Just finished reading At Night all Blood is Black by David Diop.

It is set during WWI and follows the story of Alfa Ndiaye and his more-than-brother Mademba who are soldiers in the war fighting for France against Germany.

In just about 150 pages this book deeply touched me with its description of war and how it affects the morality of men. The repercussions of war; physical, mental and emotional destruction of a human being and how participation in war can dehumanise us completely, are shown with such subtlety and ease in language.

There we so many quotable lines that really make you think for a while.

Page 64 “That’s war: it’s when God lags behind the music of men, when he can’t untangle the threads of so many fates at the same time.”

It was only the final 3 chapters that got me bit confused with the psychosis of the main character but other than that this book was easily a 4/5

This story takes place during World War 1, with our main character Alfa Ndiaye, a Senegalese man, part of the 'Chocolate' Army fighting for the French. Unable to mercy kill a badly wounded friend, he descends into madness and starts murdering his enemies in increasingly gruesome ways. I loved this, finding the prose nasty but detailing such a fascinating perspective of a part of history of which I know very little.

"HERMANOS DE ALMA" DE DAVID DIOP

El escritor francés David Diop escribió "At Night All Blood is Dark" (Traducido a "Hermanos de alma" al español) para compartir con el mundo la desgarradora historia que se vivió en Senegal durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Escrita originalmente en francés, la misma fue premiada este año en el "International Booker Prize".

Aquí hay razones para leer este libro:

Es una novela que te hace reflexionar sobre el horror de la guerra, la identidad, la amistad y la venganza. El protagonista, Alfa Ndiaye, es un soldado senegalés que lucha con el ejército francés en las trincheras de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Tras la muerte de su amigo Mademba Diop, Alfa se convierte en un asesino despiadado que mata y mutila a los soldados alemanes cada noche. La novela explora los sentimientos y pensamientos de Alfa, así como sus recuerdos de su vida en Senegal y su relación con Mademba.

Es una novela que ofrece una perspectiva diferente y poco conocida sobre la Primera Guerra Mundial, desde el punto de vista de los soldados coloniales africanos que lucharon por Francia. NOTE DE LECTURE :  La porte du voyage sans retour. David Diop. 2021

J'attendais beaucoup de ce récit et j'avoue voir été un peu déçue. L'auteur prend la voix du narrateur, celle d'une confession à la fin de sa vie, sur un amour impossible. Le parallèle est fait avec Orphée et Eurydice, que l'on découvre en épigraphe sans le comprendre. C'est en effet la confrontation de deux mondes, deux cultures, deux points de vue sur une même histoire, celle de la colonisation et de l'esclavage au Sénégal. La porte du voyage sans retour, et le titre est finalement bien choisi.

J'attendais un récit sur la langue, avec la quête des noms de fleurs exotiques. J'attendais un récit sur la rencontre, avec l'espoir de se comprendre au-delà de l'origine. J'attendais un récit sur le voyage, avec la découverte de l'altérité. Mais je n'ai perçu que l'intraduisible des émotions, l'impossibilité de la réciprocité des sentiments et la nostalgie de l'exil. C'est violent et bien triste. 

Mais l'auteur fait son récit comme un griot, avec maints détails dans la langue Wolof et quelques légendes africaines, écho de mythes européens, ce qui en fait le charme et l'ampleur.

PS : j'aurais aussi aimé que le magnifique "Portrait de Madeleine" de Marie-Guillemine Benoist. 1800, soit sur la couverture. Cela correspond tellement mieux à l'époque du récit
