of the afterlife and supernatural. The Near Shore represents the realm of the living and the Far Shore represents the afterlife/supernaturals.

Rivers connect to the sea. Perhaps the Takase River in the story implies the passage from the Near Shore to the Far Shore, otherwise Amane’s journey to hell.

Theory 2 is that Amane’s complicated situation made God/some deity pity him, just like the constable pitied Kisuke. Ultimately, his sin is irreversible, so God lets him atone for it by becoming the leader of the school’s Seven Wonders.

He’s mentioned about his atonement and how he was given the task of leader by God for the erasure of his guilt in this scene from chapter 3 :

We also have this scene from chapter 10 :

Urge, just seeing this panel makes my heart ache.

Also, Instead of the river representing a journey to the afterlife, what if it represented Boundaries? It’s already been explained how Boundaries were in between the two shores, thus explaining the symbolism of water in the boundaries.

Maybe, theory 3, Amane entered a boundary? Whose boundary, then?

Theory 3 is that Amane entered a boundary, the boundary of none other than Hanako-san of the toilet. A proper, girl Hanako.

We already know that “Hanako” does have a boundary.

Hanako is one of the Seven Wonders, so this rule applies for her as well.

Perhaps Amane wished for something (because Hanako grants wishes!), maybe to avoid the circumstances forcing him to kill his brother.

Perhaps Hanako offered Amane her spot as leader, so she can be released from it? That could explain why, even though just a couple decades old, Amane is powerful as shit! Because of the passing down of power!

Okay I feel as if this theory essay is getting too long and messy. It’s 12 am as I’m writing this, and I want sleep.

Let’s recap the theories discussed so far!

1. Amane was forced to kill Tsukasa, either by demanded by Tsukasa himself or by some other circumstances (though that should be fairly obvious)

2. Amane was pitied by God and given the job as Leader of the Wonders

3. Amane was burdened with the job of Leader of the Wonders in exchange for a wish from a previous Hanako.

Out of all of these, I feel like Theory 1 and 2 are the most likely. Theory 3 seems kind of a stretch, but is interesting to think about. I am so sorry if this made no sense, I just strayed from the original Takasebune topic and made something all on my own. I feel like I just stated some of the obvious.

On Forgiveness and Redemption

This is a pretty fundamental theme in a lot of Silmarillion fanfic and in the fandom generally, and one of major interest to me, so I wanted to try to pull together some of my thoughts on it. This is specifically in relation to Tolkien’s works - in the real world there can be all kinds of addititional sociopolitical dimensions that are too much to get into here.

In my view, there are two main elements around asking for forgiveness.

Yes, it is an apology; a statement of I recognize that I hurt you; I was wrong and I am sorry; I will change. This in itself can be beneficial and healing to the person who has been harmed, both in acknowledging that they did not deserve what was done to them, and in the implication of I repudiate my deeds; you do not need to fear me. (This is particularly important in a context like The Silmarillion, where you can end up with people living in the same land as the people who murdered them.)

But it is also more than that. It is a reversal of the power relationship that existed when the wrong was done, by the offender placing themself in the power of their victim. It’s an admission that they want forgiveness, and the right and the power to grant or to withhold it rests with person who has been wronged. This is why, for a request for forgiveness to mean anything, the person asking it can’t regard themself as entitled to recieve it; if someone responds to a refusal of forgiveness or a rejected apology by being angry or affronted, that’s an immediate sign that they were never sincerely repentant in the first place. To ask for forgiveness is to say I submit to your judgement, and I beg for your mercy. (This also reinforces the message of I am not a threat mentioned above: I am in your power.) The request for forgiveness acknowledges that forgiveness is not deserved, and that hatred/judgement/condemnation is. It’s an act of unconditional surrender.[1] The granting of forgiveness can’t be treated as something normal or pro forma; it’s an act of unmerited grace.

This is why I regard forgiveness as something that’s beneficial to both offender and victim, rather than as beneficial to the victim without reference to the offender (I forgive you because hatred makes me into someone I don’t like - though as Tolkien observes in his letters, this is in itself a valid reason for forgiveness/mercy) or as something the offender is selfishly seeking without regard for the victim.

Even if forgiveness is not granted, seeking it is beneficial to the offender in having taken responsibility and accepted judgement for their actions, and to the victim in being able to call the person that hurt them to account. If it is granted, it’s transformative and healing to both, changing guilt into gratitude and victim into benefactor.

I’ve also seen a fair amount of writing on the merits of redemption arcs (seeking forgiveness) relative to rehabilitation arcs (becoming a better person), and I think the emphases are going to vary from character to character.

To give examples: For Maedhros and Maglor (who are, unsurprisingly, the main inspirations for this essay), the main theme is going to redemption and seeking forgiveness because - despite their numerous crimes - by the time they’re willing/able to return to Aman (which would involve the renunciation of both Oath and Silmarils), the risk of reoffense is basically nil. There’s no desire to return to their previous behaviour; for goodness’ sakes, they didn’t even want to be doing those horrible things while they were doing them, and the impetus for their actions has now been removed. But that doesn’t change the fact that they’ve hurt a great many people, many of whom are going to find their presence in Valinor painful or frightening or both, and who have no reason to trust them. So their journey is going to be less about changing who they are, and more about how to address what they’ve already done.

An example on the flip side would be Saeros. His actual wrongdoing was comparatively minor in comparison to all the things that sprang from it; no reasonable person could hold him solely responsible for all the events of the Narn i Hîn Húrin, when so many other people’s bad decisions also played a role in it. He’s in the position of the one small stone that sets off an avalanche. But he still is the one who set it off. Mablung outright told him that he was doing Morgoth’s work (as was undoubtedly true; Morgoth needed Túrin out of Doriath, and had only the most indirect ways of achieving that; and what Glaurung does to Nienor is quite deliberately a takeoff on Saeros’ words, with her later death in a chasm also mirroring Saeros’) and Saeros ignored him, and Túrin and his mother and sister might all have lived long, peaceful and happy lives in Doriath, and Nargothrond might still have stood, if Saeros had, at one pivotal moment, just refrained from being a dick.

It’s not something that it would even make sense for him to go around apologizing to people for, when his own part in the events leading to the fall of Nagothrond and Doriath was so small. And the risk of any kind of reoccurrence of similar events is, again, basically nil. But the risk of Saeros continuing to be a prideful, bigoted asshole is pretty high - he’s had a lifetime’s experience at it! So his journey is going to be about recognizing the character and personality flaws that led to him being a tool of Morgoth[2] and endeavouring to correct them and become a different kind of person. And that’s something he could do without even needing to have any contact with the people he knew in his former life (and I think he’d be reluctant to seek them out anyway, out of embarrassment over his death as much as anything else).

[1] This is, I think, one of the reasons why the concept of forgiveness in political contexts (Canada and First Nations; the US and African-Americans; post-apartheid South Africa) has become so fraught in a lot of political discussion. In contexts where one group has been oppressed by another, and the group responsible for the oppression apologizes but continues to hold power over the oppressed, forgiveness can’t have this meaning. The offender retains power over the victim; all they’re really saying is we were wrong, but let’s put this behind us and move on, and the ‘moving on’ rarely involves any meaningful redress of the ongoing oppression. So the backlash against the idea of forgiveness in these contexts is understandable.

That’s in addition to the idea of forgiveness being something highly interpersonal, so that the concept of forgiving a government or institution is a bit fuzzy at the best of times.

On a completely separate note, I think this idea of forgiveness as involving an inversion of power relationships is why Saruman reacted so spitefully to being offered mercy. Judgement and vengeance are things that can be resisted, and that are at least an acknowledgement that you have successfully done spiritual damage to another person. But being granted mercy is the acceptance of a surrender that he never offered; he is now in Frodo’s power whether he wants to be or not.

Regardless, I still really enjoyed writing my analysis to give my two cents on the progression of Hanako and Nene’s relationship, and feel free to add your interpretations after reading.

This post will cover the first two topics (which will be explained below), since...

The rest of the text will be under the cut since it includes SPOILERS for...let’s say the latest manga chapter to be safe.

Thus, let us pull back the curtain and begin.

For the sake of organization, I will describe how this post is going to be divided. There are four main topics to be discussed. First, is the general cycle I have witnessed in terms of Hananene moments. Second, will be a...progression bar?? Timeline?? Basically topic 2 will discuss how Hanako’s feelings towards Nene have progressed in phases from “only friends” to “sh*t I’m in love”. Topic 3 is the inverse discussing the progression of Yashiro’s feelings. Finally, I plan to conclude with some brief thoughts on the next steps in their relationship.

Unfortunately, as mentioned before, the secret guidelines of tumblr text posts deemed the original analysis too long. Thus, this post only discusses topics 1 & 2.

So, without further ado, let’s begin.

1: The Hananene Whirlpool (TM of Solitaire)

Alright, so full discretion, I’m probably not the first person to notice this pattern, but I am the first person I know to properly summarize it.

So what is the Hananene Whirlpool?

And what’s a whirlpool doing here??

I chose this term over cycle because cycles can remain in roughly the same place when going back to a point. However, Hananene’s relationship doesn’t work like that. Each cycle pulls them deeper and deeper into their feelings, much like a whirlpool that sucks any objects trapped in it closer to the centre.

As the visual attempts to depict, there are six stages in this whirlpool of ever increasing feelings.

1) Yashiro acquires a (pretty valid tbh) concern about the events or revelations of a trip into a boundary.

2) This is the one step that varies, but it accomplishes the same end purpose. Either Yashiro will approach Hanako about her new concern or Hanako will check in on Yashiro since she’s been avoiding him (’cause of the aforementioned concern). Both methods get Hanako and Yashiro in the same place to chat.

3) Once together, Yashiro brings up that new concern that has been weighing on or bothering her...She’s emotionally troubled, okay. This is important! Because...

4) Hanako makes himself more vulnerable in order to boost Yashiro’s mood.

5) This causes a romantic atmosphere since Hanako has temporarily taken off the mask he hides behind, allowing deeper feelings to bleed through and Yashiro to witness this.

6) So, Hanako has to murder the mood in cold blood. Love letter letdowns, Christmas tree hair in summer, and being shoved off a fricking cloud. Anything to try and restore the distance between them.

It somewhat works...But it’s an undeniable fact that the two are getting closer. And I can prove it with the next topics!

2: Hanako’s Feelings ~ A Timeline

For these timelines, there are three major stages that classify their feelings towards the other.

“Only Friends”

“Highschool Crush”

“Oh scales I’m in love”

While one might expect Hanako’s feelings to be the most difficult to determine and thus more interesting, it is quite the opposite.

If you notice, we rarely ever get any sort of internal monologue from our ghost boy. I can’t think of one canon scenario where this happened (I could be mistaken). Therefore, the feelings Hanako holds towards Yashiro are represented by actions over words. And the body cannot lie as easily as the mind, making his true feelings easier to figure out.

Disclaimer: I will not be counting the past Amanes in this timeline. There has been no canon evidence that he consciously remembers Yashiro’s time travel shenanigans, and so the impact of those events on his feelings remain unclear.

With that out of the way, let me bring up a surprising take:

Hanako only started having a crush on Yashiro towards the end of chapter 1.

It’s tempting to believe that Hanako already liked Yashiro before or not long after their first meeting due to this line:

However, I would like to bring up two points. First, this line doesn’t gain a super romantic context until he connects it to himself in particular.

Secondly, I don’t know about you, but I had friends who would say things like “Anybody would do for you, huh?” to tease them or give them a reality check. It’s not an inherently shippy phrase until Hanako makes it such.

Though, this implies that his feelings have changed throughout the chapter. When exactly? I’d argue it’s...right...here...

A running trend that occurs before Hanako allows himself to get closer to Yashiro tends to be her being upset...often because of our No 7.

Guilt.

It’s a core part of Hanako’s character. Whatever happened that led to Tsukasa’s death clearly weighs on him, despite evidence of being abused and mistreated--a situation that could cause many to snap.

He is terrified and regretful for how he has and can hurt others, and this is a key reason why he wears his more lighthearted mask. So, when he sees a girl that he clearly respects by this point and knows has less than a year to live be genuinely heartbroken about what he did...it was bound to trigger his overwhelming guilt. Then, the response of attempting amends for his actions leads him to try and stop and/or check in on her. Only to see she didn’t give her Senpai the scale. Since she learned the error of her ways. Another amendable attribute that attracts enough attention for assistant assignment.

Plus, a highschool crush.

It’s honestly more simple to tell that he’s started to crush on her after this point from his increasingly flirty behaviour.

Pinning her against a wall, “You have me,”, that “magic spell”...

An important thing to note is that his actions are...overly flirty...in a way that makes you question their sincerity. Capitalizing on his previously established trait of being a jokester, he’s able to play off these actions as teasing. Nothing serious. Probably because he already understands a longterm relationship between the two would be nearly unobtainable. At least, he’s able squeeze out the most romantic moments he can without worrying about a real relationship.

Yashiro has made it extremely clear she’s not his type,

So he’ll just reject him right?

This is where we cross over into L-O-V-E territory dear readers.

You can probably guess what scene I’ll cite as the change, but the seeds of the shift are planted all the way back in chapter 5.

The Misaki Stairs is the first point of the story in which Yashiro is truly in danger, subject to the extreme power and control Mysteries hold over their domain. At that moment, Hanako was powerless and there was a decent chance he couldn’t reach Yashiro in time. He did--thankfully--but the whole experience noticeably rattled him. To the point where he does this:

Decidedly more suggestive than his previous actions and containing a protection spell both contribute to the idea that Yashiro’s close calls at the Misaki Stairs were what spurred him to do this.

Blah, blah, blah. I think we all remember what happens after this, Hanako digging his own grave after going a step too far.

He doesn’t realize this mistake right after the kiss though, with his comment about the confession tree keeping up his trend of flirty behaviour.

It is only at the following moment in Chapter 8 does the realization strike him and the true transformation begins.

Yashiro is upset because of him (dejavu) Because she was expecting, was wanting, an actual confession.

Hanako is noticeably caught off guard for most of this scene, gaping in shock and stammering out a seemingly half-baked excuse for the kiss on the cheek.

Yashiro wanted a confession. Yashiro might return any romantic feelings he has (something previously thought impossible). Yashiro is crying. And it’s all his fault.

So, what does he do?

For the first time in the series, Hanako takes off his mask, allowing himself to be vulnerable and fully honest with her. He opens himself up, and the chance Yashiro could like him back props that the door slightly open. Though his ever increasing feelings for her become enough to push the door even wider open.

We can confirm his behaviour changed after this event since this pretty much marks the decline of the constant flirting from Hanako’s side. It still holds on for a bit into the 4 PM Bookstacks, but it’s rough once per chapter frequency beforehand has certainly diminished. Plus, after this point marks the casual contact that’s trademark to the ship.

Adding that the Hananene Whirlpool does not start until after the 4 PM Bookstacks--the first boundary visited after the Confession Tree chapter--and it requires Hanako to open up and not maintain a joking front, I think we have our winner.

Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Chapter 16: The Little Mermaid (Part 1)

Previously: as one of you guys said last chapter, we “went from good boy hours to sad boy hours in a flash”, and I honestly couldn't have said it better myself. Yashiro and Kou are both very good children that just want to look after their new ghost friend (and each other) and I just（*´▽`*) love them very much. But yeah, the last chapter started with an incredibly wholesome and emotional premise and by the end that happened. I’m both excited and terrified to delve back into the story.

Now onto the next chapter!

[You can ignore this but if you’re interested, here’s a small update of where have I been lately: as I’ve mentioned before, around the moment the quarantines started to take effect where I live, I caught a cold and later I found out that I had laryngitis, so all that with the additional anxiety regarding the state the world is in right now, I really wasn’t feeling well enough to take the time to read and write the recaps for the chapters. I’m fine now, I started to feel better by last week. I’m a very anxious person by nature and while my family and friends are doing well, being quarantined this long really didn’t leave me in the best headspace since I tend to worry too much (both of my parents are over 60 years old and two of my best friends each have a family member who underwent heart surgeries recently). Also, I wasn’t sure if posting these recaps would be a good idea with everything that’s going on in the world right now. But I’ve come to the conclusion that everyone would probably welcome a distraction and if these recaps can provide that for someone besides myself (since writing them will give me something to do), then I should go right ahead. So.....yeah......If you’re reading this, please remember to take care and follow the steps that your region has implemented to stay healthy and stop the spread of the virus.]

Okay so before we begin, I have a confession to make: I ended up seeing a spoiler (well, two, but I will mention the other one when it becomes relevant). I’m honestly surprised that it didn’t happen sooner considering how quickly Instagram knows when I start a new series, but yeah, it was bound to happen since I’m pretty behind with the story. I saw a screenshot of one of the anime episodes (idk which one since I stopped watching it when I picked up the manga after watching episode 4) and I saved it so I could put it here:

sooooooooooooo..........yeah.........it’s kind of a bummer. But hey! At least I know one of the theories I threw out there was right. Although, it also brings up a lot more questions regarding their home life because..........why was Amane so beat up when (it seems) he had at least one family member around when he was alive? where does this other child fit into the story? Did he also go to the same school? Does Tsuchigomori know him? Also he looks real cute???? But Hanako looked so terrified when he appeared at the end of last chapter that it makes me not trust him immediately???? You all are probably saying in your heads “well if you just start the fucking chapter you will get some answers” and you know what???? You’re right, I should, damn

Ohhhh right! This is the start of another volume and it looks like our two main boys are on the cover this time.

are you really gonna post the cover page again? you ask. And yes, yes, I will. It’s not my fault that the art style is so good. Things I noticed: it’s silly but I love how Hanako’s disregard for personal space it’s an ongoing factor even on the cover with how he’s grabbing Kou’s face; I really like the contrast between their expressions (how cheeky Hanako looks vs how serious Kou looks); and since they both look like they’re ready for a fight, I’m guessing that this particular volume will possibly present challenges for these two.

The next coloured page is also wonderful. My babies look so cute and ready to tell some ghost stories. I just wanna ruffle their hair, they’re so precious.

Then we have the index and by the looks of it, this volume will focus on two arcs.

And here’s the cover page for this chapter! ...........god, I’ve barely reached the beginning of the chapter, why do I ramble so much.

Anyway, “the little mermaid”, huh? Judging by that title and by the art here, I’m guessing that title refers to Yashiro. Also, there’s a big ass claw on the left side of the page, so does this mean that the mermaid from the first chapter is coming back? Because Hanako said that he had only managed to drive her away momentarily, right? That would be really interesting!

Now directing our attention to the right side of the page...... (⚆.⚆) ......I’m guessing that this is directly related to last chapter’s cliffhanger, if Hanako’s terrified expression is anything to go by.......oh boy, this is gonna be so much f u n

Huh, that’s interesting. “She helped me make it here.” Does that mean that he wasn’t able to be in the school for some reas- wait wait a second. Idk why I’m just now putting two and two together but this boy is also dead, right? So where was he? And he honestly looks just like Hanako, so does that mean they died at around the same time? Did he also go to this school? Because Amane’s attachment to this school is clear (even if he had to take the role of “Hanako-san”) and well, there was also that thing Kou said about his grandmother sealing him away but we don’t know much about that. Would his brother also have a reason to be at the school, and not only that, but also to then have to leave the place? And a big enough reason that he needed someone else’s help to get back, at that?

Another interesting thing: so now we have the confirmation that the suspicious girl is actually his assistant. That brings up the following questions: does Amane’s brother also fills in for “Hanako-san”? Like, is it like a gatcha where you can get either of them when you summon them and lucks decides your fate? Also, with Yashiro and Amane, she became his assistant as an exchange for her wish to become human again? So, I’m thinking that if he also serves as “Hanako-san”, then she could have become his assistant in exchange for a wish, and the question then would be: what did she wish for? And that is tied to other questions that surround her such as: who is she? what are her goals?

Is this recap mostly questions and no answers? yes, that’s how it be, if you’re here expecting me to give you good answers, I’m sorry in advance lol

(ﾟдﾟ；) Σ(ﾟДﾟ|||) ahhhhhh he looks so shaken and ready to cry omg please back away and leave him alone. What is their story??? It’s clear that it is tragic but what could bring about such a reaction? Spoilers: it’s probably gonna destroy me :))))

OHHHHH!!!! LOOK AT MY GIRL GO! Hell yeah, protect your boy!! but also the fact that Hanako was so startled that he couldn’t even react fast enough to protect himself even though he had his knife in front of him is very concerning

Oh? I thought the bottle only had tea/water. Why did it do that to him? Because this doesn’t happen to all apparitions, right?

And just like that, he’s gone. Well. that was certainly a way to make an entrance.

........................okay, listen. I know I said that their story was probably tragic but I was trying to avoid thinking of this possibility because there’s something incredibly heartbreaking about the prospect. And the fact that Hanako looks so terrified only adds a layer of unease to the whole thing. If Hanako did kill him, then it shines a different light to one of the questions I asked before: “why was Amane so beat up when (apparently) he had at least one family member around when he was alive?” because........yikes. I think I had also asked before where would his parents be in the story (since it was still possible that the injuries were inflicted by bullies) and with this development, I’m even more concerned. Since, again, if Hanako killed his own brother and we take into account the rest of the information we’ve been given so far, it’s very possible that it was done in self-defence. And since Hanako was so reluctant to tell Tsuchigomori anything regarding the person who did that to him (going to the extent of saying he forgave them), the culprit being a family member is not farfetched at all.

Oh, no, sweetie-pie (ಥ﹏ಥ) He looks so distraught! It seems like he had a flashback of some sort judging by him snapping out of it at the end. The evidence just keeps on piling up against his brother and i’m very stre s s ed

Ahhhh and he’s all wobbly while apologizing to her and he leaves and they’re just alone and sad and the donuts are ruined. I’m :c sad :CC

............................is that a fish? because it doesn’t look like the mermaid, so maybe she sent her “minions”? Hanako said that the fish work for the mermaids, right? I’m assuming she’s sending someone to spy on Yashiro since she most likely isn’t ready to give up Yashiro yet (even if Hanako has lessen the effects of the curse).

Next, we see that Yashiro is still thinking about what happened with Hanako while Aoi looks worried about her. Yashiro says “I guess people from different species really can’t understand each other” and “Maybe it would’ve been better if I were a supernatural too” and I mean, I see where she’s coming from. But at the same time, that’s not all there is to it. Yes, it’s obvious that they are gonna have different mindsets, not only because Hanako is a ghost but also because of what he experienced when he was alive. However, I think Hanako’s reluctance to share his past has more to do with personal walls he has probably built around himself than with him being a supernatural. Like, yes, we know that he has had contact with other apparitions in the school, but who knows when was the last time he had the chance to interact with someone as a friend? Even when he was alive we know that he didn’t have friends from his class. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that while I understand Yashiro’s sentiment, her becoming a supernatural wouldn’t really help the situation.

Well, it looks like someone is conveniently ready to grant that wish and judging by the bubbles (?) around the dialogue bubbles, I think it’s the fish from before. And to that, I say no, thanks, chief.

Also

I feel so bad for Aoi, she must be so worried about Yashiro’s ongoing track record of talking to the air.

....................god, everyone is gonna think she’s off her rocker if they don’t think so already

Pfffffffft I love her so much, she’s so silly

But anyway, yes, the fish claim that they are here to “release her from the clutches of that loathsome school mystery” which sounds like a convoluted way to say that they want to take her away. “Our law states that those who have eaten the flesh and blood of our master will eventually become our next master” ohhhhh okay so that’s why they were being so polite, I had thought that they were just trying to butter her up.

Yashiro, no! Don’t fall for it!! I’m not saying that they’re lying about her new status, I’m just saying that she needs to consider the fact that the “men” are most likely not actual men if the fact that the mermaid was a fish with a face is anything to go by. Also, my girl is way too weak in front of the promise of ikemen oh boy please don’t fall for it

They say that they’ve been watching Yashiro these past few days and they think that the way Hanako treats her is “far too barbaric”.

Okay, I’m gonna stop you right there. 1) The donut incident: Yes, Hanako shouldn’t have treated her like that, but it’s obvious that he was going through some serious stuff at the moment. 2) He doesn’t speak about himself: I think I mentioned this even during the 4pm bookstacks arc, but that’s Hanako’s choice. It’s his own life story and he gets to decide when to share it. While it would be good for him to open up more to Yashiro since she clearly wants to be his friend and get to know him better, that doesn’t mean it’s gonna be easy. 3) He takes advantage of her: well, he has been quite reckless at certain points (like when he threw her down the waterfall at Yako’s boundary and when he unknowingly played with her feelings during the confession tree arc), he’s always done his best to protect her from harm. 4) Hanako thinks nothing of her: now that’s just plain wrong. As I’ve just mentioned, he always tries to protect her and we’ve seen in subtle ways that he’s clearly grown fond of her over time. He’s a teasing little shit, but he’s not a bad guy that would string her along without a care in the world. Granted, they can’t possibly know all this, but still. Don’t go dissing my boy like that.

So, they give her a vial with the mermaid’s blood and if she drinks it, her bond with Hanako will be overwritten and her bond with the mermaid will be made official. Oh, and they also say that she then “will cease to transform in reaction to water”................doesn’t- doesn’t that mean she will just be a fish all the time? right??

Okay so they gave her one day to give them an answer.

There he is!! Update: still hot

Yashiro went to him to get him to stop her but he’s really not being helpful. He asks her if he talked with Hanako and Kou. Yashiro says it would be too awkward to talk with Kou after the donuts were destroyed and like........I get it, but still, he would completely understand. Kou is one of the most wholesome boys in existence, he would not hold that against you AND more importantly, he would love to help you in anything you needed. And oh! she says she tried talking to Hanako but she hasn’t been able to find him lately. I’m a bit surprised but also really glad that she realised that this was something that Hanako needed to be aware of. It sucks that Hanako is (most likely) avoiding her, even if it is understandable.

Yashiro points out that Tsuchigomori has known Hanako for a long time and asks him if he could tell her anything about his past. And again, I feel the need to point out that he’s probably gonna tell her when he’s ready to and going about it behind his back is not the best idea.

I’m glad to see that Tsuchigomori is on the same wavelength as me. Hanako obviously carries a heavy burden on his shoulders and it’s best for the truth to come out from his own mouth.

Awww, no, sweetie, it’s not that. I think he does trust you but he’s shielded himself from other people for so long that he has a hard time opening up to anyone. And yeah, Tsuchigomori tells her he’s probably afraid of her finding out (which, again, is understandable) and that, at any rate, she should make her own decision and to make sure that decision is one that she won’t regret.

Well, speak of the devil. Look who was eavesdropping! I’m actually okay with this since Hanako really needed to hear all that (not only what the situation itself is but also how she feels about their relationship).

(ಥ﹏ಥ) someone please give this sweet boy a hug, he needs it (ಥ﹏ಥ)

Atta girl, Yashiro. She’s been having a slow character development as the story progresses and it’s honestly great to see. To me, this shows a good contrast between how easily she jumped from crush to crush and how dedicated she is to stick with Hanako and learn more about him. Yes, they are just friends, but the chemistry they have is undeniable, so I still think it’s a fair comparison.

..................I said they would be fish but still omfg. This manga really is a treasure pffffft

Oh, that’s the end of the chapter..........that felt short. Still a solid chapter, though. I like the slow buildup we’re establishing with Hanako and Yashiro and their relationship and I’m really excited to see how they develop it.
