Highlander (1986)

La película cuenta la historia de los inmortales, humanos que solo pueden morir mediante la decapitación y que han existido a lo largo de los tiempos. Uno de ellos, el protagonista de la película, es Connor MacLeod, del clan escocés MacLeod, mientras que su enemigo es conocido como El Kurgan; junto a ambos personajes, la película muestra o menciona a otros cuatro inmortales, aunque parece claro que el número de los mismos sería mucho mayor.

El destino de los inmortales es combatir entre ellos en duelos para alcanzar el Premio, que obtendrá el vencedor del duelo final.

La naturaleza exacta del Premio no queda clara, aunque parece consistir en un poder y sabiduría que permitiría al ganador guiar al mundo a una nueva era ya sea de paz u oscuridad, dependiendo de la naturaleza del vencedor.

El clan MacLeod:

De acuerdo con la película, Connor MacLeod nació en el año 1518 en las Highlands (Tierras Altas) escocesas, en la aldea de Glenfinnan a orillas del Lago Shiel. En 1536, a la edad de 18 años, Connor partió con su clan a combatir frente al clan Frazer rival, en lo que sería su primera batalla. Entre las filas del clan Frazer se encontraba el Kurgan (Clancy Brown), un gigantesco inmortal de las estepas rusas nacido en el I milenio a. C., que al parecer tenía conocimiento previo de la condición de Connor como pre inmortal, algo que el propio Connor desconocía.

El Kurgan consiguió herir mortalmente a Connor atravesándolo con su espada, aunque fue repelido por los parientes del escocés antes de que consiguiera decapitarles. Connor fue trasladado a su aldea, donde le fue administrada la extremaunción debido a la gravedad de la herida, rodeado de sus acongojados parientes, aunque tras una noche de agonía consiguió restablecerse asombrosamente.

Su clan le acusó entonces de brujería, maltratándolo y disponiéndose a quemarlo en la hoguera, aunque su primo Angus (James Cosmo) intercedió por él, convenciendo al clan para desterrarlo. Connor consiguió así salvarse de la hoguera, aunque rompiendo todo vínculo con su clan y su tierra de origen.

El exilio:

Connor se estableció finalmente en Glen Coe, donde contrajo matrimonio con Heather MacDonald (Beatie Edney), su primera esposa, y donde aprendió el trabajo de herrero de su suegro. En 1541 Connor fue localizado por un inmortal mucho mayor, que se presentó como Juan Sánchez Villalobos Ramírez (Sean Connery).

Ramírez asumió de inmediato la tarea de adiestrar a Connor en su condición de inmortal, explicándole el origen de los inmortales, la búsqueda del Premio y sus reglas:

Ramírez confesó a Connor que su nombre español era en realidad un pseudónimo, debido al cargo que desempeñaba como Espadero Mayor del rey Carlos I de España. Según la novelización, su verdadero nombre era Tak-Ne, y era oriundo de Egipto, donde había nacido en el año 896 a. C. Se había convertido en inmortal en el 851 a. C., a los 45 años de edad, viajando desde entonces por el mundo hasta llegar a Japón a principios del siglo VI a. C. Allí había contraído matrimonio con la princesa Shakiko, su tercera esposa e hija del herrero Masamune, un genio de la metalurgia adelantado a su tiempo, quien regaló a Tak-Ne su emblemática katana en el 593 a. C.

Ramírez aconsejó a Connor dejar a Heather, puesto que suponía un gran dolor enfrentarse a la muerte de la persona amada. Tal como contó al escocés.

the thing is. the writers did include dialog of Ganondorf calling rawru out for descending from the heavens and taking over hyrule. thus basically undermining his legitimacy as king

like. it's in the game. is the issue handled well? no. after all it is the Evil Guy From The Desert Whom No One Should Side With spouting the anticolonialist rhetoric. like yeah that definitely sucks but. hey at least the talking point exists in canon.

no like, hey someone actually told a king of hyrule to his face that he had no business ruling anything and like. c'mon it's just too good I can't just leave it there

and like for that reason I'd be hard pressed to fault anyone for seeing rawru as a Nasty Self-Important Colonizer Who Made Hyrule Bad. Does the game actually want you to perceive him that way? probably not, you're supposed to side with him, definitely. butttttt what if I don't want to, yknow. what if I want to despise him a little. as a treat.

and like. Ganondorf is probably definitely trying to weaponize resentment against the Zonai rule to further his own destructive, self-obsessed agenda for sure. aaaannd once again I sure would have enjoyed it if characters that aren't evil got to question rawru's legitimacy butttt it's a Zelda game so nope nope nope all sages from every race agree with and defer to king rawru because they're good boys and girls nothing to see here :)

Not to bring up the Mapleshade discourse again but your takes are so refreshing to see

I swear people are incapable of having nuanced takes about her/her book. It's either "Maple did nothing wrong" or "Everything is Maple's fault."

Like yes Mapleshade made bad decisions and wasn't justified in killing people, but the death of her kits was not solely her fault.

Thank you!! I get the Mapleshade defense posts got annoying and yes the whole "she would be the guardian angel of all children despite abusing a child for a whole book" was annoying but man. i am not interested in pretending like appledusk is interesting and that i wasn't excited for mapleshade to fucking Get Him.

I think the discourse surrounding itself around "who was in the right vs. who was wrong" kind of distracts around the broader writing issues that MV has (not to say i haven't fallen into that trend but come ON we do not need to pretend oakstar was reasonable to exile three children because mapleshade lied to protect her three VERY ILLEGAL CHILDREN). What is the message of this novella? Sure, it's a character piece meant to tell me more about her...but what does it actually say? What is the message I'm supposed to glean from this?

@/feathermedics is the one who pointed this out and his tags helped me reframe MV in my mind as less of a backstory/morally gray tale or whatever and more of a cautionary tale. The actions of the individuals, specifically those breaking the code, are the ones given the most scrutiny; the system that encouraged the exile of three innocent children is never to be criticized.

Damn I miss the high of the first half of jjk

#everything post the zenin clan massacre….. like what is going on #foreshadowing: dropped #female characters: ruined by misogyny #plot: rushed and confusing #fun horror element: straight up gone #like I dunno…. the first half of the series had some flaws too #but they were minor and it genuinely felt like the story was Doing Something and handling the characters well #now it just feels like…. a mess and every time I see new leaks I just kinda wince #like I wanna stay positive and I have my fingers crossed that it still ends at least mostly satisfying…. but I am def losing hope it will #el oh el #anyways #kaz rambles
