antithetical couplets, or alternatively, the lack thereof. these are known as 对仗 (duì zhàng) in chinese (similar to 对联 duì lián、对偶 duì ǒu you may have heard of), where the number of characters in each phrase are the same, while the position of the noun in the first part of the couplet equates the position of the noun in the second, the verb the verb, the adjective the adjective etc. there's also this thing called 平仄 (píng zè) in which the tonality of the first and second parts of the couplet has to be opposite (terrible explanation sorry for butchering it).

they aren't strictly 对仗 here. words like 绵 is more an adjective than a verb, while 断 is a verb. the 平仄 for the last one (2ha) should work alright, i didn't bother for the other four-char phrases.

Italicised words delineate main character-related words in chinese. It all began with Nirvana in Fire jingsu's "年景靖好，岁月长苏" (nián jǐng jìng hǎo, suì yuè cháng sū) which I loved to bits, and that led to me coming up with all these (very flawed) couplets stringing together character names and relevant things.

When I get into foreign media, one of the first things I do is study the names. Because being a nerd is fun.

My friend is writing extremely good Untamed fanfic, so I've spent the last week trying to figure out how to pronounce Mandarin. And then, despite the fact that y'all can just LISTEN to the show to hear the pronunciation, I decided to share my new knowledge.

I'm a historical linguist (I study how languages might have been spoken in the past) so I'm also including how these names might have been pronounced in Middle Chinese (4th-12th C).

We don't know exactly how things were pronounced then. But this story is set in vaguely historical fantasy China, so I want it to have some vaguely historical names.

Huli Jing Wei Ying and his son the neko Wei Yuan just bought and moved into an old abandoned house close to a small village. Hi there, I go by RHYS. They / Them pronouns. I am an artist, and i struggle with anxiety and other illnesses. I also work when I can. So i tend to be pretty sporadic. I can get to things very quickly, or very slow. Nothing against any one person. I just write when I feel like it.

A lot of people seem to forget that the only thing Wei Wuxian actually named himself was Chénqíng. Suíbiàn was named that because Jiang Fengmian thought it would be funny.

裂冰 – Lièbīng

Liebing ("fractured ice") is Lan Xichen's xiao, a Chinese end-blown vertical flute. Xiao are usually made of bamboo, but Liebing is made of white jade. When not in use, it hangs from Lan Xichen's waist (or, in the drama, is probably kept in a qiankun sleeve).

Wangji ("free from worldly concerns") is Lan Wangji's guqin, which is a plucked, seven-stringed Chinese zither. Wangji is black, decorated with engravings. Lan Wangji carries the guqin on his back (or in his qiankun sleeve).

陈情 – Chénqíng

Chenqing ("to explain matters fully" or "old relationship") is Wei Wuxian's dizi, a Chinese transverse flute. It is made of bamboo and is ink-black (in the drama, with red specks), decorated with a red tassel. Wei Wuxian likes to carry Chenqing tucked into his belt, when he's not twirling it in his fingers.

紫电 – Zǐdiàn

Zidian ("purple lightning"), is a powerful magical tool given to Jiang Cheng by his mother, Yu Ziyuan. It is a ring (in the drama, a ring attached to a snake bracelet), that transforms into a whip when unleashed. Jiang Cheng wears the ring on his right index finger.

a note: I do think that I might have made some of the soft tones into third tones by accident D: (specifically “zi”...
