What two Danganronpa characters would make the best Doctor Who companions?

Like most of my DR posts, this just popped into my head at random at 1 am, but just off the dome, some possible answers might be:

Kaede and Ryoma. They have a pretty good rapport, Kaede is enough of a loose canon that she can get into situations and generate plot for episodes, Ryoma can have a series-long arc about seeing the value of his own life through experiencing the wonders of the universe and having to fight to survive them. Kaede rallies people who are in rough situations, Ryoma befriends small animals. (Series-long story arc of them falling in love? I'm ambivalent and prefer them as friends, but it's an option.)

Makoto and Byakuya. Makoto provides the necessary "everyman excited and confused by things" energy and his luck gets him into situations, Byakuya creates problems by trying to assert independence/control and casually bickers with the Doctor. Makoto befriends people everywhere he goes and embodies something the Doctor really loves about humanity, Byakuya occasionally manages to perform hostile takeovers in space. Sometimes the classic damsel scenario plays out where one of them gets kidnapped; when Byakuya and the Doctor find Makoto, he's friends with all his captors; when Makoto and the Doctor find Byakuya, he's...king? Of something? Now? (I kid. But also, series-long story arc of them falling in love, or they're just already dating at the start.)

Sonia and Akane. Two sides of the fish-out-of-water coin. In episodes where the setting is of the "trapped on a space ship with a crew running out of rations as they careen toward a dying star" variety, Sonia plays the role of "out-of-her-depth companion who mostly reacts to stuff" while Akane thrives in keeping everyone from starving too quickly, identifying when someone's temper is about to flare up and redirecting the energy to something productive or playfully competitive, and any running or climbing or physical exertion the situation deems necessary. In episodes where the setting is of the "alien royalty throwing a gala" variety, Akane plays the role of "out-of-her-depth companion who mostly reacts to stuff" while Sonia picks up on the cultural norms of this unfamiliar society, does her best to learn the language and courtesies, etc. And of course, each gets opportunities to shine in environments that aren't their usual fare, until both are really good at both, but that's the barebones model. (Also, series-long romance arc.)

Honestly, too many possibilities for one post; I might need to just make a tag for this.

The Not-So Big Sleet and Dingo Interpersonal Relationship HC Post

🦔 Hedgehog Triplets 🎸

Sonia is one of the few people Dingo actually respects. She’s by far his favorite of the hedgehog trio. Not in the creepy way the source material thought was funny. In a “finally a worthy opponent” way. Her acrobatics keep him guessing, and for someone so small she can throw a mean left hook. Sonia pities Dingo. She thinks deep down there’s some good in him, that Sleet’s a bad influence and a controlling, manipulative force. Meanwhile, Sleet doesn’t give Sonia much thought beyond “she’s the girl hedgehog”. Her voice irritates him. His voice irritates her.

Sleet sees parts of his child self within Manic. In another life, they could maybe be friends. That’s a big maybe. In any case, Sleet finds his scrappy, sticky-fingered nature mildly endearing on good days. Dingo isn’t so keen, largely because he can never get a rise out of him. Manic’s too chill. Eerily chill to Dingo. Manic likes to play mind games with both of them.

Sleet and Dingo both hate Sonic. Dingo a little less so because he thinks his jokes can be funny sometimes. But in general they want that good-for-nothing cerulean gopher gone. He’s the cause of all of their problems. If Sonic hadn’t taken down Robotnik’s factory, they wouldn’t be stuck with this lousy job. If Sonic hadn’t reunited with his siblings, the Freedom Fighters wouldn’t have been emboldened. Sonic loves kicking their butts. He finds Sleet and Dingo’s dynamic endlessly entertaining. Like Manic, he toys with them.

🤖 Doctor Robotnik 🍳

Intially, Sleet thought Robotnik was somewhat admirable. A self-made man with unfathomable cunning and intellect. So while Sleet certainly didn’t idolize him—Sleet only idolizes himself—Robotnik’s talents invited a golf clap at least. Suffice to say, things have changed. Sleet wants nothing more than to put a hole in Robotnik’s chest. The feeling is mutual. Robotnik would get rid of him. He could get rid of him and Dingo at any point in time. Alas, Sleet and Dingo are the cheapest bounty hunters a penny-pinching tyrant can buy, and they do usually pull through in matters that don’t involve those meddling hedgehogs. He’s got what he paid for: C-tier mercenaries that provide a laugh every now and then with their naivety and woeful ineptitude. Dingo doesn’t care much for Robotnik either, but the cool weapons make it worth it. After embracing the Eggman name, Robotnik becomes even more unhinged, and Dingo, as someone who lives for chaos, prefers him that way. Sleet, on the other hand, is scared shitless.

Something I’ve been wanting to do for about a week: several of my Nintendo ships but I say which would be the Doctor and which would be the Doctor’s companion (because I love Doctor Who)

• I’ll start with my favourite ship: Captain Falcon x Dr. Stewart (F-Zero) — as much as I compare Robert to the 10/14th Doctor, I’m gonna say Falcon is very obviously the Doctor here

• Falcon x Samus (Smash) — honestly either would work perfectly as the Doctor and the other would probably just be a Donna-style companion

• Falcon x Snake (Smash) — Falcon is the Doctor? Idk anything about Metal Gear sorry

• Mewtwo x Lucario (Pokémon but specifically the ones in Smash) — I stand by my claim that Mewtwo would work well as the Doctor in this relationship

• Samus x Peach (Smash) — say what you want about the Mario Movie, there is no way Peach is the Doctor

• Nessa x Sonia (Pokémon) — Nessa is a Gym Leader in a region with a heavy focus on the Gym Challenge and no Elite Four and Sonia is an aspiring Professor. Champions and Professors are basically the Pokémon equivalent to monarchs/prime ministers/presidents which basically means these two have (approximately, I’m pretty certain Sonia ends up as the new Professor by the end) the same amount of power over Galar as each other so this basically means they could both be the Doctor. Also Galar is based on Britain which is where Doctor Who is from so yeah idk

• Calem x Serena (Pokémon) — basically the same deal as Falcon x Samus but probably more Yaz-style than Donna-style

• Serena x Shauna (Pokémon) — any ship involving a player character and a rival is gonna have the player be the Doctor unless the rival is Nemona (or maybe Gladion). Same goes for friends like Lillie

• Baba x Jack Levin (F-Zero) — Baba has the energy to be the Doctor and I think Jack would make a great companion

• Princia Ramode x Lily Flyer (F-Zero) — Princia has the energy but Lily has the experience (despite being younger) so I’ll say Lily for now

• Jody Summer x Kate Alen (F-Zero) — Jody has the experience so I’m gonna say Jody for now

• Gwen x Siobhán (Wii Sports) — Gwen is the Doctor

• Megan x Audie (Animal Crossing) — Megan (being a Normal villager) is smarter and probably a better fit for the Doctor than Audie, even if Audie has the energy. Audie might work better as an 11-style Doctor though

• Adaman x Irida (Pokémon) — see Falcon x Samus. It’s literally the same ship dynamic

• Flick x CJ (Animal Crossing) — honestly don’t think either would work as the Doctor

• Samus x Madeline (Metroid) — Samus is the Doctor, no question

• Leif x Kicks (Animal Crossing) — Kicks is the Doctor because Leif is obviously a companion

• My various pairings for Tom Nook (Animal Crossing) — Isabelle is probably about as likely as Tom to be the Doctor, if not more (because of Smash), Sable is a companion, Blathers could work as the Doctor (with his fear of bugs played similarly to 9’s fear of the Daleks) and Redd is the Master

Thinking about which Doctor each group of Danganronpa Doctor Who Companions would best be matched to, and I feel like Byakuya and Makoto would be GREAT with Nine. Like, the banter between Nine and Byakuya would be great, and Makoto's optimism would be a good influence on both of them. Nine would fully encourage the degree of sexual tension Makoto and Byakuya generate.

Kaede and Ryoma should be matched up with Eleven, based primarily on my knee-jerk feeling that Ryoma should not be around Nine or Ten. Actually, I feel like Nine would get along well with Ryoma, but his feelings from the Time War are too raw. I think Eleven is kind of where the Doctor needs to be for there to be a productive amount of friction between him and Ryoma. Ryoma's despondent outlook and Eleven's kind of callous "Fear me; I've killed all of them," energy would, I think, react together in an interesting way and introduce the possibility of them pulling each other out of their bad coping mechanisms, whereas I think Nine and Ten would be a bit too matchy with Ryoma. Kaede could get along with any Doctor, though she and Eleven would be a terrifying pair, as far as their reactions to attractive women are concerned.

Sonia and Akane should be matched up with Ten. People would constantly mistake them for a throuple, and I kinda don't hate it. Seriously, just imagine Ten doing those sad "can't save everyone" eyes and meanwhile Sonia's doing her determined arm flex. Ten doing his delighted "this is a new experience" look and Akane running past him to a banquet table of alien food. Also, despite him being a nine hundred year old alien with two hearts, Akane would forever think of him as a kind of wimpy guy she needs to defend in physical fights, and there's a nice 50/50 split between times she's saved him and times he's saved her. Sonia is the "stop wandering off!" companion, and Akane is the "stop touching things!" companion. They could get along with Nine, too, but they should be kept away from Eleven at all costs. (Though that's more because Moffat's writing shouldn't touch Akane with a ten foot pole.)

And for the finals...

I was standing before the desk of my doctoral dissertation adviser who was angrily telling me that I was not going about my dissertation in a way that suited him. He shouted at me, from his intimidating height, that my master's thesis adviser had told him I had pressured him unmercifully too and hadn't asked his advice either all along as I should have. I asked my fuming educator, as calmly as I could, why my master's adviser had never indicated this to me. I suggested that if he hadn't approved of the way I was proceeding, he should have said something to me at the time. And that since he always signed everything I took to him to sign, and since he had not stood in the way of my receiving my master's degree, I had simply assumed he approved.

Even as I asked the question, however, I knew the answer. I hadn't behaved femininely. I hadn't asked their advice. I hadn't acted as if I weren't capable of doing all this without their help. Hadn't, in short, acted incompetent, helpless, childish, and infinitely grateful for every little scrap of attention or advice they, as superior beings, had given me. I was twenty-eight years old when I began my master's research. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and how to go about doing it. I proposed it to my adviser. He agreed. I did it. That was that—I thought.

Oh, but not so. I didn't lean on him. To me he was just part of the red tape. I cut through him as quickly as possible. And I had no time to linger. Already we had one child and were ready to conceive another. I had to move faster almost than humanly possible, and I did.

Now my doctoral adviser had heard from my previous master that I had not been sufficiently humble and impressed (did not respect the priesthood enough, meaning the men). But this one wasn't going to make the same mistake. He'd show me who was boss. I understood this as women understand it, not intellectually, just in the flesh of my face as he scowled at it, just in the resignation of my weary-with-watching-male-ego-signs flesh. And I knew exactly what to do about it, without thinking, without strategizing—cry. So he would know I wasn't trying to show I was as smart as he was and didn't need him to tell me what to do next. Cry—so he would realize I was just another weak little woman and he had no cause for alarm. Cry—so he would feel bigger and more rational, and still, above all else, still blessedly in control.

So I cried on purpose that day, and because I did I became Dr. Johnson a year later, moving with great speed through a system designed to slow doctoral candidates down. Because I cried.

If men hate to be thus manipulated, then they must allow us to be real, they must not force us to manipulate their egos in order to live a full human life. I hate such machinations. I despise them with all my heart. But women are forced to resort to them because men won't otherwise allow us to exist. And we have a right to life.
