help i'm alive

So! Long time, no see. 2023 was a whole goddamn lot lol

I don't have a demo update to share yet, but that's because I had to scrap nearly everything I managed to write during a very, very, very bad stint of writer's block last year. I hadn't even realized it had been a block like that until I went over my work so far last month and realized it was bad -- like, trust me; a slog to read that didn't even sound like me. It's been extremely frustrating but I've finally broken free of that and it's been easy and actually fun to write again for the first time in actual years. I just hate giving updates that have no actual news in them. And I really had nothing to share other than: I deleted thousands of words and feel so much better now 😅

Anyway, little about my demo plans have changed: I'm still putting out the Chapter 3 demos in Choicescript/on Dashingdon and then will be going dark to move things over to Twine. Where I am in the process right now is... feeling like 35% done with the overhauled version of this chapter and 50% done for the next demo update.

As far as asks, I'm... not really sure what to do?? I believe I've read them all (I love you guys), but so much time has passed since getting most of them that I'm not sure if it's, like... still pertinent??? To go back and answer them?? I suppose some of them like character asks could be, but all the nice messages of support -- that feels weird since I've practically ghosted this blog since August! Idk. Y'all tell me what to do with 'em and I'll do it. Maybe I should make a poll.

Uh... that's really all there is to say regarding the game! I've added some personal stuff after the cut, but if you're done here: Thanks for reading and sticking around. It means the world, for real.

So what has occupied my time all this time? Doctor, therapy, money, and friends. And improv! But especially the first two. There was a lot of non-writing related stuff fucking up my ability to focus and write, so hopefully with my mind and body both feeling a lot better, I can get back to being present and active with the game. I didn't realize how physically unwell I was until last year and it's been like... life-long issues I've been treating. It turns out it's not normal to feel exhausted enough to sleep at any given time, at all times, for your whole life! wow!!

I also uninstalled Tumblr from my phone back in February, so you could say I'm sort of generally focused on offline life. (And what an interesting coincidence that my writer's block dissipated shortly after that...) I also just moved!! The last two weekends have been so expensive and stressful -_- But I can't even compare the old place to the new. We're basically paying the same price for idek how much more space. The cats are so happy; which means the house humans get to be happy.

My schedule is finally freed up from constant medical shit (there was a 3-month stretch this winter with multiple doctor appointments literally every fucking week 🙃🙃🙃). My mental health is doing a lot better -- literally incomparably better compared to where I was this time last year. There's live comedy now (which I dabble in, to be clear lol), but I've finally found myself able to like... balance it all. The physical and creative energy that goes into it all, anyway. The lovely thing about improv is that you kinda just show up and do your thing -- it doesn't cut into my writing time so much as it costs energy. Unless I end up in this comedy debate show thing next month, which I am very excited to give up writing time for

So like... Life is life-ing and I'm just vibing. Or something? I'll be around.

SMARTEST OC: rue parker [the wayhaven chronicles] — rue is extremely smart, often prone to boredom if something is not mentally challenging/stimulating enough. she is one of those people who, no matter what they are doing or how many times they have done it, does things exceptionally well. | lisa sinclair [the fernweh saga] — lisa has more of a 'book smart' type of intelligence. she is always been overly curious about every little inexplicable thing and, even with fernweh being plagued by freaking accidents, her only purpose is to uncover and solve the mysteries;

I’m just gonna say this — it’s not my first time drawing Rain, practicing their face and eyes. This whole look was directly inspired by my nightmares, where I was silently eaten by flowers in some creepy garden. I draw the front and back of the outfit, but here’s the shit that makes me furious — something happened and the back of the outfit is gone. So, I’m just gonna fucking describe this shit: Branches dig out under their skin, irises with gaping mouths, amaryllis with blinking eyeballs, thorns slowly dragging itself towards Rain’s neck and bloody roses bloom inside their feet.

The next time I’m making fucking copy in the Procreate. 😭

*set in the near future of book two*

*a mystery is afoot in the town of Emerson, causing our unlikely heroes (or are they villains?) a rise in stress. however will they relieve it?*

*Vexx is my mc. Jessie, Gabe, and Curt belong to CIE’s author, the lovely Okomo @emersonfreepress *

Vexx pulls an old lighter and a fresh carton of cigarettes from his jacket pocket. The tension is visible in his shoulders.

Jessie frowns lightly up at him. “I thought you quit?” she said, the quiet worry in her tone making him smile at her slightly.

“I did,” he said, pausing to take a deep drag from the now-lit cig, “but stressful times call for unhealthy stress relievers.”

“I can think of a much healthier way to relieve stress,” said a familiar voice from behind, the shit-eating grin distinct in his tone.

Vexx didn't even turn to answer him, “looking to get your knees dirty, Emerson?”

A sultry laugh was Curt’s response as he came to stand on Vexx’s left. “It's for a good cause.”

Vexx rolled his eyes in response, though the corner of his lips twitched up slightly in a smile.

A scoff turns the trio’s attention away from the conversation.

Gabe was standing behind them with his arms crossed over his chest, a familiar frown on his pretty face. “Very mature of you, Emerson.”

Curt’s eyes light up at the opportunity, flicking between Vexx and Gabe with glee. “Gaby does have more experience in taking you than I do. Think he can give me some pointers, V?”

Vexx rolled his lips inward, biting back a grin. “Two gorgeous men down on their knees for me? I’d be a fool to refuse,” he drawled lowly. His shoulders relaxing at the easy banter.

Gabe’s eyes narrowed as he scoffed again, though the blush warming his skin was made known by the reddening of his ears.

A quiet cough from the spectator of the conversation interrupted the heated glare Gabe aimed at Curt.

“Uhm, maybe not flirting in the middle of a precinct might be a good idea?” Jessie said hesitantly, casting a pointed glance at the other bystanders watching the scene unfold.

FEELINGS ABOUT THAT NIGHT:

Happy to help her parents, although mortified that many of her classmates will see her catering an event they’re all guests at.

Felt very guilty when she realized that her leaving may have just gotten her dad fired.

Knew something was fishy pretty quickly and was hoping she would be able to sneak out without either Gabe or Kile noticing (no such luck).

The image of Marie’s body laying bent and lifeless will haunt her till the day she dies. She would trade anything to reverse that mistake.

This is literally her worst nightmare.

Is only helping clean up the crime scene because she is scared that they will kill her next. Honestly just hoping they will stay true to their word and let her go after all this is said and done.

Felt like she was going to throw up for the rest of the night.

Her conversation with Kile in the car did nothing to calm her down.

Tried to run when she got the chance even though she knew it was a long shot.

Ruined her 3 week clean streak without smoking that night (just another thing to feel guilty about)

Really hoping this is all a dream…

HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT THE CAST:

Gabe: Honestly did not expect him to be like this, threw her off for sure. The way he switches from cold-hearted calculated killer to school golden boy heartthrob and back again is very disconcerting for Ingrid as she is someone who wears her emotions on her sleeve. Grow to understand each other better over time, but it takes a while. And Ingrid takes many steps to avoid him at school. Still she has a morbid curiosity about who the “real Gabe” happens to be, and if such a thing even exists.

Kile: BAD VIBES, BAD VIBES. Never knew what to make of them before that night but now she knows she wants to be as far away from them as possible. Kile stresses her out aggressively and that doesn’t really change. Has no idea how to talk to them and when she does try it’s mostly awkward questions (“yeah, wow, this weather we’ve been having… crazy, right?)

Jack: Oh Jack is the man for her <3. Compassionate, understanding, creative, in tune with his emotions, and tall! What more can a girl ask for? Just seeing him around makes her stomach flip and her brain turn into static. Their interactions will involve a lot of awkward jokes, excessive blushing, and a genuine interest in getting to know the other better. Doesn’t know how to express her romantic feelings at first so she just kind of makes him a bunch of little gifts and hopes he gets the message from there. If he ever wrote her a poem she would literally die. Truly what else can she say other than she likes ‘em nice and sweet.

Jessie: Will get along really well with Jessie, will become best friends for sure. Likes the fact that she has the ability to be so kind in a place that strives to not let that be an option. Ingrid spent most of last year wanting to go up to Jessie and introduce herself but never built up the nerve. They will have fun talking about their crushes, going on nature walks, and making each other friendship bracelets (and honestly they deserve it)

Rain: Definitely intimidates Ingrid for a while (“wow their so well dressed and they don’t seem to even care what people think of them, way too cool for me”). But they eventually bond over their love of modifying clothes, even if their fashion senses are super different. Always willingly to help them grab things from high places.

R: Not like anyone she has ever hung out with, and they push her out of her comfort zone in just the right way. But they do teach her how to better say “no” cause if she did all the things they suggested she would have a heart attack. Still no one can make Ingrid laugh like R. And she secretly wishes she was confident enough to rock eyeliner like they can!

Vi: Surprisingly really likes Vi, and that’s not just because she wants to get with their step-brother lol. She gets their lonely and very clearly stressed about many different things so there is an immediate connection with that. Her strategy right now is to kill them with kindness. Of course it takes Ingrid a little while to find her footing with them but they’ll get there… eventually.

Heidi: Thinks Heidi is very pretty and also kind of scary. From what Ingrid has seen she likes the fact that Heidi is always looking out for her friends. But overall tries to avoid the Emersons in general, too many unknown variables.

Curt: Doesn’t super understand him, he’s like a riddle… And Ingrid doesn’t feel equipped to solve it. Even so, he seems nice enough.
