Terug Naar Het Begin festival 2023
Mariakerk, Krewerd, The Netherlands
Performative installation & illustration: Dajana Heremic
Soundscape: Carolyn Hillyer
Film & animation: Thomas Grootoonk
Installation support: WERC Collective "I was invited to take part in the Terug Naar Het Begin Festival, in which I was to inhabit one of the beautiful early medieval churches built on top of prehistoric mounds or ‘wierden’ in Groningen. For this project I created the performative installation “Heim”, in which I ventured to express, as if through a dream, our primoridal home. In this particular work I was fortunate enough to be collaborating with Carolyn Hillyer, whom I deeply respect, as well as the Groningen WERC collective and my wonderful partner Thomas Grootoonk. My animated archaic drawings, mist, water reflections and sound scape transformed the Mariakerk church in the village of Krewerd into a primordial cave in which I performed the ancient, focused, trance inducing magic of spinning and weaving for days." ~ Dajana Heremic

A drawing I did for the 5 year art improvement challenge! I don’t normally like to re-draw things exactly like the original, but I did for this challenge! Like most artists, I can be hard on myself and not like most of my work, but there are several pieces from 2018 I still really like, even though my art has improved. So think of this as an “updated” version! I still remember that this piece was inspired by a photo by Dajana Heremic, and I had fun going back to my 2018 Spotify Wrapped to listen to the songs that were inspiring me back when I made the original drawing. As always, thank you for your continued support of my work throughout the years!

Some Things That Have Been Bringing Me Joy
Some Things That Have Been Bringing Me Joy
Something I’ve really started to pay more attention to this year is the small things that bring me joy. And I thought that sharing a few examples of what’s been making me happy these past few days would be a restful – yet still hopefully inspiring – way to wind down this hectic (but positive and creative) week. At Home In The Cold Vegan Haggis Something of an oddity, yes, but my word, it’s…

Some Of The Art I Encountered In 2020
Some Of The Art I Encountered In 2020
I will probably spend a few more days posting about 2020. I hope you don’t mind. There’s just quite a bit I want to share. It was mentioned a few days ago that I didn’t encounter much art in 2020 thanks to depression clouding nearly every one of my days, making it impossible for me to see, hear or feel anything. The art that did find its way through and into my life however – mostly in the later…

M a y  B e  W e l c o m e . “Välkommen vår maj månads tid Maj vare välkommen” . “Welcome Spring, the time of the month of May May, be welcome! Bless this mild summer, For the Linden wears green leaves in the Spring. Now we carry May in our village, and praise it with new songs. Now the oppression of Winter is gone from the land and leaves and grass are so green now. The little lark's dulcet tone Now warbles loud with lovely song. Grant us a bountiful year, Preserve both house and farm. Give us favourable weather, So both ground and marsh may flourish. With sweat we've worked the earth, And left our grain in her. Let barley grow on the fields, And grass grow in the meadows. Let fruit grow on the trees for must, That it might make us merry! That bees give wax and honey sweet, For remedies, food and candles and mead. Strong hops hang on the bars, Such bitter wormwood on the meadows. Let herbs grow for flavour and food, Give peas, roots and cabbage on plates. Bless the water salt and fresh, For the people with herring and fish. Let us with health use it May, be welcome! Yours in fright and steady peace, For the linden wears green leaves in the spring!” - Ranarim .

Quote
He lived there in the unsayable light. He saw the fuchsia in a drizzling noon, The elderflowers at dusk like a risen moon And green fields greying on the windswept heights.
Seamus Heaney

“It seems appropriate that the elder is under the sign of Venus. When you begin working with its aromatic blooms, it’s easy to understand why the elder means purification and love in the language of flowers. In fact, when standing amid an elder in full bloom, one almost feels the presence of the goddess Venus herself.
Fittingly, the delicate flower helps women remain beautiful; it has been used since ancient Egyptian times for reducing wrinkles and age spots. It also inspired the poet Seamus Heaney when he wrote his Glanmore Sonnets.
Shamans and medicine people worldwide believed elder was a healing plant and commonly used it for upper respiratory ailments and topically for skin problems. Traditionally, our herbalist elders, such as Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Pliney the Elder recognized its strength as a diuretic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and more. Recent research from Israel and the United Kingdom has confirmed some of these claims.
Elder has long been a human ally, both as medicine and as food.” Source: https://theherbalacademy.com/10-elderflower-recipes-and-remedies/

Halloween was pretty much cancelled for me this year. (You can read about it here if you like.) But the day after I did find the energy to appreciate some of what the folks I follow on Instagram had to offer.
