What if one of the reasons, VILE made Carmen faculty was so that they could try to convince her from going on less capers. Which meant a lower chance of being found by A.C.M.E or her team. Dexter Wolfe was faculty and he went out on plenty of capers which led to him meeting Carlotta and the reason he wanted to leave VILE. And Carmen was doing the same thing.

On Age in Carmen Sandiego (2019)

Or, at the very least, in the timeline of Crimson Shades.

First off, Carmen’s mother, Carlotta Valdez (aka “Vera Cruz”), was supposed to have “died” in 1999. Carmen looked around perhaps a year old at that point in time, giving her a possible birth-date in 1996 to 1997. This in turn suggests that the series takes place some time before the actual date of publication—say, 2017/2018 onwards—to maintain Carmen’s rough age.

Rough age ranges of the characters, taking Carmen’s rough birthdate for estimation:

Team Red

Isabela Valdez/Black Sheep/Carmen Sandiego: 16/17 starting at VILE, 18/19 during the Poitiers Caper, 22/23 by the end.

Fairly self-explanatory.

Pierre Bouchard/Player: 12/13 as a White Hat Hacker, 14/15 during the Poitiers Caper, 18/19 by the end.

Not quite old enough for a learner’s permit (Up Here it’s a G1) during the earlier capers.

Ivy Collins: 19 during the Donuts/Poitiers Capers, 23 by the end.

Zack is supposed to be around a year younger than Ivy.

They may be slightly younger or older, but at least Coach Brunt’s age seems to have been confirmed at 60 by the time of the Fourth Season.

Graham Calloway/Gray/Crackle: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 24 by the end.

Jean-Paul Marignan/Le Chèvre: 19 starting at VILE, 21 during the Poitiers Caper, 25 by the end.

Antonio Sánchez/El Topo: 18/19 starting at VILE, 20/21 during the Poitiers Caper, 24/25 by the end.

Sheena Landry/Tigress: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 24 by the end.

Parker Morris/Mime Bomb: 18 starting at VILE, 20 during the Poitiers Caper, 23 when arrested, 25 by the end.

Sawa Jin/Paper Star: 17 starting at VILE, 18 during the Magna Carta Caper, 22 when arrested at the end.

ACME

Tamara Fraser/Chief: 26 when killing Dexter Wolfe, 45 during the Poitiers Caper, 49 when arresting VILE, 51 by the end.

Inspector/Agent Chase Devineaux: 37 during the Poitiers Caper, 38/39 when arresting VILE, 41 by the end.

Agent Julia Argent: 25 during the Poitiers Caper, 27 when arresting VILE, 29 by the end.

This is going to cause some trouble, I just know it. But the average amount of time it takes to get a university degree in the UK is around three years, and Julia has two of them. She also seems to have jumped right to an associate professorship at Oxford in Season 3, the requirements for which are around 4-6 years of study plus a thesis. Thus Julia would have had to have been in school for at least something like seven to nine years before joining Interpol, with whom she had apparently only been for a fortnight before the Poitiers Caper. The number above assumes that she skipped a year and took a year less to complete her second degree. Or took two years less. Or started two years early. You get my point. Basically, Julia has to be a fair bit older than she looks in order to actually have the qualifications she possesses.

Agent Umaira Zari: 38 during the Poitiers Caper, 40 when arresting VILE, 42 by the end.

Some additional ages:

Nakamura Hideo: 17 when his brother Suhara was born, 36 when his brother disappeared, 63 when his brother returned for good, 65 by the end.

Not an unreasonable age given his looks, I thought.

Carlotta Valdez: 27 when she gave birth to Isabela, 47 when Carmen returned home to her, 49 by the end.

Young but not too long, once again.

"Carmen Sandiego": An Enthralling Animated Series [Part 3]

Continued from part 2

Chief looks at a file about Carlotta Valdez, Carmen's long-lost mother

The series goes beyond a fun and low-stress 1990s game show, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?. While there are educational geographical lessons aimed at kids, Carmen is often in mortal danger and "out of reach" of those chasing her. One fan recently counted 71 near-death experiences for Carmen throughout the series. So much for this being solely for kids!

This article was originally meant for The Geekiary. I submitted the article in mid-August 2022, on August 16, and it got sent back for edits, and even after a long conversation with one of the editors, including re-submitting the article a second time, I decided to publish it on my own (see original post for details) It was published on my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 2, 2023.

Carmen does not go on her missions alone. Apart from Player, South Boston siblings Zack (Michael Hawley) and Ivy (Abby Trott), help her as part of Team Red. Zack is often the getaway driver due to his lack of experience with undercover work.

In contrast, Ivy either runs interference using her engineering skills or makes disguises. In this way, she is like Monique in Kim Possible or Tomoyo in Cardcaptor Sakura, who make outfits for eponymous protagonists of those series.

Specifically, for Carmen, the tools that Ivy provides her ensures she is prepared for any situation. This enhanced by her array of outfits, her expert skill at blending in, even she shows her face.

A major plotline throughout Carmen Sandiego is her quest to learn more about herself and her past. In a clever twist, her famous nom de plume comes from a red trenchcoat she steals from VILE's bookkeeper, Cookie Booker. "Carmen Outerwear" is emblazoned on the coat's back. The coat also says it is from San Diego, California.

She gains many other names throughout the series. Player calls her "Red". Her friends Zack and Ivy call her "Carm". Rito Moreno's inclusion as the voice of Cookie in the series is a nod to the fact that she voiced Carmen in the 1990s Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? series.

In the 1990s animated series, Carmen does learn about her past. In the final episodes of that series, she wrestles with the fact that a wealthy industrialist named Malcolm Avalon may be her father. This series explores that more directly.

Carmen carries three Russian nesting dolls with her when she comes to VILE Isle. While this might, at first, suggest some possible Russian ancestry, it is likely a red herring. In any case, her past is very important to her. VILE exploits this, hoping there will be an irreparable rift between Carmen and Shadowsan (Paul Nakauchi).

The latter is a Japanese stealth teacher that Carmen detested in crime school. It is later revealed that he left out certain details from the official report about Carmen's childhood home in Argentina being burned to the ground.

In a nod to the original series, Carmen and ACME (Agency to Classify and Monitor Evildoers) are on opposite sides. While Carmen is often running from ACME agents, in one episode she has Player hack into the ACME mainframe. It confirms that Chief, otherwise known as Tamara Fraser (Dawnn Lewis), killed her birth father, Dexter Wolfe.

Chief serves as an important secondary character. She communicates with her agents through a hologram beamed from a pen. She appears in the interactive special, To Steal or Not To Steal, if you click the "wrong" option, causing Bellum's devices to erase Zack and Ivy's minds.

Later on in the series, Carmen asks ACME to find her mother for her. Carmen Sandiego reveals in season 3 that a woman named Carlotta Valdez is her mother. In the last episode of the show, she enters an orphanage run by her mother, meeting her.

Carmen Sandiego's search for her roots comes to an end

The Chief looks at the file Jules has compiled on Carmen's mother

Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on Jan. 24, 2021.

In the past, on this blog, I've written about the family history themes in the animated series, Carmen Sandiego, especially in the show's first, second and third seasons. [1] The final episode of the series brought this full circle, after Julia "Jules" Argent, who had been tasked with finding Carmen's mother, talks with the Chief of ACME about what they know, which I talk about on my Wading Through The Cultural Stacks blog. Spoilers to anyone who has read this far. So, if you do not wish to be spoiled, then please don't read any further.

Anyway, the records that Jules and the Chief look at are very illuminating. They say the following:

Carmen's mother is Carlotta Valdez, born and raised in Vera Cruz, Mexico before moving to Buenos Aires, Argentina

She founded an orphanage six months after Dexter Wolfe's death

Wolfe was raising a family

What is amazing is they find this out by looking at travel records, photographs, and other evidence. They don't even need a DNA test from Carmen herself! Amazing work, Jules! Seriously. That's what makes this so great! I'm a big fan of using hard evidence rather than information from DNA tests, but I understand people having to use DNA. Still, no one should think that DNA is a be-all-end-all that will give them the true answers about their origins. That will, generally, only come from documents or perhaps oral stories. We see images of Carmen's mother in the episode, which I'm not sharing here, but she looks just like Carmen. In an attempt to bring in Carmen, ACME agents come near the orphanage where Carlotta works, but they don't enter it. Shadowsan does, and confirms that indeed this woman is Carmen's mother, seeing photographs of her and Wolff on a bookshelf, promising to tell her when she comes back "from the darkness" (she is currently in a state of being brainwashed by VILE to do their evil deeds).

Later in the episode, after VILE has been hobbled, she is handed a file about her past by Shadowsan and allowed to choose her own path. She is then shown on the streets of Buenos Aires and coming to the door of the orphanage to meet her mother.

Best of luck to Carmen! This is such a great story of family discovery and ancestry that it should be shouted from the rooftops.

Carmen’s Real Name

I think Carmen’s birth name was Isabella Wolfe-Valdez. Wolfe-Valdez because that’s the naming convention in Mexico to have both parents last name as your own; and “Isabella” because Carmen has been known as Carmen Isabella Sandiego.

I feel it would look more presentable and cute:

Curious cultural fact: In Latin America it's customary to have both paternal surnames.

Example: Carmen's last name is Sandiego (let's suppose it's her father's last name) and Gray's last name is Calloway (let's suppose it's his father's last name) therefore their children would have the last names Calloway Sandiego (or Sandiego Calloway. It's allowed to change the place of the last names.

It would seem nice if they both have their last names. Or maybe Carmen even accepts the last name of her mother and it would be Carmen Valdez. Therefore it would also be cute too:

"Mr and Mrs Valdez Calloway"
