Dajana Heremic
Terug Naar Het Begin festival 2023
Mariakerk, Krewerd, The Netherlands
Performative installation & illustration: Dajana Heremic
Soundscape: Carolyn Hillyer
Film & animation: Thomas Grootoonk
Installation support: WERC Collective "I was invited to take part in the Terug Naar Het Begin Festival, in which I was to inhabit one of the beautiful early medieval churches built on top of prehistoric mounds or ‘wierden’ in Groningen. For this project I created the performative installation “Heim”, in which I ventured to express, as if through a dream, our primoridal home. In this particular work I was fortunate enough to be collaborating with Carolyn Hillyer, whom I deeply respect, as well as the Groningen WERC collective and my wonderful partner Thomas Grootoonk. My animated archaic drawings, mist, water reflections and sound scape transformed the Mariakerk church in the village of Krewerd into a primordial cave in which I performed the ancient, focused, trance inducing magic of spinning and weaving for days." ~ Dajana Heremic

“Each bough and branch gave me a map, not only of that moment but also of what had been lived by me and what might still be found. The nature in that forest harboured my life within her lap and held it out for me to retrace and to know again. She had it all, inscribed into her bark. I had become part of her body; there were traces of me laced among the trees, scattered on the forest floor, caught inside the mosses, harboured in the damp air of the night. The forest knew me simply because I had walked through her remembering heart.” ~ Carolyn Hillyer, Book of Hag

MAIDEN GATE
you are the daughters of a fast drum
you are the barefoot runners with life beneath your feet
you are the dancers on the damp earth
you are running true and leaping clear
bound like swift arrows to the heart of the land
chase the dawn and dance with wild gods
you are the raw and the rhythm
you are the excited alchemy of the spring
you are the chaotic summoning of the wind
your passion is fierce and you rub at your faces with earth
the wild in your loins is too strong to contain you
you are traveling in moon waters flowing growing in moon waters dance on dangerous ledges until your spirits bleed
make things happen with every step of your dance
unwind the magic with every turn of your dance
sing the flames of great joy
sing about a fierce love
sing about a strong life
you are the laughter of the quick stream
you move within a spring coiled
you are a vibrant seed, you are a jagged seam
you are impulsive freedom and a reckless energy
come with a free-born spirit
come with an edge that is sharp and new leap for the moon like a hare on the mountain
shout for the wind like a rook in a tree hear the wild beast drumming in your forest heart
dance with a reckless wind beneath your arms
worlds will spin fast when you stamp your feet
bring on the storm, tie madness in your hair for there is nothing that can stop you dancing now
go to where the wild lands welcome you
and the sweet air lifts you free
run to the drum of an untamed song like a horse on the heathen hills here is your courage drink deeply leap and climb beyond your fear..

All mothers, All My Relations. Your morning meditation.
From SHE On The Tip Of Her Tongue
There are so many of them;
they stand behind our backs,
long trails of mothers
stretching out over the frozen lakes,
spilling beyond the skyline
and eventually lost far inside dark shadows of time.
There forms a river of women's blood,
a mesh of women's bones,
a web of women's lives
into which we are profoundly, intricately woven.
As we walk back along our line of ancestral women
they reach out their hands to touch us.
We are being wrapped in the enduring life force of our many ancient mothers.
Each ancestor we pass has given some part of herself to the women we are now.
There are so many mothers whispering inside us.

"One thousand ancestral mothers, each one linked directly to you through your matrilineal line. Your foremothers were reindeer women that lie at the heart of the great ice. Your foremothers followed the herds across the frozen tundra and along the boundary of the ice out to the very edges of the world. The spirits of nature come alive to her for she carries the imagination and desire to listen to them. The lands awaken to her begin to sing the songs of rocks and rivers, returning sun and dancing moon, stars in the black above the tundra, wind within the forest pine." ~ Carolyn Hillyer

This month on your Women's Liberation Music Hour, DJ Phoenixx presents songs for your very own Dance Party that include some of her favorite dance music. Being a fan of funk (it's not easy to find female/Feminist funk bands, by the way!), she also likes dancing to Disco. It is hard to find Disco songs that are not misogynist and/or steeped in a male love interest when sung by female artists. Phoenixx did find a couple that she is comfortable offering to us in this context of women's liberation. For Phoenixx, it's important to us as Radical Feminists to just dance out the layers and layers of anger, frustration and sadness to music that moves our bodies. So, hopefully in this next hour, you will find your body moving to the dance-able rhythms.

"The first sacred fires arrived out of darkness, kindled from the forgotten ashes of the past, and kept alive through women's prayers fed with the wood into the flames... Magical tales are spun from the ashes, laced through smoke and seared in hot flame; a well-tended hearth place will cradle and protect the many fire stories that a traveller carries in her blood and bones."

“By now our hair is braided through with seeds and secret sweetness. The earth has given plenty to feed this bright life dance. We gather this feast of nature into our laps and bind our spells to catch the essence of these days. We make courageous oils, consoling ointments, cheery infusions and a remedy in which the sun itself is suspended, ready to discharge remembered heat into wintry bones. At last we sip a little honey from the comb and seal the potency of our warm summer spells.”

INTENTION DE NOUVELLE LUNE
"Spin woman spin, turn woman turn
Curl the clay within your hands
Give form to the bowl
Spin woman spin, turn woman turn
Shape the wet pot firmly because
Balance is all
Smoothed by your purpose
And fired by your power
Burnish the sides before
You set your good work down
Woman spin"

Global disabilities map visualizes the strength and power of millions of athletes around the world

When the People with Disabilities Act was signed into legislation in 1990, it turned unlawful to limit entry – to employment, training or federally funded establishments – primarily based on incapacity. The ADA made it simpler for wheelchair customers, senior residents or a disabled baby to navigate public areas and to have equal entry to studying.
Many People who are usually not disabled profit from the ADA. Constructing ramps, curb cuts, wider halls and audio directions at crosswalks had been a results of this legislation. The ADA made it simpler for a dad or mum to push a stroller down the sidewalk, to cross the road guided by aural prompts or for college kids with dyslexia to study and excel at school.

December three is the United Nations Worldwide Day of Individuals with Disabilities. Whereas ADA protects the rights of People with disabilities, what protections exist across the globe? Are there insurance policies that shield a toddler in Ethiopia born with listening to loss? Or the Venezuelan lady who misplaced the usage of her legs in an car accident? What about an adolescent in Senegal born with Down syndrome?
The College of Tennessee Heart for Sport, Peace, and Society has created the International Incapacity Rights Map, an interactive map that advocates for the rights of individuals with disabilities all through the world. The map may also serve to empower those that need to create insurance policies that shield individuals with disabilities.
Leveling the enjoying subject
In 2016, JP Maunes, a incapacity rights advocate and signal language interpreter, and Adeline Dumapong, a Paralympic bronze medalist, each from the Philippines, sat in a Washington, D.C. restaurant riveted by the closed captioning expertise on the tv. For the hundreds of thousands of people who find themselves deaf or exhausting of listening to, closed captioning supplies details about what might be seen, even when it’s not attainable to listen to.
Neither Maunes nor Dumapong is deaf. Closed captioning, nonetheless, represented greater than the comfort of having the ability to observe a sports activities commentary in a loud restaurant. They may see what was attainable for individuals with disabilities in their very own nation. As Filipino residents, Maunes and Dumapong wished to know what they might do to deliver consideration to the discrimination towards individuals with disabilities.
They’d seen American athletes use their skilled platforms to talk out towards discrimination, unequal pay and sexual harassment, together with Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe. How may they use their energy as athletes to advocate for extra inclusive legal guidelines and insurance policies?
Tumblr media

Altering the world by means of sports activities
Manues and Dumapong had been contributors in our program, the College of Tennessee Heart for Sport, Peace, and Society, which has skilled greater than 80 athletes and professionals from 50 international locations who work within the sports activities sector. Their questions, conversations with advocates around the globe and the middle’s work to advertise the rights of individuals with disabilities led our crew to create the International Incapacity Rights Map.
Many individuals need to replicate the protections that ADA supplies in their very own communities. The middle supplies coaching on present legal guidelines and insurance policies. It additionally helps athletes to create sport-based initiatives and enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities of their residence international locations.
College of Tennessee Heart for Sport, Peace, and Society’s director, Dr. Sarah Hillyer, describes the aim of the International Incapacity Rights Map.
The International Incapacity Rights Map describes the legal guidelines and insurance policies in a given nation and connects them to the Paralympic Motion, a world effort to advertise para sports activities and help para athletes to attain excellence in sport. The map additionally supplies data to athlete activists on how you can advocate for extra inclusive rights.
There are web sites devoted to explaining nationwide and worldwide legal guidelines and insurance policies defending individuals with disabilities, such because the United Nations Division of Financial and Social Affairs. However there has by no means been an interactive world map that shows the rights of individuals with disabilities mixed with details about the Paralympics, Particular Olympics and Deaflympics.
Tumblr media
Photograph of the International Incapacity Rights Map. sportandpeace.com
The map consists of country-specific details about the nationwide places of work of the Paralympic Committee, Particular Olympics and Deaflympics and statistics on a rustic’s participation within the two most up-to-date worldwide competitions. As well as, the map incorporates a biographical sketch of an area athlete utilizing sport as a device to advertise the rights of individuals with disabilities and to foster larger social inclusion.
Designed as an open supply platform, the map permits customers to replace and add new data on legal guidelines and insurance policies and new sports-based incapacity rights initiatives. Updates are submitted by means of the web site and reviewed by middle college for accuracy earlier than showing on the map.
[Expertise in your inbox. Sign up for The Conversation’s newsletter and get expert takes on today’s news, every day.]
Mapping rights around the globe
One of many middle’s targets is to facilitate stronger partnerships and higher collaboration all through the game sector. For instance, the Worldwide Paraplympic Committee is about to signal a historic cooperation settlement with the Worldwide Incapacity Alliance “to advance the rights of individuals with disabilities and collectively commit to make use of parasport as a car to drive the human rights agenda ahead.” Parasports are sports activities performed by individuals with disabilities, each bodily and mental. Our map reveals visually how interdisciplinary efforts from authorities, Parasports and native initiatives can advance human rights.
Individuals with disabilities face quite a few boundaries daily. Our work on the middle helps to equip individuals to develop into advocates and break down these boundaries. As we analysis obstacles dealing with individuals with disabilities, this map can act as a robust device to assist strengthen these vital human rights.
